Tries her best but very hard to understand. If you take her class you better pray for a good TA.
Really hard to understand and is not helpful at all when you try to ask questions. I would definitely not take a class with her again.
She's hard to understand, she uses air quotes when they're not necessary and her accent is thick. To her credit she does try really hard. You can pass the class, you just won't learn a thing.
Very thick accent, uses strange methods sometimes to solve certain equations, her handwriting is a little hard to read. Having a good TA is really beneficial. But you still need to go to lectures cuz she usually has participation cards
Everything on the assignments were not on study guides or tests. Upon getting to exams there were many things which were never mentioned in lecture. Her tests are difficult, she seems very unorganized and is not easy to contact or reach at office hours for help. Unfortunately, this class is required for many students, avoid taking if possible.
Heavy accent, very hard to understand at points.
She's amazing
Very difficult to understand. Gives out too many hints on how to pass rather than just teaching the material. She uses different ways than what would normal be done. Doesn't explain things very well.
terrible teacher very very hard to understand and she does not know how to explain anything. if you have a hard time in math you will defiantly have a hard time in her class.
Absolutely terrible professor. DO NOT take her if you want a good grade. She is rude, not helpful, and does not care rather you pass or fail. You also will not be able to understand anything she says. She never smiles and she gets your attention by banging on the white board. she is rude and not helpful .
If you're taking math 098 there is a good chance you're not good at math anyway. I would recommend, going to every lecture, and getting a tutor. She's very hard to understand due to her accent, and the lecture is big, so it's hard to ask questions! Good luck!!
I took her for Math 098. Yes in lecture she could be hard to understand with the accent. But when a professor has to speak up over students who dont know how to be quite. And its not like they were talking about Math either. That can Make her accent a little harder to understand. When I had questions she was more than willing to help out.
Could not understand her accent and she did not explain anything well. Odds are if you are taking math098 you aren't too good at math In the first place and she does not make learning it any easier.
Okay it is math so expect to struggle a bit. She does have a accent, but is the only professor that teaches 098, she's really not that terrible.
Worst professor/ math teacher I have ever had at MSU. Very rude and talks way too fast and doesnt explain things very well.
She is a pretty cool Professor. Took her for Math 110 and Math 098, so I got to know her more. She occasionally reminded me of quizzes and assignments due for both Math110 and Math098. Her accent gotten easier to understand throughout the course. Participation points add up so go to lectures and TA sessions and you should be fine.
She does go really fast through the material but that's mainly because she has a lot of material to go through in one semester. If you're good at math but out of practice she makes this class very easy to pass. if you are generally not good at math, utilize the "help me solve this" feature of the homework site and look for a tutor.
Very nice lady, she will care about your grade, as long as you go to class. She is failing one of my friends because she skipped a few lectures (even though she is acing the exams). In math 098 if you know what you're doing the class is a breeze. 7/10 would recommend.
She seems rude at first but if you reach out to her she is more than willing to help you and will continue to make sure you are doing well.
She has a heavy Asian accent but it becomes easier to understand her throughout the course. She's very clear that she is always available outside of class to help.
She goes extremely fast in class constantly telling everyone whom asks her for additional clarification that there is not enough time to discuss in lecture and ignores them however we would always end up leaving lecture 10 mins early. She tries (i guess) to be good but just ends up falling short, don't recommend
Shes an okay teacher but if you do not pass her tests and do the homework and show up for class you will not pass. keep in mind only 700/1000 points to pass this class.
I know many people complain about her, but I found her to be an incredibly helpful and kind professor. If you are confused or don't understand lecture content, she will happily help you not just during office hours, but well into the evening and even on the weekends. She is certainly one of the greatest professors at MNSU.
She's not awful, but her accent is really heavy and often hard to understand and follow. She also thinks the class is doing a lot worse than it really is, she once had a talk with the class about how were not doing so good on exams and my whole group got 90+/100. She cares that everyone does good, but just do the homework to teach yourself.
in order to pass this class you need to get 700 points out of 1000 the exams worth 500 points ,participation 300 points and H.W 200 points if you get 699 you will re take the class.
The professor makes the class harder than it needs to be, most of information is review from high school. The lectures are clear and the homework is pretty easy but the tests/quizzes are tough and she always pulls the trick questions. The best advice I can give is make sure you study don't just assume you know the material.
Her accent is heavy. She also goes by really fast. If there is another professor you can take, id say go that route.
She is not a perfect professor
Her office hours make her almost unreachable. If you have an issue you always have to go to the TA first, unfortunately my TA cares very little. She is the only Professor that teaches Math098 at MNSU, do you will have her regardless.
She is one of the better professors I've had. Although her accent is very strong, you will get used to it and understand her if you know common English. Everyone says she's a bad professor because they can't understand her but she is tolerable. She explains very in depth and asks if she can move to the next problem.
She was a great teacher! Her accent is a little difficult to understand at first, but it gets easier as the semester goes on. She makes sure everyone has the slide notes before switching, despite her going sorta fast. Going to recitation really helps cement concepts, and truly gives off the feeling she wants students to succeed.
Not bad at all for pass/no credit class!! understandable pretty much!
In this class, you really hit the ground running and participation really matters in this class.
Teacher isn't very helpful, and pretty hard to understand.
She is a nice professor
She can be hard to understand at first, but eventually you catch on. Goes quickly through the powerpoint so you may have to study more outside class to understand. Only meet a couple times a week, so it is not terrible. She is a very nice lady.
I have no idea what she is talking about. Strong accent.
I have no idea what she is talking about. Strong accent. Was almost completely online and I hate online courses.
As many people have been saying she is pretty hard to understand sometimes. I've had her twice this year and it does get a little easier, but still tough. That being said she is willing to help you and she let me postpone taking an exam when I got sick even though her syllabus said no make ups. So she's willing to help you out.
Shin is an awesome professor. Everyone complains about her accent and claims they can't understand her, but it's actually easy to understand everything she says. She's amazing!!
Professor Shin talks a little too fast to understand, almost every lecture i hardly knew what was going on. She was also pretty rude to a lot of people.
Overall I think she's a great professor and I honestly don't know how some people don't pass this class. You get 500 points just if you show up and do your homework so you could literally get a 50% on all of the exams. I've gotten a 95% on all the tests. She's a little hard to understand and she will call people out if you don't pay attention.
Be prepared to teach yourself.
She isn't a bad professor, but she has over 600 students a semester so she has to go fast on a lot of things. It sucks that it's only really her. Overall, I don't really think it's her fault that she has so much material to go over and so many students to handle at one time.
Be prepared to be saying "huh" every lecture. It's hard to understand her, it's hard to follow because she talks super fast, which I understand because theres over 600 student's but it's confusing at times. I strongly would recommend going to the math tutors for homework and practice exams, they will help you understand everything!!
Apart from the attendance points, there's no reason to go to lectures. You will learn everything from your TA. Professor moves way to fast during lectures, is often difficult to understand and explains concepts in roundabout ways. You're better off taking this class online or waiting a semester. You will gain nothing from this professor.
hard to understand & teaches fast
Professor Shin was great during lecture even though she did rush through problems and concepts at times. People tend to struggle with understanding her but as long as you're paying attention in class you will be able to pick up on what she is saying. I was told to buy the textbook for the class but I didn't use it at all.
I took a while to understand her accent and even then there were still words I didn't understand. Otherwise, she always seems very pissed off. As for her course, I hated it. Everything in it was total review from 8th grade and there was so much homework. Not a fun class. But it's very easy to pass.
Its not hard if you do all the homework and go to lecture. If you need extra time or more tries on the homework ask the professor she WILL help you! You have to speak up. Also The tests are easy!
Shes obviously not the best professor, but she tries her best. She also has a thick accent which is hard at times. Attendance is a huge part of your grade for lecture and recitation. Homework is also huge, but so easy. Exams are kind of hard, but if you show up to class and do your homework, you should easily pass.
Miss a test. You need a doctor's note.. Lost $500 in flights
Does a bad job of breaking down the material and explaining why it works the way it does to help students understand it, same goes for the TA. They both also practically rush through the material. Deadlines for in-class homework are too strict with no exceptions for late submissions, they should be extended by 10 minutes.
She moves fast and it is hard to understand her and her TA. She does not take the time during lecture to make sure the students know the content. The nice thing about her is, if you don't think you are doing good in the class if you reach out to her and talk to her about it, she will always help!
She does not give you the time of day to make mistakes. If you make a small mistake on a math problem she will take all your points away. It is hard to understand what she is saying. She also asks you to show your work, but does not show her own work when teaching.
Do whatever it takes to succeed. She teaches fast so if you can't keep up with her, best thing is to consult with a tutor or online videos. Accent is alright but hard to comprehend at times. Homework is plentiful so do them by the stated deadline. No exceptions. Tests are a bit hard so study for those. Overall, probably would rather not take again.
She seems very careless and strict about students. She goes through the material faster than any teacher or professor i have seen. She has a very thick accent that is hard to understand and that is the same for her TA. She is also very threatening about even being 2 minutes late. Will never take again with uncaring teacher.
Dr. Shin was one of the worst professors i have ever had. She taught way to fast, we were not allowed to ask questions. She was rude and horrible. We could not understand anything she said with her thick accent. She was horrible in class and out of class. Trust me, if you get the chance to not take this class with her. DONT!!!
she is not very approachable, she is very smart but can NOT teach at all, her accent is very thick and it doesn't help when she goes so fast. I would not take this course again or any course with her again.
She talks way too fast in lectures, is really hard to understand and is really rude too. God someone PLEASE show her this site.
I would rather mop the whole pacific ocean than taking her class. Never again
She talks so fast and is extremely hard to understand. The entire class would be confused on a concept and she would not actually explain how to do it. Rather, she would just say "this is a famous problems" and then move on. Would not take a class with her again.
Her exams are not hard because its the same as the worksheet she provides however, don't know why but she is angry all the time. When you approach her to ask questions she is rude. Honestly, I would say don't take her but she is the only professor for math 098
Truly the worst professor I have ever seen. She is inconsistent in her grading and is very hard to understand. If you are taking her over another professor to avoid Friday classes, don't do it! I promise you having class on Friday's would be better than this
Very difficult to understand and approach about questions from the material. She mentions she grades on a curve but still no one gets an A in her class.
I had to teach myself everything in this class. Very hard to understand what was being said. Additional meetings were a waste of time. I left feeling more confused than I went into it.
I took her math course during summer, the course was only one month long and we had recorded lectures everyday. She does not know how to explain new topics, she expects you to know everything. The only way to understand her lectures is if you had take precalculus in high school and you are just reviewing the topics. If not you will struggle a lot.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. Lectures all made sense, and she made math easy for me to understand. Definitely attend all lectures and do all the homework. Study! She made me love math and I'm currently taking another class of hers right now. Math has never been so easy.
RUN AWAY BEFORE IT IS TO LATE. In exams, She will find any fault with your method of solving a question and deduct an unfair amount of points for it, sometimes she might give you the same points as someone who submitted a blank paper because you forgot to factor an expression. You won't see her bad side until mid exams in that case it is too late.
Dr. Shin cares about her students passing! I've emailed her many times about my grades and she has helped me. She does have an accent but I still understood her very well. Her lectures made sense. I only scored low because I did not study enough problems, but had I studied more, I definitely would've gotten an A. She responds to emails quickly.
Her lectures made me angry, so I had to watch organic chemistry tutor many times. Very hard to understand and was very rude when emailing. A lot of homework but little credit gave for it.
Respondus lockdown with microphone and webcam
do not take this course with her either on-campus or online it's awful
Dr. Shin is very rude and her lectures make me angry. I am very good at understanding people with heavy accents but hers is too much for the subject being taught. "I would rather mop the entire Pacific Ocean than take her class again". There is also a mandatory $118 online purchase just to submit your homework. Will not be taking her classes again.
Dr. Shin was a very understanding person and was very willing to meet with me when having trouble. I didn't do so great in the class but she was great at helping me out when I needed. Never once stopped believing in me.
Professor Shin is possibly the WORST professor at MSU! She is a very rude person. At any point in class if you don't understand something she simply passes it by stating "We don't have time". Instead of teaching the material, she just writes it down in about ten seconds then moves on before you understand what's going on! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Professor Shin was a wonderful teacher. She only grades hard on tests. Homework for my course was not graded by points but participation. If you are having trouble, her office hours make a huge difference. She may seem rude but she never means it like that it is mostly a cultural difference. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed.
Hard to understand
Dr. Shin is a super kind person and will accommodate time outside of class to help you. But her lecture videos are useless and you are better off going of the text book and the organic chemistry tutor.
I had a good experience in Dr. Shin's class. Her lectures are fast but she has limited time to present a lot of information. Show up and take notes. Go to office hours and TA hours for help. They'll help you if you just ask! I would take another math class from her.
As a student that struggles in math and needs the teacher to explain a little more, this teacher did not do that. She unfortunately expects all students to be perfect. You have to go in, in order to get your test scores back. She also was not the nicest. Overall I have had a bad experience with her. Wish I picked a different math teacher.
She is a nice teacher and wants the best for her students, but it is incredibly hard to do well. Tests are very difficult and account for the majority of your grade. Lectures are fast-paced and can be hard to keep up with. This class makes me fight for my life - I'm losing. I studied 20+ hours for an exam - felt great about the material - got a C.
