very insecure about her teaching, hard exams, easy classwork
Works with the class to improve grades. Somewhat unsure of her teaching.
REALLY cares about how you're doing- really enjoyed her class- ask questions!
Told students off, and their fault for failing.(Everyone)
She projects high expectations. Get to know her personally, & life will be good!
I don't know why others put bad things, I have had her twice, easy, easy, easy
nice lady, but if you want to pass don't take any other classes--lots of work
not a very good teacher, makes tests to hard, entire grade is on two tests+final
flexible with her teaching, willing to help students, have to study
Tests are difficult, but there is extra credit. Exellent teacher. Take her.
Willing to help, but complains about students for periods of time...
Exams were difficult, but she is nice and willing to help you all the time
Willing to help, but blames students for faults and comes off as very defensive
O.K. , blames students for doing bad
Gets frustrated w/ students easily. Will not give lower than B- in 300+ classes
An excellent teacher.Explains things very well.Take her!!!!!
Doesn't understand her own examples, very defensive
I don't know why some people give her bad ratings. She is an awesome teacher.
Always willing to help via email,in and outside class.Take her if you want to le
She speaks better English than most of us.Guys get a life!!!!
Very effective, which is evident as she is the most rated economics professor

I loved the class, she is great.
Really takes time to teach chapters and does not rush the sem.
good techer had her for eco 211 and eco 350....sometimes unclear w/ what is due
good english, hard tests, definately makes you responsible for your own grade.
Very effective teaching and willing to help you. Very sexy!
must study for tests, easy to understand after first couple of classes, helpful
Approachable, helpful, funny. Does great and would recommend her for any ECON
great professor, loved the class. good discussions
Sonia is one of the most intelligent women I know, she inspires a person.
a great lady. really cares if you learn the stuff. goes at a nice pace
Teaches at slow pace. Uses lots of math and formulas. Test are challenging.
Great prof, wants you to understand, exams cover in class material,no surprise
gets frustrated easily, but very good teacher in wanting students to learn
very difficult, tries to be tricky.
Friendly, helpful teacher that gives you the answers to her tests. EZ!!!!!!!!!!!
TAKE THIS PROF!! Just talk about her life in India. She'll love you/awesome!!!
She's great!! Helps a lot and cares for you :)

Yes she is very clear and very helpful, but somtimes she is too clear and WAY TOO SLOW. If you take this class be prepared to be bored out of your mind. Really nice professor.
Thought i wouldn't do so well in the class...but w/ a lot of extra effort she makes sure you do well if you try for it
I don't think MicroEcon is easy 'coz it's very picky and contian details .. she would never let you fail .. believe me I did well because she makes you take every effort to go well and understand the content. Great prof, take her!!!
Don't blame her for being slow if students don't know even the easy 7th grade Algebra. She's awesome and is ALWAYS willing to help. At least she's not like the crappy profs. who only teach for the heck of it but who don't want students to learn.
Class is a little challenging, but not bad if you put in the work, grade ends up being determined by how well your group does though
One of best profs at GVSU.. take if you want an A.. all you have to do is pay attention to Practice exams.. love this lady
I am only taking the class for my theme and I really enjoy it and I am learning a lot. She keeps the class very interesting!
One of the most fair profs I have ever had. She is a nice lady and is always willing to help you out. As long as you go to class you should have no problems.
She puts down women and playsup to boys. anyone who asks a question or makes any comments are put down in front of the class this includes the males. She says she will help you but is never at her appointed office hours. she always talks with a heavy acce
Great Prof! Willing to help students and makes class interesting
Very helpful
seems like satan, but if you do the work you can pass the class
Great prof!! The class is completely your own opinion, nothing from the book (don't buy it). Tests are easy, no final. Grade depends on journals and short papers.
This woman is amazing. Very knowledgable and a perfect role model for girls. Really helpful and is there to teach. So back off whoever it was who said she has a heavy accent and isn't helpful.
I love Sonia. She is great. For Econ and Gender, the class is cake. No final, easy A. If you have her for Micro, you have to a little bit of work, but she reviews her tests to see if they are too challenging after the first and handles according
Is extremely rude and defensive. Asks for your opionion on surveys, then ****es the next day in class about the reveiws she got. Actually keeps people after class for talking. Very knowledgable, though.
Provides an easy A but gets defensive if anyone questions what she is saying. Teaches at a very, very slow pace which is both good and bad.
She is the best teacher I have had at GVSU. She is very thorough and systematic. She uses a lot of real world examples in the class, which makes econ interesting and easy to understand.
If you want to learn, take her class. She actually teaches and takes you through the material step-by-step. Exams are hard, but she bases them on sample exams discussed in class.
Sonia is cool. Presents the information in a way that is understandable. Prepares you for her tests and is always willing to help out. Study and succeed. In response to a comment below, she is far from satan she is an angel. The best of the best!
She makes things kind of complicated...nice to look at...focuses alot on MATH!!calc...!
she is very nice and fricken smart! Study her practice tests b/c the exams are almost identicle.
i have to admit, that ever since the first day of class i was infatuated with her. she is beautiful and she is the smartest lady i've ever met.
Great prof, knows her stuff, pay attention and study practice test you will do fine.
Sonia is a VERY nice woman. She curves at the end of the semester. However, she makes things too complicated. For example, she introduces long problems applying one rule instead of simplified problems showing all of the rules. She will help if asked.
Easiest class ever. She is nice, if you treat her nicely. Gives lots of opportunity for points. Her practice exams are almost identical to her actual exams. Very easy.
Pretty easy. do the HW, and problems sets. and you'll be fine. the tests are very similar to the practice tests.
This professor is wonderful. She is very knowledgeable and interested in the topics presented. I was not interested in this class when I signed up, but I ended up loving it.
This professor is very helpful, very clear, and very organized. The examples she gives in class are very clear and help with the homework and problem set questions. If you do the work and read the book, you will do just fine in this class! Definitely take this prof is you get the chance, she is good!
i hate it, i really do. she's awful-i have not gotten a C to date in any seidman course and she may be my first
To the previous rater, is she awful because she is giving you a C instead of an F or because she is making you realize that you do not know enough and are not well prepared?
I don't see how anyone in this class could not like her. She teaches you what you need to know, has problem sets that lead to easy grades, and gives practice exams that show you everything you need to know for the exam. Great econ prof.
She is nice and wants the class to do good but has trouble connecting to students at times. Class average is below a C, although she does curve at the end. Makes it frustrating though when you don't know your real grade til the end of class. I'd recommend this class if you're good at math/graphs.
Awesome Professor! Such a sweetie and so helpful if you ask her. I loved her and her class.
OK class, great professor. Don't worry about your grade. Curved our class a whole letter grade at the end. Take it w/ her if you need the class, but I would recommend something else for an upper-level elective!
She obviously wants her students to succeed and will do anything she can to help you out. I'm glad I had her as a professor.
great prof. very very nice. tests kind of suck, but thats just me, i suck at aking tests. easy class overall
The class is not that hard, but she makes things confusing. She loves to impress students by taking 20 minutes of class to do a problem with with useless calculus she says you don't need to know. And don't ever accuse her of anything cuz she will complain to the entire class about it.
This professor is good. She knows her stuff, is willing to help, and she does everything she can to help her students succeed.
The best prof and class you will ever have. Do your work and you'll be fine
She is a very practical teacher, she truly made this class fun. She "takes care" of her students so you should get a good grade if you do the assignment and journals. Dont buy the book you hardly ever use it so dont even bother. Great class for 300 level econ. Definately take this class if you can it will help with your GPA
Very hard grader. She is terrible, I hated this class so much. Tests were SUPER hard!
What a laughable allegation made by the previous rater. Dr. Dalmia is one of the best profs you can take at Grand Valley. I have taken all of her classes and she has provided lots of opportunities to her students to do well in all of them.
She gives you a lot of oppurtunity to get a good grade. If you come to class everyday and do your homework, you will get a good grade. Her tests are hard but as long as you do the homework you should be fine. Quizzes are easy and a gpa booster because she picks the questions from the homework. Take this professor, you'll learn a lot!!!
I was disgusted with the course and how it was taught. As an intro class, she expects you to know too much previous information about econ.I tried to ask questions in her office once, and she gave me the vibe that I was an idiot, she didn't help me. I have been an A/B student throughout college, and let me tell you, my grade was barely passing...
Sonia Dalmis is the best econ professor at GVSU. She really cares about her students, but she will make you work and earn your grade. She is a no-nonsense person. She is very personable when you go to talk to her during her office hours and will even go out of her way to make an appointment to help you understand. She also speaks clearly.
sonia is a great prof., she is funny and does teach the material well. If you have her take her if you dont get her. There is HW and some take home practice test, but do them and you will be fine, go to class do the HW study a lil and you should get an A or B
Go to class. She walks you though problems step by step so you are never really lost with anything. Do the practice attempts on Problem Sets...they help when you talk to other students.
If your planning in getting a econ degree you should take her, if you want an easy A take someone else, she tough but fair
Not impressed. I think she has a snotty attitude and does not explain things very well. You don't get much wiggle room with her. Grades are not posted, and she's not approachable enough to ask. I wouldn't recommend her. She's not terrible, but I definitely wanted class to end every day. Stay up on your reading...this is a self taught class.
She is a great professor. If you think this class is too hard, there's no way you're going to make it through Seidman. She explains things as clearly as possible--it's not her fault that half of her students are slackers who don't study. If at all possible, take every ECON class with Sonia.
I didn't like her. She's a HUGE femanist who only talks about females and their achievement. Has a whole other point of view on issues. Class isn't too bad. Exams were take home and pretty easy. Assigns everything due within a week of each other. Foreign, so hard to understand. Wouldn't recommend
Great prof. even tho many people disagree, those who don't like her or the class aren't in college to learn, they are lazy. She gives you all the material and information you need to do well in the class. Do the practice hw online, and yes, even read the book, but her tests are straight forward and there are no surprises. Highly recommended.
Sheis very clear in her lectures and most of the class is very easy if you have taken Eco 210. She is snotty, but a good teacher. Quizes are easy and problems sets are due after every chapter but you can discuss anwsers with peers and get 100% on all of them. Go to class and take notes and the class is VERY simple.
I don't understand why people call Dalmia snotty, it's college so of course we have to adhere to her expectations. She is very knowledgable of the course material and does an excellent job of teaching it. She is ALWAYS willing to help those who need it. If you do what you need to do, you can easily get a good grade in the class.
If you are willing to try in class, you will get an A, period. If you slack off alot, you'll get a C or lower. VERY effective teacher, very clear, very helpful. She does her best to make economics easy to understand. She is very lenient on grading for those who try to do well.
Easily one of the best profs I've had at GVSU. She will make you work hard. Can be a bit rigid, but extremely clear in lecture, has tons of office hours (go if you are ever stuck - she's very helpful 1-on-1). Be warned: if you think you can coast, good luck. But if you make a legit effort, there's no reason why you shouldn't get the A.
She is an amazing economics teacher. She may be hard and have a lot of work but it helps. She is very good at explaining the subject and helping after class if you still do not understand.
Grades on a curve and will not let you get below a C if you do all your work, which can be challenging. Take Sonia if you are undecided on a professor.
One of the best professors I have had at GVSU. She explains things extremely well and is very willing to work at the students pace. Goes out of her way to help students, promptly responds to emails, holds extra office hours before exams even on a saturday.I also respected the fact that she was uncompromising on maintaing high standards in class.
Don't be fooled by all the positive comments, take her eco 312 class and you will be tempted to withdraw within the first week.
Sure don't be fooled by someone who stayed with the class the entire semester. But definitely believe this person who dropped after the first week of class!!!!!!! Can see who had a credibility problem here.
Dalmia was a great econ professor. She genuinely wants you to do well in her class. She gives practice quizes and quizes which help you remember the material, and, unlike others have said, she is extremely approachable if you have any trouble in her class. I had an aweful prof for 210 so she was a breath of fresh air.
I honestly think she just had a bad semester. I took this class with her because I had heard great things. Its seems at times she was just out of it. Lot of ups and downs. At times very unapproachable. Lot of unannounced in-class assignment that she didn't give enough time to complete. Tests and quiz were very straight-forward tho
Sonia: Interesting teacher, willing to help, despite her accent understandable. However, I would never advise anyone to take ECO 350, the gender economics class has to be the most worthless class I've taken with the most incredibly confusing work, contraditing research, and non-economic based articles. If your a guy definately stay away.
Dalmia makes her expectations very clear at the beginning of the semester so that students know what they are getting into. Then to complain about her is unfair. Her course is so well laid out and planned that if you do not get a good grade it is totally your own fault. She was extremely patient and helpful. If you are in college to learn take her!
I totally loved her class. She is tough and has high expectations. She does not rush through the material as a result I learnt a lot in her class. I am taking her again next semester and would recommend her to anyone serious about their college education.
Pretty good teacher, pretty difficult class. If you put forth effort you should do decent.
She is a good teacher always willing to help. ECO 312 is one of the harder classes I've taken but I learned a lot...some algebra and very basic calculus (simple derivatives) involved. Wish the class was structured so it'd approach one side of economics completely then the other.
Very very difficult....I would recommend going to class or you will be in trouble. Overall, she is a great professor and is very knowledgeable.
Great professor! Most of our time was spent on discussions, rather than class notes. I learned more information from this class than anyother class I have taken. If you like to speak about your opinions, Dr. Dalmia will listen and accept your view, reguardless if she agrees with you or not. I highly reccommend this class to anyone!!!
Dalmia is a great prof for those serious about econ. If you do not want to be challenged, don't take her-it's as simple as that. If you do take her class, she is very helpful to those who ask and will make sure you understand the material.
Sonia is very good professor. She has high standards, and expects you to maintain them. ALWAYS willing to help, i think i spent more time in her office than in the class room. She focuses heavily on math. I found myself struggling to keep up wtih the math, so i didnt really catch any of the concepts. If you like math and are good at it, take her.
Great prof. Gets a bad rap because students feel she doesn't explain everything...not the case. If it isn't on paper she tells the class. Very passionate. Will learn a lot. Great class to take even if you don't like eco. Lots of articles and personal experiences. Always willing to help.
She is an excellent teacher but very demanding. There's daily attendance but if you don't skip more than 3 times you can do the extra credit at the end of the semester. There's book homework as well as 40 mult choice questions per chapter. You get 2 attempts at this & then a quiz following. The tests are difficult and short. Just attend & try hard.
Very hard, but if you stick to it and stay with the material it's very do-able. She pushes students to do their best and actually learn the material. Tries to trick you up exams. Exams are tough, but if you do poorly you won't fail as long as you do everything else. Go to class - good attendance allows you to do extra credit!
She knows her stuff, but was one of the most demanding professors I've ever had. She assigns tons of homework- more than is probably necessary to learn class content. Her tests are extremely difficult as well. Overall, her method/approach took the fun out the econ. Don't take this class unless you're extremely serious about econ.
Dr. Dalmia expects a lot from her students, but if you put time into the class you will get a good grade. I learned more with her than any other prof so far! She is always willing to help, explains concepts thoroughly, however she tries to always trip students up in everything so you have to read everything very carefully and understand concepts
Dr. Dalmia is an excellent prof. The class is rigorous, but she provides typed written notes, sample exams and guidance on HW. She is extremely helpful, responsive on email and available to meet with stu. outside class. She does expect a lot from stu. It you want to learn and be challengend definitely take her class.
This is a toughie!!! We copied and pasted numbers from data sets for HOURS outside of class...the final research project and other internet assignments take 5 hours each in the computer lab! And that's if you do them right the FIRST time.
This class is very tough. Alot of math involved, she is very intimidating at first and you will feel like its impossible to get a good grade but she curves exams and gives extra credit. I recommend this class, u will learn alot and she is very helpful outside of class.
This class was very difficult. The professor speaks very fast at times and does not leave a lot of room for processing the material, although she provides great powerpoint notes and other materials for guidance. She is very intimidating and at time I was not comfortable asking her questions. I did not use the book and she takes attendance.
Sonia Dalmia is a very clear prof. and will assign due dates for homework after talking to the class about it. The exams are a mid level difficulty but if you do the practice exam you shouldn't fail.
Great professor. You can't really miss class though, you'll miss a ton of lecture. No textbook required!
Professor Dalmia is the best economics teacher at Grand Valley. She was always willing to meet us outside of class. She is extremely nice and not intimidating at all once you talk to her. She wants her students to succeed while living up to their full potential. I plan on taking another class with her next fall.
Professor Dalmia is a genius. If you have any interest in economics or even for an elective -- TAKE HER! I took this class and I'm a finance & accounting major. I will admit, she expects a lot out of her students but it's only because she wants you to push yourself.
Sonia Dalmia is a genius! She is a wonderful professor and if you have any interest in econ or want to take it for an elective, take her! You will not regret it! Class is mandatory.
Professor Dalmia is a fantastic teacher! Not only is she briliant, but she has great passion for Economics and is more than willing to take the time outside of class and help you along. This class demands a heavy effort, but at the end you get what you deserve. Don't be afraid to test yourself!
This professor is tough, be warned. She does know what she is talking about but be ready from the word "GO" or you will face dire consequences. Print the notes she gives and stick to them like glue. Oh, and she says you won't need the text book for the class. Be careful in this decision. The text book reiterates what she is trying to explain.
Be prepared to learn. As long as you do everything she doesn't let you fail (even if you fail all the assignments). Pretty demanding teacher.
Decent professor. Says she is going to be objective on the first day of class but ends up being quite subjective. Lets you discuss and share your opinion but if she doesn't agree with you you will know . You will learn a lot though
There are too many holes in the way that she teaches. She mentions the first day the basic use of calculus; underclassmen. Prereq info would be nice.
I have taken her and another professor for this class. She is way... more difficult. She the use of calculus was surprising; even though it is basic as she mentions. Overall, she is helpful and nice. I just feel that she teaches the class as if it is the only one you will be taking the entire semester. Workload is nuts. She does all she can to help
This is not an easy class at all and the workload is crazy. I am going to guess that if you take this class with any other teacher it will be much more manageable. She is a very helpful teacher though which is a plus but most of work is very difficult to grasp. So overall, a good person but a very challenging class.
Best teacher I ever had. The test's are easy and the lectures were always interesting.
If you are interested in taking a college level course and actually learn something take this class with her. She is an excellent teacher who does not lower her standards at all. Her class is very structured. She provides her own notes, gives sample exams, problem sets, class exercises that completely put the grade in the students control.
I can't say enough good things about this lady. Professor Dalmia is an incredible professor. This class is very challenging. Only take it if you have proficient math skills. The class is in danger of being discontinued because of low enrollment. That would be a shame. This is an awesome class, and you learn a lot of valuable applications of econ.
Warning up front: Professor Dalmia is tough. Unless you have a fairly strong background in math, don't take this class with her. She was a very nice professor one-on-one but in class shes strict. She means well and I respect her completely. I just wish I knew that this class was harder than it needed to be. Would recommend if you like math.
Never Again. I have only had one other professor that I disliked this much. She is not engaging then blames students for not participating. Then a student tries to participate by asking a questions and is met with eye rolls and belittling remarks.
Hope the previous rater dropped the class. I am taking this course this semester and can seriously say that I am learning a lot. Yes, she is tough but all she wants is her students to succeed and think for success.
ECO 312 is a tough course, but she makesforces you to learn a lot. You must master the concepts. Understanding them does not suffice. Sometimes she makes you feel stupid if you volunteer a wrong answer, but she likes it when you make an effort. There are lots of online lectures you need to watch. This course should be worth more than 3 credits.
She gives you 2 exams, a midterm and a final, which both are take home and she expects you to literally use your notes to answer the questions. You do in class assignments after each chapter and if you are not there you will not get the points. She stands by her opinion but listens to everyone and engages conversation. She was very approachable
Awesome woman. Super inspirational, and very thorough professor. Very passionate about what she teaches. Pretty tough grader, I had to visit her office hours a couple times but always extremely helpful and kind. I would most definitely take her again.
Has a very thick accent, and course is not interesting at all. The course is easy enough that I can study on my own and ace it! Also, she really gets mad at times. Not sure why! Won't take her again.
Professor Dalmia is one of the greatest professors I have had at Grand Valley. She encourages students think about topics from all perspectives and to respect everyone's viewpoints. The course was very interesting. She is a tough grader, but if you need help with something or need clarification she is more than willing to help.
Good prof. Different teaching style then I'm accustomed to that involved watching online lecture before coming to class. She is a fair grade and explains the material very well. Assigns homework but it is very manageable. Has some great personal inspirational anecdotes she tells through out the semester. Enjoyed her as a teacher and the course.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. "Has a very thick accent, and course is not interesting at all. The course is easy enough that I can study on my own and ace it! Also, she really gets mad at times. Not sure why! Won't take her again."
She overall is a good professor, however she was not use to teaching an entry level class. She did not seem to respect the students. If you did not answer the question correctly she would just ignore what you said and restate the question. I do not know if she's better with the upper level courses but anything below 300 is not her strong suit.
I enjoyed the class however, her tough grading and never knowing what my grade was in the class was the deal breaker. Do not take this if you want an easy elective. The first test was take home, the second was the in class final. Emphasis on the tough grading
Gender Econ is not a difficult class by any means, but since professor Dalmia is such a tough grader it kinda makes it difficult. Lectures, believe it or not, are actually pretty interesting. She will never budge on her own opinions, but she makes a lot of good points and brings aware real problems facing the business world and beyond.
Dalmia is pretty great. Her tests and assignments are graded tough however if you go to class and take part in the discussion she will round your grade at the end of the semester. She likes to give you an overall grade that reflects the effort you put into the course and not just the overall result your exams gave you which is awesome.
10/10 would recommend taking this class. The class is tough and requires a lot of effort, but Sonia teaches in a VERY effective way that really enhances your understanding of concepts. She really cares about the amount her student's learn and is always willing to go out of her way to meet with students and answer any questions they have.
Really enjoyed having Professor Dalmia. She's a tough grader, so be prepared. You can tell she cares about what she's teaching and loves when students participate. Class consists of some individual assignments, but mostly group assignments and projects. No complaints except for the harsh grading.
Sonia is the nicest lady. I've been in Seidman College of Business for 3 years and she is the toughest grader I've ever come across. You can be right and still lose points. Supposedly she gives a massive grade curve at the end though. She's inspiring, kind, intelligent, and strict. This class was enjoyable, but a lot of work for an Econ elective.
she is a nice lady. but the harsh grader. the class started off very discussion based, so when it came time for the midterm. nobody did well because we thought it was opinionated. it was not and the material was supposedly in her powerpoints. she sent out a excel sheet with grades and nobody has above an 85. most have a C or below
Doctor Dalmia is a great professor. At first, I thought she would be the worst. She is very passionate about the topics she teaches. She gives great feedback and curves grades. No computers allowed, though. Lots of power points and group work. Would take class with her again!
Sonia is a respected professor with tenure. Insanely intelligent and well spoken. One of the toughest ladies in Seidman. Work hard on group stuff and study for tests, because she's a very harsh grader. Slaps on a massive curve at the end, but you still need to put forth a sufficient amount of effort. Take part in discussions and engage!!
When you get grades back it's gonna feel like you're absolutely gonna fail the class and wreck your GPA, but then you'll probably end up with a B. Don't sweat it
Incredibly smart and inspirational. Down to earth and really cares about her students. If you want to learn you will learn.
Sonia is such a wonderful and inspiring professor to take. Work hard on your assignments, ask for feedback in her office, and you will be fine. She grades very hard but an A is very very possible. She challenges you but that is how you learn! I wish I could take more classes with her. Exams are tough, so be ready to be asked about anything
Professor Dalmia is by far one of the best ECO profs at GV. She doesn't give out grades and really makes her students work for it but you learn the material. Has an inspirational story if you can get her to share about it. Really cares about her students & wants them to be successful. See her in office hours, very helpful & will work w/ you. 10/10
Professor Dalmia is brilliant and hard working. She has high expectations of students. If you want to be challenged by a professor to do your best work she will do it. She is willing to give plenty of help along the way. Don't look to her for an easy A.
She has a fairly strong accent and has extremely high expectations. Failed the first exam but bounced back with a tutor. She is a tough grader when it comes to homework. Got pretty miserable but I pushed through. She usually teaches more advanced classes and is the head of the Economics Department. Wants you to succeed though!
Professor Dalmia is a great econ professor who really knows her stuff. You will learn a lot in her class that proves valuable, not only in school but life as well. Professor Dalmia does her best to challenge her students and really push them to their limits. That being said, she is very reasonable and understanding if you approach her for help.
