Sonya is by far the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had! She is super helpful and goes out of her way to get to know you. Her knowledge is incredible and you can definitely notice how passionate she is about science. She makes Chem fun and applies it to real world issues, which makes it so much more fun. Never understood chem better! Love her!!
This class was amazing. There are weekly low risk group quizzes and online concept checks. I invested a lot of time in this class and learned a lot! With all the preparation (quizzes, in-class assignments, concept checks) I hardly have to cram for the exams, which are quite fair. Ms. Doucette is a great instructor; take the class!
I usually despise chemistry but sonya has such a passion for it that i actually started to enjoy it! she truly cares about her students doing well. She is very clear with her expectations for exams and very clear in her explanations of the material as well. best teacher i've had at bellevue, by far! absolutley reccomend her, you wont regret it!
Sonya is the BEST Chem teacher!Nice/approachable.2 online concept chks due/wk ensures you keep up with readings.Quizzes/exams long/hard. Provides weekly learning objectives (helps you focus on what to study).Thorough/concise slides.Lots of extra credit.Easy labs (no notebook).Keep up w/reading, review slides, do practice problems & you'll get an A.
Horrible. She had a passion for it but made the tests and assignments too hard for anyone to get better than a B, if that!
Sonya great and awesome professor, a lot of extra credits and easy tests. She helps a lot and provide great videos.
Class is like a hybrid class has TONS of busywork and overshadows other I have took at the same time. Can be moody when you ask her questions and hurries though. Several times, she looked at our work says you're right but then we get graded wrong. She asks for midquarter feedback typed, and only defends herself Lots of work for an A. GL!
Best teacher at Bellevue College! I used to hate chemistry, but I learned so much about how chemistry relates to the world. I'm going to major in it now! She's super supportive, everything you do in the class is worthwhile, and as long as you do the work it is an easy grade. Exams are challenging, but fair. Love her!!
Easiest teacher at BC. Tons of extra credit and tests are very easy. If you want an easy A this is for you.
Great class. Learned a ton, AND the path to a good grade was clear. Just do the work. Learning objectives with every week are a good study guide. she makes you do online quizzes on textbook readings before class - at first I hated these, but they really make you read the book, retain concepts better, and prepare for class. She made learning easy!!
Outstanding professor. She provides detailed powerpoint lectures that are easy to follow. Her grading criteria is very fair, and clear. There are many factors toward one's grade: Labs, online and Mastering Chem hw, weekly in class assignments, weekly quizzes with random partner, and exams. Her exams are fair. An excellent choice for Chem.
Good class. Above average Not very hard
This is a well-organized class. Prof. Doucette is clear with grading criteria, due dates, etc. She's approachable and won't hesitate to help students, provided they ask for it. Even though class attendance isn't mandatory, you'll get docked for missed class activities so you need to come anyway ps theres a lot of reading but its manageable
Very clear assignments, clear expectations, and helpful when trouble arises. Allows discretionary "late passes," because we're adults and things happen. Found the activities interesting but not always challenging enough. Would take again in a heartbeat.
Sonya gives outstanding powerpoint lectures in a way that anyone in the class can learn the material. Her exams are fair. She has high standards for her students, particularly with labs, pre, post, notebook, etc. It is not too difficult to keep up with the course. If you do, you will learn a lot and develop excellent study habits.
Sonya gives so much work and her exams are very hard. She is a great teacher and really cares about her students, but the work load and time commitment she expected from us was too much. If you want an A in her class, you really have to work for it. She does give Extra Credit though, and she is always happy to help you if you are struggling.
If you can devote all your time to this class she's a good professor. Otherwise be cautious, something is due nearly every day and it can be difficult to keep up with if you have other courses or extracurricular activities. Lectures are easy to follow and she is more prepared than most professors, but homework is plentiful and her tests are long.
Dr. Doucette takes a different approach to teaching which she explains in the beginning of the quarter. Rather than lecturing through all material, you are responsible for most of the learning individually through textbook reading and guiding homework questions. Lectures are to clarify anything from the reading. Tough but doable. You'll learn a lot
She gives out heavy lecture time and will test you way beyond that on the quiz, exam. Not much calculation (as how a traditional Chemistry should be) will be tested, mostly long and tricky definition. She took lots of points off your lab report for little tiny mistakes. Not recommended at all!
This is an incredibly tough class. Sonya lays out what you need to learn very methodically which makes it easier. I am usually an A student and I came out with a B+ in this class after a lot of work. She is a very tough grader but she is very fair (holds everyone to the same standard). Don't take this class with other hard classes.
If you invest LOTS OF TIME for this course, she will be the best choice. Expect you to know every little thing from the lectures and the book. You need to read the book and do modules before going to class to be able to catch up her lessons. Strict on labs and will deduce points on small mistakes if you choose to grade in details. Lots of EC.
Sonya was a great instructor and was extremely organized. She grades tough though so make sure to triple check your work before turning it in. Before lecture, she would have these modules due which required you to read the book and answer questions before lecture. Then, she would go over the questions as she lectured. This was very helpful.
This is the most organized and intricate online class I've ever taken, that being said it was also extremely tedious. I definitely have retained a lot of info and am very inspired to take action, but there was just a LOT. As long as you do the work and readings you'll be fine, just be prepared to spend more time on this than a traditional class.
Her homework styles can be a little confusing but overall its super doable and enjoyable class. She is super friendly and super easy to talk to. She picks out homework problems and puts them in the exams.
Professor Doucette makes A LOT of mistakes while grading exams, quizzes, and labs. When you are handed back graded works, review them carefully to ensure you receive the grade that you have earned. For an A in her class you need at least 95% of the total points. Do as many "End of Chapter Questions" as possible and review her p. point slides!!!
The teacher gives so many questions on one assignment which is worth 10 points. The teacher gives easy discussions.
Professor Doucette is a very prepared teacher, there are regular assignments that are all uploaded the very first day of the quarter and she is available to meet in person and responds to messages quickly. There is a lot of work in this course, typically five assignments a week including two quizzes and a research paper due at the end of the course
Weekly agenda so far: 2-3 open book/note quizzes, discussion/response posts w/multiple MLA sources; 2-3 assignments w/ convoluted questions that aren't easily sourced from materials provided. Lots of work for little credit. Also, 6 pg paper on why we support a damaging effect on the oceans... Helpful & smart prof but hard for 100 level course
Sonya is very passionate about oceanography which is awesome except I felt like this class was really heavy for a 100 level class and for being online. The homework we received could be confusing and sometimes not explained well. Overall it takes a lot of effort but you will learn a lot if you take this class.
Sonya's lectures were very clear and her explanations were good. Every week we had to read a few sections from the textbook and answer module questions. At first it felt like a lot of work, but it was actually really helpful. I felt like I learned a lot in this class. She's a kind person and was always willing to help. I recommend taking her!
Excellent prof! Definitely recommend. Very organized. Lectures are really helpful and she is good with answering questions. Really kind and genuinely wants you to succeed. She is helpful during office hours and over email. Though this class is not particularly difficult, here are a lot of things to keep track of. Weekly modules, labs, quizzes, etc.
She's very sweet and cares for her students but she's a tough grader. This class was very time consuming, and tests were challenging as well. Prepare for lots of work. Do not take it if your schedule is busy.
There were multiple online quizzes, in class quizzes, pre-lab assignments, and a few main tests. She makes some YouTube videos that relate to the material being learned and they're quite helpful.
This class was really hard, but Sonya was a decent teacher. There were reading quizzes before lecture days so you had to read the textbook. Her lectures were good and explained the textbook well. However, her tests were really hard and she never gave answers to the practice tests which was weird. She gave out a lot of extra credit.
What other people have said is accurate re: her class and teaching style. I just want to mention that she does not maintain professional boundaries (moody and rude), has held things against students all quarter and it shows, and does not deal with confrontation well AT ALL. You will learn the material, but you will have to bear her emotional load.
There are quizzes twice a week for online but each quiz you get 2x to try it again. The assignments are tedious and a lot of work. Also lots of reading but the book is okay, not super boring. There is a research assignment that was a pain to do and did not like.
Sonya is a teacher that has some really good qualities and some really bad ones. Her labs are incredibly hard and she is very unhelpful and sometimes downright cold when asking for help during labs. She is the type of teacher who prides herself on how many people fail her class instead of how many do well, but her lectures are very helpful.
really fun class. an easy cooking class. good lab class if you would like to learn science behind cooking.
Sonya is your best choice to take in chemistry if you don't test well. These reviews are pretty outdated because now she gives 5 quizzes, they are only 7 questions long and she drops one of them. And she gives enough EC so that you have enough to cover a second test. She is a very fair grader would defiantly take again.
Professor Doucette is one of the best professors that I've had. She tries to fully answer all the questions asked & gives examples as well. She is available for an hour after lectures to answer lingering questions. For tests, she gives you three days to complete and worth 20 points. The quiz is fair as long as you do the practice and study.
I took Chemistry 110 during Winter Quarter. There are readings involved for each week's assignments, and assignments based around cooking are mandatory. Dr. Sonya Doucette is such a kind person and is always willing to help students whenever possible. Understanding the material is the key to succeeding and passing this course!
She is an easy grader, and she helped me pick out my topic for the final research paper. There is a lot of work that is due in a short amount of time, but if you don't procrastinate, you will be fine. Quizzes have no time limit and two attempts. Discussions are long, but are graded easy. I would definitely take another one of her classes!
I loved taking chemistry with Sonya in the fall, she is so caring, and shes is the only chemistry teacher that didnt make me feel stupid for not understanding, she always answered all my questions, she is very nice, and the amount of work in that class is not a lot, and do the extra credit.
Prof. Doucette is an amazing professor. She has a a unique personality. Shes very supportive and caring. Shes a fair grader. Shes also very easy to communicate with outside of class. She is helpful in helping you understand anything you have trouble with in the course material. I wish I was able to take another chemistry course with her.
I took Sonya's class in Fall 2020. As it was my first online class and of RS, I didn't know what to expect, but Sonya made all of the material easier to understand with her videos and mini quizzes. There was lots of extra credit opportunity, but the best part of the class was the research project. Sonya is such an awesome research mentor as well!
Genuinely cares about student success and willingness to learn. She is a wonderful human who takes time to understand her students' concerns. Def would recommend taking her class.
Took env. oceanography with her last spring. It was life-changing. She really pushed us to critically examine systems in our world that we normally take for granted. The material she provided was so inspiring. The final paper really pushed me to look at an environmental issue from the view of industry. A real challenge, but I learned so much!
Dr. Doucette is dedicated to your learning and will do whatever it takes to support you. She gives really detailed feedback, grades quickly, and cares a lot about her students. There is a really cool quarter-long research project, no finals, 5 quizzes, and a lot of group work. If you can put in the work and want to learn, this is the class for you.
One of the most interesting classes I have taken and I want to pursue science because of it. Be prepared to read and write quite a bit but most of all, learn! This course is not the traditional "cars are bad for the environment" and gives you a new perspective on climate change. Dr. Doucette is a detailed grader so always read rubrics carefully.
Sonya believes in practice over testing, so there are no comprehensive exams. You must expect lots of hw, especially group work. You definitely need to try hard to succeed, but Sonya goes out of her way to help her students. She has lots of office hours, and gives great explanations. Her passion for climate justice was also really inspiring.
Wonderful professor! Her online class is super organized. She has great lectures and clear expectations. Makes her material interesting to learn. She is very caring, always willing to listen to students. I would definitely take her for every Chem class.
Offers opportunities to catch up on homework if you missed a reading, and incorporate real world contemporary world problems into lecture material
I really think she sparked a new love for chemistry in me after my horrendous experience in AP Chem, she incorporates the real world into your material, and has a genuine passion to make sure each of her students leave her lectures learning something new. Be careful with quizzes and large assignments though as she is very specific with her rubric.
first chem class at my first quarter of running start, this professor definitely didn't make it easy. Grade wise wasn't too bad as she distributed well so that its not test/quiz dependent. It really stressed me out n was too fast paced,I am taking chem 162 with a different prof n the pace is much better. Would have failed if i didn't have a good grp
Her overall course was fine but I struggled with getting good grades for the quizzes. She does provide a study guide for learning objectives but a lot of the questions are concept-based which requires a lot more understanding than just being able to do practice problems. Requires a lot of time out of class that you need to study on your own.
Dr. Doucette is a wonderful, caring professor, but she makes you work. Quizzes are straightforward. Labs are pretty messy. Exams aren't easy, but you'll do fine if you read, attend lecture, and do the Mastering Chemistry problems. Extra credit helps a lot. She plasters her office hours all over and responds to Canvas messages.
Dr. Doucette is very kind and will help you as much as you need it. I learned so much in this course and feel like I actually get chemistry now! I might major in chemistry. jk. I did learn a ton though. As long as you attend lecture and do the practice problems she suggests, you will do fine.
Professor Douchette was incredible! She goes above an beyond to set you up for success if you speak up for your needs. Although your grade will depend on your group, she makes sure that things work out for you. Quizzes can be challenging but if you go to office hours theres no way you will fail.
Great professor! I really enjoyed her quarterly project. She also taught really well, for an online course. I really think she would be even better in person. Make sure to practice for quizzes, they are very thorough and you won't do good if you don't practice. She works through problems which really really helps in Chemistry. Take Her!
super nice professor, always available for office hours. it's only been 2 weeks and i've only taken one quiz yet, but so far, she's one of the best professors i've had. there is a lot of homework though, but i think it is expected for a chemistry class.
Empowering, engaging, and supportive - highly recommend! Her passion for addressing climate change and social justice is inspiring. She is very caring, a clear communicator, organized, and brings tons of relevance with applications beyond the lab and classroom. You will have plenty of tools to succeed and learn a lot. Take her class!
Dr. Doucette was an amazing professor. This was the first in-person science course I had taken at BC and it was honestly pretty hard but she was always accessible outside of class and gave many extra credit opportunities. This is not an easy A class but if you apply yourself she will be able to help you out and you will do well.
She's very nice and encourages you to ask questions when you don't understand something. It's inspiring to see how much she cares about climate change. There is a quarterly research project, which was very interesting. She also sometimes crack jokes which can be kinda funny.
Very caring and accessible professor. There's lots of reading and homework, but that's expected of a chemistry course. The class is well paced. There's a research project.
Sonya has an infinite amount of resources for you to learn. She's always willing to help, and all her homework and assignments are there to make you understand. If you want to take the class to really learn chemistry she is there to help. Although the class may seem like there are a lot of assignments, they are all tools that helped me so much.
Dr. Doucette was an amazing professor. The class wasn't easy, but as long as you asked questions and did the necessary amount of work, you would be fine. There was a big research project that took up the entire quarter, but if you do a little work each week, it isn't a big deal.
Amazing professor, connected to real-world issues, offered a lot of extra credit, 5 quizzes and 1 final exam. I didn't study much and my grades reflected that, but the extra credit helped a lot. She will make time to help you, her office hours helped a lot. Has a quarter-long research project, can be hard if you don't like being in group projects.
Dr. Doucette is a very nice professor. Lots of extra credit opportunities and you get 5 late passes. Main part of the class is a quarter-long group research project with a partner. Lots of homework but that is to be expected with a chemistry class. You also get to make a full cheat sheet front and back for the final. Definitely recommend her!
She is a lot "extra" in the sense that she goes into a lot of tangents within the field for chem 161. Like making you watch a documentary during lab time instead of doing the lab what a waste. Just a terrible experince. Ruined my 4.0 as a CS major no it wasn't calc 3 or some hard CS class it was an introductory chem class taught by this professor.
Best science class I've taken! I went into this class scared of chemistry, but I actually understand it now. Lots of support and other class stuff to help you learn. She is always available for help outside of class and will spend her whole office hour with you if you need help.
Dr.Doucette was an amazing professor, she made the course fun and gave importance to the topics we would learn by connecting them to real-world issues. Lots of work but she is very helpful, she offers lots of extra credit and lets you drop a quiz score. I definitely recommend Dr.Doucette to everyone that has to take chem161.
I took CHEM161 with her it was alooootttttt of homework and she was very picky and didn't get a good grade .
Super awful and not understanding at all. i had to leave town for a few weeks and she wouldn't let me make up the labs another day, she said she was "too busy" to help me out and she said i need to drop the class. this is annoying because my brother took a chem class with another professor and they were completely fine with rescheduling the lab.
Dr. Doucette is probably the best science teacher I've ever had. The way she sets up the class is ideal for asking questions and understanding content. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and is very clear about assignment expectations and homework options. I would gladly take any class she taught.
The class itself is hard so dont leave things to the last minute. The class is very heavy in material so you study alot. Try to get ahead. Fill out the study guides and practice as much as you can. She drops the worst lab and quiz (5 quizzes) and gives so much extra credit! She tries to connect things to the real world to help you understand
Dr. Doucette were always being nice and helpful to us and provided valuable suggestions for our research projects. The lab segments were elucidated with clarity; her demonstrated each step before the beginning of the lab, making complex experiments appear straightforward. I believe anyone would get a good grade with her if they actually tried.
She is helpful during office hours but is very confusing during lab sessions. Doesn't explain content very well and quizzes in class are not similar to what we learn in lecture
Overall not a kind teacher. If you talk to her about your grade she gets mad and doesnt like to be wrong. Many times she would say "I dont know" to questions asked on labs. Tough grader and takes points off for mini mistakes. Has quizzes every week. Labs are graded very harshly and are 35% of the grade.
Doesn't explain content very well and quizzes in class are not similar to what we learn in lecture. Is not understanding of other people's situations and does not help you make up work. Always said "shes busy" to help during class. Would not answer questions clearly and often said I dont know.
Do not be fooled by old ratings, she took a break from teaching and did not come back as her best at all. She doesn't explain content well & quizzes in class are not the same as the lecture. You have to use the textbook for quiz help and she doesnt tell us that. Lectures are boring and long. Not an understanding teacher & does not like to be wrong
I found Sonya Doucette to be one of the most knowledgeable Chemistry professors I have ever had. This class would have been fantastic in person, but unfortunately, the was course online. Is a hard grader but does care about her students. I feel like there is a disconnect between her perception of our understanding and our actual understanding.
Sonya works hard to make sure you're actively learning. Do the suggested practice problems she gives you and do not fall behind as there is a quiz every week. Labs are toughly graded so be sure to be diligent with your wording and sig-fig calculations. Lots of extra credit opportunities to save your grade, and she drops lowest quiz and lab.
Sonya is a great professor but she gives a ton of work. She pushes you to learn through having quizzes every week before lab. Falling behind is not allowed in this class as the quizzes will punish you. Though she drops lowest quiz and lab. Missing more than one lab isnt allowed. Do the suggested practice problems she gives and you'll be fine
Professor Doucette is very knowledgeable on chemistry. The course work was pretty heavy and the labs were graded harshly. She didn't have a midterm and instead quizzes every lab with a final that was only worth 7% of your overall grade. It's not hard to get an A if you're good at the writing post labs.
Worst prof I have ever met
If you are good at writting and so about chemistry, you can take it. If you don't, do not take. She gives you a lot of stress
If you want to regret, take her
Don't take her.Terrible lecturer, literally answers with "idk" for most student questions, seems to care more about her research project than teaching us chemistry (reflected in how half of our assigns relate to it), & always has an excuse in store when she solves problems wrong and gets corrected by a student (happens vry often). Save your sanity
The course is taught with a pointless research project that wastes lab time. Grades significant figures on labs like you shot her dog and doesn't give good feedback. Quizzes don't relate to what you learn. She's unorganized and very inaccessible if you have a tight schedule, both in and outside of class, and can't answer the most basic questions.
