I've always hated physics, but it wasn't too bad with this professor. Assigns a take-home problem every day, and uses Wiley Plus for HW. Very helpful, welcomes questions in class, promptly responds to email, and is helpful after class. Tests were mostly based on HW and problems done in class. I wish he showed more demo's in class though.
Great guy! Helpful in and outside of class. Totally approachable. Knows the subject very well.
Great experience taking 116A over the summer. highly recommended!
Great professor, very helpful, answers emails promptly, has office hours daily and review sessions before the tests. He drops a test and keeps only your highest two which helps a lot in the end. I took this class over the summer, it was an excellent choice for physics. I'd highly recommend Dutta!!!
Sourish is the best lecturer I have had at Vandy. He made every topic covered in 121 (basically faster paced 116) crystal clear. He was always excited to help students. He gives homework that is due on the day of the test. Tests are tough but fair. If you understand the material, you can get a 100. If you dont, you can easily get a 50.
Wonderful class. Dr. Dutta absolutely loves physics and was ecstatic to discuss it beyond the scope of the course. Clear lectures, lightning fast email response. Tests were 5 free response each. Partial credit is stingy but extra credit 8-20 pts every test. Generally an awesome guy! Homework's extensive, online and Powerpoint Problems.
Physics is like hell for me and professor Dutta makes it worse. POP QUIZE+RANDOMLY CALL PEOPLE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS+TONS OF HW. But he is pretty helpful, illustrates questions clearly but the questions are soooo hard. I spent almost 2h everyday on it.
gives no partial credit, doesn't curve anything, very poor teaching skills, entire class is clueless, feigns that he cares about each individual by trying to memorize names while he gives exams that average in the 40-60's.
I am not sure why this guy is teaching at Vanderbilt. Lectures are incredibly confusing and poorly done as he consistently messes up derivations and says to "go look in the book" etc Favorite phrase was "you can try this one at home" as he never would do a single example problem in class. Plenty of WileyPlus homework that is not useful. DO NOT TAKE
I never write reviews, but I wanted to let other students know how amazing this professor was! Dr. Dutta was really helpful during office hours, very patient, and made the subject more interesting. You will have to put in A LOT of time on the homework, but it's worth it for the tests. I never thought I would get an A in physics! Great professor!
physics in general is a tough subject, he was way better than my 116a teacher. wish i had kept up with the homework because once you fall behind the wheels really come off the bus. besides dropping 1 of 3 exams, he doesnt have extra curving. strict grader (u cannot fake short answer trust me), but final was fair w repeat questions from exams
Physics is hard. DON'T try to take it unless 1) you abosolutely have to 2) you are crazily obssessed with it just like Dr. Dutta is. The class is hard, dry and requires tons of work put into it (but you can't blame it all on Dr. Dutta). Textbook is kind of necessary because you won't learn much in class. He gives out extra credits so take them.
Great professor. Had to work really hard though!
WileyPlus is horrible and will quickly become the bane of your existence, especially the weekly quizzes, but they are good practice for the tests. He tries to remember the names of everyone in the class, which never actually works, but it's a nice touch. You get to drop one test, so the grades aren't as low as it sounds. Go to office hours.
I breezed through physics 1 at vanderbilt, but had a very very difficult time with passing physics II with professor dutta. The material is much harder. Professor Dutta is extremely helpful outside of class, but his test are very very difficult. Dont take dutta unless you are obsessed with physics.
Professor Dutta is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is extremely good at teaching and despite having very little time to teach so much content, manages to do so successfully. Very interested in making sure he is doing everything to help students learn. HW isn't too hard. The tests are pretty reasonable. Final was very easy.
The tests are hard. Do the Wiley BEFORE the week of the test (at least 3 days in advance) and go over it a bit each day leading up to each test.
I loved Dr. Dutta. Very inspiring. Lots of hw, but not as difficult tests as everyone says. Yeah, they are still pretty hard (esp free response), but it's pretty fair based on how much you know. he grades out of 50, when the actual test is out of 55 (if you get 45/55, then he "curves" as if it's 45/50). Our all-multiple choice final was pretty easy
Dr. Dutta clearly cares about his students and wants them to learn. He does a very good job with explaining difficult concepts and is helpful during office hours. Tests are fair.
He probably responds faster than your significant other when you send him an email. You don't have to come to class all the time but the lectures are really interesting and inspirational. Do all the homework and make a real effort to understand physics rather than just try to plug in the numbers, then you can get more than 100%.
Dutta is the man. He's super into helping his students. People may be scared by him not curving anything, but he goes out of his way to make sure that as long as you're as invested in learning as he is in teaching, you'll get plenty of points thrown your way. Getting over 100 is definitely possible. Also this guy lifts
One of the best teachers at Vanderbilt and probably best in Physics department. Challenging class but if you follow along in lectures and know how to work all the problems he shows in class and on the homework, you can get an A with no prior experience. If you have the chance to take him, take him, simple as that. Also, he does lift.
I was unsure if I still wanted to major in physics after taking 1901, but taking a class with Dutta absolutely made me want to continue. He is very, very (very) passionate about physics and often deviates from the material to talk about miscellaneous physics things, but always makes it interesting. He's also really funny.
He's sassy, and it's a huge lecture, and he calls people out during lecture for talking. The material is hard, he goes fast, and we just don't learn the correct things for lab. His tests are tough, our average grades were way lower than other sections. You need to do a decent amount of learning on your own if you're not comfortable with physics
He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes sure that we understand the material conceptually, and thoroughly. I had never enjoyed Physics as much as I did in this class. Lectures are a breeze, exams can be a bit challenging but not extremely difficult. And he has a sense of humor that I can live with. 10/10 would take again!
I will admit I wasn't his biggest fan while in his class because physics has just always been hard for me, but now that I'm in physics 2, I would do anything to take him again. He really goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material and really breaks everything down. It is a tough class, but he is really good at what he does.
Overall had a fantastic time with him in Physics 1601. He makes his lecture fun and goes out of his way to help students understand the material. His test are difficult but not unfair and the homework definitely helps you drill the material for the test.
Dr. Dutta gives really helpful lectures, and if you keep up with the homework and make sure you understand everything you'll do fine. He doesn't curve and expects you to put in a good deal of time on your own practicing, but if you do that you can get an A. Not easy but he's very helpful and gladly worked with me outside class a lot.
He's terrible in lectures, never finishes problems he starts
Professor Dutta makes every one of his lectures entertaining and engaging. His tests are fairly straightforward and he his lenient on his free-response grading. The material on the tests are is exactly the same as homework and in class problems. If you are able to do the homework on your own, the test should be fine.
If you have any Physics background this class is very easy, as it only goes into the basics in each section covered. Additionally, the test questions are always the easier versions of the concepts discussed, and almost every test question is either from prior tests, the homework, or a clicker question in class. Dutta explains everything needed well
This class ranges in difficulty based on your prior physics experience. I had only taken algebra based physics in high school so all of the material I had learned before was easy for me but when it got to the new material it was very challenging. If you go to class and do your work you'll be fine. Dr. Dutta is very nice and very funny.
Dr. Dutta is amazing. Probably the most organized professor at Vanderbilt. His lectures are clear and easy to follow and he is great at explaining physics. The content is not difficult, but show up to class to see how he works out the tough questions. Very generous with extra credit. I got a 107, 74, 67, and 100 on his three midterms and got an A.
Dutta is awesome. He is really great at explaining physics and making hard concepts seem easy. He also gives a lot of extra credit through tests. He is also really helpful and nice during office hours. He even gave us brownies on the last day! One of the best profs I've had.
Professor Dutta is, in my experience, an above average science teacher. His lectures aren't exactly engaging, but he keeps things moving and asks good questions. When he's interested in a subject, he really lets his passion show, and he typically shares a nice anecdote per class. His tests are very fair and his chapter homework can be frustrating.
worst class ive ever taken. he lifts tho
If people say its too hard, they are just being picky... Tests are hard but its only a small portion of the grade, others like homework and clickers are easy 100%. So A is fairly easy if you work hard
Dutta is a fantastic lecturer, truly one of the best I've had. He explains concepts very well and clearly loves the material. This class was rather easy, going into the final the class average was about a 95. It's important to study fairly hard, especially on the mastering Physics problems and practice tests, since the test is basically identical.
Dutta is my favorite professor at Vanderbilt. I had never taken physics before, but Dutta is such an great lecturer that I was able to understand the concepts and keep up with the rest of the class. He keeps class interesting with demos and anecdotes. Understand homework, lecture questions, and previous test questions--they will be on the tests
Very funny guy, passionate about physics. Class is exceedingly fair, and old tests are available online to study from, which is great because questions are often repeated.
Decent professor, but not all he's cracked up to be (just looks good compared to the other options). It's a reasonable class, and he'll take time to get to know you personally if you go to office hours. I don't think he means to come off this way, but he can be quite condescending at times. Still, he's by far the best option for 1601.
Dr. Dutta easily earned his reputation for being the best Gen Phys professor. His lectures were clear and easy on the eyes, though take note that he will pass some examples for the sake of time. His slides are all available online and makes great study material, but please do show up for class. Homework is arduous, but the tests are quite doable.
Easily the best professor I've had so far at Vandy. He goes out of his way to make his lectures engaging and actually cares about his students' learning. His tests are pretty fair (doing the homework and reading the slides will get you a good grade). I highly recommend him.
Gives a ton of online homework, as well as minimal partial credit during the free response sections of tests. Dutta is funny, but goes out of his way to drag students for using their phone, sleeping, not paying attenction etc., which feels unnecessary. He goes through material very fast, which is quite challenging if you did not take AP physics.
Professor Dutta is so funny. He tries to show some cool videos sometimes to make lectures more interesting. He does clicker questions, so go to class!! His exams are hard, but it's helpful to look over notes. Mastering physics hw can be a lot, so start the hw early! Also, his final is a lot of repeat questions from past exams.
Dr. Dutta is a great lecturer. There's a lot of material to cover but he explains it well and is accessible if you need him. There's a big grade cushion with the homeworks and having a drop test is nice too.
While the course material was challenging, Dutta's exams were always fair and there were no surprises when it came to the tests. If you put the work in, you could get a good grade.
Although this class covers very difficult material, Dutta breaks down all of the concepts and makes the material easy to understand. He is also a hilarious professor who shares lots of memorable jokes/gifs/memes. His tests are not the easiest but if you do the mastering/practice tests you can do well. Overall, great class; I highly recommend!
Dutta seems to really care about his students and really tries his best to teach everything as well as possible. He definitely succeeds in doing this, but the material is still hard so you have to attend lectures and actually put in work outside of class. Tests are straight-forward and all the questions have already been seen before.
I highly recommend Dutta over all other prof. For you pre-meds, take 1601 with Dutta over any other professor for 1501. Make sure you do all the Mastering Physics problems and problems on the slides. Tests can be hard but if you study the homework and slides, you should be fine! He's really funny during lecture and shows great demonstrations.
Dutta is awesome! The material isn't easy but if you do the Mastering Physics and the questions in the powerpoint you should do well. He's very fair and the tests are usually questions you've seen before. Dutta is also hilarious and super helpful in office hours. Would definitely take him over anyone for 1501!
Hard class for people who've never took AP Physics. His lectures are very hard to read because he writes small and he skips through a lot of materials in the powerpoint slides. He has answers in the powerpoint for the practice problems but he does not upload how he solved it, which made it difficult to understand without the help of chegg.
Dutta is probably one of the best profs I've had at Vanderbilt. Problems are explained pretty thoroughly in class, and if you do all the problems in the powerpoint, exams are doable and fair. He's also extremely funny and finds a way to connect astronomy and cosmology to problems in class, which makes the class more applicable. Definitely recommend
Dutta is the man and by far one of the best professors I've had in my short time here at Vanderbilt. His lectures are easy to understand and if you pay attention in that class and do just a little extra work outside, you will get the grade you want. #Dutta4President2020
The class is easy if you study old tests and do his practice tests (you will have seen most of the questions). However if you don't do this and just study the mastering physics/lecture notes you probably won't do well. Averages on all tests were in the C range. 3 tests (1 gets dropped, so both are 30% of grade), final 25%, mastering 15%
He's cool, but his teaching style was different from how I learn so I had to do a lot of outside learning. You don't need to go to the lectures, only about 2/3 of the material you need is in the lectures. He is really cool though and caring.
Dr. Dutta is one of the best physics professors at Vanderbilt. Try to take him by any means. He wants his students to succeed and is very helpful in doing so!
Dr. Dutta's lectures are enjoyable, but they tend to focus more on basic concepts and demonstrations. I wish he focused more on in-depth problem solving. One is graded by so few things during the semester that it is hard to recover from one poor performance. As with any physics class, the material is hard, but Dutta is a good professor.
He is a pretty good lecturer, but the tests (which make up almost the entirety of your grade) are completely multiple choice with no partial credit. If you get a few questions wrong your grade will suffer.
Dutta is an amazing professor and lecturer and reminds me why I chose to major in physics. Total 180 from 1st sem in 1911. HOWEVER, his class is not easy. I went in already having done multi and having a 5 on AP Physics C and I still had to work really hard for an A. 3 exams @ 20% (lowest is dropped making the other two 30%) and a final @25%.
3 tests, all MC which makes it impossible for partial credit. Final grade is mainly the tests and final - there is no curve at end. Lectures are essential to doing well - go to class and you'll probably do fine.
Professor Dutta is the best science professor I've ever had at Vanderbilt. Go to lectures - he explains difficult concepts in the book extremely clearly. His sample tests usually consist of 50% of the real test. The other problems on tests are very similar to ones we have done in class/homework. He truly wants you to do well!
I am a physics god so I thought it was an easy A, in fact I even got a 100. I won the international physics olympiad for 9 years straight so I thought it was kind of easy but I still had to work hard #dutta4pres2020
Dutta is really good at explaining the content but the tests are unfair. Only 3 of them and they are all 14 questions so one little mistake can cost you a letter grade in the class. That being said, you know what to expect going into them and he does drop your lowest exam so he's there to help. Dutta is probably your best option in this department
Dutta!! This man is the best professor I have ever had. He is pure genius and is just incredible at explaining material. He really wants his students to understand and has frequent office hours where he makes sure to explain in careful detail whatever your question is. Do not pass up the chance to have him as your professor.
Dr. Dutta is a great instructor; he is very good at explaining physics and is super accessible when you get stuck. The class is a lot of work, and keeping up is key. You should work on physics about once a day if possible to succeed.
If you can, TAKE PHYSICS WITH DR. DUTTA! He's one of the kindest and funniest professors I've ever had - so willing to meet with you outside of class and go over problems in office hours. Lectures are SO HELPFUL - even though attendance isn't mandatory, DON'T SKIP. Tests are all multiple choice, and usually straight from the homework problems.
Dr. Dutta is a great professor and has a great reputation among students; he is a really clear in lectures, but you still need to do a lot of independent HW and studying to do well, cramming will not work
Dutta is the best intro science prof hands down. Super sweet guy, gives very clear and engaging lectures. His class is VERY fair, if you put the work in and pay attention in class you will do well. Test questions are very similar to practice exams, so if you have old exams too you are set. Do anything you can to take physics with him.
Truly an amazing guy. Knows his stuff in and out, and takes his lectures seriously but not too seriously. He even makes an effort to learn names in a lecture hall of 100+. He has a great teaching style, and is always there to help his students.
Dutta is hilarious and his class is very fair. It's not even worth taking Physics with anyone other than Dutta.
Great teacher. If you have somewhat of a brain you'll get an A. I showed up to class every day and paid attention and somewhat studied and I literally got above a 100 in the class. Take him.
There are so many excellent reviews here that this one seems unnecessary. However, I would like to reiterate that Dr. Dutta explains concepts extremely clearly and with real life examples. This class is accessible to everyone, including those who are not STEM majors. You also don't need to be good at math contrary to what you may think.
The content in this class is difficult, but it is possible to do well. He teaches well, but some of the slide problems aren't explained- you have to figure it out yourself. Tests are 14 MC - difficult, but doable. Based off concepts in class. It's possible to recover, started with a C, recovered to an A. Watch all lectures and do all the homework.
Amazing professor. Super sweet and hilarious. I wish I had him in a normal semester, zoom classes with Dutta doesnt do him justice. Very accessible outside of class, and patient with students who take longer to understand the material. It isnt worth taking physics here with anyone else besides this dude!
Dr. Dutta is THE BEST! Even though the class wasn't easy, I'm so glad he made me work through the problems and was always available to help understand concepts because I did really well on the physics portion of the MCAT and I owe it all to him! Take his class if you want to actually understand physics and handle any problem on the MCAT.
Great choice for physics, really cares about you learning the content and has lots of office hours that are so helpful for problem solving questions. Tests reflect lectures/hw fairly, and he scales them to help your grade a bit (but all MC, so no partial credit). I never enjoyed physics, but Dutta makes learning way easier if you put in the work!
His tests are pretty difficult and all multiple choice, aka no partial credit. If you pay attention in lectures and study you'll be fine.
Dr. Dutta is so nice and willing to help. The exams were challenging but very much like the class examples/homework. Make sure you keep up with the material and do not leave the homework until the last minute and you'll be fine. If you have to take PHYS 1601, take him.
Dutta is amazing and made a dull intro physics class way more fun than it should have been. Always super accessible and helpful with my questions. I had experience with physics from AP, so that probably made the class easier, but generally it wasn't bad except for a few test problems. Recommend strongly
Best physics professor I ever had. His exams are basically the same as the homework and in-class questions.
Professor Dutta makes the Physics 1602 material really manageable. He moves quickly in his lectures, but stops to do cool demonstrations occasionally. Homework is tough, but go to office hours because he will work through problems with you. Tests are all multiple choice and open notes, so be organized and you'll do well.
The classic teaching-an-intro-course-might-as-well-make-it-fun college prof. Does cool demos in class and is really passionate about the material, is also hilarious and makes jokes during class. Lectures are solid. Tests are 14 MC Q's straight out of HW and slides. Gives back a free question on midterms. Mastering Physics HW is long but usually ok
Dutta is great. Awesome demonstrations in class. Very fun guy who enjoys teaching Physics. Watching lecture in class is good, but also reading the textbook will help solidify the knowledge. Don't fall behind in Mastering Physics
Dr. Dutta is the best. He makes a hard class fun and is super passionate. Just make sure you start the MasteringPhysics HW ahead of time and go to office hours if you can't do some of it. Midterms are online, open note, not proctored. 14 MC very similar to class problems and HW. Go to class even if it's just for the demonstrations.
Great prof! Really cares about making sure his students understand the material. Easy to access after class and during office hours. Extremely organized. Test questions are based on the slide problems and Mastering Physics, so do those and you'll do great. Most of the grade is tests, but you get to drop one midterm. Really nice dude.
Dr. Dutta is the best professor I've had at Vandy. He's passionate about physics and cares about students. Understand problems from lectures and homework well, and you'll do well on tests. He also drops the lowest midterm grade. I hated physics in high school, and was dreading it in college, but now it's one of my favorite subjects as a pre-med.
I have not had a class that I felt was more fair. He tells you exactly how to prepare for the exams and you get a drop on your lowest one. His lectures are clear and have fun demos. So many exam questions are just taken from problems done in class, lecture slides, and homework problems. Go to class and actually do the problems and you're good.
Prof. Dutta teaches fast, but he knows the material, his explanations are clear, and in-class demos are helpful. Exams are solely multiple-choice, but all open note with questions ripped from homework/class. Go to class but don't count on a lot of help from office hours. Overall, a much better choice than the other prof options!
Dr. Dutta is an amazing lecturer, his method of teaching is great (he shows lots of real world examples with videos and demonstrations) and captivates you attention throughout the whole lecture. The only negative aspect of this class is that you only get 50 minutes to do the midterms, which didn't feel like enough time. Stay ontop of HW/PWP probs.
Dr. Dutta is an incredible and very fair instructor. His lectures are clear and his tests are straightforward if you've understood the problems in class and on the homework. He also supplements the lectures with demonstrations...like a rocket cart that he rides across the classroom. If you need to take physics, take Dutta.
Prof. Dutta's class is very straightforward. 3 tests (one gets dropped), 50 minutes, 14 questions, all multiple choice. Most of the questions are from the homework and his lectures. Tests are usually curved by a few points. As long as you understand the notes and how to do all of the homework problems this class shouldn't be too bad.
Do not take anyone else for PHYS 1601! Dutta is the absolute best. Lectures are very engaging; he does a demonstration almost every class and is very funny. Tests are open book online (all multiple choice), and he drops the lowest midterm.
Dutta is super funny and very clear in lectures. He does demonstrations a lot (he rode across the room on a fire-extinguisher-powered bike once) and drops your lowest midterm. Very fair w/ his grading and accessible outside of class. Maybe avoid if multiple-choice questions are not your strength. Stay on top of hw and studying and you'll do well!
If you have to take physics take Dutta. His lectures and examples are very clear. Exams are MC and usually straightforward questions that are mostly from homework. The homework takes a long time though.
Everything you need to know he'll explain in lecture super well and clearly. Homework takes forever and is pretty hard but most of the exam questions are taken straight from it. Exams are online but only 14 questions so if you get one wrong that's like 7% down. Dutta doesn't seem to care about his students, though, kind of mean and unavailable.
Dr. Dutta is one of the best professors I've had at Vandy. His lectures are very clear and his office hours were so helpful I didn't need to get a tutor. I didn't think I would like physics, but Dutta changed my mind!
Class is really full so it's difficult to get individual attention unless you go to office hours, but Dr. Dutta handles it well. He always answers emails quickly, his lectures are clear, and he provides a lot of demos and examples. If you do the homework and understand example problems from lectures, you'll do really well on the exams.
It is obvious Prof. Dutta is very intelligent and is very fascinated by physics, however, this class is very fast paced and leaves him little to no time to throughly teach the content, which often leads to lots of homework and not a lot of in class examples.
I would not recommend Dr. Dutta. All exams are online, multiple choice, unproctored. This format is condusive to academic dishonesty and does little to prevent honor code violations. Also, there's no way to get partial credit by showing your work. The tests are 85% of the grade and there's no attendance grade (or any sort of buffer besides HW).
His lectures are very good, but very fast. Homework is a lot of masteringphysics problems. There is no curve or extra credit, but if you do all the homework the exams are pretty reasonable. It's a big class so it can be difficult to get help on problems. He does come off as a bit intimidating, but he is thoroughly and completely fair.
He is very kind and wants us to learn. My favorite part of his class was how he connected the concepts we were learning to the real world. My least favorite was that the tests are 14 multiple-choice questions, so if you make a few mistakes your grade drops a lot. If you pay attention to the slideshow problems and homework, they're not too bad.
Tips: I learned after taking both 1601/1602 that getting a good grade in this class comes down to having all the information ready in front of you went taking the test. I printed out all of the slide problems and made sure everything was organized and I improved significantly from 1601.
Overall, I really enjoyed this class. It took a few weeks for me to figure out how to succeed, but I got it down and did really well for the rest of the semester. All it takes is paying attention to the lectures (you'll see many similar problems from the lectures on the tests) and doing the homework. Dr. Dutta's office hours were a big help too.
I had Prof Dutta for 1601 and 1602 and I thought he was a great physics teacher and most likely your best option at Vandy. It is impossible to teach every aspect of the course in class and you have to learn the small details by doing the homework. But overall, the exams are straightforward and are based on homework and in-class problems.
With the tests now in person, I would not recommend taking Dutta. He definitely knows physics but he is condescending when you do not understand something and spends too much time in class on proofs instead of practice problems. He requires you to do too much out of class to succeed/understand and the homework was unnecessarily difficult.
Really solid choice for 1601. Not super exciting but pretty good teacher. Tests are a big part of your grade though and the multiple choice format is super unforgiving so study hard for those, but not too much homework and quizzes are pretty easy. Take him if you can.
Dutta is a great professor. His tests were in-person but he often gives extra points, and you get to drop your lowest midterm. His exams are easy if you keep up with the material and study the practice test. He sets you up for success. You will do well if you actually put in the work: definitely take Dutta!
physics isn't the most interesting subject, but prof. dutta made it fun. his lectures can be a bit slow at times (i was in the 8am so that might be why) but he explains things very very well and provides lots of resources outside of lectures as well.
Though PHYS 1601 can seem daunting, Dutta made it incredibly doable. His tests are all multiple choice, but he curves each test grade. He also has an incredible formula sheet policy: you can bring sheets from past exams and end up with 4 full sheets for the final. Go to lecture, take good notes, and make thorough formula sheets and you'll be set.
He's a really good professor and can explain tough concepts well. He also went viral (search "me failing physics meanwhile my professor" on TikTok) which was fun. Downsides are the tests are all multiple choice and are worth a lot and can be quite tough. Upside is though that many questions are from slides and homework.
I had his 8 am Gen. Physics class, and honestly, his teaching made the class for me. He's so funny and also explains seemingly complicated topics with ease to help students understand them well.
Dutta is simply amazing! Good lectures, fun demonstrations, office hours are amazing, etc. Exams are multiple choice with a generous notes sheet policy. Worth the 8 AM!
Dutta is the best professor ever. As long as you go to the lectures, do all the slide problems, and mastering physics, you will do fine on the exam since he uses same problems. Lectures aren't mandatory but you have to go because the stuff he teaches is on the exam. No textbook. Drops lowest midterm. Great office hours & records it. Very clear.
Attendance is not required, make sure to go to every class. Dutta goes over examples in class that could be on exams, and he never posts the worked out examples. Understand all examples and mastering physics well, as all exams are mc and are quite difficult with time constraints, making it very hard to get an A.
Had to work really hard but feel like my IQ went up a few points
Professor Dutta was simply the best option for PHYSICS. MAKE SURE TO TAKE HIM!!! His lectures are simple and he has a lot of demonstrations. Holds a lot of office hours and will work the problem out with you!!
LOVED DR. DUTTA he was the best. He made physics really understandable and he was very accessible outside of class. He is a must have for physics! I am a pursuing a minor in physics because of him. 10/10.
Professor Dutta makes physics very enjoyable for his students and is good at keeping everyone's attention. However, all exams are 15 multiple choice questions, so every wrong answer (sometimes just choosing negative instead of positive or vice versa) is -7 points. Mastering physics takes forever and most of the problems were not taught in class.
Prof Dutta is one of the best instructors I've had at Vandy. I can tell he's really passionate about the subject and teaches it really well. There's a lot of homework, but you get multiple attempts and he's really good about going over the problems during office hours. Test problems are often similar to problems he discussed in class.
Introductory Physics is hard. But Prof. Dutta makes it fun and exciting. Lots of extra credit. Lots of work to do outside of class.
GOAT Professor. Go to lectures and do the practice problems and it's an easy A. No curve, but each midterm is scaled an extra 7% and can drop 1 midterm. Final is online.
Professor Dutta has probably been my favorite professor at Vanderbilt. He is funny and engaging which is helpful because lectures are important. Most of the tests are based on lecture questions or homework questions which makes them pretty straight forward. This class is a breeze if you've taken AP Physics and still very doable if you haven't.
Super, super nice professor and person in general. Very generous and fair grader for the exams. The exams consist of the homework and slide problems, so it is very easy to get an A or A+ in his class. His lectures are also very interesting and entertaining.
I love his lectures and the interesting demonstrations in class. You can easily get an A if you do all the problems on the slides and in the hw.
Dr. Dutta is AMAZING! Best Vandy professor I have ever had. This course is essentially just a faster, more difficult version of AP Physics, so if you've taken it, 1601 will be a breeze. Dr. Dutta is extremely helpful during office hours and curves exams. Lectures are ridiculously engaging, and he often covers exact exam problems, so don't skip!!
10/10 would recommend. took this last sem, amazing prof. taken for formality so it was easy but he made studying really fun. he started the semester by saying there won't be any extra credit and ended up giving around 7+ points of extra credit. basically all the tests had extra credit except the last midterm, so it's easy to end with over 100%
Even though class is not mandatory, his lectures are really engaging and worth attending. The tests are hard because they are only multiple choice with no partial credit. You have to study hard to do well if you've never taken physics.
Physics will always be a more challenging class, especially for those not as math-inclined, but Dr. Dutta makes it manageable. There is a lot of homework, but it is also manageable. Best thing to do to study for tests is use the practice test he provides. He does lots of demonstrations, and is overall a pretty funny guy. Would recommend for 1601.
[PHYS 3200]. Great class! Started with a in-depth review of statistics, which was very helpful. The text was hard to follow, but Dutta's knack for clarifying difficult proofs helped a lot. Lectures were very engaging and full of fascinating stories about Stat Mech OG's. Problem sets were long but quite interesting. Learned a ton and had a blast!
Professor Dutta is really good at explaining complicated physics concepts and equations. His tests are all easy to get high scores if you listen carefully on classes and do the homework (not heavy at all!). Recommend to anyone who want to study physics!
Professor Dutta makes a challenging physics course manageable. Engaging lectures, plenty of practice problems, and helpful office hours. Even if you're not math-inclined, the course is doable with diligent studying using resources like Unstuck ai. Overall, a great learning experience!
Professor Dutta might be the best teacher that I have ever had. He is an expert at making notoriously difficult concepts extremely clear. He is extremely knowledgeable of everyday applications of the physics concepts that were discussed in the class. Demonstrations were frequent and always applied directly to the material.
One of the best professors inside Vandy.
Very interesting lectures and very good professor
Just Don't. he's a good teacher but the worst professor
Dr. Dutta has mastered the art of teaching. He explains concepts so well and is very engaging. Most challenging part of the class is all exams are multiple choice (so not a lot of leeway for missing questions if you want a high grade). However, most questions are from homework or slides, so go to class and review notes and you will do fine.
Three midterms, one dropped. Final exam online. Annoying homework problems, overall not too difficult but not easy
i have never taken physics before. he cares and his lectures are nice. but i just wish he answered his questions on the slides or with the questions visible. i did not do the best but i feel like thats partly my fault. but if you have never taken physics before, it does get overwhelming and i feel like some steps could've been walked through more
Professor Dutta is excellent at explaining physics concepts and frequently uses demonstrations in class. Make sure to do ALL of the slide problems, as you will likely see a few on midterm exams. His office hours were helpful as well. The class has 3 midterms and a final. He grades everything on a slight curve.
Office hours are recorded on Zoom and posted for whole class. Very hard to work with to reschedule exam due to extenuating circumstances. That said, it is evident that he wants his students to succeed. Lectures are engaging and he gives real-world connections. Do the practice problems and watch his videos for clarification, and you will be fine.
Professor Dutta is easily one of the most passionate teachers at Vanderbilt. He gives incredible lectures and really wants to see you succeed. However, the tests are challenging, though fair, and a very high weight of your grade. Use office hours and other resources and you will be fine. Definitely don't miss out on taking him, just study up.
I love this man. Such a gem. Class isn't that hard if you've taken physics so I skipped a lot. When I did go to class tho I loved watching Dutta teach, you can tell he loves his job and cares about his students. Slide problems, mastering physics, and sample exams are your friends.
Good professor with excellent study material.
take dutta if you can! by far the best physics prof for gen physics courses. explains concepts clearly and offers lots of help. workload is beyond manageable and he's also pretty funny
Dr. Dutta is amazing! He is very passionate about physics and helpful in office hours. The slide problems and mastering physics can seem overwhelming, but make sure you complete all of them. Attend lectures, it is easy to fall behind and not understand the content, it's fast paced. Take Dr. Dutta, he's the best!
This class was very large, so professor Dutta put a lot of effort into making the lectures engaging and entertaining with in-class questions and demonstrations. The homework was relevant to the content and exams. I had already taken classes in high school with similar content, so it was very easy for me; not everyone shared this experience.
Bless this man and his family. An outstanding lecturer who would have the most memorable physics demonstrations. You will never get a question on an exam that you haven't seen before (questions are pulled from Mastering Physics, lectures, and practice exams)
First time Dutta teaches this class. Clear explaination, and answer any questions during lecture. First test was hard with an average of 78% (with curve) but the 2nd mid term and final were much better. Despite having lots of homework, he gave generous extra credit. He even wrote a quantum story that is very accessible to non-majors.
1602 is a different beast compared to 1601 with Dutta. Although he is a great professor, he purposely tries to trick you on some of the exams. The content in 1602 is generally harder than 1602 so try not to miss lectures. For exams, he takes questions from: 1.) the lecture slides, 2.) MasteringPhysics, and 3.) exams from previous years.
1602 is much more difficult than 1601 but the tests are either the hardest thing you've ever seen or the easiest. Much more calculus involved.
I have praised this man before and I'll do it again. One of the best profs on Vandy campus. He really cares, but the class 100% relies on the work that you put in. If he allows you one test drop for this class, by all means, rely on the third test as your drop. Don't mess up the other ones.
I loved Dutta! He made me love physics for the first time! So happy to teach and so gifted at teaching! I loved the real life applications! Super organized and you are solely tested on material off the slides and homework problems. It's time consuming to study for the tests, (dont wait until the night before!) but a B-A is achievable. Worth 8AM!!!
