Very mean
She has no clue what she is doing, and its ashame for all us students!!!!
grades very hard, and not always fair
Extremely difficult teacher but an amazingly intelligent woman. She won't settle for laziness. If you get the chance to sit and talk with her, you should. She is an incredible lady. Very personable underneath her professional shell.
I went to the first day of feminist theory and made the mistake of saying something positive about men in her class.. what a mistake! She was so rude to me the rest of the period that I dropped her class. If you take her be prepared for strident feminism.
Dr. Schlau is the kind of professor that inspires you to excel. She will challenge your assumptions and allow you to discover a whole new way of thinking. It's not an easy grade, but certainly a class where you will grow.
She is very smart and knows her stuff. She runs a basic class where all you gotta do is read and write simple reaction papers. She is awesome and very helpful. One of the best teachers i ever had!
This professor has a serious superiority complex. If you want to talk with her, be prepared to be a passive listener. She is short with you, very opinionated, and at times, quite offensive. I would not take another class with her.
Has a MAJOR superiority complex. If you can't level with her be prepared to drop a class.
schlau is a great prof. very hard, but worth it. she is opinionated because she is BRILLIANT. so deal with it! she is one of my mentors, and is a great feminist role model. Some people do not understand her ways, but they need to learn more patience. A +
At first I was very nervous because she seemed unapproachable. Through the class I have realized that she is an amazing teacher. She knows alot about alot of stuff. It is a tough course but it is interesting and you defintely learn something she makes you
She is very unpersonable and unfriendly. In class discussions, her opinion is always right; she is not open-minded at all. She's a tough grader as well. If you are not an enthusiastic feminist, you should avoid her at all costs.

She is intelligent and knowledgeable, but VERY condescending and arrogant. She might be better in the women's studies classes, but DON'T waste your time taking her spanish class.
She can be very rude, arrogant, opinionated. Hard to please. She may know her stuff -but she treats you as if you know NOTHING about ANYTHING.
I would like to buy her for what I think she's worth and sell her for what SHE thinks she's worth. She may know her subject area, but she's no teacher. She's an intellectual snob.
She was a jerk, but funny.
Do not take her for any class!!!! She thinks she knows it all but she needs to realize she doesn't. In class it's her way and there are no other options. So Please save yourself the headaches all semester by not taking her class. YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!
If you're a sensitive person, beware! even when the skies look blue they can darken quickly. I will say she is very smart; but sometimes that is not enough. If you have her, dont believe the hype. Make your own judgement and give her a chance.

She is very hard but I learned more in her class than any other. If you just want an easy A, avoid her at all costs but if you are genuinely interested in the course you will learn a lot (not promising a good grade though?.
Intelligent, but thinks her opinion is the only one out there. Not personable at all. Condescending doesn't begin to cover it. Take-home midterm and final, but tough questions and real tough grades. Being a feminist or WOS major gets you on her good side. Not worth it unless you love feminism.
All the other reviews are accurate. Definitely would not reccomend her for any class unless you are EXTRAORDINARILY passionate about the subject and you can't take it another semester with another less condescending, helpful, and inspiring professor. That isn't Schlau.
She can SO rude and hard to please. She knows about women's issues, but noone else knows ANYTHING according to her. Her take home midterm and final are impossible! You will never know what she wants to hear, and you can never say anything right. She is an angry feminist! Do NOT take her class.
She is very closed minded and will always try to prove you wrong, she's a 'know it all'. A take home midterm and final, so you better take good notes and make sure you do the tons of reading she assigns.
She assigns tons of reading and gets really mad if you dont do it. Take home midterm was absoulutely impossible! Hard grader ont he 5 reaction papers we had to do... she in in love with C-'s! She is friendly when she wants to be. She harps on the imPerfectons of others. DO NOT TAKE HER! EVERRRR!
she is a very intelligent woman. This course was definitely not easy, but you learn a lot from her. the class was challenging, but also very interesting. if you aren't up for a challenge don't take the course, but i do recomend it. she is a great professor.
She gives ridiculous amounts of reading and the tests are so hard that even if you study you still fail. She is does not care about what you have to say. The only way to pass the class is to think like her and repeat everything she says in class onto your tests. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
prof schlau didn't assign too much work in this class. I hear some of her other courses are hard, but this one isn't too bad. And she's nice.
The hardest Spanish class I have taken so far just because you actually have to think! The tests take a little time to get used to, they are very difficult at first. She is not a bad teacher and is an interesting person! If you are dedicated in learning Spanish you will do well.
She was very hard. She expected us to know everything so she spent very little time teaching anything. The amounts of work and homework she assigns is ridiculous.I dreaded going to her class.
I didnt know what i was getting myself into when i took the class. she does grade pretty hard, but i think its to push you. i started off with a C and now have an A. She is really intelligent but sometimes unclear about what she wants. You have to work somewhat for your grade, go figure! all in all, im glad that i unknowing took the class
This class really helps you open your eyes and analyze different narratives from Latine Am. cultures. She is a very intelligent professor, and demands participation. If you are the type to slack off on classes unless there is a high demand for tests... then dont take her. You discuss stories every class and she will call on you! She is awesome!
Schlau is the type of prof that you have to take and form your own opinion of her. she can be really great, and sometimes intimidating. overall, i never expected to learn as much as i did. i didnt set out to take the class, but in the end i am glad i did. she may be unclear in class, but talk to her, shell warm up.
She is very smart and gives great information about the chosen literature. She demands a lot of work from the student, but it is worth it because she opens you up to new ideas about other cultures/lit genres. I never felt caught up for class because there is a lot of work, but I enjoyed learning from her. Grades tough.
SHE IS THE DEVIL!!!!!! If you're going to listen to anyone on this LISTEN TO ME!!! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!! Hardest class I've ever taken...thought about minoring in Spanish until I took this class...now I want to stab my ****ing eyes out because it would be less painful!!! NOT helpful, NOT cooperative...expects you to already be an expert!!
She's a really tough grader, and even if you usually get good grades in Spanish courses at WCU, she will have no problem completely messing up your GPA. So far no one in my course has gotten a grade above a B+ on any assignment. But she's very smart.
If you're looking for an easy grade, DONT TAKE HER. If you actually want to learn, she's one of the only SPA profs at WCU that pushes her students. If you apply yourself, then she sees it AND your grade shows it. She refuses to give As/Bs to those of us that "always get an A in Spanish." Want to improve your writing style? She's it!
She was a prof for a 3rd world women class a while back. The type of feminist who insists on calling the mail man a "postal carrier" etc etc. Made her feelings about students very evident, was unpleasant, and said I was setting my bar a little high when I asked her to sign a grading report for a transfer to another college. Which I got into btw.
VERY HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her take home mid-term is difficult. Only take this class if it will be your only one. You have 3 books and you have to read almost 25 pages a night for her class. She's nice, but not helpful. There are 5 reaction papers and she is a very very very tough grader on them. If I were you, then I would take someone else.
Schlau assigned way too many readings, 30-60pgs per class, papers are due every two wks, and she's a critical grader, her midterms are impossible, and we also were expected to gather news clippings througout the semester to do a "news analysis" paper. On top of that, its BORING. Oh, and you sit in a circle with a name card out!
seemingly unapproachable, but she is easy to talk to on a one on one basis. She pushes to evoke your highest potential, however she assigns too much readings for a single night. Not the **** most ppl claim her to be, just straight forward. Not an easy A, or C for that matter. But no matter what u will have learned something. Thats a promise
Usually very unclear about work and assignments. Tests are nearly impossible unless you study for hours (literally). 60 vocab a week and plenty of reading. Difficult but you will learn Spanish. NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART.
Instructions tend to be vague but overall she's a great professor. It's hard to get an A but you'll definitely learn from her. She's a lot better than other professors in the Spanish Dept. She pushes you.
Do not take her. Listen to me: Do not take this lady. She does not work with students, made mandatory that we read 4 extremely boring books, sat in a circle with name cards during class. She treated class like grade school students, she is an absolute embarrassment to West Chester University.
Totally not worth taking. More work than I have ever had for any course for my major. Forget your own opinion; write down what SHE says about the readings and spit it back to her on the heinous take-home midterm & final. Most discouraging class I've ever taken. Loved the material; could have been a great class but her attitude ruined it.
Most demanding professor I have ever taken.
She is the most demanding teacher I have ever taken and also the least interesting. She complains every class that we start at 11:02 instead of 11. If i could go back I would have not taken her and i would not reccomend her to anybody.
Horrible teacher. She doesn't follow her syllabus and has something to complain about with every homework you do. She repeats we did not cross the boarder the boarder crossed us at least 2 times a class. That was hundreds of years ago we are in 2011 now grow up
TOUGH TEACHER, but passionate, caring, and gives us TOUGH LOVE. She is brilliant and somewhat harsh, but I love her class and she is one of the best teachers at WCU. She has HIGH EXPECTATIONS that you can meet if you try. It is not easy, but it is worth the effort--I will take her again. SHE WILL NOT PUT UP WITH B.S. so be warned.
I agree with previous student. Dr. Schlau does not like lazy students. She is REALLY TOUGH, yes, but really cares about you learning, and she is helpful if you request help. Also, to the student below, if she repeated "BORDER" in your class so many times, at least you could have learned to write it right!! ha!
She is a nice lady and wants all her students to do well. She does have wkly writing assignments that she wants you to be VERY SPECIFIC on. Include details and you'll get a great grade! If you like discussing and writing and reading (a lot) then this class is for you. Personally, I would take her again in a heartbeat.
An excellent professor with a complete grasp of her subject. I could not recommend a better prof for making the classes both interesting and informative. Dr. Schlau will make you think and encourage you to think.
do NOT take this professor. I barely passed, and I went to almost all her office hours, did the homework, studied, and got a tutor. Nothing helped. She will ask a question in Spanish and if you answer incorrectly, she will badger you! Class was extremely boring--we mostly went over things from the book. GO to class-it helps your grade.
This is not a class for the student looking for an easy ride. You NEED to read the book, you NEED to come to class, and you NEED to pay close attention to what Dra. Schlau says. She does not hand out As. Also, she has good intentions but she does come off as condescending - no one is exempt from that so don't take it personally.
Schlau is not a bad professor, let me say that straightaway. But I couldn't stand being in her class. It was stressful; she's really condescending and impatient most of the time. However, I went to her office hours once at the end of the semester and she was really helpful. So there's my advice: go to her office, and you'll be fine.
One of the worst professors I have had. She is very condescending and rude. When you ask a question she makes you feel dumb. I loved Spanish before taking her class. I did very well in her class but she was horrible. She accuses people of cheating on homework assignments and gives 0's. Overall she was terrible and I wouldn't recommend her.
Love, Love, Love, LOVE this class! Spanish-American writers and poets can be tricky, but Dr. Schlau does a fantastic job breaking it down for you. She's so incredibly intelligent and she's really easy to talk to. Confused? Ask questions! She's not impossible to approach. If you don't ask questions you will only have yourself to blame.
Excellent teacher. Very structured. If you do your homework normally, you will do well and LEARN the language. Lots of repetitions from one class to the next, lots of practice. She's a very nice person who genuinely care for her students. I would definitely take her class again.
I should have went with my gut and dropped the course. She is one of the worst professors I have had at West Chester. She is very rude and makes you not want to participate but you have to because she grades very hard on that. Write down what she says about stories. Give as much detail as possible on weekly writing assignments.
Never had to write a review on here before, but I'm doing this to help people out. AVOID. Worst professor in my years at WCU. You read four books and talk about them, but no matter what answer you give you're wrong unless it's her idea. I could be the author in the back of the room telling her the right answer and she'd still say it's wrong. Waste
She's not all that bad. Overall, I liked her. She's really tough and her course requires a lot of work and thinking, but she's the smartest professor I've ever had. Yes, she's opinionated and obtuse, but you'll learn a lot from her.
Basically every other week a paper is due. Not to mention she is a really hard grader, if you don't agree with her view she takes points off. She gives so much reading! Some times condescending in class. You had better participate willingly or she will surprise call on you. Hard to take notes. Avoid taking her if at all possible!
This class is very hard at first. She is a cold, not genuine person. She knows what she is doing and talking about, but is not very friendly. When you answer a question wrong, she rolls her eyes and makes the students feel stupid. Eventually, you catch onto her sense of humor. Not easy, but not impossible.
Stay far away! I graduated two years ago but a flash back of horror came over me when I thought about this class just now. This woman is nuts. She gets off on knocking down her students. She is condescending and down-right mean. Hurting people hurt people.
Schlau makes learning so difficult. She isn't approachable and is good at making her students feel stupid. She creates an environment not open to asking questions. She assigns so much reading but gets very behind so we don't end up discussing the assigned homework until the week after. I will do everything needed to avoid her in the future.
I learned more in this class than I ever have! She is a really tough professor, gives a lot of reading/homework and expects a lot of her students, but it's worth it. She can sometimes come off as a bit condescending but I don't think she means to. She really wants you to learn and is VERY well versed on the content of the course.
Very difficult grader, unfair and unclear in what she expects. Stifles any other opinions other than her own. Condescending. Take any other class for your culture cluster than this one. A lot of work for little gain. Could easily ruin your GPA.
This professor is said to be a huge feminist, and a great teacher. Yet, she discriminates against every students answer. And it doesn't matter if it's in class, or on an online assignment. She never NEVER gives A's, not matter how hard you work or study. She is awful. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS ESP 333.
I had her as an advisor in the Women's Studies program my freshman year and she was so condescending and rude that I not only refused to take any class she taught, but ended up changing majors entirely because I feared that feminism would forever be ruined for me if all of the profs were like her.
Yeah Schlau is pretty awful. The entire class is discussion based so if you don't learn that way, good luck. She does not give any kind of criteria for assignments except for a few sentences, so if she takes off points you won't know why. Avoid this class unless you absolutely need it, there are easier culture clusters.
Dr. Schau is a great professor. I am learning much more in SPA202 than in my other Spanish classes, mostly because it is a very small class (12 students). She cares about the students learning the material well and if you visit her during office hours she is very helpful. She can be a tough grader, but you will improve in a lot in her class.
I actually really liked taking SPA 315 with Schlau. She is a tough grader, but she has a good sense of humor and she just wants you to learn something. Read the stories and participate in the discussion and you will do well. She is always available for extra help during office hours and she curved exams that were tough. She is a smart prof.
horrible. class doesn't make any sense at all. she is extremely unclear in everything she does, then gets mad when the class doesn't understand. don't expect any english at all in the class. made this class so much harder than it should have been.
SPA 533 is a class that you need to read, participate, and make a final 10-page research paper. IF you ask for help she will do it, but you need to come to class and be prepared otherwise you will not pass. Finally, she is a hard grader but she cares about her students. Don't be intimidate by her class style, just do the work and study.
I heard that she was a terrible professor and no one likes her before I took her spanish advanced reading class. Yes she is a VERY difficult grader and most of the time I second guessed myself but she is very very intelligent and very caring and kind if you are willing to go to her office hours.
Feminist Theories is a wonderful course but Dr. Schlau is a very tough and demanding professor. I really enjoyed her course. She can be quite cutting if she finds you ill-prepared or ignorant.
This was my hardest and most time-consuming class this semester. 5 papers, 3 midterm essays and an in-class short essay midterm, group project, and take-home final that consists of 5 essay questions. Questions are confusing. Gives little reasoning for grades. Very interesting professor but condescending. Take a different prof for culture cluster.
I think SPA202 is a hard class to begin with, but Stacy doesn't make it much easier. She can be really funny but she is super tough and expects everyone in the class to easily understand everything. She's also really intimidating so it's scary when she calls on you in class and you don't know the answer.
Worst teacher Ive had at Wcu in my 4 years here. Acts like she knows everything and you know nothing. Just an all around cranky lady who really shouldn't be teaching at a great university that WCU is.
Spanish 202 is difficult material, but the assignments and homework that Dra. Schlau assigns are meant to help you truly learn the language - not just memorize or translate it. Take her if you sincerely want to learn and are willing to put in the effort. She's very knowledgeable, fair, and organized and she will be there to help you if you ask.
One of the best professors I have had at WCU. Cares a lot about students, but if you are a slacker, be ready to be put on the spot. Do your work, and you will learn a lot in her class. Best Spanish class I have had.
Took this class as a culture cluster because it sounded geniunely interesting. Worst class. Professor was okay but everything was so incredibly hard for no reason. Be prepared to not get an A, NO . MATTER . WHAT. Would not recommend.
I had Dra. Schlau for three classes and they were the hardest of all the classes Ive ever had- BUT I LEARNED SO MUCH! Dra. Schlau has integrity and makes students work hard for their grades. Dont take her class hoping to skate by...
For a professor who espouses feminist ideals, she definitely makes young women in her class feel smaller than anyone ever has before or since. She also has ZERO compassion. Beware of thinking outside the box & sharing, she will not hesitate to humiliate you in front of the class: for example, if you have a unique interpretation of a poem.
