Very boring & hard class, don't bother.
Terrible class, doesn't explain well. Changes due dates of papers at last minute!!
Worst professor ever, the guy gives a paper assignment with no directions and then weeks later moves the due date up by 2 weeks. He's very unclear in class when explaining things and is very unhelpful when you have questions, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU PLAN ON PASSING.
the worst and most unfair professor i have ever had in three years of college, do not take this class.
i expected this class to be difficult, but this professor will manage to find a great amount of fault in anything you hand in to him. he is vindictive in his grading, and is often unnecessarily cruel to students. that being said, it is an interesting class, but don't count on getting a good grade.
AWFUL! He is disrespetful to students & he expects you to know everything already. He can't spell either. Unfair & you have no ideea how he grades. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
OMG he is so bad! You lecture EVERY min that you are in there I know that that is what you are suppose to do when you go to college but he is horrible at it. He is the meanest proff I have ever had! BAD!!!!!
This guy is such a jerk! He is not helpful AT ALL and his lectures are SOOOO boring! He is very rude when you ask for help. The best thing you can do is sit back and try not to be noticed. He is also very unclear on due dates and expects you to have assignments done months in advanced. STAY AWAY!
IF you get suckered into this class dont buy ANY of the books!
Solomon has a fairly thick accent and is indistinguishable often during lecture.
These people obviously don't know what they're talking about! Solomon is one of the best teacher's I've had. As long as you come to class prepared and do the work, you will be fine. He has a great deal of respect towards his students, and he is very enthusiastic about his subject!
Solomon is one of the nicest people in the history of the world!
If you come to class and study for the exam you will do fine. He does have a thick accent but if you sit in the first 3 rows and pay attention you will do fine. He highly respects his students so give the same respect back and you will be in great shape.
HE IS A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! HE IS NOT ORGANIZED, TAKES FOREVER TO RESPOND TO E-MAILS, AND IS UNCLEAR REGARDING DUE DATES AND GUIDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENTS. HE KNOWS A LOT ABOUT HIS SUBJECT, BUT SHOWS A COMPLETE LACK OF RESPECT FOR HIS STUDENTS BY NOT GIVING DUE DATES AND GUIDELINES. OH YEAH, DON'T BUY THE RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR THIS CLASS!
Solomon is great. He is really funny and cares about his students. He does have an accent but he speaks very clearly so you can always understandd what he is saying and if you get confused he will write it on the board so you can just copy in into your notes. great professor I would totally take him again.

He enjoys teaching and loves to talk about his kids, but not the point where you would know their life story. His ethiopian accent is tough sometimes to decipher, but he is always happy to repeat himself as he knows many students did not always understand him.His tests were quite easy(how many history tests are multiple choice)never takes attendance
Although not the clearest English speaker, his generosity, and excitement for teaching can be seen everyday on his face. Always willing to repeat what he said, asks questions in class, and is concerned that his dialect will turn students off or give him a bad rating on this sire or in the class evaluation at the end of the semester.
Can't understand him. Nice guy but not a good teacher.
This guy sucks, he is not helpful and structures his class in an incredibly nonsensical manner. He is just generally bad, hard to understand, and confusing. If you value your GPA DO NOT take this class.
If you can't understand him your not interested. This guy is the real deal. I didn't always agree with him but he always made me think and his perspective was unlike anyone I ever met. I loved his class. I can't believe how many people gave this guy bad reviews. If you thought he was tough you just don't apply yourself!
His accent is sometimes hard to understand, he teaches the material well, but can't take constructive criticism or questions about his way of teaching
He is an excellent professor but asks too much
HST 379 This class may seem way hard in the begining, but it really is not. If you do the paper and project you automatically get 100 percent on those two, just make sure they are the right lengths/time. you take a HUGE amount of notes but if you do the two study guides for the exams you are going to be set if you know the answers!
This was by far my least favorite class last semester. Professor Getahun is not clear and makes you write pages of notes that will not help you on his tests. My advice: don't get the book and ask specific questions. Also- for the final.. make sure you study all the presentation names. He has an impossible matching section with famous african leaders
He expects you to know everything and read a lot. He is helpful and fun.
African Experience: READ THE TEXT! People whine and moaned about his tests being too hard and that the notes are worthless or he is hard to follow. He has powerpoints that guide his lecture, everything and more he says is in the text. DO THE READING. His tests were EASY, no tricks. Impossible matching? IT IS ALL IN LECTURE AND THE BOOK PEOPLE!
He def. knows his material on the topics that he teaches. but he has a problem with helping his students. Went 3 hours before the exam to ask a simple question and didnt answer because he felt i was not thinking ahead! I still overall didnt mind him but he had mood swings
Tests are difficult. Not helpful whatsoever. Can be very rude.
Lecture can be interesting besides the massive amounts of notes. he is very rude if you have any sort of questions he would often ignore them or yell at you for questing how he graded. i would not take this class with him as a prof
Boring class. Only reason I took it was so I didn't have to take another language. You get EC if you go to every lecture but I'd double check with him because I did go to every class and somehow missed me one day and refused to look at my notes and dates to prove I was there!!!
He's kinda funny but the points are only out of four tests and the tests involve essay questions and stuff. he doesn't always give a study guide so they're sort of hard.
Come-on, give the guy a break! He gives study guide. Why lay? He is helpful and tries to address any concern you have. But, I hate his mandatory attendance policy
The entire class confronted him about how confusing and ridiculous his exams were, so instead of working with his students to make his exams better understood, he gave us a take home final which consisted of writing a 15 page paper about things we never learned four days before it was due THE WEEK OF FINALS. He is so inconsiderate to his students.
I really enjoyed this teacher. He was a very good teacher and kind of funny. His accent made it hard to understand things, but the material explained anything he couldn't. Very easy class because everything on the tests correlated directly to the study guide. I would have got an A if I actually studied. RECOMMENDED!!
Getahun is a very funny and understanding teacher. He works with you if you don't understand things. The tests are very hard so do the reading. He is slightly unorganized with his lectures and writing on the board so be prepared for that. But other than that it's an interesting class.
Completely useless teacher, you cant understand a thing he is saying in class because of his accent & his lack of organization. You have journals and book reports, all of which he grades extremely hard 4's out of 10's. His study guides don't help much.He is also extremely rude and unhelpful. Overall horrible class horrible teacher.
He is a very smart teacher. Yet his class is much too difficult for a 100 level coarse. Also He lacks structure. His exams are very difficult and expects too much. He gave my group a 0 on our presentation and the reason is still unknown. AVOID THIS CLASS
Worst Experience I've ever had at CMU. I would not recommend this class to anyone. His methods are unorthodox and teaching style is non-existant.
This professor was unorganized. His grading was all over the place. I am still unsure how I could receive 100% on my first journal and 20% on my second, while following the same guide. The study guides are not helpful and his in class notes are insane. I have notebooks filled with useless notes. AVOID this class!
I loved him. He was such a great professor. He is hilarious and so informed on the subject matter. Well worth your money.
He is funny and nice, sometimes it is hard to understand him, however he uses power points that have all the information that was on the exam. Over all its one of those classes that you get out what you put in.
I'm a 3.5 GPA Student. I received a C- because his grading was that hard. I went to every class, took notes, and still struggled. His exams make no sense and his grading scale is the most confusing thing ever. Harshest grader on campus and I would NOT recommend him to anyone in the future.
This teacher can barely speak English, everything important that he says out loud he mumbles. His power points are VERY long. He has the hardest exams you can think of, and his study guides, if he gives them, are general ideas nothing helpful. He doesn't give you any info on how to do a presentation so you are clueless what to do. DO NOT TAKE.
Cool guy, awful professor. His accent is difficult to understand (but I wouldn't hold that against him), his exams are worse. A couple classmates even called him out on his foggy multiple choice questions and answer choices and he was anything but sympathetic. He took my class out for pizza one time so that was cool.
The teacher is RUDE. I was told to not interrupt many times when I visited his office hours(keep in mind I'm not very talkative)When it came to tests they were nearly impossible. I did exactly what was asked of the journal instructions and got a 410. This professor is rude, an unfair grader, and extremely vague when giving instruction AVOID 100%
HST 176 has been one of the worst classes I have taken at CMU. He is a very tough grader and his exams are really hard. He likes to pity himself and has been rude to students. I would find a different UP to take instead of this one!
Professor Getahun made this class nearly impossible to pass unless you dedicated every second of your time to studying for his tests. He was very rude to students and always seemed unpreparedunorganized; he was also an extremely harsh grader on every testexam. This is the only class I have ever had to drop and I regret taking it with him.
He says his lectures correlate with the textbook but he goes from his own memory about what he wants to talk about. Im an A student and received a B- in the class and attended every class. He is not helpful and his quizzes do not reflect material learned in lectures and even reading the book will only minimally help.
Do not take this class! Tests are almost impossible and he grades so hard. I'm taking this class right now and don't think I'll even pass it. I'm a B student and currently have a C- right now...
Talks down to students, Very unorganized
Lectures are all over the place, quizzes and exam are basically impossible. Didnt even use textbook.
I took HST 176 Writing intensive with Solomon. He is a very knowledgeable and funny guy but can be confusing if you lose focus or get behind. He is a difficult grader and expects a lot from his students. If you take this class you need to come to class ready to take notes and ask questions or you'll get easily confused. overall a tough class.
Dr. Getahun is fine in the beginning of the semester with lectures and being very clear with what he wanted us to know. However, as the semester went on he would start to get more and more off topic. When you go back to study for your exams and quizzes sometimes his notes aren't enough and you may need to utilize other resources such as the book!
This was supposed to be my easy class for the semester and ended up being the hardest. He is not clear at all about what will be on the tests and quizzes, his lectures aren't helpful, and he's difficult to understand. Tells you to google things for the test instead of teaching it himself. Avoid if at all possible!
For the love of God do NOT take this class with Solomon. Talks down to students often and then gets upset with lack of class participation. Lecture material is rarely on the actual exam. Isn't personable whatsoever and tells you to google study guide questions if they're not covered in the book or lecture. 10/10 would not recommend.
Do not take this professor. I went to his office hours and asked him to explain why I got an answer wrong on the exam and he told me no. Ive emailed him over 10 times with no response. He doesn't care about you as a student. I told him I'm on the verge of failing his class and he literally responded with "I dont care." AVOID at all costs.
The absolute WORSE professor at CMU campus. He does not care about students what so ever. He does not explain reasoning for answers on exams an even told me to make time for things (history) other than my clinical sight required for my major. He essential does not care and even says to google questions on the study guide. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Test are impossible, Even if going to class everyday and paying attention the test make no sense. Gives very broad study guide but expects you to know every little detail of Africa. Had to retake this class and still didn't do well in it. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS
As long as you read the text, attend the lecture and follow the study guide you will be fine. He is also easy to approach as well as funny. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject. So far I enjoyed his class.
Don't be scared away by all of these comments. Taking these negative comments to heart it was to my pleasure that the professor was very nice and wants his students to do well. He can be hard to understand at times though. Notice many of the people who did not do well in his class failed to use the textbook. Use it! Ask questions if you have them.
Worst professor I've ever had. He will promise opprotunity for extra credit, but will not follow through with it. There are only 5 grades in the entire class, so you have to work extremely hard. There was only 1 paper despite it being a WI, but exams are hell on earth. Very unclear about what you should know and rips apart midterms and the final.
This class seems great in the beginning. Run away. The material is fairly easy. Yet, he only gives a final, midterm, two quizzes, and two book reports and they are graded harshly. I am an all A student. I have a D in here. He is not understanding and can be quite rude as well.
Solomon was by far the worst professor i've ever had. Doesn't care about your grade, very rude when you're looking for help, and the content on the exam doesn't match the material learned in class or in the book. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am a 4.0 student and I'm getting a C. Save your GPA and avoid this man at all costs
By far the worst professor. He DOES NOT care. Also doesn't give clear instructions on papers. Very strict grading. It's a WRITING intensive class but it's mainly test. Never answered my emails when I had to miss class for having the flu. Told me he wouldn't accept a paper I wrote because it was written, even if I typed it, even though it was done.
If you read the book, which he clearly says, and pay attention and go to every class, then you will be fine. There's not a lot of assignments but it's still okay if you do bad on one of them. I got a D on the first exam and then got A's on the rest of the assignments and I finished with an A. He also offered 5% of extra credit. He's not that bad.
DO NOT take this professor. He does not care about his students. When you ask for help he replies with broad explanations that do not help. The exams are not based on the lecture at all, you're better off just reading the book. Oh and there are ZERO opportunities to turn in work late. He has no concern for his student's academic successes.
Absolute WORST professor I've had at CMU. Notes are repetitive and often contained misspelled words. Lectures are long, boring, and an environment where you don't feel comfortable asking questions for risk of being ridiculed. Exams are extremely difficult and are nothing like study guides. Extremely tough grader! Very hard to please. DON'T TAKE.
This was absolutely one of the hardest classes i have ever taken at CMU, don't forget that this was a level 100 class and he made it out to be a 400 level. Exams resemble nothing on the study, you'd be better off looking everything up online than follow his notes. STAY AWAY at all costs!
STAY AWAY FROM SOLOMON!!! he gives terrible feedback on assignments and if you ask for help prepare for the rudest encounter of your life. He gives study guides the day before test and quizzes and those are like necessities to pass to his test. Buttt to even do good on his study you either got to read the book on your own or google search it.
He won't baby you. If you ask a dumb question, he will let you know. If you ask an intelligent question, he will give an intelligent answer. He thoroughly enjoys teaching the subject and is passionate about what he is talking about. Take good notes, spend time on your papers, and read the book. Work hard and get an A, slack off and get a C.
I'm a senior business student here at CMU. This was the worst professor I have had yet. His grading is unpredictable. His lectures are extremely dry, long, and fairly low quality. I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone; I would even go to say avoid at all costs. Comments floated around the classroom such as "how does this man have a job".
Awful. awful. awful. Lectures are SOOO boring. The notes do not line up with study guides which makes it impossible to study for exams and quizzes. I do not recommend this professor at all. Super hard to pass.
Okay people, don't take this class. This professor does not care about his students, he flat out says he does not accept emails and his is unwilling to help when questions are asked. We had an open book quiz but he didn't tell anyone is was open book so majority of students didn't have it with them. Hardest 100 level class I have ever taken. RUN!
I took this class in my final semester. I had 130 credits with different professors and Solomon was without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had. He is condescending, unclear, and goes off on completely useless tangents. I have aced 500 level biology courses with less effort than it took for me to receive an A- in this class. DO NOT TAKE!
Worst professor I have ever had. If there is any other possible professor you can have, pick them. Solomon was rude and never explained any of his assignments. If you asked for help, he wouldnt offer any advice or additional instruction. Essays were graded extremely hard especially for never being explained. Quizzes were 100 questions with 2 essay
He is by far the WORST prof I have ever taken. He has no respect for his students. He shows zero empathy and will shout your grade out to the class. Exams are vague at best.
The WORST professor I have encountered at CMU. Taking this class was a grave mistake. He is rude and will refuse to answer questions. He failed my whole class on a ROUGH DRAFT essay and wouldn't tell us why and was rude when we asked about it, I dropped the class the very next day. Save yourself the stress and stay away from this man.
Solomon was hands-down one of the worst profs i've had at CMU. He does not know how to teach and did not make me want to come to class. The only reason why I didn't have to go to class is because someone in my class was willing to send the notes on our class GroupMe (which I would recommend creating). I feel like I learned nothing in his class.
Prof. Getahun is hard to understand! When he would ask questions to our class, nobody would understand him. So we would sit in silence forever because... WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HE SAID. Also, not a lot of assignments so when I got just a couple of points off my assignments I was screwed for the semester... I will avoid him forever now
He has his strengths; he is funny, enthusiastic, and clearly very smart. Otherwise, he has tenured professor syndrome. Prepare to have all emails either ignored or responded to in a snarky manner, usually in a 1 sentence response. His writing reads like a riddle too, so good luck deciphering what he's trying to say. Also, NO NEGOTIATING WHATSOEVER
Solomon is a good person and has brief spurts of energy. Unfortunately this isn't the case 99% of the time. Lectures lack energy and are boring/slow/long. PowerPoints packed w wordy and tedious paragraphs w 400+ word slides. Not many points available and grades inconsistently and hard, even rough drafts! He's survivable though just stay strong
Rude/arrogant/condescending. Offers extra credit, but never put it in my final grade? Also, his exams lack intellect, and contain weird wording and grammar/spelling errors. One question on the exam I got wrong and the answer was in my notes. After explaining this, he said I should have read the book. But how are the notes giving the wrong answer???
I would never take a class with Getahun again. I've never dealt with a professor who is so blatantly disrespectful and unfair. Guidelines for grading are unclear and his communication is severely lacking. He admitted to never reading my paper, which he gave me a 3/10 on (this was a rough draft that nearly every student in my class failed, as well).
I love this man. He's a great person, he's very nice, and he's funny. That being said, he cannot teach to save his life. Every single class, he puts a slide up on the board (that's paragraphs long) and then goes silent and waits for everyone to copy it down. Solomon is extremely knowledgeable but has clearly had no education on how to teach others.
He might be the worst professor in the entire University. Professor Getahun does not answer his emails, refuses answer questions after class, and does not put any effort into his classes. It is very clear that he has achieved tenure and is just coasting through the rest of his career. I do not recommend this course.
Solomons class is lecture heavy. His lectures are pretty interesting and he is very knowledgeable about all the material. His grading on papers and written questions is pretty tough. He grades expecting us all to be full-time working historians while 90% of my class are going to be social studies teachers. Good luck having good email communication.
Great professor. You do really need to study for exams as you aren't graded by a ton of things, but overall they were easy if you took notes on lectures and did some of the reading. He loves to chat and it was nice to speak with him. Great guy! Definitely would take a course with him again.
The professor's grading system felt inconsistent and challenging to follow. Often, the assignment criteria were unclear, making it difficult to understand what was expected to achieve a high grade. The lectures tended to be hard to follow.
5 assignments in the grade book. Had a paper, with a graded rough draft and final draft. Zero direction or rubric. group project without any directions. When asked he said “it's in the syllabus”. The syllabus says do group project about the paper. No time, no format, or rubric. Presentation 9/10 in the grade book no explanation or feedback.
This class was quite difficult. He offers no clear grading criteria on anything. You only are graded by 5 things. He talks very quiet at times. Slides are very wordy. Exams were online and final was open book so that made it a bit easier but still was very frustrating.
I have taken this class 2 times now, both with Solomon. If not for him, I do believe I would've passed the class the first time. He's a very nice guy and it's clear he knows what he's talking about. But his lectures are insanely boring, and this is a class you can pass without going to class (that is if attendance wasn't mandatory).
Really nice guy so I feel bad but he is a very bad professor. He has slides that he goes through in class but doesn't talk about them much and just has you write them down. He has not mentioned the text book and even assigned another book that he only mentioned on the first day of class and hasn't spoken about since.
