Very organized, a little hard to understand at times, but the organization makes up for it. Lots of quizzes but they are based off the text book questions.
Notes are super organized, however if you don't really understand you'll want to read the textbook for clarity. Quizzes and midterms are pretty straightforward, no trick questions
Her accent makes it very difficult to understand what she is saying. She skips a lot of steps when doing examples on the board and when you ask for clarity she just reiterates what she said earlier. She is very accessible outside class but getting help often leaves you more confused than when you walked into her office hours.
By far the worst teacher I have had at Langara. When you ask her to clarify something all she can do is repeat what she had said earlier. If you ask for further clarification she gets confused herself and wastes precious class time trying to figure out what the students asked.
The examples done in class are nothing like the content given on the quizzes and midterms. The final exam was created by the department chair and i felt as if she didn't prepare me enough for the level of difficulty of the questions on the final. If you think her midterms are hard then you should withdraw before it's too late.
She is hard, but clear on what she is doing. If you come to class and do whatever she wants you to, you'll do well in her class. But, be careful on questions from previous final exams because there will be similar on the real final. Not understand, come to ask her. I did all this and I'll get at least an A for sure.
Sonoko makes my fear of Math 1174 a thing in the past. I just need a credit to move on with my program and I get it with her. She is awesome. Thanks.
The only bad thing I can think of her is her English accent. But, hey, many other profs have that as well. She is really good at what she is doing. Awesome.
Nakano has a thick japanese accent. She is really nice and helpful.
Don't listen to past reviews, simply because this isn't an easy course ITS CALCULUS. But Sonoko is by far the best instructor, I never even bought the textbook. Just follow her notes and understand her notes as well as do the practice finals and you'll be fine. you don't even have to simplify your answers, and she gives part marks! Easy A
Sonoko is a caring and kind individual. Her accent takes getting used to but once you attend a couple of classes it's easy to understand her. She is thorough in her explanations and makes sure students understand concepts before moving on. Be attentive and always ask questions, it's how you learn best in her class. She is funny and a real gem.
Sonoko explains math concepts very clear and makes them easy to understand. Ask questions and go to her office hours; she is very kind and helpful. I had math anxity when I took math course with another instructor as I was unfamiliar with math, but she made it go away. Go to her lectures, work hard and you will receive a good grade.
Sonoko is awesome at explaining different concepts & expanding on them. Her lectures are necessary to attend in order to do well in the class. Though the bulk of her notes/concepts are taken from the textbook, her in class explanations & examples can't be found elsewhere. She's also very good at answering any kinds of questions you may have
Despite her accent, she explains very well and several times. I haven't been using any textbooks since her lectures are well-organized, clear and it was enough for me to succeed. She is kind and she always helps with any kind of problems. Even though she doesn't really care about attendance, I think it makes this course much easier.
I don't recommend you skip her class because she tells you what's on her midterms/quizzes. Quizzes are usually questions out of the textbook or similar. she is a good teacher and will explain things well. pay attention because she goes through things quickly. also try not to go on your phone because she feels it's very disrespectful towards her
Sonoko has really thorough lectures, and is always willing to expand on her work and clarify the concepts! She's super approachable, kind, and wants all her students to succeed. She definitely made math an enjoyable subject for me! She's also extremely quick to grade your work, so you always know where you stand.
always checks and asks the class if we understood before she moves on. Very caring and sympathetic. Class was boring but I'm suspicious to judge bc math for me always is. Great notes. Super sweet woman.
Some people complain about her Japanese accent but I had no trouble understanding her. She'll tell us EXACTLY what's on the exams/quizzes coming up so there are no surprises. When she senses that the class doesn't understand something, she'll rewrite in a different way so we do understand. She's amazing, I would take her class again for sure.
Best math teacher I have ever had. Very good explanations, awesome drawing. She makes sure she isn't making mistakes on the board. Will do question again if confusing. Always smiling and positive. Has a Japanese accent, but understandable. Fair marker. Very timely with D2L and emails. I actually enjoyed Math. Like, wow.
she's an amazing math prof. she is very patient and starts going through more basic stuff to help you understand. repeats the material if anyone doesn't understand. if you listen in the class and study the textbook questions carefully you'll be fine. she has an accent but you can keep up if you pay attention.
Many people blame her coz she has strong Japanese accent, but Vancouver is quite multicultral. Exams are not too difficult if you dont skip any class and focus on what she says. One bad thing is she usually has class at 8:30, which is quite early.
Take Sonoko and you won't regret... Thats for sure. Marks super easy, midterms are fairly easy .She has an accent but it is perfectly understandable. She cares a lot about her students and is always willing to go over the stuff again and again, until you understand it. Final was a little bit hard though since it was created by the department.
Such an amazing professor! Her accent may throw some people off, but it was bearable to me! She's great at explaining the materials, and don't be afraid to ask her for help! If you work hard enough and practice the questions, you will succeed in this class. Do the 5% online homework because it can raise your mark drastically!
Good instructions!
Good instructions! Great
Take Sonoko and you won't regret. That's for sure. Marks super easy, midterms are fairly easy . She has an accent but it is perfectly understandable. She cares a lot about her students and is always willing to go over the stuff again and again, until you understand it. Final was a quite hard though since it was created by the department not her.
The best pro ever.
she has good knowledge about the topics but i was not able to relate to the method of her teachings, she is not really good at clearing your doubts and will not motivate you at all. she is not willing to understand the difficulties the student is facing. will not recommend her classes to any one.
Seriously I am not that bad in Math, but this teacher made me hate calculus so much and gave up on this course after the first midterm. She gave us too many questions to be finished in 50 minutes which lots of ppl failed. I failed her midterms but got pretty good mark on my final exam since the questions are provided by the math department. Nah
worst prof.
Worsr prof
Pace of class is very fast, moves through lectures extremely quickly. Difficult tests and given under and hour for exams which is not enough time. Thick accent which makes it hard to understand. You need to study a lot to pass. She is a nice person, but not the best at teaching a complicated and confusing subject.
A GPA killer, mid-terms are not related to what she teaches in the class. Many students fail in the final exam.
She is a very caring prof. Exams are straightforward as long as you understand her lectures
I took both 1170 & 1171 with her. She's a nice and caring person but really hard to understand due to accent. Her criteria for both of the classes is the same. Her quizzes sometimes are similar to the notes , textbook questions or just are random stuff that she hasn't taught but expects you to know. Midterms are brutal.
She really cares about her students- she replies to emails quickly and is always accessible after class to answer her student's questions. Calculus is always challenging no matter who teaches it- but do the suggested problems and midterms will be a breeze. She also taught us to use the magic hexagon and I can't believe I didn't know about it before
Sonoko is one of my favorite teachers at Langara. She is really helpful during her office hours and her lecture notes are well organized. If you work hard, do the recommended exercises, ask questions, then getting an A for this course shouldn't be a problem. She will let you know what type of questions will be on midterms and finals. No surprises.
Sonoko is accessible outside class and will explain whatever you want. The only drawback is that she only teaches you the basics concepts but often asks you tough questions in time limit quizzes and heavy midterms. Those questions were never taught in class, neither in assignments nor in the textbook. The average class grade was 5.
She's really sweet and kind, but she's not a good math prof. Her exams are hard, but claims they are "fair". If I'm paying for a 2 hour lecture, at least give the class 2 hrs to complete the exams. You have to pass the final in order to pass the course, which is the biggest scam. If you pass the midterms, but the fail the final, well good luck
Hands down one of the sweetest professors here. She's really kind, caring and supportive, but her lectures are fast-paced so be prepared to have messy notes (I wrote everything). Her office hours is an efficient way to get help
Solid prof as long as you are willing to put in the effort to study in math. Lectures are straightforward but practice is a must in math.
MATH 1170 was great with Sonoko, very easy. Even gave us chocolate during Easter. Calc 1, however, was not so great but maybe I didnt practice enough. Either way, if you probably practice a lot, the class would probably be alright. But she does have a bit of an accent so if youre not good at deciphering accents, go to someone else.
Sonoko is a very nice person, but not the best teacher imo. Her tests are pretty difficult mainly due to the time constraints. On all tests, you'll be given 1 question/10 minutes, but each question will contain 2-3 subquestions so it can be tricky to manage your time. Accent and speed of speech make it hard to understand lectures at times.
I just finished my Math final yesterday. Comparing her quizzes, mid terms and final, final is way harder IMO. Basically you will need to do a lot of practice questions, like a lot. She is nice, she answers your questions with patience and makes sure you understand.
Don't let these reviews convince you! She is not a good teacher in the slightest, I had no idea what she was saying because her English is incoherent and accent is thick. I think you should be able to speak English in order to teach. Tough grader and midterms and finals are nothing like the textbook questions. Do not take this class!
Difficult class. She is caring and is accessible outside of class but her quizzes and exams are very difficult.
Sonoko is lovely! She really goes out of her way to make sure you understand the material, even held extra lectures on precalc review. Her English is fine despite what other reviewer say. Quizzes and tests are pretty average difficulty, so, obviously, you have to study to pass. Its math. Overall, great teacher, would take again.
Sonoko is a great person, her english is extremely comprehensible, the course is hard though - if i was to retake this course I would pre-read every chapter and be ready to study at least 10-12hrs/week the quizes are easier than the midterms, the final is hard try to practice midterms - and dont forget to do the practice finals! they help so much!
Ridicules students for asking questions during lectures. Would not recommend based on that alone
One of the worst professors I've had in my life. The lectures were uninformative, dull, and rude . The exams were unfair in what they tested. Just drop her course if you can
She's a nice person but her testing is way too difficult in comparison with the problems she covers during class. The exam she gave in my opinion was outright unfair
Sonoko's lectures and notes are alright; knowing the definitions and applying them are necessary to succeed in calc 2. Try not to ask too much questions, as it only hinders the lecture. Doing some of the suggested problems helped me ace the midterm
Weird lecture format. Does not answer questions during lectures. Not available outside of class for help. Her testing methods are questionable. Take with caution
She is unable to communicate effectively because of her accent, it presents challenges for students in understanding the material being taught since she goes at a fast pace it makes her lectures very difficult
She is not good professor. She cannot teach well
I took Calc1 a last spring, thought I'd take it again to raise my mark from a B+ to an A. Her lectures, exam 1, and many attempts at getting help on some questions or asking questions about some topics amounted to nothing I dropped her course. Her reviews show that she's a good instructor and she may be one, but from what I've experienced she isn't
Sonoko is an interesting professor to say the least. Her midterms and quizzes were very easy but the final exam for the course was incredibly difficult and did not follow the outline she gave us. I did great on her midterms and quizzes but failed her final due to her inability to properly prepare students. She still passed me. Take with caution
Nakano is a professor that may prove to be a challenge to understand and learn from due to her heavy accent and boring lectures. Midterms are extremely difficult as there are a small amount of questions compared to material that is taught as well as tight time constraints. You will have to pay for textbook and access to homework questions for marks
not worth it
Tough
Very tough course. This is the most incompetent instructor i have ever had in my academic journey. Heavy accent and her lectures do not help at all. Her content does not match the test and you have to pay $70 textbook for 5%, without it you cannot get an A+. She is very condescending, as she does makes fun of students asking questions.
Sonoko is knowledgable but a terrible teacher. She can be quite demeaning if you ask a question. She hands out weekly assignments and the questions are way more difficult than the midterm/final. A lot of self studying is needed. She also assigned 5% to online homework but you need the textbook for that. If you have a choice, take someone else.
I found out she's reteaching this course and must let you know she was a horrendous instructor. Constantly going off topic, not answering questions, not prepping us for exams. Take with caution
Nice but she had a very tough midterm exam. She made a mistake on one of the questions and was nice enough allowed us to have extra time
Not helpful when asking questions . I did poorly on midterm 1 and tried to see if she could help me during an office hours on my weakpoints in the course and give feedback and guidance to do good but she laughed at me for coming for help and made fun of me and the questions I was asking. Bad personal experience and poor attitude to student. Beware
Absolutely avoid this instructor by any means. Choosing her would absolutely brick your GPA. She doesn't give us any practice for the exam and her exam is really difficult (compared to another instructor in the same course number). The type of question that comes out in the exam is not even close to the question in homework and class notes.
she is the worst instructor. She does not prepare for midterm so, the average class is very low . She is not helpful because sometimes she will laugh at you when you raise questions. I am very stressed in her class because I cannot keep up with the lecture notes since she is very fast in terms of teaching. Midterm is very difficult. BEWARE, AVOID!
very fast paced teacher. Assignments and the work we did difficulty level is vast. Doesn't really explain the concepts well and majority of the class doesn't understand what she's saying and she just assumes we understands and moves on. Its more like she's doing the work and were just watching her with little explanation
Not answering questions when asked, rude when she answers. unavailable during exam scheduled office hour for help. show no compassion for student to help. avoid when possible
Her teaching style is simple, come to lecture and pay attention. If you don't understand you can ask but she just repeat herself in angry way. Assignments okay, hard question and easy question mixed. Tests hard but doable. Final hard but doable. If good with algebra and numbers take her, if not alot of people struggle. THICK ACCENT
She knoes her stuff but seems to have a hard time properly explaining difficult concepts to students who dont understand. I often found myself equally confused about a topic after asking her to clarify. The practice questions are much more difficult than the exams and because of that it prepares you wonderfully. She gives weekly homework.
Ahh good teacher according to me. If you have a bit knowledge you will do good. Never gets irritated even if you ask your doubts multiple times. you will definitely find difficulty to understand her accent in the starting but it's fun afterwards. Lectures are good ... easy and straightforward...... Overall She's good...
hints exam questions during lecture. Clear lectures with lots of examples. blank notes are provided but nothing is posted post-lecture(attendance is important). Uses a free online homework site. Also has weekly homework, about 5 questions. Offline assignments must be submitted in class. In the class before the exam, she outlines key topics tested.
She kicked me out of the class for no reasons
Avoid this professor! Reads slides, unhelpful, teaches useless material. 0/5. Do not take her course by any means. She looks down on you when you don't know the questions she is asking. She doesn't teach us how to apply the formula for each example and just uses the calculator. She is the FIRST professor I got who is so bad at teaching.
Heavy
Get prepared to study math
I feel that she only recites whatever is written in her book notes instead of giving a clear explanation regarding the concept which dosen't give us much choice than cramming up things.
Wouldn't recommend at all.
She is very unhelpful when it comes to questions and midterms. Attendance isn't graded but she won't help you out if you miss something in class or missed the lecture. Doesn't give practice midterms . Lectures are boring and unhelpful. Overall a 0/5 for me.
If you are planning to take any Maths Course for first time do not choose Sonoko as your instructor because she thinks that you know everything and if not you should have learnt that in the last course you taken in previous semesters.Notes are just blank sheets with a single definition. Not a good instructor for taking math for credits only.
Her accent was so bad. I did not understand what she was trying to say in class. The midterm questions did not reflect the materials that she taught in class. She taught materials really fast
This course seems like it's not her regular class. She teaches by reading from her books. When asked, she says that we should know more than her because we already have a business background. She's kind and sometimes gives extra time during quizzes. When asking via email, she gives fast responses during her office hour.
The lectures were incredibly boring. She wasn't helpful at all outsife of class. The worst part is that she never gives practice midtersm or finals. Avoid her at all costs. I don't know why she's still teaching when she never even seems like she wants to be there.
Please avoid at all costs. I didn't trust the bad ratings on here until I took her class myself. I can't believe she is even an instructor. Believe me, take another math course or don't take any at all if it's with her.
Avoid this prof at all costs. Nothing good will come out of taking her class, unless you already understand everything she's gonna teach you anyway. Her lectures are so boring and unhelpful. Her lecture slides are confusing. She doesn't give practice midterms or finals.
She's completely unhelpful and made me hate math
Shows no compassion whatsoever and lectures are so hard to understand. Will get irritated at students asking questions.
Reluctant to help in class and outside of class. Hard to understand anything she teaches and her accent is so thick
You must attend the lectures if you want to do well. Practice problems are also a must unless you have a good grasp of the context already. Her exams are fair but hard, so practice as many problems as possible.Overall her lecture notes are helpful and shes nice.
Taking a semester off is better than taking her as your instructor. If you like to do hours of math homework weekly, enjoy THE HEAVIEST ASIAN ACCENT EVER, and like to answer 6 HUGE math problems (each having 5 more sub-problems in them) within 1 hour in your midterm, I would definitely suggest her! All the best and welcome to hell!
No practice midterms, but provides a practice final to have students find questions in there to study for midterms. Does not post notes online, and is unwilling to share them if you miss any + has an accent. Course is probably doable if you do the textbook homework as midterms are manageable.
do not take this course unless you love doing hours of web homework each week.
I would not recommend you take this course. If you're sick or away the only way you're going to be able to get notes is by going to see her during office hours make that make sense?? I'm literally paying for this course. Also 20 questions for each section of each chapter of webwork. Hard accent, over explains everything goodluck. dont take this bs
Sonoko is a decent instructor. She is very caring about her students. Her marking is fair, but the exams are difficult. Also, the workload is very heavy, with weekly hand-in assignments and tons of online assignments. All you need to do is practice the questions from the textbook and go to her office hours if needed.
premade notes only digital so print them all out before hand if you like having things in one place. She has a heavy accent and an even heavier workload, multiple web assignments and one assignment per week as like a review of what you learned in the week. Also be prepared to read the textbook and do the questions in it.
Math 1175 was hard, as I am not a math person. Her accent is a bit strong, so sometimes it's hard to understand. Her midterms and finals are hard; you need to put a lot of time and effort to do well
She has an accent but as a native English speaker I didn't struggle to understand her, non native speakers may struggle You had to do a lot of practice questions and do all the assignments but it's math! And her lectures were good and I appreciated the amount of problems she did in class. She welcomed questions in class and was happy to help.
guys, don't even bother taking her class. very condescending and very unhelpful. take the course in the summer instead with pichmony! trust me
