no textbook, friendly guy, pretty good teacher. go to class and do the study guides and you should get an a.
Very enthusiastic, funny, really into the material, but the tests are very, very hard
He is charismatic and friendly, but his exams are difficult and often not what was heavily discussed in class.
Teaching a new class and has absolutely no idea what to do. Nothing on tests is relevant to what is discussed in class.
Kooky professor. Likes to talk about his kids and how he's a "scientist". Makes students take lots of notes and draw graphs, which can often get really messy. Test are very hard, but there is always a large curve to make up for it.
Goes off topic a lot, does not follow the book (no point in buying book or E-book) discusses what he currently studies as an ecologist which is not what we should be learning in L111. Difficult tests.
He does not teach the material well at all to students, he teaches it according to how it "clicked" for him. The tests do not cover the majority of what was learned and are very poorly written.
He makes you write and observe graphs, which literally confuse you more and make no sense. He goes way off topic and constantly talks about kids and his studies which are no where near what he needs to talk about. The tests are hard. He makes no sense in class. There is no structure and you have no idea what to even study for tests.
Material is difficult but he has a pretty easy teaching style. Go to class and you will probably get an A.
He is a cool guy, but the tests are unreasonably difficult for a introduction course. People are already screwed for med school because of their first biology course. I understand that he is trying to prepare us for the future, but we have to start out small. Not a full blown fail-out-of-biology first semester.
This class was very hard. His tests are terrible, even if you spend hours studying because the way it's worded. This was the only class i have ever gotten a B in. He doesn't explain concepts well, and is very hard to get help from. If you ask a question he just asks you it right back; that is so frustrating. Let's just say, I'm not a fan of his
Super confusing, and makes you do the most. Section worksheets are like 6 pages long, exams are ridiculously hard. He tries to trick you (lots of none of thee above all of the above questions). He is enthused about material, but a 100 level course should never be this difficult. Not helpful, rather condescending. Answers questions with questions
Hard exams that are meant to trick you. discussion worksheets are long and difficult. Not very clear on material and he like to answer your questions with a question. My advice, don't take his class
SUCH A GREAT PROFESSOR! You can really tell he cares for his class and spends a lot of time with his notes and the material. You have to work hard and his tests are difficult but if you really study an a is possible. Highly recommend him. He's funny, and makes class really interesting.
Although he is very enthusiastic about his work, he is probably one of the most confusing professors I've ever had. Extreme amount of graphs (SUPER messy), extremely difficult exams, too much homework, TOO MANY EMAILS and unprepared AIs. The entire course I spent worrying; I ended up not studying and wound up doing better. It's THAT kind of class.
In my entire experience at IU, I have never been more frustrated with a professor. He is a little all over the place with his material, Exams are pretty much impossible to pass, and the discussion requires so much work it should count for 3 credit hours alone. He can be rude at times. Take a different professor.
If you expect to be spoon-fed just like in high school and to get an A without any effort, this is not for you. But if you show maturity and do your part, you'll get an A and learn a lot from this class. Spencer is a great instructor. He makes you use your brain (are you willing to do so?)... and if you struggle, he'll help you.
Very hard for a 100 level course. You have to work for every point you get. Lecture is boring, and the test are very hard due to confusing wording. Work sheet are 8 pages long and there is graded questions due before every lecture. I would not recommend this class or this professor.
The tests are very hard. Tests are based heavily off lectures and discussion assignments, so studying these will be your best chance. He has plenty of office hours and review sessions before exams so getting help shouldn't be a problem if you need it. He is very smart and has trouble relating to kids who don't understand material.
I went into this class nervous because of comments I had read on this site but Spencer ended up being my favorite teacher I've ever had. That being said, this is not a class you can just get by in. You need to do all of the work you are given and actually pay attention in class. If you are passionate about the material this class is for you.
My first test I got a 48%. But he truly made realize what actually learning the material is. At the end of the year he became my favorite professor ever. I didn't realize how much I had actually learned in the class. And when he saw me improving very quickly he sent me a personalized email. That really made me have respect for him.
Very boring class in general. Some of the content was interesting, but most was very boring. Most of the weekly discussion assignments are very difficult, especially for those who have discussion on Monday. In general, the tests were pretty difficult. A harder 100 level bio class.
Spencer was an amazing professor and really helpful as long as you were the one reaching out to him. In a large lecture is hard to follow and if you arent on top of things you wont have an easy time in this class. Tests are hard but doing the discussion problems help a lot.
Having Spencer as a prof was definitely an eye opener. Coming in from high school, I realized after the first two tests that I could no longer glide through like I used to. Not the kind of class you can study for in an hour. It takes tons of time looking through the material, and actually UNDERSTANDING it. And discussion is hard so be ready.
While his tests can be hard his lectures are really interesting. If you go to class and do the homework you'll be fine. He is definitely willing to help if you ask for it. He was my favorite teacher my freshman year.
Spencer was a real eye opener for me coming out of high school. I realized after the first test I actually had to study multiple hours every so often WEEKS before the exam to understand the material and to actually get a decent grade. He wants his students to succeed but he will not give anybody a grade to help at all. You have to earn it.
The tests are very confusing, even if you know the material its hard due to the way he words questions. You have no idea what to study for the tests. I just stopped trying to study. Discussion is a nightmare, they are like 8 page packets that you have to do a ton of reading for. He just makes the course much more difficult than it should be.
Spencer Hall is a fantastic Foundations of Biology teacher. He really lays down the foundations to give you a good platform of knowledge to then be successful in many other Science, Math and even Economic classes. He helps open your eyes to the "big picture" and he is excellent at synthesizing everything you learn.
Overall, Spencer is a nice guy. My main complaint would be how confusing the test questions are. I go in feeling solid about the material and leave wondering if I had even learned anything. Discussion was a lot of work due to problem set assignments. Constant worry about different things being due. A lot of math and graphs used as well.
Difficult class for a Freshman entering college but left with a better understanding of how to improve as a student. He was fair and did about as much as he could to help you succeed.
Bio-L 111 with Spencer is a very demanding class as far as Freshman classes go. Prepare to spend a lot of time on this class to ensure a good grade. Though its a lot of work you will leave feeling like you understand the fundamentals of Bio. He does everything he can to help prepare you for the tests (discussions, Podcasts, study sessions etc.)
Spencer is an amazing professor! He is super animated engaging during lectures. While I do agree his tests are difficult and there is a lot of homework, he does just about everything he can do to help you out. Extra credit problems on tests, turning exam Qs into extra credit, review sessions, huge office hours, surveys asking your opinions, etc.
You have to go into this class with a basic understanding of the material or else you will not do well. He doesnt teach, he goes over material like you already know it. If you dont understand, he makes you feel stupid. This guy made me cry.
Avoid him at all costs. This class is WAY too much work for a 100 level class, but I didn't think that would be an issue if I actually put the work in. However, putting effort into this class does NOT translate into your grade. This is because everything is meant to trick you. You could study and try to do everything right and still get a B.
Spencer is great, his test formatting is poor however. I enjoyed his course, and was immersed in the material. He is available often. However if you do not attend class and play telephone with the notes, you probably won't do well. The test are similar to his discussion work, but his wording and selection choices are maniacal; may cause discomfort.
Spencer is by far my favorite professor. His tests are hard, but if you study you can do very good on them. His lectures are entertaining and he really is a great teacher. He makes you work for your grade because he expects his students to learn and grow from his course.
As a person he is entertaining, he relates biology to things everyone can understand, and seems to care a lot. But He literally talks about checking this site all the time, and it makes people uncomfortable. The way he worded things was confusing, and this L111 takes much ore work than others, but he really does prepare you if you are a bio major!
Professor can not be bothered to stay on topic for more than 5 minutes. Professor constantly pressures own political and personal views onto students. Professor likely spends 5 minutes preparing each lecture as his powerpoints are full of errors. Does poor job of explaining complex concepts. One saving grace of having plenty of study material.
He is a great guy, is very passionate about biology, and really want's his students to succeed. Unfortunately, I would definitely not recommend this class. Discussion papers took 4-5 hours every week, and the tests were extremely challenging. Other people in bio would look at my hw and be shocked by the difficulty of material we were learning.
I think Spencer gets way too much flack purely because lots of people see 100 level classes as ones that are supposed to no work at all. While I do agree this class does surpass the expectations of a 100 level class in many ways, if you work for an A it is achievable. Spencer makes himself very available. His lectures are super fun.
His lectures were very engaging. If you like GOT and Star Wars, he'll occasionally work those into lectures. He often gives quizzes in class, which are just to see if you're there. Don't skip lectures, you'll need to know the info for discussion worksheets. He's very helpful at office hours and is funny.
Spencer was a really passionate prof. He cared about the stuff he taught, so it automatically made the class engaging. Also, he moved around during lecture, which was more engaging. He's helpful during office hours. Basically, if you care about your grade you'll do fine. An added bonus is he adds Game of Thrones references sometimes.
This is the usually the first time freshman have to do any work in a class and are often caught off guard. Go to class, go to office hours if you're confused, and you'll do fine
Spencer Hall was a great professor. He gives supporting homework that helps with tests. He is very personable. If you do the work you will be fine. I was a little worried about this class because I am focused on cell biology and DNA, but he made ecology and evolution very interesting. Definitely go to office hours!
I took this class as a junior for an extra bio credit, thinking that after taking advanced bio classes, an intro class would be a nice refresher. I can honestly say I've never had a professor do such a poor job of running a class. Yes it is work heavy, but the problem is that the work doesn't help you learn the material at all. Avoid at all costs.
People writing these bad reviews are students who are too LAZY to study. Spencer is an amazing person who cares so much about his students and is willing to help. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Don't expect to fly through this class, but put the work in and it will pay off. The material is not difficult, you just have to be willing to actually study.
Spencer is a great individual! He is passionate about his students success. That being said: he is a lecture heavy teacher, has many many many papers, especially for discussion, and I would recommend never skipping his class! He has random note card quizzes to see who's attending and has frequent canvas reading quizzes online!
Spencer was a really great prof, but dont expect a cakewalk. You have to work for it and put the studying in, but he gives you the preparation needed for sure.
I highly recommend Spencer for BIOL-L 111. Every week there is a discussion assignment, which can be lengthy and tough but they aren't always too bad. In addition to the discussion assignment, there is some reading but it isn't over the top. There are 4 exams, with the lowest dropped, plus a final exam. Spencer is very motivated and dedicated.
L111 is typically a freshman class, which is why I feel Spencer has a lower rating. A lot of students do not come in knowing how to study and prepare for college. Spencer is the right instructor to break high school habits. Work hard, attend lecture and study, this is what leads to an A. He is brilliant and passionate about Bio. Would take again!!
He was seriously the best. He made notes for you that followed along his helpful, detailed powerpoint that you could fill out during class. As long as you review all material you've received from him before a test you'll do fine b/c the homework he gives you certainly prepares you to do well. His questions do try and trick you, just take you time.
He is a great professor. He offers Q & A each night before we take a test. All his tests are multiple choice and two extra credit questions are at the end. The test can be difficult because of the way he words the questions sometimes. Discussion packets are great study tools to prepare for tests. You want to come to every class!!
I was thrilled to see Prof. Hall had positive reviews on her. However, my experience was much different. His lectures were all over the place constantly, and his exams were intentionally worded to mess you up. The homework assignments took me 5 hours each week, and in all, this class led me to have immense stress I have never felt.
Spencer is very energetic and very knowledgeable in what he teaches. However, he does ramble a lot in lectures which can be confusing. The class is very work heavy and you need to make sure that you understand all of the work he gives you. He does not give study guides for exams nor does he round grades.
Dr. Hall was a great professor. He clearly does a lot of outside work for the class because the note templates, slides and worksheets are all well made. Though, the homework is a little heavy for how easy the class is. But if you do all the work and pay attention in class you won't need to study for any of the tests and will pass easily.
This class requires a lot more work than a typical 100 level class and at times can be super difficult, but it was so worth it. He creates a solid foundation that will help you excel in your upper-level courses. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about the topics covered in class. I wish I could take his class again!
Tests are absolutely awful.
Spencer is an amazing professor, super knowledgeable interested in you succeeding. However he purposefully challenges you by: wording questions in a difficult manner, long discussions (mini packets of 10-24 questions), and hard exams. Even though I loved his energy and his passion I wouldnt retake his class too hard. Seriously tho, great guy!!
Spencer is great. He puts in a lot of work to make sure the class has everything they need to be successful. The class is a big time commitment, with multiple assignments due each week, and problem sets due every weekend. It will seem like a lot of work, but youll be glad you took the course in the end.
Not great
He is an amazing professor. However, he will definitely make you work for it. Not only does he teach you the material, but he teaches you how to think. You will also learn other helpful skills from this class. Such as how to use excel, how to read graphs, and some stats calculations. Overall, a great class. Hard work pays off in this class.
Spencer is a great professor who genuinely cares about the success of his students. I passed the class with 103% because he offers tons of extra credit. This class did require a lot of time to complete 1-2 quizzes and discussion packets weekly on top of watching pre-lectures before live lecture, but the busy work left me well-prepared for exams.
It's always hard to rate a prof harshly, however, I hope that what I have to say is constructive. Professor Hall was clearly very enthusiastic about his class, but barely ever was able to verbally explain more complex/nuanced topics. Ideas that are relatively simple are made so convoluted that it makes things even more confusing.
Professor Hall made me question my capabilities as a student and as a person. I've never been made to feel more inadequate. I'm a biology major, and have gotten consistent A's in every other biology class here. However, the difficulty of the exams in this class is ridiculous and the lectures are 90% filler, & 10% poorly explained material :(
I’ve gotten A’s in all of my biology classes, bio major here, but this class is ridiculous. VERY oftentimes rambles. You have to study VERYY HARD in order to do good with his exams. Doesn’t include drops till week 12. His exams are super confusing and wordy on purpose, he *literally* says that. For the love of god, don’t take his class!!!
What can I say in this short response box? I took AP Bio in high school and came into class with a large understanding of biology. His homework and test questions are worded very confusing and makes it hard to understand what he's asking. His lectures are all over the place and hard to follow. Bottom line, don't take him if you can avoid it.
If you do the work and pay attention in class, you'll be fine. His lectures can be a bit confusing and hard to follow and also his tests and quizzes have questions that are confusing which can get annoying. However, he gives you three levels of practice on almost every topic, has tons of office hours, and always has q&a sessions before exams.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE SPENCER for L111. He rambles during lectures, the homework assignments often have to do with stuff you learn on the day they were do. He words things so confusingly that it sets you up for failure. He's also unaccessible outside of class. He's a very harsh grader and it is nearly impossible to get a good grade.
Spencer is by far one of the worst professors here. He gives little to no help and gives so many worksheets. It's like high school. If you miss one lecture, you're done for.
If you want to take a very difficult class with content that you learned in AP Bio but be very confused at how it's taught, then by all means take this class. You work harder than you have to for most classes and still don't get your desired grade. If your options are to only have Spencer as your lecturer, then take the class at Ivy Tech.
The lectures for this class were so poorly paced (some classes were virtually content-void, while others were speeding through complex material) and the exams so disproportionately difficult that I'd never recommend this class. PRE-MED STUDENTS: do not take this class! It covers little/no MCAT materials & will likely tank your GPA.
This professor is so strange. Not in a good way. He often messes up on slides, papers, quizzes and does not correct them. He also complicates very simple ideas and concepts. The way he grades is so redundant. He does not word questions clearly?often have to clarify what he means. Bad class, take any other class then this one.
The class is 4 credits, so it is to be expected that it is a lot of work. I went to every lecture and did every discussion, which he structures, so you do not really have to do much studying for the exams. I found this class to be relatively easy if you just actively participate. There isn't much outside research you will have to do. I recommend.
Spencer didn't answer questions clearly in class and the way he worded HW/exam questions sometimes made no sense. You need to study a lot for this class and attend all of the lectures. It's not an easy intro bio class, but if you do your HW and actually try to learn the material, it's not bad. The tests are curved and he gives many drops on work.
this professor caused me insane amounts of stress. the discussions took around 3 hours and were quite confusing. the test questions were worded confusing and even if you studied for awhile they still wouldn't go well. if you missed class once you are so behind. I do not recommend this professor. it's almost impossible to get a good grade.
I am about to be done with this class, and while I am doing well, I could not be more excited to be done with Spencers teaching. His class is far too difficult for a 100 level, and his questions are paragraphs long worded so confusingly. If you are foolish enough like me to forget to submit your AP Bio score and skip the class, good luck.
He can be nice, BUT the discussion sheets took way too long, quizzes are due after every class, and his exams were far too difficult. On the eams, he tries to trick students with the question wording. They're all MC with "select all" and "none of the above." Can't use process of elimination on any question, and they're all about a paragraph long.
He is a very enthusiastic professor and goes over very helpful notes with an energy that I really appreciated. His lectures have accompanying notes sheets that will help you all retain and collect the info. It's defiantly not the easiest intro bio class, but if you come to lecture and take advantage of resources it's far from impossible.
Bro what an odd fellow... he's just odd.He needs more AIs and office hours, it is hard to find a time that works and he also puts too much work on them. If you're reading this and must take his class- DO NOT SLACK ON THE DISCUSSION PACKETS!!! get hem done AHEAD of time and see an AI! However, I can tell he really likes his job and is passionate.
If you can avoid taking this class with this professor, do it. It is not worth the time and energy. I spent way too much time out of my weeks on this class and in the end, the time I put into this class didn't even matter. He gave us so much work and not enough time to do it. TA's were the only reason I passed.
Exams were all multiple choice which sounds good in theory but Spencer loves to add none of the above or the potential of multiple being true for all exam questions. The class was way too hard for a 100 level, he always compares how it will help with upper-level classes but as someone who has taken many, this class was too much work and not needed.
He was ok. The content was hard and not taught in the best way. Discussions took forever to do. Exams were difficult.
I would not take this class by Spencer. The final is worth 25% of the grade, and exams are incredibly difficult. The discussion packet would take hours every week and the exams were so poorly written and difficult to understand. Trying to decipher what the problem was asking was so much more difficult than the actual material.
So happy this class is over. He seems to make everything SO much more complicated than it needs to be. When you really study the material you find its not that difficult its just the way he lectures and the work he assigns. The exams are way to hard for a 100 level class, the final absolutely destroyed my grade. He's just doing too much.
Professor Hall is caring, enthusiastic, well-organized, and an amazing lecturer. Hall provides several resources and opportunities for student success. However, many of those resources are mandatory, leading to a heavy homework load each week. If you attend lecture and complete required assignments, you will do great and become knowledgeable!
Spencer was nice and knowledgeable, but his class was literally a nightmare. The concepts were not difficult, but he wasn't very good at explaining them and the exams were genuinely awful. They were multiple choice, but every question could have one answer, more than one, or it could be none of the above/all of the above. Would not recommend.
literally awful. take bio with literally anyone else.
I can see how a lot of people didn't like this professor. This definitely isn't an easy/blow off class. He is a strong believer in putting time and effort into the class. He definitely cares about his students and puts time and effort into the course. Do review sessions, do discussion worksheets, and ask questions, you'll do great in the course.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!! He will ruin your GPA. I have never put more time into any other science class and got the worst grade I have ever gotten in my entire college career. I think I would rather drop out of IU than take a class with him as my professor again. Everyone in the class was fighting for their lives.
