reminds me of my kindergarden teahcer =)..really easy to understand
Patient, clear, willing to help students, I like her enthusiasm.
Very enthusiastic...loves what she does.
Very Nice and Patient
very energetic and kind
Laughed at my questions. Nice web presentations though.
I'm not in the labs for the colours... :@

Very cheerful and energetic!! good prof
Funny teacher + very encouraging

The best professor in this god forsaken university

very nice prof!!
Im an incompetant imbecile when it comes to chem, so she made my chem labs tolerable.. This woman is genuine and friendly. She even said hi to me on the bus!
Very nice, kind and funny prof I've never seen! But it's quite hard ...
Excellent lab professor. She is very helpful, open to questions, and has a GREAT attitude. Definately one of the best professors out there.
She is the most enthusiastic prof I've ever met! She always says hi and offers to help you. Great teacher!
She makes this yucky course bearable!!! Always willing to help.
She is super enthusiatic! Very very helpful all the time and always wants everybody to learn in the lab...NOT JUST STUCKING UP FOR AN ACCEPTABLE PASSING MARK!!
She's super friendly that it's scary! She encourages everyone to do well. Pleasant person.
definitely the best prof i've seen at sfu besides thong so far. extremely enthusiastic..more like a friend than a prof, a very dedicated prof, they should promote her to an assistant prof =)
very nice and friendly prof...
very kind, helpful, inspiring, polite
Sophie Lavieri is an awesome professor. I've had her for both Chem 121 and Chem 126. She was great in both lab courses that I took, being very friendly and very encouraging. She's extremely approachable and always there to help.
Sophie Lavieri is a fantastic prof. Her love of chemistry certainly shows in her friendly and outgoing nature and she is always ready to provide extra help when needed.
Sophine is VERY VERY nice & REALLY REALLY helpful. The difficulty of the exams are reasonable(like what you expected).
Excellent prof, very enthusiastic! I'm just kicking myself for taking CHEM 122 (which I took along with CHEM 126) this semester with Dr. Ghandi because Sophie will be teaching it next semester.
AAAA+++
She is a great prof, explains concepts very well, she really cares about the students and how well they do, exams are moderate, and you learn a lot from this course
by making th exams very easy she becomes friend of lazy students. Good for lazy students not those who want to learn real chemistry.
she seems nice on the outside but shes not in the inside.....her exams are very tricky and she is not very clear about her expectation
She is BRUTAL!
She's very helpful, truly loves chemistry, and is truly interested in the success of her students. Additionally, the fact that her assignements are difficult yet she is well liked really says something!
Most energetic prof i had so far, glad i took both Chem122/126 with her, excellent!!
helpful and a very nice prof
Great prof all around. Fair exams. Very nice and very helpful.
her exams are sooo hard. i got a D with 68% in her class
Awesome prof, L-O-V-Es chem!! Loved the course w/her! The only thing is that the course is scaled. You can get a pretty bad grade w/like an 80! BUT, I LOVE HER!!!! =)
She is very enthusiastic and truly loves Chemistry! Fun, happy prof!
Okay. She's a really nice person but I detested this course. The labs are all so rushed, the stress is just brutal. Eventually I associated her peppiness and voice with feeling terrible. So maybe i'm biased that way.
awesome prof!!! she is great!! just some of the quizzes are kindda hard!
really helpful, and friendly
Very enthusiastic during lab sessions. She obviously has great passion about chemistry. Lab quizzes are, at most times, fair. Sometimes she picks the most inappropriate times to discuss things with the class(eg.in the middle of an experiment).I wish she would give more time to do the report sheets
I thought this course was easy! Great attitude, nice person, great notes, and HUGELY ENTHUSIASTIC, I don't know what she puts in her coffee, but I want some of that!
She's so cute and joyful. She likes what she does and is very organized and precise. Her accent is a little hard to break through and she REALLY likes pop quizzes.
SOOOO NICE!!! SHe is one of the best profs that I have had here. Her exams are totally fair, and she will go to awesome lengths to help her students. The report sheets are a little too long, and we should be allowed more time to finish them.
very good lab instructor, despite her accent, she delievers her messages clearly, she knows whats shes doing and is always around to help, and she will always be able to answer your problems!
What a wonderfully cheerful lab instructor! Not angry like Hanlan. Will explain concepts to you if you have troubles and yes, despite the accent which isn't all that bad, she relays info to you very clearly. Happy and smiley to all, I have never seen her mad. I wish she was my mom :P
She's always happy and cheerful and very patient. A good teacher who explains things very well and doesn't get mad very easily.
she's the most enthusiastic n friendly prof! she's so interested in the subject n wants her students to do well. the labs r rushed n stressful though. if u'r takin chem 122 at the same time, make sure to schedule the lab at the end of the week so u can use the concepts learnt in class!
Amazing prof, she's so helpful and enthusiastic about chemistry and teaching.
she a great lady. Besides the fact the labs ere long, she really made a great effort to keep us interested and gives us a laugh or two. very apporoachable and friendly! i'm signing up for chem 281!! that's how nice she is!
her first time lecturing this summer semester. Could not teach and is exremely confusing! exams were long...midterm ave was 60%. maybe she'll improve from this semester.
summer semester 2005.I thought the avearage was 62.Dat average was pretty decent. Yeah her first midterm was long; however, she made her second midterm short. She listened to students complaints and is very helpful.Anyone can go to her room at anytime for help. She's very caring, very much like highschool teachers.I'm sure if students do their hw

Though some of her lectures are disorganized and can be hard to understand at times, she really cares that students do well and understand the material in the course. Very approachable and is receptive to comments/concerns of students.
Lectures seemed disorganized at first, but improved as we went along. More than willing to help any student during office hours, and always trying to find ways to give students more marks. The cheat sheets were a big help on exams - 1-sided pg. for 2nd m.t., 2-sided for final. Can pretty much shove whole course on if you write small enough.
Sophie is incredibly friendly and helpful and she does a brilliant job of encouraging her students to do their best. Made labs very enjoyable.
she explains things very slow. it's almost as if she thinks you are mentally handicapped. but it works if you listen to her. tests are quite fair as long as you pay attention and don't laugh the whole class at her foreign expressions.
She has a great personality. She is my favourite professor.
Sophie is my most favorate prof. on earth. very helpful and caring.she really cares about every single student and their mark.she tries to spend as much time in her office in case someone come to her with a question....just if she was teaching chem 282..... anyways take the course with her and follow her notes you will ace the course.
I still cannot understand why she becomes a teacher.
She is a very sweet and helpful professor who more than cares for the students. Generally, her presence makes you quite comfortable. She never seems to carry the "stamp" of a Professor, that you will notice in most others; she behaves more like a friend. Regarding her tests, I think they are quite straight forward as long as you put in efforts
A great prof, very helpful and friendly.cares for students.
^^; not very good at teaching lectures..she's better in the labs..i got her for chem 122..she's like a grandmother figure, really nice and friendly, her exams were ok though.
One of the best profs I've had. She truly cares that her students succeed and makes an effort to ensure they do. Labs aren't too bad if you put in an effort (helps to have a smart lab partner too). I hate chem and never understood it, so if you're like me you'll probably bomb the final (51%) but I still got a B, so not bad.
The best lab instructor I have had. Delivers hilarious pre-lab lectures and is extremely helpful/approachable during the lab. Made chemistry fun and interesting. You can even get bonus marks. Final exam was fair.
Probably the sweetest lady ever. And a great prof. Someone does care about you in university..she's one of them!
Worst prof ever in my life.. so unorganized and devil-minded. She used different textbook which was much better and easierly explained than what we were told to use. She acts as if she were just so nice and warm. Plz don't get taken by it.
Very friendly and approachable. Thick accent which made it challenging to understand her. Good TAs and her as a prof makes for a pretty fun lab, although the write ups can be every long.
come in my children and have your 5 min quiz..." lol i had her for the summer..haha she's really good in chem :D she's really friendly =)
Awesome prof, really helping and considerate. Remembers her students and meets u like a friend outside the class. SMILE and take any class with her.
I hate chem labs, and I still do. But Dr.Lavieri is nice and understanding. Although average is high and scaled, still got an A-. I recommend taking this course with her.
Best Lab prof ever!!! before i hated chem, but her style of teaching has encouraged me to see the brighter side of chem. Very patient and lets us take lab reports home (if you are monday lab).we made icecream for our final lab ^-^... Too bad she wont be teaching for 4 semister after this T.T it was a blessing to have her for both 121 lab and 126
Well the good news is that she's a nice and helpful prof, and also that the powerpoint presentations and prelab assignments make the labs pretty easy because you're pretty much doing the same thing that you did in the prelab. The bad news is that it is hard to study for the final because they won't let you see your quizzes and report sheets.
this is a prof that actually gives a**** about students. wonderful professor, but very bad course material. i always felt lost during the labs, TAs are always bored as hell, they dont care they just wanna go home hahaha. lot of WORK for little grades.
I LOVE HER
make sure you don't have her as your lecture prof. she cannot speak english well at all, so imagine she is trying to explain chemistry to you! seriously my mind not biased, i know she is a nice lady and wants to help, but she really is not useful. her lectures are not as useful/punctual as expected for a 200 level organic chemistry course.
she's crazy weird! you will laugh at her every class..she had an accident and claims she suffers from memory loss and gets frustrated when she can't remember things. as far as her tests go they are so easy...a little too easy for what you are expecting. very nice and CARES so much about your grade, we even got a cheat sheet the size of a full page.
this prof blasts thru reaction synthesis + mechanism it aint even funny.. so you better do a**** load of reading
this prof blasts thru reaction synthesis + mechanism it aint even funny.. so you better do a a lot of reading
Very disorganized prof, had 70 pages of slides in a 50 minute lecture and expect you to be able to know it all in 30 seconds of showing it. If any questions are asked she loses the flow of lecture very easily. Terrible prof, but easy exams except for the final, even though we had a cheat sheet learned nothing in lectures, textbook was a life saver.
i have her as my lab instructor and SHE IS AWESOME! keeps a very positive attitude, i always have butterflies before going into our lab but somehow she makes them go away! lol i think its her wonderful personality and bright smile that does it! suddenly i dont hate chem labs as much....
USE THE TXTBOOK!!! In her class, the textbook is your bible. Know the textbook and you pass the class- Its simple as that.

SOPHIE is an excellent professor. This is a hard course and you have to work hard at it to do well. I LOVE HER!
Class was a breeze. She is just awesome.
FINAL WAS RIDICULOUSLY EASY. don't believe the comments below! final is not tough she gives you a cheat sheet and you can literally squeeze the entire course on there. GPA BOOSTER
Final was same length as midterms but much easier, and textbook readings were extremely mandatory since lectures don't help, she also gives inclass quizzes and weekly loncapa, which are long also but worth only 5%
Lavieri's exams are very fair, and the cheat sheet (full page) for the final is a life saver when it comes to the reactions section (esp. since she blasts through that at the end). The lect + tut are helpful for the relevant examples, and during lecture, do not get up to leave... she'll point you out. Other than that, great prof =)
Sickeningly enthusiastic but very nice lady.
This prof insists that all her students are stupid people. Lectures are pretty much a waste of time, keeps asking silly questions about common sense knowledge: "Do you guys know what a meter stick is?" I felt like a twelve year old.
She is a very nice prof. very helpful, always willing to answer questions.exams are VERY easy, just read the book and go over the examples.Long-capa based on the examples in the book, not hard.the 1st midterm are some terms and 2ed just some calculations, same in the testbook. Recommend course:P
I was terrified of chemistry before entering this class but she really does go out of her way to make sure that eveyrbody is able to do the work. You can tell that she cares about her students and loves chemistry! I would recoomend her and hope to have her in later chem courses.
She is a very friendly and helpful Lab Instructor. Explains what to do before hand and tells u what you should expect or if there are any twists in the labs. Most of her TA's are condescending asses and when you ask a question they look at you as if you've done the lab 4 times already like them.
Hard to understand sometimes, kind of anal about some things. Otherwise, an okay instructor
Passionate about subject. Makes things fun.
Shows enthusiasm. Makes things fun.
Love her classes! She's enthusiastic and knows what she's talking about, and answers questions concisely and accurately. Her marking is fair, on the easy side. As long as you pay attention in class, which isn't hard, you'll get a good grade.
BEST Professor!!! Enthusiastic and extremely helpful.
Incredibly enthusiastic. This Professor epitomizes a passion for teaching. She genuinely cares about her students, and their ability to learnt he material.
the style of teaching is confusing
Sophie's a really nice prof. Her labs are straightforward business, marking based on accuracy and equations. For the exams, be sure to go over the lon-capa questions & lab intros in the manual! Both lab final and midterm were pretty tough, so come prepared! Overall, a pretty decent chem course.
her teaching is confusing and don't listen to her about midterm b/c it will be different from loncapa and exp...just go to office hour and ask ta's for help.
Sophie is a passionate prof! Very nice to her students. But in her class you are mostly on your own. Study her notes. She likes her own lec notes. Go to her office hours, and TAs are helpful too. Put in your effort then you shouldnt end up so bad.
She was a fantastic lab instructor. She was friendly, helpful and definitely not condescending. Her instructions were helpful and I enjoyed her labs.
Nice professor but is not able to communicate lab ideas effectively. The lab writeups are easier than 121, but the midterms are on the hard side.
Very nice professor, lab with her is super easy. Midterms were on the more difficult side, class avg was ~60% for each, but questions were based on lon-capa and lab descriptions. Lab write-ups were worth 50%, so make sure you put some effort into them! I didn't do well on the two midterms, but ended up with B+ in the course b/c of high lab marks.
Horrible as a lab professor. Very hard to understand her accent.
If you can understand her through her accent the labs are very easy. The report sheet are based on Loncapa or from the lab manual. Beware though, my TA and a lot of my friends' TA are horrible! Just fallow the manual and you do well.
Terrible time trying to understand her accent. Her demo's at beginning were slow and pointless, the questions arent that hard follow lab manual and what you learned in lecture to do well.
Sophie is hands down one of the most compassionate professors at SFU. She genuinely cares about her students and she's always willing to lend a hand if you need it. 8 out of the 11 labs are easy, the others require a bit more thinking, but prelabs will prep you well. Midterms were definitely difficult, final average was 51%!
She's just average. Doesn't reply to many emails and kind of just passes you on to TAs for everything, even though she is a teaching prof and not a research prof. Way too many questions on the Midterm for the time given. I think when a prof sees that 98% of the class didn't finish on time, this should indicate something is wrong.
Hands down one of the nicest profs I've ever had. SHe's just not very good at teaching. Time better spent looking at the material in the textbook
Sophie is by far one of the best profs I've ever had, and for sure the nicest. Very helpful in labs when you screw up, and is more than happy to help you understand concepts. Most labs were fair, a few had some harder calculations, but most were based off of Lon-Capa. Midterms were hard~50% for both, but most of your mark is based off of lab work.
First off she's an extremely nice lady and loves being around and helping her students. Most of the labs weren't too bad except a couple that ran the whole time and a couple with long calculations. For midterms make sure you go over loncapa questions and go over all of the labs in detail as that's were most of the questions come from.
She has a heart of gold, and I could tell she takes her job seriously. She goes over time a lot and is always concerned whether her students are paying attention (will call you out if you are texting) so that was extremely irritating. She also is not very clear with certain concepts. But overall she's average.
Not good. Don't be fooled by her appearing "helpful". Doesn't ask what u thought about exams (full of mistakes), but she wouldn't know b/c she wasn't there. Final exam way too hard. Full of things we didn't learn. Doesn't guide u by giving homework. Control freak re: cell phones/tablets. Doesn't allow them even tho students use them to take notes.
Easy A in this class.
