If you do not take notes or read every line of the book, you will fail the take. The first day of class, she said, "I will not curve my exams, I do not have powerpoint slides, and everything in the book and what I say is fair game on the exam." She also does not give study guides; yet, she gives minimal guided notes for class material.
Interesting material covered in the class. It isn't too hard if you read the book and take notes for each of the chapters. Highly recommend attending class, even though attendance isn't mandatory. The wording on tests are a bit different from what most classes are like, so it may take an exam to get a vibe for what to expect
Prof. Chyz was nice enough and a good teacher. Get ready to read lots--the material was pretty dry (it's law after all) and each exam is worth 20 percent of your grade. Just read the chapters several times and pay attention in lecture.
I had heard Somer was extremely tough, but she's really a great professor. The class isn't all that interesting unless you love law, but she makes it very bearable. I would definitely recommend taking her.
She's a really great professor. This class is tough because it's only graded by four tests. However, she made learning about law interesting. I outlined the chapters and did decent on the tests. She's funny and very personable. Definitely take her!
Great professor. Funny and knowledgeable. Four exams are the only grades, which can be a blessing or a curse. I did really well on the first and last, but the second was awful and the third was hard. But, we had a sub who sucked for those two exams, because Mrs. Chyz was on maternity leave. For an A, take notes from the textbook, not just lectures.
Ms. Chyz is a great professor. She is very entertaining and brings current news into the lecture. There are only 4 exams so for an A you need to read the chapters before the lectures. She did not take attendance but it would be difficult to do well on the exams without going to the lectures.
This is not an easy class but I have come to enjoy her lectures. I was put off at first because she refuses to use powerpoints and just yells at the class during lecture. But she makes business law about as interesting as it could be and uses good real -world examples. Definitely a hard class but the grading scale makes up for it.
Try to find a good study guide, its not graded on how u think but retain random infor
No, she doesn't have ppts or study guides, but lectures are great. She speaks clearly and organizes lectures in a way that makes it easy to take notes. You must read the book. There are only 4 tests and as long as you truly work for it (go to class and read the chapters) you can easily get an A.
Not a hard class if you actually read/study the book chapters. I stopped going to lecture after the first exam (except review sessions) and I made an A. Somer is great and funny. She is really willing to help students outside of class!
Professor Chyz is great! The tests are completely fair based on the material covered in class and in her reviews before the exams. This course is known to be hard; however, I believe that it is actually pretty easy to do well. The key to passing this course is just simply attending class and studying your notes.
Professor Chyz was great! She made class interesting and was clear about the material we were expected to know. Gave good explanations to help us understand. Attendance is not mandatory, but being there for lectures made the tests easier.
She makes talking about the law fun and interesting, she gives good examples that make difficult laws simple to understand. Attendance is not mandatory but if you go to class there is no reason to not get an A.
Somer Chyz is the queen. She is brilliant, eloquent, and full of sass. Attendance isn't mandatory but I found myself wanting to attend because of her ability to engage. She does not use powerpoints when lecturing, but speaks clearly and organizes her lectures in such a way that facilitates note taking. Textbook use is a necessity to do well.
There are only 4 grades (4 exams). Read the book or come to class. Shes really interesting, I enjoyed her lectures.
This class gets a bad rep but it's very interesting if you pay attention. Dr. Chyz is amazing at relaying the information in a way you'll understand & is great about relating it to the real world. Doesn't do power points so go to class to take notes. Doesn't take attendance. Exams aren't too difficult if you study. Loved this class and Dr. Chyz!
4 exams are your only grades. However, they are relatively easy as long as you go to class. Everything on her exams comes from her lectures.
Alright, you have nothing graded but tests. The class is very hard, her study guides are absolutely not a fair representation of the test. Anything she could have whispered under her breath is fair game for the final. I figured all of this out after bombing the first test, so go to class, even though it's not mandatory, skipping is a trap in BULW.
I loved Somer as a professor. I loved her lectures even though sometimes I didn't want to go. Attendance is not mandatory, but I would definitely recommend going. I went to class, listened, and took detailed notes. I read the book once, and never looked at it again. I only looked over the notes a couple days before each exam and did very well.
Good knowledgeable professor with an easy to understand grading criteria. Tests are fairly easy and review provides a lot of information.
Great professor, clearly knows what she is talking about. Get over your test anxiety because the only grades in this class are from exams.
All around, one of the best professors I've had.
Chyz was a great professor and very smart. However her class was unbelievably hard. She doesn't have powerpoints so you have to attend lectures because the tests are from her lectures. Her tests are also usually impossible to pass. I'm a straight A and B student and I could not get a good grade in her tests no matter how much I studied.
Dr. Chyz is extremely knowledgeable, and I actually enjoyed her lectures way more than I thought I would. She does not take any form of attendance, but I highly doubt people who skipped regularly did well in the class. Her final exam had many questions taken straight from her lectures. Overall, I enjoyed her class.
If you are not an auditory learner I do not recommend taking Chyz. She has zero PowerPoints so all she does is talk. She explains the basics of the content in her lectures but her tests are unbelievably hard.
Somer is great, very intriguing and makes Business Law very interesting, I enjoyed having her. Make sure to take notes and stay tuned in during class and you will be fine for the tests.
Class was awesome. Just make sure you do not skip.
Professor Chyz's class is HEAVY on lectures. I recommend that you take notes AND record the lecture audio. The book is also a must have. The only material that gets graded are the tests, and this semester there were 4 exams. The final is not cumulative. Solid professor, but she is extremely rude to students. (If you read this fix your attitude) :)
Somer is a great teacher but this class is overwhelmingly difficult. I know of so many people who are borderline with passing this class even though they take 20+ pages of notes per exam and study for hours upon hours. I heard in previous semesters it was not as bad, but Somer made this semester increasingly challenging. Interesting material though
This is a very difficult course. your grade solely depends on 4 exams and that's it. All she does is lecture there are no homework assignments or quizzes. Her lectures can get very boring and she does not use PowerPoint or post on canvas the pieces of paper she shows on the projector. She is a very intimidating teacher.
She really knows what she's talking about and makes the class interesting. That being said - the only grades are four exams which you definitely have to study for. She lectures the entire class without a PowerPoint, but it's honestly not bad. Go to class and study and you should be fine. Intimidating class, but definitely do-able.
The concepts are quite straightforward and she goes over examples more than enough (e.g. she'll teach one or two things per class and drill you with a story/example). My biggest annoyance with this class is her lack of email etiquette. She will SPAM YOU WITH EMAILS.
A lot of people are hard on professor Chyz because she teaches a class that everyone must take... so people approach it with a bad, lazy attitude. I have made A's on the first two exams, and have two more exams to go. those are the only grades in the class besides a syllabus agreement. Read the textbook before class and study for exams, youre gold
It is a tough class and there are not a ton of grades in the class but Professor Chyz is a good professor. Pay attention to her lectures and take really good notes.
The professor is obviously super liberal and talks on the topic in only ways she agrees with. Brought up the fake corporate constitution on day 1 of the class and completely avoiding the act of 1871. Only if a college professor knew about that it would interest me in the class more.
I mean this is just ridiculous, the way she words her tests are awful. She has actually changed her tests up from previous years making them much harder now that everything is on zoom. If youre reading this Chyz please just stop teaching and focus on being a lawyer cause youre not cut out for teaching.
You are graded on very few things and the class is 100% about reading comprehension and 100% not about law.
Avoid at all costs if possible! Tests are awful and she's not understanding at all.
Professor Chyz takes her job very seriously. She used to be a lawyer, and treats her classroom like a courtroom. I spent 20+ hours studying for each exam only to make 80s on them. Exam questions are very wordy for no reason. You only need a 50 to pass this class which says a lot about how so many students have done bad in the class.
Do not take Professor Chyz. She is not understanding at all and makes her tests hard for no reason. You only have 4 exams that are your grades. Avoid her at all costs. Worst professor Ive had.
Easily the worst class I had to take out of my college career. I would dive head first into a pool of barbed-wire before I took this class again.
Most students are way too harsh with Chyz. She's a VERY good lecturer and gives great examples. You have to pay attention because the stuff she says 3 times is usually what you should be writing down. Being completely graded by tests isn't great, but if you study well, they shouldn't be a problem. She's also super helpful if you have questions.
Literally got a 49% in the class and can't even round it 1 more point. After finishing exam she takes weeks to grade and have to schedule office hours to see what our exam results. Cant even learn if she hides our exam results.
One of the best teachers I've had. Test heavy, so you need to go to class and read some of the textbook, but if you do that there's no reason you shouldn't well. Her tests are not meant to trick you and if you know the material you'll do well. If you're struggling she is more than happy to meet with you and/or sends clear and helpful emails.
Overall not a bad professor, but the material in my opinion is hard. Class is entirely based off of 4 exams, so be prepared to not do a lot of (any) work for this class but spend that time studying. The exams are somewhat difficult so read the textbook. If I were taking this class again I would have a much different approach.
One of my favorite classes I have taken here. The class does only have 4 exams, but if you go to class and read the textbook it is really easy to do well on them. The way she teaches made me retain the information so well.
I took this class online and it was difficult to follow. She does not use slides she just lectures the whole time, and you just have to guess what to write down. It takes a while to get your exam grades back, but it does not even show which ones you got wrong. Then if you want to go over your exam you have to schedule a meeting with her.
Chyz is amazing. BULW is by far my favorite course I have taken yet. She is so well spoken and her lectures are so interesting to listen to. The exams are difficult, but if you pay attention in class and take notes you should be fine.
The worst class I have ever taken at UT even as a finance student because of the grading criteria and how it is lecture heavy. It is impossible to make an A in this class. The professor is nice and gives good lectures (but have no slides or notes), but the exams are made to be tricky on purpose. On the bright side, she is nice and knowledgeable.
The material covered in lecture is interesting, and lectures aren't boring either. Chyz does a great job relating topics to real world examples. Take GOOD notes and attend class, or you will fail. Tests are tricky. Learn how to apply the material, not just memorize definitions. The test questions and answer choices are meant to trip you up.
Professor Chyz is so knowledgeable and gives you all the resource needed to succeed. It's a tough class since you're graded only on 4 exams, but you can definitely succeed. Ask her for help if you need it!
Worst prof I've had at UTK. She goes on long tangents/side stories during class, and her exams are impossible to do good on. Only graded on exams, which are extremely wordy. Good news is you only need a 50% to pass.
I know her class has a bad rep because it is hard, but she is so knowledgeable and one of my favorite professors ever. The examples she gives in class helped me learn the material so much. Test heavy but they are not impossible, she makes this class as fun as it could be. Overall this class is hard but she makes it really interesting.
She is such a good teacher- explains things well and makes it interesting. She does take attendance, it doesn't affect your grade, but go to class because she says things that are important and helpful for tests. Reading the textbook is the only homework but I never did and my friends didn't either and we were fine. Study in advance for exams!
Prof. Chyz is a great professor. Her use of stories helped put complicated legal concepts into context. Make sure you go to class/watch lectures as that's where she gets most of her test content from. Lost of exam questions are pulled directly from what she says in class. Take notes on the book and write down everything she says in class.
While this class gets a bad rep, I absolutely loved professor Chyz and this class. There are no homework assignment, just readings, and if you do the readings before class you are set to succeed. Her lectures are very thorough, and she gives great examples. If you stay attentive in class and do the readings, you will be successful in this class.
This has been one of my favorite classes. She's a great teacher and explains things in a way that make sense and are easy to comprehend. I never read a single page out of the assigned readings and only took notes on what she talked about in class and I never had an difficulty with exams. Just look over your notes before exams and you will do fine.
She is by far the best lecturer and professor I've had at Tennessee. This class gets a bad rap, but getting an A is not impossible. Attend ALL lectures, record and relisten to lectures before exam time, do the reading, and watch her exam review question explanations. It's a lot of work, but your result will match your effort.
Honestly I would have liked to take this class in person cause it was very lecture and reading heavy and those online zoom lectures where very un engaging. From what I can tell she seems really nice and genuine, I will say if your reading comprehension isn't great like mine this class gets difficult.
Professor Chyz was a decent professor, I just think the material was pretty difficult to understand. There are only four exams and you have to read every chapter in order to pass.
Biggest advice would be to take the in person section if you can; her lectures are very engaging, but much harder to pay attention online since no slides. Go slow on the tests and make a mind map to organize your thoughts/ the elements, DON'T OVERTHINK IT! Use her reviews and watch her videos of her explaining the answers to learn how she thinks.
READ THE BOOK! Take notes from the ch. she gives you to read. If you don't, you'll be lost in class. Learn the material from the book. During class, she adds on to it and provides great examples that you should remember for the exam. Don't overthink! Read the questions carefully. She makes the answer pretty obvious if you learned the material.
Business law is not an easy class! You have to go to class, take good notes, and read the textbook OR you will not do well on the four exams. But Professor Chyz is there willing to help - she even replies to emails on weekends. She really cares about you and she wants you to apply the knowledge you learned in class.
Although I never read the textbook, I was still able to get an A in this class through just taking good notes and engaging in the lectures. Her exams are essentially reading comprehension tests which you can prepare for through paying attending in lectures.
Horrible lecturer, her lecture content has no relation to the exams. The whole grade for the class is based on 3 exams. Read the textbook to study for the exams!
This class is difficult. Lowest grade I have gotten in a college course and I went to every lecture, read every page in the textbook, and studied. It is hard to get a good grade in this class because the ONLY grades are the exams... Professor Chyz is very knowledgeable and easy to access through email. I only wish that I didn't take it online.
She is a really great professor the class is just difficult. Her lectures are useful, and the textbook readings help a lot. She gives great examples of scenarios and is willing to answer all questions and go over exams with you. What sucks is that the only grades are the 4 exams.
I thought she was very fair. Your whole grade is based on four exams. During her lectures, she does not use slideshows which can sometimes be a little hard to catch everything when she is talking. There is lots of reading!!!! Be ready to read a lot! There are no clickers, she will post her lecture on canvas for two days, so watch it quick!
This class is tough at no fault of Professor Chyz; law is just a difficult concept. If you read the textbook, watch all lectures, and attend exam review sessions, you will without a doubt see your grade improve. Chyz is extremely knowledgeable about law and knows what she is talking about, and is always there to help when needed. I give her an A+.
This class has a reputation of being difficult but I disagree. Everyone who says this class is extremely hard are the people who don't go to the lectures and try to cram the exam. The material is a bit challenging bit if you pay attention and take notes, you'd end the class with a solid B. The professor is extremely caring.
It is a daunting class but she is such an amazing teacher and helps explains concepts so well. She also allows online students to have a chance to move to the in-person section. Going to class and reading the textbook are super important to your success. What you put in is what you get out of it. She is amazing, totally take her if you can!
This was the first semester of her new weekly quiz format and it was pretty easy. The only grades are weekly, noncumulative quizzes taken straight from the lecture. Lectures were educational, and made so a business student could understand. I really enjoyed this class.
I believe the format of this class has changed a lot since previous semesters. The only assignment is a weekly quiz that's like 7-9 questions. If you attend class and pay attention, the quizzes aren't too bad. Chyz is a great lecturer and really commands the room, plus she's very nice. Don't be afraid to take this class!
Dr. Chyz gives interesting and practical lectures. The format has changed for this class recently; now, there are weekly quizzes, and this makes up the entirety of your grade. These quizzes are very reasonable and easy as long as you pay attention in class and take some notes.
Such an amazing professor and lecturer. Everything is based on weekly quizzes that are open note; if you miss a deadline, she reopens everything at the end. Her lectures are fun to listen to and she has the best outfits, highly recommend.
She's amazing! I loved her class. Her exams are just like the lectures and she makes it fun and interesting. I almost pursued law school because of her.
I took Dr. Chyz's BLW 301 during the summer. The course was primarily graded based on quizzes, which she posted approximately every other day. These quizzes were directly connected to the videos she provided. The course structure was straightforward. I would definitely recommend taking this class during the summer.
All you do is take 1 quiz a week for the whole semester. I did the zoom online class and attendance wasn't mandatory but it helped with the quizzes. Definitely recommend taking with this professor.
Professor Chyz was AWESOME! She is clearly knowledgeable, and her lectures are excellent. She doesn't use PowerPoints, so be prepared to take notes. Open note and book quizzes once a week. Would recommend!
Professor Chyz is so engaging, and is a great resource to learn this material from. She truly cares for her students and gives many real-life examples for you to really understand and grasp the material. There were no exams, but weekly quizzes that were open-book and open-note. She really wants her students to learn the material and is so kind.
Professor Chyz made Intro to Business Law engaging. As boring as law can be, she makes it very engaging with stories, cases, etc. She is also very lenient on due dates. 10/10 would recommend!
I did not know what to expect when registering for Professor Chyz class, however I am pleased to say that not only did the ratings not do her justice, but she exceeded the expectations. She lectured in a way that genuinely made me interested in the topics we were learning, and I went in with the idea that the law was boring. Great professor!
I loved this class. I was nervous at first, but the new format makes it more enjoyable. The only assignments are weekly open-note quizzes that directly reflect the lectures, so good notes matter. I took it online, but I'd probably recommend taking it in person if you can to help stay accountable and focused.
