Amazing teacher. Strict, but fair, and will praise you if you do your work well.
She needs to improve her pronunciation of words and not repeat concepts. She goes to fast with the material and still does not finish in time.
Very thick accent, intellectual meandering due to her poor command of english therefore repeating herself often to clarify content. Often screwed up recording the podcasts, which were the only saving grace for figuring out what she said in lecture: rewind..listen..rewind..listen "OH SHE SAID LUNAR SOCIETY" ...yeah. Doing the readings are important.
She can't explain for her life along with her incomprehensible accent. If you have her, drop her class or switch out. Those who have her have experienced great mental pain and had the lowest average out of all the history classes in the school.
Accent is terrible like other ppl said... she has the type of two different accents mixed in one... had to ask my friends for reclarification... and a true boring class.. A warning to just drop her class..
her accent can easily be understood by listening carefully. she is funny and explains well but listening carefully is important
She does have an accent, but she's still understandable. It's just a few words that she cannot pronounce correctly. Feel free to raise your hand and ask. She won't reject your questions!
The worst prof i have ever had, her accent is awful and I fall sleep all the time in her lectures because she does not know how to teach to make the lecture interesting for students. she always reads from papers and doesn't make eye contact with students.
SO YANG is extremely fair and helpful whenever you reach out to her. She does has a thick accent but it wasn't a problem for me. She writes certain terms on the for clarification. And to all the ESL students, she is quite forgiving with some grammar errors but it is important that you she knows what you are trying to say in your essay.
Does not know a thing about what she is teaching. Contradicts herself. Is extremely vague and unhelpful when you approach her for my clarity on her already unclear instructors. Very unresponsive with emails. Seems like she isnt there to teach but just through the class. Groups students. Doesnt read assignments.
This instructor was the one of the worst I've ever had. She constantly goes off on tangents completely unrelated to course material to the point where it becomes extremely difficult to determine actual important course content. Her testing methods require you to regurgitate her exact words, and terms.
thick accent, off-topic lectures, helpless assignments, tedious tests.
Does not know how to teach. Explains our Midterm Exam A WEEK before the exam, and tells us we still have a quiz right after we're done out exam.
Soyang is quite a great professor. She's the most helpful, and willing to accommodate to your needs. Her lectures are slightly slow, and she often pauses, so listening to the podcast at 2x the speed would be recommended. She really enjoys using quizzes for attendance, and the quizzes aren't easy.
Care genuinely for her subjects. Listens to students. Slightly unorganized (beware). Pop quizzes are often (every class).
I like that she makes you apply knowledge, rather than memorizing content, and in that sense the quizzes are valuable to develop that skill. I wish she would explain the articles we read- sometimes I think she doesn't actually understand them. Seems to have little knowledge about art of the past 10 years. Condescending when I asked her for help.
Grading is way off. Several diff people are marking for her. A friend who handed in a paper way past the deadline got an 80 while I, an A student who loves writing research papers, got super low. When approached about it, the prof gave the explanation that there was way too much research and not enough of a personal opinion. For a research paper.??
A very tough grader. She tends to ramble a lot during lectures which makes it hard to follow along and understand what the key topics are for the quizzes. Her quizzes had questions that did not always deal with the biggest point in the text or what she lectured. Soyang was not approachable and was condescending when asking for help.
Terrible teacher. Very disorganized. Soyang uses her courses in the past and recycles them, copying and pasting the curriculum. She provides tests and quizzes every week along with harsh markings. If you can't memorize or follow through with her lectures and textbooks, don't even bother taking her courses.
Unfortunately I had her three times for the same class, receiving horrible marks. I was certain I was just stupid because I couldnt comprehend how and what she was teaching and what she wanted from me. Until I finally took the course a fourth time with a different teacher did I get an 87 and felt confident discussing ideas in class. She was bad
She was constantly saying my writing is not clear and my comprehension is bad. I got a 97 in academic English, I never understood what she wanted, I asked if I'm going to fail or pass and she wouldn't answer. The quizzes are way off of the readings. I will never recommend anyone take her class, please don't waste your time and money.
She ruined an interesting art history course. Avoid her at all costs! Unfair marker and gives random pop quizzes on content that didn't have to do with the previous lectures. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!
Yeah... its already been a few weeks and I already failed her pop quiz. Can't afford to retake this class again with her so I just dropped out.
While there is a lot of work to be done in Soyangs class, she makes it extremely interesting and fun. I failed every single quiz and still managed to get an 80+ in her class. As long as you pay attention and participate, you'll do well. She's also super understanding and caring of her students. Highly recommend her.
Personally speaking, I found that the academic readings of the course were adequate. But her teaching methods are way off and not up to par. Never received proper feedback after extensively asking. She was not nice or helpful. In my experience she was uprofessional. Drop her course Be cautious and make sure you're treated fairly. Talk to Guidance
Soyang's lectures are not the best because she constantly repeats herself, is somewhat unorganized, and there is always something wrong with her podcasts. However, she does reupload podcasts from previous years to make up for them. The quizzes are almost impossible to do well because the questions are so obscure and even if you read the chapters.
knows what she's talking about but constantly repeats herself + spends a quarter of the class trying to be charming/talking about her life. This would be fine if she wasn't so harsh about students wasting her time. technical Issues every clas. Refers to quizes and exams as "very easy" but hands out tests that over half the class (over 50 ppl) fail
Do you love being ignored? Sign up for art history with Soyang Park! She'll fail you on everything you do and refuse to give you 5 minutes of her time to go over it! :) I had so much fun dropping it A WEEK before the final grades were submitted. Plan to have the whole class on the same side MINUS her. She doesn't care what the majority thinks.
At first Soyang comes off as funny, bubbly and new age however then you have your first exam and you realize her claim of "not believing in memorization, exams are conceptual" just means she won't make a review file and you have to memorize all her lectures. If you go to her for help or to change a mark - hope you can handle being shot down harshly
Very informative and clear with lectures. Pop quizzes were challenging but helpful for understanding readings and leading into lectures. She explains abstract concepts well and is a witty professor who engages with the class and encourages discussions. Great class and exams and midterms are as outlined and straightforward.
Soyang Park is the teacher you want at OCAD if you're seeking to challenge yourself and learn to think outside the box. I found her incredibly responsive to my emails and she is even just a great person to have a casual conversation with about art, philosophy and politics. I found her so approachable and look forward to learning with her again soon
I had her in my last year before graduating she constantly said my essays were off topic and she couldnt understand my writing, i got a 94 in english if she cant understand that, have someone else read and mark it, i wouldnt recomend you take her
Be prepared. This teacher is about to encourage you to become a great critical thinker.
At first she's very sweet and chill, until you try to talk to her. Don't bother emailing her for clarification or questions unless you like getting your intelligence insulted or spoken to condescendingly. Will tell you you're "wasting her time" while writing 3 paragraphs about reading the syllabus instead of answering your "yes or no" question.
no good.
I felt like my intelligence was insulted. Honestly not a fun. The level of unprofessionalism in the way she acts so condescending towards students who just ask for help is disheartening. I did enjoy the topics in the class, but I felt like that experience was ruined by her behaviour towards the students.
If you offer her critical feedback, be ready for her to post it publicly in a passive-aggressive manner, and grade you according to the feedback you've given. To quote a previous comment "Run."
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Patronizing, non accommodating, and condescending. Assigns work as if students have no other classes, is not understanding or helpful. Insults your intelligence and broadcasts it to the rest of the class. Wrote in an email a "professor of my rank" would never give feedback even tho its terribly lackluster.
love yourself and don't take her course.
Awful teacher. Isn't understandable. Isn't clear with instructions or organized at all.
She's quite difficult to understand (respectfully her accent is quite thick). You will 100% be either more confused or insulted when emailing her with questions. A Holier-than-thou prof.
Gives horrible feedback on assignments, less than most of my other professors. would not allow for a meeting with her during her official office hours to discuss an assignment citing that if I am confused I'm not trying hard enough. Has a holier than though attitude and some of her lectures were a bit uncomfortable (especially one about LGBT).
Every week you have to read around 40 pages readings and write a reading response. the workload and the difficulty of the readings are a lot for someone whom English is not their first language. You should be prepared to spend a lot of time for this course even compared to your core classes. You will learn a a lot but I won't recommend!!!!!!!!!
I read and listened to hours on hours of lectures each week, but I had a great time. Soyang is funny, and gives excellent feedback to students who seek it out. She is accessible outside of class, and I received a lot of support in writing my final paper. Shes specific about what she likes, but once you pinpoint what that is then you will do well
Literally wouldn't give us any help when we needed it and would not answer emails. We were told that we had to do everything on our own and if we didn't do well it was our own fault. Too many hours of readings and recorded lectures and unclear guidelines for assignments.
She does not know how to do her job. She makes her students teach other students. If you ask her a question she claims its out fault for not studying even thought we do study. We can no contact her at all because she does not respond to emails. She does not explain anything at all
I have taken many courses with Soyang! She has a very specific way of teaching and if you don't clue into that, her course will be hard. The classes she's really passionate about (east asian art) are her better ones, I learned a lot! Online teaching is hard for her and it's sad to see students saying she's a bad prof just because she has an accent.
the workload of her class deserves one whole credit i'm glad I dropped this class earlier and focused on my other classes
love history but this class? hell. she said the n word has positive contemporary meaning now, so she said it. asked us to never contact her, Under no circumstances. questions were not answered in depth and were answered by other students. She always blamed us for not understanding . Condescending. Confusing lectures. So many tangents in lecture.
Honestly, my experience with Soyang Park was terrible. I was forced to take this class as part of my program requirement while accommodating my other courses. Her teaching style was tedious and she does not care about your opinion whatsoever. Go to her WordPress website and see how she mocks all these reviews said about her. Absolute clownery.
If you want my honest opinion about Professor Park, I would first like to say that she is mediocre at best. Just do the readings and pay attention and don't skip class and you'll get a decent mark.
Horrible at explaining and teaching, puts you under insane pressure and fails you very quickly. She doesn't listen to her student and extremely rude.
The assigned texts in this course are challenging but foundational to those looking to do an MA. Soyang is excellent at speaking to the gaps between theory and reality. Be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time outside of class reading and thinking through concepts. I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone looking for an easy ride.
Listen, I've been depressed for several years in my life, but this course took it to a new low. Sure, I earned a decent grade, but at what cost? I learned nothing directly from the professor. The grading criteria is unclear and this professor is truly, truly condescending. Save yourself and take any other instructor.
Please do not take her class if you want to keep your sanity, her course is so confusing and unorganized and work heavy. There are quizzes every single week that you only have 10 minutes to complete on readings that are sometimes 50 pages long, along with other quizzes that just seem to pop up randomly. Her teaching is painful and so stressful.
Worst professor ever, she doesn't even know how to teach, avoid her at all costs, run.
avoid at all costs. doesn't answer questions clearly, gives way too much homework (i have never received this much work from any prof i've had at ocad). very passive aggressive and uses lectures from 2016 instead of teaching the class updated material. quizzes are short timed and gives no warnings prior to any changes.
Very tough grader, will deduct points for things not included in the assignment or test criteria. Resistant to criticism
avoid her, no joke avoid her at all costs. this is your warning you will regret this. the hardest marker will never admit if she's in the wrong. if the entire class fails, she would say its the student's fault rather than take responsibility for having garbage teaching
Soyang park is a terrible prof. barely understands English and she would grill you about grammar. very out of pocket, and she is not an understanding person at all. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS FR.
Every week there are quizzes before the lecture on the readings. Readings are intense and long. You're quizzed on them before you receive the lecture on them. Quizzes are several short answer questions youre given a very short 10 minutes to do. Its intense and you'll likely fail a few. 3 tests on top of weekly quizzes that are very difficult.
Random grades without a clear standard. Poorly prepared materials. Extremely rude.
The worst teacher I've ever seen. The homework was not clear and random giving the grades
Avoid this professor AMAP. A class consumes lots of energy and lots of time. Requires reading every week & a quiz (with 10 mins) on the weekly reading material. The sentence was not smooth, the preface did not match, and even the subtitles were not recognized, in her lectures. Money suffers and the more it learns, the more it kills interest.
Park is the absolute worst. Avoid her at ALL COSTS. She does not care if you have concerns about your marks. She will keep them as is. This course was lecture-heavy and had readings galore. Expect weekly quizzes on readings and be given 10 minutes to write them. Marking is so strict and she likes to embarrass students if they are wrong.
Please listen to me: I have never faced such difficulty because of the irresponsibility of a professor. Her class was a terrible, terrible experience, would strongly advise avoiding at all costs. Very tough grader. For the sake of your mental stability, it's best to stay away.
Professor's appalling biases, utter disorganization, neglectful and outdated teaching methods, and detrimental negativity create an utterly toxic and counterproductive learning environment. Immediate and drastic improvement is needed to salvage any semblance of academic value.
This professor is not having a great grading rubric for the students. Heavy reading and heavy lecture. Very disrespectful to the student who has not able to do what her requirements are. She likes to embarrass students when they no doing good rather motivating and guiding them to correct their mistakes. Suck experiences EVER.
Kinda old style teach method, having one to two long like forever lectures to watch. Literally pull up a few years ago prerecord lectures for students.
This professor is not very friendly, she speaks very rudely, and she is not very good at teaching, very old way of teaching.
ughh...don't even know how to say this professor, just try your best to avoid her courses, trust me and the ppl who commented down below. Otherwise, you will have a bad experience that stays ever in ur university life.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. I was taught by her for 3 weeks. Dropped out because she is such a difficult grader. Her courses are heavy on quizzes, reading responses, reading, and lectures. She blamed my low grade on not reading the syllabus and when I clearly did my best.
Bad ratings are inaccurate. Good prof teaching with high standards. Hard work merits good grades. Lazy students suffer and complain.
Oh my god horrible grader wow. Literally failed everything when I know for a fact I provided enough information to be able to pass in any other class
The class is full of nonesense. I attended every classes and prepared every chapter. So I felt I was successful at this class but no. You will still get very poor grade. I don't even know what is her standard or criteria. Very subjective and awkward. No feedback and no adequate guide for the test.
This professor will discourage you. If only few students failed, then it is their problem. However, if most of students failed, then the professor is the problem. The quizzes are based on ridiculous and ambiguous questions. Well, that could be easy to some, but mostly No. She has very weird & specific taste requiring answers.
The way she grades our answers and her questions. Apparently are just not adequate for her enough to Give a good mark when in reality should be.
Actually the worst. I have no idea why this prof is still employed. 90% of the class fails tests. That is a reflection of the prof, not the students. Not only is the grading scheme problematic, but Dr park includes racist vocabulary in her lectures and shames students BY NAME for taking issue with it. Shame on you, Dr Park.
Omg where do I start with this prof, her lectures are super long and lowkey confusing, she does this thing where she gives everyone a quiz at the beginning of every lecture on the reading and after Soyang will basically tell you how you didn't get 100% unless you wrote down specifically what she wants. Really weird way to teach A Hi. Don't recommen
Boring, long lectures, confusing reading material, gives almost no feedback and criticizes you. I have A's in all my other classes and even after doing the work, studying and showing up to class, I still almost failed. Not using exact words in quizzes = a fail. Very hard grader, you can go from 80 to 50% quick. Assignment dates are disorganized.
it's no exaggeration - avoid this prof at all costs -weekly quizzes don't reflect learning retention but memorization (15+ pg readings) -not a tough grader if you defend your answers (even wrong ones), which shouldn't be allowed in uni -you WILL fall behind(she falls behind not finishing lectures, 80% of class time is spent on last week's lecture)
Unless you are consistently getting
Park knocked it out of the park. Quality classes!
Terrible. Would never recommend. Amongst the worst experiences I have had. She should not be teaching at OCAD in any capacity.
Take all classes with this professor. Learning abundance.
She will only give you a good grade if you answer the way she wants you to ; she is always right no matter what. She has very outdated old school teaching methods and loves to embarrass students if they get something wrong rather than correcting them respectfully. Very uncomfortable/negativity learning environment to be in. DO BETTER OCAD.
The professor cannot teach at all, will give very heavy readings to read at home, and quiz you on it before the lecture. Very narcissistic and would spend more than half of her lectures yapping away about nothing. Don't consider this class if you want a decent grade or some sanity cause you're not getting either of those when you take her class.
In all honesty, I find it quite upsetting that she's not taking the time to improve her teaching style and hearing the constructive criticism from former students. Save your sanity and mental health and avoid this prof.
The real problem is that as I read all of these very specific negative reviews that spans many years is that OCADU cares so little about its students and will not help this instructor do a better job. What kind of university disrespects its students like this? Why is nothing done? Help this instructor. Help students. OCADU gets the F here. Shame!
There will be a 10-min weekly quiz on the required readings and three exams focused on lecture material. This course is for those ready to be challenged. Professor Soyang can be easily distracted, making it hard to follow lectures. To achieve high grades, stay focused in class (important), take notes, and review recorded lectures to fill any gaps.
A family member passed away and she didn't even care to understand that I needed some days off to grieve. Lectures are boring as she always talks about anything other than the lecture.
I am not a student that does well on tests or exams but I will say for the format of her class, she runs it well. criteria is made clear from day one and she explains how her exams will be laid out clearly. If you are ready to put in the work, you will love this prof. If not, you will likely not succeed.
I was warned Dr. Park would be harsh with grading and course load. I think these reviews are a bit dramatic though. I think a lot of ppl who take the class are in studio courses and aren't used to university level essays. I'm an art history major and tbh I didn't find her exams/essays hard at all-- just put effort! She gives great feedback as well
This lady gives you a test before you are even taught the material. She has zero respect towards her students and is not considerate of their personal time. She fails to create a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. She just walks all over her students giving grades that are not deserved despite the effort students make
..........
Spicy meatball
Hands out participation marks in a lecture of 200 like a narcissist feeding pigeons. Pop quiz before lecture. Must hand write papers. When she said Gauguin was good (he was a pedophile with syphilis) I left. Art History with Travis Lee Clark on Youtube (From the Renaissance Playlist) should educate you on Modern Art if you dont need requirement.
