TAN can not teach at all, well not effectively. great jokes but teaching is awful! tests in his class will cause students to go mental.
great indtructor
His class was hard. A combination of difficult subject and his inability to really help the student understand the finer aspects made it a close call- nearly didn't pass the tests with a 76 (the minimum grade allowable by WCU). Read the book and do all practice questions you can get your hands on, and you'll make it.
The class is not easy...but it is an excellerated course! He's willing to help you succeed in nursing. :)
I am a top student in school and have never had problems with a class or teacher. Worst teacher I have ever had. You can study as much as you want. His tests aren't even complete sentences and are confusing. HORRIBLE TEST MAKER. He never has time for his students and his favorite phrase is "this is the way it is." Good luck, you will need it.
Came into the class first day with the impression that I was entering hell for the first time and he ended up being one of my favorite teachers. This class is difficult, there is no sugar coating it. I punched the school walls because I failed my second test but that was out of sheer frustration. Worked my butt off and passed with a B. Funny guy.
Tan is a good professor but his tests were confusing. Read ATI book and do lots of practice questions. If he says in class that something will be on the test, IT WILL! This class is definitely a specialty course and we shouldn't have been tested so in depth, esp. since our clinical nurses NEVER demonstrated what he taught. Good luck.
I began this course completely unmotivated after doing horrible on the first 2 exams and unhappy with the way Prof. Tan taught. However, by busting my butt off and asking him for some advice, I successfully passed the course. READ the book and ATI. Do questions from the success book because some may actually show up on exams.
This class is ridiculous. I made outlines of all the chapters, did questions, and went to the student tutorsstudy sessions. It didn't matter. His tests are grammatically screwed and confusing. I'm close to a 4.0 GPA and never had issues with a class before. His favorite saying is "that's the way things are," and is absolutely no help. Good luck!
Professor Tan was great! His expectations are high, but you leave the class really knowing your stuff. Pay attention in lecture, read ATI, and do practice questions. There are no hidden secrets with him. Whatever he says will be on the exam will definitely be there.
I went into the class thinking Tan would be horrible due to stories I heard, but boy was everyone wrong. He's an amazing teacher. He really knows how to lecture on the important stuff and helps you remember it. Be sure to pay attention in class because he tells you what's on the exams. You also have to read in order to pass. Great class!
I love him! His exams are not easy but always read and attend Bekkedahl's exam reviews. Those helped a lot! For the quizzes, know the questions and the answers on the back of the ATI and textbook because that's what they use. Other than that he is an amazing professor and clinical instructor! If I can pass this class, so can you!
He's Awesome!! If you don't like to read then you better learn before entering his class. He is a great teacher!
IF YOU THINk YOU CAN CHEAT YOUR WAY THROUGH MENTAL HEALTH THEN ITS YOUR OWN FAULT IF YOU FAIL THIS CLASS. PROFESSOR TAN IS A GREAT TEACHER! If you don't read then you can't pass and its your own fault. He will always clarify what is confusing its up its your own fault if you don't have any questions.
Professor Tan is amazing! He is very very knowledgeable in the material, and he always answers any questions you might have. You learn a lot in his class, but it is not an easy class. You have to read, and know your stuff, and he does a great job in bringing the pieces together.
Professor Tan is amazing ! I have never enjoyed a class so much. Mental health was very difficult, in fact when I first started I thought I would never make it through, but if you work hard, read, study, and pay attention you will do fine ! Tan is so smart and so knowledgeable about the subject he teaches !! I really enjoyed his class !!
Mr. Tan is one of the best professors at WCU. He is straight forward and funny, he makes 5 hour lectures bearable & fun. I didn't pass his first exam of 2 quizzes, then I consulted w/ him & ended up w/ a solid B. He is always available, through emails/texts/phone calls. I had him as a clinical instructor as well & I'm super happy. Take him!!!!
Mr. Tan is a great professor. His class was difficult, but he always encourages and wants his students to succeed. He actually lectures unlike many other professors, and gives examples to help the students understand the concept better. I highly recommend Mr. Tan
I actually tried my hardest to switch out of Tan's class because all I've heard were nightmares about his class. But I actually loved MH with Tan! He's a great teacher you just have to put in the work.
Mr. Tan is a great professor. His class was challenging, but I learned a lot. Don't be afraid to take his class, he is one of the best! Also because of him, I'm inspired to become a psych nurse one day.
Great everything. I loved him and his class.
Pretty solid choice for Mental Health, he lectures well and is willing to answer questions in class. The material is heavily based on medications, interventions, and S/E... along with the interventions, S/S of the mental health issues. Make sure you read! He explains it to you as well as he can, but it's mostly the material itself that's difficult.
Most difficult, but if you work your butt off you can pass his class. I bombed the first 2 exams but stepped up my studying game and ended up with a B-. So its doable, just hard. The medication sheets he gives out is your ticket to passing. Study those medications like your life depends on it and you will be ok. Focus on ATI.
he is just reading through ati books nothing extra. i am not interested anything from his lecture.
Excellent teacher. He explain everything to you. Make sure to record his lecture and study the ATI.
Read ATI and handouts he gives. Quizzes are very challenging . The class is not easy you have put some effort.
Amazing instructor! Everyone is always scared of him and everyone mentions that he is a hard teacher. as long as you understand the content you'll pass, his lectures are very clear. he doesn't give study guides but he will give you ideas of what will be on the test. meds are not that hard as long as you give yourself time to learn them. i loved Tan
Professor Tan was AMAZING!!!!!! I was told that this class was going to be very hard... which it was but it was doable! If you go to class every time and read your textbook/ATI you will be fine. His lectures are so fun to listen and he really explains everything. I would take him again 100%.
Professor Tan is amazing, and I loved his class! He breaks down the material in a clear, easy way to understand. He bases his lectures off of ATI, but I found just listening to him was extremely helpful for testing. Yes there are a lot of meds, but he gives a lot of examples that correlate with them. I highly recommend taking his class!!
Best professor at WCU, great lecturer and funny. Class is really tough but PAY ATTENTION! He only tests you on things he explicitly says in class so take good notes.
Mental Health is a really difficult class, you have to read in order to understand the concepts. Prof Tan, is really fun and he makes mental health enjoyable. His tests are difficult but he gives you everything you need to be prepared for the quizzes. If you don't study, you won't pass. You definitely have to put in the work to succeed.
Professor Tan is the best instructor for MH. He explains things and cracks jokes so that you can understand the material. This makes the class more enjoyable. I used the ATI book, the med sheets, and his power points for the quizzes. Know the med sheets like the back of your hand, it will make your life a lot easier.
Professor Tan is such a great teacher! You really have to incorporate his powerpoints, the textbook, the ATI book and the success book to really be prepared for his quizzes. He makes learning about mental health very exciting and interesting. His quizzes are medication heavy, so it's important to review the medication sheets he hands out.
He's average. His tests are hard. You really have to read the book. What I've noticed though is that he does not really extend himself to the students, very impersonal. Does not check on the students and just go about his lectures then leave when it's time to go home.
The worst professor at WCU period. His tests have nothing to do with his lectures. If you are in his class you should switch out before you fail. His tutoring sessions are not helpful.
I have never struggled in a class in my entire life as much as I did in Mental Health. He makes this class A LOT harder than it needs to be. His quizzes are full of what he likes to call "distractors", and expects you to know every little thing. He will find ways to distract you and trick you on his quizzes and especially the final. His way more in
His lectures are amusing but that is it. His exams are very challenging and I doubt another MH instructor could pass his class. He should definitely be re-evaluated. I understand school is challenging but his class never followed the syllabus. You literally need to read 4 books to pass.
Be ready to study extra hard in this class. This means that you need to read 4 books and study all of the extra materials he told you to study, which one week is not enough time to be prepared. His test is way too tough for students (who is still a newbie for the subject.) If you don't have any mental health background, avoid him at all costs.
If you want to make your life hell, this is the perfect professor to take. He acts if nursing is based only on MH, and that is all they will test you on NCLEX is the things he teaches you. I have had hard professors in the past, but nothing like him. He doesn't care and i really think he finds pleasure in making mental health extremely hard for stu
No matter how much you read or learn, professor Tan will make sure that you struggle on his quizzes,
One of the worst experiences I have had at a class and a professor. He is so hard, goes so fast, and doesn't even give the students a chance to ask questions. super condescending and quizzes are way off from what is taught. stay away
Good luck! He does not care how hard you try he will not help his student's not one bit! He is hard all the way until the end of the class and there is no hope if you are struggling. I would take someone else. I studied way to hard for this class, take someone else honestly.
Let me tell you something about Soloman Tan. I took this teacher back in 2012 and I was facing very serious Issues and brought him a serious doctors note. You know what he did to me on my final grade he put 4/10 on my participation giving me exactly 75.9 failing my .1 and I showed up to all his study sessions and classes. I should've got a B!
There are no words to possibly describe this man. Never met a person who simply doesn't care and is so inconsistent. He teaches one thing and tells you to focus on it, well yeah that is a LIE. He will test you on whatever he wants, so just learn every single thing even though most of it isn't important or won't be on the NCLEX.
Professor Tan is one of the BEST professors I have encountered at WCU. He is passionate about mental health. He covers a lot of material but again let me remind you this is an accelerated nursing program so if you're looking for an "easy grade" he is not the professor to take. You must study come on people its nursing . Prepare to work ! #THEBESTMH
Great professor. STUDY: ATI book, Power Points, Lecture, tutoring session. I am not a gifted student or anything but I study last minute and get B's his lectures are that good. Just pay attention you'll be fine. He definitely prepares you for the Proctored Exam, all his students do good. The proctored exam can drop your crit 6-12% so BE PREPARED.
Professor Tan is honestly one of my favorite professors! He made Mental Health fun and interesting. Many people say not to take him, but do not listen to what other people say. Hes amazing! Mental health in general is DIFFICULT, in any class you have to work hard for your grade. Professor Tan gives you many resources to help you!
Clear favorites in class. Tests are extremely tough. It almost doesn't seem fair bc he makes the answer choices super confusing. For the final exam, it's like he took all the difficult questions and put them altogether. If you think you're studying enough, his tests will shut you down. I was doing well in nursing school until I took his class.
I would highly recommend you take literally anyone but Professor Tan. He puts on a huge front that he cares about his students, it's a lie. His tests are unrealistically difficult. They are nothing like the lecture. Be prepared to study 4 books for the quizzes and you might pass. I was doing great in nursing school until I took his class.
Professor Tan is AMAZING! Honestly, mental health nursing is challenging. You will need to utilize the txtbook, ATI book, and Mental health success book to do well. Prof Tan is truly passionate about what he teaches, is incredibly intelligent, and wants to see his student succeed. I learned so much from this class.
Acts like he cares, terrible with communication through email. Decent class, wish there was more authenticity in his teachings :(
I would highly recommend not to take Professor Tan's class. He is a very nice man, don't get me wrong, but his quizzes are the most difficult I've ever had in my life. I was doing fine in nursing school until I took his class. Taking his class was such a bad decision. Not to mention, he is terrible with communication through email.
Avoid at all costs! Take the LOA if necessary. His tests are unfair & tricky. He'll have a SATA with a 7 answer bank. And only one correct choice. He's that guy. His tests are totally unfair & WCU will always back him up over the students. My class started with 31, and ended with 11. Everyone failed the final. It's not the students. It's him.
I never had problems in nursing school until I took Professor Tan's class. His tests are unrealistically difficult. He sets his students up for failure. He acts like he cares but he doesn't. Don't take him for mental health. You will regret it.
This professor is one of the worst I've ever had. His quizzes are so difficult, its like he wants you to fail. There is no way to prepare for the final exam. You just have to hope you guess right and pass. Do not take Professor Tan for mental health.
WOW, so many reviews here are repeats of the same complaint: "I was doing so well in nursing school until..." Listen. Professor Tan is an amazing professor and knows his stuff about mental health. He WILL challenge you to learn. If you wanted an easy A, it won't happen. With that being said, an A IS possible. I did well in his class.
Avoid at all costs. There are a lot of negative reviews for a reason. The positive ones are fishy and formulaic. My class started with 31 people. It ended with 11. EVERYONE FAILED HIS FINAL. Everyone. If you land on him, take the LOA. It's not a problem with the class; It's a problem with Tan and WCU is ok with it, because he makes WCU money.
Avoid at all costs. He is knowledgeable but his tests are hard. You will study and still have trouble on his tests. He doesnt communicate well. He has clear favorites in class. You will literally have to dedicate your entire life to his class if you want to pass. Youll have to listen to lectures over and over and use 4 books to maybe pass tests
Tan is one of those professor that prepare you for the real world. Mental health is tough, those who didn't take it seriously failed and decide to blame him lol. He's not an easy A but it is definitely possible. Don't let the negative reviews fool you this is an excelerated program, pay attention study hard and you'll be fine. Attend his tutoring.
I do not recommend professor Tan. He is a very good at teaching but his quizzes are way way too hard. This class is supposed to be an intro to MH but his quizzes and final are not introductory level. My whole class did well on ATI proctored but nobody passed his Final.. That is ridiculous!! what is the point of giving a final that nobody will pass?
Horrible class!! you will hate nursing school if you get this person!! Avoid him at all cost!! Students should petition to replace this guy! He is a waste of MONEY and TIME!! Mental health shouldn't be that extra hard! Everyone says mental health is hard, but the actual problem is not the class, its TAN!! He is very unfair..
Honestly, I don't see how people are rating him so low. He's actually super nice and funny, is a clear lecturer and he basically tells you what you need to know. Read the chapters and use the ppts as an outline. The success book is also helpful and make sure to attend his reviews. His class is definately NOT easy so you really have to work for it.
You have to study every single day. This is not a joke or overstatement. Many students fail this class and it is NOT a class you want to do over. Do yourself a favor and do it right the first time. Study every single day. Tan is a good teacher but the subject is hard. Dont blame him for your grade its on you to work your hardest.
Professor Tan is great, hard but great. His lectures are fun and engaging and he explains the topics very well. The quizzes are hard but as long as you study from his lectures and the ATI books you will do fine. For our class he didn't proctor the exams but I'm not sure if he does that for each class. If you're willing to work hard take this class
The people giving Professor Tan a good review were definitely favored in class. I worked my *** off and passed but Professor Tan favors students. He is hard to reach outside of class. Never checks his emails or the remind app. Spends hours of lecture talking about useless side convos and doesnt care if students do well in his class. Stay away.
Professor Tan was the toughest grader , and my favorite professor so far in nursing school. His exams are tricky, so you gotta have to study ALOT! He makes the lecture fun. Not an easy class, but if you want to LEARN and CHALLENGE yourself take this professor! Also, attend his tutoring VERY Helpful!
This an AP level of mental health. Has no sympathy for students. Reached out to him week 4, tan reached back wk 9. Studied very hard for the class used the text, success, ATI and nclex text and still his quizzes were hard for me to pass. He will fail you with happiness. To those who say those who write bad reviews is bc they didnt study is a lie.
He is a REAL professor. You need to learn a lot in this class for a good reason. He will hold you up to it and you have to study. If you are in nursing school to chill and copy the homework, then yes 90% will fail. Spend good time on this class, come in prepared and read the chapters before his lectures and you will see the difference.
This is by far the TOUGHEST course i have ever taken!! you will definitely learn a lot in his class but don't get discouraged about all the negative feedback, professor Tan really wants you to learn which will benefit you in the future. Don't give up and STUDY A LOT and you will pass!!!
Tan knows this subject very well and can be pretty funny BUT his tests are very tricky. I had a very hard time with this class. He does not budge and he does not curve. I would not take him due to how difficult and tricky his tests are. Sidenote-Trying to get a hold of him is also difficult.
Professor Tan is passionate about mental health. He knows his stuff and is a great instructor. I was very anxious to take his class when reading all of his reviews but was shocked to see how much of a nice person he was when I actually got to his class. Listen closely to his lectures and attend his review sessions and you will pass.
Worst teacher ever! There were a lot of discrepancies with his PowerPoints and quizzes. Beware because he will add new information one day before the quiz and on the same day of without informing his students. Be sure to read the books and find other sources to prepare you for his quizzes/exams because his PowerPoints are not enough. Avoid him!
Hes terrible. He knows his topic and thrives on making his tests hard. you have to use your book, ATI book, and practice questions to pass. You have to study every single day. He is smart but seems like he doesnt enjoy teaching or helping students understand. If you dont print out things before class, he will talk too fast for you to write it down
Its up to you if you want to fail take him . He is impossible do not take him.
This guy has terrible lectures
If you want to pass NURS 222, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Save yourself. He is HORRIBLE. I have never had a teacher that simply doesn't care about their student. His tests are SO HARD and I honestly don't know why she is allowed to teach.
Professor Tan is a good lecturer. He makes the class fun and light. I was nervous before taking his class because of the reviews, but it turned out he is one of the best professors in WCU who really teaches. You will definitely learn in his class.
He is ok.
A few people were smart enough to drop most of us struggled. Lots of busy work reading slides that are so abbreviated it is hard to make sense. The professor is very difficult to get a hold of and does not respond promptly.
He is a great professor. His lectures are always funny. Professor Tan is an awesome lecturer. You will definitely learn a lot from his class.
Don't let the reviews fool you. This is who you want to take for Mental Health if you actually want to gain knowledge. I am confident about MH proctor and MH questions in NCLEX because of my classroom experience with him. I also appreciate the smaller class size.
I don't understand why he gets a lot of hate, he's amazing. Tells you exactly what to study, easy power points to go through, test will have trick questions so beware. He does change his slides last minute so pay attention. Pharm is hard though so you will have to put the work in. Review sessions are quick but full of information
Save yourselves! Don't take his class if you want to keep your sanity! Lectures are boring since changes subject A LOT, and likes to talk about about irrelevant things! If you want to ask a question he'll be very vague with the answer. Doesn't grade assignments on time. If you have something personal going on he doesn't care about it.
Every mental health teacher is hard I have classmates that failed with the professors you might think are an easy A. it's really who you are as a student. Don't let the bad reviews sway your views of him. If you survived MedSurg & Pharm you'll survive MH with Prof Tan. He's great and super knowledgable. His tutoring sessions are super resourceful.
One of my favorite professors so far at West Coast. I was scared at first based off some of the negative reviews but I'm glad I got him as a professor!! He's really caring and puts time and effort into making sure the content is understood and relatable. Clear grading criteria and easy to get ahold of.
People say not to take him, but I disagree. If you get him for pharm then you wont regret it. A lot of people are passing his class. He's a great professor. He really teaches and is also funny. You'll put in work like any other classes but overall you'll be fine. He helps in any way he can.
I was very nervous going into pharm with Professor Tan because I heard that it was almost impossible to pass his class. Completely untrue. He is a great professor and although the material can be difficult to grasp, he gives you the tools to succeed. I would definitely take him again, even considering doing so for mental health.
I had him for 180 and he was amazing then so I took him again, very different how he teaches MH vs Pharm, tests are hard and full of trick questions, but when it came to the proctored and final we were prepared, its a very hard class
He's a great professor overall but he will make you earn your grade. You can tell that he loves teaching. His exams are decent but can be tricky and hard. You have to know informations outside the powerpoint which can be a little unfair when trying to figure out what correct informations to learn for the exams. Try learning from other students too.
You''ll be in class until the very end every time but he makes it doable, he is very passionate about mental health, his quizzes are difficult if you don't study but he goes over everything he puts on them and he cares about his students. Has funny jokes and makes class enjoyable. I really enjoyed his class. participate and you will enjoy it
DO NOT get Tan for Pharm! The bad reviews are 100% accurate. I had to drop his class because his quizzes were ridiculously challenging. He makes the wording extremely difficult and confusing. He does not care about the success of his students. It's just a job for him. Those who "do well" have some medical background.
Pay close attention to his lectures and PowerPoints. attending workshops is helpful but not really towards the tests. do the practice questions and really understand the logic behind the answers. His tests require a lot of critical thinking.
Professor Tan is hilarious during lectures. Lectures are no good. Very long, not detailed. Read, ATI, and go to tutoring. I attended another teacher's tutoring (Avagimians) to understand what was going on. Very strict with grading, even if it's the first week- he has no remorse. Doesn't finish the lecture. Tests on content were never presented.
Professor Tan is a great professor, his lectures are straight forward, and hes honestly really cool once he gets familiar with the class so don't be shy. However do not mess around, pay attention and read, read, read those slides. Focus on AE & SE for meds. His tests tend to be very difficult and you must use a lot of critical thinking. Good luck!!
Study his ppt slides and you'll be fine. His tests are tricky and hard, so you actually have to study. Some student don't like him because they don't want to be challenged. If you are willing to work hard for your grade and actually learn, take Professor Tan. If you want an easy A, look for an easy Professor.
Professor Tan will set you up for success. This professor is a WCU's gem. His lectures are golden because they are compelling and captivating. All teachers and professors can teach but not many are gifted like him at teaching. His quizzes are not easy who says nursing school is easy? As a nurse, you will be in charge of people's lives.
Tan was a great lecturer, I would 100% recommend him! Easy A, study for the quizzes by reviewing lectures and you'll be fine!
Solomon Tan is a god awful teacher. Don't even bother taking his class. Just take a gap year. Blud was not meant to teach.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Please do not bother taking him, his tests are not it.
Worse professor at WCU. If you get him, good luck! He's not a good professor, he never finishes his lectures as he goes off topic A LOT. But he still expects you to teach yourself the material for the quiz. I do not recommend him to anyone. Many ppl had to drop his class due to failing.
Professor makes the quizzes so hard ,his test and his material are totally different!would not recommend him at all .so many dropped
The worst professor in WCU history. Avoid him if you can.
Worst experience
The worst experience in my WCU history
There are better Mental health professors
Tan is mentally checked out. Not reachable outside of school. Tests are too confusing and not fully on lectures. Questions aren't understandable or marks answers incorrectly. Students drop the course. His arbitrary approach of lecturing/testing makes class stressful. Even with studying, it's likely you will be left with more questions than answers.
Worse Professor! He is not reachable after class, emails or reminds he never answers you. He grades without checking the homework properly. He marks stuff off when it was literally done and submitted on time, and he would mark them as missing. Do everything to avoid taking his class or changing your professor!!
Best WCU experience
I took tan because I heard that he wasn't as bad as the other profs. turns out he wasn't bad for pharm but i noticed he gets side tracked A LOT for mental health. Also his tests are pretty hard, and we would stay till 11pm yet he NEVER finished any of his lectures and they would always carry on to the next class. we are always behind :(
I took Professor Tan for mental health and he is more details. The questions are very difficult and confusing and there is not enough time to read the question, if you can avoid taking his classes, do so, otherwise you will waste time and money, but that is what it is. Good luck
This Professor is the worst he doesn't care about students . He makes his test difficult and Sets you up for failure . Avoid taking him.
If you're reading this you probably wondering if anyone wrote anything about how to pass the class: 1. Pay attention during lecture & write on your slides so everything is in one place when you study. 2. Cramming before the test DOESN'T work make time to study. 3. The ATI textbook helps a lot read it. 4. Use Pixorize videos.
Day 1 and we only covered maybe 15 slides. Were going to keep covering week 1 material on week 2... All the rumors are coming true. Some people call him good, but hes literally behind on lectures.. none of the others professors are covering week 1 on week 2.
If you got this professor, you were robbed of an education. Go to 1 Avagimian tutoring session and she will cover more then tan in his 3 hour lecture. You will cry at what you lost and can't get…
Tests aside, question difficulty aside, this professor DOES NOT FINISH LECTURES. He is NOT FINISHING THEM. Why does avagimians class get a full lecture and we get 10 slides? Please justify how those of you who rate 5/5 are okay with that? I suppose if you were a previous lvn in a mental health facility its easier for you. Congrats.
This professor, is bad. Difficult tests dont make a good professor. He thinks hes good but, he cant finish lectures. He thinks difficult tests make a man but, he just rants the whole class constantly. Day 1 he flexed his tenure (ability to not be fired) and acknowledged the rumors he has about him. Rip you, he robbed you of an education.
Anything red is true, anything green isn't. I just want to say that it says something when not only students but even other professors acknowledge how bad tan is. Don't believe be? Go assess and ask around. Don't even ask students ask his peers lol.
On a fundamental level, tan fails as a professor and cant finish lectures. I cant rate him a 5. I dont know why people give him high reviews when all he does is get sidetracked and rant half the class and ends it with "we will continue where we left off next week". He didnt even get through half his slides. Worst professor ive ever had lol.
-1 point for not finishing lectures, -1 point for not being ati based, -1 point for having awful slides, -1 point for being late to class, -1 more point for rumors. The score is now 0/5 but level 0 gets a 1/5 here.
Using the bioethical principle of veracity, I must report that Tan is patronizing, condescending, and arrogant. Past traumas have likely harmed him. It must be quite painful to be in his shoes; he may feel misunderstood or unseen. Unfortunately, he shores up his ego by defeating students with tests that are neither fair, clear, nor well-written.
His select all that applies are tricky, and their worth massive amounts of points. Sometimes questions, are not even covered in the lecture, the powerpoint, or the book. I guess it felt like common sense for him but, its kind of unfair to those of us who have no medical background. If he wants to ask them, at least make sure you cover it please.
Never thought mental health would be so confusing in this class but more clear in other classes. Enjoy learning about the anatomy of the brain in this class on top everything else you have to learn.
If you care for your own mental health, stay away from this man. He will confuse you more than teach you & he thinks our education level is the same as his. He's not ATI based and his tests aren't based off of his slides. Youre not gonna know what to study. Save yourself energy and money. By far the worst professor Ive had in the past year at WCU.
Professor Tan is extremely hard. His PowerPoints will not be useful for studying for the exams. His exam are extremely tricky and he enjoys that. I would definitely recommend getting a different professor because then maybe mental health would be enjoyable to study
The tests are ridiculously hard. Ok, but... why? Who does it benefit to create standards more difficult than any other class, more difficult than the proctored exams, and more difficult than the NCLEX? The only thing I can come up with is that it benefits the ego of the test giver. Demoralizing, and a deflated atmosphere in class as a result. Ugh.
Avoid at any cost! Test are soooo hard 1/2 of my class failed
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! By far the worst professor Ive had. Idk why he's still a professor here. He will set you up for failure. He purposely makes his tests hard. and ask for tutoring sessions. He failed to tell my class he does them until 1 week before the proctored exam. No respect at all for his students. Do urself a favor and avoid
Professor Tan runs a challenging but rewarding class. Lectures and PowerPoints are straightforward, but the exams require critical thinking. Unstuck ai helped me prep effectively.
No one should take his class, doesn't care about students .
Prof Tan is such a knowledgeable instructor. His class is DOABLE. You need to put in time w studying, ITS NURSING SCHOOL. When taking his tests, I recognized everything from his lecture. You need to pay attention & take very good notes on what he is lecturing. I focused on his lecture, slides, and attended his tutoring sessions. I have an A in MH!
Preparing to graduate June 2025 and I had to come back to say something. Let me tell you, nobody knows pharm because candance didn't teach & sabba gave you the answers. It's embarrassing, honestly. Professor Tan is the only reason why myself and very few students understand pharm. consider yourself lucky if you get him as a professor! READ! STUDY!
He is the best professor at this school. He is the most knowledgeable. His slides are on the test. He is hilarious and can make a 5-hour lecture fly by, which is insane. I was scared of his rating my professor at first, and he is completely different from how he is described here. People must write this stuff because his tests can be difficult.
Honestly, I was so scared of his ratings. He is SUCH an amazing teacher! I am not a crazy smart person. He is straight forward and makes his lectures entertaining. If you listen and go over his slides, you can definitely pass. He is challenging on his test, yes, but it's cool to compare how much more his class knows compared to others
I am already working as an RN for 3 years. He is the most memorable professor I've had from West Coast because he puts his heart and soul in his lectures. The high caliber of this professor stood out to me. Everybody can get a job s a prof but not many is gifted at teaching. I missed the med math schedule and he went above and beyond to help me.
Professor Tan is an amazing instructor and I wish he would teach more classes at WCU. I learned a lot and the learning environment was the best I have experienced at this university, and the most hilarious! He is lecture heavy but the exams are based on what is being lectured and he provides guidance. Bad ratings aren't "mathing"!
Professor Tan doesn't deserve any of the bad reviews. He's truly an amazing educator and cares for his students. If he taught other nursing core classes, I would def pick him again!!! He's the best!
Professor Tan is disorganized, ignores messages, and posts grades only at the end. His exams are unfair and confusing, leaving students lost. I studied endlessly, sacrificed other classes, and still failed by 0.5%. I shed so many tears; this class was draining, discouraging, and truly traumatic.
Either you love him or you hate him. I hated him. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs; over half the class failed
Great professor, great lectures and slides. His tests are difficult BUT he prepares you well. Pay attention to SLIDES!! Class in general is hard, but he prepares you, you gotta put in effort can't just slide by with last min studying.
Professor Tan is an outstanding instructor. His lectures and slides are all you need to succeed. The exams are challenging and require a significant amount of time and effort to prepare for, but the learning experience makes it completely worthwhile. I recommend him, especially if you truly want to learn pharmacology.
Professor Tan has a bad rep but honestly, I think those reviews are from the students that are expecting an easy A. I've taken Professor Tan twice, Mental Health and Pharmacology, and he truly wants his students to know the material. He's actually pretty hilarious and makes his lectures fun and interesting. Highly recommend!
Do not take this professor. There's a reason why the class was so empty! His test are unnecessarily hard! He doesn't care about his students, he's not a kind grader and he won't help his students out.
