Fails to elaborate steps while working on examples. Admits tests and quizzes are designed to get you between 60-70%. HW questions are unrelated to what was discussed in the examples or in class. Will not slow down to help out in class. Poor office hours. Rushes through examples and rushes students when solving problems.
Energetic and highly interested professor. Shows a genuine care for his students and adaptability to their needs. Is always asking for feedback and seeking of ways to hone his pedagogy.
I love him. He is hilarious and highly informative. The homework can be a bit time consuming and the tests are based off of them. His office hours are fine and he is very cooperative with students who apply themselves.
Very helpful professor. His quizzes are based off of the homework he assigns in class. Do as many bonus points as possible because the tests are extremely difficult. He designs them to average a 65% or so. Overall a great professor, though it was difficult.
Dr. Chen is amazing. The homework is very time consuming but most of the tests and quizzes came directly from it. Tons of bonus points too. His office hour is super helpful!!!! Always willing to work with students and makes you extremely comfortable. Remember firmly to find him before the tests, that can really be a change of game.
My favorite math professor in UWL!!! I never found calculus so interesting and I am a chemistry major .His test is not hard once you understand his notes. Just got my test 2 back and it was much better than I expected.
He replies my email on 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
Definitely take Dr. Chen is you can! He's super helpful and genuinely cares about his students' success. He also takes the time to get to know his students too which is great. His tests can be hard and the homework is time consuming but he always offers extra help at his office hours. I would highly recommend him
Amazing professor! And I don't think his test is that hard. Most of them come directly from the homework and the quiz (which are not easy fairly speaking). However, be prepared for True and False questions (which always screw me up) in page 4!!!
Just finished his final 10 mins ago. Love him!!!!!!!!
My score is ready in less than 12 hours. Very fair final exam. Super helpful too!!!!
Dr. Chen is a very energetic guy who truly loves math. However he also truly loves to give difficult tests. It's unlikely you will learn much from the lecture but take notes of the problems he shows, they will be on the tests and final exam. When you do homework, take care to get help on the worst problems. They will be on the exams. They will be.
Great professor, the course material was often challenging, but I was somehow able to pull through pretty well. I wish we could have a formula sheet for the huge amount of formulas!
Always willing to help! Can be a hard grader but if you actively participate with homework and office hours then you will do just fine.
I took his Cal I, II, and now in his linear algebra. Best professor ever! Super smart! Always willing to help. Yep, his classes are tough but hey, math is tough and he's not sugarcoating it. In fact, he's the only professor that makes me want to learn more maths even though I know I suck! If you are ready for some serious math! Take him!!
He is a difficult instructor and his exams are difficult, but he pushes you because he knows you can do it and believes in every single one of his students but you have to put the time and effort in order to get that which I really liked about him. I definitely developed an appreciation for mathematics that I never thought I would have!
Originally I hated Dr. Chen. But by the end of the semester, I really grew to appreciate him. His tests are very difficult but he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and homework is easy points (and worth a lot!) Make sure and understand the most difficult problems in your homework because those often show up on tests.
Super tough grader and confusing. Would not take again
He's like every comments said, super helpful, super inspiring lecture and yes, he does push you to your limit of understanding. I hated his programming assignment at first until I realize how important it is. His linear algebra opened my mind and changed the way I view the world. Definitely take him if you care about learning.
His lecture is super inspiring. It was hard to follow at first. Everything start to make perfect sense once I catch up with the pace, which means, I to constantly preview and review the definitions as he told us to. After that linear algebra became the most useful and interesting math class. His test is hard but my grade turned out to be OK.
Great teacher. Very passionate about what he does. He moves extremely fast and expects you to know all of the material pretty in depth. I would suggest taking him to learn a lot, but be prepared to work your butt off!
He is a very difficult professor. He is always giving extra credit problems and is always willing to answer questions when you have them. Tests are difficult. Make sure you are well prepared and study a ton. Lectures can be confusing and hard to understand. Very fast paced.
Dr. Chen is the hardest math professor I've ever had. Be prepared for tons of homework, coding assignments plus 20 mins content preview per day. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy every minute of his class simply because linear algebra is awesome and Dr. Chen's lecture blowed my mind! If you are ready for some serious learning, take him in a heart bit!
The first chapter is by far the hardest to understand. If you just push through the first chapter, you will be fine. You'll get used to how he talks (he's originally from Asia) and once you do, he'll be easy to understand. Go into his office hours, he'll most likely give you extra credit just for coming in!!!
Very interesting personality. Treat you like friends (he's very young). Very inspiring and caring. Tests and quizzes are not that tough if you listen carefully to what he says. Do make sure you have at least 6 hours a week to work on the material. Linear algebra is overall a tough course.
Chen pushes students to study independently and within a group. He gives optional bookwork and mandatory online homework that is used as a grade. His tests and quizzes have almost identical problems as taken in the notes. Chen also gives multiple opportunities for extra credit and is more than willing to explain homework problems in class.
Dr. Chen is hands down my favorite professor in UWL. He's not just a math professor but a great mentor for my life! Take him at all cost! You won't regret!
He's always willing to help when you need him, and gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. He is also a very nice and funny guy and can really relate and have fun with students... But, this was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken so far. Expect lots of homework, hard tests, and group projects. Oh, and hours and hours of studying to pass.
Very cool guy! Extremely smart. Always willing to help. And hilarious in a very different way (he's Asian). He's test is tough but I guess I can't complain about that. Overall the best teacher I've ever had in my life! Take Dr. Chen and learn to love math!
Chen is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He has a bit of an accent, but still manages to explain things better that other math teachers. He makes math less boring, exciting actually if you can believe that. Very helpful both in and out of class. Friendly, easily approachable. Really shows that he cares about students.
Numerical method is the most interesting math class. The homework is very time consuming and you will learn tons of useful stuff. The content is hard, but homework and projects are free points and count for 40% of the total grade. Be sure to talk to Dr. Chen if you are trying to find a job with a math major. I wish he was my advisor.
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. He teaches everything really well and you know what to expect on the exams. With that being said, you still need to do homework and work hard to get a good grade. He does give out ALOT of bonus points if you do extra work. He really cares about his students.
I want to write the review before the final exam so I stay neutral. Dr. Chen is a great teacher, gives super good lecture and cares about his student a lot but his test is the hardest. I got frustrated after every exam but I just can't hate him for making me better. If you are serious about learning math, take him!
He is a very real person and not in anyway unpredictable. He's very inspirational and puts himself before his students. Despite that Dr. Chen has an accent, it actually helped me to pay attention; considering, he is slightly difficult to understand. Overall, a wonderful professor and person.
Dr. Chen makes you work for your grade - but good news is that he really makes sure that you learn the material. Dr. Chen cares about the success of his students which is why he is a tough grader. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take him. If you want to learn calc I and go onto Calc II, highly recommend him. He has office hours every day too
Makes the test and quiz questions so hard that even if you know the material and how to get the answer you will still get a lot wrong. Says will give partial credit if you have the right steps but never does.
Dr. Chen is an overall great professor. His coursework is quite difficult but what can you expect, it's math. He is definitely there to help anyone that needs it and will occasionally give free days where he gives a presentation and doesn't care if you sleep. The syllabus seems intimidating but its much less daunting than it seems.
He says "makes sense here" like 20 times every day and doesn't explain how he gets answers that much
Smartest person I've ever seen. His test is difficult but he offers tons of bonus point by doing puzzles or going to math talks. Shows tons of cool stuff in class and tells the most interesting stories during office hours if you can get him to start. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a general intelligent mentor.
He won't help you unless you ask for help personally. He will also get upset when you ask for help. He is a very tough grader, partial credit is rare. Tests and quizzes are hard to if you're unfortunate and end up with him, STUDY.
Great professor! His lecture is inspirational and he really cares about your success. I would recommend taking him for any class. Get ready for one of the hardest class though. My only regret was that I focused more on my other classes and not enough on his.
If you want to work, he wants to help. He's passionate about his career and teaching, and will help you if you work for it. He won't hand you a grade, but he will help you lift your own
Dr. Chen Really loves what he's doing. His lectures on AI topics blew my mind away. Thanks to that I'm now teaching myself to code. He also encourages you to develop a lifelong study habit and set a good example himself. The class requires a lot of work but I'm learning twice as much as I did in Calculus 1.
Prof. Chen is probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He says "makes sense here" at least 30 times a day, talks about random things that don't relate to calculus at all. Doesn't explain how he got his answers, tests are beyond hard, gives easy examples in class but gives hard problems on the exams and quizzes. If you get him STUDY!
Dr. Chen is hard to follow sometimes, but if you go to office hours and take advantage of all the resources offered to you, you will succeed. I really like how he is ALWAYS available to answer my questions.
Dr. Chen is really passionate about math and genuinely wants his students to learn. There's a lot of hw and u really won't be successful unless u go to lecture. He tries to include relevant examples to make it more interesting. He's super helpful during office hours too.
Awful professor. He would not help during office hours and would try to get students out of his office because he didn't want to help them. He was hard to understand and did not explain the material well.
I got a 40% on my first test and almost dropped the class but finished with an A. Getting used to his teaching style is tough at first, but he offers a TON of extra credit and help outside of class if you're willing to work. Dr. Chen really is a good guy and wants you to do well but you have to show him you're willing to put in the effort.
DO NOT RECOMMEND. This was the hardest class I've ever taken in any subject. Dr. Chen chose the hardest problems for each test which made them very difficult and he told us 10% of each exam was on things he hadn't taught us. Yes he offers extra credit but when you get a 50% on every exam extra credit doesn't help you all that much.
Great professor! He cares about the students and is willing to talk outside class when I drop by. He gives honest but good advices about my career and life. My one regret was that I focused more on my other classes and not enough on this one.
Dr. Chen is the most inspirational professor I've had thus far at UWL. While he sometimes got off track talking about AI and extraterrestrial life, it was usually totally mind blowing and made me more eager to learn. He's not the easiest professor but I would recommend him to any one majoring in something math related.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Does not explain problems nor teach criteria well. Even people in in my group were confused how to do the problems he gave us. He says "make sense here" more than he actually explains how he got the solution to the problem. LOTS of studying required and tests are extremely hard. He takes points off for simple mistakes.
Dr. Chen is a very very hard grader so get ready to work. He will take points off just because he doesn't like how it is done. There is a lot of extra credit to get your grade up so take advantage. He acts like he is better than you and doesn't care that his class average on exams is an F. I would not recommend taking him as a Calc 3 professor.
He flies through the material with little examples and subpar explanations. The examples he shows in class don't resemble the problems on test, which he makes unnecessarily difficult. He assumes you fully understand topics after just teaching them. He doesn't care if you fail, he'll just tell you to drop if you're struggling. I would not recommend.
Great Professor. Very systematic and well organised lectures. He grades the material very quickly. Extremely helpful in office hours. Quizzes are exactly like the homework and the tests are the same as the quizzes. One of the best professors I have ever seen.
Dr. Chen is hard to understand sometimes but overall I thought he was a good lecturer. He talks about different interesting applications, but you never have to know them for the tests. He gives a ton of bonus points for problems out of the textbook and they are definitely worth doing. Majority of grade is 4 tests and the final. No graded quizzes.
I hate math, but I loved Dr. Chen. He's super funny for a math professor and passionate about different applications. Lots of bonus points available. Tests are ridiculous, but he curves if everybody fails. Inspirational lectures and overall just a fascinating guy. I wish I had taken him for previous math classes!
He's very good at motivating the class. He cares about every individual's career. He manages to relate almost all his lectures to interesting modern topics like AI. He moves at a fast pace. Tests had very difficult problems that you'd only know how to solve if you took notes in lectures or did the homework (there's a LOT of ungraded homework).
Fam, so here is the thing. So if you wanna take College Algebra, don't take this man. He expects you to know everything on the first day of class. He briefly summarizes main topics and expects you to automatically get it. He says his exams are simple, but they are not. Get ready to not use your calculator because he doesn't allow it. Have fun dying
Dr. Chen is an awesome professor, but not for everyone. It's a hard class, so you have to work for your grade. Dr. Chen is very passionate about math and will often talk about AI or his research (super interesting!). The class consists of 10 group projects, 4 exams, homework, and the final. He also offers a lot of extra credit. Take Dr. Chen!
Worst math class experience ever. Exams were overly complicated. He claimed if we could do the practice quizzes, we would be able to do 90% of the exam. That's a lie. He is too smart for this class, problems were solved in 10 seconds on the board without explanation. In some classes, he went on rants about his research instead of math. DO NOT TAKE.
He's a great professor to have, always willing to talk with students after class about homework questions or anything that crosses their mind. The best math teacher I've ever had, but still made me work for my grade in the class.
Professor Chen is a very kind and personable professor. Despite this, the class is very difficult. The lecture examples are much easier than the homework which makes homework difficult, and exam questions are much easier than the homework questions which makes exams difficult. The people at the tutoring center were confused by the homework . . .
He's an online nightmare, the class is every single day of the week, so forget trying to catch up in between classes, you'll hear 'make sense over?' more times than you can mentally withstand. He'll make metaphors that he just won't connect to the material in any way and expect you to be an algebra professor first day of class.
Dr. Chen is a self centered professor. He is always there to help, but if you have never taken Calculus before you still will struggle. 85% of the total grade is exams. It may have been different circumstances in person, but still is a nightmare online.
This class was tough but you can get the grade you want if you work for it. Explanations in class were at times hard to understand, but he really does do his best. ALWAYS helpful when student's have questions, and begins every single class asking if we have any questions to go over. It's not easy, but he is a good professor who really cares!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is a nice enough guys, but expects you to know everything about the topic after teaching main ideas only. He doesn't explain the problems when he does then to help you. Tests are worth most of the grade, and they are ridiculously hard. They don't resemble the homework at all.
Would not recommend his class. It is very difficult and he expects you to know everything right from the start. The tests are very difficult and they are more or about half your grade. So if you don't do well on the tests you are screwed for a lack of better words. Also not very much help when I needed help.
He's a very interesting and likable guy. His accent isn't too bad and I was able to understand him. His exams are hard and tricky so be prepared to know the material very well. Group projects are graded on completion so those are free points. Lectures are sometimes boring, sometimes not. He cancelled class here and there which was cool.
He is too smart to teach this class. He will take questions, but solve in in seconds taking no time to explain through the work. Spends half the class talking about his research or any number of things that is not the class. The homework only makes up a certain portion of the test, so be prepared to see material for the first time on it. 0/5
It is a hard class, but Dr. Chen is very passionate, and sometimes teaches about things outside of the class, which is cool to learn about. The grade is 80% tests, which is pretty tough. Textbook homework is optional, but I suggest you do it, it helps a lot with the tests. Also, do the bonus problems, they help your grade a lot.
He is a really smart guy and it shows that he expects everyone else to be brilliant to do well in his class. He does not take the time to explain things, and if you ask for help he usually is pretty degrading, though his advice did help. If you aren't amazing at math, I'd find a different teacher.
I love Dr. Chen, he is so smart and clearly interested in math and its capabilities. He is very open to answering questions during and outside of class. Basically gave us all a 100% on our Exam 4 because it is graded upon completion to help bump up our grades. He is funny and makes a boring class fun. I definitely recommend taking Dr. Chen.
Dr. Chen is very knowledgeable, however, that can be a fault of his. He takes no time to explain things thoroughly, so you must be ready to teach most of the classwork to yourself. If you have taken calculus before you will probably be fine. However, if not, find a different teacher. I'm a decent student, but I struggled to learn his material.
It makes sense that all of the positive reviews are commenting about his personality, but unfortunately that does not make someone a good teacher. You get points off for showing your work on 25% of the exams so partial credit is impossible. Goes over the history of calculus more than the actual material. Take him if you want to waste a semester.
Dr. Chem is very smart, but it is difficult to learn from him because he treats everything like it should be obvious, when it might not be for students. It's difficult to do anything to the standard he wants you too. He will meet with you outside of class, but tries to help you with the minimum and won't help much beyond that. But overall nice guy.
Dr. Chen is an overall great professor. He shows great care for his students. Bonus points are applied to exams, and they are easy to earn. Math has always been easy for me, so I tend to get bored in class. However, Dr. Chen kept me focused and "entertained" the whole time. I would recommend for anyone who needs calc in college.
Song Chen is too smart to be teaching calc 1. He does not use a slideshow and lectures strictly off of memory which can make things hard to understand. He lectures very fast and goes through things without being super clear. If you haven't taken calc yet maybe try it with a different professor. He is very nice and cares about his students though.
Be prepared to work very hard and study long. The exams are quite difficult but Dr. Chen is extremely smart and passionate about the subject. He will alter the whole lesson of the day to the classes needs. Great professor.
He is an extremely tough grader so be prepared to put in the work. Overall I must say my experience was very good with him. He is a very funny guy and being in class is honestly entertaining. Please do all of the extra credit, your future self will thank you. Go to class everyday. I promise you won't pass the class if you don't.
This man will show you the truth, he is the key.
Dr. Chen made me feel not smart enough for his class. I had to do a lot of work outside of class to come close to understanding what was going on. I recommend if you do take him to focus on memorizing the problems and how to solve them rather than trying to understand the math because he reuses the same problems. He also rants on random topics.
Chen's lessons are pretty difficult and it will take a lot of studying and hard work to get a good grade in this class. He is very smart but can be difficult to follow in lectures. Although, he is very passionate for what he teaches and has a lot of knowledge he is willing to share if you are open to learn and ask questions.
Dr. Chen is impossibly intelligent. He always asks if anyone has questions at the start of class, is an engaging lecturer, and is passionate about Calculus. However, he also teaches super fast from memory, which results in needing to study and learn a lot on your own to understand what's going on. He gave 100% for the fourth exam to boost grades.
Dr.Chen is simply the best for calculus. His lectures are beyond textbooks and equations. He clearly explains the practical application of everything. It is always fun to attend his lectures. Further, the bonus questions help maintain a good grade. He is very caring and clears questions at the beginning of every lecture.
Dr. Chen is one of those professors you either like or hate, and it is easy to tell on your first day of class. In my experience, he teaches content fast and very well. He clearly explains the functional application of what we learn. Not only is he hilarious but he also offers a LOT of extra credit. If you want to challenge yourself, pick Dr. Chen!
Dr. Chen is a horrible teacher. Instead of teaching, he spits information at you with no explanation. He expects you to have a deep understanding of the basics of calculus from the start and because I came from a high school with a bad math department, it took incredible effort to keep up. He does repeat his tests but that's your only saving grace.
Avoid at all costs! Exams and homework entirely different. You will 100% fail unless you do amazing on the exams. Incredibly rude and will belittle you if you don't understand something. He views students as incompetent and "crybabies". If math comes natural to you, sure, but if you haven't I HIGHLY recommend finding a different professor.
Avoid! extremely tough grader and super difficult to follow in class. I don't think anybody is currently passing in my class! I suck at math and eh makes it harder to understand. lectures are impossible to follow, and he moves fast covering 2 or 3 units in one class period. take any other professor!
Worst class I've ever taken. He's insanely hard to follow, math 150 should not be that hard. In exams if one step of your problem was wrong, you get no points at all. He never explains what you do wrong or how to improve. Avoid taking him at all costs.
