Very nice guy! His lectures are not so clear but the tests are easy and the book tells you what you need to know for the test.
i wish sohail taught every math class available at SMC. i would take him every semester if i could. his jokes were funny and they lightened the atmosphere when it got heavy. he made calculus really understandable (imagine that!)
eh...star wars nerd. voice gets REALLY annoying after a few classes...teaches well but boring. not an easy class.
VERY subjective, beware
He is very good teacher, and a funey guy. his lectures very detail and helpful. You understand verything. BUT! HIS test are super **** hard, The final test took us 6 hours to finish.and one people got A. Perosnaly i am really good at math, butI thinkis hard
Stupid jokes, horrible explanations, and unprepared for tests. I had to sit through another teacher's lectures to get an A in this class. It would be better if this guy just taught the course instead of trying to be funny.
I thought overall Sohail was a very fair instructor. He even uses different colors on the board to highlight important stuff. Watch out though--the final is REALLY hard--so do well on the tests during the term!
Memorize his notes. Exams are just like his take home quizzes, just shorter. MUST STUDY LIKE CRAZY!!
Really long tests that he doesn't give you enough time for as well as losing a lot of points for a careless mistake. It also takes him forever to pass back the exams, so then it will be too late to drop. Avoid this teacher at all costs.
Very nitpicky
I ended up getting a B in the class although I have straight A's for all math classes including 8 and 11. On my test he would take off points even if I got the right answer. Hopefully nobody will attend his class this summer and it will be cancelled.
He is a pretty good teacher. I took math 8 with another teacher and got a D. In his class I got a B, easy.
His notes are BS it focuses on easy examples that he will never test you on. I did the book, the lectures notes, the take home quizzes and the chapter tests in the math book and my grade did not reflect how hard I worked. Be warned its your funeral.
Needs to learn how to respect his students.
Sohail actually is a teacher. Many teachers do not really teach. If you arent willing to work hard, aviod him, you have to study a lot, but you leave his class with a lot of knowledge.
I took Sohail's class after nearly 8 years away from math. This man was a godsend and helped me to re-establish myself as a math student. His lectures are clear and precise. I got my first A in a math course EVER thanks to him. He is a total stud!
By the far the worst teacher I have ever encountered. Not only does he waste time in a short 6 week calculus summer class by talking about his Iranian schooling experience, he is very anal about doing things exactly his way.
First of all, I am not complaining because of my grade in this class. It turned out I did very well on the first exam because I studied like hell. Sohail's notes were nothing like the exams and he did waste a lot of time in a 6 week class.
Ok and funny. Also pretty good looking because he looks like me in a way. Teaching is weird, but effective and exams are pretty easy. People are probably pissed off due to early morning exams. But hey, its better to be pissed off than to be pissed on.
I took this class in the summer and did not learn anything from him. He does the easiest examples in class and tests you on the hardest stuff during test time. He must have been a good professor in the past but he is no longer good.
I agree with the last comment. Don't take this class in the summer unless you are a math genius, and I mean genius.
He does not really teach you anything accpet doing things his way. Overall not recommended.
My grades:Math 15,A; Math 13,A; Math 11,A; and Math 8,A;. When I took math 7 with this so called "teacher" I did not learn anything and received a low B. He is totally incompetent and unpredictable. Also he is not fair when giving partial credit
Tells the class to come early at 7:00am on finals day, but shows up at 9:00. He then told us to skip some of the problems on the final to make up for the lost time. After taking the final I was one percent away from an A. He did not give me the A.
Like a moron, I took this class despite the negative things everyone else told me about him...don't make my mistake. The work he goes over in class is nothing like his tests..and he likes to take 3 out of 5 points off for a missing negative sign.Good Luck
Horrible Teacher.. what he teaches is straight out from the book, and he makes these wierd proofs where we have to solve them ourselves, without knowing if thats the right way to do them or not... and in the exams.. He expects us to have everything exact for the proofs and work... BAD CHOICE >_<
Great teacher! Others probably diss him because they got a bad grade in his class. But he teaches very well and i still use everything that he taught me. Exams are not too hard and final is ok. All you have to do is study the notes and practice the problems in the notes and you'll get an A!

He is extremely difficult but he teaches well. his exams are only 10 questions but they go from a to e for each question. He doesnt return exams and homework on time. he does not have office hrs. he gives take home quizes that take for ever and they are so hard even some of the tutors in the mat
Sohail Askarian seriously has obsessive compulsive disorder. Not only does he make sure that all the equal signs in a problem are ligned up, he also goes out of his way to take off points on a problem even if you get the right answer (i.e. using L^Hospital's rule to evaluate indeterminate limits)
Professor Askarian is an outstanding lecturer but no very helpful when it comes to preparing you for exams.
I am stuck with this instructor this fall and don't intend to get a W. It is obvious that all of the positive ratings come from the same person. My only advice is take his class and find out for yourself.
It is sad when the instructor does such basic problems in class and gives the hardest problems on the exams. If it were not for the tutors at the math lab, I would fail this class.
Hard final, hell he also threw in a bunch of crap we've never learned. Don't take this class!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought he was brilliant. Got C's in 2 and 7, but passed with flying colors in his Math 8 class. Study the way he tells you to for the exams (copying the notes over and over until you have it), all of his exam Q's are from problems in your notes. Final was brutal. Not for everyone.

Class time is well spent and helpful. Lectures are highly organized and well prepared. Previous tests are available. He is kind and funny, and cares about students. I have had good and bad before, and he is one of the best. To the bad reviewers: consider changing majors.
don't get fooled by his jockes his tests are nothing like his lecture maybe its because his lecture is nothing but making jocks
He is a really good professor. Although I felt much stress in his class, I passed math 8 and got A in this winter session. However, his lecture is helpful and interesting. We had 3 hrs per day, but I never feel his lecture is boring. Therefore, I enjoy taking his class, and I'll take his class again
Ha! Wait until you transfer to a major university and the "teaching" job gets outsourced to 4 or 5 different people. You'll long for the days when you felt challenged to learn something and the professor CARED about you learning it "his" way..now I'm addicted to Proof:...Q.E.D. thanks to Sohail.
Professor Askarian is very excellent. He teaches Mathematics in the easiest way because he is very practical.
Excellent! He is fair when grading and clear and helpful when explaining. In order to succeed in his class, a student must do a lot of work, but the knowledge one gains after being in his class is quite impressive.
Askarian is the worst math teacher at SMC. His tests are absolutely unfair, he's deceiving, and he laughs at his own jokes while wasting class time. Take Geltner, he actually teaches, he's respectful and caring towards his students and you can understand what he's saying. Geltner all the way!
Very good teacher, but only for students who are good with math. Extremely helpful, very preactical, gives all the tools for solving problems, very fair. Of course, the final was a bit stressful, but overall, if you will need to take math higher then 8, take him - you will understand the material.
HE EXACTLY KNOWS WHAT HE TEACHES.really helpful. class's full of passion to learn/teach between stu and tr.if you are major in math,i recommand u to take.but,if you got barely B or C in math 7,you have to focus on this class to get an A.he doesn't want us to memorize the formulas like other teachers. he wants us to know 'how' to get to the formulas
A relatively good teacher, a helpful guy. Quite amusing and insists you call him by his first name. The class is alright, just be committed to reading the chapters on your own and doing all of the homework, in order to ace the exams. Learn the material and you should be fine.
Took him during the winter... class was a breeze... reason I got a B was because of lack of initiative on doing homework... he's bad with returning tests on time during regular sessions, but overall he's a cool teacher with some whims about him... but hey at least you can tell he's human...
I'm a UCLA transfer from SMC. If you have ambitions past SMC, then take Askarian. You won't find an instruction he teaches his subject more clearly, but you've got to study.
Bad Verrrrrrrrrry Bad! Be Awarrrrrrre! Be Very Awarrrrre! Considering Halloween has just passed.
I think he's one of the best math instructors at SMC (and there are not so many of them - good ones)
he is good at teaching and answering questions, but the only thing is he takes off way too many points for minor mistakes...for instance if u make a simple addition mistake on a 20 point question he will give you 3 points out of 20, which might screw you over at the end.
Sohail's pretty great. He likes details and teaches it well. His step-by-step methods are useful and it makes the course much easier to understand. The workload is fair. Be warned: exams are non-cumulative and the final is cumulative, which is a total slap in the face. Overall, the course is manageable. Good luck.
Terrible...my biggest mistake was taking this class.
This guy will screw you over.

Sohail is an awesome teacher. He is very thorough and it is important to him to answer every question and make sure that all students understand the concepts. When he tells you how to study for exams, listen to him -- and you will succeed!
Nice guy. Thorough and full of good advice.
I have never had better math professor than SOHAIL.He is just great and explains everything in a wonderful way and if you don't understand than you should be stupid.I wanted to take Math 8 with him as well but the class was completely full.I'm gone miss him!
i had math o7 during winter with him . if you study his lecture and do take home quizes you will definitly get an A he is very fair grader and if you like math this is the best class ever for you.
I love this professor!!! he is by far one of the best professors at smc, and absolutely the best math professor here. Take him and you won't be sorry!!!!
A Matematical God. I liked him math52 and 7, but somehow he was tough in math8. Exams are challengable and no extra credit points.
He is the best structure ever. If you exactly do what he says and practice his notes and his pre tests you will get for sure A. He is fun and clear. The time in his class pases so fast, without getting tired.
oh god, the worst teacher i have ever had. when comes to class he makes more jocks than teaching. i wish his test was a jock but they are very hard and just terrible.
The lectures are very easy to understand, and Sohail has a way of keeping your attention. Excellent teacher, but you must be prepared to work. Definitely the best math teacher I've had at SMC.
He was the best math teacher I have ever had. He really wants his students to understand math. He is very helpful and will have extended office hours plus he will open up an email group. Before each exam you get a take home quizz, if you do that and go over the examples from class you should be prepared for his exams. Slow corrector though.
terrible. he might be good at teaching, but he is terrible about his grading. miss a negative sign in a 2-page solution and he gives no credit at all, even though in class he keeps saying the final answer doesn't matter, the final answer is the only thing he looks at when grading your tests. screwed up my GPA. and oh ya, never ever answers emails.
The Best MATH Teacher i've ever had. Ask anybody in the class and they would tell you the same thing. Fair exams, sometimes picky on sh_ts, but he wants all of us to understand how things get. He's a great guy and most of the class get an A in his class. "Goal Oriented" amazing guy, thanks Soahil :)

He's a great guy, smart, funny and of course an excellent teacher.
He's a very dedicated professor who is willing to review important math concepts from as far as math2. He's really patient and doesn't mind repeating his explanation if any1's not clear about something. He has a warm sense of humour too! His tests are fair and do-able so long you did his take-home quizzes. A slow grader, but neat & organized :)

This guy rules. Makes calculus entetaining and easy to understand. Very patient with questions. Probably the best teacher I've ever had for math.
He's very clear and answers students' questions patiently. There are a few questions in the exam same as the take-home quiz the day before. So he's quite an easy grader but grading is a bit slow
Brother Askarian is the world's slowest grader but yet the world's greatest teacher (EVER!) There is not a day that goes by that i do not mention his name. He suggests that u put ur solution manual in the fire; hes right! If you cant handle his slow grading, then goto sleep tonight knowing that you are an extremely impatient person. peace.

Slow grader yet best teacher. Patient, helpful, clear, full of sense of humor. Do the take-home quizzes and In-Class homeworks. If you know how to do them, you'll be fine. Definitely recommend him.
he is an amazing professor...very clear...math made simple...loved his class. i wish i took math 7 with him too...just do his HWs and his take home quiz and you should get an A easly..not a tricky teacher, whatever he teaches will be on the test, just have to study...
Well, nice guy. Very nice guy. But it is math. You really have to study for this class, and he jokes alot so he gets less done. If you study alot you should do well. Seriously, don't take this class with a heavy load, it'll make it that much harder. So, take ALOT of notes, do the homework and study, you should do fine.
best teacher i ever had in my life. he helps alot, i got 99 on all 3 exams and a 100 on a final. exams are fairly easy, u should just study what he says.
He is the best math professor ever! He makes sure you understand the concept. Although, the test is not easy; as long as you keep up with the homework you will be fine. ^.^ H makes Calculus fun. If you are a person who has math anxiety...like me... please take him ! He is best math teacher I ever had.
wel i had sohail for math 7 and 8 and i just have to say that if u never had him as your teacher you duuno the meaning of the VERY VERY VERY VERY GOOD TEACHER
he is very helpful and explains clearly. Study hard and don't fall behind and you will be fine
He is Math God. The best math professor I've ever had. He inspired me in every way. He has great sense of humor and he is very kind. I never heard him say no to students.
He is easy, too easy. If you're not interested in Math and just want to pass the class, take him. However, if you're a science/engineering major he probably won't prepare you good enough for higher classes. He makes solving problems so mechanical that everyone can pass his tests without understanding the material. Attendance req. only in beginning.
No denying he is helpful but to a fault. He will put the whole class weeks behind just to help one or two struggling students. Homework is light but test are difficult (which he doesn't prepare you at all). Will cram far too much info in the final week. Doesn't review anything for final
He is not a bad teacher. He makes the subject VERY mechanical. Basically he turns you into a memorizing robot and most students don't completely understand the subject yet pull off B's. He IS very funny IMO. I enjoyed the class, but if you need to go to higher math take a different teacher.
participate in class. always ask any questions if u have. he prepares you very well for higher math classes. math is not my major and i enjoyed this class alot
Nice, funny and great professor. Although the subjet itself is tough, he explains the materials as simple as possible in a way ANYONE can understand him. Hes always open for questions and doesnt want anyone to be behind. However, he doesnt cover ALL the materials. If you think he isnt good at teaching then I cant think of any other professor who is
he is a great and very very funny teacher. he is extremly helpful. even if you ask him all the homework problems, he would do it for u. The first test is easy, however the other test are a little hard. More than that, his teaching is amazing.
I took calculus in high school a couple years ago and dreaded taking math 7. As challenging as it was, Askarian made me forget why calc "scared" me. He's amazing. Do the homework, it really helps your grade, and go to his office meetings, they're pretty much all the time he has to help.
Two years of my college, he is the lowest quality professor.
Great at teaching the material in class, but terrible when assigning homework. He also expects you to give up your life for just one class. First test was manageable, but second & third was a disgrace. No curves, no dropped tests. Grades homework. Take home quizzes. If you want to spend all day every day doing math and have no life, then take him.
Controlling
I dont know what the ppl that wrote the last few comments were thinking. askarian is a GREAT prof!!! the best in SMC. if you dont learn in his class you're retarded! he knows how to explain everything REALLY WELL. i got an A in his class and i was DREADING calc! because of him i learned my calc so well that i got an A in calc 2! super funny too :)
definitely controlling, very picky. you have to follow EVERY single steps he teaches although some of the steps are useless. he doesn't care about the final answer which is BS. if you're a newbie in calculus, take him. otherwise, think twice.
I don't care what other people said, I still say that he is the best and I admire him. if you what to learn something and experience a fun class, take his class.
Askarian is the greatest prof. i have ever known! I took him for math 7 & 8 in the winter and summer and he truly made Calculus 1&2 easier then learning algebra! Amazing at breaking down concepts to something that normal people understand. People say he's hard...HE GIVES ALL THE PROBLEMS ON HIS EXAM TO YOU NIGHT BEFORE! He just changes the #!!!!!!!
He is weird and controlling. He told his students that he only cares about the steps of doing a problem, instead of the final answer !! i am not recommend at all.
too picky! if there is someone else teaching math 7, take them!
people like him cause most people at SMC are Persian, and they like him cause he's an ok guy and he's Persian. That being said, he wants you to memorize dumb proofs, he gives much harder problems on the test than those that were in the book, and he'll mark you off for FORMATTING! HW once took me 8 hours to finish, Ruined my 4.0. Take Jimenez!
hes awefum at hws !!! gives u lots of hw's and take home quizes that are just wasting your time!!! NOT RECOMMANDED unless u have a phd in math...
Sohail is the best, for real. He's not easier than other professors, but he DOES explain things better than anyone else at SMC. His classes are hard to get into for a reason! I don't know why people are whining about the homework he assigns. Most other professors assign every odd problem from every section, so please get over it. Thank you Sohail!
Hard ! go crack a bottle its better than taking math7 with him.
good lectures , horrible tests!
NEGATIVE ~~~~
I took Calc at LMU and got a D. I did much better with him. His lecture style is absolutely perfect. Doing the hw is a given. Use colored pens to take notes and DO IT HIS WAY, dont fight it, he knows the best way to approach calculus (trust me) and will not steer you wrong.COMMITMENT NEEDED but if you step up and swing, you will own calculus.
He is a great teacher. he is very clear , encourages questions, explaines everything 10 times if u want. his discussion classes are great and very helpfull. the tests are hard need to study alot. i love him.
best prof that has ever existed in SMC. he teaches everything, his tests are challenging, i dont know what people are saying im not persian n i love him. he is the best teacher , very very helpful.
I've taken at least 15 diff. classes at SMC. Sohail is the best teacher this school has to offer. Every lecture is intersting, and he understands and explains the concepts with mindblowing clarity. Mind you, I am saying this after having dropped the class because I wasn't making the grade. Still, I recommend Sohail for any math class available.
suffered a lot when taking math 7, but math 8 with Sohail is awesome. his test is from his lecture, and to do well on test is pratice homework he assigns. no professor let you pass without doing work. he is fair with everybody and i'm Asian. sometime i made same mistake but he just let me talk and then help me realize why i make same mistake again.
Sohail is the best Calculus professor at Santa Monica College, and that's a declaration ;) !!!!
I have already decided to take his Math 8 class in the Spring. Yeah, he's the best Calculus professor at Santa Monica College.
You have to dedicate more time to his class than any other I can think of. I remember taking him for Calc 1 in a winter session and literally all I did was homework, take home quizes, study & got to class. With any other teacher, Sohail's tests would be absurdly difficult (to the point of being sadistic) but his lectures make them bearable.
Please don't be intimidated by this class. I was intimidated and as a result over studied. I ended up with over a 100% in this class. All you have to do is attend every class and review session, take good notes, and ask questions. Its pretty much a guaranteed A for people that actually try. Also probably the best teacher I have ever had. So good.
Sohail is an amazing professor who really made me love math! He is encouraging, kind, and really cares about you learning the material. I have never been great at math and got a B in precalc and calc 1, but with Sohail's encouragement go totally pulled an A in calc 2! Unbelievable professor take him NOW!
In his mind, "Great Lectures = Impossible Exams." Overall he is a good professor.
He is great in explaining, tons of homework.... exams are hard!!! too little time to complete 4-5 proves out of 7-8 problems!
it was a tough class. both the time for the whole semester to finish the book and the time on the exams were not enough. we had to cover a lot, for a course that is really hard to grasp, in a limited time. He's a good professor though, you would enjoy the class. Exams are hard, many proofs. but u can get A or B if you really put a lot of time on it
Sohail is the greatest teacher in Santa Monica College. His class goes beyond mathematics and really breaks things down into micro aspects which make things much more clear. His knowledge is out the roof. His class starts out easy and gets hard however if you stay on top of his work from day 1 you will appreciate his teaching. Wish you all goodluck
He is my favorite math intructor at smc!! (Ive taken 4 for other math courses). He teaches because it is what he loves to do. Calculus is not easy but if you follow his lectures, come to the dicussion sessions he offers prior to class and do the assigned assignemnts you will earn an A and comes out understanding how Calculus I works <3
I am taking this class while working full time during summer session. So I wake up at 8 and come back at 10 pm to do my homework. It seems like hell, BUT Sohail is the teacher, if you are interested in math I highly recomend taking him. He is the one who is breaking all the concepts into simple objectives.
He is the best teacher in SMC
Don't take his class. He trims points from correct answers and gives you no partial credit on wrong answers( even if you made a small algebraic mistake). He cares too muh for formatting, so much that you will make small mistakes on the exam out of fear of diverging from his format. He spends most of his class time telling jokes. AVOID!!
Amazing Teacher. Take his class if you're crazy about math. Not easy and a lot of assignments. However, two and half hours seems so short while taking his class. And remember, HIS FORMAT means heavily to him. Increasing interests in math.
The Best teacher I had in SMC. I took him for Math 7 & 8 and his teaching changed me to a math lover. Take good notes in his class, go to his discussion class and for the exam review your notes, write a summery, do all his in class examples and in-class HW, do his take home quiz and take a look at his last semester exam. You will get a good grade.
Kind, willing to help. Not a easy one, but fair. Lecture is well-organized and clear. This is not a easy class, especially when it is a three unit class at SMC. Exams questions are from lecture. Going over lecture notes, you should be fine, but again it doesn't mean it will be an easy task. Linear algebra takes a lot of time to study.
He’s clean & organize with lecture, willing to help. He’s a discussion class before lecture. He collect homework to make sure you aren’t falling behind. He’s really care about his formatting.Calculus isn’t easy however he’s giving you the opportunity to successes. He’s web with last semester exams & quizzes so you can be prepare for the current exam.
Do not take him!!! He will fail you or screw up your GPA. His exams are extremely hard. He wants you to memorize all the proofs that he gives during his lecture. He has his own way of teaching and if you do not follow his way you do not get credit for the problems on the exam.
Math 13 is a tough class that requires a ton of work, but Sohail helps a ton. He will spend his free time after classes answering any questions you have. He takes attendance and collects some homework weekly. His tests are challenging, but if you do the homework he assigns and learn the proofs he goes over in class, an A is very attainable.
Cares more about following his weird formatting than about understanding the material or getting the answer. Expects you to memorize the proofs the way he does them for the exam, instead of reasoning them out for yourself (or the way the book does them). Also was objectively wrong about some of the background info he gave.
Sohail is perhaps one the greatest math instructors I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. He is clear, concise, and uses great and fun examples. However, if you take his class to refresh yourself, don't do it in the winter. It was my fault, but I fell so far behind I couldn't complete it. Overall, he's a great teacher and any quips are on me
Great professor. Takes his time to clearly explain everything. He holds a discussion class for questions about lecture or hw. To pass his class with an A: Do ALL of the hw, Remember the proofs, look at his old exams and Complete his take home quizzes. Also follow his format and understand his purpose. Tests are tough, but prepares you for math 8.
Sohail is my fav math professor so far. I took his class during the winter in 6 weeks & got an A along with 5 to 10 others. He is so good at explaining things and encourages students to ask questions during class. He is strict on format so you must pay attention to details & remember proofs. He re-uses problems from lecture and old Exams often.
Best Math teacher in SMC. Take in credit that teaching is his HOBBY not profession. Tries really hard for you, but will give no easy grades
Great Professor, but very tough grader. Working full-time I sometimes do not have the time to do all the homework and that has affected my grade. Tests are long but he gives good reviews before hand. Study EVERYDAY and you'll pass his class. Skip class, skip homework, and you sure wont. He does not curve, does not drop lowest. Must earn every point
Sohail truly changed my life and I mean that with every fiber of my being. He knows the topic back and forth and knows where students make mistakes--giving tips and words of wisdom to prevent it. You will have to do every single homework. You will have to know EVERYTHING, but the good thing is that he gives you everything. So you'll be prepared.
Sohail Askarian can NOT relate math to the students at all. It is as if he is talking to himself. Lousy teaching technique and does NOT care if you get this math or not. His attitude demeanor towards some students is both cold, cruel and mean as he just wants to get a paycheck. I had a terrible waste of my time, money and energy to learn math 20.
An amazing professor. I wished I took his math 7 class. Took his class in the summer. It's intense. He's a fair grader, does not curve (I wished he curves). He will really prepare you for advanced math classes. Had 3 exams + 1 final. He gives 3 take home quiz to prepare for the exam. For final, just study your lecture notes n redo all the exams
Best math teacher
He is the best math professor in SMC!!!!
He creates the "programs" for the questions and required you to use it, which is unacceptable for me. While you get correct answer in correct, he could also take points off only because you do not follow his "programs". In the other words, even in the homework, you could not try to THINK other ways to solve problems. U MUST COPY ALL OF THE NOTE.
After 5 years graduated from USC, I still think that Askarian is one the best math professor among my academic career. just worked on his homework and all the handout he posted online. Don't miss any classes and follow all the skill sets he taught. practice and practice before each tests, trust him and follow him, easy A, seriously, He's the best!
requires alot of work and you have to earn everysomgle point, he wont give you A even if you have 89.0 average
I took Askarian for math8 and the thing that bothered me the most was his grading. If you want an A in the class, you literally have to memorize his ENTIRE note book. There is absolutely NO logic to his grading. Even if you solve a problem and get the right answer, if you didn't use his method, you will lose most of the points.
Considering the abysmal standard of upper div math profs at SMC, Sohail is truly a rare gem. It is true that his class is tough and requires lots of studying, but his exams are extremely fair as he never test questions that he had not previously taught in class. You just have to do the problems he goes through in class/homework and you'll do great.
THE MOST difficult class in SMC even comparing to Hong. A LOT of proves. Mine were never made him satisfied. Proves can be tricky and intuitive, but you have to get along with it. He will prepare you as better as he can, but you need to think in his way. In short, after transferring to UC, I haven't seen one can do better proves than us.
It felt like I was in a history class, not calculus. To me math is about solving questions using your brain and actually thinking about the problem, but to him it's about following some cliché methods. I would never take his class again!
do not take his class at all. really boring and the exams super hard and you have to answer the exams the way he want you too
Lots of book hw and also assigns in-class hw. He would use some terms that would not match the book and he wants everything his way or you will be deducted points. Goes off topic and does not curve grades.
He calls himself the best calculus teacher on the campus. However, he does know what he's talking about but the way he grades and his feedback are unsatisfactory. The way he grades is very annoying. You're better off memorizing every little thing he writes but time management on test is what will mess you up.
This is the first time I am getting a W at SMC. There is no doubt he is a good professor. However, I just can't stand anymore the way he wants us to follow his format/structure on the homework and during exams. I get why he's doing that but I believe I would excel in his class if only he considers my way too.
His name "Sohail" represents how his class will go.
amazing teacher, really interesting class. very tough. i would highly recommend him to anyone.
very clear and organized lectures, challenging but fair tests, always helpful and responsive to questions during office hours or through email. he prepares you really well for upper-division math. people who are super critical of him have no idea
Exams are extremely hard but if you are good at math you'll be fine.
Sohail is an amazing professor. Off the bat he lets u know what youre getting yourself into and that u have to work for that A. Instead of office hours he holds discussions an hour before class to go over any complicated hw/concepts. This is a STEM class so be real with yourself. He gives you all the tools, if u use them, an A is totally doable.
Sohail was extremely thorough when teaching and let us know exactly what we should do to do well on the tests. You need to follow exactly what he says because 1. his method of doing calc is 11/10, 2. you will lose points on tests if you don't. HE'S GREAT!! JUST PUT IN EFFORT AND U WILL DO WELL.
Best professor I've had at SMC in 3 years. His lectures are very understandable and easy to follow! I took both calculus 1 & 2 with him. You have to put the work that's about any calculus class if you want the A. Do all the homework and practice exams, go to discussions, pay attention and take good notes in class and you'll pass with a good grade.
No pain, No gain! You need to do homework and read his notes as much as you can. His notes are the most valuable thing you can have in your college career
His classes are extremely hard. He will judge you for every minor mistake. He will also hold you accountable to your out class responsibilities. He enjoys great and deep philosophical questions. His tests are literally a copy of his notes. You need to work tremendously hard but its only suitable for certain people. Take his class at your peril!
Sohail is a terrible Professor. At the onset, he said that his "goal was to have half of the class withdraw within 6-weeks. " He also refuses to teach the concepts of calculus. He teaches a "system by which you will always get all Calculus problems correctly." In order to excel, students must memorize all of his notes and homework assignments.
The best professor ever!
I'm not really sure how Askarian is for other math classes, but he is an absolute nightmare when it comes to linear algebra. When it comes to proofs, it's either his way or the highway, and basically comes down to memorization to his exact detail. Not an effective way to genuinely learn and understand math at a higher level.
Considering SMC's math department is as hated as it is hard, Sohail is an amazing exception. He lectures very different where it feels more like a lecture than just doing problems. He is one of the profs that encourages understanding and won't demean you if you don't get it. He is very strict on notation, but exams are extremely fair.
Writes too much material on board, that it gets confusing. Not straightforward when teaching material. Must follow his format or points get deducted. The study guide is not the best for studying for test. The notes are more helpful of course. Will talk to you if you are having trouble in class. Would not recommend.
If you do all of the homework and take good notes you will pass. He sets reasonable expectations. Sohail is a great lecturer. The class feels very structured. Very proof-oriented with less emphasis on computation and no emphasis on application. Don't take other hard classes with this class because it is somewhat intense. Must always show up.
Sohail is easily the best math Prof. at SMC. Math 8 is a weeder class and is revered as one of the hardest SMC math courses. Listen to Sohail, drop your old way of doing math, his method is superior. Do EXACTLY as he says (*especially in prep for exams*) and you will get the grade you want. My first 100% on a math exam and first A in math at SMC.
Take good lecture notes and understand the problems he does on the board. Tests are based off his lecture examples, proofs, and what he calls "In Class Homeworks" that he assigns at the end of class. He will make you do the work his way but honestly his way is much more reasonable than the way the book does it.
I know that decades from now, Ill still look back on my experience in Calc II as a real gem. Sohail Askarian is extremely lecture heavy, gives reasonable homework quantities, and take-home quizzes before every exam. Exams are copy-paste from homework. Pay attention, write the notes, study like he tells you, get an easy A. Interesting guy.
I can see how a lot of people dislike him. At first, I did not like him either because of his tough grading guidelines. After talking to him and getting to know him, you realize he really has a passion for math and why he is so strict on notation. He is quite funny actually too, I would love to have him again but it requires work to pass his class!
Prof Askarian puts other math profrs to shame. Very articulate lectures, and keeps it interesting. He breaks down the material to the point where you know why you are using certain techniques. He is strict with notation, but does make it clear how it should be done. This is a prof that takes pride in his job, and does his best for student to learn
TOO MUCH UNNECESSARY FORMAT REQUIREMENTS!! I SIMPLY HATE THIS GUY!!
Hes somehow ridiculous, even if you got everything correct but as long as your format is not what he expected he will grade you low. AVOID!!!
A harsh grader. As someone said: A FORMAT FREAK!! Math should be graded based on logic accuracy not freakin format. He is lost.
I took Sohail in winter 2020 and honestly he is the best math prof i have come across in my life. If you follow his format and the way he wants things you will become better at math. He has created a system that he has developed from his students that minimizes the amount of mistakes you can make. If you can get past his notation you can get an A.
The most terrible guaranteed guys.
Simply annoying, avoid him buddies..
Youll regret If you take him trust me. He is irresponsible, terrible on lecturing, harsh on grading, and insane on formatting. Good luck.
Very picky and controlling
He is so picky. The math I know is solving problems instead of copying and pasting somewhat programs created by someone, he made math too complex and incomprehensible. Avoid him.
All I Wanna say is to AVOID this guy if you care bout ur GPA
Guys, if you have choice, take someone else, he is the no-no option.
I've taken him for math 7, 8, and currently 13. He explains every concept extraordinarily well and I've never had a prof. consistently able to answer questions as well as he does. He tells you exactly what he expects to see on exams, and exactly how to prepare for exams. I believe anyone can get an A in his class as long as they really work for it.
He is teaching very well. I am taking math13 with him this semester. I know some people hate this guy because he is so picky in terms of grading. And if you are planning to take some classes with him, you should be involved in the class otherwise, he won't care for you. I've tried to email him several times, i've never replied me back ...
Even though he teaches very well, he is not a great teacher. He only cares for students who participate in the lecture. Due to the current situation, we have online lectures, I have told him several times why I have to mute myself, he just ignore all my question, which was so sad.. He is not that nice so picky in terms of grading..
He is a awful teacher in terms of grading. He is a really picky person. He makes his own format. Thus, if you do not follow it, you can not get the grade. If I can go back in time, I will not choose him. It is my biggest failure to take him. I always regret it. As I said, he is very picky, do not take him!!
nightmare. Just take classes with other teachers.
Some things I really hated about his class: - Makes you strictly follow his format, and would destroy your grade if you don't. -Takes out all interest from the subject and makes it mechanical and repetitive, doesn't teach you reasoning. -Goes really quick over last chapters (important for calc3) without depth. If you can, take someone else.
This teacher deprived me of the pleasure of learning maths, however, Nothing particularly difficult in his class, but format
It's a very tough class and yes, he is very specific about how to answer questions but he gives in-depth instructions to get it right. I highly recommend going to his Discussion Class. No matter how dumb the question, he answers with care and truly wants his students to succeed. I got a C on the first test, but put in the work and you can do well.
Took for Winter. Hardest teacher that's overloads with HW. Must do his way or will get points deducted. If you don't understand the HW, but still turn it in. He will write "see me" on the HW. Basically, he tells you to try harder and focus or drop. Type his name in Google and go to mathjoys link. He has old exams, but deletes them once school start
Honestly, fabulous teacher, changed my life. I've always loved math, but the way he enjoys teaching & the effort he puts into his students is unparalleled. I've never felt more supported in a classroom. He is a picky grader but with good reason. He explains everything he does and why, therefore the method makes sense. Put in the work, get the grade
Professor Askarian is the man. Easily the best professor I've had between two colleges. Math13 is more conceptual than, say, Calc 1-3 and Askarian does a great job simplifying things. In terms of being a "harsh grader" I'd say this is more conditional to Lin Alg; the class is proof-intensive, so little errors are a big deal. PS: USE MATHJOYS FOR HW
Not a fun class. Pay attention. If you don't, you won't pass. He requires you to learn from his own formats and if you don't you will get the problem marked down HEAVILY on your exams and homework. I don't recommend taking this class. There are plenty of better teachers that are easier on grading.
This guy is prob top 3 best professors at SMC, by FAR the best math professor. His lectures are truly amazing and he almost makes math romantic as if it's an art. His knowledge is boundless and honestly I've learned SO MUCH. Make sure to do all homework assigned before the next lecture, he gives quizzes that are worth the most percentage wise!
Don't take him! He is heartless! He can smile, laugh, and be happy teaching while watching you hurting for getting hit hard due to formatting (yes you have to write your work in specific format like writing an essay in a calc class) even when the answer is correct, and you just forgot to write the answer below instead of on the side.
I took his math 13 in SMC. When I took it, I didnt like him. However, as a student who transferred to one of the best college. I was able to get good grades after taking a class with him. Math13 was one of the hardest classes I took in SMC. Although you hate the way he teaches, you should follow his format. Someday you will appreciate him
Worst professor ever. Super unaccommodating. Doesn't care for his students or their situations. Won't record lectures. Don't take his class if you value your grades
Probably as bad as or worse than Konya. Please do not take this class if value your GPA
Probably the worst prof I've taken thus far. He wrecked my gpa. He is rude, condescending, degrading, and as one review said he may smile and make jokes but he is awful. I'm a fairly decent student who has taken countless courses at smc. He was the worst. IF HE DOES NOT LIKE YOU, YOU WILL BE MISERABLE AND SO AWFUL.
Calc 3, not the worst if you have the right prof, and Sohail is def not that. I took Calc 3 with another prof and it was an absolute breeze, even interesting. Stay away from this guy's classes, they are so precise to the point where you'll get no credit because of the very small things you forget, lots of ppl enjoy his precision but it'll mess u up!
I had a B for the entire semester, yet I got a C at the very end because of the final, which he did not grade fairly at all. Also his exams are MUCH HARDER than the lecture examples, homework, and practice exams. If you need someone to really teach and CARE about you, don't take him.
If you value your GPA, he is not the right professor for you. He is very specific with what he wants, and you will spend much of your time guessing what he wants. Office hour is not mandatory, yet if you don't go to office hours, you are likely to fail the class.
If you want to really learn & train your brain to think in ways you never did before, take him. I feel I am smarter because of him, honestly. However, he's super picky about how you sequence and word your work. My grade suffered w/ him, but I passed & feel smarter, and I don't regret it one bit. He'll give you a father's love: tough love, but love.
He is very very tough grader! I would definitely take him again because I learned a lot with him but if you value your GPA look for someone that isn't so tough grader. If you're not open to follow his specific format don't take the class, He'll take away points just for not following his format although he gives a reason to why to follow it.
1. Calc 2 is the hardest math class you've ever taken - REGARDLESS OF PROFESSOR! 2. I have had three math professors at SMC. Sohail is by far the most knowledgeable. 3. If you don't want a lot of homework, don't take calculus. 4. Sohail has simple rules. Follow them and you will be completely fine. 5. He's hilarious. Always making jokes. 10/10
Honestly, this guy is not that bad. After transferring to one of the decent UC schools and taking classes there, he is actually way better than so-called professor in my university. If you disappoint or does not satisfy with his teaching style or whatever, you will most likely to be failed or not happy in your future institute.
He was the best math professor I've ever had at smc, I learned so much in his lectures and never felt bored in his class. He's so knowledgeable and cares about his students. Although he is strict about his format but if you follow his rules you'll find calc 2 much easier than expected. If you have a strong background in math, definitely choose him.
Sohail was my favorite professor so far at SMC he tells you how to study and as someone who does not have a strong math background I did very well in this class thanks to him. You just have to pay attention in lecture and listen to his study tips. He has a specific method you need to learn and also he gives some pop quizzes.
He lectures. He shows examples. Then the exams are similar but tricky. We just learned these things, few days ago up to 2 weeks ago? and he tested us like as if we knew all these for awhile now? and he has to make exams so tricky that half of the class werent doing good, and he calls that's good? The other half of the class don't matter? SMH
Just look at the fall 2021 smc grade distribution he only gave out 2 A's. He is a tough grader but if you are good at math you will succeed in his course. Extremely picky about formatting on exam's good luck to those taking his class next fall.
Sohail is THE BEST math teacher in have ever meet! I am an international student and my English is not good. But he explained everything so clear and logical that I thought my native language was English. he has a strict format requirement, but it has a reason. You can interrupt him at all times, and he always explains it to you in the clearest way
This prof is very selfish. He doesn't care if you get it or not as long as he has presented it, that is it and move on. He is not available for office hour or emails because this math job is his side job. His real job is during the day. So if you don't get about something, he is not available for most of the time. Avoid!
HEAVY work, Focus on the format
If you want an easy A, never take him! I appreciate I met him! He is very strict about the logic(not format). Prepare to put 100 effort into this class! You will get the grades you want if you do what Sohail says, follow him and do what he suggests. Redo all the ics and lectures before the exam.
Format is crucial to success and plays a huge role in organization and logic which I found beautiful. Tons of complainers but Professor Askarian was incredible. Many tough concepts were presented in a digestible manner. I'm not a good calc student but wished had Askarian earlier my math career to build better math foundations. Askarian is a gem.
Great at teaching. But very strict on formatting which gets very annoying, and you will lose points for not following. Test's, quizzes, and Exams all are graded hard. However, there are plenty of free points from doing all the work. Expect to write a lot, expect to have a good teacher, but also expect to do a LOT of work outside of class.
Great at explaining. The formatting is strict but I personally like it because it means I know exactly how much rigour he expects. He's very understanding when you ask questions. Class is fun and engaging even though it's a night class, I don't feel like falling asleep in class.
Incredible professor. Truly cares about his students. He makes his lectures interesting and explains complex material VERY well. He is very particular on formatting, but it forces you to stay organized which is a huge plus. ATTEND THE DISCUSSION HOURS!!!!! I am heartbroken I won't be able to take him for another course as I am transferring out.
Very rude. Short and overly complicated. Take someone else
Ive hated math all my life; I dropped both precalc and calc only to get low B's when I repeated. Got an A+ w Sohail 1st try. He's picky abt formatting, but he makes everything so clear that you will know EXACTLY what to do. Organized and transparent about what he expects. LOTS of HW (worth 40% of ur grade), 3 exams + final. You get what you put in
Highly recommend! He is very nice and good at teaching. There were 3 tests based on the HW which were graded very fairly. The final was slightly altered problems from the previous tests. He grades HW very hard and it is worth 20% but it prepares you for the tests. If you study by redoing all the HW and taking the practice tests, you'll get an A.
Professor Askarian is an excellent lecturer, and as long as you practice and master every problem he does in lecture, you will succeed in his course. He is a very tough grader on homework and is extremely strict on formatting, which is annoying but ultimately pushed me to do better. Test questions and final often had questions that we had seen.
Sohail is the best Math professor I've had at SMC!! He gives detailed and easy-to-understand lectures! Exams are only worth 60% in total, and the rest are homework & lecture notes. His exam questions are similar to the lectures and homework so as long as you review them, you'll get an A. The final exam also has similar questions as previous exams.
Single handedly ruined my life. Does not care at all about genuine emergency - member of my immediate family died the morning of an exam, he said I could take exam that class or get a 0. Class moves fast and he assumes you know everything from previously lecture perfectly by the time you sit down for the next class. Not reachable outside class hrs
I really enjoyed this class as it gives you a good foundation in calculus, however it was absolutely not an easy A. The exams make up only 60% of your grade and the rest is homework, notes and take-home quizzes. The exam is very similar to lecture and homework examples so make sure to actually redo all of them and you'll succeed!
He lectures very clearly, but he is very rigid. The exam should be completely in his format, otherwise even if your solution and answer are correct, points will still be deducted
Be prepared to work for this grade, (as long as you study how Sohail tells you to, you will get an A) however Sohail is a phenomenal lecturer and his lessons extend beyond math. A true gem at SMC
Professor Sohail is the best math professor at SMC. I have taken two other math profs and he is leaps and bounds above them. Get ready to put in a lot of work if you want to get an A, however, as most will attest to, if you abide by his rules and complete all HW and practice problems it's essentially a guaranteed A. Recorded lectures are also a +.
Professor Sohail is a tough but excellent teacher. Expect to work hard, as he's strict on formatting and grading. However, attending lectures, using the textbook, and trying unstuckstudy ai for practice can help you succeed. A rewarding class overall.
Best professor I have taken at SMC. Workload is heavy but you will be prepared for any future math courses as long as you put the time in. Need to show up for all the lectures to succeed. Make sure to focus on IC problems since they are similar to exam problems.
PICKY. Couldn't care less if you learn anything—he only cares if you follow his method. These methods aren't even standard formats; they're entirely his own made-up nonsense. Things as simple as 0
He has a very large amount of homework. and he has a perverted eye for formatting. He doesn't care about his students either. If you want to get A, avoid him, he is not worth it.
You Have to follow his structure, if not you won't pass. Closed-minded and wants it his way.
I do not respect this man. Unwilling to be open and does not provide support. No free time AT ALL. Gave an exam right after Thanksgiving "break". Too much homework given, not enough time to complete it (staying after class to rush and finish).Finds it funny to give us homework during holidays or after exams. DO NOT BELIEVE THE GRADE DISTRIBUTION!!!
He is tough, but his exams are fair. He is very strict and will not curve, however his lectures are very good. Do not procrastinate the homework. I really enjoyed his class a lot, but I would only recommend taking this class if you are pursuing a career in math (or anything related).
Pros: Amazing and energetic lecturer; exams have no surprises; discussion "classes" that last an hour before lecture; you don't need to read the textbook; recorded lectures. Cons: Incredibly strict; harsh consequences for not doing problems his way; ridiculous amount of homework; midterm a week before the final. Be prepared to work for an A.
The class isn't too difficult if you really take the time to try to understand what prof is saying. He is very strict on formatting and does this to make sure we really understand the concepts. There is 5% extra credit opportunity per exam. Study the IC and practice tests.
he is the worst professor I have ever had. way too picky with the format. Just do not take him or you will regret
He teaches a proof-heavy approach to Calc 2, meaning it's more of a course for a math major. You should avoid this course for this reason alone. Loads of Hw as others stated, easily 10+ hours per week of hw !
If you take his class and want to get an A, be prepared for your life to be dominated by homework. Go for it. Also, if you find life boring, I highly recommend taking his class.
One of the best math professor I've ever had. Gives a lot of homework, but it's designed to help you truly understand the material, not just memorize it. Lectures are incredibly well-structured and make you think mathematically. TAKE HIM if you genuinely want to learn math."
One of the best math professors I've ever had. there's a lot of homework, but it really helps you learn. His lectures are super clear and well-organized. He explains things in a way that makes you really understand and enjoy math. You can tell he puts a lot of effort into teaching and wants you to succeed.
It would be a mistake not to take Professor Askarian for Linear Algebra. His lectures are thorough, easy to follow, and inspirational. The homework sets are long, but completing them prepares you perfectly for the exams. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities, and Professor Askarian is approachable and friendly if you are struggling.
Great professor, great lectures. Lots of homework - takes hours per assignment. He is a bit picky about formatting but just learn it and go with the flow, it's worth it and it's for a reason. Old exams are released and are quite similar to ones you will be taking. Use that to your advantage and learn the types of questions that will be on there.
Sohail is one of my favorite professors ever! He is a wonderful lecturer. He tells great stories and makes funny jokes. There is a lot of homework, but it prepares you extremely well for the exam. His tests are very fair and he is extremely helpful if you have questions on the homework. If you can, go to his discussions.
