She is an aight teacher, you can take if you want because last semester was her first semester teaching Chemistry in college after 10 years.
She was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I did so bad in her class and tried so hard.
Tests were long and difficult. She covered material way too quickly so that there just wasn't enough time to absorb it all. I studied for at least 12 hours a week outside of this class and never got above a C on a test even with the curve. The class average was about a 50 percent. I do not recommend her.
She was a very hard teacher. She didn't know what she was doing. She used to be a chemist so she would teach the class as if they were about to graduate as chemist's. She used shortcuts and didn't show how to do the work. She went to fast and was never prepared. Always came to lab and then read what we we're doing. Wouldn't recommend her.
Teaches the class like you're in Grad school instead of an intro class. Goes way too fast and is really confusing. She's also a lab nazi. It was the first class I ever dropped after two years-would not suggest taking this professor
One of the best teachers I've had so far. But to pass her class you must take the material seriously. Not at all dificult just know how to apply formulas that she gives you and with a little memorization you will do well. I got a 'B' and I did not even take the final. (with my class she dropped a test).
To smart to be teaching intro. Very difficult to keep up with. Teaches class as though you know the basics. The only good thing was that her curves were huge! Class average was a very low F, but with the curve it was a C. Tests were 10 questions, that took more than the class period to finish. Do not recommend this professor.
her lectures are a little confusing, but she curves a lot and she tells you exactly what will be on the tests. most of the time I studied the day before or the day of the tests and I got an A in both chm 1&2
She is a tough teacher but also an intelligent one. She offers to help you if you need it. The tests are pretty hard though. As long as you pay attention in class and follow the examples you really shouldn't need to study. But, if you miss a class or something, you better work hard to get everything straight. If you like chem yes otherwise no.
thomson is a good teacher. you just have to stay on her good side. she doesnt like any bull crap but she knows what shes talking about. she was out there working in the field and is teaching a majors course so she doesnt have time for our incompetence. if you cant hack it DROP THE CLASS!
Warning!! This is not an Intro class!! You must possess a certain amount of Chem knowledge to pass this class. Dr Thomson is a tough teacher, the tests are hard and she teaches at the Grad chem level. You must studying, stay ahead, and ask for extra help. The lab is fast paced, and you must ask her for help or none will be given. Good luck!!!
This class was the hardest I have ever taken. granted I do not like chem, but even for chem majors it was difficult. Thomson does not give any breaks along the way and her tests are very hard. It was total torture. for those of you who are not good math students BEWARE.
HOLY GOD this is a good teacher. She tells you exactly what is going to be on the test and practically gives you an A because your idiot classmates curve your grade so much. Good luck in university!
Had her for CHM I and II. She is a tough teacher but very intelligent. Test are half "theoretical MC". Makes knowing what exactly will be on MC portion difficult. Does curve good in lec and Lab. Has part of syllabus stating if your grades improve with each test, final can count as semster grade.Would recommend but prepared to study. No graded HW
very helpful. very straight forward, no nonsense. plan on staying with this professor for remainder of chem. (chem I & II)
very helpful. straight forward
The hardest class I have ever taken. Harder than any university class. She actually makes the class harder than it really is. She has a knack for confusing you. In the lab, you are basically on your own. The only good part of the class was that she curved the tests well. Horrible.
I've only taken intro so far but I thought she was a great teacher. She always responded to my emails whenever I asked for help and she was always very helpful in answering my questions about homework. I got an A and math is not my subject. As long as you are diligent with your assignments and studying and ask for help when needed you'll do fine.
Absolutely one of the best teachers I've ever had, and that includes profs all the way through master's level courses. She'll go out of her way to help you understand topics, but you have to put in the effort too. She makes the courses interesting and fun. I wish she taught more courses!
Great professor, I would recommend her to everyone that wants to learn this subject. You will know your chemistry when you leave her class.
Great professor! Her grading scale is amazing. Anything above a 50% is passing. She moves fast, but as long as you attend every class, you'll be fine. Strongly recommend.
Tough class and here test are all write-them-out for 50 pt then 50pt on multiple choice
teaches what you need to know for college level tests such as PCAT. Textbook is HORRIBLE. Better off purchasing Organic for Dummies used it all semester
teaches what you need for further college level tests such as pcat. Textbook so bad used organic for dummies entire semester to pass. got and A
Don't recommended to take her class. Did not learned anything from the class. Dr. Thomson just reads off the power points lecture notes. Does not give problem examples. Students pass her classes by paid online test-bank. 50% test questions came from the test bank.
She's actually the best professor I've ever had. She's very helpful and explains everything clearly. If you study and try your best in understanding, you will get a good grade. I recommend her! She's funny too :D
Professor Thomson is always available for additional explanations. Lecture is fast so be ready to take notes. Online homework is time consuming, tests are hard.
Professor Thomsom is someone who is passionate about chemistry and is quite quirky in her own way. She talkes very fast and jumps back and forth within the chapter. Her tests are a bit tricky but use the review questions in the back if the book to help study. This is a hard class but pay attention and do online homework and you should be good.
Thomson is a tough teacher. She knows the subject extremely well but tends to teach as though the students know it like she does. You can receive a good grade in the class if you are extremely dedicated and do not get frustrated easily. Requires ALOT of study time. Her tests are half mult. choice half write out and the multiple choice Qs are tricks
Teaches like you already know it. Sloppy handwriting and hard to follow notes. Very hard class and she does not make it easier but harder. Do not take her.
Get 2 notebooks for home, 1 for theory, 1 for problems. As you read the chapter, write each section heading in both note books. take notes as you read, i.e, bolded definitions, relevant formulas, etc., in your theory notebook; work the example problems in your other notebook. Rework lecture problems. Rework HW problems. Ask questions. Good Luck!
shes nice person but is not the best teacher. does the examples on board very fast without explaining, i asked her to explain once but very unclear answer. tests are tricky. get ready to read the whole chem book. that what i have to do. will be driving an hour next semester to take chem 2 with another teacher. dont take her if u rely on ur teachers
You can learn a lot in this class on your own if you read the book, but she doesn't explain things well when she is lecturing. She doesn't move out the way when you take note. She won't explain something that she didn't teach and expect us to know everything about chemistry.
Not a good teacher. Teaches as if we already know the stuff. Very inconsistent with grading assignments. You can ask for help, but dont expect her response to help. It usually makes me even more confused. Long lectures with dry jokes. In lab she does not help you with the questions. make sure u have the book cause be ready to teach urself everythin
Dont expect any help in lab, but do expect to teach yourself everything.
Very rigorous. Only recommend to science majors.
If u must take chemistry, do not take it with Thomson. She does not explain things well, and if you ask her a question, her answer will make you even more confused than before. If your failing, she will do very little to help. She will never go out of her way. You can only expect help if it requires little to no effort on her part. good luck.
Very hard exams. Although they might be easier if the teacher tought you the material. Goes through things very fast. Test is half workout hald multiple choice. She does a few workouts on board but multiple choice stuff is on u gotta read textbook and memorize if interested in passing. Cause she wont help. At all.
You have to actually study and try for this class, which I don't mind since chemistry is part of my major. She might go through things a bit fast, but you can always ask for help by email or her office hours or just read the book and do problems with their examples and you should be fine. I'm currently taking her again for Chem 2
She's a very good teacher. Explains things well, sticks to the schedule, doesn't give out too much homework, and designed it to help you pass. Keep in mind it is CHEMISTRY you HAVE to study almost every other day if you want to pass and she's always there to help. As long as you pass ONE test and do the homework, you pass the class. read the book
Shes tough. currently talking her for chem 2, i barely passed chem 1. her exams are ridiculous. half workour half multiple choice. we do the workout problems in class but the multiple choice is on us. would not recommend to anyone.
she hates helping people. LITERALLY the worst teacher i ever had. does not care about the students. the test are really difficult. she only covers about half the material that is on the exam.
Do not buy the textbook she assigns, purchase a real one. Learn the material and do your homework in advance as it is sometimes due before she finishes "teaching" it. Your grade is completely subject to her opinions on your growth as a student which change erratically. Wait to attend a University before taking this course.
Dr. Thomson is a very good teacher. However be prepared you are taking CHEMISTRY which is hard subject. If you don't understand something in the lecture she is easily approachable for help. TAKE NOTES and study alot. You have to be proactive to get a good grade. I am planning to take her for all my chem classes I need including organic if offered
Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. Don't be scared guys, it's Chemistry, it's not going to be easy. She is also tough on us students. But if you go to class, pay attention, actually participate and ask questions, and do ALL THE HOMEWORK AND STUDY (kind of like you're supposed to), you'll get through and actually UNDERSTAND the material.
Unless you have profound background experience in chemistry, you will not understand. Took chem in high school, passed with flying colors and I'm failing her class. The way she teaches are impossible to comprehend. Your only chance is to self-teach
Half of her tests are multiple choice, the other half are work out problems, and there are 10 points extra credit on the tests. If you show a progression on test grades, she will use your final test as your final grade. All of the test work out problems are either done in class, or are in the back of the book. Write down the problems on the board.
Dr. Thomson is a very good Introductory Chemistry professor. She will help you when you ask for it and she makes jokes during her lectures. Her lectures consist of her explaining verbally and literarily in front of a white board. The only problems I had with her was that she would talk and do problems too fast on the board and it was sometimes hard to keep up, and for the lab that goes with the class, she would change the procedure for the experiments the day of and you were expected to change your written experiment procedure or risk losing a few points.
Let me start off by saying DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE EXCELLENT CHEMISTRY BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE. Seriously I withdrew because her material was SO tough. Half of her tests are multiple choice, other half was write out. She goes super fast and expects you to know everything after she just finished. HARDEST CLASS EVERRRRRRR
I had her for Introductory Chemistry and plan on taking her for my other chem courses at PHSC. She really cares about the future of each kid and wants to see them pass. One thing that she stresses is to NOT take Chemistry 1 before taking Introductory Chemistry, it's needed to prepare you for Chem 1. This is chemistry though, you have to study.
This class had me dreaming in chemistry. It was highly stressful material, and she is EXTREMELY critical of every detail. She takes off points for every single detail. I loved her teaching- but you have to pay attention! WRITE every single thing down, practice all the examples she gives over and over and you will do great. Curves a lot and 50% drop
Stacey Thomson is an excellent professor. Her courses are difficult but she is always willing to help you when you are struggling. She is a very tough grader so you have to know everything. I dropped her into to chem course because I wasn't prepared for what came with it. I am going to take it again with her.
Very tough class even as intro. To solidify the lecture concepts, read the textbook thoroughly and practice the example problems. Go over the tests before you hand it in, often times, a simple error can cost you a major deduction. Lab isn't any easier, best to come to lab prepared with all questions in the report answered prior. A real struggle.
Easily the HARDEST course I've ever had. However, She is a true college professor! I passed Highschool Chem, College Anatomy and College Biology all with A+'s but I'm barely passing even with her curve (Which is a crazy curve a 55 is a C, 70 is a B). MAKE SURE YOU STUDY!! Practice the problems over and over again or else you'll be lost on her test.
After speaking with others who've taken Prof. Thomson, I've come to a conclusion: "science people" or at least quantitative/analytical people (like me) absolutely thrive in her classes, and those of a less analytical bent struggle more than normal. She teaches chem very much from a working analytical chemist's perspective - keep that in mind.
She was nice as a person, lacks teaching skills. I will never take this prof. again, I was considering majoring in chem. before this class. If you're good at math you'll do well. She has a crazy curve that differs each exam. Takes points off for work out problems on test, not all mc. Doesn't provide study guides or help when needed, teach yourself.
Loves to give criticism on discussions, but not constructively. I know everything I've done wrong but have no way of knowing how it can be done better.
90% of her lectures are workout problems that's she's presolved. She writes the problem so fast on the board and then erases it before you have a chance to ask a question. While most of the lectures are workout problems, her tests have strange conceptual problems that were never discussed.
While, I was somewhat bitter about her manner of teaching and harsh grading; I would recommend this professor to one who genuinely wishes to learn Chemistry. She teaches in such a way that you are forced to learn the material. Her method of solving problems is far superior to learning 500 plug-and-chug equations. Dr. Thomson is a solid choice.
What was I thinking when I took this class may I add by saying she doesn't show you anything you have to figure it out by yourself. The labs are fun but the work in the text books are difficult. I just hope whom ever decide to take this class is very good at math and figuring things out . I would not recommen this teacher . She will help you if ask
Im retaking this class at a University & have an A in the course. I can honestly say that Thomson's class was significantly harder. She even told me she felt insecure about not teaching at a University. Which is why I believe she made the class far harder than it shouldve been, at an undergrad level. Class began with 60 people, & finished with 8.
Dropped her class as it started! Was taking this class for PSC1121 This is class is beyond difficult and I love science. Her class work is set up as if you were a chemist this class is not chemistry. RUN DON'T WALK this class is Horrible!! Her syllabus questions required half a page writing so get ready to write and research!! Many people dropped
Hard is not the word she has a weird grade curve that makes the whole class get a C , she teaches like she is at a University , I do not recommend her at all. If happen to get her wait for a better professor before you pick this one. Plus everyone needs to be honest about rating this professors instead of sugar coating them.
Lectures are just workout problems, but she doesnt put question on board, notes dont make sense. Teaches like we all have degrees in chemistry already. Rude and sarcastic, doesnt provide useful feedback when you ask for help. Would not recommend this class to another student AT ALL
Incredibly difficult class. Harsh grading.
If you genuinely want a good grade in the class, do NOT take Chem with Professor Thomson. I loved chemistry in high school and she made me absolutely turn the other way. Writes problems on the board but solves them before you even get the chance to try. Tests are on Chemistry 1 topics, so you go in blind. Student count dropped more than 60% by end.
Dr. Thomsons lectures honestly had me constantly confused. Her grading criteria is a mess and she very nit picky with answers. If a question isnt answered the way she wants it, you will be wrong. If biology is more your strength, you will struggle in her class.
I don't know what all the complaints are about. I had Dr. Thomson for intro Chem and Chem 1. I think she's great. The class is almost entirely working out problems on the board. I appreciate how seriously she takes the subject. It's a hard class, make no mistake, but she does a fine job teaching it. Variable grade scales (never to your detriment).
Took her over the summer online. 10 mini-quizzes that are 5 questions each multiple-choice. 4 tests that are 50 questions multiple-choice. You can find all the answers online. Take this pandemic into your favor and take her online for an elective credit because she is very easy online.
ONLINE she's hard on discussions. did my best but she would criticize heavy on my ideas quizzes are easy, 5 questions basically on quizlet, there 4 50 questions Test. also on quizlet, some q's aren't but just google them. Pretty easy tho. passed w/o the book. overall easy A really. would've gotten A but the discussions :/
She was great, she explains things well though it does get pretty confusing. (I mean its chem) I passed with a C and she rounds up grades based on the class average, so everyone I was friends with passed her class. she cares, which is hard to find these days. Take her!
I have never had this much trouble in a science class. Dr. Thomson is lecture heavy, all classes are filled with workout problems that she writes down, she does not explain how she gets to answers. To add to that she does not record lectures. She is also sarcastic and assumes every student knows everything about chemistry already.
Worst professor I have had during my first few years of college. Do not take her online as she takes 1-2 weeks to grade one assignment and is a very hard and bad grader. She is not clear with her topics and will nitpick everything about your response. She gives little to no feedback and it seems clear to me that she is lazy.
60 credits and perfect GPA in every course, until now. She is sarcastic and doesnt take the time make sure you understand. Always states youre college students so figure it out. Feedback on incorrect answers are not helpful. Barely accessible and takes forever to check messages and grading. Listen to our comments, take this course elsewhere.
If you have no previous knowledge of chem or are planning on majoring in chem, avoid this prof. She expects everyone to know what's going on always. If you have a ? forget about a direct answer outside of class. She does the problems before you even realize what's going on. Then just builds on it. Tests are impossible to ace. Zoom class. AVOID.
Straight As my entire life until this, getting a C in an INTRO class. Mind you I took chemistry in high school. She grades way too hard and doesnt teach the same difficulty of content she tests you on. If you take this professor get ready to teach yourself. Didnt even learn anything. Maybe its an online thing, but she just isnt doing it right.
Don't ask questions during lecture, you will get a snarky response and made to feel stupid. The only thing helpful is that there is a curve on the grades based on class average (no averages were ever an actual passing grade). Very nit picky grader. The one time I reached out, I did not get a response until 5 days later when I emailed again.
I am not usually one to go off on a teacher but Dr. Thompson is an exception. This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I took this INTRO chem class and understood nothing. Her lectures make absolutely no sense so be prepared to teach yourself, none of the material she teaches is on the homework nor the tests. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!
If you're looking to take prof thomson as a zoom class for Intro Chem, do not do it. This teacher doesn't record lectures, moves on really quickly and will expect you to just understand. You can't record lectures yourself and if you don't do it her way on the test you will not get credit, if you don't show work no credit. Don't take her please.
I am have never gotten a C until this class, I am pretty advanced in math courses and thought this would be a breeze, it was definitely not, don't ask questions because she will make you feel dumb, and be prepared to think you know all of the material that will be on the test and get a 50%, the only helpful thing was her curves which were 5% - 10%
Without a doubt, she was the toughest grader I've had. I am a straight A student. However, I can't imagine myself getting an A in her class. She is really difficult when it comes to grading your tests (the tests are pretty much 80% of your grade if not higher). She is well respected, does respond to emails and tries her best to answer your question
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COST. I have been getting A's all through out college until I took her chem 1&2 with lab. She grades very difficult and her hand writing is so bad you cant understand her notes. On tests, if you do work your way you fail, everything must be her way. She does not even teach in lab, expects you to know everything. Avoid.
Teacher is very test heavy, with tests being 70% of the grade, with barely any homework to cover you. Expect to take 20 question test, with one written question being worth 25-30 points. If you don't do it her way, expect to get it wrong. Very snarky and can make you feel stupid. No clear way to pass honestly, class avg was around a 60-70%.
This the worst prof Ive had my whole life. I barely passed this class and Im a straight A student. She made me scared of chemistry in the future. Im now at USF taking chem 1 and I got a 100 on my first exam. Dont let this horrible professor scare you. Shes the problem not you. Do not take her at any cost. Just wait for another prof.
Hardest class I have ever taken. An intro class should not be this hard. I've always been really good at chemistry, but this class made me think otherwise. She grades tests based on work. You could have the right answer, but if you didn't do the work her way, then it's incorrect. Tests are always curved because of how low the class average is.
Hey Chen 1 class is a TON of work. Very time consuming considering you have to be absolutely perfect on the tests to pass. VERY tough grader and the tests are rigorous. Not very enthusiastic about answering questions. But she goes over plenty on examples in class and her tests are somewhat like the homework and problems in the book.
Very tough grader, rude, and so hard to pass her class
I am currently enrolled in her chemistry in your life course, and it is very easy! You can finish this course in two days if you really wanted to. There are 11 chapter quizzes which are 5 questions each and 4 test which have 50 questions each! There also is a chance for extra credit!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I'm a HS student. I have straight A's on both transcripts except for this class. The tests are much more difficult than the homework. The better you do on each exam, the pickier she gets when she grades your test. I only took Chem 2 at PHSC because I did not have to take it with her.
Dr. Thomson made me feel as if I wasn't trying hard enough even after spending days working on homework. Her lectures were unhelpful, we just went over problems with no background information. She answered emails quick, though her responses just left me more confused. Overall, she was rude and it didn't appear that she cared about her students.
Easy course and very interesting. you can finish the course within a few days if you really tried. Did give extra credit, the only thing that was annoying was the first Syallbus quiz but that does not go against you in the end.
Background: skipped Intro to Chem Dr. Thomson is definitely strict and a tough grader, but not unfair. Grades 110 pts instead of 100 and the curve is always favorable (55 to pass). Be aware she is a doctor and her handwriting does suck for grading and lectures, lots of abbreviation. If you're paying attention it's not too bad though. Overall happy
Worst professor I've had thus far. Is definitely on a power trip. Gives criticism but if asked how to improve will claim that since you've taken intro you should know. I'm bitter she forced me to respond with "yes ma'am" after we disagreed once. She also backbites students who withdraw from the class. Only take if you want to suffer.
Fully expected to walk into this class feeling prepared. I took 2 major science courses with labs and college algebra before I took chemistry. This professor does not believe in PowerPoints and study guides. Homework gives no feedback if incorrect. Waste of time and money and she is extremely disrespectful. Asked for help multiple times.
I'm a straight A student and I was failing this class until I ultimately had to withdraw. She is a horrible lecturer, if you struggle to learn via online or textbooks then do not take her. This is the first class ever where I got an F and D on a test. DO NOT TAKE HER unless you are prepared to teach yourself and have prior chemistry experience.
I had Dr. Thomson for CHM1025 and CHM2045. While she is a very nice person, her lectures can be confusing and sometimes feel unrelatable to the tests. Another thing to take note of is you really only are graded based off test scores, so be aware of that. If you work hard it is possible to pass, but you have to put in the work from day one.
Do not take her classes
The professor's tough grading requires understanding her abrieviations, handwriting, and ability to learn from copying off the board. Homework, multiple choice questions, and written answers are challenging, with tests based on class average.
The professor's tough grading requires understanding her abrieviations, handwriting, and having the ability to learn from copying off the board. Homework, multiple choice questions, and written answers are challenging, and tests are based on class average.
I legitimately do not understand how it is possible for a professor to be this bad. There's so much I want to say but I'll just summarize with this. If you hate teaching, why in the world did you decide to get into teaching?
Tough professor, but the class is doable with hard work. Lectures can be confusing, and tests are very challenging, so be prepared to put in the effort. unstuck ai proved helpful for exam prep alongside the textbook.
Notes are almost impossible to follow and you're pretty much just expected to teach yourself and know it all. A simple question will turn into a demeaning lecture. Would not recommend anyone to take.
This class is very hard for those who have no prior experience with chemistry. It's also very test heavy; although she does have a curve grade scale, it doesn't really help that much. It's definitely fend for yourself in this class and learn it on your own.
If you want to have a nice college experience please don't take professor Thomson's class. She does not use any outside resources or powerpoints. She only writes stuff on the board and expects you to learn only using that. On top of that her handwriting is like that of a 5 year old. Some of the stuff she writes looks like hieroglyphics.
This professor traumatized me into not taking chemistry again. She is so rude and doesn't want you to ask questions. When I went to withdraw, she dealt with me very rudely. Please don't take this course if you need it for future majors. Her notes don't make sense at all. Chem is a challenging class, but it also depends on how professors teach it.
I wouldn't take this class if you didn't take chemistry before and there was things that I wouldn't have known if I didn't take APES. And there was a lot of reading you had to do to understand everything, but your grade was only based on quizzes and tests.
Absolutely the worst professor I've ever had by far. Do yourself a favor and PLEASE AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. More than half of the class dropped after seeing how she teaches. She does notes on the board the whole lecture without making sure we understand the material. Plus she has sloppy handwriting, writing the notes is honestly useless.
Professor Thomson is nice on a personal level but an awful instructor. She doesn't teach and expects you to know things without actually teaching them to you and when asked questions she never actually answers the question. Avoid her class if possible.
A good instructor, but moves very quickly. Some prior knowledge or strong interest in the material is helpful, but if you can understand what's going on, you will walk away with a thorough understanding of the material. Wouldn't recommend if you're not planning to study chemistry further.
