Professor Gueye is very knowledgeable about the global economy which he shares with us through his teaching. He often leads discussion topics to help us understand how the economic principles are applied to the world economy. A weekly 3-hour class flashes by so fast because I have found his teaching to be very interesting and inspirational.
Professor Gueye helped to greatly expand my understanding of economics. He is incredibly knowledgeable and has high expectations for students. His classes are interesting. Anyone who attends class and does the work should do well.
Dr Gueye is a tough instructor but you will come out of his class with a great understanding of economics. I thought I wasn't grasping some of the concepts very well but in the end I realized I had picked up a lot. He is a very good instructor and I was very happy to have him!
Professor Souleymane has a commanding knowledge of macroeconomics. His teaching is clear, precise, and straightforward. Lectures are well organized, and test material follows logically. I enjoyed lectures very much, and gained significant knowledge. If you want to understand global events, I highly recommend Professor Souleymane’s lectures.
Loved his lectures! Overall a great professor and should consider taking if you wanted to expand your knowledge in economics!
I took Professor Gueye's Econ 220 and 221 sections simultaneously, which was doable and very enriching as some topics overlapped. Overall, I thought the class was extremely informative, even though challenging. I never thought that I would be intrigued by economics, but Professor Gueye definitely sparked a lot of curiosity. Great lectures.
I also took micro and macro simultaneously with professor Gueye. I would recommend this, because the MUCH of the material overlaps. I was able to do well in both classes without buying the textbook--however it would have definitely helped me understand some of the more confusing concepts.
This class was definetly challenging. However you could use open notes on the exams and there was lots of extra credit offered including a research paper. I struggled in this class but pulled off a "B" because I did the research paper. Professor Gueye has a thick accent, hard to understand but overall a really nice guy and he wants you to do well.
He has the ability to memorize his entire 2 1/2 hr lecture every class. He is clearly a master on the subject. I would suggest taking detailed notes and filling out the practice test as completely as possible. If you do this you should do fine in the class. He was also accommodating when issues arose, just don't take advantage. Yes, Yes? 8)
I took both Econ 220 and 221 with him due to his positive reviews on this site, which I now believe most of them are fake. Literally no one in our classes thought he was a good teacher. Be prepared to teach yourself the material, as he's hard to understand and gets fed up if you don't understand it. Not punctual, never responds to emails.
Terrible blackboard writing? hard to understand, awful math skills, didn't follow his syllabus, the test is hard, I just don't understand how and why so many people give him such a high score
Professor Gueye's class is great, on the condition that you actually come to classes and take notes. If you just have those two down, you are set to go in your Econ 220 and 221.
A wonderful teacher who cares a lot about his students and the subject. He answers all your questions and wants you to understand the material. Also impossible to fail if you can do basic math and take notes. Presents a balanced approach to economics supplemented with interesting articles, not the usual biased free-market tripe. Highly recommended.
The best teacher ever. He is very helpful and the sweetest teacher. i almost failed the class but guess what he did, he cheer me up and helping me to do better in class. I did the extra credit and he helping me out to do that by checking my progress. highly recommended!!!!
Prof. Gueye is great! He can be difficult to understand at times but he is extremely knowledgeable and is willing to work with you if you need help or are in a bind. Tests are open notes and you can do well on them without ever reading the book as long as you attend and take good notes. HW is online, read book before class, book not required.
Took his class once a week monday nights. He seemed really easy in the beginning. It's really easy to get 100% on the online hw and quizes but his tests don't seem to relate to his discussions(what I could make out of them). Even with the tests being open note. The last test we took, the only scores I saw were between 30% and 50%. Very unclear.
Gueye really understands economics. Sometimes, it is a bit difficult to understand him, but if you just ask, then he is extremely reasonable and will explain until you understand. If you visit him in office hour he will help you immensely. He is very reasonable and dedicated to his students. As with anything, you will get out what you put in.
if you go to the class, take good notes, do the worksheets, do online hw and quiz, then A is yours. Textbook is helpful but not necesssary. I was able to get an A without the textbook. His notes and worksheets are more important. overall, he is really knowledgeable about what he is teaching and i've enjoyed his class.
He might not be the easiest instructor at DVC but he is very knowledgeable, logical, and clear when it comes to the lecture. If you follow his logical process you will learn so much from him. Thanks to him, my understanding of Economics have improved significantly after taking his class. Tip: if you want to do good in this class take good notes.
prof. gueye is a great teacher. attend his class and take notes! i will definitely take his econ 221 class.
Professor Gueye is a great instructor who knows the material. To do well in his class it is imperative to take notes, listen to the lecture, and know how to do the worksheets that he gives out weekly. He is very understanding and helpful. Put in the effort and you'll do great!
Taking notes during his lecture is mandatory! Exams are open notes. Quizzes and homework are easy a. As long as you really understands the material and good in calculation, A is in your hand :)
Was very knowledgeable about the subject. However he is not a good teacher. He lacks patience with his students and is very confusing a majority of the time. I do not recommend him at all
Never take his class. His lecture is unclear and he is not kind at all. His exam is very difficult and he doesn't admit his fault.
Don't take this class if you don't have time to teach yourself the material. He is very unorganized and it is very unclear what is expected from you on the tests.
ESCAPE RIGHTNOW, DONT TAKE HIM EVER EVER!!
His class is really bad, his teaching cannot be understand, he never admit his mistake. Don't take this class
This class is by far the hardest course on campus. ONLY take his class if you are VERY INTERESTED in economics, otherwise DO NOT. It is imperative that you take thorough notes and write what he says in addition to what he writes on the board. If you do take his class, be prepared to suffer but, your knowledge of economics will expand tremendously.
Just awful. Hard to understand. Tests are open note, but doesn't help since much of the test is not covered through lecture. Lets you do a make up test online, but little to none of it was covered in class. Very angry with the performance of the professor and hiring skills of DVC's staff.
I'm taking his class on summer. His accent is rather hard to understand, but as long as you take a note you'll be fine. His exam is open notes and worksheets, so do all the worksheet given and take a note on his class. The final is optional when I took him, his exam is not hard if you study well. Read the book before you do the hw and quiz.
His lectures generally just skim the top of the course material (text book)... But his exams are open-note and are fairly straight forward. Passing isn't a problem, but if you want to do well, you'd best read the text book before coming into each meeting. Definitely is testing on comprehension, not so much simple application of examples from class.
quite hard, he speak with thick accent! but if you follow his lecture and shows up in class its not impossible to get an A, exams are easy (open notes! be sure to write EVERYTHING and complete all assignments since you can see it in the test) but finals are HARD, be sure to study for the final exam.
He is a brilliant man and an expert in his field, but doesn't get that this is an introductory course. Reading the book doesn't help much for tests, they are structured from his lectures which he speeds through and doesn't stop to see if the class understands.
I'm honestly surprised that I got a B. He is a smart teacher no but he is very hard to understand and like. He is intimidating to approach when asking questions but i encourage you to see him in his office and get outside help. His tests are based off his worksheets and more. Extremely hard to pass his tests but gives A LOT EC to make up for it.
I took macro over the summer, and his class was enjoyable. Lets you use notes and handouts that he gave you, and those handouts are key to acing the exam. Also the fact that you can get up to 10 points extra credit on each test is sweet, it's what saved my grade. Just make sure you pay attention and write everything down. The final was optional.
He has good understanding of economics but in my opinion I did not like the way he presents his lectures very unorganized and all over the place. Whenever I went to his office hours he either came really late or didn't show up at all. Not much help there. open notes and all on tests. Students did so bad he had to give tons of extra credit
Worst professor I have ever had. I'm not sure how he is in a classroom setting, but definitely a no for online class. Opens materials online 3-5 days late and he doesn't give you extra time to do the work even though it was his fault. Exams are very long and he does not reply to online discussions. Almost seemed like there was no professor at all.
I was very nervous throughout the whole semester. His tests are extremely tough and they basically make up your grade. He really cares if you put in extra effort to talk to him, and will help you a ton. I ended up transferring to UCSB and am now taking the class that determines whether I get into my major (econ) or not. Souleyman really helped.
His lecture is very fast and he does not care if the students understand. He does not teach you concept but all computation. His exam is very difficult and tricky. His attitude towards students is very bad. If you ask him questions, he will sigh and shake his head. His attitude towards students is very bad and come to class late every time.
The way of his teaching is not effective and his accent makes the material even harder. Because the exams are based on his lectures not the textbook. It means if you don't follow his lecture s, you fail the course. BUT the lectures are Awful and the exams are difficult! Avoid him if possible and if you want to save ur GPA!
Prof. Gueye is a really nice guy and incredibly knowledgeable, show up at office hours and ask for help. He doesn't assign much homework which is nice. Tests are challenging but he offers extra cred to make up for it. Take VERY thorough notes to do well on the tests. Attend class, work hard and your grade will reflect the effort you put in.
He really ties everything with real life circumstances which makes it very interesting!
He's a good teacher, good at explaining and applying to current events occurring right now. His tests are based on his lectures, so go to class, as well as the packets he gives in class. Homework and quizzes are easy. He gives lots of extra credit to bump grades. He's a good teacher. Show up to class, pay attention, and do your work, you'll be fine
He's a really good teacher, ties up everything in current events to help you understand, good explainer. Lecture based class, tests based off lectures, discussions in class, and packets given during class. So show up to class. Textbook not mandatory. Do your homework, show up to class, pay attention, you'll learn and pass the class easy.
He's a really nice guy and he does truly care about his students. If you try your best in the class it is impossible to fail. The tests are very similar to the in class activities. If you don't understand something don't be embarrassed to ask for or go into office hours, he's a nice guy.
I took a 6 week summer class and while it was challenging with the short amount of time to learn a large load of course info, Professor Souleymane always made time for students and made sure we understood the material. Very nice and would definitely recommend him if you are taking Micro or Macro Economics
Great professor! Loved his lectures and extensive knowledge on the topics discussed in class. Kept the lectures fun and interesting.
The class test based on the notes given during lecture. The professor give a thorough explanation in class. There are hand outs and in-class exercises which help student practice.
Great Professor! Don't miss class and take good notes from his lectures. Complete all handouts given, most of his exams are based off his handouts. He also give out handouts for extra credit.
Professor Gueye is very knowledgable and passionate. He works with students and gives them the best support needed. Make sure you don't miss class. Notes are extremely important. I definitely recommend this class!
Some tips that may help you get a good grade in this class: Don't miss class, take good notes from his lectures, work on his handouts, get help from the tutors in econ lab if you have any questions, form a study group with one or two people.
He is an amazing teacher. It is easy to pass if you try and pay attention. His handouts are the key to every exam. If you understand the hand outs and practice them you will pass as the exams are open note. Also gives lots of extra credit for those whom fall behind or want extra points.
Professor Gueye is an amazing guy! He cares about his students; if you are struggling just go to office hours and he will help (a lot!). The way he writes on the chalkboard is confusing, and his accent is a little strong.. BUT just stop him any time and he will repeat it for you. He doesnt use a textbook so go to class. Again, go to office hours.
Very thick accent, I had to watch him while he spoke and take good notes. He gladly repeated something if you didn't understand. He likes class involvement. I wish that he had more office hours/was more accessible. I saw a tutor 3 times each week just to keep up. Very liberal, so study your current events & challenge him.
Loved him as a teacher. He has an accent which made it hard but honestly I just think the subject matter is really hard, and he made it somewhat easy, but it is still hard. Go to class, listen and ask questions and you'll be fine
Professor Gueye has a very thick accent. However, after a while you will get used to it. He is a very well educated and amazing professor. He gives you example questions that are similar to the question on the tests and final.
Awesome
He's frustrating because his tests have questions that are barely covered in class, especially theory wise. Benefit is he gives a ton of extra credit, but if you're an econ major hoping to learn something, you won't learn anything by the end of it. He also is half the time never there at office hours. Go to class, do handouts, & do extra credit.
he never prints enough copies for students and very unorganized. Unprepared for the class and his explanations are so confusing that literally more than half of the students do not understand. He makes his tutor do the gradings. When students ask a question, he will often be pissed off. All of the comments below are written by his surroundings.
Considering the quality of his lecture, organization and the level of carelessness , DVC should feel ashamed hiring him. He makes fun of students who don't understand because of his confusing lecture; actually he is the one laughed by his students.
He's a good professor who knows what he's talking about, his accent is thick so it takes a bit of getting used to. He is disorganized but he's also teaching multiple classes at the same time, willing to help, accessible through email, and gives extra credit. You have to show up to class though, tests are based on lecture. Overall I liked him.
He is very clear when doing his lectures and very patient. I learned a lot from him. One of the best professors I had in DVC
He works with your learning style and offers in-class and online exams. He is professional and lectures well. It is crucial that you attend class for the lectures and examples provided during class in order to understand the material. He offers extra credit and sometimes will adjust your exam scores if you show your work and understand the formulas
Terrible teaching method and tests. He is always disorganized and messy. Uploads everything just at once and expect you to get them done in two days.
He knows this subject, however, very disorganized. He takes in class tests then posts online exam which is overwhelming. he does not post assignment on time but then post everything at once that ruins your life. criticizing you if you ask a question.
You wont know your grade until semester over, his syllabus said no final cumulative, but was cumulative and extremely tough. If you ask him questions, he criticizes you and gets frustrated why you dont know that. Classes cancel then winds up the next class. Doesnt post homework on time then suddenly too much the next week. Make your decision now
Professor Gueye knows his stuff very well, it's kind of bad how you won't know your grade until the last minute. He understands if you struggled in class, he gives you opportunities, make sure you do all the hw and do not be absent. Do the extra credit, you will get an A. Always ASK after class, to retake tests, or anything, ASK first.
This class is not easy at all, he gave four tests (final tests the last chapter, nothing too hard). HW assignments are all on the Pearson mylab and mastering, do the hw, make sure you do all the assignments and worksheet he passes out to you, do all of them and study them, the tests are gonna be the same except that he changes some of the numbers.
Ok, he's not that bad, just try to get C's on the tests, he's gonna try everything to help you. DO all the hw assignments, talk to him if you have any problems. You will at least get an A or B if you do all the hw and do ok on the tests. He's actually a little more easy going than he seems. Gives Extra credit too.
His accent and writing can be hard to understand so I SIT TOWARDS THE FRONT. Tests are exactly like the in-class worksheets (3 + FINAL). Sometimes he can be a bit rude when someone doesn't understand the material so just make sure to keep up. Open note tests, and can redo online portion of the test infinite times.
He is a very reasonable and understanding professor, when I went into the ER and messaged him he was very understanding and extended my late homework with no questions asked, he is very good at his lectures too and you can tell he loves his job!
If you have an option to take the online class, do it. Professor gueye is a great teacher and although the homework may be a bit much when it comes to the problems. Youll have no issue as long as you just try.
Professor Gueye is an excellent Economics professor. He is so lenient when it comes down to HW and assignment deadlines and he gives untimed exams, where you also get unlimited attempts. This means that you can retake exams numerous times until you are satisfied with your score on the exam. You have 4 exams in total. No final exam, no quizzes.
Affordable amount of assignments, but the only disadvantage is his e-mail response is too slow.
Boring class, extra credit discussions though that boosted your grade. Uses Pearson MyLab, three tests total that you have unlimited attempts on which is a bonus. Homework is easy and the majority of questions on the tests are from the homework. Very independent course, I never met with him and he has few office hours but I still did well.
He seems caring about economics as he would always reach out to make sure to ask for help if anyone needs it. Unlimited attempts on homework and tests on Pearson. They would take a long time to complete though. Make sure to complete work on time, you cant access late work or tests.
Online class was pretty easy. Very unorganized when it comes to Canvas. Assigns hw at random times like he would assign a hw assignment on a Wednesday instead of releasing everything on Monday. All work is done through Pearson. Most of the hw is easy to find on outside sources wink wink.
This class is pretty simple yet somewhat unorganized. A lot of the assignments had random due dates; and there were times when we had 5 chapters that were due in a week, then like 5 weeks of no homework. Really easy material and the homework/ exams were all online and he's flexible if needed. Definitely recommend taking his online class.
This class was definitely difficult in some areas. Homework ranges from 30 to 50 questions, but the quizzes are the same questions so they were not hard. Make sure you allow yourself time to do them, they're also like 40 questions. I didn't have enough time once and asked for an extension and he was very late to reply, and gave me 2 hours.
you can retake as much as you want but make sure you make the time. As long as you dont procrastinate Homework and test it will be good. Give yourself extra time to take the test multiple times. SO DONT WAIT last minute.
I took this class during the summer and it went pretty well. The homework is a lot of questions but you can redo it as much as you want. The tests are worth like 70% of your grade but you can also redo them. I ended the class with an 86% but he bumped me up to an A. Its a very do it your own class, he's not very involved. Good for an online class.
I took this class for the credit, didn't learn anything. I took his shorter class Sep 23-Dec 13. He gave 17 assignments, do all of them! Two per week. They take less than an hour if you use Chatgpt. Gave 3 exams. Will randomly post an assignment that's due that night or the next day so watch out
There are a lot of homework, and there are unlimited opportunities to redo it(include exam), but it is very time-consuming, so please be prepared if you choose it.
This is pretty much just a pearson course. The professor does very little to teach, you will hardly know he's there. Doesn't respond to messages, no lectures. Everything is through pearson which means endless reading and boring format and questions. Difficult to learn anything when 'taught' in this manner.
Do not take this class. Doesn't answer any emails. The pearson class costs $150+ to access, just to take the class. The tests are most of your grade. They are not difficult material wise, just time consuming and you don't get taught anything so it's hardto get a good grade. He sets you up for failure in the future.
He is completely absent from the course, puts forth most minimal effort. Doesn't respond to messages. Other than his intro message, you will not know he is there. There are no lectures, not one assignment was created by him. Everything is done through Pearson, which means long, grueling, repetitive work that teaches you nothing. You are on your own
Terrible communicator. Wasn't a very organized class and I ended up needing to drop, but when I reached out to ask if theres anything I can do or if my grade is worth staying in the class, he just straight up drop me without even responding to my message. Also had to ask for some help with the textbook and he just resent the syllabus? Very strange
If you don't mind learning on your own, this is a good course. The entire class is done through Pearson. Homework and exams can be redone, so you can learn from your mistakes. But, the homework and exams are typically 50+ questions, and can take hours to complete. If you start assignments early and read the textbook, you'll do well.
you would do better not taking this class rather than taking it with this prof
