i loved this teacher
She's definitely good! She knows what she's talking about, she does go through things fairly quickly. You have to pay attention and do the problems and the reading she assigns outside of class. But, she's very helpful and I highly recommend her.
This professor really knows what she is talking about. I went into class and she explained everything clearly and her slides are good so you know she spent alot of time preparing for this class and she put alot into it. She is a must take if you want to take any chem class, probably one of the best.
This teacher is the best!!!!!! I didnt understand the info at first but went to her office hours and she spent the whole time with me until i got the info. And plus her grading system is fair
NO ONE SHOULD TAKE HER. she is the only chem 6a proffessor that doesnt curve her exams! clicker points are great but her teaching styler is ridiculous. she talks so incredibly fast but the slides are helpful. she was a new teacher from colombia university this year so i had no idea how ridiculous she was until i took her!
make sure you go to office hours!!!!!!! she's a really good prof- knows what she's talking about. she really cares about your learning. I would DEF. recommend her. period.
Her slides are useful, but her lectures are just ok. She rushes through a lot, and she talks about history& info we dont need to know sometimes. I had to study a lot from the textbook on my own to survive. Her exams are pretty conceptual, which i didnt really like.
Prof. Brydges was probably THE worst choice for a Chem6A professor. She speeds so fast through lectures and her tests are difficult. Even doing many hours of studying was seemingly useless because it was not reflected on the poor test scores most receive. Take someone else who does not make you feel like you'll never understand basic chemistry.
Bridges is really enthusiastic about chemistry overall and goes really quickly during lecture so make sure you pay close attention. Puts all the lecture notes online so taking notes on what she says or writes on the board is better. Make sure you read the text and keep up with all of the material- she assumes you know it as she continues teaching.
Tough class. Brydges is an enthusiastic teacher who loves chemistry and she really does want you to help you understand the subject, but the way she lectures doesn't really help clarify the material if you don't already understand what is going on.
Prof. Brydges is really enthusiastic about chemistry and about teaching it. However, the pacing is insane at times. You need to prioritize reading the book BEFORE attending lecture. She is a good teacher but it's a tough class. 87% is an A-, 72% is a B-. Beware of MO theory, gas laws, and quantum mechanics.

Hard class. Overall, I felt the tests were not as straightforward as I expected. Quizzes were easy but the tests and the final were clearly much harder. Study up folks, if you want an A..
WORST teacher at ucsd. if you care about your gpa dont take her. she doesnt curve which kills your grade. when you go to her office hours to ask specific questions she tells you the answer in a round about way that doesnt help at all. despite her speedy lectures she didnt even cover all the chem 6a material!
I liked that she posted lecture notes online which helped in studying. However, her tests were so short and each question was worth so many points that it was really hard to do well. The book used for this class sucks but if you know her lecture notes and follow her study guides you'll do all right.
do not take her. she's really sweet in that she tries to help her students but brydges is definately a hard teacher. if you want to save your gpa DO NOT TAKE HER.
You can tell she really loves chemistry, but her lectures are disorganized you have to do a lot of independent studying to really "get it"
She was pretty clear in what she was teaching however, her exams were worded really weird. That's what made the class really difficult.
Stop complaining about there not being a curve. If there's no curve for a General chem class, that only means that there are enough people scoring above her A-standards that she doesn't need to curve final grades. Her tests are straightforward and concept-based (easier than math-based tests)
I loved chemistry till I joined her class. She goes over A LOT of stuff in one lecture so you never know what's going to be on the exams. Her exam questions are VERY tricky. Lastly, I didn't get a good vibe from her. She wasn't very nice to me.
Such a nice woman, very helpful, really cares about her students, but its very hard. She doesn't offer any extra credit which is hard, the tests are hard but then again it is chemistry, its going to be hard. If you take her, be prepared to work hard
Although she is passionate about chemistry, her lectures are difficult to follow. Most of her test material is conceptual so understanding the homework by itself isn't enough. OH are helpful which is important; 6B topics are difficult. Be ready to work hard in order to know all the material.
Second time rating this professor. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend her. She's enthusiastic, so A for effort, but her lectures did absolutely nothing for me. It's not just that the class was challenging--it's that I felt like I didn't have an instructor at all, I did so much independent study to just begin to understand the concepts.
Prof Bridges know what she's talking about. She goes over the materials very quickly and uses every last second of lecture. She put all the lecture notes online and is always updated. Her class is difficult but if you are up to date on the material its not that bad.
she's definitely passionate about her teaching, but i wouldn't recommend her class. her tests are extremely hard and just doing the homework and attending lecture doesn't really seem to be enough. she also made the ideas more convoluted than they were, confusing me even more. her class killed my gpa.
SHE'S HORRIBLE!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!! Her test are completely unfair and do not reflect the material she covers in class or the problems she assigns in the book. I took her for 6A & B and it was the biggest mistake!! She makes tons of mistakes on the lecture slides. When 70% of the class get questions wrong, it's clear she CAN'T TEACH!!!!!
Whoever wrote the comments below obviously got a bad grade or doesn't understand chemistry. Her tests are extremely fair and based entirely off the lecture notes and textbook. Moreover, she truly demonstrates a passion for chemistry unlike my 6A professor and her notes are extremely clear and to the point.
I got an A+ in this class too. FOr all you wannabe bio majors,if you struggled in this class due to your complete lack of science skills, better switch your major to cooking or fine arts. Even if you didnt understand her lecture notes, this class is completely self-teachable so the true biochem majors dont sympathize with you
Ok, some guy obviously is trying to make a point below me... Just how many A+s does she give out... seriously... I got an A in this class and the previous poster IS right for one thing. If you can't do chem... you won't be a doctor. Face it. Greys Anatomy dreams gone. Brydges is a great professor so don't listen to the rants about chem difficulty.
Professor Brydges was very helpful and insightful. The class itself was not hard, and if you took basic chemistry in high school you'll do fine. She's very approachable and office hrs were helpful. Attendence in both class and section is required and does affect your overall grade. Midterms were tricky.
Dr. Bridges is a confusing lecturer. She jumps around a lot and tends to explains concepts in a roundabout way. I felt that she failed to explain things straighforwardly even when I went to her office horus. Her tests do not represent her lectures, and they tend to be quite confusing.
She's pretty strict about talking during class, but overall a really great teacher. Didn't liker her at first but realized she really cared about her students. She wants you to do well. Go to her midterm or final review sessions; they help a lot! if you have Q's, she'll be happy to answer :]
At first I didn't like her b/c i thought she was just strict and mean, but later i realized she really cared about her students. Always willing to help if you have questions and wants you to do well :] go to her review sessions before tests; they really help! I strongly recommend!
She was Horrible. Chem 11 was meant for students who are never going to take a chemistry class again. Lower div GE and i was spending way too much time studying for the really hard exams. She gives alot of homework, makes class mandatory, and makes her exams hard.. it is frustrating to know that she is teaching us the same thing as chem 6a kids.
Brydges is a nice lady, and obviously very passionate about chem..she she truly wants you to learn chem. however, this class was unnecessarily and ridiculously difficult because of her. she taught us general chem which was not what anyone signed up for. Nothing against her, but if youre taking chem11, take a different teacher for an easier A.
she is good teacher. there's nothing difficult about the class.
Really really good chemistry prof who is passionate about the subject and making sure students understand it. Requires attendance in lecture and section plus weekly hw (which is online and sometimes frustrating), 2 midterms (okay if review notes/hw), final was pretty hard but overall class is review of high school chem. She's really approachable
Dr. Bridges is very easy to understand. Don't listen to the other comments, her tests are very straight forward and the grades are curved. definitely TAKE HER. She gives less homework compared to the other professors. I would take her again if i could!
She is awesome, Take her if you can!
She's great - really energetic and super helpful - you'll probably feel more enthusiastic about chemistry just being around her. Lectures and exams are clear, direct, straightforward. HOWEVER, to succeed, you'll need to do your part and work hard - read ahead before every class and do those suggested HW problems! The effort you put in will pay off.
You will definitely go in this class thinking, "Easy A. Chem 11, come on?" but if you really cannot think somewhat "analytically" when taking her exams (no calculator involved, so you had to do computations logically - I have no logic, haha) then you're doomed. However, I ended up with a B+ with the generous curve (72-86% was a B!).
She made me feel enthusiastic about chemistry & I'm a poli sci major! You can tell she loves her job. Explains things in a very clear way & her exams and quizzes are very straight forward. This is definitely NOT a class where you can slack off, but its not too terribly time consuming. An A is definitely feasible.
very enthusiastic and into chemistry. ALWAYS there for her students. Easy A for me--though I have a knack for chem. Tests VERY straight forward, as well as her lectures (PPT focused). Nothing tricky about this course. Great professor, recommend.
Great professor, really energetic and goes above and beyond most professors to help her students succeed. Exams straight forward and not math heavy, so she really wants you to understand what's going on instead of plugging in numbers. Final was a little harder than expected, but still very doable.
Very passionate about the subject. Her tests were all multiple choice, so there is always a chance to get a hard question correct. Chem 11 was basic chemistry so I can really speak much about how she teaches chemistry in a more detailed fashion but she is a really good prof and kinda cute at times.
I had Brydges for both 6A and 6B she was the worst chemistry professor ever!! I learned absolutely nothing from her and when I went to her office hours for help she blew me off and didn't help me understand the material at all. I'm now having to reteach myself chemistry in order to take 6BL and other higher division chem classes. NEVER TAKE HER!!!!
dont take her if you're taking the periodic table or for an easy A; very enthusiastic about chemistry but makes everything incredibly difficult. had to youtube concepts and learned better from that then from her about the same stuff. alot of work is necessary for her, and being a non-science major it was a pain
Honestly she is not a bad professor. She is really into her teaching, but she also gives out a lot of work. We have to do many extra stuff that other classes do not require. Besides that, she knows her material and she tries to make students learn as much if possible.
She's really into her teaching. very energetic and cares about her students. not difficult at all, but i think she could present the material better than she does.
She is very enthusiastic about chemistry and clearly shows it during lecture. Her exams were all multiple choice so it was pretty easy. She also had us write a report on certain topics which was a bit intimidating. Overall, she is a great professor!
The class is for non science major and is little hard for me it was really hard but is not really diffult. The prof. is really nice in office hrs and if u get to know her she is a great person. The class has some challenges but ask questions and go to review sections.
The class is for non science major and is little hard for me it was really hard but is not really diffult. The prof. is really nice in office hrs and if u get to know her she is a great person. The class has some challenges but ask questions and go to review sections and she really is passionate about chem.
Brydes is a pretty thorough in her lectures and pretty much everything you need to know for the midterms is in the lecture notes. She also held review sessions which were quite helpful. Plus shes super attractive, which is always good
Bridges is extremely passionate about chemistry, and it is fun to watch her do her thing while in class. She explains concepts well, and for chem 11 she kept things as tame as chemistry can possibly be. I would suggest reading the book if taking for a grade. If taking P/NP I would imagine you could coast through without too much effort.
I took Brydges for 6B, and I felt that she made learning the material as easy as it gets. Her notes are wonderful, and her tests are completely FAIR and CLEAR!! If you read and go to class, she makes learning chem so EASY. Also there's tons of ways to get points, so the exams aren't as heavily weighted. I made a point to fit her class in for 6C.
To give some perspective, here are some statistics on her WII class. Average raw score on the Final Exam : 32.1/50 (=64.2%). Grade distribution after final scores tabulated: 27.0% (A- or higher), 38.3% (B+ to B-), 26.5% (C+ to C-), and 7.6% (below C-). With this said, if you want to be in that top 27% you have to work pretty hard. Great teacher!
Friendly, helpful, very enthusiastic. Take advantage of her decent curve and generous ARIS guidelines...it's not as easy as you think! Nine quizzes, three midterms, and a hard final...but overall a good class and a good prof.
hot even though you guys don't agree
She's really approachable and kinda funny. She cares about the students' learning and she actually heeds students' feedback. Her lectures are a littlle confusing at times. very knowledgeable about the subject, and her test reviews are VERY helpful.
She is a thorough lecturer and knows what she is talking about. Tests fair and homework is actually helpful. Class is made for you to succeed so if you just put the effort you're supposed to, you should get an A :]
Tests are pretty straightforward. Class never got my attention. Her voice always put me to sleep. I still got an A.
Very helpful and enthusiastic teacher, tries her best to help you understand the concepts. She offered lots of help through extra sessions and office hours. Participation wasn't required, but if you participated, your final doesn't weigh as much. Should definitely take her class if you get the chance.
Nice lady who is very passionate about the subject, however I feel she makes things more complex than they have to be. Tests aren't hard, the only problem is that there isn't enough time to finish it properly. No time to sit and think for a min if ur doing it right. Study her lectures and ull do fine, as long as u have enough time on the exam.
generous and responsible professor! office hours are really helpful! the exams aren't hard at all!! Take her!
She is the nicest teacher you will meet here! Sweet and genuinely cares about all of her students. The tests are a bit difficult for a non science major science class, but overall the class is not that difficult. The time allotted was more than enough. There is a group project done in section. And be careful because your TA will expect a lot.
If you've taken high school chemistry, Chem 11 will be a piece of cake. Midterms and final are all multiple choice so don't worry too much. Weekly homework is pretty easy and section attendance isn't mandatory. You do need to do a group project though.
Prof Brydges is extremely nice and enthusiastic about chemistry. She is prepared and thorough in her lectures. However, if you have trouble with chemistry, it is best to read the textbook as well in order to imprint the information in your mind. I wouldn't say this class was easy but you can definitely get an A if you put in the effort.
Dr. Brydges was very helpful. It is easy to see that she is passionate about her field of study. Apart from Chemistry she also has a well of information which is useful for enriching the student experience.
I had her for Chem11, and I can clearly see that she's an AMAZING. Take her, she explains everything thoroughly. Her tests were pretty easy to me. Id def say her tests are fair. Take her! you wont regret it.
Dr. Brydges is an outstanding instructor. Her delivery is consistently very clear, and she keeps lectures interesting and engaging with lots of clicker questions and other tricks to get you involved. She was always very helpful in lecture, office hours, and review sessions. Take her class.
Professor Brydges is a very good Chem teacher. Her lectures are clear and she tells us what we need to know. She also has a very generous grading policy where she gives 3 midterms (instead of 2) and allows us to take our 2 highest scores. The final was also pretty easy with no trick questions. Go go to her office hours! She is very helpful!!
Dr. B is the best prof so far for chem for me! Her tests are fair, she does not rush any materials, and she holds very helpful review sessions. She is super helpful (especially during office hours) and she REALLY wants all her students to succeed. Get to know her! She tells great stories and is in charge of many events that you can volunteer for!
She cares a lot about her students and will put in the extra effort to help you understand. Her tests are decent and consistent with what she teaches. The only bad thing is during lectures she kinda treats the class like children. She needs it to be quiet before she will continue
Fantastic professor! I had her for both Chem 6B and C. She's very clear and enthusiastic during lecture. She cares a lot for her students too. Exams were all multiple choice and not that difficult. She holds very helpful review sessions too. The only thing I didn't like about 6C was the capstone project, but it was easy anyways.
Professor Brydges is amazing! She's clear and concise, and it's pretty obvious she cares a lot about chemistry and her students. Her exams are pretty easy but I found myself making a lot of careless errors. I got an A anyways. Brydges is awesome. Take her class.
Took two quarters. Very helpful. Don't be intimidated by her. She really wants her students to succeed. Always more than willing to help during office hours! Gives clicker questions that count toward participation grade (soft points to help your overall grade as well as prepare for the exams)
do very well on the first midterm, all the assignments, and in class participation questions. this well help your grade out a lot because the second midterm is very hard and the material at the end of the quarter is very confusing. brydges is a good teacher but for non-science majors, you definitely need to work for the A
Super teacher guys and gals!
The Chem 11 course is really very easy. I got an A+ in her class. She teaches well. But the homework is sometimes very confusing. And the discussion is boring actually. The teacher is good and the class is easy. Just take it!
This class is ok, I got a B. (I'm a psych major, and didn't do most of the reading.) She's very enthusiastic and wants to be helpful to you. We did clicker questions without clickers, not sure why...we got "voting cards" instead. Ok. Weekly homework is online, sometimes has weird errors in it. Overall she's very nice.
The sections were so useless but it's part of your grade so you have to go. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory but can contribute to 10% of your grade. Exams were very straightforward. Good class for a GE, I can't imagine a chemistry class being easier than this
Professor Brydges is a very passionate teacher. Her lecture is very clear and pretty easy. Book is useful.
Great professor! Interesting lecturer, too. Make sure to supplement lectures with textbook. The professor offers tons of practice problems and tests are just like them. You can tell she is really passionate and overall love the class!
Don't need to read the textbook. Her lectures and powerpoints teach you all you need to know. Three midterms, drops one. Optional clicker participation that can get you upto 5% of your grade free. Online homework (Sapling) very reasonable. So enthusiastic and helpful in office hours (but still don't need to go to OH to get an A)! Fantastic teacher!
Very passionate professor. Class is fairly straightforward if you attend lecture, pay attention, and understand the homework. If not, the exams are tricky and it is hard to catch up. Only take if you are willing to put in a LOT time for an A, but a B is very easy to achieve with minimal effort.
Professor Brydges is one of my favorite professors. Understanding her slides (the clicker questions in particular) and knowing how to do the problems in the reviews are crucial to doing well on her tests. She holds plenty of office hours and actually replies to her email. Take her if you can!
Great professor. Class is comprised of clear lectures, fair exams, and plenty of study resources. Homework and section can feel redundant, but both definitely help with final grades. Good GE course and professor.
Overall a great professor. She knows her chemistry and explains it well. She cares about her students and understand we have other classes and for a couple of lab reports she extended the deadline as well as hold extra office hours so that we can get help o the lab reports. She comes into lab occasionally and answers all your questions you.
The best Chem professor I've taken at UCSD! She doesn't trick you, everything she lectures about and assigns as homework is relevant. Do the practice exams, worksheets, and Sapling and you'll do great. 3 midterms, drops the lowest one and there's a project too. Highly recommend but be ready to work hard because Chem 6C can be difficult. Good luck!
She is passionate about teaching. 3 exam and a project and a final. Her final is quite long about 50 questions i used up most of 3 hrs and score 82% on the final. I studies very hard for it. Be ready to work hard on the exams, hw and project. Every point add up. She curved. I didn't really use the textbook but her note helped a lot.
Professor Brydges is so passionate about chemistry! I love her so much. She is very clear and very excited on every single topic she talks about. There are 2 midterms a final and a project. Her tests are very straight forward. she doesn't try to trick you BUT you do have to study to get an A. her grading scale is awesome!
Amazing. She truly cares about chemistry and her students. She is a true education focused professor, not just a rambling lecturer. You can tell she wants you to learn and enjoy the subject. The best teacher for Chem 11-13. Easy to understand grading with a forgiving curve. Straightforward tests. Go to class and do the homework you'll do fine.
TAKE HER! SIGN UP RIGHT NOW!
She was ok. Slow talker, squeaky voice. Attendance is extra credit, everything is podcasted (watch on x2). Doesn't cover much in class, but the hw prepares you well for the exams. She makes you do a capstone project and teaches you about life which is annoying. Tests weren't too tough, very straightforward questions on topics discussed in class/hw.
One of the best science professors I've had at UCSD. She really wants each and every student to succeed in her class. The tone of her voice makes you stay engaged and she lectures at a slow pace to ensure everyone understands the material. The class itself is challenging, but not as hard as other 6C professors. She's also pretty and dresses well.
okayish professor with decent lectures and and decent tests..
Make sure to do the practice midterms and understand the in class Clicker qs to prepare for her tests! I felt like her lectures weren't as clear as they could've been and I had to study a lot for her tests but I don't think she's nearly as hard as any of the other 6A profs. Doesn't curve, but tests are very fair and straightforward.
Very nice, tests are easy if you either read or attend lectures. Lots of homework and quizzes to pad your grade. Midterms are all multiple choice. Lectures are easy to follow.
I took her for a TYE course, and she has literally given me hope that not all professors are intimidating and hard to approach. She is such a genuine person and truly cares for all her students and their success. I could only aspire to be like her when I am out of college. She's full of knowledge and always willing to help!
Such a sweet woman! She is so dedicated to chemistry, and her research actually focuses on education so she really knows how to reach out to students and be a good professor. Although this class taught me I don't like chem after all, I would absolutely recommend her and this class. And the curve is fantastic - 72 for a B!
Best professor I've ever taken; she's extremely nice and very experienced! Her lectures are very clear, organized and concise, with (optional) iClicker questions that can give you up to 5% of your final grade. She gives amazing study resources, including practice exams, that are very helpful as well! Some exams were tough but still manageable.
Professor Brydges is amazing. She truly cares about her students and she is really passionate about teaching. Her lectures are optional but you can change your final to 35% of your grade instead of 40% if you attend the lectures. Also, she holds exam review sessions before midterms and finals to help you prepare for them.
Loved Professor Brydges!! She was incredibly accessible and held review sessions before midterms and the final. She always made sure to discuss why learning about chemistry was important and I really liked that she connected it to the bigger picture. Also, her lectures are podcasted so it helped a ton to be able to go back and listen to lectures :)
You can totally get an A if you learn throughout the quarter instead of cramming during finals week. She's very nice/approachable, holds review sessions before exams, has review materials (practice tests), and podcasts. You can get credit for going to lectures but it won't hurt you if you don't go. Sections not mandatory.
DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED. Biweekly Quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final. She posts lectures, podcasts, and hosts a lot of review sessions. Multiple choice tests so you either know the material or you don't. Very accessible. Always enthusiastic. Clicker points help. You will learn so much that your grade will not matter because youll be so proud.
Brydges lectures well (but is a little boring) and tends to be behind on time, so get ready to have HW due dates pushed back. She's a bit intimidating and can come off strong, so I rarely went to her office hours and instead went to TAs for help. Other than that, she's really fair with the midterms and final and is generous with grading.
She explains the material very well. She cares about her students and is passionate about chemistry. Tests are a lot easier than the homework and more concept based. Grading is generous. Class attendance is optional. Her class made me love chemistry!
Professor Brydges is fire
Don't go to lecture, she rambles and stutters so much so it hinders your understanding of the material shes trying to teach. Stay home and read the textbook instead.
Professor Brydges is the best chemistry professor at UCSD. She truly cares about every students grade and their understanding of chemistry. 3 in class quizzes, lowest one dropped. Homework on Sapling due once a week. 2 midterms, lowest can be replaced if you do better on the final. Review session before every exam. Clicker points in class.
It's hard for me to get comfortable in this class. A lot of pauses in lecture where you're told to stop and work with neighbors, which is tiring. Prof's lecture style is condescending, lots of unanswered open-ended questions, lacks brevity. Addressed the class as "guys and gals" 10k times, easy. Feigns accessibility. Multiple choice exams, yuck.
The course material and the way it was presented was very thought provoking. The field trip to the Birch Aquarium and the guest speaker was definitely the highlight of the seminar. I also really enjoyed watching other groups present the group project where we taught the class an interactive mock lesson.
She is a pretty good professor. The one thing I disliked about her was that sometimes she give us a homework question that we did not cover in class. Sometimes she rushes things too. Overall her class is not too hard. Participating in class and going to discussion can certainly benefit your grade. Her exams are fair.
Professor Brydges provides every opportunity for her students to succeed in her class. From review sessions to clear expectations for the finals, midterms, and capstone project, her class was oriented so that if you learned the material and put the smallest bit of effort you would do well in the class.
Stacy is a good lecturer. She respects students and gives good explanations during office hours. However, her homework due is very close to the lecture of the content (though she sometimes grant extensions). Most importantly, her midterms are much harder than practice midterm and my hard work never pay off....
I love this professor. I took her both for CHEM 6A and CHEM 6C. She is very caring and friendly. I always have talk with her not only about chemistry, but about the life plans. Chem 6C is harder than 6A since she require the essay writing, but if you study hard, you could still get an A.
I got an easy A+ and it is my first A+ through my college.
I've never had a professor who cared so much about her students. Reminded us every day. Lots of office hours. Makes study guides/practice problems for all exams. Exams are fair and basically repeat of practice problems. Gives live demonstrations in class. Always applies chemistry to the real world. Highly recommend her as a professor.
Brydges is such a caring professor! She tries her best to make lecture fun and applicable to real life, and provides many opportunities to boost your grade. However, her tests are relatively difficult, and often times I could not understand test questions even after the answer keys were released. She would also test you on the history of chemistry
amazing professor, but test are to difficult
Brydges is a very likable teacher, but do not be fooled. Her course is easier than others in terms of how she curves her exams. However, her class is very lecture heavy and she often goes by very fast in order to cover everything she has to. If you are not an expert at chemistry, you would most likely have to relearn or go over key points again.
Professor Brydges is by far one of the best chem professors at UCSD. Not only is she passionate about chemistry, but she cares very much about teaching and helping her students succeed. She is very accessible outside of class, even holding "lectures" in her office for students preparing for exams. Read the textbook and you'll easily pass.
Chem 6A with Prof Brydges is doable if you make sure you go back and try to understand what you didn't in lecture. I had to watch some podcasts over again, but it was alright. Prof Brydges as a person is SUPER caring, 10/10 would recommend. She answers questions on the discussion board quickly and is very accessible outside of class.
I feel like Professor Brydges is a great person, but her teaching style just wasnt for me. I feel like she went into great detail about conceptual things and at times she would talk pretty quickly. She is a great person and I feel like if her teaching style fits you shed be the perfect professor, but she just wasnt for me.
Didnt teach a lot of what was tested on, went way too fast, covered broad concepts and then 100% of the final was complex application problems. Practice exams were significantly easier than actual test problems and did not adequately prepare you for the tests. Quizzes were the only thing that actually matched up with what she taught.
I wish she cared as much about making sure we understood how to do the problems that she was testing us on as she seems to care about our general success... Shes sooooo nice but I dont feel like she prepared me well for her test at all.
I loved Prf. Brydges for Chem 6B. This is definitely a challenging class with any professor, but her care for her students and dedication towards teaching makes her class worth it. She gives a lot of extra resources if you're struggling in this class, including late night review sessions, extra office hours, and online materials. Would recommend.
Such great prof. Held 3 3-hour review sessions by herself, which were really helpful. Willing to answer questions during office hour. Great lecturer. Always explain things clearly. Grading criteria makes an A+ possible.
The class was pretty easy as long as you paid attention to the things she emphasizes in lecture. The tests weren't terribly difficult either, especially considering her grade cutoffs are very lenient. Between the lecture notes, homework, discussion worksheets, and practice tests, there was a lot to study from to prepare for the exam.
I liked her well enough. She's a good teacher, but I personally wasn't a fan of her lecture style. I often got very bored in class. She is very kind though and her class really is not that hard. Pay attention to lectures, or watch the podcast, do your homework, and study a bit and you'll be fine.
Stacey is a very nice professor, she cares about her student and wants them to succeed. However, I find it overwhelming in her 7LM class. It's like the "AP" version of regular 7L. You have so much more work than 7L! She constantly shows up in lab which really stresses me out and I get very nervous. She yells at people for not doing stuff right.
Very talky, and she explains things in complicated ways when there are much simpler ways to explain certain ideas. She likes using arbitrary words and phrases only known to people with years of chemistry experience. Lectures are very boring except some demonstrations, are very difficult to understand because of the terminology she uses.
First midterm is insanely easy but dont make the same mistake I did and barely study in time for midterm 2/final. Didnt really go to lecture or discussion bc I was lazy this quarter but she is super generous with grades and very approachable. Reading helps for that A but if you just want a decent grade you can get away with just lecture notes.
This was my first lab class which was a bit intimidating, but Brydges made the lab feel doable and understandable. She cares very much about her students. Highly recommend as a teacher.
Not even going to lie, she's really scary, her eyes stare into your soul in office hours. She researches in Chemical Education so you can easily buy into what and how she teaches. Sometimes she does get fancy with terminology which can be annoying, but she really cares. If you do struggle, pay her a visit and sh'll definitely help.
Brydges is funny and even in a big lecture hall, she teaches very well. She's energetic and lots of fun, and I didn't read at all for her class. The material is difficult, but you can get through it if you use the TAs and DLs and do the hw. Review materials and very helpful and she does clicker questions, but it's not mandatory. It helps your final
Everyone was recommending her, but as I took her first midterm, I thought I mastered most of the conceptual and calculating questions, but the grading is EXTREMELY harsh. She doesn't even allow students to have their own procedures, everyone should have the same steps otherwise points will be deducted even the answer is correct. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL.
Literally worst professor for chem 6A. She knows what shes talking about but sucks at relaying the information. All the other profs for 6A only had their midterms on ch. 1-3 and hers was 1-5, which included a majority of the test being on physics concepts. The exam was extremely difficult and not fair at all. Do not recommend her at all.
She's sweet but I would never want her for a professor. Chem6A with her is horrendous. Her lectures are fast-paced, she talks really fast and her tests are excruciatingly hard. She expects you to know the basics of chem in general chemistry already. Would not take her again, don't take her !!!
NGL, can't stand her anymore. Look, basic chemistry shouldn't be as hard as she makes it seem. Her lectures feel pointless when she goes way too fast and only explains theory instead of the practical things we need to know. Also the test grading is ridiculously harsh. Also get an iclicker for participation, I regret not buying it.
Learned more from the book than I did in her class. It felt like the other teachers had tests that were way easier - this is coming from an AP Chem student. Her class was really frustrating at first because it felt like we were learning at a weird order. Lectures are her throwing uncooked spaghetti (for lack of a better word) and hoping it sticks.
Brydges is amazing lecturer. She's definitely capable of keeping a big lecture engaged. However, she speaks insanely fast and expects you to know general chemistry concepts. Tests are also graded harshly. You definitely have to work hard to earn a good grade in Brydges class. There are many other professor whom you can pass their class with ease.
Absolutely terrible professor. Grade is essentially two midterms and the final, all of which are extremely difficult. Pick any other professor for chem 6A if you value your sanity. This is GEN chem yet she expects you to know everything already. Her lectures are too fast and she speaks as if shes talking to other chem professors. 0/10 do not like
Professor Brydges is such an amazing teacher! I would definitely recommend her CHEM 6A class. The homework is quite easy and the class itself is not a lot of work. My advice is to not fall behind since it moves pretty fast towards the end. The midterms were pretty difficult but they were fair. The final was also quite hard. An A is a 87%
Professor Brydges is a good professor! the midterms are pretty easy if you listen in lectures and rewatches the lectures after class. Tip to do well is to study all her clicker question because half of them will be questions for the exams.
Weekly sapling homework! Surprise! It's a general chem class. I personally never paid attention in lectures, but the slides are useful when you cram. Also, she held review sessions before exams.. not TAs... Stacey Brydges held the review sessions. She does speak a bit fast, but when I took this class WI19, I believe lectures were podcasted..
MAKE SURE TO GO TO YOUR DISCUSSION SECTIONS! The lecture moves fast and sometimes is difficult to understand, so your TA will be your best friend. Study the discussion worksheets cause they're similar to the word problems on the tests. The class is pretty okay if you put in the work and she also provides review sessions and is pretty accessible.
Brydges is really really annoying. She goes way too fast in lectures, to the point where I had to rewatch the podcasts multiple times. Homework is nothing like tests or lectures. I like that she hosts review sessions herself. If you get a good TA, that helps A LOT. She offers a lot of extra credit (discussions, clickers), but no final class curve.
Prof Brydges is a good choice if you love to learn. Pros: lecture slides are organized, and her discussion sessions really help you understand the concepts that you didn't get during lectures. Cons: her lectures are very fast, and if you don't have background knowledge on chem, you might suffer. If you want the A, you definitely need to work hard.
Brydges is an engaging and kind professor, and she tried to make lectures fun. She has clicker questions every lecture for participation, and she goes extremely quickly through information. Her tests are difficult, so expect to study a lot before them.
Get ready to learn literally nothing from lecture. The sapling being tough as nails is the cherry on top. If your IA sucks then you're doomed. They should make me a professor for how many hours of sell studying I had to put in.
Very careless and selfish. Her syllabus talks about making students comfortable, yet when I was dealing with a very serious matter she told me to show up or I get a 0, no questions asked. instead of dealing with me when I emailed her, she forwarded my messages to the dean as if I was nobody. she is very ignorant and selfish. absolutely disgusting
Brydges is an amazing professor but you really have to pay attention to her lectures and study guide because in my experience, she tested things that arent completely reflective of the homework. Clicker questions, discussion participation and extra credit help your grade too. As a whole, you can definitely get an A even if you aren' great at chem!
Dr. Brydges is a good lecturer, though her style of lecturing often makes us fall behind schedule. She wants to reward students for their effort (ie. give partial credit on MC portion of the test). She holds review sections, where she discusses questions and compile concept maps that are helpful in preparing for the tests.
She breezes over fundamental concepts and focuses too much a specific and arbitrary concepts in chemistry. Her notes are rarely very direct and hit exactly what you need to know. She cares a lot about her students a lot, but sometimes her policies don't cater to her students as well as she thinks.
She was a good teacher but after experiencing other Chem teachers in this series, she's only mediocre. She seems intimidating but she's a really nice person! I found that it seems that she uses complicated terms and sometimes felt like she was going in circles. However, tests definitely reflect what she taught, for the most part.
I got the COVID-19 version! Dr. Brydges cares so much about her students and she's incredibly passionate about chemistry. She makes an effort to connect what we learn to real examples and to make this experience more bearable for us. Aside from the asynchronous lectures, she has been doing Q&As on the original time and OH... tests kinda hard though
After I received my first midterm (F!!) I almost dropped this class, but luckily she drops your lowest midterm if you do well on your other midterm and final. She speaks quickly during lecture, so print out slides beforehand/use an iPad. Go to discussions and lectures, they really help. If you need more help, you can go to the chem help room.
When I took this class online and had mixed feelings about it. Her lectures are very thorough, however the recorded lectures are much longer than she would have during class time and annoyingly, she posts them throughout the week so you can never get ahead. She gives more assignments than I ever had in other chem classes, such as Capstone project
I took her for Chem 6A and I liked her a lot, so I thought I would feel the same for Chem 6C, but I was wrong. She gave students so much more work than she really needs to (like the research paper for Capstone project). The 3 quizzes were graded super harshly. The lectures and Q&A take so much time and were unfocused for me.
She cares about her students more than any professor I've ever had. There's lots of opportunities for extra credit. Do the Sapling hw and pay attention and you'll be fine.
regrettably, Brydges is one of those teachers that is so smart that her lectures are complicated. Her explanations might work for people who have already learned the topic, but for someone who was learning this fresh new, she definitely made me work harder for my grade. Aside from that, she's super sweet and is definitely accessible out of class.
OMG I just don't understand how she got rated a 3.9... Took her for CHEM6A and really enjoyed her teaching style so I had her for 6C too. She's definitely caring and as long as you do what you should do you're fine! OH is helpful. I love the pre-recorded lectures and Q&A sections because those cleared up a lot of confusions. Definitely recommend!
She makes the topics much more complicated in the lectures than they need to be. Taking notes and following along with the lecture is difficult and sometimes she can be a little passive aggressive if you email her with questions. My tests were usually graded wrong too and I had to submit regrades for almost every one.
Professor Brydges was awesome! She took the time to explain anything that the class was struggling to understand. She was also very accessible outside of class so if there was something that you didn't understand, either her or one of her TAs would help.
During Covid, taking this class did not help my mental state. This was a class where she would make up for the situation with an ungodly amount of busywork. This included a big test every 2 weeks which featured a concept map. Every single map took 5 hours to get a b or c (Most students had these scores). Then a huge poorly explained final. +8hrs:)
Brydges is definitely a nice professor but some of the assignments she makes us do seems more like busy work that you spend so much time working on, and in my opinion it's a waste of time because it doesn't really help you for quizzes and exams.
Brydges is so sweet and caring and an amazing lecturer! She explains topics very well even though they go really into detail and provides lots of examples and practice questions for comprehending! Her prerecorded lectures and slides are organized and easy to follow. Tests extremely representative of the material taught. Amazing professor and class!
I would 100% recommend Dr. Brydges to anyone. Probably the best professor I ever had. Very organized, lectures are very clear, and prepares you well for exams. Loved her teaching style and how she is extremely nice, going out of her way to help students. Class is structured so well! But, you def have to work a lot in this class to get a good grade.
She's a good professor and chem is a hard class but there's lots of busy work so get ready to devote quite a few hours of work to this class. She lectured fine and was very accessible but the questions on the biweekly tests often felt far harder than what we covered in class and practices/ hw. Still, not a bad class overall.
Professor Brydges was a great chem 6A teacher! I took her class virutally during covid and would highly recommend her.
Dr. Brydges is relatively understanding and reasonable, however, as someone who exceled in high school chemistry this course was difficult for me to get through despite going through tutoring sessions in supplement. Her lecture videos is mostly her reading off the slides with some elaboration and the quizzes felt more difficult than necessary.
We had asynchronous lectures and had 3 Q&A session per week. During the q&a's Dr. Brydges would go over practice problems and answer many questions. During discussions you would work with a group to work on more practice problems. Its is very easy to fall behind so it requires consistent work. Quizzes were pretty difficult.
Honestly Professor Brydges is a great teacher and her lectures are fantastic. She grades fairly and I definitely could have put more effort into the class. It's not an easy A but if you work for it you'll definitely do well. Definitely recommend her and this class.
her grading was fair, the concept maps we had to do were nitpicky on the details but were manageable. sometimes it felt like we were given busywork so it is hard to to catch up if you fall behind! one big thing that our i hated was our final it was really vague and hard to understand what we had to do so i failed it but an A is set at 87% so :)
I will say chem is a difficult topic to learn already. This class was pretty difficult and I felt that all the studying I did was not really helpful. Even with that, I somehow got a decent grade. As long as you do well on the final you should be fine. Ms brydges was very lenient this quarter.
Its online so I dont blame her for the class being difficult. In my opinion the concepts are much harder then other Chem6a classes. I didnt take APChem in high school, so all the concepts were really new to me and I didnt understand. The quizzes are open internet but do not take this class if you never took ap Chem before.
She makes us watch podcast lectures before the actual class lecture, but she still seems like a nice person. If you go to her office hours, she will go out of her way to help so that was nice. There were not many extra credit opportunities other than the one for the first midterm.
Great teacher, very respectable and always taught the content that was presented on the tests/quizzes. Very understandable and one of the nicer teachers here at UCSD. Would take any of her classes if she offered any for higher levels of chemistry. Answers any questions asked and very nice.
The order of the material was a bit weird, and I didnt expect us to go into organic chemistry already. She made us prewatch lectures to learn the content and then to a live lecture to answer questions and do examples which is somewhat helpful. It was difficult to learn the material the way it was taught.
Dr. Brydges is an amazing professor. She really cares about her students and does her best to answer any question. The class will require you to watch pre recorded lectures and some readings, but they are manageable. She is also really nice and her grading is fair.
Brydges is nice & cares about her students learning. Lectures are pre-recorded & live sessions are for practice problems. Wouldnt recommend this class if you procrastinate or have difficulty paying attention online. Grading is fair. Some difficult concepts (photoelectric effect, MO theory) covered in exams. Some busy work. Good experience overall.
She is really sweet and kind. I struggled because I didnt love her lecture style and felt I didnt have enough background knowledge. The class starts with difficult concepts that are physics based (i never took physics prior) and in lecture she focused more on what was wrong than what the concepts actually were. Grading scheme was confusing too.
She knows what she is talking about but the way she teaches the class is kind of hard to follow. Online at least you had about 30 min of "lecture videos" before you would attend the "Live Q&A session." You can get by just watching her lectures probably. I found there to be too many learning materials and wish she stuck to one form of teaching
Knowledgeable and responds to questions quickly, lectures recorded. 30 HW questions weekly, 5 tries each. Concept maps graded harsh or easy based on TA. Exams are pulled directly from lectures and not curved. Final consisted of MC section and infographic project. Does not have a clear grading rubric or criteria; did not know the cutoffs.
Overall, a great professor. Explains things very well, but this class is definitely a lot of work if you want a good grade. Tests can be tricky, but if you know the material well, you should be fine.
I took this class cause it was offered remotely. The information was heavy and fast paced, got confused a lot. Managed to get an A but it wasn't easy. Tests were quite hard so I recommend attending office hours!
She really cares a lot about her students and chemistry. However, her lectures and note taking style is extremely dense, disorganized, and hard to follow. Her homework and test questions seem reasonable, but trying to learn the material from her lectures and slides and applying it to the homework is extremely difficult.
Brydges is a great professor until closer to the end of the quarter when she becomes very busy. She was a little hard to get into contact with, but overall loved her class and teaching style. If you have a chance to take 7LM definitely do it because it is so much easier than 7L.
Dr. Brydges was a really good professor for this course, she made the material and lab interesting. However this course is very time consuming with all the lab reports you have to write and additional work, but it is manageable. There was a clear grading criteria and a lot of other things that made up your grade. I really enjoyed taking this class.
The class consists of 3 "learning checks" which are basically midterms. Multiple choice portion is online and free response is in person. The learning checks were pretty straight forward and her practice tests and discussion worksheets were really helpful in preparing for the tests. "Final" is a paper that can replace lowest test grade.
shes nice and all, but there is a very unfortunate downside to her curriculum: lectures are almost always never finished; her slides are rarely covered within the 50 minutes of class and because of that either the remaining material is carried over to the next lecture or you're expected to learn all of it yourself using your own time.
fun, passionate. lectures not disorganized but she has lots to say that dont fit in 50min-sometimes youre expected to go over last few slides on your own. grade's basically midterm, concept map, final. midterm ez, like questions from hw. recommended readings i never did. txtbook can be found on libgen. heard zid's easier, but id take her again
extremely caring teacher-- however i feel like her lecture style is disorganized. with no prior knowledge of physics or chemistry, this class would be difficult.
I agree with others that Professor Brydges' lecture style is slow and disorganized . The physics aspect is where the class speeds up but was still manageable for me. I stopped going to lectures and watched the podcast on 2x speed but she gives sufficient resources for review and seems to care about the wellbeing of her students.
Coolest lecturer ever. Very clear and concise about her material and provides a lot of resources for students to study. Her final grading is also generous and replaces the lowest midterm score.
Dr. Stacey Brydges is a really good professor. She is very caring and helpful. Her teaching style is different and I really liked it. The midterms are really fair and she gives enough review material to do well in them. Overall, she will help you succeed in chemistry.
Prof. Brydges' lecture style is a tad bit disorganized. I agree the physics aspect is where the class speeds up but was still manageable for me, however, I recommend reviewing basic concepts prior to this class. I stopped going to lectures and watched the recorded lectures. She gives sufficient resources for review and please attend office hours!
- Lectures were disorganized and didn't cover majority of material, a lot of self study needed in order to adequately prepare for exams - A lot of resources provided (practice exams, extra office hours, review sessions, etc.) - Structured grading scale - Prof is inflexible
Professor Brydges always makes herself available outside of class to respond to emails, office hours, and review sessions before the midterms and final. Although her lecture slides are a little disorganized and requires a lot of self learning, her tests are a reflection of the practice tests and homework assignments. She is very caring and flexible
Is a good professor but lack of knowledge, everything went well but every time you email her, she disappear. One time I use my Ti84 because it is my only calculator, the professor took it away and cited for academic integrity violation. Horrible professor and never want to see her face again.
Professor Brydges prioritizes her students and keeps them in check about upcoming deadlines. However, lectures can get a bit confusing or hard to follow, so I relied on online resources a lot! She assigns one hw assignment weekly. Midterms are usually based of practice quizzes she post, so do a lot of practice questions. Also, great grading system!
Dr. Brydges is very passionate about chemistry and she is fairly flexible. There are two midterms, so if you don't do good on one of them you can drop the grade. This course is difficult but its more so because of the content than because of the professor. Just make sure to pay attention during lecture and go to the SI sessions/office hours!
Professor Brydges required students to complete at least two concept maps, ten homework assignments (lowest one dropped), and one scientist spotlight. It may be difficult to understand or memorize the laws of general chemistry, especially when she teaches atomic structure or quantum theory. She can be a little behind on lectures as well.
Test material very different from what was taught in lecture, prof is always behind on lectures and is very disorganized. Lots of self studying required, prof lectures and assignments are extremely inadequate and somewhat useless in preparation for tests. Wouldn't bother going to classes at all, better off reading the textbook.
Her class structure aided in some flexibility and room for error. Her lectures were very hard to follow, and she tends to just read off of the slides for her lectures. For the most part I had to go to outside tutoring or get other resources to help me understand her lessons.
She is so so sweet and really cares for her students. But, it is definitely a difficult class. I got a B on the first midterm, A- on the second, and then failed the final; ended with a B+, so not bad but the final was really hard and long. Still, I would take her again because she is so sweet and is a good lecturer.
She makes the class so much harder than it has to be. Instead of following the structure that ALL of the other chem 6a profs use, she does her own thing which makes the class even more confusing than it would be otherwise. The tests are also so difficult for no reason.
- Very hard to stay awake in lectures, pacing too slow, very boring - Needs to focus on the actual material, pause less, be more efficient w/ time - Discussions are wasted on supplemental worksheets rather than legitimate review - If you rlly need chem6a, and her classes are your only option, skip the lectures and watch the recordings at 2x speed
Lots of resources open to students, so take advantage. Lectures got really confusing or hard to follow, so I relied a lot on online resources! Professor Brydges is a great professor, however I wouldn't recommend to someone who hasn't taken chemistry. Her learning curriculum can get tremendously confusing.
Brydges was an amazing professor and lecturer. She makes recorded midterm/final review sessions that are basically the midterm/final and are very helpful. No cheat sheets but she provides the formula sheets and also the test are pretty conceptual. She's a good teacher overall:)
Prof Brydges was ok overall. Compared to other professors, she teaches the toughest concepts like wavelengths and quantum theory first which is tough to keep up with. If you come in only with high school chemistry prepare to study and cry a lot. She records lectures and gives plenty of review sessions for midterms and finals.
She is not for the faint of heart. If you have not taken a high chemistry or just taken it a while ago, you will struggle HARD. I went into this class as a chem major. I am now a history major. The homework was incredibly hard and was not on the notes we took in class. Lecture isnt mandatory but I highly recommend it. Plus midterms are on saturdays
Don't take Brydges for CHEM6 unless you took AP Chem in HS. You need Math 10 to take CHEM 6B and so on. Don't take Chem 6 without also taking a math class. Have to pay $45 to do HW. HW very hard and she won't even teach you how to do it. She didn't teach me anything. She's very nice and offers multiple study sessions. Studying's not affective.
I originally had Brydges for 6A, and thought she could improve a lot in her teaching. She definitely taught the 6C curriculum better, and her lectures were easy to understand. Her tests were on the intermediate levels, but she offered test corrections on the first exam. I personally took her again because I liked the way she structured her class.
As someone who only took Honors Chem in high school, entering her class was extremely hard, I dropped her class and entered a different teacher's class within the first week. The lectures do not correlate to the homework and you must have previous knowledge for it. She seems very nice and well intentioned, but her class is too hard for beginners.
Im trying to save you, just dont take chemistry with her.
Professor Brydges is simply lovely, she is clearly very passionate about not only chemistry, but her students as well. She clearly explains topics and is open to answering questions. I'm hoping to take her class again in the winter. She doesn't do crib sheets but you do get equation sheets. Also no quizzes every week unlike other chem professors.
Please don't take this Stacey for your Chem 6A if you want to pass this class, no cheatsheet for midterms and finals. Homeworks are extremely difficult for no reason, and she combined organic chemistry stuff with general chemistry, expecting us to solve that during the exam.
Professor Brydges is lovely and brings a cheery/calming atmosphere to her teaching. She reminds us to take care of ourselves, explains concepts well, and is happy to explain the concepts during office hours. Her practice exams are representative of the midterms, and finals. Her grading is also very lenient, even on MCQs, giving out partial credit.
Do not take her. If you have another teacher to take for chem 6A, I strongly suggest you take them. She is really bad at teaching math and certain concepts, and her final is extremely hard. Her homework is manageable, but you're going to have to teach yourself everything. I had to rely on youtube videos and outside sources.
Brydges definitely provides the toughest curriculum compared to the other 6A professors, but I will say that she prepares students best for the next chem courses in the 6 series. So what I will suggest is only choose Brydges as a professor if you need to take 6B and 6C. Her class is very doable and well structured, but it takes immense dedication.
Do not take. Compared to other professors, the topics she starts off with are more difficult (I.E. Rydgberg and energy equation, obscure physics stuff). IMO, she should do more basic concepts for an introductory chem course. The worst part is completing 2 useless "art/concept map" projects that are graded harshly. This class was not enjoyable.
Although she is a very sweet person, I would NOT recommend for Chem 6A. There are other professors who are better (Stallings or Schrueimer) because they start from the foundation up to enhance your knowledge in chemistry. With Brydges, she dives straight into the physics aspects of Chemistry and expects you to know a lot. You WILL struggle.
She's a great person who welcomes any questions and loves to connect with her students. Just make sure to also do practice problems outside of class (HW is on the easier side) and really go over her slides and notes to get a solid A. Attend her review sessions, they're genuinely helpful!
Very nice and caring professor who offers help after class, OH, and extra review sessions before exams. Very enthusiastic about the courses she is teaching. BUT this class is hard, she covers quantum mechanics and go in-depth with physics and orbitals that other professors do not. But if you study hard and ask for help, you definitely can succeed!
I took this class for 4 weeks. I used to be a bio mj and am now a business mj. If you don't know anything about Chem before then you will struggle in this class, yet another prof could teach differently. She expects you to come with knowledge and also teaches subj. outside of chem such as physics, OChem, etc. You also have to pay $45 for the hw :/
I would strongly recommend taking one of the other professors such as stallings. She does not go in depth about key topics such as stoichiometry which is key in other chem classes such as 6B.
Dr. Brydges is a great professor who goes through the course content a little differently from others, starting small and going through everything there is to know about atoms before moving on to bulk matter and stoichiometry, which may be off putting to some. She provides lots of good practice material and her tests and grading system is fair.
terrible professor, takes a week to respond to my emails. No support in this class, TAs are just as unhelpful. She does not care. Don't take brydges!!!
Caring and approachable, but tests are tough
teaches concepts but not how to apply them
100% recommend Brydges for those continuing chemistry. Her curriculum is a little more in-depth and can be challenging, but will prepare you for the future. The key to success is utilizing her countless resources-she holds a lot of review sessions and OH's and publishes practice tests that mirror the midterms/finals. She's very nice in person, too.
accused me of cheating on my final, rude to students and very passive aggressive. appears to be approachable, but in reality, she just wants to get the conversation over with. homework is useless and don't take this class unless u have prior chem knowledge. also no cheat sheet on any of the exams!!!
She teaches concepts more than the actual content, which makes the content so confusing. She teaches so many things at once and does not do well at summarizing the important topics that will be on tests. The midterms are pretty challenging and also have free response-questions. I wouldn't pick her as my first choice teacher, but she's alright
Amazing professor! Probably my favorite professor I've had so far at UCSD. Her class is definitely harder than other chemistry classes, but it's absolutely worth it because she makes the material fun and you really learn the material!
her exams were from hw, discus. q's, practice but that made it a little harder to predict whats gonna be on the exam. discus & lec not manda. she does biweekly reviews that help a lot! she does experi. in class sometimes so sit in front if u see stuff in front table, sit close!! i took stalling for 6a. she was harder but I learned more from her.
Brydges starts by teaching the harder concepts first, which causes an unstable foundation for the rest of the quarter. Super nice and bubbly person, but tests were more difficult than other profs and she's more focused on getting you to understand concepts instead of teaching the content. Would take another prof unless you're already good at chem
Had her for 6A, thought she would be the same for 6b. SO WRONG. Doesn't explain content of the class, only cares about conceptual understanding. Her biweekly reviews went downhill, instead of actually reviewing the material she just skims over questions and talks. Doesn't explain the math well, and overall would not recommend
(WI24) Attendance is not mandatory for lecture or discussion. Strong lecturer, and she tries her best to engage with students and share her passion for chemistry. No cheat sheet on midterms/final. Part of the tests is FRQ, unlike other professors (all MCQ). Lower grading curve from the start (88% was the lower bound for an A-).
(FA23) Attendance is not mandatory for lecture or discussion. She seemed very open to feedback, had tons of office hours, and was an engaging lecturer. My main complaint was the lack of a cheat sheet for the midterms/final (which many other chemistry professors allow). However, I like her class overall & chose her again for CHEM6B.
She's the best chem teacher I ever had. She gives loads of practice resources and holds biweekly review sessions online, which are very helpful. Her practice quizzes are perfect for studying for the exams, and she tends to give extra credit for exams.
Brydges covers concepts thoroughly, but the pace and focus on understanding over memorization can be challenging. Utilize her extensive resources like review sessions and practice tests. I found unstuckstudy AI helpful for prep alongside the textbook.
Stacey is a person who does care about her students, however her course and teaching styles were horrible. Most of the concepts you need to self learn. there are also biweekly quizzes that are much harder than what she goes over in lecture, and in the homework readings.
Professor Brydges is very passionate and engaging during the lectures. If you have background Chemistry knowledge then it isn't too bad of a class, otherwise it might be a bit difficult. The discussions are mandatory but the lectures aren't and you have a "learning check" (basically an exam) every 2 weeks.
This class was very hard. Do not take unless you have a good background in chemistry. She teaches like you know it already, so beware. She's not good at explaining and lectures are boring.
Lacking in the teaching department behind on lectures but bases the hw on readings ahead make it make sense honestly just watch YouTube to learn most of the math and the ideas for this class recommend the organic chemistry tutor for learning the work. The study guides are not helpful at all the test have some mixups in the answers to be aware.
My favorite class I've taken at UCSD. She explains the concepts so thoroughly, and emphasizes the connections between the topics. Great professor, especially if you lack prior chem knowledge. Office hours were incredibly helpful as well.
Dr. Brydges is super kind, however, her lectures are super long and her examples aren't always the best. there is a "learning check" (test) every two weeks and the questions are usually harder than the examples she goes over. homework assignments are always due ahead of lectures so you kind of have to teach yourself. discussions mandatory.
This class was the bane of my existence, and it was hard for no reason. The class content consisted of 4 weekly learning checks and a final. The lowest grade gets dropped for everything like the activity, problem solving questions, and exams. On the exams there was multiple choice and written responses. Lecture content heavy and boring at times.
Def one of the best chem professors. Offers up to10% extra credit in easy surveys and readings. Engaging during lectures. 2 hw assignments per week, + 2 discussion worksheets per week. Overall great professor.
Dr. Brydges' lectures are engaging and easy to follow. Dr. Brydges did an amazing job of teaching this course, making over-generalized complex concepts easier to understand. Get ready for group work and lots of reading, which may end up becoming tedious (but still can be good practice). GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS they are extremely helpful.
professor brydges definitely cares about her student and it shows. she provides so many resources outside of lecture that can help you practice and review course material. she also takes time to teach outside of lecture hours, providing many review sessions as well as answers any personal questions you have through piazza which helps soooo much.
When studying for her exams, I basically relied on her recorded lectures only, and practice from the textbook and other outside sources. The e-textbook's explanation on a lot of the topics are not the best, and can be confusing if you have limited knowledge of chem. Her exams were a bit difficult; mostly mcq and a little bit of frq !
She is a very kind-hearted professor and is very flexible in terms of catering to students' needs. It's very obvious that she is passionate about teaching and sharing her knowledge to others.
I really appreciated her lecture style! As someone with a poor chemistry background, she made difficult concepts easier to understand. She would hold regular review sessions especially before tests.
