His accent can be hard to understand at times, and usually his voice causes feedback, which is really annoying. He seems organized, but he doesn't explain things in a way that people will understand
Races through lectures at the speed of light. Consistently cancels example questions near the end after spending 15 minutes on them because it didn't work. Leans over the overhead projector and covers up what he's writing. VERY nice guy, but seemed quite shy and nervous and just wasn't that helpful for a course like this.
Prof. Smith? is nice, and his lectures are pretty good. I understand concepts and examples in class, and I find his website to be amusing. :)
At first he was clear, and went through material very well. Farther into the course he started to do examples that didn't make sense, answering problems in ways that are not necessary, and went off tangent. Sometimes he's clear, mostly not.
best math prof i had. willing to help outside of class hours.
He's hilarious - Math profs with a good sense of humour is refreshing! One of my favourites! (AND you actually use the text book you pay for!!)
A good prof. Can talk REALLY fast sometimes. His writing can sometimes be illegible. Notes are good. Has some sense of humour. Material in lectures is relatively easy to understand.
Pretty hilarious guy although he talks too fast and is hard to understand on the spot. You will definitely need to review your notes after class if you want to understand anything at all. Midterms and final were fair, but the marking is ludicrous. Each question is worth only 3-6 points, yet you get full marks removed for the smallest errors. Unfair
Smith? is a great prof hands down. He is always willing to help and has a good sense of humor. Although some of the material is sometimes dry, he tries to make it interesting with neat examples and presentations. He's very fair when it comes to assessments as he wants his students to succeed, and you will if you put in the work. Great prof.
Obsessed with zombies, but that's pretty cool. Can talk really fast sometimes but he is a great prof, easy to do well in his class if you know what you're doing and follow along in class. DGD's really help for this one.
Smith? actually made calculus very interesting with zombies and diseases. He talks a little fast though.
Good prof, but talks a little fast. He makes the first part of the course super easy if you took grade 12 calc. He's helpful and has a good sense of humour, but his final exam was brutal. You usually need to read up on the textbook to understand any of his notes.
Great guy. easy course. 3/4 of the course WAS Gr 12 calc. Enthusiastic about zombies and disease. great humour. Easy to follow/understand if you actually cared to listen and understand gr12 calc.
Smith appears to know the material well, but half the time had trouble explaining it. He would go off on a concept, and then come back to the original one, and would spend lots of time trying to fix his examples because they weren't working, which was very time consuming and confusing.
Funny Australian man!! Pleasure to have him. He was easy to understand and great at teaching. 80% of the course was the easy grade 12 material... i dont see why people are complaining how hard it was. exams and midterms are expected like he said. Just study the assignments and attend the DGDs ended with 100 in the course.
Very enthusiastic about math and zombies. If you took calculus before, the course material is easy. He doesn't always explain everything and he only remembers stuff when someone asks him. He also goes off on tangents a lot (he's had one on tangent). He is helpful though! Oh and don't buy the textbook unless you plan to go to the very bad DGDs.
He was good, but I felt like he didn't prepare us enough for the midterms and finals compared to other profs; even though i got 96% on the midterm. The profs actually make the tests together; so the more yr prof prepares you the better you do. He's nice and approachable during office hours!!! and funny sometimes
Gives out his notes in a package - makes it easier to follow him when he's teaching. May talk quickly at times but is very nice, helpful and cares for his students. Midterm/FSM/Exam are easy if you have gone through his notes thoroughly. Assignments can be tough at times but help understand the content well. DGDs are useless. Recommend this prof!
A really good prof. I find he was the best prof for calculus life science 1... I regretted not having him for sem 2. Although the zombie thing is just plain weird and immature. His notes are awesome and he is really helpful in office hours... Got an A+ and I didn't really work for it. MASTER THE ASSIGNMENTS! Do them 10 times and u will nail exams
I found this to be a pretty easy course. I barely used to textbook. He provides good notes (even though there are some typos). Also, the weekly assignments were more than enough practice for me and I didn't need to do extra Qs from the textbook. His exams are good. They cover the material covered in class & assignments. I would recommend Dr. Smith
Classes are extremely boring and he goes off on random tangents a lot. If there's an option for another professor I'd suggest choosing them over Smith.
Spends more time on talking about diseases and how students need to think about each step on tests than he does actually teaching any math. His fill in the blanks approach is horrid for teaching ODE. Spends too much time on unimportant content.
His ODE notes are way too convoluted (or "complete"), and he makes the class much more difficult than need be. ODE is fairly straightforward but he feels all over the place. Also, his communication about expectations, midterms, etc. is poor and nonexistent on Blackboard. Take the class with Desjardins and you'll be fine.
Assignments are rough and don't reflect examples gone over in class. He left 2 weeks before the second midterm, which was deadly (I thought I understood what was going on..). If you can have another prof, take them! He goes off on tangents about zombies and diseases and loses the students' attention and interest very easily. Not happy.
He made ODE's which should be straight forward, incredibly confusing. His fill in the blank notes stopped me learning properly, he cannot teach off of a chalk board and therefore was useless. He made my semester 20 times harder than it needed to be. Unless you're naturally a genius at math, don't take him. Desjardins all the way!
His exams are definitely tough, and so is his marking scheme. The course itself also has some challenging material, and you have to have a firm grasp of the concepts in order to pass the exams. However, he is very helpful and approachable during office hours, and if you put in some effort, you can definitely get an A.
He is a bad prof as you can judge from his name, half of the time I had no clue what was he talking about. He focuses on a lot of unimportant material and makes so many mistakes in class. Moreover, his faculty approved calculator thing is no joke. Bring the faculty approved calculator to his exam otherwise he will confiscate yours!!!
He talks fast and has the amazing ability of complicating simple ideas. And the book he wrote does not provide you clear and step-by-step explanations. Found an alternative textbook to teach myself the materials.
His explanations were vague, unhelpful and there was really no point in going to class. The class average on the midterm was 30% which shows how bad he was at teaching this course. Final exam wasn't any better either. Be smart and choose another prof.
Great prof and his in-class notes really do help understand the various concpets. Everyone who scares you from the zombie stuff don't believe them; literally only two equations does he bring it up for examples. The man is passionate about zombies! Give him a break! Midterms are fair but exam was tough. Do examples and you'll be fine:)
There's assignments every week which are brutally hard and extremely time-consuming, he claimed the midterm was going to be easier but it was just as hard. This prof wants you to spend a ridiculous amount of time learning the concepts. Don't waste your time, take this course with a different prof.
During classes he just wasted our time by making us copy solutions from the board even though he ends up posting the solutions on blackboard at the end of the semester. He never actually solves problems in class, just mumbles vague unhelpful explanations. Assignments and exams are tough and grading is even tougher. Take this course w another prof
Probably the hardest section, his lecture is very confusing. However he is available outside class, so prepared to spend 5 hours a day doing practice problem if you want to get a good mark.
What was supposed to be an easy class turned out to be the most difficult I've ever taken. Terrible explanations, and I've never been graded more UNFAIRLY in a math class as I was by his TA. Class avg was 30, weekly assignments were impossible. In the end the final had to be easy or else no one would pass. It was also 100% of our mark.
He is a solid prof. His lectures are pretty good, and while they can be a bit all over the place and confusing at times, if you ask him any question at his office hours he is SUPER helpful. You have to work in his class, but if you do you'll do very well!
He is one of the best teachers I have ever taken. I would take his class again. all you need is to practice on your own and you will guarantee the A+ mark. He is not hard but do not miss any class, missing one class will cause you a real mess.
Exams leave you pressed for time and are usually only out of 30 with some questions being worth upwards of 6 marks each
The professor does not make the mobius consistent, he makes it due a random day rather than making it consistent and not announcing when it is due. In addition, this prof never is organized when teaching the lectures, they are all over the place and excepts us to understand the lectures even tho the assignments do not cover that subject.
He is a horrible prof. End of Story.
WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD! Goes too fast in class you don't even know whats going on and you need to go to copy his notes. If you have him, you're pretty much teaching the whole course, and IMO you really do need to work from calc 1. There is a HUGE jump. Half is linear (easy) and half is integrals (hard). If you have a good prof you'll be good.
This was by far my least favourite class usually love mathematics however his teaching strategies are extremely dated and you will be in constant confusion as he doesnt give course updates until last second. Talks way to fast in lectures and is horrible at explaining. Highly recommend avoiding his class at all cost.
Talks way to fast, rarely ever clearly conveys a topic, exams are too long especially after switching to online classes halfway through the course due to pandemic. If youre not that great at math and have this prof I would highly recommend you get a tutor as you will be doing most of the teaching yourself anyways. 11/10 would not take again.
Good guy, but a terrible prof. Although he knows his material, being in his class is very difficult. He speaks too fast, goes through stuff quickly and doesn't give clear explanations. BE PREPARED TO TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING. The course is acc very easy if it was taught by a good prof, but with a prof who can't explain and teach makes it hard.
worst experience ever taking a class hands down - prof was looking for things to fail us on for the final and all of us got robbed. Worked way too hard for a mediocre grade in the course. greasy mushroom.
Material isnt difficult and first two midterms fairly represent what was taught. During the pandemic however, minimal material was left to study online and inaccurately represented what was tested. His reassurance that an A+ can be feasibly obtained with the 100% final feels dishonest. Went in with a 94%, final grade took me off the Deans list.
Final was very unpredictable, but he is extremely approachable and genuinely a nice guy. However, during the COVID-19 crisis he was the least accommodating professor I had; the practice questions and material he did post were not very helpful. No matter how much practice is done, most questions are designed to trick you on the exam.
Makes material way more complicated than it should be. Big mistake taking this course, wish I listened to the reviews. Better off with another prof. Nice guy tho.
Not good. Really not good.
Leaves you to figure things out on your own. Almost always late and didn't show up most of the first month of classes. During the pandemic he didn't put any effort to teach us. Exams are long and tedious, so if your are not fast at math, forget it. The best advice I can give is, if you want to take science, take it somewhere else.
Literally the worst professor I have ever encountered. I usually never write reviews but this guy was surely something. Speaks way too fast and complicates things when they are fairly easy. I respect the amount of knowledge he has but i wish he didnt act as if we knew everything. A lot of mistakes when he tries teaching. Heavily dependent on slides
Never had a math prof not do the questions with us. He used slides that you must fill out so by the time you are done trying to copy it down you haven't really understood what was going on. THE ONLY REASON I passed was because of prep 101. He likes to take life science penalties so watch out. Final exam was deadly.. went from an A to a B!
I can't find my second page dude. Where is it. Now he changed the question, said there was an error. I can't find it. Help me.
Does not tolerate anything. If u submit a file with the wrong name, you get a zero!
Worst prof Ive ever had. Calls himself a genius, but is a horrible prof. Uses slides to teach math. Sadistic nature. For online courses due to COVID, everyone who didnt name their PDF right got a zero on the final midterm mark which was 30% even though that had nothing to do with the actual exam. Very condescending with students.
Disaster for those student who didnt fill in correctly format of file name. Youll get zero for nothing about the actual exam. Practice exam and suggest problem doesnt help at all. Extremely hard for exam even though he said youll be fine if you do practice. Lier! Talking too fast, terrible lecture performance.
Horrible prof, completely intolerant. Seems to enjoy seeing students suffer
The killer who will give you a 0 if you submit the midterm with wrong format of name. Unclear lecture with a lot of contents. Very heavy homework. Extremely difficult exams. If you are expecting a good grade, please never consider about this professor.
His exam was sooooo long and confusing. How tf do u ask vague questions on a final exam for math wtf. Also hes an extremely hard marker, if you deviate from instructions even slightly you get a 0. Insane stress for a typically stress free course.
He simply does not care about his students. God forbid you submit your work with the wrong title or forget the question mark he added to his name to feel special.
It was a pleasure do to the course with professor Smith, even during summer. He's lectures are engaging. He gives many assignments and practice problems which is very useful if you want to have good grades and learn something. He's very calm, patient and he cares a lot about students. He's definitely one of my favorite professors at uOttawa.
Don't let his first lecture deceive you, this prof is terrible. Take the class with legit ANYONE else. I like calc and he managed to turn a subject I love into some kind of dreadful mess. His personality is downright inappropriate, very full of himself
she really wants you to do well. just come to class and practice like she says. lectures reflect what you'll be tested on. she stays after class and answers EVERY students question.
She's really understanding that understanding the material can happen after the midterm has already passed. She usually gives the option of your next midterm overriding the last one if you do better. Her classes are actually quite fun if you participate as she makes great jokes! One of the better profs I've had!
Dr. Smith? was such an amazing professor. She really cares about you learning (instead of memorizing formulas). Super inspiring for science students! One thing is that your grades only come from midterms and there was a 60% final, but she tries to make your grade the best it can be. Write in the chat if you're on zoom, she loves the participation!
Professor Dr Stacey Smith? was an amazing prof. She had tons of enthusiasm even at the 8:30 am lectures. She answered all questions thoroughly, gave tons of practice problems and was a very fair marker. She was one of the only profs that cared about improvement throughout the year and gave you chances. However, you have to practice a lot.
Dr. Smith? was a really great math prof. She really engaged with students and made math feel relatable to real life. Midterms were tough but she gives you everything you need to succeed. Very fair and understanding. Always there to answer questions and genuinely wants the best for her students.
Dr. Smith? is one of the most caring profs I've ever had. She genuinely cares about her students' success. She answered every question and was very engaging throughout class time; I definitely felt seen and heard in that class. She also gives practical tips on how to succeed in her class. Do those practice problems and you'll be good.
Challenging class, but Dr. Smith? does her utmost to make it understandable and enjoyable. She tries to give students lots of opportunities to succeed. Midterms were difficult, but fair. Do lots of practice and attend the lectures and you should be fine.
Stacey Smith? really cares about her students and their grades. She gives lots of chances to improve grades and takes time to actually give good answers in class and takes every question seriously. Would recommend her to everyone, even people who suck at math and hate it because she really does make it a little more interesting.
Lectures are interesting and she interacts with her students during them. She cares for all students and gives everyone their best chance to get the best mark they can. There was no assigned homework so its all on you to practice outside of class time.
Stacey Smith? is a very good teacher, she cares about her students and allow a lot of opportunities to improve your grades. practice a lot and you'll do great in this class don't leave all your studying last minute.
This prof is the hardest marker Ive ever had. The whole class is based off the textbook and they are not invested in helping you succeed at all. Their expectations are not clear whatsoever and the prof is very unprofessional. I will avoid this professor for the rest of my university career.
The first thing she tells you is that her job is not to teach and I'm assuming it's because she's tenured. that in itself should tell you what kind of prof she is. her course material barely reflects what you get in her assessments and what's supposed to be a straightforward course is the opposite with her. avoid her if you can, for your own sake.
She is a great prof, but the class is harder than the average class. (you need to learn and understand many different ode methods and numerics methods)
As a person, I liked Prof. Smith?, but as a teacher, she was pretty unclear and had a tendency to overcomplicate things. TO be completely honest, I had to watch Khan Academy after her lectures which is kind of sad (as we are paying for the lectures, in theory). I am also not sure why we had 7 assignments, that was a bit overkill.
You need to put in the work but if you do, the course is straightforward. There is no bell curve. Lectures are clear and useful.
Her explanations are not very good because the calculations seem so basic to her. Also talks very fast and simply shows the calculations on the screen instead of writing anything out. However, she is very nice and is passionate about math. The numerics part of this course is 10x harder than the ODE part. Choose another professor for less stress.
Great person. Horrible Professor.
Dr. Smith? made ODE and NM harder than it needs to be. She is a pro in this field, but she doesn't know the threshold of undergraduate students. She turned Laplace transform into a nightmare and make you do very high order numeric methods. The final exam is easier than the midterm. But she is an absolute genius. Very clear in speaking.
This is my 3rd time taking this course over the last 2.5 decades (guess I just ID-ed myself). Didn't feel any easier but at least I got a solid 'pass' this time around. Spent on average 10+ hours/week on homework. Midterm was more difficult than the final. Tons of practice problems available. Prof was quirky but would take another class with her.
Go to class and do the assignments and all the practice problems! Easy A if you actually do the assignment and practice 10 questions per day. No surprises on midterms and finals.
Great prof! Easy going!
One of the toughest graders I have ever seen. Worst course I have ever taken up until now.
I really enjoyed this prof and would highly recommend her for anyone thinking of taking her class. She cares about her students and even changes up the marking scheme to give you the best mark possible. Tests were all MC on BS since I had her online, and they reflected the course material. If you practice every day, you will do well in the class.
You will appreciate Smiths? lectures if you are looking to understand the "why" of math concepts. She loves answering questions and is very enthusiastic about teaching math. She goes through examples by hand, which is great. This being said, many examples shown in class are relatively easy compared to the exams. I did not feel prepared for exams.
Dr.Smith? is such a nice prof(base what she said) that gives us a lot of questions to do and all the things talk about from lectures have really big difference compared to the midterm and final, sample midterm and final questions help nothing, but at least it gives 1% of idea what gonna be up on the test paper.btw, be ready to see her amazing smile
Makes the course way harder than necessary and the extremely low class average was a clear representation of this. Retook the course with Dejardins and ended up with an A+. The only course I have failed in my 3 years of engineering at UOttawa. The lectures and assignments are in no way a representation of what is covered on the midterms and exams.
Horrible Professor, Lectures and assignments have 0 correlation to the questions on the midterms and exams. If you value your GPA avoid smith at all costs. Her excuse for students not doing well in the course was that not enough students attended the additional office hours. As you'll notice most of smiths reviews are 1 star. Worst professor!
Tests are nothing like the lectures. Only reason I did somewhat decent in this course was because I learned everything from khan academy and youtube. Spent countless hours on this course as Smith? is clearly not a capable professor. This is a tough course but Smiths incompetence as a professor makes it 10 times harder. Avoid her at all costs!!!!!!!
She didn't answer questions in class, rather she watched our hands raised and still ignored us countless times. Later in the course, there are no textbook problems to help study so good luck. She is more focused on a disease problem that makes no sense with how fast she skips slides expecting you to have written it down in 5 seconds. RIP GPA :)
Tips for success in Dr Smith?'s class: she may give you bonus marks if you do the assignments in groups. On the exams, she asks students to write a paragraph explaining the advantages/disadvantages of using a particular mathematical method, so be ready to do so. The exams are excessively long so practice solving problems fast.
I took her for Calculus for Life Science II after doing well in the last one, what she teaches in the class and the few questions she gives for homework are nothing compared to her midterms or final. This class will tank your GPA and might be better to retake it with a different proof.
I got an A+ in 1330, attended all the lectures but I'll be shocked if I even get a D. I have ever had less than an A in anything math related. I had to teach myself everything. If you fail the final, you fail the course regardless of midterm grades. Everything is heavily weighted, exam questions are nothing like examples Just glad it's finally over
The really Strict scoring mechanism. If you do not get the correct final answer for question, you will only get 1 or 2 marks. Such an easy course won't get you high marks. Just avoid this professor
Made the course way harder than it had to be. She always manages to find the thing that she talked about the least and than make the test half about that. Every time you see something in the notes and think "thats not going to be on the midterm, we barely talked about that", thats what she will make half the midterm on.
The exams and material learned in class class not match up.
Stacey is the absolute worst professor you could ever imagine. She does not care about her students. I had to drop the class after the psycho she was with the first midterm. Stacey DEDUCTS marks for the wrong answer and laughs in your face when you ask for help. Never have I ever in my years of uni have I ever felt so ridiculed and belittled!
Terrible professor, avoid at all costs!
If possible, take any other professor. Her practice midterms and final were not at all similar to the actual tests. She didn't explain answers and assumed that everyone knew the things she was talking about already, even though we aren't PhD math professors. I don't think I know anyone who did well in her class.
There arent enough words in the English language to describe how bad this professor was.
Cares more about the question mark supposedly in their name than actually teaching students.
Students had to learn the class content outside of class and do practice in class (flipped classroom). She didn't give good content to learn from (just brief notes on topics), and despite this got upset when no one did the work outside of class. Regardless she is a good person and nice when you ask questions.
Professor Smith? really drained me mentally. Her exams are incredibly tricky, with traps even in questions that seem simple to solve. She believes studying should be hard, but she complicates things unnecessarily and seems indifferent to most of us failing. Avoid her if you can.
Avoid this professor if possible. The class is extremely challenging, with midterms and finals that bear little resemblance to the course material. Engage with unstuck study and other study tools to survive this course.
Avoid this professor at all cost.
Made calculus harder than it is. Not good at explaining. Felt very overwhelmed. RUN!!
Never before have i met a professor who contributes so little to society. Im fact, I believe she is actively contributing to the downfall of her students hopes and dreams. If you want to be taught find another professor who isn't so arrogant and demeaning. She shoves her greasy little fingers into your soul and destroys it. proof? her exam
Lectures made no sense, hard to understand lwk mubles her words. I was self teaching bc she cant explain w/o convoluting her ideas. made multiple typos of practice questions and corrected them the night before the midterm. SHE CARES TOO MUCH ABOUT YOUR CALCULATOR. tbh theres better profs like Dr Khoury or Dr Dejardins.
Best wishes to anyone who has to take her class.
AVOID IF YOU CAN??We don't have lectures as they are offensive, I spent 32 hours a week studying for this and still am falling behind. Cares more about her question mark than her students. Took away calculator because it was illegal and wasn't written in the syllabus because the syllabus covers more about her question mark then the material.
MAT 1332 is a GPA killer. Im sorry to anyone who has to take this course. :(
Overall was awful. Cared more about people being in groups than trying to help you. Doesn't actually teach, more so makes you watch a 20min broad video of the lesson and expects you to be able to solve a hard question in class. When you try to ask a question, she just says you didn't watch her vids beforehand. Had to self-teach all semester.
Just finished the final exam, and I can say for certain this was the worst prof I have ever had. The midterms weren't great, but if you studied well you could definitely pass. Final exam was absolutely horrible especially for this class, everyone coming out of it thought they failed. If you get her as a prof, drop right away, don't even bother.
Taught using a flipped classroom style teaching, had to watch videos before class and do group practice during class, but she didn't expect us to ace the material before practice and was willing to answer questions. The teaching method didn't work well for me, but it was the second year she does this style and she was open to criticism to improve.
I have no idea how this prof even passed his interview to get this position. Offensive, arrogant, condescending and to top it all off is actually terrible at teaching. Had to self study for the course before deciding to drop it.
Empathetic
Worst professor ever, avoid his classes if possible.
I found professor Smith's teaching difficult and unhelpful. "Lectures" consisted of group work on questions she would put on the board and expect us to know based on a broad video posted. I often felt discouraged by interacting with her and basically taught myself the course and depended on YouTube videos to survive. I do not recommend.
Drop the class!!!!!
STAY AWAY!!!! MAT 1332 is already a difficult course and she did not make it any easier. The first midterm was okay. The second midterm and final were horrendous. Prof is nice but is very unhelpful when it comes to answering questions. I'm retaking the course rn with Dr. Rada and comparatively her lecture slides are terrible and overcomplicated.
For your own mental health don't take her in any class.
I do not recommend Stacey Smith? I could never get along with her teaching style and the materials were not to the point at all. Her grading is harsh and incoherent, especially when you ask for clarifications. You'll get personally targeted but very little feedback on the work itself.
Run she's terrible
terrible. never trust a professor who has a question mark in his last name.
Horrible professor everything is independent learning doesn't even teach you're better off taking in the summer almost the whole class failed.
Genuinely the worst professor I ever had. Half the class failed this course because she couldn't be bothered to teach and instead would make a video briefly explaining concepts. Basically forced us to learn the whole course on our own. Midterms and final were hell and there were no assignments to boost grade.
