Useless lectures, but funny how he tries to get in peoples' face when they're talking. Tests are easy. He's an easy going guy. Just say you can't make it to the test, and you'll have an extra week or two to study for it.

I can teach much better than him. Anybody can simply take the highlighted parts from the textbook, and read out examples from the textbook. Doesn't take a PhD to do so

INSOMNIACS: Lemche is a miracle drug. Dont even bother taking notes in his class, that is, if you choose to attend, which isnt at all necessary. Read the texts and go to the McGraw-Hill website and you are set.

Like wut the other guy said below: even tho Lemche is *supposed* to be easier than Gateman's KILLER exams.... NOT EVERYTIME! I actually end up getting a LOWER mark (10% lower) in Lemche than Gateman! lemche is not as bad as some pple said he is. his notes are helpful when reading the text and doing the questions later, so i found showing up in class DOES have its merits. he answers questions and does a good job. however, what he says during the lectures is essentially useless.

His notes are straight out of the text and he doesn't really explain them any better than the book does (sometimes he makes it more confusing). But there are no assignments other than the exams so if you are an 'independent learner' then it's fine.

If you steal his slides, you can get away without buying the book. I like his teaching style though. His lectures are not that fun-filled but he knows his stuff well and when questioned gives answers that are consistent with what was taught.

Very lazy prof. I wouldn't know if his notes were copied from the textbook because of the fact that i couldn't stand to sit in his class. Final was ridiculous. You are basically paying money to read the economics textbook. Make sure you hand in your tests to the TA Ning Huang if shes still there

His monotone lectures are basically slides from the textbook publisher's website. Our midterm was from chapter1-5; final was ch1-12,14.He basically "taught" us 8 chapters in about a month. The final was unexpectedly hard. The only good thing was his habit of scaling the class avg to 68%.

It's very extreme. like someone said above, you either do REALLY, SUPERBLY well in it. or you just fail out totally. there's little room for in between. and the scaling makes no sense, although most students do benenfit from it. just....the key to the exams are HIS EXAMPLES! (in class or book)

The scaling was unbelievable. Somebody got a +20% boost while others got 4% (e.g 85 becomes 100). Oh ya, and don't be fooled by those ppl who are getting 95% and above in his class. They are the ones who failed once already, and thanks to them, the class average was painstakingly pulled up to a 68.

Lemche merely reads the textbook to you. He shows absolutely nothing else except text summaries. He is very disorganized and lazy. It makes no difference if you to to lecture or not. Get Gateman if you can, at least he is creative in his lectures and seems knowledgable about economics.

Most of the time you won't know what he is talking about. The opportunity cost of going to his class is high. He just mumbles and yell at students. Class avg on finals are usually 40%..this guy would be fired if he didn't scale the marks at the end..everyone gets 20%+

EVER EVER take his class because 1)everything comes out of the text, class is a waste of time, 2) unorganized with grading, he lost my midterm and did not try very hard to look for it 3) the exam questions sometimes can be quite bizzare and perhaps not relevant to what you've learned.

Well... if you read textbook, and try to memorize every detail, you'll do fine (after scaling). Never went to a class.. memorized the whole book, and got 92% (after 15% scaling). However, be in mind that the class average WAS 52%... i would NOT take the chance... i would goto Gateman instead as he is MUCH MUCH better (although i did worse in 101)

I never fail a course in my whole life, until NOW! Among the 12 courses I attempted, I got 6 A+, 3 Bs, 2 C+. Although it's not VERY good, I don't think my transcript looked too ugly. But NOW it IS UGLY. I FAIL!! Perhaps I didn't work hard enough, but it's really hard to copy the notes (lots) and listen to what he says at the same time.

The professor is definitely quite useless. However, if you want to add another 100% on your transcript, his class is perfect for you. Because of his outrageous scaling methods, you can easily get 100% if you're brilliant, and you can do it without even going to class.

lemche's final exams are a joke! it's as if he read the chapter headings of the textbook the night before, and wrote 10 short-answer questions based on the textbook headings. forget copying down the notes, just memorize the textbook. it worked for me and i did pretty darn well both terms =)

Lemche teaches from the textbook, which is good, cuz... you just read the textbook and do the questions and you'll be fine for the mt and the final. And also major scaling, so i mean Gateman's more interesting, but Lemche will get you a higher mark. I prefer Lemche and you learn econ either way by reading the text.. so Lemche > Gateman

Lemche is a boring prof with notes that are directly from the textbook, but he's easier than Gateman. His tests are tedious, but if you study, you'll ace them, and the scaling is ridiculous, if u can manage a raw score that's an A/A-, then ur basically guaranteed 100%.

And his lectures are terrible, he just kind of rants for an hour with his projector notes, straight from the textbook as a sort of visual backdrop. PROS: exams are easier than Gateman's (not easy, easier). CONS: where do I start - Lemche is the most boring prof EVER! Overall, I spent about 5 days (TOTAL) studying for the course, skipped all classes but one, and didn't touch the study guide - ended up with A minus. I took Gateman's class for Econ 101, got A plus. See the difference?

I bring my laptop to class and watches movies and series I download. The class is so boring and he basically reads the textbook to you. If I haven't put this class in the middle of my other 2 class I would have skipped. Tests are easy though :D do the study guide, some questions are taken straight out! 02-03 :D

Attendence is a waste of time. Everything he teaches in lectures can be learnt in greater detail and understanding through the textbook. Most if not all questions on the midterm and final are from the textbook.

Overall a not bad prof. His lectures are helpful and he knows the material well. However, you should read ahead and prepare for the class in order to benefit the most from his lectures. He goes through the notes extremely fast so I suggest you either bring a laptop or camera! The exams are hard but the scaling helped a BUNCH.

It's a good elective for 1st years since it's a pretty easy course (he scales quite a bit at the end). Text highly recommended (you can virtually skip all the classes and just show up for the midterm and final).

He is able to relate his experiences in the industry with what he is teaching, which I found quite engaging. He would also bring in a bit of history as to why certain economic activities became the norm, ie wompum trading which the textbook does not cover. If you don't fall asleep in class, there's a lot to be had from his lectures.

Easily the worst professor I've ever had. There was no assessment of our work at all, we had a final worth 89% of the grade, and 11 labs that were done online and marked by the website. There was little to no preparation for the final. If it were not for the textbook I would have learned absolutely nothing.

i'm sitting in his class now. just read the textbook.. that's all he's talking about. he has, on a couple of occasions, not shown up for class. those worried about a huge final, don't worry, he had to implement a midterm for macro. hooray! micro (101) isn't difficult, but definitely read the textbook and keep up with the lyryx labs.

gatemen's test average is 40% and his is 60%..but gatement will scale 20% . lemche midterm was easy.the only hard part is the time given wasn't enough.. 40 mins to do 10 questions.. 7 of which is just straight copied out from lyryx lab, meaning 70% is free. final = based on concept and 30% on lyryx, meaning 30% marks r free. hope those infos rhelpf

It's hilarious how he recycles his jokes session after session, term after term. It gives a new meaning to the term sustainability! Yeah he told us to do the questions at the end of the chapters, and what do you know none where on the final. Regardless if you stick to the textbook you should be fine. "Hey! could you be quiet!"

I actually really like this guy. Sure, his lectures can be a bit tedious and alot of it covers material straight from the textbook, but in my view he is ALOT better than Gateman, who I found to be quite arrogant. His midterms are questions straight from Lyryx, so just practice them and read the textbook. He is very approachable and easy to talk to.

Definitely easier than Gateman, BUT that doesn't mean you don't have to study! You just have a better idea what exactly to study. I got 58% on my Gatemen midterm, and 76% on Lemche's. His lectures only seem to cover the basics so the textbook's definitely more useful than his lectures

I hear his final was tough, but do-able for Econ 101. For Econ102, it just wasn't fair. He asked things you would never think to study. Thank goodness for curving! Lemche's final = WAAAY harder and more unfair than Gateman's. TAKE GATEMAN!!

I don't know what the person before me was smoking, but Gateman is MUCH harder than Lemche. To be honest, I didn't go to a single class and I managed to pull off an A-. Lemche scales a lot, so just make sure you read the textbook, understand the theories behind everything and you should be able to come out on top. Good luck!

his classes are straight out of the textbook and are not worth your time, he doesnt teach anything at all and the few times i did attend class i enjoyed him yelling at others at their expense. basically if you think you can teach yourself by using a textbook take his class, frees up time to do whatever you please, i chose to sleep in, gateman=work

Didn't ever go to class, you teach everything to yourself by reading the textbook. You learn absolutely nothing from him, and I would rather have Gateman's impossible exams than Lemche's class. With Lemche, you are never motivated to work or study... if you know you have enough will-power to get to work then you'll be fine.

i didnt learn anything from this guy. i had lemche for 102 and gateman for 101. take gateman if you wanna actually learn something. take lemche if you wanna get better grades. also if you take lemche, dont waste time going to his class!!!

i heard of how notorious Lemche's teaching was, but i still decided to try some of his lectures. I switched out after a week for Gateman and i am still glad that i made that choice. unfortunately, I now have to manage to sell Bernanke's textbook at a discount. beware, the opportunity cost of going for Lemche is high!

It's really rather simple: Want to learn? Stay away. Want high marks and also possess the discipline to teach everything solely on your own? Lemche. Want a class you can blow off entirely without any consequence? Lemche's your man again. This is effectively a Distance Ed course. Good luck.

Register in Lemche's class, go to Gateman's class. That way you get the best of both worlds! Lemche = good grade; Gateman = knowledge

honestly. worst prof ever. mumbles a lot in lectures. kinda rude sometimes. just study on your own. his midterm consisted of Part A: Online quiz questions; Part B: "his" material that he kinda teaches in class (you can find this stuff on his website). if you dont want to go to class take lemche. if you want to learn, take gateman

What he teaches in lectures are essentially a regurgitation of what's in the textbook. Same examples, same everything. That said, he still makes an effort to go to class and teach even though only a few students ever show up. Exams are relatively easy, especially the midterm.

I loved him. He's really a nice guy and actually pretty funny if you get over the awkwardness. He knows his material extremely well, and you can tell he's experienced.

Rushes through notes at end of each lecture so impossible to copy down even w/ a laptop. you better self-teach and know the textbook INSIDE OUT; the reasoning and explanations behind every chapter if you want to do well for final. You can get away w/out the book for midterm and lyryx but NOT the final. Gone to 3 classes total all term, waste o time

i dont see why everyone hates him so much. he tells ppl to be quiet, but they annoy me too. i dont go to lectures anymore either, but i think it's great that im able to skip it and leave school earlier. honestly, i prefer it this way; you have to study by yourself anyway

He's really not as bad as everyone says!! He goes over the textbook in class so it's great if you're more of an aural learner. He tells people to be quiet all the time, which becomes humourous, but he does it with valid reason since there are a lot of irritatingly chatty people out there. Midterms and finals are pretty straightforward.

Just skip all the lectures and read the book yourself, you'll just do fine. Extremely easy finals, and he bumps the class mark up if it's too low... Overall, if you don't mind his boring lectures and if you're aiming for a good mark, then definitely pick him rather than Gateman.

This is God's answer to Gateman. If you had a terrible experience with Gatemen, take Econ with Lemche. Seriously, as long as you read the textbook before the exam you'll get at LEAST a B. If you don't want to attend his lectures, don't go. :P

He does not know how to teach, so don't go to his lectures, it's a waste of time, because you will end up going on facebook anyways. Read the textbook and make sure you understand all the concepts, you will do great in the final and you will be surprised in how easy it is!

Quite literally, if you skip all the classes and follow the textbook precisely (and do all the Lyryx labs) you could totally treat this class like a correspondence class. I did, and got an A+. He is SO BORING. Helps to go to class to reinforce the information, but since he just practically reads out of the textbook, that is all class is good for.

Notes are nice summary of text but he's always short on time due to his long irrevelant examples. Very unapproachable, quite rude at times and allows little room for other views on his opinions. Would do much better learning on your own and going to tutorial as lectures are generally uninformative. Mid-term hard to finish even if you know all stuff

These ratings are true. His lectures are extremely, extremely dry reiterations of the textbook. Just read the textbook and do the lyryx labs (even though you will spend hours on the labs to barely be worth your marks). Midterm isn't hard but you're not given anywhere close to enough time. His exams may be more predictable, but NOT necessarily easy!

What a horrible teacher! Most students go to his class to Facebook. He just goes over the textbook. Midterm is LONG and straight off Lyryx. You will NOT FINISH. As a result of doing poorly on the midterm, you will have to ace the final which is REALLY hard, and full of questions you've never seen. NOT AS EASY AS HE SOUNDS.

Even though I heard lemche's class was super easy, I think you still have to put a lot of efforts in order to achieve a good grade. The class average for 2010W was 68% after scaling. MT and final are no longer predictable. Work hard for his mt and final.

Great prof. Needs to specify how to study for final more clearer. MT time should be reduced or questions should be lessened cause it takes a ridiculously long time to finish.

Although he wasn't a good lecturer, as a professor, he was one of the best I have seen. If you take an interest in the subject, he takes an interest in you and helps you succeed. I was bored for his classes all the time, however I got a lot out of his class. Midterm was long, but it wasn't impossible, finished it on the dot, which is alright

Horrible lecturer. Ambiguos MT and Final. Poor question choice/layout. English mistakes in questions make it harder to understand. Finally... Grades are unpredictable. I failed the MT and aced the final with the same amount of preparation

Not necessary to attend lectures: all he does is go over what's already in his textbook. He uses the exact same examples too, which makes his classes very sleep-worthy. Exams aren't that easy, but the Lyryx Labs bring your mark up. Tutorials unnecessary.

Took econ 101/102 with him. If you can self study take his class. His mts are hard but if you study his finals are easy and the mt marks are disregarded. He scaled up 101 by 8% and 102 by 4% (which is amazing). If you can't self-study.. don't take econ? Lemche is the easiest teacher. My (much smarter) friend took Gateman and I beat her both times!

I don't know why he gets such a bad rep. Probably because the class average seems to be usually around 63-64%. I'm a 4th year student and I've seen a lot worse. He's in the "average" category. He's very helpful in office hours and after class if you have questions. At least he doesn't slightly change the textbook twice a year (no resell) like Dr. G
