Though I can't take any of his classes (I'm his son), I know this much. His tests are all short answer. no multi-choice. I'd say he's on the hard side of the spectrum as the test scores I see while he's grading isn't all that great. He does post previous year tests and always has his door open for help.
Helpful professor but you can't understand him sometimes because he has a pretty thick accent. Just go to the Learning Communities (extra credit points anyways)and you get the questions for the test. Highly Recommended
Dr. Tanda is one of the best professors I've had at OU. Rather than just directly pasting the textbook into powerpoint slides, he dissects the material and makes it easier to understand. He is passionate about the subject and a great teacher. He truly cares about each student's success and is always helpful and available for extra help.
He is not the best teacher but he is the nicest person i've met in the bios department. No reading is necessary for this course; if you can force yourself to pay attention in class and attend the learning community you are golden.
Extremely helpful and dedicated to his students. Creative teaching methods and obvious interest in what he teaches/studies. One of the best professors in the department!
I did terrible in the intro to bios classes, but I did fine in this class. Plenty of opportunity for bonus...DO THEM. Bonus can make or break you in this class.
Dr. Tanda is probably my favorite person in the world.
Best professor I've had at OU. Class is entertaining and fun. Don't be afraid because of the name, he is crystal clear when he gives his lectures. He is willing to help any way he can. The class is difficult but take it with Dr. Tanda if you can.
Dr. T is one of the best BIOS profs i've ever had. He's very interested in the subject matter, hes hilarious, and he really cares about his students. Go to all of the learning communities as well as his lectures and take advantage of his office hours (he gives exam hints). Exams can be really difficult, but he offers extra credit (so do it)!
Dr. Tanda is my adivsor, and is also amazing. I took genetics and two tutorials with him, and although his accent is sometimes difficult he's incredibly helpful, funny, and dedicated to his job. He's been extremely supportive and helped me through some hard times.
Dr. Tanda is a good guy, there will be days where there is a language barrier, for an example when he really tries to explain something he will repeat the last 3 words he said and say "ok" and move on. So pay attention. Tests are hard so read the book! You can always reach him at his office for extra help, but don't expect all to be made clear.
Dr. Tanda is a great professor if you are looking for to be challenged and are genuinely interested in genetics. You must read the book and attend class to receive a good grade, but don't see Dr. Tanda as trying to push you down. He is really pushing you forward, and he is more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
Tanda is one of the most helpful and understanding bios teachers I've ever had. Tests are based on ppts and the handouts given each week. Gives out extra credit by going to weekly study seshs and writing a paragraph on a reading given. Not an easy class but having Tanda helps!
Can't understand a word he says. He doesn't help. I went to go look over my exam and he didn't have my scantron. He's horrible. Do not take it with it whatever you do.
Dr. Tanda keeps the lectures interesting! He makes jokes and funny comments that help you remember the material better. I love his enthusiasm for Biology, and would take him again!
Dr. Tanda was exceptionally helpful. He gave many opportunities to earn points and help your grade. The material is tough, but if you do the worksheets that he offers and the questions from the book, a solid grade on the exams are much more attainable.
hard class. VERY nice professor. i think i spent 3 hrs a week in his office for extra help. he gives bonus points. best professor i ever had. but the class itself is hard. do the warm ups and go to learning community
Dr. Tanda is always willing to help. If you take biology at OU make sure you take it with Dr. T!
Tanda has a super thick accent and is so hard to understand. If you don't read the book and teach yourself outside of class you won't do well.
make sure you go to class because he gives you EC clicker questions all the time and go to the LC every week for EC too. Pay attention in class and take notes and try read the book to make sure you really understand because no multiple choice. He is so helpful and always make sure he is available to you if you need help!
Dr T is a bit hard to understand but he's was my favorite professor this year. Lets you know what is important with his jokes. Go to class to get the extra credit he does. Put in very little work outside of class and got an A-.
Dr. Tanda was genuinely the best professor I've EVER had. He makes himself readily available for students and is incredibly kind. He's very understanding, and fun too! He is the most approachable professor and will talk to you as if you're a normal human being :-) Also gives plenty of extra credit! I highly recommend him!
Dr. T is a great professor. He offers tons of extra credit and he really cares about his students. The subject material is understandably difficult but if you try hard and go to class you should do fine.
He is by far my favorite biology professor, he actually cares about his students and is very helpful if you go to his office hours the material is hard but the tests were just like the warm ups he gave us and he gives a lot of extra credit.
Awesome professor! Gives out A TON of extra credit. Sometimes it helps to read your textbook also because sometimes he is a bit confusing. Overall, wonderful professor, you can totally tell he loves what he does.
Tanda really cares for his students and wants you to do well. He is always available for help - through email or meeting him. Class has 2 exams, 2 homework assignments and then a group presentation and paper. He is difficult to understand but reading the book is helpful . I'd recommend this class.
Dr. T sets his students up for success and genuinely wants to see you succeed. In order to do well on tests go through launchpad multiple times and review warm up questions! If you do these things and understand the concepts you will do well on the exams. If you ever have a question Dr. T is more than willing to meet with you!
I love Dr. T! he has been my favorite professor at OU! he can be hard to understand at first, but you get used to it! His class is very hard but look over learning curve questions and the study guides he gives you and you'll be fine! Go to class and you'll get a TON of extra credit! He's very fun and he really cares about his students!
Dr. T is one of the worst professors I've experienced here at OU. He is very unclear in every topic and his tests do not align with course material. He gives a ton of extra credit, so if you want a decent grade just do the bonus assignments/ clicker questions.
Dr. T is extremely knowledgable, but he really really wants you to know all of the information, no exceptions. Rarely curves, so averages weren't very high. He is a tough grader at times. His lectures are very clear and he's dedicated to you knowing this stuff. He thinks of very creative ways to get participants in class to help with examples
Dr. Tanda is an excellent teacher. On the first day of class I was worried I wouldn't be able to understand his accent, but it gets easier as you go. He provides "warm-up" questions before exams that are EXTREMEMLY similar to the exam questions. Studying the warm-up questions and the Launchpad assignments is the easiest way to an A.
This class was HARD. I really didn't like this class. Very good teacher, but kinda hard to understand. VERY funny though & SO many demonstrations & a ton of interactive things. If I actually knew what I was doing I may have enjoyed the class more.
Tanda is a great teacher. He really works to help his students do well. He really wants you to understand the material. His demonstrations during lecture are hilarious! If you take Bios 1700, make sure you get Tanda. I want him to be my grandpa!!!
Loved him, great personality and has a big heart for teaching.
Coolest professor I ever had the pleasure of having during my time at OU. He gives you in-depth knowledge on the subject, and even give extra credit for those just not understanding the material yet.
Dr. Tanda was an amazing teacher!! He gave us a ton of extra credit opportunities! Make sure you go to class because you get attendance points (and possibly extra credit) by doing the clicker questions. Tanda really wants everyone to succeed and is an excellent teacher, you just really have to study for his tests!
Tanda was an amazing professor to have. He made himself very available to students outside of class. He also really cared about the students and how they did. Tanda knew the material well and gave awesome lectures. He was funny, too. 10/10, would recommend to a friend!
BIOS 1700 is an intro bio class and used to weed out all the pre-med kids. The worst part is that I could barely understand this dude because he has a really thick Japanese accent, making it hard to learn an already hard subject. In his notes, he primarily uses pictures with small descriptions by them. However, he's so sweet and does care about us.
Dr. Tanda can be difficult to hear at times during lectures so it is easy to get lost, but the textbook offers all the information you need to know to do well. Overall he is a good professor and tries very hard to make the material as easy to understand as possible. Lots of point opportunities other than exams. Solid choice for any science class.
Dr. T is by far the best professor I've had at OU so far! He really cares about his students and makes sure that you learn the material! His class is difficult, but if you do all the learning curves and getting ready for exams on launchpad that really helps. He also gives a lot of extra credit so take advantage of the clicker questions.
Dr. T is a very cute Asian man who is respected by his students. There were some things about that made the class hard for me, though. His accent is very strong and you basically can't understand what he is saying unless you read the PowerPoint. He cares very much about education, but he is not great at teaching difficult concepts.
Lecture heavy & hard to understand, but you get used to it. He is one of my favorite professors. Good guy, funny in class. Explains things really well. Cares if you're failing & loves to help. He is smart as hell. The class is hard because the material is hard & his exams are mostly all application not memorization
Tanda was great. Interesting man, tests are hard but so much extra credit given if going to class
Dr. T is an extremly funny man. Accent is tough to understand especially when he is really excited about a certain topic. Almost every question on exam is fill in or extended response. Tough grader, he wants you to know it his way or no way. Lots of extra credit though. Received a D, however he is still a good guy. Took w/ griffin after & got an A
Dr. Tanda is by far my favorite professor. While sometimes it may be hard to understand him due to his accent, he is an amazing teacher and explains things very well. He does a lot of interactive demonstrations which makes the class much more engaging. Make sure to come to class! He gives out a lot of attendance points. Tests are hard.
Read the book. Go to class, he gives lots of extra credit. Curves exams fairly. Do warm up questions, they are the exam.
Very do-able tier 3 class. 2 homeworks that were basically take home exams worth 7% of grade each, 2 exams worth like 18% of grade each, one group presentation and paper worth 25% each. Fair grader. Go to class, take good notes, use book if don't understand class figures. Know warm up questions for exams. Accessible, caring, fast email responder.
Dr. Tanda's lectures can be a bit disengaging sometimes, but he's very accessible, answers questions well, offers lots of extra credit, and holds test review sessions outside of class. His in-class demonstrations are helpful too!
He is a very respectable professor and very kind, but the lectures are very hard to follow. The powerpoints consist of the figures from the book which don't have explanations to go along with them and when he tries to explain the content, it's hard to understand him.
Tanda was one of my favorite professors my first semester here at OU. His accent is difficult for maybe the first two weeks and then it just becomes easier to understand. He is willing to help you as much as he possibly can, but his tests are application based so YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE MATERIAL.
I love Dr. T. He can be hard to understand at times when he gets excited about topics, but he's a really caring professor. Take the PLTL if you can and study the packets, study the WarmUp questions, and you'll be fine. My grade was only as low as it was because of my lack of effort.
Cares about his students, knows his material, and wants everyone to succeed. Can be too particular about grading when he wants a certain answer, but overall a great professor. Two homework assignments and two exams for the first part of the class and a group project (paper and presentation) for the last part.
Bios 1700 was one of my favorite classes. Tanda gives great lectures, very heavy on figures so definitely print out his textbook figures or lecture slides before class, and he's very receptive to questions. He offers review sessions before each test (very helpful!) and warm-up questions (do them!). Buy the hardcopy textbook, you'll need to read it.
Dr. Tanda is such a sweet man and he really cares about your success. He is often difficult to understand but you get used to it. The content is very difficult but he tries his best to make it the simplest it could be. My grade was due to my lack of studying.
Exam averages were always D's or Fs
Dr. T is not a great professor. His lectures are unorganized and sporadic. The material is easy if you actually study and stay on top of it. The material he wants you to learn is different compared to the other genetics professors. Extra credit(a lot) to make up for lack of teaching (tophat & weekly LC's) Weekly LC's are very similar to tests
Lots of work to stay on top of.
He makes hes lectures interesting and has people participate. And if youre sick hell help you out how he can! I had to go to the ER and he sent me all the lecture material and gave me an extension. A great guy all around ide recommended him to anyone.
I LOVE Dr. T. He is such a kind person and is very understanding. His lectures can get kind of confusing, but once you review the textbook in combination with the notes, you will do just fine. He does in class demonstrations and makes it very clear what will and will not be on the tests. He also does review sessions before the test which I enjoy.
Dr. T is one of the nicest professors I have ever met. He cares about every student as long as you show you are putting the effort in. There is a decent amount of work in this class, but that's expected for any bio class here. DISTRIBUTE YOUR WORK LOAD!! Study for tests, do your homework, go to office hours, you will pass.
Dr. T was the greatest teacher I had my first semester he was caring and you could reach out to him to extra help. He loves what he does and it shows in his lectures. He is the sweetest man and gives extra credit questions during the week. Going to class is very beneficial because the class is difficult but Dr. T is the perfect teacher for it.
For a BIOS major I highly suggest this class, there are no exams, but daily lecture quizzes. If you want to do great go to every lecture so you can easily do the lecture quizzes and homework. Class is easy and most homework assignments have a maximum of two sentences per answer..... You also get like 4 days to complete each assignment. Great class.
Lots of assignments, but they all help to prepare you for tests. Read the study guides and test prep he provides, he pulls most of the extended response from them. I although there is points for attendance, I would say as long as you read and go over the power points you should be able to get a good grade.
Absolutely love Professor Tanda. I was really struggling due to my mental state this semester and he went out of his way to make sure I was okay, even taking time out of his own day. I recommend using the homework given to practice for tests. There are so many opportunities for additional credit if you attend class. He's amazing, I love Dr. Tanda.
Dr. T is an amazing professor and an extremely kind person. You will succeed if you take time to take notes, understand the homework, go to his office hours, and study for the exams. He will always make time to meet with you and answer all your questions. His lectures are often very interactive and engaging! He wants all of his students to succeed.
Dr. Tanda is the ideal professor for this course: he teaches with a passion, responds to emails in a timely manner, and his lectures are informative. While the content could be difficult for one without a biological background, Tanda uses in-class demos to emphasize concepts and holds review sessions before each test. Attending class is worth it
Dr. T is a great professor. Even though the content can be difficult, he is accessible outside of lecture and cares about his students. Make sure to use the study materials that he provides.
Although the class itself is hard he is a really good professor. He is kind and caring to all of his students and he goes above and beyond in helping all of us succeed. He is very helpful and responsive to emails and questions. The class itself was hard and the exams were too. If you do the study guides and warm-ups you will be fine.
One of the best people ever! He cares so much about students and will probably remember your name and many things about you. Lectures were dense, but that's kind of unavoidable in 1700. The tests were not hard compared with how complicated the material is. SO many resources to use to succeed. Mountain of reading, but it's optional.
He's hard to understand and keep up with but very kind
I absolutely love Dr. T, that man will do anything for his students if they show they care, his tests can be hard but if you show up to class he gives out an insane number of bonus points which should easily make up for it.
Good professor! Willing to give extra credit if exams don't go well. Lectures can be a little dense at times, but as long as you study before the exam it's not too bad. A little hard to understand, but he's a really great and caring guy! A lot of online homework, but it's not too difficult. Exams are mostly multiple choice, a few extended response.
Dr. T is the most caring professor I have. He remembers students by name and will take time to help struggling students. All homework is online, and he gives a lot of extra credit for attending lecture. The exams are similar to homework. He gives a lot of resources to study for exams including study guides, review sessions, and extra assignments.
Hes great but you have to show up to class to get attendance points and to understand the material because it goes quickly.
Dr. T is the best. He truly does care about his students and provides so many resources for people to succeed. His lectures can be a little confusing at times but he is always open to clarify things. He also provides lots of extra credit to boost your grade. If you're taking 1700 I would absolutely recommend him.
Super fun and entertaining class. Dr.T is very kind and makes fun relations to the material with demonstrations, candy, and even free t shirts for people who volunteer. The class is challenging but very doable with the extra credit he gives.
Dr. T is a very sweet guy & cares about his students a lot. However, I recommend watching youtube videos, going to SI, and reading the book. Some of the concepts are challenging if you don't prepare for them, BUT he does some great examples in class that make difficult lessons more approachable. I would recommend him to anyone taking BIOS 1700.
Dr. Tanda is awesome. Genetics is dense and tough to understand, but he compensates by giving a ridiculous amount of bonus. If you show up to class, do the homework, and study it should be an easy A. Tanda is also super accomodating and clearly wants his students to succeed.
I took genetics at a different university and nearly failed. I was so scared to take this class, but I'm so glad I did. Dr. Tanda makes genetics so easy to understand, and the review sessions given by the TA are so helpful for exams. Even at 8:30 AM, this man is still trying to make everyone smile. Such a great professor.
Dr. T is the absolute goat. This man truly cares about every single student in his class. The material is difficult but he is great at explaining it in a way you can understand. Reading isn't mandatory but I highly suggest you read the textbook. He also gives a lot of bonus points. If you show up and do your work you can pass with an A.
He is really the sweetest person, but he seems too smart to actually relay what he's trying to explain. Almost 80% of your grade is going to be exams. He does give out a few points of extra credit which is very helpful. I wouldn't take this class if you have a hard time learning by lecture or you'll be stuck teaching yourself all the material.
Tanda is the best! As a business major who started a pre-med track this semester, I was actually really scared to take a class as dense as bio, but Tanda made a scary bio class very doable. If you get the chance to take a class with him, do it! He is the sweetest, and he really does care for students! He also gives a TON of chances for extra credit
I loved this class. Dr. T makes a stressful biology class super fun. Yes, his lectures are a lot to handle, but if you study and pay attention you will do great. He cares about his students and adds fun jokes into his lectures. He has lots of opportunity for extra credit so take advantage of that because a lot of grading is from exams!
The class gets pretty difficult at times but Tanda really cares about your understanding. He's very willing to answer questions and provide feedback. He also gives extra credit TopHat questions almost daily which will help boost your grade from the exams
Tanda is honestly such an adorable guy, but he wasn't my kind of professor. The class was super early, and I was tired, and it didn't help that Tanda speaks softly and doesn't have the most interesting of slides. If you take this class at the 8:35 am time, I hope you really like coffee! Prepare to read the book to fully understand material.
Tanda is a super sweet guy and you can really tell he loves what he teaches. He was a little hard to understand at first, and his lectures can be a little fast paced. But, as long as you apply yourself you shouldn't have much trouble. There is also a lot of opportunities for extra credit which helped me a lot; overall a solid class.
I absolutely love Dr. Tanda. He is an amazing, kind man. So wholesome and silly. Sometimes his lectures are hard to follow, but if you skim the textbook, it'll help you out a lot. He gave extra credit frequently in my class and it saved many people's grades.
I failed this class due to constant illness, but Dr. Tanda is a great professor. He's very soft-spoken, yes, but his caring for all of his students shines bright. He discusses slides fast but well, and when I was making up an exam we slowly walked to his office and made small talk. He cares about your life and what is happening in it.
