I took both Astronomy and Physics with Mr. Martin. He is a great teacher with a sense of humor. Both classes were well taught and exciting. Great labs.
Avoid him.His notes were terrible. He does easy examples in class and on the test they are nothing like the examples, ver hard. He never goes to his office hours. He is condescending to his students and openly makes fun of them or tells them to shut-up.
This guy is a bit rude. His tests are directly from the study guy. He is really into himself.
He is realy hard!!!! Tons of projects and homework...avoid him if you can!
He's a great teacher with a lot of knowledge. You can tell he loves physics and astronomy. Astronomy was not hard at all and I pity the person who thinks it was. Very interesting.
Professor Martin is a great teacher. He doesn't like slackers and always wants you to do your best. He's very helpful and very nice- a little sarcastic but funny. Take him if you want to work and learn.
Great professor! Take him if you want to do some major learning!!!!
Very interesting class. Prof is very organized and clear on expectations. I learned a great deal in his class. There's a bit of work involved but it was worth it.
Would not recommend this Professor. He reads directly off of his notes that have not been updated in 15 years and wants you to make corrections as you go thru. Test questions are confusing and the man reminds be of a retarded Dr. Evil. AVOID HIM
Hard class, but he made it enjoyable. Hard tests, lecture and notes were 40years old and hot helpfull. But he knows what to expect. Lots of easier labs, and quizzes. Great teacher overall.
Hes a good teacher, the tests are kind of hard, but he takes the time to help you. Tricky with his tests, u get examples never seen before, other then that he makes the class as easy as possible to understand.
Negative, critical teaching style. Insulting comments in class. Don't consider if you are not adept at science. Massive studying, objectives, reading, confusing and tricky test questions and labs. Prepare to be insulted every class - after the class you can drop and still receive a refund.
I thought this class was easy, i never got the book, just the notes and lab packets. his lectures are insightful, however they can become boring. if your not good at mental math dont take this class. he is not a big fan or calculators.
The class is slightly hard if you are not good with math and or thinking on your feet. He does have old notes but the point is for you to learn about astronomy in general. The notes help a great deal because he gives you the objectives (basically telling you what to look for when you study) over all he is one of the best professors I have ever had
Mr. Martin is boring and out of touch with today's students. If you take this class, you will unfortunately find out yourself. This man should seriously consider retirement. Made a somewhat easy subject ( Astronomy ) harder than what it should be.
whatever you do, do NOT take this professor. I ended up dropping the class b/c I was struggling so bad. He is very difficult and expects everything out of you. Requires hours and hours of studying. Lab write ups are unbelievable. Takes off 3pts for every wrong place value. This pro. is out of touch with todays students and needs to retire soon.
He is very fun and very well informed. He is also very well organized and explains things thoroughly. I got a VERY easy A. The class might be hard, if ANYTHING, but he is a good teacher. Take him. NOT SYED HUSSEIN!!!
I thought that Mr. Martin was a wonderful teacher. Sure he has some bland jokes, but he tries. He does expect alot, but come on, you aren't in high school anymore. He gives you a study sheet for the tests that are almost identical to the test, just different numbers, so there are no surprises.
Mr. Martin was probably the coolest teacher Ive had in college...he was kind of confusing at times but very helpful if u needed the help...
Listen to me please, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY, if you want to fail take him. He is extremely difficult, even though the class was in astronomy, it was like harvard phd physics, so so so so much work and he has no mercy, I had a teacher who teaches in OCC and she barely got a B- . Avoid him, in my class only about 2-3 people got a B which was probably t
He actually maintained my interest in physics. His astronomy class is difficult but if you take the class thinking that you're just going to look at pretty stars then you should go back to high school. I highly recommend him!
Mr. Martin was a good professor.. his tests are a bit difficult but the work isn't hard and he is always willing to help. YOUR IN COLLEGE NOW not all classes are going to be a piece of cake, and they shouldn't. It's a good and interesting a class. It's 1,000 times better then the alternative here..Victoria Person (don't take her you'll be sorry)
DONT TAKE HIM!!!! he sucks as a teacher. occ isnt freakin' yale. he's really hard and he's just awful gives u too much stupid work for astronomy trust me dont take him! worst class ever!!!!
This class is a lot of work, and some of it is hard. Martin is nice has a sense of humor & will help if you ask. There are MANY extra credit opportunities. It is possible to get an A if you want it bad enough and you study appropriately! Martin was a great teacher and I would take another class from him! The subject is difficult not the teacher!
I took Prof. Martin for both Physics and Astronomy. He is absolutley the best professor I have ever had. Professional, FAIR, knowledgable, humorous, intelligent. He rocks! Don't be put off by his dry sense of humor.
He was the absolute worst Prof. i have ever had..Way to much work and the objectives he hands out are not the ones he uses on the test. If you wanna work hard and fail miserably he is right for you. In my opinon he should just retire, it's in his best intrest!
I had professor Martin for both physics classes and astronomy. His classes are very straight forward and if you do the work you should have no problem passing the class. It does take a work and time to pass his class with an A but thats the way college classes should be. You get out what you put in. He is a great teacher and fair one as well.
One of the worst professors I've ever had--and I have multiple degrees! He spends class time talking off topic, uses the same notes from at least 20 yrs ago, makes fun of previous students in class, doesn't allow use of calculator for exams, did not explain physics concepts well--the list can go on and on.
Coolest teacher ever. If you can't do 5th grade math then you probably shouldn't take this class. If you need a calculator for everything, well ... go back to grade school and THEN come to college. Form study groups, practice your math, and this class will help you in more ways than you will ever know! Mr. Martin rules!
Probably the best teacher I have had in my entire life! seriously, he always kept me interesting, has all the notes written for you and sticks to it. Really interesting and down to Earth. He actually made it fun. the no calculator thing has payed off so many times and I use the stuff I learned from his class in so many other classes
Examples are given very quickly, and as if you have already had physics. Concepts are not explained well enough to prepare you for critical thinking that you will need for exams. Labs are fair, but the class's core content isn't taught well or supported by text (teacher doesn't even like the text book). Explore other choices.
mr martin is a very good teacher. he will help you if you are struggling in his class. I was scared on the 1st day but he made it comfortable to be in his class. He is a must take instructor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Physics isn't an easy class. If you don't work you won't do well no matter who you take. Having had a couple different teachers, I honestly have to say I have had better and more enjoyable experiences with other instructors. Check out all options. It's amazing the difference.
Don't take, save yourself the grief. He gives you sample problems which are supposed to mirror your tests, but it is very convoluted. Unless this is your only class forget it, at least with him. Studied my butt off and barely made it work. Was a 3.8 student in both grad and undergrad, got a C in his class and prayed to get that.
DO NOT TAKE. seriously if you have any OTHER classes besides this (full time students listen up) AVOID him. work your butt of for a B. A is basically impossible. i got a C, and worked too hard for it.
Whatever you do avoid this teacher! When you ask him for help he does not give it to you and his tests are extremely hard! I was a 'B' student and barely passed the class! But if you like a challenge and really want a BIG challenge go ahead and take the class if you wish!
Mr. Martin was awesome! The first day he was a little scary but if you go to class and take notes then you'll do fine! Hi tests were based completely off the notes! He goes over all the answers to the notes before the test. I had him for Astronomy and was really nervous but I got a B+. He's really nice if your respectful to him. Learn a lot!
Based on prior ratings, I was scared to take Mr. Martin. Don't be! Physics is hard but he is very fair and a really nice guy. He is more than willing to help but you have to go to him, he won't baby you. Worked hard for a B, sut that's life. If I can do it, anyone can.
He is probably the most amazing Prof I've ever had! He was so helpful with students and was truly interested in helping students understand the subject.
As a former English Major, I was terrified of Physics. This class has made me feel great. It's a College Science course, so if you're not strong in that area, expect to study a lot for a good grade. His sample tests and example problems are very useful. Being confident in actual math, not calculators helps. Also, prepare for WW2 history :)
Overall nice guy. Not a huge fan of his teaching method or test format. If you apply yourself, you'll do fine. If you slack, you will fail. Not that hard to comprehend. Just put in some effort into it, even when it gets boring, and you'll have a painless semester. He's not the Dr. Evil some reviewers are portraying him to be.
This is my 3rd semester with Mr. Martin. He has been teaching at OCC for a very long time and is quite knowledgable. I would reccomend him to anyone. If you are looking for any blow off classes don't turn to Mr. Martin.
It was definitely a very difficult class but he kept it interesting. His examples and stories were actually entertaining. I was extremely worried about the 'No Calculator' tests (2 of the 5) but the numbers come out so perfectly that those tests were actually easier. He's definitely not for everybody but I really enjoyed his class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! I graduated with a Bachelor of Science (g.p.a. 3.4) and decided to return to school. Intro to Physics was a requirement and Mr. Martin was the professor. I was very optimistic going into the class, even after reading all the bad reviews on him. Boy was I DEAD WRONG... He is very smart..which leads me to say this... He is far
Interesting subject but hard professor. Hes been teaching this subject since the 70s so he knows his stuff. No need to buy book but you need to buy outline packets and follow those in class. If you want to pass go over his objectives and pay attention. If you slack you will fail, he doesnt mess around.
Helps to know before taking class:how to run spell-check,significant figures, percent error. Quizzes sometimes from homework questions. MUST know which equation to apply (major penalty).Generous about other mistakes, yet ppl with more math background fare better. Practice so memory is not an issue freeing you to concentrate on analyzing problems.
I thought I would love to take this class but boy was I wrong. If I could re-take this class I would have taken it with a different teacher. Mr. Martin is very rude and doesn't want to help you. Is very boring and you have to buy his notes don't buy the book.
This is not an easy class. Do not take it if your looking for a class just to fill credit hours. Mr. Martin is very smart and knows his stuff but he does not tolerate students who slack off. He has high expectations of all of his students. Buy his notes but the book is not necessary.
Prof. Martin is great-clear & almost always takes you from A to B w/out skipping steps. It's a tough course & his class is the easiest Physics will ever get. His notes include worked out examples... really helpful in getting me past the places I got stuck. You won't do well if you don't do the homework and then some. Ask & keep asking questions.
Nice guy. Fascinating class. But way too much information to comprehend in too little time.
Do all available extra credit. Turn in all labs and cram the night before the test. You'll do great! He shows a film of himself to review before the exam. Take notes on that and his study guide. Good to go!
I love this class. He is very helpful I went to him quite a few times with problems and he was always willing to take the time to answer me. He is a great instructor I would take his classes again
Prof. Martin did an excellent job overall. He also made an entire semester of Phy II available on video in the library. If you watch them before the class, it should give you a good idea of what to expect and will go a long way in helping you succeed in the course. He's a pretty lenient grader but you still need to know the material & do the work.
Do not take this course in the Summer, you will regret it. It is a hard course but if you follow the objectives he gives you and actually study them and understand them you will do fine. If you are looking to take this course just to fulfill a science credit, I would re-think that decision because it is not easy.
Very difficult class. I did not enjoy what should have been a fun class. Astronomy class was much more Challenging than an intro class should be
This is an exceptionally great class if you're willing to learn and work at it! Instructor is very structured and difficult but always willing to explain so ask questions. Always available for office hours. Not a blow off class...need to be there to understand material. Cost of materials for the class is low, no book required!
Loved Mr. Martin
DO NOT TAKE HIM! this class was so hard and stressful! he doesn't always let you use a calculator which makes the tests really hard and he has different ratings of the test. sometimes is an easy test with calculators and others its a hard test with no calculators.
Mr. Martin is ALWAYS willing to make himself available should you request help. Not an "easy" class but if you do the labs (two of which are merely field trips), take notes during the review sessions and read the required short stories you'll do fine. You can re-take any test you flunk, plus there's plenty of extra credit available.
Love Him! He is kind of old school but he knows what he is talking about. Objectives lay out everything you need to know and always answered all my questions. He is also very funny. If you study and pay attention you'll be fine, it's no easy A. I highly recommend.
Do not take him! He makes everything way more difficult than it needs to be. His tests are stressful because sometimes he gives you a bunch of the same type of problems in your notes, but then gives you something completely different or something you barely covered on the test. If you do take him, read the notes well. He's very condescending.
Took physics w/martin. LOVED HIM! physics is not an easy class, i find a lot of comments are from whiny ppl who dont take the time to put work into their education. He seems grumpy or annoyed by questions, but he was always there to help and see that you succeed. Would have loved to take his astronomy class.
A great teacher.
I've never studied for a class like this one. Be prepare to study 20 hrs a week. This class is too boring and painful.
Professor Martin has a very structured class that teaches you physics from the basics. It is not easy. You'll have to work really hard if you're not familiar with the concepts. I think Martin has put a lot of thought into this class and I was really happy when I did well. It requires critical thinking so you can't just show up and get an A.
He is a nice professor. If you study good you will get an A. His class is very boring but if you study good you will get an A.
Do not take this professor, he over-complicates a class for non-science majors and he adds questions to the test that were not on his "objectives" sheet.
Im in Mr.Spencers class now, definitely not a blowoff class so do not take him for that reason. just pay attention and study for his tests, the class isn't impossible its just not an easy as most the classes at OCC. He's not a mean guy or anything, the class is just kinda boring, just take care of your stuff and do all the work and you"ll pass.
Mr. M is worth taking because you will learn how to study if you do not know already. it is very very possible to earn an A is astronomy. It just requires effort like any other college level science course. Plus, extra credit is offered ALOT.
Hard class, good teacher. If you're willing to study then this is the class for you. Martin is helpful without actually giving direct answers, making you actually learn the material. Would recommend.
Professor Martin is the Professor I would love to have in all my classes. Ask for extra credit readings and you will do fine in class.I learned a lot and met a great teacher who cares about the subject and his students. Do all the experiments and see the tutor and a good grade is yours. If you are lazy, pick another class !
Professor Martin is the kind of Professor I would like to have in all my classes. Clear instructions and expectations, he has a love for the subject and he cares about his students. He likes to educate and sures creative ways to get difficult concepts across. Do not be afraid if you are not a Math person.
Stories galore this dude loves to tell stories especially ones about WWII. Good teacher refined class he''s been teaching the same material in the same room since like 1979 so he knows how to teach it. Pay attention show up and you''ll be good to go. Some tests you won''t be able to use a calculator usually calculations are easy enough.
No textbook required but you should show up for class and buy the note packet required. Fairly simple class easy teacher as long as you get what he''s talking about. Get a good lab partner preferably someone that won''t drop the class 3 weeks in. Willing to help if you ask for the help.
You arent allowed calculators on most test, which you have to divide by fractions, square roots of decimals. Labs are really confusing and hard to follow, plus lab reports take hours and they are weekly. Goes over material really fast, and doesnt always do example problems for each concept. Hardest class Ive ever taken, take a different teacher.
it is simple .when you take a class you are expected to learn the subject matter... this is not that hard of a class IF you expend the effort to ACTUALLY learn... I wish that there was an astronomy II class to learn even more. when you are doing the objectives, use the web to get another perspective, helps with retention
You will be bored in this class. He reads directly from the notes (which he gives you, so you don't have to buy the book) in a somewhat monotone voice. However, you will learn. Read the notes, study, and do the experiments and you'll be fine. He gives a TON of extra credit; there is no reason you shouldn't get an A in this class!.
Professor Martin is clear about what will be on the test and what you need to study (he gives you his class notes which are helpful). DO THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS. He likes quizzes, but if you take even 30min to do the HW you should be fine. He tells a lot of stories, but they're a nice breather & help wapplying concepts.
the worst professor I ever took 85% of the time he talked about what he did with physics in his personal life "DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!"
He is a good professor but you for sure have to put in the work and time to do well in the class. For sure make sure to do well on labs and pop quizzes to help your grade if you're not doing so hot on tests.
Great professor, great class, easy to talk to, but if you don't study or attend class, you may fall behind.
You absolutely have to put in the work to get that A, but in the process you'll really learn your physics. He's been teaching the same class in the same room for decades, but that's not a bad thing. He has the schedule nailed down and it works. He's a little intimidating at first, but he's really a nice guy who wants to see his students succeed.
I misjudged Mr. Martin at the start of the semester because of his low, monotone voice and demeanor. In reality he turned out to be a nice guy who is a clear, straightforward lecturer who is there to help and a fair grader. His notes, HW problems and practice tests are sufficient to succeed, but you must put in the effort to get the grade you want.
He is simply the best professor I've ever had! Sure physics is hard, and he does not always let you use the calculator, but Martin makes everything more clear and he clearly loves what he's doing. He is passionate about physics and will make you love it. I would recommend him to anyone!
Mr. Martin is an amazing professor! He loves Europe and WWII. You need to dedicate time for this class, to complete all 10 assigned tasks (labs and sky plots) and to study. He covers a lot of material, you don't need the textbook, only the notebooks (sold OCC bookstore). Very clear grading criteria, if you work hard you are going to do well.
He can be very intimidating at times. He is very old school (uses the same notes and videos he did many years ago). Make sure you study a lot! Show your work on tests because even if you have no idea how to get the correct answer, you can still get a lot of points just by trying. This is not a course for people who want to put in less than 100%
Mr. Martin, didn't really teach, he just read off his notes. Also, when he gives out homework the directions are very unclear. Very unapproachable and vague when I tried to ask him questions about are assignments. At the last minute he would tell us there will be a required observing session the same day.
He is extremely old school. No calculators on tests, reads off the course notes that are dated at least 4 years back, and loves to get off track and talk about useless things. The only upside is that he is a generous test grader. You get about 1/3 of the points by just writing the correct equation. But he is not great.
His directions are very unclear & he doesnt allow you to use calculators on exams!! He teaches from his notes that he reads directly from. His notes are not helpful and do not include worked out examples or a clear description.
One of the best professors I've had! He cares about his students and pushes them to do better because he knows they can do it. As long as you follow along in the lectures, do the labs/homework, and genuinely understand the material you'll pass the class with no problem. He is a tough grader, but he gives a clear grading criteria. He is also funny!
Very unclear when assignments are due, very dry. Reads word for word on the notes written years ago. Never responds to emails and does not have D2L. The only way to get in contact is to go see him. If you miss a class be ready to have no idea what is going on as you will have no way to contact him when not on campus.
I'm surprised to see so many negative comments about professor Martin. I guess everybody wants to pass this class without putting in any effort! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! Read instructions / grading criteria CAREFULLY and you'll pass without a problem. Also, the professor is ALWAYS willing to help students one on one ( before / after class )! Take him!
GSC1580 (Astronomy) Final Grade: B Pts: 860/1000 Con: The main issue with Prof. Martin is, in my opinion, his teaching style all he does is read, monotone, out of his OWN (written himself) textbooks for all two hours of class; and SO MUCH HOMEWORK/LABS Pro: Tests are good if you study (tip: get the 'OBJECTIVES' VIDEOS on your FLASH-DRIVE)
Mr. Martin is a great teacher. You have to put some effort to do really well in this class. Do not worry about the calculator , just make sure you follow the right steps in solving the problems. Choose the right group for you in the lab since its a group project. It is a fun class and there is a lot to learn! Enjoy!
He is very tough on his students do not take astronomy
I am a senior in college. Mr. Martin is one of the best professors I have ever had. Take him if you want to be inspired.
Prof. Martin is a great professor. i enjoyed his class. it was my first time taking phy. and i enjoyed it. he loves talking about his vacations and WWII stuff. he is intimidating at first, but he is a good professor. he reads off of his notes, and hates calculators. so study well and you will pass with no problem. Also he wants 20 errors for labs:(
Shocked to see so many good reviews. Took professor Martin for Astronomy and he was terrible. He reads word for word from the "textbook" (notes) that HE wrote a long long time ago. Very boring. If you are not good at memorization you will not pass this class.
Love this professor, if you apply yourself you will pass no problem. Always available for help, textbook is not required. HW problems will be pop quiz questions so do them. Tough grader but makes since so you dont make silly mistakes. Lets you re take a test if you fail to get it up to a 65. Throws out 1 lab and 5 quizes which really helps ur grade
If you dont plan on being an astronaut dont take this class. He will forget to give you assignments, he will go off on tangents constantly and he will stir the pot for no reason. God is the only place we get our freedom from how to do a cockney accent (a full 15 min video) and homelessness is a choice were some gems.
Directions for labs are very convoluted and Mr. Martin takes off points for such tiny details on lab reports (like leaving on an s) that it is possible to fail with hours of work. Gets sarcastic if you ask for help with a problem type that he just introduced 15 minutes ago. Discusses grades where other students can hear. Avoid at all costs!
Not sure what to say. He was a great teacher and really knows the topic! The class seemed a little harder than it needed to be, but I got through it. The labs kind of sucked. He's basically a university teacher at a community college. The only real downside is he let his political opinions slip a couple times.
