Awesome Teacher!
Great Teacher! She is very enthusiastic and makes the subjective fun! She understands that philosophy is not always easy to read and learn. She does a great job explaining each philosopher. A lot of student participation and case studies. It is really a fun class!
Wonderful!! She is able to make every class fun. She engages the students and keeps everyone's attention. She is definitely a great instructor!
Wasn't very clear about what would actually be on tests. Tests had many questions about material that wasn't covered in-depth. No study guides--students are left on their own to figure out what's important. Lots of reading with very little emphasis on important parts. Would not recommend.
She made the material very exciting! We had great discussions in class, which gave the text book material life and practicality. She rewards genuine effort quite well and gives you a chance to bring your grade up.
Her online class is really hard and I would not recommend it because she is very inconisent with assignments. Grades a little too tough on papers. The tests that barely covers any of the reading focuses on history. She is nice, but think before taking it because her class is hard but I guess she is the lesser of evils with other PHI teachers.
Hated this class. Very tough grader and the exams have many questions that are not covered in the reading. Online group projects are just plain dumb and this class had one. I ended up doing the entire project by myself. Unsympathetic & Bad Teacher!!
This lady expects everyone to automatically be a philosopher. It would be a great class if she was there to TEACH and not expect you to already know everything. My brother, who is a philosophy major at UNC said that her group projects were quite weird and lame..I wouldn't take her...unless you want a C!
She is awful, thank god this is class is over because she demanded way too much from students. Also, I felt she was biased with her grading on essays. I wouldn't take her online because she changed the syballus halfway through the semester and she expects everyone to know the material really well and it is tough. Tests don't cover material studied.
Took class online. Bad teacher. Class materials filled with typographical errors yet teacher has the gall to grade weekly journals with a 3 point system which results in you either receiving a 33%,66%, or a 100. Also pop quizzes in an online class. Teaching materials not clear or even written by teacher(lazy?). Do not take this teachers class.
HORRIBLE!!!! Do not take her class if you want a decent grade. She offers very little clarification, and uses youtube videos from other professors instead of lecture notes. The pop quizzes are ridiculous for an online class, and she does not offer adequate feedback. She is a terrible "teacher" (if you want to call her that).
Probably the worst teacher I have had yet. I agree with whoever stated that her "instructions" are filled with typographical errors. Her "instructions" are impossible to understand and I do not believe that even she knows what she is talking about. I took the online class and the assignments were next to impossible to decipher. She is terrible.
Let's put it like this, the class above for most of the assignments were D's and F's. Her tests do not match her lecture notes, nor are her discussion boards engaging in any way. She is useless online, although I heard that she is good seated, so there's an alternate to meet the philosophy requirement. Hated every second of this awful online class.
Awesome prof in classroom setting. Have her for Critical Thinking and the majority of class sessions is engaging group discussion and debate. Gives "on-time quizzes" where you write down your name and get an A just for being there. Only exams = midterm and final. Very low textbook usage.
She is a wonderful professor! I took her online but she is very helpful whenever you have a question! You must read and watch the material assigned in order to do well on quizzes and tests. Great class! You will definitely work hard but learn a lot as well.
At first i was nervous about going into this class because she made us read ridiculous amounts out of the book, and i failed all of her quizzes. I ended up recieving a B+ in the class for attending class everyday and doing fabulous on my oral presentation. If you ask alot of questions and go to class everyday, you will be fine.
I will be graduating in the fall and have over a 3.5 GPA and I would have to say that she is one of the worst instructors I have ever had. She would tell you to read an article but not have it posted. No one ever had clarification of what was assigned. She had a syllabus and posted things on line and then would change her mind.
It is not clear what this lady wants as far as assignments... it is like she expects you to know what she is thinking. She doesn't actually teach anything- all her material is taken from other sources such as youtube! The worst part of it is that the youtube clips are of other professors!
I took her class in summer. Not a good choice for short semester. She is fair and funny! You will work hard! Class participation is a must! Paper is 60% of your grade so start it the first week and let her revise it with you. She will help if you ask! Great person but not an easy class!
I really like this professor, the class is definitely not easy but she is a really cool teacher. I have learned quite a bit from her very helpful instructor.
This lady does not teach and is very vague on her demands for assignments. Avoid her at all costs as she is the worst teacher I have experienced in my college career.
Not very good at making sense of this subject. Was unfair with understanding of technical issues during the final exam which ultimately cause failure in class. Boo!
Took a hybrid course. She changed the attendance requirements during the first week of class. The online portion was useless. She didn't post things correctly and instructions were vague. Had us mapping arguments in an introductory class.
Fun teacher! had her last semester :D i learned alot about philosophers throughout history.Make sure you show up on time to score some easy points w. her on time quizzes! The only paper is worth 40% of your grade so make sure you prepare and start early!Take notes, read, and participate and you should have an amazing time in her class, i know i did
Prof. Arias was a great instructor, but you need to be able to follow directions. I received an A in her online class and the material was challenging, but not impossible. I had trouble taking one of her quizzes on Bb and she was completely understanding. Be sure to state your arguments as clearly as possible and be ready to support those arguments
Fair grader, but expects people to do work.
Instructor Arias is awesome. She gives you all the information you need to write a very concise paper and do well on the quiz's. I took the class online in a 5 week course and received an A. I would recommend brushing up on your writing skills. All in all I loved Mrs. Arias and her class!
Horrible teacher! She dropped me from her class on accident, admitted to me in email that it was a mistake but still wouldn't make the effort to get me back in the class. It was a 5 week class and she delayed responding to me for 5 days so by the time I was able to pursue my complaint, I was WAY to far behind. Avoid this woman at ALL costs!!
Prof Arias is awesome! She made the material fun and relevant. Not easy, but not impossible to get a good grade. Probably best in class, not hybrid or online--I would be so sad to only see her lectures on youTube instead of in person. She's especially good for people who enjoy thinking thoughts, or who want to learn to think thoughts.
Stay away. I have a 4.0 GPA, I took this class over the summer. The amount of work she gives you is CRAZY!
Online class: I had prior exposure to logic and I like it. It wasn't extremely difficult for me. But, if this doesn't come naturally to you, beware, it is tricky. Take a traditional class if you can. She was okay. The website was disorganized and there were errors on tests: sloppy, especially for someone teaching logic.
Bad Grader. It does not matter if you requested, or get help either from her or the ILC she will grade you as it pleases her not because of your merit. I will never again sign up for one of her class!!!!
Worst teacher I have ever had. Stay away. She is a bad grader, pulling material from other teacher online, sending you to fetch the material, and then giving you bad grade. Expect you to know what she is thinking. Fails you without explanation, and worst of all even if you request help she still does not answer you on time. Bad, bad, bad teacher
Took her class online in the summer. Many assignments to covered during 5 weeks so be prepared. Exams every week, some easier than others. Communicates with students through announcements, but she opened a discussion board for us to use to ask her questions and never replied to any posts. Seems passionate about teaching the material but during summer she is disconnected.
It was actually a very easy class. Easy papers, easy discussion boards and easy quizzes. I looked on here before taking her class and thought it would be really hard, it wasn't. But you do have to log in to blackboard or email at least once a day.
Like many students taking this class, I just need 3 credit hrs in a lame class that has no function in the real world. I highly suggest choosing another professor if you plan on skating through this class. She is highly disorganized, and will grade you like logic is your actual major.
First off, when is a philosophy class EVER easy? Professor Arias is fantastic if you are willing to actually think (hard for most I know). Her class was very discussion based. Which is how it should be. It can be hard to follow but she is more than willing to help students understand the material and actually gets excited when they show interest.
I took Arias online for Critical Thinking. I originally thought that the class was going to be an easy A, but that was not the case. Even though it was much harder than I expected, it was still an interesting class and Arias was nice, very fair, and helpful. I ended up getting a B in the class. Put forth the extra effort and you should be fine.
Where do I begin? Unfortunately Her class was the only online class available for PHi 240. I knew it won't be easy but my god she is not a fair grader. She expects for you to know what she is thinking in her head. My interpretation is different from some one else's. IIs she the worst teacher at Wake Tech? Don't know but she would probably rank #1
Graduating at UNC, with honors, this semester and took her PHI 240 two years ago online before transferring from Wake Tech. She wants you to think like her on very subjective test questions, but offers no help to do so whatsoever. I can now officially say that she is the worst college professor I have had in my entire undergraduate career.
I'm taking this class online now and she is the worst. Nothing is never good enough for her. She is not a fair grader either. If you're not thinking of what she has in her mind already you can guarantee that you will get a low grade. She will mess up your GPA trust me!! Avoid her at all
She is not so helping teacher..
I'm taking her online class now. She takes 3 or 4 days to reply to emails, which is just too long for assignments that are due every week. Her notes are incredibly confusing, unclear, and she doesn't know how to form sentences correctly.
I took this course online during the summer, she was the only instructor and after reading her comments I was expecting her to be very difficult. As long as you pay attention to due dates and do the work it should be an easy A class. She was helpful and her notes made the lessons much clearer than the book did.
Interacts with class in a great way, and always pushes forward interesting discussions.
She is DISTANT &CONFUSING in lecture notes and even videos.textbook:What was assigned from the text could be found online. PARTIALLY posts assignments, posted a message that she was STILL WORKING on the study guide during finals! who does that?.UNACCEPTABLE for a “Professor.”TAKETHISCLASS KNOWINGTHATYOUHAVEBEENWARNED OFHERFAULTINESS!
She shares wisdom. I believe she gave me some ice cold water.
I took this class as a buffer to my more difficult core classes. It easily became one of my most frustrating classes I have ever taken. Professor Arias is very sarcastic and seeks to get a rise out of her students rather than help them succeed in the course. Her lectures are very confusing and her power points are awful. Do NOT take this class!
shes a nice professor and she is pretty fair to her students. just read her instructions carefully on her assignments and just do what she wants you to do. tests can be tough. just read and study from the book and not from the power point slides alone.
I'm taking Sophia Arias' online Ethics class this semester and it is the most frustrating class I have ever taken at Wake Tech. I have taken many essay classes at WTC, and I have gotten As in all of them. I'm struggling to keep a C in this class. Her assignments are difficult to understand and she's not fair in her grading. Don't take her classes!
I found Prof. Arias to be awesome! I took her non-online course, I don't know how she is online. But in class it is amazing, group discussion is strongly encouraged, and she encourages you to actually think about ethics and reasoning instead of memorize a gazillion dusty terms. Homework was reasonable and fun.
I would not take this professor again. Took Phi240 ONLINE expecting it to be a simple class. The professor can barely compose a complete sentence in English (this is online, spell check..), yet is very hard on students regarding grading papers. The class was overall an easy class, although the inconsistent grading was very frustrating.
Professor Arias is a strict grader, non online and online courses. She is looking for a very specfic exact answer for all of her assignments, tests, and quizzes. This class (intro to philosophy) is not open for discussion, it is one answer and elaborate how she expects you to. If you do not answer the way she'd like, then tough luck you'll fail.
This has been my absolute favorite class and Sophia Arias my favorite professor. I would highly suggest her and her class to anyone. The work isn't extraordinarily hard, but you definitely have to have a solid understanding of the material to get good grades.
As others have stated, she expects very specific answers to very elaborate questions, which is strange for a philosophy course. Regular spelling/grammatical errors by the profeesor certainly don't help either, when the opposite is always expected of the students. She is accessible though, and does seem to genuinely care about her students.
She is a very tough grader. I feel as though if she does not agree with you she does not give you fair discretion when grading. I took her this summer and made an 87 on the first paper and 70's on the rest of them. When I asked for feed back, she was minimal. I paid attention to directly respond to the criteria but it wasn't good enough. don't take
She is a very tough grader and never explains why you got the grade you did. I have never gotten anything higher than an 80 on any papers even when I follow the rubric. Do not take unless there is no other option.
Mrs. Arias is a hard grader and doesn't give a very clear idea of what she is asking for until after its graded and the rubric is attached. Lots of reading and read it all/take notes if you want to do well! Exams are confusing and difficult, whenever I called/emailed her she never really helped me understand the material better. (Took online class)
I absolutely loved Mrs. Arias. She was hilarious and her lectures were always so interesting. Not too many assignments. Have to have a good understanding of the material and a strong writing background in order to do well. Just check blackboard frequently and email her if you are ever confused, she'll help you.
While the in-class discussions were interesting I did not enjoy this class overall. Arias is unclear and unorganized with dates, grading and material provided. Requires a lot of reading, some of which is never covered in class. Does not provide test material in a clear, measurable way. As a diligent student I was frustrated by the disorganization.
(Online class) Pick a different professor. She does not give clear directions for what she wants and does not offer notes or extra materials to study. Very tough grader and is extremely picky. I don't remember having such a difficult teacher before.
I took this course online. She is a hard grader; however, the rubric clearly states what she expects and if you follow it for assignments, you will get an A in the course. I learned a lot from this class and I really enjoyed the assignments and videos.
Prof. Arias is a great teacher. Ethics and philosophy are tough subjects that we need to find our groove in, Ms. Arias goes above and beyond when asked for help. She has very fair grading criteria and gives great supplementary material such as videos, power points and extra explanations. very positive experience.
Prof. Arias offers everything you need to succeed in her Intro to Ethics class. All instructions were clear and feedback was helpful and encouraging. Quick to reply to questions if there is any confusion. Students must be willing to put a lot of work into reading and understanding the material - not just regurgitating the info learned each week.
For those who are being negative, this is an ethics course. The fundamentals of ethics is a very thought provoking subject. I had her in-class, and she explains complex topics diligently and effectively. If you respect her as an instructor, she will respect you in return. She is the best teacher I've ever had and I didn't want to leave her class.
She will work with you whenever you need help, she will not give up until you 100% understand. Do the reading and pay attention to the notes and pop quiz are a breeze. Pay attention to the hints she gives they are important.
1st. Don't even listen to the comments down below because Professor Arias was freaking awesome! She really cares for her students, if you having a hard time understanding the course or any other issues just talk to her about it and she helo you out. And its Ethics people, if you really pay attention and ask for help, she will help you!
Outstanding Philosophy professor. Really knows the material and, and does a great job of breaking down the dense readings and concepts to make them easier to understand. Professor is also very friendly and always willing to help students . One of the most fun, and most interesting classes I have had so far.
I took her PHI 240 class online. Her grading criteria is a complete mystery to me and getting in touch with her is almost impossible. I scheduled a meeting once to discuss a paper and she was trying to pack up and go home after two minutes of talking to me. Really visibly didn't want to discuss the grades I'd gotten and only gave me vague feedback
This class is tough and Prof Arias is tough. Be prepared for a lot of reading, watching videos, and writing. I found this class to be pretty enjoyable and interesting but it was really tough. Since I took this online, she gave us the option to call and chat with her about questions. Definitely recommend you do this if you want to get a good grade.
Prepare to fight tooth and nail for an "A" paper - the cumulative grade depends on it. Though papers are expected in a humanities class, her rubrics are painfully vague, her grading highly subjective, and altogether draconian. For instance, one paper was 1/3 of a page too LONG and she penalized it by 10 points (out of 100). You've been warned.
Upon beginning this course, I thought it would be difficult though as time went on, I enjoyed this class so much and was so thankful I had taken it seated. Yes, there were times when quizzes killed me, but as long as you show her that you are motivated for this course she will love to give you the grade that you deserve. Enjoyed this class so much!
Facilitator Arias was by far one of the best professors Ive had here at Wake Tech. She values effort, so if you dont try dont expect to pass with an A or B. She has a great sense of humor and If you decide to take her class I would highly recommend you take it seated, as it is more personable and engaging. Ethics is not an easy course to teach,
Cares very much about the material, and is very accessible if you don't understand something. Grading is tough but fair. The quizzes are easy to do, taken from the book and the reading directly, but the papers (we had to do roughly 4 or 5 the entire semester) had better be good; she will help you if you ask for it when writing them.
Professor Arias is a great teacher. Philosophy can be very difficult, but she finds ways to break down the heavy topics and complicated language to help us better understand. Class discussions were great and Professor Arias always found ways to tie philosophy into our current lives. She is extremely open and lets the class mold discussions. Great!
Facilitator Arias is one of the BEST instructors I had in a long time! This is definitely a discussion class and she tries to make sure everyone participate. The course is a little confusing yet she makes it interesting. She sounds scary the first day but don't let that stop you from taking her class.
A 2.9 rating would be generous. Rubric is vague and subjective to her mood, discussion board posts/responses MUST be posted on separate days (likely so she can deduct points when posted together or you forget), and puts "see rubric" when she grades papers instead of commenting. Overall, find a better "facilitator" for an ELECTIVE ethics class.
An awesome professor who always was free to contact outside of class and made difficult subjects easy to understand. Was willing to stay late after a long evening class to explain a subject further when I didn't understand it. Was overall just an amazing professor.
Expect excruciatingly vague writing prompts with inconsistent, emotion-based grading. This professor does not give feedback unless you ask for it. She does not give any guidance or direction unless asked and she will defend this. Basically, she does not do her job unless you call her and ask her to. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE.
Awful! Points deducted on discussions for no apparent reason, never gave substantive feedback for bad grades on papers, and doesn't use her own rubric since I followed it when writing but got a D. Even sent my paper before due and she said I only needed to fix 1 thing and did, D. Response to every bad grade is "see rubric". just don't take ethics.
This class is impossible. There is very little work but the grading is insane. I would get Ds on every paper after specifically following the rubric and she would give no reason as to why I was getting that grade. There is one ridiculously graded assignment a week, either a discussion board or a paper. She will ask for an opinion and still give a D
I finished the semester by studying for many hours to achieve a 34/35 on the final exam to receive a 89.5 as my final grade. She said that she would only round ".2" up, and is just as much of a stickler when it comes to writing assignments. From taking calculus, c++, and writing, ethics ended up being my most challenging course with this teacher.
What a horrible woman. I took one of her classes and had to withdraw it (it was an online class) because I had to go to the hospital and she refused to let me take the exam when I got back. I've literally never had a professor this uncaring.
One of the hardest graders I have ever had. I have never gotten less than a "B" grade on any college paper until this class. To make it worse, there is next to no feedback about why papers are graded the way they are. If this class isn't a requirement, it's a class you should skip.
Definitely listen to the other reviews. She is a tough grader and I am not sure why. There are not many assignments either. I would not take this class unless youre really strong in Ethics and learning about philosophers.
Professor Arias is a gem! She loves what she teaches and is fun to be around! She also really wants to help you understand and succeed. I had so much fun in her class! She lays out her expectations and if you do the work with some effort you will pass easy!!
Vaguely worded and confusing essay prompts. Does not give feedback. You will have no idea why you received the grade you did. Test questions are sometimes subjective. One test question asked if philosophy was like self help? I answered no and got the question wrong. Meeting with her is pointless. She will rush you off the call.
While the professor is very nice, she tends to make a lot of mistakes. She often posts the weekly folders late and does not upload all of the assignments on time. I would not say that her class is "difficult," but I personally did not get much out of taking her class.
Passable class but no substance to it. I either got a 60 or 100. She gives generic copy and paste responses on feedback. Not hard to get along with but just a very go through the motions teacher.
The class is passable but the essays are TOUGH. I recommend reviewing & doing well in ENG 112 because you need to know how to write a satisfactory thesis & claims with evidence & citations. Unsatisfactory thesis? BOOM you're already deducted 25 points and essays weigh a lot. Get help early, revise work, follow the rubric. Arias is a strict grader.
I took this class online. The readings are kind of hard to understand but that may just be the language of ethics and not necessarily her. I do feel that she could provide a few examples in normal everyday language so that we can fully understand what the philosophers are talking about. Her writing assignments are hard.
This professor gives out her phone number for all of her students to contact her when they need help, which is nice. However, her grading is tough, she doesn't give great responses or feedback on graded items, and she is not very clear on the assignment directions. You can take her class, but if there are others available, I would take them first.
Can be tough when grading papers - my experience in this regard was a mixed bag. She loved one paper, disliked another... If you actively participate in the discussion boards you'll be graded fairly. Dr. Arias provided feedback on most of my assignments. She grades slightly to her taste, though. She loves animals - find a way to write about them.
I loved this class because I loved ethics (and so does she) so I may be biased. Arias is a great teacher and gives great feedback that will help you with her future assignments. It is a lot of writing since its an ethics class so make sure you have time to do papers and discussion boards. Overall do the work and feel confident and you will be fine!
Okay, so most of the bad reviews are for PHI 240. I took HUM 115 with her, and the class was completely fine. It was honestly my easiest class of the semester. If you just do your work on time, show effort, and participate, you can pass with an A+ easily. She also always gave good feedback on papers, even if it's just to respond with something nice
Terrible! The readings would not make sense and then when you do the homework it would not be related to the material that she gave us to study with. Terrible at leaving any feedback that makes sense and is not consistent with her grading. I wish I would have taken a different teacher or a completely different course. I am miserable in this class.
I wish I didn't take this class. She will give you material to study for the exams and nothing we learned will be on the exams. You can study for 2 hours with all the material that she gives you and still get a C on the exam. Terrible at giving feedback that is helpful. Wake Tech should get someone who knows how to teach this subject better.
I am not sure why Arias has recieved such a horrible rating. I am currently in her Ethics course and I find it very easy. If you focus on the assignments and use google to your advantage you will pass no problem. I understand that ethics can be a tough subject to grasp but if you use your resources such as the internet you'll ace the class.
The class seems easy because Arias only gives small assignments with the occasional essay or discussion board, but I would have given the rating i did if it was just that. Arias grading is terrible to say the least. You do what you are told and get either a 70 or 100. The feedback/advise she gives is so generic, WHICH you think you followed.
She lists in her syllabus not to expect an a in this course because "ethics is hard". Meanwhile I took ethics at a 4 year university and already received an a, the school just was not transfer friendly. I ended up with a high b in the class..... do not think it was a coincidence. She would give low grades on writing assignments with 0 explanation.
She would not give a ounce of thought if you had technical issues.
Was a very easy class, assignments were not difficult at all. Worst thing is that she is pretty lazy, reuses the same rubric which makes no sense on some assignments. If you actually write meaningful stuff and not just what you think she wants to hear then youll get a better grade.
I took a fairly short ethics class (8 weeks) during the 2024 Fall semester, so technically the material was not packed in, as we just needed to learn the very basics and surface level of ethics. Professor Arias always welcomed us when we entered the class and was very easy to talk to. They are very caring and talked charismatically.
Arias' ethics course can be hit or miss, but with a little effort, you can succeed. The workload is manageable, and Unstuckstudy proved helpful for exam prep. Participate actively, and she'll grade you fairly.
Did not like her at all. Her grading criteria is inconsistent and she grades far too harshly for a general education course. You do exactly as you are supposed to on an assignment and you still fair. She needs to realize that the majority of the people in these classes are not interested in ethics. Relax your grading criteria and loosen up.
Do not take this class Literally I read all the given material which I think they make themselves and I go to take the quizzes and it has absolutely nothing to do with what I just read so its not a me problem
You will learn nothing from her class. They cover three physics topics, but she teaches "nothing". All will be from the textbook, and nothing will be from her. Even for the exam questions. Her grading for papers is inconsistent and vague. Not enough guidelines. If you want to "do barely nothing and be fine with C", take this one.
Actually the worst professor I've ever had. Does not grade based on a rubric and grades based on her own opinions. You could follow the rubric exactly and receive a 70. Difficult to communicate with and has a crazy sense of entitlement. I'm fighting for my life.
I enjoyed my Critical Thinking class! The classwork was enjoyable and the online work was relatively light. I never had issues with grading from assignments, I just don't retain the textbook very well for tests.
This professor is a very tough grader and provides very little feedback. I did pass her class but it was very stressful.
She grades her papers rather harshly given she only gives you a week to write them, and her feedback is vague and really unhelpful. I will not pretend and say I gave my all in this class however she was there to support me at all because she only offered feedback a couple days after the essays were assigned.
