Best teacher ever. Funny guy.
Very funny, easy teacher, and lets class out early all the time. If you take him make sure you got good ears, he talks very soft. High Recommended!
he's cool... excellent in explaining things... at first it was hard for me to understand his accent, but u get used to it... he's an easy grader... tests are easy too... :)
hard to take notes, but easy to get a B
When he lectures, it's like he's talking to himself. Tests are not related to lecture materials. Very hard to get A. Sometimes, he thought we laughed at his jokes, actually, we were laughing at him!
He's not bad at all if you take notes and just go through them before the exams. I liked him.
he's nice teacher. easy grader. he writes more than other aas teachers such as rooks although rooks is cool too
THIS GUYS ROCKS!!! HE IS A GREAT TEACHER AND HE EXPLAINS THINGS THOROUGHLY!
Pretty easy going. Some lectures not related to his test. Hard to get an A but can easily pull a B. He normally gives a good review before every exam.
this guy is good! hard to understand but hella easy!! Grade very easy. If u do the essay, and get the points u get an A. Funny guy and hella good!!!
great guy. funny. if you take really good notes you done need to read the book! just write your essays formally (no "I" and stuff like that).
Choi is a great teacher/lecturer. Entertaining guy who is off topics at times, but you can learn what is needed from him.
Funny guy. He's actually entertaining during lecture, and isn't anal. Pretty easy grader. Overall, makes AAS bearable. Would take his other classes.
He is awesome! On the essay part just write the answer down and don't BS it. If your close to the right answer he'll give u the points.
Fun lectures.
Easy teacher. Grades easy n sometimes hard to understand on lectures. No text require to pass the class, just go to clas n take notes.
Very easy-going, nice, adn helpful. His lectures are interesting and funny. He is sort of soft-spoken so sit in front of class. He grades fairly easy. Exams are 30 multiple choice questions and 5 short answer questions. Offers lots of extra credit.
Lectures ok, need to pay attention & respond to his questions, otherwise he'll get really mad. Grades fair. Doesn't like to answer students' questions.
his lectures are somewhat interesting. kinda funny when he goes off topic. cracks some jokes here and there. grades fairly on content and effort. just show up to class and take good notes.
He is an alright teacher. He needs to speak more clearly and pronunciation. but the lectures are alright and sorta boring but its ok.
He is very boring! Most of the time I can barely even understand him b/c he has a strong accent! Sometimes he also goes off topic and when he cracks jokes, its actually not funny...
Damn this **** is hella hard to understand. I hate the class and I recommend no one to take it if you do drop the class within the first 2 wks. because the class sucks. this fool cant talk english at all. all the exams are in essays form. I hate Choi.
He easy going, but unclear in his lectures. Still, a good teacher to have, especailly if your lazy.
Just go to class and take notes. His exams are based on the lectures, no trick questions whatsoever. He's such an easy teacher, gives u partial credit for answering exam questions. Unlike other teachers, who doesn't even give partial points on exam questions. Choi is very nice.
very funny guy. fun lectures because he uses funny jokes. Clarity? Only because he has an acent, so it's hard to understand him sometimes, besides that. he's good. a easy grader. i would say a good teacher too, aside from the fact that he's easy.
The guy is ****ing hilarious. When he started talking about living in New York, I couldn't stop laughing. The guy is a great Lecturer (Franks is better IMO) He grades hard on his essay though. And to whoever pulled the fire alarm on test day: You rock.
Choi is freakin hilarious. He tells some stories and tells random stories and facts. He's a pretty easy grader. He gave us study guides for the exams and he goes over it. Never had to read the text just take notes. Thanks you to who ever pulled the fire alarm!
This guy is fun and teaches an easy class. He is CRUNK!
Guy is funny with some lame jokes. Grades really easy. Hard to understand his lectures though.
Choi's friggin hilarious, he gets off-track some of the time and starts getting into some stuff, but I think he's funny, I was starting to think he smoked pot. Anyway, he grades fairly easy on his essays. Sit close to the front, pay attention, and make sure you take notes.
Interesting & humorous lectures. He's very lenient on grading. Pray that he grades your tests.
Choi got some lame jokes and is easy isnt the most open-minded individual the first thing he asked in class is "who's chinese who's japanese?" less than 20 raised their hands. He criticize their race sometimes because of prior Korean colonization, what a historian. Btw hes a psych major not history.
Good teacher. He likes Pikachu and Digimon. Take him.
when i took 33A i got a C in his class n i did not lyk him very much but afte took 33B i found out tha hez a very funny guy n if u figure out all the vocab terms on the review sheet (from textbook) n pay attention in the class n take notes, u'll be able to get out of tha class by an A, b/c itz wut i got in sprn 2005!
funny teacher, easy on tests cuz he gives multiple choice or T/F. sometimes its hard to hear what he says cuz of his accent, but yea, he's easy. he gives short lectures sometimes, too. shorter than Rooks.
Dr. Choi is SUPER EASY. Made syllabus up as he went along, which sounds kinda scary but ended up being very good. Grade was based on about 6 essays and one super easy quiz. Final was take home essay. Tells funny stories. Asian accent. Passionate about subject and made lectures interesting. Offers tons of super easy extra credit! Got an A+!
I said it before and i'll say it again: Choi is the ****ing man.
Choi is cool. Fair grader, his tests are not too difficult and plus he's funny. good teacher...
Very funny teacher. Interesting to learn from and a very easy grader. As long as your paper is semi on topic and the minimum amount you'll easily get a B. Tests are also very easy.
Very entertaining, makes history fun. Shares stories that relate to the topic, or get off topic about something interesting. Easy grader, show up for class and you're guarenteed a B.
Makes history fun, and also a fairly easy grader.
HE LOOKS INTIMIDATING AND HARD BUT YOU'RE IN FOR A SURPRISE. HES FUNNY AND GRADES VERY GENEROUSLY. LOOKS FOR THING TO GIVE YOU POINTS FOR RATHER THAN TAKE THEM AWAY. BIGGEST FLAW IS THAT YOU DONT REALLY LEARN MUCH IN CLASS SO YOU HAVE TO GO BACK AND READ THE BOOK.
I'm not impressed with his teaching or personality. He doesn't follow the syllabus! For a while, he was adding a written assignment every time we were in class! It stopped for a while, but then he did it again. Then he changed the due date for the one major paper, making it due in 3 weeks rather than 5. I'd avoid him if you can.
if u dont like to read and write, dont take this class. But if u do, u can learn a lot. Not an easy class like i was expecting. lot of reading and writing. lot of work but overall good exp.
this teacher rocks! he gives easy points and grades really easily. he makes history fun!
Lots of reading and criticism. If you do the work, you'll have a blast in the class! He makes a dull subject very interesting and fun.
This class is pretty boring but I still earned a B+ for sleeping in the class! He is a very easy grader on tests and essays. This class I didn't even need to buy a book to waste money. Just listen to his lecture and you'll do fine.
Dr. Choi is very fair. The class demands a lot of writing, but most of it is just summarizing and stating your own opinions. The midterm and the final were not difficult and the class was very interesting. He tells some funny jokes too. Nice guy. Very unmaterialistic.
lecture notes are outlined so make sure you keep up with what he's saying. covers some of the topics in reading but gives you info you need on exams. interesting story teller and very big on respect.
He's the one to took for any AAS class. He's the most fair, least boring, and gives good handouts. He'll also cut you the most breaks compared to the rest. Yamato and Franks are very unforgiving. That said, don't bother taking AAS unless its with Choi or expect headache (avoid the Yamato+Franks combo!)
highly recommended, love this teacher, fair, fun lectures, easy grading, one of the best teachers at sjsu
very soft spoken professor. Funny and laid back. Follow his instruction and you will get a B at least. Choi and Frank is the best combo for AAS.
I was very disappointed in this class. Though the work was easy I learned nothing from it. I would have rather taken a more difficult 100W class that actually taught me something. He wasn't very helpful or responsive if you had questions.
Choi tends to go off topic with his lectures. Jokes a lot in class. He gives you full credit on the essay questions of the exams, but you have to do well on the multiple choice to earn an A. His tests were easy though, and he's very lenient. Reading assingments are completely unescessary if you attend the lectures regularly.
The class is purely lectures, but outside reading is required. His lectures are really interesting even though he goes off topic sometimes. The off-topic stuff is actually pretty interesting still. The way he lectures is also organized so it's easy to take notes. I enjoy listening to his lectures and he's a funny guy.
This class requires that you go to the lectures to do well. You can not go, but you better do every single reading and know a lot about history. There are two papers (3-5pgs in length), class participation exercises, 2 midterms, and a final. There is a lot of material and he doesn't give a study, so studying is so sort of stressful. Good class.
He tends to go off on strange tangents during lectures. It's amusing so it's not that bad. He's a pretty easy teacher, easy grader and his assignments are usually a credit/no credit system. He has a mildly strong accent and I had a hard time staying awake for his lectures. That's just me though.
Easy grader!!! And he always talks about some really strange topics. His lectures suck, but he grades easy anyway. So it doesn't really matter.
Choi's accent makes him hard to understand. Lectures stray off topic, but not for too long. I took franks/choi, and they both outlined what would be on the midterm and finals the week before. HE GRADES SOOOOOO EASY. I would recommend the franks/choi combo for AAS A/B.
Another teacher who could have taught his entire class in two periods. Waste of time and money. Overall a good 3 hours of information. SJSU needs to cut the fat like this out of the class schedule. He wasted a lot of time for only 1 class a week. Globalization. Learn it. Low tech. Want more for the money spent on this class. Filler bullsht.
Professor Choi is a good guy. He is an easy grader and most of all his class notes are very organized, so its easy to study for tests. He is easy to approach and is an understanding guy. Just make sure you notify him ahead of time then everything will be fine.
He is really rude and disrespectful; he has very bad attitudes! His grading is based on his feelings, not on the quality of your work. Just take another teacher if you want to learn the materials and earn good grades. If you take him, just don't sleep in class!
His lectures are very boring and hard to follow due to his thick accent. Just read the texts if you plan to be in his class. By the way, his review for midterms do not help at all. The best thing to do is take AAS 33A & 33B with another instructor.
choi is an easy grader. For his essay, you need to have 3 main things that you can expand on to get an A. For his tests, you do not need to be detailed but you need to show that you learned the concept of what he taught. Write something on a question even though you don't know anything about it you might actually get a credit!
Very boring and goes off tangent all the time. Readings is meaningless and midterms are full of memorizations!!! Preferrably, take another instructor to learn materials and get "A" !!!
He acts like we all have exceptional memory .. and that if we read his books .. we should know the answers to the questions. If you ask him for help, he says "If you read the book, you should know". He's not passionate about educating students, he's passionate about anthropology. Students are a nuisance to him. RUDE and MEAN! He's not understanding
Choi's test questions are confusing, unclear, and extemely detail-oriented for the amount of reading that is required. Be prepared for such gems as: How many camels did so-and-so's mother need to sell in order to divorce her 16th husband?. . ." Do I care? What does this have to do with anthropology? On a positive note, some of the reading is great.
He's extremely confusing when it comes to essays and midterms. His lecture is useless and out of random thoughts based on the power point slides from the authors. His approach toward students is very disrespectful; he does not like to answer students' questions nor does he addresses students' concerns! You'll regret taking his class!!!
HARD! b/c half the time he maked up something for the students to do, like research paper! along with 2 mids and finals, 3 books, 2 book reviews, presentaion, class participation w/c you have to write essays! All of these in 12 class meets. No careful planning for the class, he was lazy, liked leaving early so he can give u HWs (more essays). Sad..
You'll regret taking any of his class. He shouldn't be an instructor of anything being so lazy stealing his hourly pay as he leaves early so he can keep giving students take home HW. He was just really bad overall. Fire him SJSU! Waste of the students' fees. I can't express how BAD he was. Just RUDE and dislikes educating students. Loves giving Cs
Has a thick accent but a great teacher. Lectures are straight from power point and clear. Easy grader and understand responds to e-mails asap and fun!
He's not a bad professor overall and is pretty easy but in terms of essays he needs to spend more time in clarifying what he wants. Unless you go up to him and ask questions you won't know what he expects.
Attend class, do the readings and you'll do fine. Tests multiple choice and essay. Essay is easy if you attend class, multiple choice is harder but all from the readings. Overall hes a nice teacher, can be hard to understand at times though.
Goes off the track on talking about his life. Has a trend of talking about certain subjects. Very helpful with writing essays.
he is a little hard to understand, and he goes off topic a lot... take the notes from the slides will help you study for the tests, must got class pretty much as much as possible because the most the notes are on the notes
Choi is a very funny and interesting teacher to have for this class. His lectures covers more than what is needed for the test. Pay attention, take notes, and review them. If you're looking for a good teacher for AAS, Choi should be your choice.
GR8 TEACHER! he is really funny. i really enjoyed going to lecture bc his lectures were clear and he speaks in way that makes u want to hear more. brings up interesting topics. u get used to the accent. pwerpoints are okay, he goes fast. just listen and that will be all u need. comes off tough but is an easy grader.TAKE HIS CLASS!
Awesome! He's really funny and laid back. He does get sidetracked, but at least it's interesting when he does. Although he has an accent, it's not too hard to understand if you're actually listening to him. Study guides are given for the midterms, so just study those! I only used the books when I was trying to find answers for the midterm.
He is a little unorganized as a lecturer. He tends to ramble and you have to listen to him b/c he doesn't have notes. Must take good notes, but VERY easy teacher. A couple essays, but he is a very easy grader. The tests are essay questions, but he told us what was on it and very nice grader. He has an intersting personality. class is boring.
Choi does not speak English fluently so its going to be a huge challenge if he isnt using any powerpoint notes. He tries to punish the people who dont show up by assigning in-class activities. His exams are Half Multiple Choice, Half Long Essays. His lectures rarely help(too general)!
Textbooks are only used to help with essays, buy them to do your essay then return them. Choi's lectures are really boring! He also grades hard on essays but easy on midterms.
Had this professor for AAS33B, pretty easy, but he was a harder grader than Prof. Berney. Attendance is mandatory because they both assign little assignments randomly in class for participation points. And they randomly gave out extra credit points.
Hard to understand. Wonders off during lectures. Grades hard on papers and exams. He is inconsistent with what he says, especially if you want to reschedule an exam. Pointless paying attention in class, but extra credit and classwork gets handed out randomly, so it's important to attend. Try to avoid taking this teacher.
Prof. Choi tries to be funny. Sometimes he is and other times the class is quiet. He grades hard on the papers, but fair on the exams. The exams are pretty simple since he gives a study guide. 2 midterms, 1 final. 2 papers. I don't like the new format though, it's harder to get an A.
Very poor teacher. Last semester he gave the entire class a 16/30 on average on the only essay he graded. This is not an exaggeration, he announced that was the class average. He tends to ramble off topic and smother the class in his own political views. When the class found out the other teacher was grading the final, they broke into applause.
I feel like he grades really hard on essays and he is really unfair with my condition of not being a good writer. I got a B- on my last essay, but my friends did much horrible on theirs. I will try to steer clear of this guy.
Good class, always learned somthing new everyday. Just go to class listen to all the lectures and you will not have to read the textbook for information. Choi's test are harder than the rest of the AAS teachers.
My teacher combo was Choi/Do. I definitely preferred the latter. Choi is incredibly incomprehensible and tends to preach about his own opinions and tends to go off-topic quite often. A hard grader as well. I'm a good essay writer but I have gotten Cs and Bs on the essays. He's difficult to communicate with as well. I suggest avoiding this teacher.
Although many people say he's a hard grader, I honestly think he's the easiest. As long as you listen to his lectures and write responses based on what he says, he'll give you an A on the essays. And he's the only teacher that really gives you a study guide for the exams, which makes studying for them even easier. He's really funny too =)
Hard grader when it came to essays and tests, but allowed us to fix mistakes on essays to get some extra credit. Went off topic a lot, but it kept me entertained. If I had a choice between Choi and another teacher, if you're looking for an easy grader, I'd pick another teacher. Overall, was an okay experience.
HE KNOWS HISTORY its like sitting at grandpas feet to hear a story 4 the entire period He talks right off the top of his head makes hilarious jokes, hes extremely smart & smooth, 1 topic flows perfectly into the next, hes never unprepared or unfair, as long as u come to every lecture & listen u never have to open a book. I got an A in both 33A&33B
Choi is a poor lecturer and as a previous reviewer mentioned, he inserts his opinion into lecture all to often. He grades papers unfairly and his ecams are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. Why anyone would grant this man a PhD is beyond me.
Professor made lectures interesting. He is a fair grader and bases most of his exams on lectures. You have to go to lectures to do well in the class.
Lectures are much more interesting than previous Yamato/Habal combo. Inserts funny stories and facts into his lectures. I took it with Choi/Berney, and he is definitely much harder than Berney. The curve and extra credits help though. Use his study guides and review the slides online and you'll be fine.
I had him with Habal. I didnt use the book. I went to all of the lectures. He uses powerpoints and its very useful so take good notes. He also posts the powerpoints online along with a version of the study guide for the tests. The tests are a bit difficult because it contains some material that were not taught in the class.
Took him w/ Franks. You'll have to buy and use the textbooks. He's a funny guy, but his grading is tough.
Great aas professor for engineering student who doesn't like reading like me. His test is fair and somewhat easy. His lecture isnt really clear but you can tell that he is really trying to get students attention. Overall he is pretty good.
I had him with Berney. He is very nice and helpful. He is definitely a very knowledgeable professor and his lectures are very engaging. Just show up and take notes. You don't really need to read the books either. There are no surprises on the midterms. He actually grades easier on essays/essay portions on the exams compared to Berney.
he is ok but very boring lecture
Provides good notes and study guides, but his lectures can be a bit difficult to sit through. Overall he just wants to see that you have a basic idea of the main points so his grading isn't too harsh. Also, he has a unique sense of humor that I can't quite explain..
Hard grader on essays. He adds humor into his lecture, so it won't bored you.
Had him with Franks. Difficult grader but lectures can be entertaining. Talks about important information and gives study guides on potential test questions. Will need to study hard to get good grade.
Great professor, straight forward , very helpful. I've never used the text book other than a reference for papers and current have a strong B. Lectures can be boring to some, but he genuinely has a passion for history and makes me love the class. Tests are straight forward No surprises,he even gives study guides! Overall great professor.
He is a funny guy with interesting lectures. Must read Takaki if want to do well on exams. Many of times the T/F on tests consist of random facts. Not a hard teacher and will listen to your concerns and you will always know where you stand in class. Very fair grader who likes participation. He is opinionated. One of the best teachers for AAS.
Very good professor, although he have a lot of personal opinions towards history and cultures. in the end, very good professor. very funny in lectures, and helpful!
I personally prefer him when lecturing over Doi a bit more because I understood him more than I did with Doi....but he is a more strict than Doi, grading wise. He has a bit of an accent so sometimes its hard to understand, but its not bad at all. Class is totally boring though.
Professor Choi is definitely a lot better than some of the other AAS teachers. He'll tell you exactly what he wants on his essays and as long as you show up to class and pay attention to his lecture, you can get an A. He's actually fairly easy grader but his exams are a little bit hard since they're more on what he thinks & not the textbook.
Attendance to class is mandatory because he makes online mini quizzes based on the days lecture. Mini quizzes sometimes have English mistakes, or ask about a specific fact from the lecture that he talks about so be careful. It is easy to get a B in the class. Two midterms, two essays, and an online final. He doesn't give study guides.
I had Choi for both AAS A & B and im glad I took him again. Although he is a hard grader compared to other AAS professor I had, as long as you attend lectures and pay attention, most likely you'll pass the class. The mini quizzes he give are really easy as long as you pay attention to his lecture. All tests are online and he always give extra time.
The questions for midterms and final are too specific and opinionbased to the point where studying was almost useless Some questions even have English errors He did not ever even give a study guide Teachers were very unclear and confused students about the final exam
Pretty easy class, make sure you attend when he lectures b/c he gives a lot of online quizzes (3-5pts worth) Slightly awkward guy, tells stupid jokes (which no one laughs at). As long as you keep up with assigned readings , attend class, and take good notes, you really should be fine.
Professor is passionate about the material he teaches, but he is a bit awkward. Has an accent so it is a bit tough to fully understand. His short answer questions are annoying due to the lack of understanding the english language. Both midterms and final are online for 33A and B. Essays can break your grade so make sure to stick to the rubric!
I really enjoyed Prof. Choi. He is well-traveled and brings that knowledge to class. His lectures are interesting and he is clear about what he wants from you on quizzes, exams, and papers.
Choi is a great lecturer. He tries to ease the tension in the wrong and make it lively with his off topic jokes. He often talks about other subjects, which makes the class more interesting. Tests are all online and weekly quizzes when he lectures that week.
If you paid any attention at all in high school level American history esp APUSH, you'll pass with an A without the textbook.
Professor Choi's class is very interesting. He has weekly quizzes but if you attend class, then you will have no problem passing the class. Professor Choi gives out 2 essays during the semester. He is a fair grader, so if you follow the prompt, you will have no problem on his essays. Overall, a very nice & funny professor.
Fair grader! Dr. Choi is not one of those profs who have secret grading rubrics for essays. He makes sure you understand what he is looking for in the two essays that are assigned during the semester and is there for you in office hours if you have further questions. There are weekly quizzes on canvas based on readings and lecture.
He's a very friendly guy and is always on the side of the students.
I had Professor Choi for AAS 33A and 33B and I would definitely take him again. When I was struggling with personal stuff, I went to his office hour and he worked with me to get caught up with some quizzes and gave me advice on an essay. He makes jokes during class to lighten up the mood and the lectures are interesting.
Go to class, because he gives quizzes at the end of each week. Also those notes are more helpful in essays and exams than the book. Overall he's a pretty cool professor. Grades are fair, no percentages of assignmentsexamsparticipation, and gives extra credit.
Very good professor who appreciates students who go to his office hours. Don't be afraid to ask for help, he's very approachable for help. Be sure to go to his lectures and take notes, because they're very useful to refer to when studying for quizzes and tests. He keeps you interested with his lectures and they aren't drop-dead boring.
This class is really straightforward. My advice is to take notes (really good notes, not just from copying) and don't skip a day in that class or you'll get left behind. There's a online quiz every week related to the notes. History isn't my strong suit. No group assignments. We did about 2 essays about 3-4 pages long. Make a small group, it helps.
Class is not mandatory to attend, but you will have a better chance at passing when you go. Weekend quizzes are lecture specific and involves the reading as well. The final in class was straight forward and was on the study guide. The midterm was online and a bit difficult, but mainly comprehensive of past quizzes and the lectures. GO TO LECTURES!!
Great class. Put in the work and you should get at least a B. Going to class should result in a 100% on almost all quizzes bc they are based off lectures. Put some honest effort into the essays and you should get a satisfactory grade on them even if you are not great at writing essays. Don't cheat, hurts the class and yourself.
A great teacher. Easy class if you go to class and pay attention in lectures. Has some funny moments in class that will help you remember lectures. Quizzes and papers are based on lectures. Going to class and doing honest work should result in at least a passing grade.
He's really passionate and is very interesting to hear in lecture.
Go to class and take note you pass. Review your note for exam and spend times in your paper A! Papers are easy if you listen to his lectures and take notes. I take him for AAS 33 A&B and get two A+. Final word, take good note you get A. BTW he do online quiz every week and online exam as well. And he is Mr. Nice-guy
Dr. Choi is very knowledgeable and makes the class very interesting. He is easily accessible and gives a good feedback to assignments. I highly recommend him.
When my friend asked him about the essay prompt, he refused to give an answer. He said one of the thing he test students on was their understanding of the prompt! So he can't tell us anything more than what is already on the prompt.
He is a very hard grader.
I took Choi during summer in which there were 6 exams, 2 group projects, and a final. 1. Pay attention and take notes on the lecture. 2. Exams are 90% based on the lecture. 3. The course reading is listed but VERY MINIMAL. If you reference his lecture and additional details in the book, you'll do fine. 4. You have to work for an A.
Good Teacher.
If you attend lecture & take good notes, you'll be fine. His exams are online, but the questions are pretty difficult. Sometimes he gives in-class pop-quizzes after lectures, but they're only 2 questions & are pretty easy. Just make sure you work hard on essays & review for the exams.
Professor Choi claims that he's "Mr. Nice Guy", which is partly true. In this semester, he's more lenient to his students by offering extra credit. However, extra credit was offer because his students did poorly on their midterms. His online midterms are very tricky. There's 2 papers, 2 online midterms, and a final. Overall, not a bad professor.
Great Teacher.
The midterms are online and the professor is pretty funny and seems to know the material well. There are two group presentations where he assigns the groups but he's an easy grader. His exams are difficult if you don't read the textbook. Also, there is term paper that is really easy. Overall, his class was easy and very straightforward.
funny, knows his stuff, and very generous about extra credit. Two group projects and the exams are really difficult but it's online
There are 2 essays, 2 midterms, and weekly quizzes (online), but BEWARE... his quizzes and midterms are EXTREMELY tricky/hard. Almost every question asks "Which of the following is NOT..." rather than which of the following IS the answer. Overall very difficult to get a good grade and would not recommend Professor Choi.
his teaching is easy to follow but if you want an A in the class, do the readings and do well on the tests.
I forgot to buy the textbook for the class so I didn't have it the whole semester but it wasn't really required. His quizzes and tests are easy, you don't really have to go to class either.
Lectures were straightforward but when it came to the online exams and quizzes, there were always those tricky questions. For example, "which of the following makes the least sense..." However if you do all the essays and get good grades on the tests and quizzes, you should get at least a B. Also, he doesn't accept late assignments.
This guy just rambles in class, thick accent and completely unorganized. He reads off the presentation during lecture and gives random examples that aren't necessary and distracting.
His lectures can be boring at times but always ends class early. You only write one paper and he does online quizzes. All his midterms are online. The questions can be really difficult but if you go to his lectures he will tell you what is on the exams
He was a very easy professor for 33A but he is really difficult for this class. His test questions are worded strangely and can be confusing. The groups presentations are okay. But his class can get really boring with so long lectures. But he always ends class early.
He has dry humor. He'll drop something funny in the middle of the lecture out of the blue. 2 group presentations, 2 midterms, 1 final. Midterms and final are online, you don't have to come to class. Textbook isn't really needed. Quizzes either in class or online, you have to show up to class regardless. He lets you out early, so that's good.
He is so boring. It's tough to follow along becuase his approach to lectures. Very slow paced and continuously repeats himself. He does however give you some indication of the questions he will ask on the test. In order to know this, however, you have to pay critical attention to what he is saying.
- Attendance isn't part of the grade BUT he does the pop quizzes so make sure you come at the end of class like I did :-) - Make friends with people around so you can help each other on the tests & quizzes -The lecture is boring but take notes so it can help you when you do your quizzes
Super easy class. I missed a few of his lectures and still got an A. It's a long class but he lets you out early. Quizzes given at the end of every class which is based off of the lecture so if you pay attention, you will pass. He's very nice and caring. Gives plenty of extra credit. 1 paper, 1 small group presentation, 3 midterms, and 1 final.
He cares about the students ; take him with people you know it will help a lot esp quizzes tests;
Make you make fiends and go to class. There are open book/ discussion quizzes everyday throughout the class. There are only 1 paper for the entire semester, and it is fairly easy as there is no citation required.
His class is the easiest class in SJSU. Just beware of his quizzes and test, and read his lecture notes carefully, an easy A is yours. His class is really hard to add because students all hear about his easy class. I saw a student who was dropped from his class due to system error and she cried. But that is no way to get add code.
He is not helpful!!! I had him for 2020 summer course and emailed him multiple times to get help saying I was struggling and nothing not an email back! I can also tell the videos he uses are very old because the date says it's from a whil ago. I don't get why we pay so much for someone not to help us!! Some of us have the ACE and need extra help!!!
took @ summer 2020 and he cut out hw/midterms, only 3 quizzes a week and final. Not good bc we don't guarantee we will do good on all those quizzes. It's also good bc there's less work to do. If you do take this class, make sure to contact many people to work together on the quizzes. I got a good grade because of that. 2 extra credit offered.
Only weekly quizzes based off recorded lecture, but answers are not super clear. I usually get 4/5, so I'm sitting at 90% rn. Got rid of midterms, only final. The worst thing about this class is that 33A has no Asian American history. It's all about the creation and development of the US. He said 33B will have more AA history.
Idk why he's gotten bad reviews... He's such a good professor, literally, all we did this semester was watch videos and take quizzes on our own time... The quizzes were a bit tricky from time to time, but that's the only con for him :)
During COVID: No set meeting time regardless of schedule. He posts lecture vids on canvas and 1-2 quizzes are due by the end of every week. Easy class since you can do the assignments whenever. All quizzes and tests are on Canvas. Don't bother looking up answers because he makes up his own questions. Easy A class and would recommend taking.
Easy! I have him for the summer, all the quizzes are due Sunday (make a discord to share). His slides are up online but they are just main pts of the topics and then he explains them more in the lec videos. Do notes and then watch to give you an idea of the topic. The quizzes are not timed and you can take as long as you want w/ them.
I took him asynchronously, as his class is super chill! There's a quiz every week due on Sunday, but you can easily pass it (probs make a Discord lol), and that's it. He provides lecture slides and recordings of him if you need them, and an occasional movie to watch.
Asynch class was super easy! Just one weekly quiz and a final. Make sure to have a class discord so it's easier. No need to watch the recorded lectures, just take notes on the slides
Weekly quizzes and offers several extra credit.
Work together on his quizzes as they are usually T/F and tells you if you were right or wrong. His slides are very plain and the questions are sometimes ambiguous but you will live if you have some high school background of US history.
I loved taking his AAS33A asynchronous course in the Fall 2022 semester. I got one of the earliest enrollment dates for the Spring 2023 semester. I was anticipating taking his AAS33B course. On my enrollment day, all his new in-person and asynchronous courses were put on the waitlist. Now, I'm left with taking another professor in the summer :(
shifted into online class in the second half of semester and it was fine. just weekly quizzes and some extra credit. he was understanding and not a harsh grader. easy class
Super easy class! quizzes every week about 5 questions each. posted slides and lectures on canvas. pretty straightforward
weekly quizzes and extra credit make up your grades. the slides are not that good but you can google most of the questions. it's pretty straightforward, not much to say
Optional attendance for in person class, recorded lectures uploaded online, each week's hw is an easy 5 question T/F quiz on canvas. Extra credit gives a crazy amount of points, and professor is chill.
Class legit only consists of lectures and quizzes. Try to make a study group to prepare for the quizzes, and he also offers extra credit quizzes. I recommend doing the extra quizzes as a back up. Very straight forward and simple class.
the GOAT. Posted all lectures online, every week your homework consists of ONE 5 question true/false quiz with open notes.
His lectures are all over the place, hard to understand, and very boring. He goes off topic and his lectures dont always line up with the quizzes. Grades very tough. Class consists of 6 midterms through the semester and about 2 quizzes every week in addition to projects presentations. Quiz questions are very confusing as well.
His lectures online/in-person explain the concepts in detail & you will have an idea of what happened in the context of Asian Americans. It is a bit hard to understand him at first, but don't worry, he is more than happy to help you out. All exams & quizzes in this class are open book/online. Very chill and a pleasure to work with.
Great professor and super funny! In-person class with quizzes every lecture but they are super easy, 5 - 10 questions. Class is "mandatory" because the quizzes need a password but people in class will usually send u the code. Great Class!
Goes off-topic during the lectures, but assignments in both 33A and 33B consisted of 1-2 quizzes (mainly 5 questions t/f) twice a week and one group project. The midterms and final are all recycled questions from previous quizzes. All tests are open notes and he encourages use of google for things he didn't cover.
Perfect class for Area D. Everything is on Canvas and 99% of quiz and exam answers are online. He made us do group presentations this semester though and will ask you questions that'll put you on the spot, but you'll still earn full credit out of it regardless. Best advice from him: "A Chinese restaurant is bad if there's mostly non-Asians eating."
Professor Choi was a chill professor, but his lectures were boring. He had quizzes due every class based on his lectures which sometimes would not cover what was asked in the quizzes; I used Quizlet for all of them. Make sure to join the class Discord; it helps a lot. I just took this class to get credit. He doesn't really respond to emails.
Overall, easy A class. Professor Choi was a chill professor, but his lectures were boring. He had quizzes due every class based on his lectures which sometimes would not cover what was asked in the quizzes; I used Quizlet for all of them. Make sure to join the class Discord; it helps a lot. He doesn't really respond to emails.
Good professor with a relatively easy class. He has quizzes on class covered topics at the end of each day, but they are all easy if you pay attenton. He also gives some answers if that question was not covered that day. Tests are available all day.
Easy A, everything is online. One group project which isn't hard.
Daily quizzes in class attendance are mandatory for the quiz code, 5 online exams, we are allowed to refer to online resources, one group presentation, and one final exam. The class is fairly simple to follow, definitely take this professor for an easy class.
The tests can be taken at home so they are pretty much open note. Most of the class is participation quizzes and you can just have someone elsee tell you the code or sit in class and do nothing until he gives it out. If you are actually trying to learn though, he is incredibly knowledgeable but has a little bit of a monotone voice n rambles a bit.
This guy is the goat, don't know how he isn't the highest rated professor. All online tests, I missed the final and he still let me take it a day after. No homework or participation.
Fall 2025. Class is extremely passable, participation quizzes at the end of each lecture that needs a password to access. There are group presentations that are also relatively easy. Midterms are online, not in person. For the final, it is in person, 8 short answer questions, and you need to buy a Blue/Green book for it. He grades a little harsh.
