This professor is not very clear. He has a thick accent, and he does not have very good handwriting. He does not scale tests. The average on our first test was a 63, and he did not scale it at all. He just said we needed to study more. He gave us a test the day after spring break. I would not recommend taking his class.
Chemistry 112 is a hard class on its own but Surampudi does a fairly good job at teaching it. He mainly goes through example problems to teach the material but he also uses iclicker questions. Sometimes it is hard to understand what he says because of his accent but it isn't a real problem. Luckily, he scaled an exam we had with a low class average
Orgo 2 is already hard , however, Sravan tries to make it as simple as possible. If you go to office hours and try and familiarise yourself with him whenever you dont understand something he will definitely help you out. The first exam usually has the lowest average because people are complacent. 84% of your grade comes from exams.
Hard class, like all Chems. Relies on OWLs a lot (too much in my opinion, he may change this in the future though). Still learning how best to teach/grade course. First time professor my semester (Spring 2016). Really wants students to succeed. If you go to office hours and talk to him he will try his best to help you, really dedicated to students.
Dr. Surampudi is an awesome professor, if you pay attention. He moves very quickly, but he posts the lecture slides so you can catch up on writing the notes. The exams are pretty straightforward, he provides lots of practice questions. He also does frequent demonstrations to cement concepts. He's a really effective, good professor.
He made Chem 111 very straightforward. The tests are multiple choice and really not bad if you do the OWL homework.
He does a really great job covering material and takes the time to make sure students understand what he is teaching. Tests are very easy if you have done the homework. Overall, he makes getting an A very attainable for what some would call a difficult course.
He was a genuinely nice guy, but he is next to impossible to understand most of the time, and he was not very thorough. Somewhat condescending to questions. Often made mistakes in problems and then argued with students about it. I wouldnt recommend.
He does a good job explaining the material. Although he is sometimes tricky to understand or read his handwriting it gets easier. He genuinely cares about how well you do. Exams are easy if you do the owls and pay attention to the examples in class.
He's a really kind professor who cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Whenever I ask questions he follows up either at the end of lecture or before the next one to make sure I understand. Does his best to keep students interested and is a very fair grader.
Lots of owls but everything is straight forward. 3 exams and a final. All multiple choice and he even gives extra credit and the exam reviews are very helpful. Genuinely a good and nice professor who cares but chem was just a tedious class bc of the owls
He's a great professor! The averages for his tests all fell in the B range and if you do well on the take home exams they'll bring your grade up! He gives plenty of time and a lot practice to do and to bring your grade up, so do it! He hold office hours and if you ask a question in class he'll follow up with you.
He is the best! Would take again!
iClicker is used EVERYDAY so don't skip his lectures. Those small points could make a difference. The OWL assignments can be annoyingly long. They are easy points to get so don't skip them. Test-wise, look over his powerpoints and do practice problems (OWL usually provides a bunch, take advantage of it). Easy class overall.
Lectures are clear and straightforward, and posted before and after each lecture with notes from the class. The OWL homework can be annoyingly long, but easy enough with infinite chances, and he is always willing to help with any questions. Tests are important, but the take-home exams are good chances to boost your grade, so do them.
Do all the OWLs spread out, not all at once. If you can do the optional exercises, they're super helpful. Anything that's in a lecture is in an OWL somewhere, but go to class because there is iClicker attendance. All exams are 25 multiple choice. He clearly enjoys teaching and wants you to do your best.
This professor clearly knows his chemistry and his passion for the subject shines through in his lectures.
If you put in effort in this class you will receive a a good grade even if you aren't good at chemistry. Overall good teacher and simplified everything down and wants you to do well. His class had some of the best averages for Chem 111.
He is a great professor who really knows what he is talking about. He is a great guy and an excellent teacher, especially given how hard of a subject it is.
I always struggled with chemistry in high school and because of him I was able to actually do well in the class. I could have gotten an A had I had better study habits, because his notes are extremely easy to comprehend. I highly recommend Surampudi, especially if you are someone who struggles with chemistry and want a professor who cares.
I've always had bad chem teachers/professors, so I really don't like chemistry and was nervous for Chem 112. The material can be tricky, but Surampudi does a great job simplifying it and wants everyone to understand it. The owls can be annoying if you wait until the last minute to do them, but they help for preparing for the exams!
Great professor for both chem 111 and 112. I hate chemistry but Surampudi made it enjoyable. Study his lectures (that are easily accessible) and do his practice OWL tests. He is extremely kind and approachable and sincerely cares about his students.
He's really good at explaining concepts, and he does plenty of practice problems to solidify understanding. He will readily answer any of your questions and is very kind as a person. He does move fast at times, but if you ever need extra time writing the notes, just ask him to go back and he'll be more than willing to do so. Overall great teacher.
Chemistry is most definitely not my cup of tea but Surampudi simplifies the most complicated material so that you can understand it well. Make sure you do the OWLS and study for exams and you'll be fine.
He explains things pretty well and he posts his powerpoints online but when he lectures he goes really really fast so it can be hard to keep up. The tests aren't that hard though and they're a lot like his take home exams.
lectures are very clear and he makes sure that you understand the topics before moving on. the pace is very good and i really like his style of explaining the topic, doing a problem, then letting us try it with a clicker question that just counts for participation not correctness
He is really sweet and genuinely cares about his students! He makes chemistry interesting and simplifies it down to make it easier to understand. Chem was still hard but I'm glad I had him. His tests are fair and the lab and owl grades really help your grade
THE BEST. i had him for chem 111 and 112. He's super nice and really wants you to do well. He posts his lectures all online and the only homework you have is OWL, they're all due the day of your test. There's iclicker but they aren't based on accuracy, just attendance. Everything on test is only from the lectures and no reading the textbook!
Surampudi wants everyone to succeed in his class. He is clear about what will be on the exams and practice exams are very similar to the real thing. He offers lots of opportunities to get ahead if you fall behind on an exam. All his exams are MC/drop down questions taken directly from owl. Homework is not overwhelming
Orgo is already awful, but having this guy as your lecturer is great since he actually cares. Attendance is base do iclicker participation. Personally I didn't find his lectures helpful, but using the textbook I was able to get by. Even if you don't pay attention in lecture but read the textbook you'll do well.
Pudi made chem super accessible. His lectures are on the faster side, but he explains concepts in multiple ways and often with a demo. There is a lot of OWL homework so start that early and the tests make up 62% of your grade so study up!
The course was well set up. Homework was all online and there was plenty if time to complete the assignments. There was also opportunity for extra credit. Chemistry 112 lab was a complete joke. Surampudi is a nice guy but his lectures are insanely, mind-numbingly boring. I could barely pay attention for more than 10 minutes at a time.
I took Surampudi for both 111 and 112, and I don't regret it at all. He's clearly very knowledgeable and puts a lot of effort into his lectures. Go to class and try to stay on top of OWLs, and do them before class if possible to better follow lectures. Don't buy the physical book, everything you need is on OWL.
Great and caring professor.
During high-school, chemistry was always my weak spot, but as soon as I stepped into his class, my perception of chemistry changed completely. Honestly the best chemistry teacher I have ever had.
I love Surampudi! I have him for Orgo I right now and am definitely going to try and take his Orgo II class next semester. He explains topics very clearly and always does live demonstrations in class. He is very devoted to his job and clearly puts a lot of effort into planning and executing his lectures. His exams are fair and homework's not bad.
Surampudi has no ability to helpfully answer questions in class. He does not give enough background knowledge for students to understand topics that he is building up on, and doesn't use the feedback from the fact that every clicker question has equal answer percentages for every question to realize that he isn't teaching anyone at all.
Anyone who pays attention in his lectures and puts in the minimum effort(OWLs, Review Sessions) does well in the class. Everytime he answers questions he asks if he has made things clear to ensure he gets through to his students. He genuinely wants everyone to do well in class and is always accessible to answer any questions you might have.
Pudi is definitely the best professor for intro chem at UMass! I took this as a senior because I'd heard so much about bad professors, but Pudi made it enjoyable! The lectures are packed, he moves quickly and OWLs suck big time, but overall you learn so much and it's not too painful. Pudi is clear in his explanations and if you keep up, it's great!
Surampudi is a good professor. He moves very quickly and does a few examples, but not many. Be prepared to write lots of notes. The grades are composed of a lot of things which is nice (not too exam based.) He always asks if there are questions, but can be a little rude when answering sometimes. He really cares and shows it though. Would recommend.
the final counts just as much as a regular test so don't stress too much but it can replace your lowest test grade. 40% is owl and I clicker. Make sure to do all the owls because 10% is dropped so you'll get extra credit for the dropped portion. The molymod model does help so if you can buy it you should. practice Iclicker question while studying.
Surampudi is one of the best professors I have had. Organic chemistry has a reputation to be very difficult, however, Surampudi is very clear about what he expects and teaches the material extremely well. Review the lectures, make flashcards, and do tons of practice questions! He replaces the lowest exam with the final if its higher.
EASY A! Exams were all easy as well as final. Owl is easy 100 for HW. Toughest grading is lab which depend on partners and TA, not professor. Everything from lecture is in slides posted so no notes just listen than go back slides. He's really nice and wants everyone get an A. If you do owls and understand that and lecture examples and concept easyA
Great lectures, easy to understand, grade is balanced well between exams, labs, and HW.
One of the best lecture professors I've ever had. He is fast-paced, but very clear, concise, and straightforward. Tons of writing during class but he posts his lecture slides on moodle. As long as you listen and do all the owls, you'll get an A.
Surampudi goes insanely fast in lectures since there's tons of material to cover. The exams have almost the exact same questions as the homework and practice tests so do those and you'll get an A.
Surampudi was a great professor, I've always found chemistry rather easy but with him as my teacher it was a breeze. His lectures were very in depth and he goes pretty fast but you don't have to worry because he posts the days slides with everything he wrote in class almost right after class making it easy to catch up. Onecantellhe'sreallyinvested.
Surampudi is a great chemistry professor. I had the pleasure of being in his class for chem 111 and 112. He makes his expectations very clear from the beginning and his lectures are straightforward. His practice exams are almost exactly the same as the actual exams. A real gem of a teacher.
Surampudi is a great professor. I had him for chem 111 & 112. Although some people might think he covers the material a bit fast, as long as you go to the exam reviews and take the practice exams you'll be fine. He posts all of his notes online so I tend to just listen in class. Final replaces your lowest test grade. Top notch guy. Got an A in 111.
Professor Surampudi may move quickly in his lectures sometimes, but is always willing to slow down and answer questions when asked. He is specific and concise with his teaching, making the material a lot less confusing. He also splits up online OWLs which is way more conducive to learning.
Orgo is a tough subject, but Surampudi makes it easy to understand. His lectures mirror the online exams and genuinely cares about how you do. Seriously, take it with this guy. He's the best! 3 exams, OWL hw (not a lot), iClicker participation, and a cumulative final (can replace lowest exam grade if better).
I took Surampudi for Chem 111, 112, 261, and 262 and all four times Ive had great experiences. 262 in particular was extremely doable with his lecturing and if you pay attention in class and do the examples in class and actually think about what is happening, youll have no trouble
112 is t o u g h but his class is fair. He goes fast because that's the only way to cover all the material. He posts slides online of everything covered in class. Pay attention in class, do owls as you go (helpful to put in a wrong answer then write out the steps it gives you on how to do problems). Exams get harder as you go - try to stay on top
112 is a fairly hard class but pudi makes it totally doable. He really cares about his students and tries to help wherever he can. iClicker is used but he tries to make lectures fun with demonstrations. Be prepared to take multiple pages of notes per class since there is a lot of material. Tests are hard but practice tests help a lot.
Pudi is a goat. He explains things very well and makes lectures somewhat interesting. Can be funny sometimes too. Overall, a great professor.
The GOAT. The best explainer of chemistry I have seen in my life.
Surampudi truly cares about his students and loves teaching. He was very accessible outside of class and going to office hours definitely helped. His tests are hard, they seem to test you on all of the ifs, ands, or buts of the material. I heard the other orgo 1 prof has easier exams
I had a really rough time with chem in HS, but Surampudi made chemistry feel doable again. He makes the class very easy to pass, but you definitely have to work to get higher than a B in this class. Go to office hours! He posts all of his slide notes, but don't be fooled- he goes much farther in depth during class.
Professor Surampudi could not have given any more opportunities to pass. The tests can be tough since it is only 25 questions, and getting 3 answers wrong already puts you at an 88. However, labs were guided and easy if you have a good group. Take notes before class, and just listen during class. LOVED professor Surampudi, have him next semester.
In terms of chem 261, it is hard, there is no getting around it. However, Sravan has this unique ability to explain concepts so that they actually make sense, and more importantly he is able connect with his students. The only downside is that the exams are only 20 questions which makes it hard to do well. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend
This class is an easy A. He is a great teacher and truly loves the subject hes teaching.
I loved Surampudi! I struggled with chemistry in high school and he actually made it so easy to understand! He genuinely cares about his students too. I wish I could take him for CHEM112. I would highly recommend taking his class!
Very lecture heavy and hard to grasp on. doesn't leave enough time to take notes and says they're on his Moodle but the equations he puts on aren't step by step its just start and finish. Doesn't record his lectures so when you look at the notes you don't have an explanation. my advisor that helped make my schedule said he was the best but no.
Good teacher and makes you really work for the grade. You need to attend the lecture to pass. If you work hard on the OWL and make sure you study you will be fine.
He makes the material and expectations perfectly clear. As long as you stay up to date on the material and study you'll do great.
Professor Surampudi was one of my favorite professors at UMass. I took chem112 and orgo1 with him and I wouldn't have learned the material from anyone else. The material is very challenging but he gives detailed explanations about everything that you need to know. He gives great review sessions and if he taught orgo2 I'd definitely be taking it!
He is kind and passionate but his grading is terribly difficult. His exams are insanely difficult. His material is so difficult I could not even get help from an SI leader who in fact teaches chem111 for another professor at the school. Worst of all, he did not post a single grade in Moodle all semester.
Class is harder than 111. Tests are only 20 questions and quizzes 10 so grade can easily tank. Very clear with explanations and lectures recorded.
Surampudi is probably the best professor for chem 111. He is so passionate about chem and clearly loves to teach. While the exams can be difficult, if you can do the OWLs you will be okay. For me, the switch to online learning tanked my grade since he only offered prerecorded lectures which did not keep me accountable. I would def recommend him!!
Professor Surampudi's lectures were very clear and went through all of the information needed to pass the exams. Chem 112 was a bit more difficult than 111 because of the grading system for exams as there are only 20 questions for each.
As long as you do the Owls and listen to lecture, you should be fine.
Biggest thing I have learned about online classes is thoroughness and organization. Dr. Surampudi has definitely figured out all the details to make an already tough subject less stressful because of his organization.
Took 111 over 6 week sumterm... it just about killed me. The amount of information crammed into 6 weeks is SO overwhelming. I literally worked 80-100 hrs a week (granted I wanted to pull an A). 1 week before the course begins, you can start the course (Preview week). I DEF RECOMMEND, I did not. Surampudi is good, fair, wants you to succeed.
This man is really kind and wants everyone to do well. I would 100% take again. The lectures were extremely straightforward and he is very clear about grading.
Surampudi is a great professor I've had him for Chem 111, 112, and 261. He really wants people to do well in his class and is a great lecturer. You won't regret taking any chem course with him.
He is one of the best professors in umass. His lecture is amazing and he cares for students, always trying to make orgo easier for us.
I've had Surampudi for 111, 112, & 261 and he's actually the best at teaching chemistry. Attending lectures isn't too important, but definitely help and expose you to questions you'll see on exams. Online teaching was just as good, he explains things clearly and getting A's exams isn't hard if you understand the homework. Definitely take his class.
I was so scared of orgo but Pudi makes it easy. He'll walk you through everything step by step and I feel like I really learned a lot in this class. As long as you work on understanding reactions logically, you'll be completely fine for this class. Really wants his students to do well and gives lots of extra credit.
Surampudi is very good at teaching the materials. His exams are harder than the other two chem professors, but student do better on pudi exam because he is better at getting the material across. The other two professor gave out a lot of extra credit. I know that Skouta gave out 14 points because the class ave was low. Pudi gave only 4 on exams.
Professor Surampudi is the best professor at teaching chemistry. It's obvious that he puts in a lot of work to make his lectures super helpful and informative. He hosted problem solving sessions during class times in addition to pre-recorded lectures. You can't go wrong with him as long as you are willing to learn!
I always try to take my chem courses with this prof. Easily the best I've seen in the department at UMass. He does his own research, which he explains more in this course. He's great at explaining, very fair (yes he also gives some extra credit), & overall very friendly & awesome! This was my second semester with him & I'd recommend him to anyone!
Orgo is hard and there is no getting past that. However, Surampudi does his best at explaining difficult concepts in lectures. Owls and studying is really the only way you can pass. Tests are 60% of your grade
Orgo isn't an easy class, but Surampudi does a good job teaching what you need to know for tests. He's clear, concise, tests are short and the OWL HW is fair. I took this during COVID, so I was able to refer to notes about reactions during tests, but this class would have been very difficult if I had to memorize all reactions/mechanisms.
Orgo is not as bad as I thought it would be, and I give all the credit to pudi. He is so great at explaining things and I feel like everything builds on itself and he shows how it all connects. Really takes his time to explain concepts and truly wants his students to succeed. Wish he taught 262 next semester.
Orgo is extremely hard. There's no way out of the work, but Pudi makes it seem possible. He gives his students great lectures and content. He has lots of office hours and problem-solving session as well. Overall just the best! 100/10 recommend.
This guy is goated. Amazing lectures which are clear and actually explain tough concepts. HW was not too hard but there is a lot. Very kind prof who genuinely cares for student's wellbeing. Highly recommend him!!
Surampudi is such an amazing professor, genuinely cares, and his slides and lectures are clear. He gives a lot of external resources and added Packbacks so there is more to be graded on. Orgo is hard and this semester has been awful and that's the only reason why our exam grades were low. If it was in person, I'm sure they would be higher.
Good guy, also gives extra credit on exams if you do the practice exams. Exams are not too bad. Overall solid class and solid guy
Professor Surampudi is an amazing professor. He offers some extra credit on exams and in general, his lectures are really clear and helpful, especially if you go to his problem solving sessions. He cares greatly about his students and is very accommodating for your personal circumstances. Overall hes an amazing professor and I highly recommend
Very nice prof, that gives a lot of extra credit and is very flexible with grading. His lectures are amazing, so all you need to do to do well in his chem class is watch lectures and do hw to learn the materia.
He offers students extra credit throughout the semester. His problem-solving sessions are super helpful when studying for the exams. He drops the lowest quiz grade. There are three midterms and a final. Also, the lectures are clear to understand. Surampudi really wants you to succeed in his class, def TAKE chem with him!
Surampudi is an absolute gem of a teacher, the most helpful chem teacher you will ever have. He provides so many opportunities for you to do well like problem solving sessions and multiple instances of extra credit. The material is a bit challenging but if you have time, there's no excuse for you to not be able to get an A with this man.
He is an amazing professor. He gives a lot of extra credit and listens to his students. He really wants his students to excel and he is very nice and accommodating. Grading consists mostly of exams and homework, but the exams are very similar to the homework. Chem 112 is hard in general, but he actually wants to see his students do well.
Surampudi is one of the best professors I have had at Umass, he is extremely understanding in regards to making up work and very reasonable in his grading. He cares more that you complete the work and understand it than any other Professor Ive had. I have taken his classes both online and in person and he is equally fair in both 10/10
Surampudi is a solid professor. Some of the CHEM112 material can be tricky for some, but his lectures explain the concepts very clearly. Lots of opportunities for extra points, and he is understanding with feedback. Go to the problem solving sessions if you need help. Exams are just like quizzes/owl problems. Taking him for orgo next semester.
Honestly amazing! He was so kind and caring and you could tell he wanted everyone to succeed. He made chemistry really easy for me to understand - so much better than my high school teacher! I'm taking him again for orgo in the fall!
I've had him for Chem 112 and Chem 261 and he's wonderful! He is very clear about what kinds of problems he will be testing you on. There are also many opportunities for extra credit (which can boost your grade) and he is flexible with extensions. If you keep up with lectures and do the homework, you will do well in his class.
Professor Surampudi's course was engaging and he clearly outlined his expectations. His review sessions and practice exams are extremely helpful in preparing for exams. Orgo is a tough topic, but Professor Surampudi offers plenty of examples to help students learn the different concepts.
Professor Surampudis classes always fill up super fast so consider yourself very fortunate if you get in! Hes a wonderful teacher who wants his students to succeed. The content is tough in general but he tries to make it easier by giving a lot of examples. Exams are similar to the quizzes and owl homework. Highly recommend for any chem course!
By far the best professor I have ever had- I struggled with Chem 111 and 112 and was terrified hearing about how hard Orgo would be but he makes it make so much sense and it is surprisingly my favorite class. He is clear, concise, and explains every type of problem you will see on an exam in lecture in a way that students will understand.
Orgo is very tough and Surampudi does a great job of making things more understandable. The formatting of the class is very clear-cut and all of the info on the exams is given in lecture or homework problems. The material is hard but he makes it possible to succeed. Not super personable or someone you get to know but a very talented professor
Amazing lecturer. Orgo obviously has a bad rap as a notoriously difficult subject, but Surampudi lays it all out so detailed and clear. His lectures, drawings, slides, and explanations are top notch and if you pay attention, do the homework, take good notes, and study, you should be good to go. He goes fast, but that's the nature of the subject.
Tough subject made easier. You can tell he wants you to succeed. Taking him for a third time ( I took 112, 261 and next semester 262 )next semester. Not someone to get to know but someone who sets you up for success! One of the best professors by far at Umass.
Prof. Surampudi is definitely a solid choice for Orgo 1. I also had him for CHEM112, and I have found that in both courses he explains things very well. Weekly problem sessions outside of class for HW help, extra credit on exams. He tends to go quick in lectures, prioritize listening to him/watching him write out mechanisms over taking notes.
Orgo is hard, but Surampudi makes it ok! Will be taking his class for Orgo 2 next semester!
Prof. Surampudi is the best! Hes clear about what he expects in the class in regards to grades, homework, courseload, etc. Super considerate and his weekly HW reviews are very helpful. Orgo is hard but if you follow his suggestions and help its doable!
I was scared for orgo, but he made it super easy to understand. He truly cares a lot and gives lots of extra credit. The content is hard, which is not his fault. You have to go to lectures, not because they are mandatory, but because it is the best way to learn the content. I recommend him if you have to take orgo. I am taking his class for orgo 2!
SI sessions SAVED me in orgo, exams are pretty similar to OWL homework and quizzes. Lots of OWL hw so start early because it can be a lot depending on the chapter. There's two midterms and a final, the final replaces the lowest midterm grade. His problems solving sessions were super helpful for studying for exams and homework. Tons of extra credit.
He's a great professor who cares about the content and the students. Homework is minimal and not hard but you do have to put in the work to study. Go to SI sessions and his problem solving sessions. Do lots of practice and rewatch everything. You cannot study just based on your notes. It's hard but not impossible thanks to Surampudi.
Surampudi gives you so many different resources for success- all you have to do is utilize them. OWL homework due every Sunday helps with studying for assessments. Lectures are helpful and critical to success. SI sessions also help with things you're confused about. Show up, take notes, do homework, and put in the work and you will succeed.
Literally amazing!!! Orgo was definitely scary and not easy, but Surampudi gives you all the resources you need to succeed in the class. I took him for 112 also and found he is great at explaining concepts. It can be difficult and overwhelming at times, but he makes it easy to do well if you put in the work.
Orgo isnt an easy class but Surampudi is really clear. He really cares, so if you have any questions, dont hesitate to email him
Chem 112 is a hard course, but Dr. Surampudi is an amazing lecturer! He explains concepts clearly and works through MANY practice problems, so the homework will be fine if you write the explanations down. There are lots of opportunities to get extra credit to boost your grade significantly. It's clear he wants his students to do well and get an A.
Sravan Surampudi just seems much more competent and respectful than the other professors who taught CHEM 112.
ORGO has a reputation for being notoriously difficult, but Sravan Surampudi cares greatly about his students - “Never feel that a question is silly or irrelevant!” I give him a 100/10.
The definition of Sravan Surampudi is a very kind and funny person who’s genuinely interested in student’s well-being. ORGO is notorious for being tough, but Sravan Surampudi is much more caring and competent than Chris McDaniel.
If you have an option to take orgo with Surampudi over Chris, take it with Surampudi as Surampudi will do everything he can to make sure students get the best grade possible although orgo is a difficult class. You won’t regret it.
Surampudi is the undisputed favorite if you’re looking for a good chemistry professor.
I'm not the best at chem and I just don't like sitting through TTH classes but Surampudi's not bad! there are a few extra credit opportunities (PLTL, completing owl hw) but otherwise it's 3 exams, final, 5 quizzes, iclicker participation. doable
Professor Surampudi takes what could be a relatively impossible class to many, and turns it into something very digestible. Lectures can be slow paced at times, but that is due to the extensive time that is spent on explaining things. Additionally, the recordings of his lectures are easier to watch and understand than any other professor I've had.
Orgo is supposed to be difficult, but Dr. Surampudi is very kind and patient and has a knack of breaking down difficult topics into simpler chunks and explaining concepts clearly and with 0 condescension. If you have an option to take orgo with him over Chris McDaniel, TAKE IT WITH SURAMPUDI. You won't regret it.
Best professor or teacher I have ever had. If you need to take Orgo 1 or 2 at Umass, definitely take it with him. As long as you go to the lectures and do the work you will be fine. He gives great lectures and makes the material easy enough to understand. I wish he taught more classes so I could have him again.
I LOVE SRAVAN SURAMPUDI! He is actually the best chemistry professor I have had at UMass. I had Al-Hairi for 111, and she made that class impossible. Surampudi cares about his students so much and will make it so exams are 50% of your grade, but labs quizzes homework and attendance are the other 50%. TAKE HIM! You wont regret it!!
This class is super hard, it's a lot of math and a lot of concepts, but Professor Surampudi makes it so easy to understand. I haven't done well on tests, but he makes it so other grades can make up for a low test grade. Absolutely CARRYING the science department at UMass. TAKE ANY CLASS YOU CAN WITH SRAVAN!
Dr. Surampudi is one of the best professors I've had. I have taken him for chem 112, 261, and 262 and throughout all of his courses he has made material very easy to understand and has also made himself accessible outside of class when you need help. It's also very clear that he cares a lot about his students and their education!
Very thorough in explaining material. He often uses examples and tricks to help remember the concepts for tests. There are also lots of exam review options. The tests are a large portion of the grade, but easy to study for. I would definitely choose him again as my professor.
Great professor who is enjoyable to be around. Hard to find things to mark him down for that are directly related to him and not the difficult nature of the material, but at the end of the day the material could have been a bit easier had some changes been made to his style (Sometimes irrelevant lectures, memorization-heavy exams, very nice tho) :)
Orgo should be tough, but your best bet is to take Surampudi if you want to learn orgo while still getting a high grade. He is WAY better than Chris McDaniel, whose exam averages are always an F. Surampudi is kind and wants students to ask questions. Chris, on the other hand, can have an ego and be condescending and mean when asked questions.
Best prof ever. Lectures are super engaging and he is one of the nicest prof I've ever known.
Always take orgo with Surampudi if you have an option not to take it with Chris.
If you have to take orgo, Sravan Surampudi is always your best best. Unlike Chris, Surampudi is a very forgiving professor who's flexible with grading, gives multiple instances of extra credit in exams, and always cares about his students and listens to them whenever they're feeling burnt out.
Sravan Surampudi is a really nice dude and the greatest orgo professor to exist along with Nathan Schnarr. He's forgiving, talented, caring, and has a great outlook towards working with students. He helps boost confidence levels of students, consistently does a great job making tough classes easier, and encourages students to worry less.
I strongly dislike orgo. Took orgo 1 with Chris McDaniel, and failed. Retook orgo with Sravan Surampudi, and I can't even describe the improvement. Extremely caring and helpful human being. Exams are very hard but Surampudi gives multiple instances of extra credit to serve as grade boost opportunities; he is way better than Chris by a marathon.
Sravan Surampudi is a fair and considerate professor, which is rare in many of the professors in the chem department. He cares about his students, he's a forgiving grader who gives multiple extra credit opportunities, and he consistently does a great job getting students off the orgo struggle bus - SO much better than McDaniel.
Surampudi is a great man. He's forgiving, talented, and also has a good reputation of being a lot more considerate than most of the other chemistry professors. You're missing out by not taking his classes.
Get this man if you want a decent grade while still picking up useful orgo concepts. He is a hundred times better than McDaniel, whose exam averages are always an F. There's no way out of the work no matter who you take orgo with, but Sravan Surampudi cares about his students and has a much more forgiving grading policy than the latter.
Surampudi is an absolute angel. He was very patient and respectful and made it clear that he cares about student wellbeing and wants them to succeed. It can be easy to lose points on the exams and quizzes due to the high content density, but the extra credit opportunities he offered make up for it.
Surampudi is a great and funny guy who cares about his students, but orgo is still a lot of work. That said, Sravan Surampudi is a much better choice than Chris McDaniel for orgo any day.
Surampudi is wonderful. Such a nice, funny guy who is genuinely so invested in your wellbeing! I wish he was my dad. I took Chem 111 and 112 and orgo chem classes with him, and he just desperately wants you to succeed. IMO he's just a good teacher all around.
Would give Sravan Surampudi a 7/5 if I could. He cares greatly about his students, his classes are always critically acclaimed by students, and he sets you up for success as long as you put in effort.
Knowledgeable and detailed, but also considerate, flexible, and respectful, which is rare in many STEM professors. Classes taught by Surampudi fill up so quickly because he's reasonable and flexible with his grading, and he just wants his students to succeed.
Surampudi is a goat of an instructor. Really nice guy that cares for his students and puts so much effort into helping students succeed. Passionate, knowledgeable, down to earth, and one of the only chemistry professors who doesn't have the superiority complex seen in most of the other chemistry professors. If you can get him, GET HIM.
Surampudi is a life changing role model. Honestly, I would recommend taking Chem 112 with him regardless of whether you like chem or not. If you do not, you are missing out!
I went into both orgo classes expecting them to be brutal, and came out enjoying them as my favorite classes so far. Lectures were crystal clear, and the classes were so much easier than expected, but in a way where you still learn a lot of useful orgo concepts without too much stress. Your only good option for taking orgo is Surampudi.
Surampudi really cares about the success of his students and definitely is one of the better professors that I have had at UMass so far.
I love this man. So understanding and really wants you to succeed.
got an A in his chem112 class and taking orgo now. honestly it's not that bad! almost weekly owl HWs, 5 quizzes, evening exams at ISB. extra credit opportunities like taking the practice exam, PLTL which is so helpful for me bc my PLTL leader thoroughly goes over the topics before I take the quizzes. def have a friend to study with
Surumpudi is amazing. I had him Chem 112 and am taking him for Chem 262. Exams and quizzes are exactly the same as homework and properly structures his lectures to fit with the homework and exams. There are a lot of chances to improve your grade if you need to. You can tell he loves to teach and wants his students to do well. Absolutely take him
Prof Surampudi offers as many resources as possible to help students gain understanding. If you pay attention in lecture and understand the homework, exams aren't too difficult, but definitely not an easy class due to the material. If you have to take orgo, Surampudi will make it as bearable as possible, and it's clear he really cares.
Surampudi is unequivocally the goat. Do me a favor and go to his lectures and really listen to what he is saying. He is genuinely the best professor I have ever had. He keeps it real with you and wants his students to thrive.
Surampudi is one my favorite professors at this university so far. He is kind and very accessible through email and office hours. His lectures can be fast but that's just the course itself. I definitely recommend going to SI sessions as they work closely with him and understand what he is looking for in exams.
Really good lecturer, explains things well, fair grades. OWL is really helpful for learning. Sometimes take a bit to get exam grades released. Class can be time consuming but that's just the nature of the course.
I really enjoyed Professor Surampudi's lectures. Surampudi is definitely one of the better professors in the chemistry department, despite the difficult nature of orgo.
Bottom line: Orgo is hard, but Surampudi makes it bearable, and almost enjoyable?! Lectures are dense, but his explanations are solid. I think what makes him so great is that he acknowledges students' anxiety with the class, but reassures them that it's doable if you put the work in! Utilize the tools he makes available to you and practice OWLs!
Definitely take Dr. Surampudi any chance you get! He is an amazing teacher and will make sure you truly understand the content while teaching. He is very understandable and will go in depth about the material. Highly recommend.
His lectures are very organized and the clicker questions were helpful for exams and quizzes. The format of homework questions was not similar to lecture content. Attend the SI sessions and you will know how to best study for this class!!
Orgo is by no means an easy class, but Surampudi is very detailed with his explanations and cares a lot about his students. He offers many ways to succeed, including practice exams which he gives extra credit points for doing. Very nice and brings some humor to the course as well. Never gonna forget the first time he said chair flip
This is by far the best professor I have ever and will ever have. It is difficult material but he explains it clearly and presents everything in multiple ways. He really wants you to do well and extra help is everywhere. If you have the option take this class with him!!
He is literally the best prof in this whole university like please take a class with this man it is the best decision you will ever make
Most definitely one of the best professors I've had so far. He explains the material well, even the hardest units, and wants to ensure everyone succeeds in his class. He is super chill and very understanding. I one hundred percent recommend anyone to be in his classes.
It is chemistry so you do have to pay attention and attend class. SI sessions are so so helpful. Professor wants you to succeed and is always available to help. OWL homework, 5 quizzes, 3 exams and a cumulative final that if above text average will replace lowest test. Go to class/pay attention and attend SI sessions and you will succeed.
He's a very clear and telligible speaker. He even made the time to get demonstrations prepared so the conceptual stuff doesn't seem random. There is more than enough practice problem sets that he's prepared for students to succeed, like a quiz before every practice exam before every exam. If you care like he does, you can do well.
Definitely one of the best profs for Chem 112. I will say that the way he approaches some of the math can be different than how OWL will teach you how to do a given problem, which may be confusing. Other than that, he is really understanding and wants you to succeed. Exams and quizzes make up most of your grade, and some of the OWLs are dropped.
Attendance matters. He only allows you to miss five classes, including emergencies, university-approved absences, and your clicker not working. Mine has not worked all semester, so there goes 5% of my grade. Not many do well in this class, but the only saving grace is doing the homework and doing well in labs.
Professor Surampudi is easily on the best chemistry professors I've ever had. His lectures were easy to follow and he took the time to talk through every concept, problem, etc. He is great about answering questions and puts weight on more than just exams in order to boost grades. He also is a very caring guy and wants his students to do well.
If I am being honest, it took me a while to get used to his teaching style. I would say that if chemistry doesn't come easily to you, you're going to have to spend a good amount of time outside of class learning the material. The exams tended to be harder than the material we learned in lecture, but the quizzes were fair; they were take home.
Chem112 is harder than 111 but Surampudi teaches it well. Also, despite the harder content, exams are worth only 55% of your grade so it is relatively easy to get a good grade in the class. If you attend lecture and make an effort to understand the homework you'll have no problem with this class.
I would recommend taking him for Chem 112. His lectures are a mix of slides, clicker questions, and demonstrations. His exams are more challenging compared to the Chem 111 exams. However, he substitutes the final exam score for a low exam score. Also, there is extra credit for completing more than 90% of the OWL homework.
He's a really good guy, and cares about his students and their performance. If you need help, he's very willing to give it as long as you ask. Made chem just a little more bearable! He's a really great guy, engaging lectures and stuff. Definitely a difficult class though, and you'll have to be willing to put in a lot of work.
Prof Surampudi is genuinely cares for his students and wants to make sure that everyone succeeds. He understands that chemistry is a difficult subject but he manages to make it easily understandable. It's easy to get an A if you put in the work, do the OWLs and go to lecture and you should be able to pass without any problem.
One of the best chemistry professors. Very understanding and teaches the material well. He uses examples and analogies to simplify difficult concepts. Does his best to help students understand the course and does his best to relate the material back to us. Highly recommend him for any chemistry course that he teaches.
DO NOT RELY ON OWL!!! Coming from Chem111 I thought this class would be just as easy, turns out I was completely wrong. Surampudi wasn't the problem, overall he's a really good professor. General Chemistry 2 is just really hard. The final exam buff saved me from getting a C.
Really good Professor. Chem 112 is way harder than Chem 111 as it is more math and formula based. Surampudi is hands down an amazing professor. His lectures are amazing and is really accessible outside of class. 3 exams, 1 final, OWL hw, 5 quizzes, Iclickers, and labs. Holds a review session before each exam. Gives extra credit if you do all Hw.
Prof Surampudi is an amazing teacher. He really cares about his students and he wants everyone to learn and get good grades. I have always found Chem to be difficult but the way he explained things made it easier for me to understand. Do all the HW bc not only do you need it for the exams but you get extra credit in the end. Study and attend review
He is the best! His lectures were relatively short, didn't drag on any topic but made sure everything was easy to understand. He held weekly problem sessions as well as exam reviews. The exams were exactly like the Owl homework. It was a lot of work in little time, but that was expected for taking it during the summer semester.
He is awesome. He is knowledgeable about organic chemistry, and if you attend his classes, he explains everything in detail.
Very nice & smart prof but this class was rough & not just because of the hard material. Practice exams often did not reflect what was actually on the exams & the owls did not help with studying. Two extensions on homework, cumulative final & replaces lowest exam. Offered ec for doing practice exam but didn't help much. Take with Schnarr if you can
This man is a savior for students who don't want to take orgo with McDaniel. If you are lucky enough to take orgo with Surampudi, please go for it! Clear and relatively straightforward lectures for what otherwise might be difficult concepts. Exams were also pretty reasonable.
Most amazing Chemistry professor I have ever had. Orgo is a hard class no doubt but if you're gonna take it, take it with professor Surampudi. His lectures are extremely well structured, very informative and clear. The only studying i did for exams was rewatching his lectures and doing his questions.
Took this class over winter. Amazing lecture videos and explains content in a way that becomes easy to understand using analogies. Teaches very well and clearly wants to see students succeed in this course. Work load is not overwhelming considering the subject he teaches. Would highly recommend this professor, inside and outside the classroom.
Lectures are very fast paced, but are recorded so you can go back and watch them. Attendance is not mandatory, but the iClicker questions are helpful and sometimes these questions are on quizzes are exams. The quizzes and exams are hard, but he gives you optional extra credit practice exams. Overall a really good prof though.
Surampudi was a great lecturer. He covered the key points perfectly, and his notes were easy to understand. He hosted zoom office hours for an hour to help with acid-base titrations, one of the trickier units. He cares about your success, and even had an inspirational speech on the last day of lectures. He also had interesting in-class experiments.
one of the best professors i've ever had. Made working on subjects that I expected to be boring actually exciting as he connects math to theory using examples and works through every type of problem you need to know. OWL is your best friend for exams. PLTL + clicker is easy points.
Surampudi is an amazing professor with a passion for teaching. He only wants the best for his students. Having taken orgo, many people say 112 is harder. Just study, use the OWLs, and practice!
the goat. chem 112 is humbling so take him for a better experience. GO TO LECTURE it is so helpful
Such an amazing professor and for a chemistry class that means a lot. Tough course but he made it so much more manageable for students. Very helpful and cares about how his students do. Practice exams are like the tests. Lectures are very clear. Uses practice questions from HW in lecture to help students. Answers emails insanely quick.
he is a really good lecturer and he does care abut his students. however his exams are super hard and he has said it himself that the practice exams are not the same as the actual exam. he goes really fast and has iclicker to boost your grade. 50% of the grade is completion 50% is exams which i didnt like because exams are easy to lose points in
This man is probably kinder than Jesus himself. Super caring lecturer who really wants his students to understand the subject matter deeply and genuinely wants his students to succeed. Exams aren't hard if you study any type of question even available to you, they're all fair game. Lectures are fast but he always tells you what you need to know.
I liked how he did lectures but biggest issue was exams. The exams were harder and would contain questions and concepts that we barely went over. He did say the practice exams weren't going to be anything like exam iclicker is extra credit. exams are not only mc, so adding a decimal point could cost you many points with no partial credit
He's easily one of my favorite professors I've had till now. I found the class easy but I know others struggled at the beginning but very quickly managed to catch up. His teaching allows for that and he's straightforward with what is expected on homework, quizzes, and exams. He explains in an understandable way and attendance is 2% extra credit.
Surampudi is a caring professor who really wants students to succeed. The class is challenging, but going to lectures, using the practice exams, and tools like unstuck AI can help you do well. Engaging with his teaching style pays off.
Prof. Surampudi is a great lecturer who can break down complicated chemical processes into simple, digestible pieces. 112 is definitely a more challenging class than 111, but if you put in the work and pay attention to the great examples he gives during class, its easy to walk a way with a very strong understanding of the concepts.
Dr. Surampudi is the best. He is super kind and has a great teaching style. His lectures are well-organized and well-explained, and he offers chances for extra credit (attendance and PLTL). He also took lots of time to review material in class rather than introducing new topics. One of my favorite professors by far.
Professor Surampudi consistently uses advanced vocabulary and moves extremely quick in terms of content, where taking notes becomes difficult. He provides 3+ points on exams for taking practice exams, however exam questions tend to be detail oriented. STUDY EVERYTHING ESPECIALLY REACTION EXCEPTIONS!
I was not a fan of this professor. The content was significantly harder and although that makes things more difficult I did not find that he was able to successfully get content across to the class. Along with that he did not like to go over things went VERY fast and would frequently get annoyed when students asked questions he thought were "basic"
Overcomplicates simple things and gets annoyed when students ask a question about something HE thinks is easy. Gives extra credit for iclicker questions, and +3 points on exams for doing the practice exam, but 1 question is 4 points so it doesn't help much. DO THE HW. 5 Quizzes timed 1 hour for 10 Qs. Be prepared to work over breaks/ holidays.
Graded 40% by weekly quizzes (2 lowest dropped) and 60% by three exams. Course focuses heavily on problem solving, particularly using spectroscopic data to deduce chemical structures (MS, IR, 1D/2D NMR). The course was narrow in its scope and I wish it covered additional techniques rather than spending so much time on problems. No homework.
A nice teacher to take an online summer class with. 55% of the grade came from exams and questions were very similar to quizzes and practice exams given the week before. Syllabus and teaching style were clear and the workload was manageable.
I sacrifice my first born child to Sravan.
Genuinely such an amazing professor. Orgo 1 is a difficult class but he is so good at breaking down concepts in class that I didn't even feel like I needed to study an insane amount for exams. His practice exams are EC, and are pretty similar to the real exams. I wish he taught every science class at UMass, my king
My GOAT. Bro can explain things better in five minutes from Gen Chem II than I ever got from that entire class. He is such an amazing lecturer and can ACTUALLY explain things. My GOAT can never do wrong so take Chem 261 with him if you can
Surampudi is an amazing teacher and he explains orgo in a way that makes sense. Make sure to take the practice exams so you get 3 points added to your exam scores. I was super worried for orgo, but it ended up being way more manageable. I will say I went to office hours once, and he was lowkey unapproachable, but in class, he tries to be funny.
Amazing, wonderful, fabulous. He made what is truly a daunting class into something very manageable. Umass has its fair share of strong orgo professors, but you truly can't go wrong here.
