The fact that he teaches First Year Engineering (J-Section) is a curse for us
had him when he started teaching. i hear he's mellowed. j = bad!

THere is no regulation as to how hard we can make the exam He told us this
No Comments
He doesn't seem to enjoy what he does. He's a physicist, not a teacher
No Comments
You have to admit he's funny.
He enjoys failing people by giving marks like 47% 48% killer inclass quizzes 112
Slow it down a bit, and chill on the quizzes
He get's a bit, excitied, from time to time
slow down.....
pray your stars that you dont get somi for J-Section, he's even worse/harder n J
genius, awsome teacher
This guy is an eccentric nut - but good teacher
Great Professor.
makes funny jokes, marks hard, ok
I tell the jokes, when you have two Phds you can tell the jokes
Good, but difficult
nice guy but tough
Great prof, really gets the concepts across, eccentric
A very nice and helpful man; but loves to fail students! marks way too hard
By previous stats, he fails the most students than any other 1st Year Eng prof
Great Prof!!!! IS a hard marker, but very helpful, and interested in his work!!!
What's the point of trying to act like a very HELPFUL Guy when you mark incredibly hard and you like to see students fail? What did we ever do? Why do you like to punish us? Please try to be fair with us, and no - you are not funny at all. Thi
fairly good prof, very hard final
GET A LIFE!!! DO YOU GET PAID MORE FOR GIVING BRUTAL EXAMS?
He likes to make students feel stupid. We study so hard, and he makes the exam very hard, to show that we are stupid. I can't concentrate on learning with this man anymore, because I know he's going to fail us anyways no matter how hard we study
Very difficult professor. Toughest among all Physics profs who teach 1st Year. I find his lectures confusing sometimes
Really smart man knows his stuff i was in his class for 111, 111j, and 112j and i know from personal experience he isn't the reason people fail that course. he's a good guy and does his best to help you if you put in the effort.
For the love of god, PLEASE stop making those jokes. Your Jokes are NOT FUNNY at all.As a matter of fact they are very lame and it's not very amusing when you nail us so brutally and mercilessly on the final exam. This is serious stuff

Not bad...doesn't really teach well but it's a blast to watch him go insane while lecturing. If you don't go through a few old exams to study for the final you'll be lucky to get a 60.
Very good professor. Extremely difficult, quizzes and final exams. Students in his classes must work really hard, but he is willing to answer questions, and does a lot of examples. I have learned so much from his classes.
Very helpful friendly teacher. Good lectures. Very goood notes
He normally makes the first in class quiz the hardest to give everyone a wake up call and makes later on quizzes easier than the first one. His classes are fun
Tough but fair. If you do the work you will do well. Go to the lectures
The guy seems nice initially, but he is so damn hard. Be very careful, he has no mercy when it comes to marks (he makes the toughest quizzes, his TA's mark them). He does try to be really funny and is quite entertaining. He's an okay person though..
Good guy but terribly hard. Very approachable if you go to his office for help and he is very helpful during tutorials. It's not easy to get high marks with him
Among the 3 profs teaching APSC111 right now, Narayanan's quizzes would be the tougest. Guaranteed! Do whatever you can (study 111 more), but *DONOT* fail APSC 111 under any circumstances since this guy teaches 111J and he is much tougher in 111J/112J
seems funny at first. insane later on. knows what he's talking about but is hard to understand. entertaining to watch him go nuts.
Quizzes, Evening Quizzes, and Exams were like having your arm cut off by a cold rusty spoon.
Somi failed me in PHYS114 few years back which caused me to do a 5th year Engineering [VICTORY LAP] If you fail this class, you will not be allowed to take 3 important courses in second year Mechanical and that automatically makes it a 5 year program.
Has a strong reputation, but not to me really. I don't really understand much from him... Not sure if it's the material or him that discourages me... though I did do very well in the midtermbut i studied mainly alone... I guess he's okay!
best prof ever
He is the ****!!!
Funny but not always clear
Somi is a pretty damn good teacher in my opinion.
I think he is better than the other physics professors teaching this semester. He is knowledgable and helpful. I've heard from people he is tough in APSC 112, but I find APSC 111 pretty easy since I think it is mostly review from high school physics.
Somi's great, he knows his **** and expains it, he tells you what not to wory about and what matters. Plus he's funny as he teaches, the idioms keep you guessing and interested in the class. He's around outside of class too if you need to ask questions.
AWESOME!!
Somi rocks! Teaches at an extremely quick pace and is to-the-point. Excellent prof!
Somi is the best. Funniest prof ever!
He is pretty funny and is not that hard to understand even though he has an accent
Excellent proff
Explains fairly well and is willing to answer questions if you don't get something, but difficult exams.
Once you can understand him, he's great
Really good Prof. Love his enthusiasium(i think thats spelled right, i am eng after all) and he's quite helpful. Stays after class to answer questions. Keep up the good work!
He's HILLARIOUS!

Dr.Naraynan is awesome but he likes giving difficult quizzes. Final exam was fair for me and it increased my mark. I hope he teaches me APSC 112 next semester
Very Helpful prof. Extremely helpful in the tutorials and very nice if you go see him outside of class time for any questions or problems you have. Maybe he should be a little less difficult than he would be even better
This professor's J-Section final exam is very difficult. You have been warned. A lot of people find it WAY more difficult than the original exam in December. As a matter of fact, many student's marks get LOWERED the second time around. Better watch out.
He almost ruined my interest in Physics. Had him for APSC 111 few years ago. My deepest condolences for anyone who has the misfortune of being in his class. He keeps you awake but is very hard to understand. Dr.Fletcher (for 112) was much better!!!
Hilarious! If you want to laugh for most of 1st yr physics, he's the prof. If you want to pass, choose another. His quizzes and exams are hard but his hilarious oddities make up for bad lectures.
He's an okay person but I found his lectures to be incredibly unclear. He is incredibly smart and knows his stuff well but I found that most of the time he is just copying notes on the blackboard. Professor Johnstone does more clear examples I hear
Many years ago I emailed him asking if the J-Section final exams are at the same level of difficulty as the regular exams. He replied saying they are supposed to be at the same level but 'We the instructors can't always guarantee that. We do try though'
My advice to students: SWITCH OUT OF HIS SECTION IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. HIS LECTURES ARE UNCLEAR, IN CLASS QUIZZES ARE EXTREMELY TOUGH(PARTICULARLY THE FIRST ONE) TAKE JOHNSTONE OR ANYONE ELSE BY CHECKING IN QCARD IF SPACE IS THERE IN OTHER SECTION
He's the best. Better than all the other profs. If you have Johnstone, don't even bother going to his class, he just copies examples from the book and mumbles to himself. Somi is clear, makes awesome notes and is really nice and helpful.
I think he is a nice guy. He means well, but unintentionally some of his quizzes are difficult. His lectures are OK, he's always willing to answer questions if you don't understand something. He's definitely a demanding prof and expects hard work.
Perhaps the worst prof I've ever had. Completely unorganized and incapable of communicating clearly. Seems like a nice guy, but an incompetent teacher.
Somi is awsome
vERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HIM.
Very funny professor, but loves giving difficult quizzes and difficult exams. I wonder how many students he has failed during the time he has taught at Queen's. Must be more than 1000 for sure. Very Hard course, he makes it a lot tougher.
I found this prof to be very useless, he has an accent and is very difficult to understand during lecture. Also, I failed his class and ended up losing my scholarship.
Very intelligent and very helpful prof. Probably the best of the 3 physics profs who taught us APSC111 in first semester. Keeps the lectures interesting and is always enthusiastic in teaching. I wish I had him for APSC 112 as well!!!
Prof. Narayanan is so nice. He was my prof in 1998/1999 and he was the toughest professor of J-Section. The J-Section chemistry and math prof were really easy, but our physics exam was the toughest.
Excellent prof
PHYSICS is not supposed to be as hard as this guy makes it. He knows his stuff but does NOT really know HOW to teach that stuff. EXAMS are hard, lectures are not very helpful at all. WHY do profs INTENTIONALLY make our lives tenfold harder than need be&#
Horrible prof. Useless lectures. Hard marker. A total hypocrite. Tries extra hard to be funny with his lame jokes, but destroys you badly on quizzes, evening quizzes, and final exam. 52 class average for the APSC 111J final exam! Shame on you somi!
somi is the man. if you listen, he explains everything twice. no harder than the other profs for this course. people that fail somi's class would have failed the other profs classes too, so pay no attention
I Can't believe the negative comments. He's not out to fail u.Talk to him and he will be more than willing to help, offered many make up quizzes in both J classes. If you want to do well he will give you the resources, good online notes.Very dedicated teacher
Excellent teacher. Superior to other professors teaching this course. Course notes are good and he is more than willing to help you outside of class. He will never laugh at your questions will clairfy all questions.
I loved this prof! I found his teaching clear and his 5:00 funnies amusing. I even went to him when I had a crappy prof for 112, and he helped me out!
Somi is my homie
He's tough
Best Physics prof in first year engineering
Entertaining teacher who keeps your attention. He helped me out of Stirling when i was lost!
I know some people hate his explanations, but I find his lectures to be very good. His quizes were probably the easiest in APSC 111, too. His notes are good, but sadly hand written.

Great professor! Really funny, cheerful, and likes to help students.
this course was so easy coz i did all the stuff in high school. he's very helpful if u go to him in office hours etc and he always answers emails.
Awesome prof who really cared about his students. Always there for extra help and just a generally really nice man. One of my favourite profs in first year eng.
Great guy
Breathtaking
Great Prof, sometimes a little bit hard to follow but knows his stuff and is a good teacher.
fabulous. best physics prof yet.
Very good prof. 112 with Dr. J does not come close.
Dr. Narayanan is hands down the best prof I've had at Queen's. He's professional, approachable and has a great sense of humour. His Friday class jokes are a great way to end a week of classes. And if he's reading this: Try not to take punk kids talking during class too personally...
An overall great prof, but teaches a bit fast sometimes.
Dr. Narayanan's the best proffessor by far. Once you get comfortbale with the accent - everything starts making sense. He is great at explainning conceps and is always willing to crack a joke. 2 Thumbs up.
Excellent prof. 112 with Johnstone cannot compare.
Nice prof. Exams are tough.

He's funny!!!
This is an excellent teacher who was a spectacular change from Professor Johnstone. He makes excellent blackboard notes, and explains problem solving steps for all different types of questions. He is readily available outside class, and strives to make sure that all students learn the material during tutorials.
I am glad he is teaching at queens. I had him years ago foe thermo and I enjoyed his class.
Excellent Proff and a nice guy. Good sence of humor mixed with the ability to keep learning fast paced and interesting. Helpfull and very friendly at all times.
I actually felt like I was learning something when I went to class. Tries very hard to make the material understandable. His notes are worth their weight in gold.
This was a tough course, but he couldn't have presented the material more clearly. He is always prepared; has really good blackboard notes; made lectures very interesting; has a great sense of humour.
What a funny guy. I love his jokes and one-liners, as well as the way he teaches. He adds a nice spice to physics that makes it worth going to
His accent puts me off to sleep
Somi's a good guy, gets the point accross. Can be a little confusing at times
awesome
He is better than Johnstone!
beauty
Doctor Somi did showed genuine care for his students. HE made class interesting and fun as well as serious.
He's good
Somi can draw circles like some sort of machine designed to draw really good circles, but better and faster than that machine could ever hope to be. Assuming that the machine is self-aware and can feel hope for circular illustration ability.
Amazin professor. Very nice and helpful inside and outside of class. See him in office hour and he is happy to provide help. Lectures little fast paced sometime but you can see him after class if you don't understand. Great prof.
DR. SOMI!! He is so cool. One of these days he will catch that chalk when he throws it up in the air.. and it will be awesome.
For sure a great professor , he like physics which makes him related topics to each other more than many other teachers. His help during the office hours are great even I annoy him much . The notation are little bit confusing but he gives you the freedom to choose what you like to use as notations. His jokes are so funny and cool. i enjoy his calss
You only wish you could draw circles like this man
Krazy Eyez!!
A good guy; but very difficult prof. His Exams are usually very hard.
Hilarious prof. Demos are great and fudging them is even better. Oh Somi how i love your classes..
Somi wields his arm like a radius. He's a fantastic prof that proves everything. Which I like. Great sense of humour
Many years ago, about 9 years back, he used to fail a lot of students in the J-Section exam. The J-Section exam average used to be in the low 50's but the original december exam class average was in the mid 60's. To be honest, I hated this prof
Great prof. I like his honesty and his great sense of humour. He proves most of the theorems used and has a very intuitive sense of the subject. Well done!!
Very nice professor, gives help hints and solutions. However, his notes were a little shabby and sometimes unclear. But for his first time teaching that course, he did very well.
Useless Prof. His exams are really hard. Good Luck and Best Wishes if you have this professor. Queen's Engineering is worthless.
I saw him at the Kingston strip club the other day. He walked in with a paper bag over his face because he is ashamed of that ugly face of his, but my buddies and I knew it was him. When we approached him he ran out of the club and slipped on some ice. Now he has a big bruise on his Ass. Serves him right.
This prof is the best...he puts very clear lecture notes on the internet which save you a world of grief if you are in the section of a crappy prof...Somi is Very Good!!
He is a terrible prof. The J-section class average was in the low 50's back in 2000. The original exam class average used to be around 65-67% but he made the J section exam much harder. It is really shameful. So many people's marks went down after the J-sectione exam
MOST AMAZING TEACHER IN THE WOORRLLD! LOVE YOU SOMI!
He is awesome
He likes to jump around a lot
Somi is an excellent teacher! Sure he likes to move around a lot be he shows how excited he is about teaching his class and he shows great concern for students, constantly asking them if they need any help as well as reminding them that he is always available.
Very energetic, an excellent teacher with great lectures and notes. Buying the textbook is a waste, never used and online notes and problems work just fine. Still a tough course.
Great Prof!
Awesome dude, a whole other animal. Everyone loved him in our year
BEST physics professor at Queen's University. Takes the time to make sure his class understands the material and presents the information well. Online notes aren't the greatest so make sure to attend classes and then look at Noble's notes after.
Such a nice person. He really cares about everyone and is very helpful.
Dr. Somi you are the best. Very quirky, always a lark. The way he does physics is great. If you learn to do it his way you will be successful. He's helpful like you read about.
A decent prof who is a master at what he teaches. Exams and quizzes are a bit tough however his pronunciation of angle theta as "TETA" and occasional sideways head turns make up for it. He gives the students the benefit of the doubt when it comes to grading. For example, will make a bad quiz worth less. All in all an amazing professor!!
He is a great prof! He can make anyone understand. He is always willing to help. Also his jokes are hilarious.
Terrible professor, spends entire lecture only going through examples. Even so, his chalkboard organization is terrible. He makes the final J section exam much much harder than the normal course. He even told us that 'I'm no nice guy, the final will be much harder'. Doesn't seem to properly go over theory. He may be funny, yes..but bad at teaching.
Great prof, always willing to help you out if u go to office hours. Exams are hard, but his weekly puns make up for that, overall great prof
Seems like a nice guy, people tend to overlook his terrible ability to teach because of the occasional jokes he drops during lectures. Most lectures are dull and uninformative. His tests and quizzes are most of the time just not fair.
excellent professor!
His lectures and course is structured rlly badly. He's personally a decent guy, his jokes are good but teaching wise...GET ME SOMEONE ELSE!
:/ if you can switch profs i would.
He's actually a good prof. I don't know why people are so bitter, physics is a hard subject don't expect to put in no work and do well. Somi is enthusiastic during lectures, and has an open door policy meaning you can to his office when ever he is there for help. Also you can email him with any questions you have and he'll help!
He genuinely really cares about students, I saw him for extra help quite a bit during the semester and he was always helpful. Go to his review session before the final! Dont rely just on class to teach the material, I realized in the second half of the semester I needed to use the textbook and online resources along with extra help.
Don't confuse 'funny' with 'good'. I sure didn't.
He is a pretty good prof, cares for his students if you put in the effort and can keep your attention. His derivations do become messy and his board use is atrocious. His messiness was much more apparent in 112 rather than 111. Can get pretty mad, sort of randomly, did more than once in 111, and 112.
If you're worried about struggling in this course see him for extra help! He is extremely clear and caring one-on-one and helped me throughout the semester.
Terrible at explaining things and not very helpful but luckily the class was just 206 repeated. Wouldn't recommend for classes that are actually hard.
Professor Somi really cares about his students. He was always there whenever I needed help, and never once judged me if I didn't understand a topic. Goes a bit fast in lectures, so make sure you do pay attention. If you do miss anything, he's always available during office hours. Amazing prof, really made me like 112.
Definitely my favourite prof. He was always available for help if needed and liked to make class fun with demos and jokes.
After struggling and being confused for weeks with another prof, I had Somi for J. He was fantastic, constantly showing many examples and helping us through learning catalytics! I wish I would have gone to his lectures in the beginning because of how much of a difference he made. I have nothing but great things to say about him.
He gives jokes every week in class
Somi is an absolute gem. He is reliable, always available outside of class to talk to/get extra help from. He is very approachable, and non-judgemental. His exams are a little tough, but fair, and very manageable if you put the work in. One of my favourite profs.
He teaches very quickly and can sometimes be difficult to follow, but he genuinely cares about students success and will gladly slow down to explain a concept if asked.
Somi has a significant clear step by step on board explanation on sample questions and principles. Overall excellent prof. Indian accent may hard to understand but not bad.
Fun&great guy don't get me wrong but he writes way too fast and I feel like he solves the problems for himself and not for us. So we leave class just as lost as we walked in...
He is the classic "great guy, but poor prof." Don't get me wrong... he's a lovely human being. However, he is very confusing. His convoluted methods of explaining concepts can confuse you more than you were before, and he seems generally confused. You are better off learning the material yourself.
Go to the lectures and really try to understand what he is teaching. He works and talks really quickly but that's just because his brain processes things faster than us. He is actually a really helpful prof and will take the time to go through whatever question you have.
Soooooo nice
Dr. Somi is one of the best physics teachers that I have ever had. He used the workbook quite often which was good as it meant I wasn't scrambling to write down examples. his class was fun with not too much homework, his in-person participation was good as it rewards you for attendance but you won't fail for missing a few lectures.
Online school, lacking as much engagement as it does, it is not easy to pay attention to these online lectures. Thinking is all over the place and often I got more confused watching a lecture than I was before I started it.
This guy does not know how to effectively teach a course. He talks about the subjects as though you already know the information, rushing through everything at light speed. He also barely does examples in class, basically leaving you to learn the class on your own. Save yourself and go to the other professor's lectures
He can’t teach and is not accommodating. He goes from screen to laptop to black board. He’s a super hard tester and can’t teach
His J section physics 1 exam was extremely difficult. A lot harder than the 111 exams. Doesn't teach, and decides to do only practice problems and just copies of his notebook. Worst prof I've ever seen.
I took APSC 111 (900 Section) to improve my grade and solidify my understanding. I finished the course more confused than when I started and got a lower grade the second time taking the course. His exams were much more difficult than APSC 111. If you don't have to take APSC 111 (900 Section), accept the grade you have and avoid this prof.
he isn't very good at teaching, which is bad when the course is so hard
Professor Somi can be a bit quick with the lectures, but they're worth attending. The workbook examples are super helpful. unstuck ai and the free textbook made for great study prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
The only reason I go to class is cause he's so funny and cute
The only reason I went to class was cause he's so funny and cute
Good in-class practical examples
possibly the worst professor ive ever had, deserves an award for being the least helpful "teacher" and surprised how he was even hired in the first place. Gets visibly annoyed when you ask a question during class and the only people that claim to find him funny are the same ones that tune in to amy schumers comedy specials.
Terrible professor! Lectures were very rushed. Random irrelevant rants. Highly opinionated but does not respect other students' views. Tons of reading but is annoyed when asked questions for clarity. Not very accessible outside of class. Sometimes the grades felt unfair, and the feedback was not helpful. I'm surprised the prof was hired at all!
Fun prof with excellent demonstrations in lectures
