Impossible to fail his course; no need to go to his class
Don't take his 200 level courses, he's a killer!
No idea what he is trying to teach in class
not necessary to attend lectures, just read the textbook
Easy to A on 101, Easy to B on 102
just read the textbook...
boring. lectures useless. easy midterm but hard final
Exams based on Textbook... Tricky Questions! (Get a Good TA!!!)
Boring classes...... too many notes to copy...!!!!
easiest course at UBC if u take lemche...gateman is hardass
Lectures are dull and unclear. Read the textbook and memorize for success.
Easy as hell, no need for lectures, is quite comical
Just memorize the textbook and you will be fine
godd teacher
Boring & useless lectures. Too many notetakings.
A nice guy
He has gotten a lot harder based on his reputation. Actually have to keep up to do well now
You'll never get a test back because so many of his own answers are wrong. Uninformative, boring lectures.
Useless lectures, but funny how he tries to get in peoples' face when they're talking. Tests are easy. He's an easy going guy. Just say you can't make it to the test, and you'll have an extra week or two to study for it.
face is as red as apple. GO TO THE COFFEE SHOP IF U WANNA TALK !
jus read the study guide and d/l online notes
too much notetaking and lectures are useless, but other than that, he is a funny teacher and working on the study guide basically will give u a mark of a B! haha
LAME! Unfair, because the make-up exams are not nearly as hard as the original ones and it's easy to find an excuse to write the make-up instead. Boring, useless, should be fired!
Run for your life!
Worst lectures ever! Boring and uninformative. Stay home and read your textbook instead.
Spends alot of time with the schnapps. HE should go to the coffee shop and sober up.
he is the worst prof of all... boring lectures and still wanna keep everyone focus on him by putting ppl who are talking on the spot.. too much noting taking!
lots of notes to copy but follows about 95% of textbook so missing a few classes won't hurt too much. tests are quite fair so no complaint about that just do the study guide lots
midterms and finals are easy. classes are boring.
Lectures are a HUGE waste of time.. He just puts slides up that are straight from the book.. Read your textbook, do the study guide questions, ace the exams...
don't like either Gateman or Lemche's teaching. Gateman's funny but tough. Lemche's boring though easier than Gateman. Neary Hugh's the best of all!
Hey! don't talk up there.. go to the coffee shop if you want to talk hehe you guys remember that?
who said he is easy? maybe he was, but not anymore, his final worth 75%!!!! and it was hard--- esp. his tricky MC
No Comments
I can teach much better than him. Anybody can simply take the highlighted parts from the textbook, and read out examples from the textbook. Doesn't take a PhD to do so
I went for 6 classes total for micro and macro combined. Didn't open my books until 8 hours before each exam. My marks were 84% and 86%. EZ!
very instable

He could be boring sometimes (b/c he teaches right out of the text), but not that bad. If you really like econ, you wouldn't mind going to his class. On the other hand, skipping them wouldn't hurt either :p
A great teacher!
The only really good things about him, is that he teaches totally from the text, so you can basically skip all his boring classes.
don't waste time, skip ALL classes, just show up for Midterm and Final.
Super Easy
he sucks
INSOMNIACS: Lemche is a miracle drug. Dont even bother taking notes in his class, that is, if you choose to attend, which isnt at all necessary. Read the texts and go to the McGraw-Hill website and you are set.
omg.. his midterm was so hard!
The only reason why i stay awake in his class is because his accent is hilarious... he seems to have some real issues with telling the class to be quiet and singling studentes out... "Hey you!"... "Yeah you in the stripes"...
the midterm was so damn hard!
I hated his class.Didnt' learn anything.
ha it is funny that gateman got yellow face but lemche get purple face! people who give purple face for lemche should try gateman stuff.Ha maybe they will give gateman a fxxx instead of faces.hahahaha
had him back in 2001, he wasn't the clearest, mumbled a bit during lecture, kind of funny, pointed out those that were disruptive... took make-up midterm which was EASY... final was avg... the key to his class seems to be memorization
Why go to class or even study hard? His notes are 100% the same as the book. His exam is 110% the same as the book. Study hard, understand concept = useless. Just memorize the book. I thought exams are supposed to test for knowledge and not for memory
Does not teach, basically recites the textbook. Don't bother going to class just memorize the textbook and spit it out on the exam. If you can get out of the class.
If you are a person who can learn material from a textbook without the aide of a teacher then you will do fine. However, if you take a class expecting the prof to teach then you will be dissapointed.
Lemche was very clear as to what the required material was for the course (=knowing the textbook inside out). His lectures were completely based on the text. The exams however were poorly assembled in terms of material tested,(lack of effort on his part
Should be easy 'cause the course is straight out of the text, but he's so boring he is hard. I stopped going halfway through the term, learned everything out of the text the week before, and got a B. Also, seemed disorganized with midterms, grade posting.
I took him 5yrs ago, and he was very easy, treated students like "adults". Taught effectively, made the material understandable (but it was easy to begin with).
Holy crap, it takes skill to be this boring! All he knows is the textbook -- he can't even answer students' questions.
everyone said he was easy. HEll NO ... he doesnt know how to teach. his exams are hard. no humour. worse prof ever in my opinion
I don't think he's that bad. If you are non-commerce major I suggest that you take his course. For commerce major I think Gateman is better.
BORING, BORING, CONFUSING!!!

He's the worst prof ever. His tests aren't easy, but it's the scaling that gets you the high mark.
His lectures are straight out of the book. All he does is make us copy down notes!! Not many people goes to class. His exams are hard. There isnt' enough time for you to finish.
I think it's not his fault that he has to teach a thousand students each Semester. So, blame the UBC for over-enrollment and increased tuition fees. I think you should go easier on him.
hes alright. just read the book and do the exercises and ull be fine. what more can u ask. His notes tests are straight from the book, so he cant trick u.
Total waste of time going to his lectures. Notes are 120% the same as the book. Exams are all based on book memorization. Are we tested on memorization or understanding of economics? You could get a high mark in this class w/o any learning of econonom
worst prof i ever had, email responses were rude. his lectures had no substance and was boring as hell!
Not a great teacher, not a horrible teacher. His lectures are directly from the text. I rarely went to class.
I tried going to his classes, but they just put me to sleep. So I skipped, memorized the textbook, and got a good mark. Goes off on tangents sometimes.
His notes are useful if you don't want to read the textbook. There's nothing to do for the course except for studying for the midterm and final.

I never go to class...need me to say more??
Lectures are 100% useless. Read the textbook and get the notes from online publisher. Nobody I knew went to this class and all got A or better, seriously. He is a lazy teacher who doesn't even make his own notes, he just prints them from online. Boring.
He is ingorant and wacky, just like his favourite country-the US. Would somebody get this guy a freaking Green Card, for God's sake? He is negligent in the coursework and doesn't even have a decent syllabus, for crying out loud.Shouldn't be teaching a
haha i thought lemche is not bad. i dont' care is his funny or not. i just need to get better mark. it is better than some profesor always emphasize how funny his class is but always makes some freaky hard finals at the end.
I didn't listen to his lectures nor did I take any notes. I usually don't go to his classes but when I do, I'm doing something else :) Nevertheless, I got an A just by reading the textbook!

i think he's not a really awesome teacher, but econ, it's just something everyone gets. he says he also teaches at some college. I think he should have stayed there. but eh, he did make a rational decision to come here, a "smart for him dumb for us&q
Brutal. I would chew off a leg to get out of his lectures. Quite possibly the worst instructor at UBC. In all honesty, just avoid this guy... he has no passion for the material he is presenting and no comprehension of what makes econ interesting.
Lemche may not be the greatest "lecturer", but his classes and exams are consistent with the text material, so there will be no surprises in the end.
Lemche is a pretty brutal prof, but read the text and study guide and his exams are easy. I actually just stopped going to his class, but read the book and guide and did really well in the class
FUNNY! but that's just me. Just do the textbook and study guide questions (especially the textbook) and you'll pass with flying colours
Decent guy, but incredibly boring, has no rapport with the class at all as he drones on and on. Material was equally tedious.
Clear, helpful, friendly, and considerate
extremely boring!!!talks quietly in monotone but speaks with an accent so u cant understand him anyway...supposedly easier than gateman but thats not true!!i got the same mark with both even tho gateman's supposed to be harder..gateman is more interesting
i like this course a lot, very interesting

he is a grandfather-sort figure, and I think he's really cute/funny in a little old man way. haha. Must just be me. Its much better if you can up close in his lectures, then he caters to you more. Not a bad class, some people on here are much too harsh.
Cracks some funny jokes, but very boring lectures. He tends to ramble on a lot. He's just not that interesting.
Tests based heavily on the textbook, his notes ARE online (they are on the textbook website), even though he says they are not. He's boring, I hated his class, but tests are fairly straightfoward.
lemche man is nothing like gateMAN, wow he likes to be a carpenter ME TOO~!!! but overall, i think econ would make me love gateMAN more. zing YAO!
Course mark based exclusively on exams. Downscales grades (by 10% or more) for students who write deferred exams. Boring lectures, unable to keep classroom quiet.
basically just reads u da text book in an unclear manner~ u'd rather read da text than attend his b0ring lectures.. (btw..R U TALKING IN MY CLASS!?) lol
He is sooooo nice!!!He's like a grandfather type man. so kind, helpful understanding. but i find his midterm a bit hard. just so many questions and not enough time. but after all, i like his class! he's a nice prof:)
Like wut the other guy said below: even tho Lemche is *supposed* to be easier than Gateman's KILLER exams.... NOT EVERYTIME! I actually end up getting a LOWER mark (10% lower) in Lemche than Gateman! I guess if u r confident in memorizing facts from text: take Lemche. Otherwise, hv fun w/ Gateman =)
ohhh how mcuh i hate econ. the midterm was NOT easy.. and i heard Lemche was suppose to be easier than Gateman- I wish i had just been in Gatemen's class would have been harder i hear but at least not as boring as Lemches.. I can't sit through Econ.. WAYY too boring. sucky class.

this dude isnt a bad teacher he does just read from the text but he tries to help you out if you have questions he makes some funny jokes in class but its hard to stay awake to hear them
Class? What class...all you need to do is read the textbook because that's what he does anyways. He throws in a couple comments about "Mothter Russia" and he thinks that teached everythin about econ. Oh well, buy low, sell high...Thanks Lemche
lemche is not as bad as some pple said he is. his notes are helpful when reading the text and doing the questions later, so i found showing up in class DOES have its merits. he answers questions and does a good job. however, what he says during the lectures is essentially useless.
His notes are straight out of the text and he doesn't really explain them any better than the book does (sometimes he makes it more confusing). But there are no assignments other than the exams so if you are an 'independent learner' then it's fine.
If you steal his slides, you can get away without buying the book. I like his teaching style though. His lectures are not that fun-filled but he knows his stuff well and when questioned gives answers that are consistent with what was taught.
Economics is my elective. I joined it to learn about the subject. Not to read the text bk. lemche is like a walking text bk. I would advise taking gateman if you want to learn anything. Otherwise just take lemche if ur an independent learner
lemche is so boring. all of his lectures and notes are straight out of the book and he doesnt really explain the material. if youre really really bored though, try to count how many times he yells at the class to be quiet...i swear it helped keep me awake!
sigh...wut can i say? his class is boring and final wasn't all that "easy" (like everyone's told me)...so my suggestion would be "take gateman's"...simply becuz u learn more! >< in lemche's class, i had to self-learn everything by reading the textbook...which was pretty brutal!
Unless there's major scaling for the final. I am doomed to repeat. His lectures were terribly boring and unhelpful. Just read the book. Do all the examples at the end of each chapter... They are really quite helpful.
Very lazy prof. I wouldn't know if his notes were copied from the textbook because of the fact that i couldn't stand to sit in his class. Final was ridiculous. You are basically paying money to read the economics textbook. Make sure you hand in your tests to the TA Ning Huang if shes still there
I don't know what people are complaining about. You can't expect someone to spoon feed the information into your mouth. Yes he's boring. Make sure you know the textbook like the back of your hand and you'll do awesome. Doing the textbook questions helps too. :)
Lemche and his class were horrible. The final was also a lot harder than expected.
His monotone lectures are basically slides from the textbook publisher's website. Our midterm was from chapter1-5; final was ch1-12,14.He basically "taught" us 8 chapters in about a month. The final was unexpectedly hard. The only good thing was his habit of scaling the class avg to 68%.
boring lectures and hard exams. but i'm not sure if i should take gateman, he seems as hard as lemche... tough decision for econ 102 next term!!
It's very extreme. like someone said above, you either do REALLY, SUPERBLY well in it. or you just fail out totally. there's little room for in between. and the scaling makes no sense, although most students do benenfit from it. just....the key to the exams are HIS EXAMPLES! (in class or book)
The scaling was unbelievable. Somebody got a +20% boost while others got 4% (e.g 85 becomes 100). Oh ya, and don't be fooled by those ppl who are getting 95% and above in his class. They are the ones who failed once already, and thanks to them, the class average was painstakingly pulled up to a 68.
sooo friggin hard.. i didn't even pass anything but i got scaled up like 5 percent and barely passed.. and his lectures were so boring and long!!!
did not even realize bell curve grading b/c i never went to class after studying the day of midterm and scoring 75. checked my final exam (54), final grade 61, adj. to 81?! not complaining. easy if you read the book, no need to go to class if you don't want to. final exam hurt by studying for others
He's like a robot...comes in, tells you to be quiet twenty times, threatens to leave, then reads essentially out of the textbook, occasional story about his son, tests were tough...not necessary to go to class, just find someone who did and get their notes...
**** both lemche and gateman. Just b/c econ101 and 102 are required. I wonder if UBC can get some 'real' professors.
not the best professor but he's a very nice person
Is he ever gonna retire? at least he is hot...
HORRIBLE!!! He mumbles and lectures consist of him summarizing the textbook. I've fallen asleep in his class a couple of times. He's boring and spends half the class telling us to be quiet. Take Gateman's class, trust me, you'll be glad you did.
retarded grading... he is a horrible prof, he barely knows wtf he's talking about. He memorized the book himself and expects you to do the same. There will be no mark difference if you don't step into his class whatsoever.
I got yelled @ for talking in class~~ seriously, going and not going to class makes no difference
Lectures consist of prof throwing a hissy fit and threatening to leave. Need I remind him that OUR tuition pays his salary? Maybe he that would encourage him to respect his students a bit more. He is the reason I only attended one lecture for the entire course.
Lemche merely reads the textbook to you. He shows absolutely nothing else except text summaries. He is very disorganized and lazy. It makes no difference if you to to lecture or not. Get Gateman if you can, at least he is creative in his lectures and seems knowledgable about economics.
Merely reads from the book....very unorganized --> wastes time telling unfunny jokes and stories, then rushes us to death at the end of class (also applies to the term as a whole). Yes, attending class is NOT a necessity...
asked my friend a question (about something he said) and he flipped. read your textbook and do the questions at the end of each chapter and in your study guide. doesn't assign homework (unlike gateman) so you don't bother going to tutorial/class
No Comments
Either bring a pillow to class, or don't go to class.
yes he was once easy... but NOT ANY MORE... i atteneded most of his class... but learnt absolutely nothing....
Ahh, Lemche, Lemche Lemche... I went to class two weeks in 1st term and none 2nd.Lots of what u read below is true. I don't really encourage going to class b/c it really is a waste and time could be better spent. make notes for each ch. in text and DO (and understand) questions @ back of book.
Most of the time you won't know what he is talking about. The opportunity cost of going to his class is high. He just mumbles and yell at students. Class avg on finals are usually 40%..this guy would be fired if he didn't scale the marks at the end..everyone gets 20%+
No point going to class/lectures. Unhelpful. Just read the text, it's so easy to understand.Inconsistent midterms.keeps changing the format, so no point asking past students what was on it. You'll think you did fine on the exams, but end up bombing them...what sort of answers does the man want?!
EVER EVER take his class because 1)everything comes out of the text, class is a waste of time, 2) unorganized with grading, he lost my midterm and did not try very hard to look for it 3) the exam questions sometimes can be quite bizzare and perhaps not relevant to what you've learned.
I didn't learn ANYTHING from his lectures and I went to every single one of em like it was a second religion. All my learning came from the book. The midterm and final are just plain weird-just random questions. But I did well in his class b/c I knew the book. Moral:read ur book at least 3 times
Stupid prof that tells his student every class. Boring lectures, don't have to go to his class..just memorize the textbook. His marking is screwed up because he scales his tests. He gave the ppl who wrote the make up test a bump because the average was not the same as the midterm. Avoid him.
Soren is an example of teacher, I wish there were more profs out there like him. Attend all his lectures the are very useful. The exams are very easy.
This prof is WAY too boring! His lectures are useless because he just reads you the textbook. He's not helpful at all and his exams do not stress on the important subjects of the course! AVOID HIM!
Memorize the textbook and you'll be fine, especially when you'll probably get a 10%+ scale.
DON'T DO IT!! GO TO GATEMAN!!
unless you can recite the whole textbook, avoid taking lemche... took his class and ended up with A- (after scaling)with out learning a thing... then took gateman's class and got A+ (but the gist is that I DID LEARN STH!! take gateman!!don't waste $4XX !!!!)
boring
Perhaps it's because he teaches too many sessions, Lemche has no clue what he's said and what he's not said in class. So hang on in class when he amuses himself with the same old joke that he's told dozen times before, and use your TA well!!
I think I only went to about a thrid of the classes and I still did really well. It wouldnt have mattered if I had gone to more because I would have been asleep...yawn
Well... if you read textbook, and try to memorize every detail, you'll do fine (after scaling). Never went to a class.. memorized the whole book, and got 92% (after 15% scaling). However, be in mind that the class average WAS 52%... i would NOT take the chance... i would goto Gateman instead as he is MUCH MUCH better (although i did worse in 101)
Oh all you naive first year rookies, lets examine the two choices:(1)Gateman - loud, tries too hard to be funny, unique, but confusing notes & very hard tests (2)Lemche - monotone, repetitive, but clear notes and easier tests (if u read the text). Easier tests = better mark = MBA school = more income = more consumption. U decide.
Why does he mumble? He's got this weird way of talking... besides, if I can just read the textbook, why bother listening to him telling me what's already in the textbook? I think the text gives me a better idea than he does. He doesn't teach, he just repeats. does he expect people to take in what he's saying when we're all copying things?
I never fail a course in my whole life, until NOW! Among the 12 courses I attempted, I got 6 A+, 3 Bs, 2 C+. Although it's not VERY good, I don't think my transcript looked too ugly. But NOW it IS UGLY. I FAIL!! Perhaps I didn't work hard enough, but it's really hard to copy the notes (lots) and listen to what he says at the same time.
The professor is definitely quite useless. However, if you want to add another 100% on your transcript, his class is perfect for you. Because of his outrageous scaling methods, you can easily get 100% if you're brilliant, and you can do it without even going to class.
wow, not only is he boring, but he keeps telling his students to be quiet for no reason. condemns having fun in his class. and quite useless. just read the textbook.
Classes are boring. Exams are not really related to classnotes.
lemche's final exams are a joke! it's as if he read the chapter headings of the textbook the night before, and wrote 10 short-answer questions based on the textbook headings. forget copying down the notes, just memorize the textbook. it worked for me and i did pretty darn well both terms =)
Horrible. Final seemed to have nothing to do w/ what he talked about in class. Midterm was just a bunch of memorizing of the text book. Take Gateman if u can, avoid Lemch at all costs.
teaches straight out of text... WHY ARE YOU HERE????!
STOP COMPLAINING! his classes may be boring and repetitive, but your learning and chances are his class will bump up your avg for your core courses in BCOM which means its OK for you to suck in othr clases (calc) SO SUCK IT UP.. READ THE TXTBK and youll be pleasntly surprised. ps.lemche is a nice guy, bad humor, kinda dorky..but a genuinely nice guy
i think he's sweet, if nobody wants to do anything in class then that is their own problem.
Lemche is by far the WORST prof I've ever had. He uses his lectures to espouse his political beliefs as if they're facts. It's despicable. He teaches straight from the test and does as little work as possible. He's lazy and worthless.
Very easy course, nice guy but the exam is too easy for the course so he doesn't need to teach anything. Don't go to his lectures and self-study and you'll end up with 95%.
This guy is awesome. He can be dull at times but his bad humour makes up for it. He does care for students if you bother about the course. mid term was mainly out of the text and study guide. very passionate about the course
This guy is the most boring teacher ever. No point going to class just read out of the textbook.
so unclear, he usually mumbles
It's a mixed feeling. He makes the class so excruciatingly painful that I HATED his class which resulted in my lack of interest in studying for this course. However, in hind sight, he IS relatively easier than Gateman if you can get past his boring-ness and try to study on your own.
Lemche teaches from the textbook, which is good, cuz... you just read the textbook and do the questions and you'll be fine for the mt and the final. And also major scaling, so i mean Gateman's more interesting, but Lemche will get you a higher mark. I prefer Lemche and you learn econ either way by reading the text.. so Lemche > Gateman
finals are off the text book (80% atleast). major scaling. humourous in a weird way. no need to go for his classes (all thou i went for all of them and ended with a 90%...because off my TA)
Lemche is a boring prof with notes that are directly from the textbook, but he's easier than Gateman. His tests are tedious, but if you study, you'll ace them, and the scaling is ridiculous, if u can manage a raw score that's an A/A-, then ur basically guaranteed 100%.
This is the easiest prof ever, and he's actually a really nice and helpful guy. His class averages are higher than gateman's and his textbook is, wow, actually resellable unlike gateman's. You want a high grade? Go with Lemche. You want to learn Economics? Go with Gateman.

no point going to class. his notes are all over the place. i heard he was easy before. not anymore.
very nice guy but ...i think the exam is harder than before and the teaching is not improving...
U know what.........this dude is a joke! he is not a good economics teacher at all?? his lectures are merely useless when i took the final cuz the questions on the test were all open-ended >< If i am in charge of UBC this dude will be fired as soon as possible!
Don't need to go to class. Just read ur freaking text
BORING TEACHER NEEDS TO UPDATE HIS WAYS OF TEAChING.. to the 20th century not just reciting notes
He should get fired by UBC long long long long long long long long long time ago. Also, his exams are not as easy as bofore. Doing the Study Guide won't be enough.
This guy is great he is so funny in class!
zzzzzz....zzzzzzz...zzzzzzz...his lectures make u wanna sleep
I don't know why UBC hired him as econ prof. The midterm was so hard, and he didn't teach anything. All he have done was putting notes on the overhead, and those notes are all straight out of the text. I will NEVER take econ again.
He is such an easy prof, it's quite ridiculous. Anyone who complains about how hard he is need to do a little bit of studying with the textbook.
Slide after slide of complete and utter boredom. How many times do we need to hear about Button City?
Register with him, but attend Gateman's lectures. His exams aren't as easy as before, but easier than Gateman's. You still need to study with either prof. There is no free lunch.
His exams might have been easy before, but at least for 102, it was not fun. All essay style questions. And his lectures are terrible, he just kind of rants for an hour with his projector notes, straight from the textbook as a sort of visual backdrop. And if I had a nickel for everytime he stopped lecturing to say, "Could you please be quiet?"..
He's boring, yes. but he's a nice guy if you don't talk during class. exams are much easier than gateman's.
Shoot me now... Exams are easiER than gateman's but lectures were so boring that I stopped going, reading the book, etc. so in fact did worse on his exams. Uuuugghhh Totally regret taking this :(
teaches right from the book
Nice prof. Always available to help u. Good to stop noisy "bees" talking (I hate the gossip around.) No fun in his lecture. Exams not as easy as before.
PROS: exams are easier than Gateman's (not easy, easier). CONS: where do I start - Lemche is the most boring prof EVER! Overall, I spent about 5 days (TOTAL) studying for the course, skipped all classes but one, and didn't touch the study guide - ended up with A minus. I took Gateman's class for Econ 101, got A plus. See the difference?
Read the text and do the questions! U'll get an A and no need to go to school.
I bring my laptop to class and watches movies and series I download. The class is so boring and he basically reads the textbook to you. If I haven't put this class in the middle of my other 2 class I would have skipped. Tests are easy though :D do the study guide, some questions are taken straight out! 02-03 :D
Lemche. You were my favourite teacher at UBC. I feel like I can relate. Lemche is awesome!!! He tells good jokes and stories to illustrate his points. I reccomend everyone in the world takes his class. More importantly, take econ 102 also.
awful
No Comments
Exams are extremely long and focus on details. Rumour has it he heard that he was easier than Gateman and so increased the level of difficulty.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? 101&102 are completely ridiculous. the two courses are designed for gr.10 - basically anyone who can calculate "slope" y=xm+b can do it. if you want some A+'s in ubc, definately take his 101&102...
His exams a lot more predictable than Gateman's. If you're the cautious type, select one of Lemche's section.
Class is boring, and yes the slides he shows are just the textbook reworded, but it is worth going to class even just to sit and do problems and read the chapter he's covering.
Well, what can I say about Lemche? He means well, he's a nice guy and is probably quite knowledgeable about economics. But as for conveying this knowledge to the class? Not so much. My advice: READ THE TEXTBOOK. Not kidding you, some of the questions on the midterm and final were straight from there. Attendence? It's your call....
didnt go to class at all..just read the txtbk and u'll be fine. even if his midterm/final arent that great, his scaling will make your gpa go up like crazy. we had a 17% boost. awesome
Don't blame professor. blame yourself first. He is pretty good teacher as I thought. Compared to gateman, gateman's class is way more funny than lemche's. However, basically all the material covered are same. Even though his exam was hard and scaled up to 17%, so what? I got A+. Is there any problem??
Attendence is a waste of time. Everything he teaches in lectures can be learnt in greater detail and understanding through the textbook. Most if not all questions on the midterm and final are from the textbook.
Even though his lecture is not as funny as Gateman's, he presents all the material clearly. His tests are fair, just read the textbook and do the exercises then you will be fine.
Overall a not bad prof. His lectures are helpful and he knows the material well. However, you should read ahead and prepare for the class in order to benefit the most from his lectures. He goes through the notes extremely fast so I suggest you either bring a laptop or camera! The exams are hard but the scaling helped a BUNCH.
very nice man but horrid teacher. just reads hs slides which are practically straight out of the text and talks to maybe the 3 ppl in the first row, doesn't engage class at all.. also quite unclear. made the mistake of taking him.. take gateman instead
very boring lectures but his tests are pretty fair... easier than gateman's exams
Easiest prof ever. Master the questions at the end of each chapter in the text and you'll do great. He's boring but Gateman's tests are a lot harder. go 58 in micro with econ and 89 with lemche in macro. Scales an insane amount
i love him. he's easy. why isnt he teaching in the summer? god......i wanna take his class!!
WAY BETTER THAN GATEMAN. First midterm with gateman (37%) first midterm with lemche (89%) SEE THE DIFFERENCE! I actually learned something. Goes by the book so its easy to anticipate what questions are going to be on the exams. Notes are clear and easy to follow
lectures are pretty easy to understand and can help consolidate understanding from the textbook. has a strict no-talking policy in class and doesn't encourage class interaction. however, course organization is easy to follow since it's exactly the same as the txtbk. so just read the txt and u shouldn't have any problems getting an A in this course
he's an audible text book, going to class is pointless, stay at home and read the text book, much better use of you re time and you learn a zillion times as much by your-self instead of paying attention to a dull grumpy person which rushes through a bunch of slides
To do List with Lemche: 1. Don't go to lectures 2. READ TEXTBOOK THATS ALL YOU NEED!!!
The lesser of two evils between himself and Gateman but ultimately, that's not saying much. Sinfully boring and brings nothing new to the subject matter. It's a good thing he's retiring.
(or ECON 102) Some people choose to stay at home and read the text and just come to class if they don't understand anything. It's a good elective for 1st years since it's a pretty easy course (he scales quite a bit at the end). Text highly recommended (you can virtually skip all the classes and just show up for the midterm and final).
I took his ECON102 last term. Skip all lectures, read your textbook and study guide 2 days before the exams, and you will get an easy A+. Highly recommended.
also 102..finally..he left UBC.....^^
He is able to relate his experiences in the industry with what he is teaching, which I found quite engaging. He would also bring in a bit of history as to why certain economic activities became the norm, ie wompum trading which the textbook does not cover. If you don't fall asleep in class, there's a lot to be had from his lectures.
Dont mean to be rude, but this prof is useless. I went to his lecture for 1 month and learned nothing outside the text book. I was planning to go to the last lecture only to evaluate him as "worst prof" but then I give up and thought it's worthless to even rate him like that.
Failed the course because there were no encouragement whatsoever from the professor. He didn't interest me enough to go to class, to read the book, nor to do the labs. Don't take take his classes!
Extremely boring. Notes are straight from the textbook. Don't bother going to class, towards the end no one shows up anyways because his notes are straight from the textbook. Your time is better spent elsewhere! Also, he is always trying to push his political conservative agenda.
Terrible. Boring, unclear and clueless about his students. He also makes untrue, uninformed comments about international issues and poverty on a regular basis which, quite frankly, are often so off the mark they're offensive. Overall absolutely miserable.
no comment
Going to his lectures are pointless cuz his notes are straight from the text & the online labs, which have unlimited attempts. Your time should be better spent elsewhere! But if you want easy professors, take him...
lectures are straight out of the book! no midterms!
No real need to go to his classes because the final questions are right out of the textbook or online labs. The final is now worth 89% of final mark!!MUST get study guide if you take his course.Students who are self learners and can keep up with chapters on their own should take this. If not, get Gateman!
Probably the most boring prof ive ever had. However, the class is easy as hell! No point in showing up to class (and i mean that). Read textbook = A+. THe online labs are soooo easy, because there is unlimited trials and the final is easier then expected (pretty much same questions from the online labs)
Your grade is made up from online quizzes (11%) and the final (89%). Class is really optional. To study for the exam, read the textbook, do the end of chapter questions, and review your online quizzes. You can't go wrong!
He only regurgitated the info from the book, which did not help to clarify certain aspects of economics theory. His lectures were monotonous and at time sleep-inducing...
Lemche IS HOT when it comes to choosing marks for economics because you can get an A so easily in his class! he can't teach but he's a really nice fellow. He's quite considerate to his students and very approchable if you go up to him and ask for help.
Why is this **** still teaching? He reads from the textbook and tells you to shut up during the lectures. This course is a mess.
Easily the worst professor I've ever had. There was no assessment of our work at all, we had a final worth 89% of the grade, and 11 labs that were done online and marked by the website. There was little to no preparation for the final. If it were not for the textbook I would have learned absolutely nothing.
i'm sitting in his class now. just read the textbook.. that's all he's talking about. he has, on a couple of occasions, not shown up for class. those worried about a huge final, don't worry, he had to implement a midterm for macro. hooray! micro (101) isn't difficult, but definitely read the textbook and keep up with the lyryx labs.
Useless prof to be honest..Micro101 could of been a disaster if it wasn't for the text(the final was 89% of our final mark). Macro was better though as we did have a midterm. He's helpful if you ask for help but overall he's quite rude.. tells you to "SHUT UP" even though you're just speaking quietly with your peer. His class is like another break
Useless classes, but easy exams
worst
I would have failed this class if not for basically teaching myself from the textbook; he was a terrible professor. About 2 weeks in, everyone realizes this and 2/3 of the class basically stop coming. The midterm was easy, the final was not (and he did not prepare us well for the final at all). He scaled the first term's exam by 15% and the second
I took Econ 101 and 102 with this guy, and lets just say I only went to his classes 3 times altogether this year. Ineffective at teaching intro econ but very easy to get high marks due to his insane scaling. I thought he was retiring this year too...well at least I can sell my books!
absolutely useless class. You will get nothing out of this class. waste of money.. Gateman is MUCH better.
Worst class ever in my life. Avoid Avoid Avoid!!
Worst class ever in my life. Avoid him
Boring, but all you have to do is read the book and do the exercises in the book as well as the labs, the final is EXACTLY the same. Read the book, I hardly even bothered going to class, you don't need to
Absolutely boring, do not go to class all of his notes are straight out of the book. Just memorize Lyrx and the textbook for the final and you will be fine. But you have to memorize everything, like small little details too!
Drop this if u can..not helpful, not even easy..just useless class
He's a funny old man. He likes talking about the Chinese and especially the US market these days. I feel happy seeing him carrying a huge backpack (just like all the students do!)Lyryx is easy. sometimes i do fall asleep...but pretty good so far!
awesome
worst class EVER. Ive been to three lectures and vowed that i will never go again unless its for the midterm. I go to Gatemans class instead and listen in on his lecture which is ALWAYS full as opposed to lemche's. lemche is boring and rude to students, tells you to constantly shut up altough you werent talking. bad bad bad bad prof.
I LOVE LEMCHE
hes ridiculous his midterm was too long for ahuman to do.
gatemen's test average is 40% and his is 60%..but gatement will scale 20% . lemche midterm was easy.the only hard part is the time given wasn't enough.. 40 mins to do 10 questions.. 7 of which is just straight copied out from lyryx lab, meaning 70% is free. final = based on concept and 30% on lyryx, meaning 30% marks r free. hope those infos rhelpf
Make sure to know the key concepts from the book for final. If you don't go to his classes, you need to read textbook!
It's hilarious how he recycles his jokes session after session, term after term. It gives a new meaning to the term sustainability! Yeah he told us to do the questions at the end of the chapters, and what do you know none where on the final. Regardless if you stick to the textbook you should be fine. "Hey! could you be quiet!"
I actually really like this guy. Sure, his lectures can be a bit tedious and alot of it covers material straight from the textbook, but in my view he is ALOT better than Gateman, who I found to be quite arrogant. His midterms are questions straight from Lyryx, so just practice them and read the textbook. He is very approachable and easy to talk to.
Definitely easier than Gateman, BUT that doesn't mean you don't have to study! You just have a better idea what exactly to study. I got 58% on my Gatemen midterm, and 76% on Lemche's. His lectures only seem to cover the basics so the textbook's definitely more useful than his lectures
I told him i finished the end of chapter questions and want to challenge myself by doing something extra. He told me to do the end of chapters again lol.
I hear his final was tough, but do-able for Econ 101. For Econ102, it just wasn't fair. He asked things you would never think to study. Thank goodness for curving! Lemche's final = WAAAY harder and more unfair than Gateman's. TAKE GATEMAN!!
I don't know what the person before me was smoking, but Gateman is MUCH harder than Lemche. To be honest, I didn't go to a single class and I managed to pull off an A-. Lemche scales a lot, so just make sure you read the textbook, understand the theories behind everything and you should be able to come out on top. Good luck!
the worst human being on earth
his classes are straight out of the textbook and are not worth your time, he doesnt teach anything at all and the few times i did attend class i enjoyed him yelling at others at their expense. basically if you think you can teach yourself by using a textbook take his class, frees up time to do whatever you please, i chose to sleep in, gateman=work
Didn't ever go to class, you teach everything to yourself by reading the textbook. You learn absolutely nothing from him, and I would rather have Gateman's impossible exams than Lemche's class. With Lemche, you are never motivated to work or study... if you know you have enough will-power to get to work then you'll be fine.
i didnt learn anything from this guy. i had lemche for 102 and gateman for 101. take gateman if you wanna actually learn something. take lemche if you wanna get better grades. also if you take lemche, dont waste time going to his class!!!
i heard of how notorious Lemche's teaching was, but i still decided to try some of his lectures. I switched out after a week for Gateman and i am still glad that i made that choice. unfortunately, I now have to manage to sell Bernanke's textbook at a discount. beware, the opportunity cost of going for Lemche is high!
It's really rather simple: Want to learn? Stay away. Want high marks and also possess the discipline to teach everything solely on your own? Lemche. Want a class you can blow off entirely without any consequence? Lemche's your man again. This is effectively a Distance Ed course. Good luck.
Register in Lemche's class, go to Gateman's class. That way you get the best of both worlds! Lemche = good grade; Gateman = knowledge
honestly. worst prof ever. mumbles a lot in lectures. kinda rude sometimes. just study on your own. his midterm consisted of Part A: Online quiz questions; Part B: "his" material that he kinda teaches in class (you can find this stuff on his website). if you dont want to go to class take lemche. if you want to learn, take gateman
What he teaches in lectures are essentially a regurgitation of what's in the textbook. Same examples, same everything. That said, he still makes an effort to go to class and teach even though only a few students ever show up. Exams are relatively easy, especially the midterm.
He's a nice and funny guy. His lectures are a little boring but they aren't useless. I personally liked him alot as a professor!
This guy is a fairly good prof. He is extremely handsome, I keep getting distracted because im always turned on. Other than that hes a bondu.
I loved him. He's really a nice guy and actually pretty funny if you get over the awkwardness. He knows his material extremely well, and you can tell he's experienced.
Rushes through notes at end of each lecture so impossible to copy down even w/ a laptop. you better self-teach and know the textbook INSIDE OUT; the reasoning and explanations behind every chapter if you want to do well for final. You can get away w/out the book for midterm and lyryx but NOT the final. Gone to 3 classes total all term, waste o time
No point of attending classes. I've only attended once or twice just to laugh at how he speaks and yet got 100% final average. Just read the textbook.
I love this man!!! clear lectures and great marks, what can you expect more from your prof?
The class is pretty boring but if you can stay awake you might learn something. If you can't stay awake, read the textbook and you'll be fine.
You don't have to go to a single class. He scans the textbook and puts it up on a projector and reads it. Read the text and be thankful you don't have Gateman.
i dont see why everyone hates him so much. he tells ppl to be quiet, but they annoy me too. i dont go to lectures anymore either, but i think it's great that im able to skip it and leave school earlier. honestly, i prefer it this way; you have to study by yourself anyway
Not very engaging, but overall an underrated prof. Does give some insight in class but lectures are mostly a summary of the text.
An underrated. He goes exactly over the textbook material, so it's really easy to stay on top of the class and understand the topics.
He's really not as bad as everyone says!! He goes over the textbook in class so it's great if you're more of an aural learner. He tells people to be quiet all the time, which becomes humourous, but he does it with valid reason since there are a lot of irritatingly chatty people out there. Midterms and finals are pretty straightforward.
Just skip all the lectures and read the book yourself, you'll just do fine. Extremely easy finals, and he bumps the class mark up if it's too low... Overall, if you don't mind his boring lectures and if you're aiming for a good mark, then definitely pick him rather than Gateman.
This is God's answer to Gateman. If you had a terrible experience with Gatemen, take Econ with Lemche. Seriously, as long as you read the textbook before the exam you'll get at LEAST a B. If you don't want to attend his lectures, don't go. :P
He does not know how to teach, so don't go to his lectures, it's a waste of time, because you will end up going on facebook anyways. Read the textbook and make sure you understand all the concepts, you will do great in the final and you will be surprised in how easy it is!
he cant teach but his midterms are okay...go for him if u want to get good marks!!!
His class is useless and it is hard to focus during his class. All he does during the class is like reading the texkbook for you.
Quite literally, if you skip all the classes and follow the textbook precisely (and do all the Lyryx labs) you could totally treat this class like a correspondence class. I did, and got an A+. He is SO BORING. Helps to go to class to reinforce the information, but since he just practically reads out of the textbook, that is all class is good for.
Absolutely terrible professor. Cannot teach whatsoever. Do not take this prof; he will make you HATE economics with a passion.
Notes are nice summary of text but he's always short on time due to his long irrevelant examples. Very unapproachable, quite rude at times and allows little room for other views on his opinions. Would do much better learning on your own and going to tutorial as lectures are generally uninformative. Mid-term hard to finish even if you know all stuff
These ratings are true. His lectures are extremely, extremely dry reiterations of the textbook. Just read the textbook and do the lyryx labs (even though you will spend hours on the labs to barely be worth your marks). Midterm isn't hard but you're not given anywhere close to enough time. His exams may be more predictable, but NOT necessarily easy!
What a horrible teacher! Most students go to his class to Facebook. He just goes over the textbook. Midterm is LONG and straight off Lyryx. You will NOT FINISH. As a result of doing poorly on the midterm, you will have to ace the final which is REALLY hard, and full of questions you've never seen. NOT AS EASY AS HE SOUNDS.
Even though I heard lemche's class was super easy, I think you still have to put a lot of efforts in order to achieve a good grade. The class average for 2010W was 68% after scaling. MT and final are no longer predictable. Work hard for his mt and final.
lectures- dry as hell (like everyone said)lectures are just SAME as the textbook MT is reli long not enuf time so U must ace Final.. Lots of pressure don't think he reli is.i wanted someone actually teaches as a prof
Great prof. Needs to specify how to study for final more clearer. MT time should be reduced or questions should be lessened cause it takes a ridiculously long time to finish.
Although he wasn't a good lecturer, as a professor, he was one of the best I have seen. If you take an interest in the subject, he takes an interest in you and helps you succeed. I was bored for his classes all the time, however I got a lot out of his class. Midterm was long, but it wasn't impossible, finished it on the dot, which is alright
Horrible lecturer. Ambiguos MT and Final. Poor question choice/layout. English mistakes in questions make it harder to understand. Finally... Grades are unpredictable. I failed the MT and aced the final with the same amount of preparation
Do the labs. Study the labs. Get good grades.
Not as easy as he used to be. choose gateman or chapple instead. lemche is a waste of time and a waste of 450 bucks.
Not necessary to attend lectures: all he does is go over what's already in his textbook. He uses the exact same examples too, which makes his classes very sleep-worthy. Exams aren't that easy, but the Lyryx Labs bring your mark up. Tutorials unnecessary.
Took econ 101/102 with him. If you can self study take his class. His mts are hard but if you study his finals are easy and the mt marks are disregarded. He scaled up 101 by 8% and 102 by 4% (which is amazing). If you can't self-study.. don't take econ? Lemche is the easiest teacher. My (much smarter) friend took Gateman and I beat her both times!
I don't know why he gets such a bad rep. Probably because the class average seems to be usually around 63-64%. I'm a 4th year student and I've seen a lot worse. He's in the "average" category. He's very helpful in office hours and after class if you have questions. At least he doesn't slightly change the textbook twice a year (no resell) like Dr. G
