Won't take her again. Not very clear. Very hard to follow. First test class average was a F.
Hard. I tried sooo hard to a least make a C and I still came out with a D. Compared to test I seen from other classes vs. Dr. Bennetts....it seems like you are in a higher level biology. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!
This class isnt a joke. But u have to understand to study the AIMs posted..u cant start studying the night before the test, u have to start as soon as u get the info....Although this was one of the hardest classes I have taken, This class showed me that u cant slack...u have to study, u have to work hard!!! POINT BLANK...Dr.Bennetts also helps too.
This professor's notes are not at all helpful. She reviewed with me for the tests and I studied for a week and still failed the test, when she said I would do good. She's a nice person but an awful teacher.
Not very organized
Very nice teacher, tells you exactly what is on the exam, study hard or you will fail. dont just memorize it, be able to apply it.
This lady is not who you want to learn from, she teaches from slides and the stuff you learn is never in the book. Her teaching style isn't something you can understand. DO NOT TAKE HER.
unfortunately the only choices for this class are bad and extremely bad. its a horrible class to begin with. i guess i would recommend taking bennetts over christy, but what i really recommend is changing your major or transferring.
Her tests are all mult ch. but tricky so it doesn't matter if you've studied for days you're still going to make the same grade. This class should be very easy, but it was ridiculous. when she tries to explain stuff-well let's just say she can't. Horrible at answering questions, and don't approach her with a question from a test bc your wrong! AWFU
You can study and pretty much memorize the books and slides, but the way she words her questions, you will still get them wrong. She is overly hard and very unorganized. And don't ever expect to get your grades back quickly. Also, she talks down to you alot.
I would advise not taking from this professor. Her tests are VERY hard..and the lab practicals are difficult, too. It seems she wants people to not do well. She makes you feel stupid if you have questions and she talks down to you. She reads right off of her ppts..and not the best with explaining! If you do take her just know your GPA is at risk!
Dr. Bennetts can come off the wrong way at times, but she is a very smart lady with a good sense of humor. The class is hard, but if you study, you will do well. She is much less demanding when it comes to lab notebooks than the other professors, and she gives study guides for her tests. If you are smart with good study habits, you will do fine.
Dr. Bennetts is the best!!I didnt have any problems with her at all. Her tests can be difficult but she gives you study guides so if you fail... it was something you did not her. I loved her teaching style and she even sends you the powerpoints before the test. Definetly taking her again for 1102 this fall. Great teacher.
Dr. Bennetts is wonderful. She is very clear & helpful. People need to realize, this isn't high school, you EARN a college degree. Biology is hard, no matter who you take. Dr. B gets an unfair rating; she is WAY BETTER than most Bio professors! I would take her again in a heartbeat. Quit whining, study, pay attention, and you will do fine.
Awesome instructor! Gives very clear notes and even posts her powerpoints before each test. A couple of tips: 1)Buy a new book if you can. The book gives access to a website with a LOT of helpful supplementary info. Can only get access with an unused book #. 2)Do the AIMS!!
She read the power points to us! I can read! Send them to me before class so I don't have to show up. This was the most boring class I have ever taken. Take some one else.
This is a hard class, simply because not many students are thrilled by plants. But, if you decide to take it definitely take Dr. Bennetts. Her love of plants makes the class as interesting as it could possibly be and she is very helpful. She really wants her students to understand concepts, not just memorize them.
Only take this course during the summer if you are either coming straight from another biology course or are a biology major. There ia A LOT to learn in 4 1/2 weeks and if you should get behind at all, forget it. She is tough on tardiness, talking, and cell phone use, but I like that. She's nice enough, but can come off as rough around the edges.
Nice lady, she teaches with powerpoints and her lectures are understandable but tests are foreign, they're hard and have nothing to do with powerpoints or lectures, nor book. We had no idea where she came up with test questions.
Nice lady, teaches with powerpoint and her lectures are understandable but her tests are foreign, they had nothing to do with powerpoints or lectures nor the textbook.
dear fellow students: please look back how you performed before you criticize the professor. I know this professor well. She has passion for teaching and would like you to learn as much as she knows... and she would not mind sharing with you. One tip for you guys is that this is a science course. Learn to apply, don't repeat what you learned!
Ouch.... would sum it up. She is ridiculously difficult. The tests were in a foreign language, and that's after studying. Lectures consist of her yelling, and waving around her stupid laser pointer... Avoid if you want to live
Shes nice but if you like passing tests then id go somewhere else. She uses powerpoints but they mean nothing when it comes to the test.
ATTENTION: DONT TAKE HER. RUUUNNN.
You can tell she is very interested in her subject, but I had a hard time understanding a lot of things. She answered questions as if "duh why don't you know that". She is very nice though. Tough on late policy (not a bad thing).
I had her for bio 1108, botany and plant physiology and I can definitely say that she wasn't the easiest teacher but it wasn't that hard either. Loves to use powerpoints. Never used a book in 3 classes. Very passionate about botany and if you show some honest interest, you'll probably do a little better.
She was wonderful! She is very interested in biology. She even tried to make it interesting when most of the class was asleep! LOL She gave many ppl chances to speak in class. I was the one always asking and answering questions.LOL My advice is if you have a question, ask it! I definitely plan to take her again in the FALL.
I read these ratings and was scared to take her but she was the only teacher teaching the class in the summer. Anyway she is a great teacher I learned a lot and made decent grades on the tests with and without reading the book. She gives you aims that pretty much tell you what to know for the test. I'm taking her in the fall.
If you are a biology major, and you have a heart for biology or looking to one day teach biology then yes she is a great teacher to take. But if Biology is a core course and you just need to take it, then take it from someone else. She is extremely difficult, and very ruff around the edges. I would only recommend her to Biology Majors.
Yeeahhh this class is hard. You've gotta be uber smart and/or study like crazy to get a B. Her tests are nothing like her powerpoints, which are useless. She's nice enough, but TAKE SOMEONE EASIER.
ok, so if u wanna walk out of this class with a B and not learn a thing, then take someone else. If you want to walk out of this class with a B and get your $ worth of knowledge, then def. take Dr.B. Not to hard, but not a walk in the park. LOVED HER! Got a B, but messed around a lot. I would say an A is def. possible, takin her for bio 3000 n spr.
Very helpful and provides feedback. All you need to do is ask.
Botany is no easy class by any means, especially at ASU where science courses are extremely difficult even with preparation. You must study daily for clicker quizzes, and her tests; look whatever she doesnt emphasize (STUDY IT!) practicals are crazy so you better study ahead of time and frequently. She makes the class very exciting!!
I guess it was such a crazy class because it was summer semester, but I don't care for her teaching style at all. It is possible to get good grades with preparation, buthe provided very little feedback on test (almost none). It seemed as if she was out of place or rushing all of the time.
She's a nice lady and all, but her teaching style sucks. Reads directly from powerpoints so unless you can't read yourself, she really isn't teaching. Tests aren't too bad, lab practicals can be very difficult though (especially in the summer when there isn't much time to really get a grasp on the material). Overall ok class, but take someone else.
She seemed like she just didn't want to be there at all. She was always unorganized and took forever to grade and hand back assignments. Her teaching style is not very conducive to the average learner. She does not speak to you as a low level bio student and it makes things hard to understand. She's not very helpful either.
she's a pretty good teacher. didn't know anything at the beginning but she took the time out to help me understand biology. and if i decide to take biology i would take Dr. Bennet's again. besides of what i made before. atleast she takes the time out to show you what u need to know. she did for me.
Botany. Easy if you organize your notes and take pictures during lab. Organize pictures into a powerpoint. This instructor is better than the other one for Botany.
Botany is not a fun subject. Dr. Bennetts teaches it very enthusiastically. Her tests are multiple choice/essay, and they are not easy. STUDY! Every single thing she STRESSES in class is on the test! Take pictures in lab and make a powerpoint. She is a very fun person; it's the subject that is difficult.
Botany: If you come into an upper level class expecting easy, you are a fool. There will be a good deal of extraneous info that you will not need in the book if you read ahead. If you can get the ppts ahead and go over them as well, you will be good. Tests cover lecture & book, but she tells you what you should need.
Not a big fan of her class. The book taught me more than what she taught... She reads directly from power points and is EXTREMELY unclear on what she is trying to explain...good luck
Don't take her class. She makes things complicated for no reason. Her tests are nothing like the notes. She's also boring. Take someone else.
Surprisingly one of the eastiest professors I've had at ASU. I thought it would be a lot harder since it is an upper level class, but I breezed through it. Tests are exactly what she says in class. There are no schocks/tricks/surprises. Just read the book!
Being taught by Dr. B was a pleasure. She is clear on what she expects & stresses what will be on the clicker quizzes & tests, especially lab practicals. She is very enthusiastic about plant life and enjoys what she does. Read the book thoroughly and highlight. Don't take this class unless you have the time to focus on it outside of the classroom.
Sweet woman, but can be very unclear. She over-explains. As others have said, do not take her class (especially 1108) if you don't have time to devote to it outside of class. The recommended 10 study hrs/week may or may not be enough here. She gives good notes, and labs are usually easy credit. Practicals easy in 1107, not quite as easy in 1108.
Good Professor. To make an A study, listen, and read. She may seem condescending, but she is not.
Study! That is the most important thing you can do for this class.
Wait until Dr. Wear teaches this course. Dr. Bennetts is far from qualified to teach Evolutionary Biology. There is one thing when the class is just hard but has a good professor. This is not the class. It is made over complicated and she constantly contradicts what she say's in lecture.
she seems out of touch with some of the material she teachers. i guess her expertise is on plants because when discussing things related to them, she's more vivacious and clear. her tests seem unusually difficult and seldom follow what she emphasizes during her lectures. the labs were ok, but only because they are standardized. do not recommend.
Dr. Bennetts was tough and rude at first, but she turned out to be funny and very interested in what she taught. Go to class and take notes, study for the Tests and especially for the lab practicals. You rarely stay in class for the full amount of time in both lectures and labs.
study study study! read the chapters. i always went back and rewrote my notes using the book the her slides from class. Labs were fun and we never stayed the entire time.
READ the Book
record the lectures and rewrite your notes
This class is easier for students familiar with Biology. She comes across as condescending and pretentious. Very defensive if you ask her to repeat something. Willingly answers questions that add depth to the subject. Would not recommend to students who struggle in Biology. Read, read, read!
Thought the class would be harder but was actually easy with enough to studying. Record her lectures and study what she stresses in class. She is very clear about what will be on the test just study it!
I enjoyed Dr. Bennetts' class. She was very clear on what was expected and the tests were exactly the material from powerpoints and text. As long as you study your notes and read you will do fine.
Exceptional professor. She enjoys what she does. Not only is she knowledgeable but she is good at what she does. She has a true ability to teach. Listen and she will get you where she wants you to go. No shortcuts with her. If you want it, she will earn it and she won't keep you from it. Best professor yet. She should give a class to the others.
If you can avoid taking this course with her, do so. This instructor was unwelcoming, and was, more often than not, unwilling to help when asked. The test questions are made up of the "fun facts" she offers in the lecture, in addition to her vague powerpoints. The lab practical questions are far from straight forward, but jam packed.
I took this class over the summer, and it was BEYOND difficult. She flew through the ppts to let us out 30min early every day. If you do not have a BIO background, you will not retain very much in this class due to her inadequate teaching style. Tests were so-so. Labs were fun.
You have to teach yourself. The amount of stress that came with this course was unreal.
Dr. Bennetts is a joke. Arrogant, condescending, thinks no source of information (even the textbook) is valid but her own mouth. She's ridiculously tough without reason, and just overall mediocre. If she's your only option, just skip out and try again the next semester. It'll hurt a lot less.
I took Dr. Bennetts over the summer and she is a horrible teacher. She put up PowerPoint DAYS after she had the lecture on them, but gave quizzes the day after she taught it. She flew through the material, but when asked for help she had a horrible attitude. During lab she just sits at her desk. I have never had a professor that did so little.
Worst professor in Augusta University. No intelligence whatsoever. She prescribes one text book but takes questions from another text book to show she is intelligent. Works hard to give low grade and F grade to students to keep her low esteem high. Stay away
She was dry and sarcastic. She's kinda rude and doesn't really connect with students at all. I wouldn't try to talk to her. Just show up and take notes, study notes and try on test. It's not that hard as long as you put a little bit of effort. Lab test were a little bit difficult. Study the whole lab. Test are the PowerPoint. Extra credit from book
No nonsense professor. Pay attention and take good notes because you will be tested on the minutia of her lectures/labs. Willingly answers questions and will even get into a tangent if the question is relevant to the lecture. And please, for the love of God, turn off your phone before class (unless you like quizzes).
Not very helpful at all... she goes so quickly and doesnt slow down even if you ask for clarification... dont take any classes with her youll regret it and maybe even change you major
She is very rude and unreasonable!!! If I were you I would ask to get a different professor!!!
You have to study and really make sure you have the material down to do good in this class. This class was pretty difficult for me but I passed. In my opinion, she is very caring. She let us retake our first exam and gain back some points to add to our prior score and curved our last exam. She was also kind and encouraging when I visited her office
Professor bennetts is very well educated in her teachings, Just dont expect to come into this class and put in little work then expect an A or a B. This course was harder than i expected it to be, But pay attn. to her powerpoints, and READ THE BOOK, & you should be fine.
Take notes at breakneck speed! The powerpoints she reads from are what is on the exam, not the book. The ppts were not posted for students until two days before the exam, so if you cant wait and take it with another professor, record lectures and good luck. Do not expect feedback or help outside of class.
Probably the worst professor Ive had at AU. BIOL 1101 is supposed to be one of the easier sciences, but she made it extremely hard. I was barely holding on the whole semester. Tests come straight from powerpoint but she wont post the PowerPoints until 2 days before.I dont recommend her for no one, no matter the subject of science youre taking!
NOT a good experience taking her. I now have to repeat the course. She is extremely rude and demeaning when you ask questions. She makes you feel stupid if you dont know the correct answer to the question that you asked as if you were supposed to already know the answer and shouldnt have been wasting her time. DO NOT take her for a summer course!
Dr. Bennetts is an interesting character. She's tough. She told many students to change majors. Although, if tough love is your motivation, she gives it. I would take her again mostly because I know what to expect with her now. Pay attention to details.
This woman didn't even know when her class was scheduled for and insisted on scheduling online exams outside of the times her class was supposed to meet making her class impossible to complete if you had a job or other classes that met during her exam times.
Took her online class. Lots of homework given without notification thats not on the syllabus. First day of class a test was only available 9-11 am with an email at 10 to let us know. Doesnt accept late work, no matter how small the time frame. Rude in emails. Poor organization of class. Would never take any of her classes again.
Not sure why all the hate for Dr. Bennetts. She a good teacher that expects you to study and know the material. Studying is a must in any biology class. Dr. Bennetts is very gracious and can tell which students are actively working hard and studying. This is a very helpful course to prepare you for the demands of anatomy and physiology.
I took Dr. Bennetts for BIOL 1108 in the midst of COVID-19. Despite the restrictions the university had to impose, I thought Dr. Bennetts did a solid job. She taught the material via lectures that were based on the textbook and for this reason, attendance was not mandatory. She seems to have a sour reputation, but I thought she was great.
This class was so much harder than it needed to be. The tests are nothing like her lectures and she words everything where its harder to understand. I had this class online maybe that was the problem but I would definitely find another class probably in person if you can.
Whatever you do, dont take her. Her tests dont go along with her lectures or textbook. She puts questions on the exam to throw you off. She likes and laughs at students struggling In the midst of a pandemic, she didnt care at all. Avoid at all costs
I love Dr. Bennetts! She clearly states on the first day of class that she expects you to put the effort in, so don't expect an A if you skip lectures or don't study. Very responsive to email questions. Tip: get Quizlet. She posts the lecture powerpoints and I guarantee an A if you write/study flash cards for EVERY term used in the powerpoints.
Be advised, summer is condensed and fast-paced. To earn a B(+), familiarize with the chapters in advance. Understand the study guides (terms and concepts), and reread. Study her PowerPoints. Dr. B is smart, but a no-nonsense, detail-oriented professor and grader. Bring your A-game. This class requires lots of extra work and personal accountability.
Dr. Bennetts is an amazing professor and I'm shocked by how low her rating currently is. She's readily available, easy to talk to, and makes lectures interesting and interactive. Her class is hard, but rewarding if you put in the effort. Her classes are lecture heavy, but she does a great job explaining concepts and uses videos to support content.
This professor is an okay teacher but acts like this is a highschool class. She treats the students with little respect and denies them their dignity.
She is very condescending towards her students. Please do not take her class, even if she is your LAST option. I initially wasn't suppose to be in her class but they ended up changing my professor at the last minute. Even though I am always on time to her class; if you are 5 fives late, she likes to embarrass the students.
I would I highly recommend avoiding this professor; while I believe she cares about the knowledge she tries to teach, she talks directly from slides and adds nothing special however makes attendance mandatory and puts down students who are more than 5 minutes late. She also has a tendency of contradicting and placing herself on a pedestal.
While Bennetts worked with my class around the end to help everyone with their grades her attitude steered me away from liking her. She is very rude to students who show up 2 minutes late and has no regard for personal life. She would stop class to yell at those who came late and honestly she just always seemed to be in a bad mood.
she reads off of a powerpoint for lecture. quizzes are online so they will help your grade. her tests seem nothing like the lecture most the time. if you are late to her class get ready for her to make a comment. she is not a very caring or nice person. just come to class and read the powerpoint and you will do okay.
Bennetts was bad. Very disrespectful and rude towards her students. Took off points from tests for completely BS reasons. Takes forever to post powerpoints, and her powerpoints are very unclear. Never gives practice questions.
Unless she is your last option, do not take her. Her lectures are just her mumbling off the slides. She also has a very nasty attitude towards her students. Also takes off points on short response questions for completely BS reasons. Just memorize her powerpoints, and you will do okay.
Had to take this class since no one else was teaching it. Just pray this school gets more botany teachers.
Her classes are basically read the PowerPoints, she is really rude with the students and her exams are hard for no reason. Her study guides are from the book so don't try to study with the study guides because is not gonna help you. What save the grade is the quizzes, they are all online so you can have a lot of points.
Had Dr. Bennetts for both lecture and lab. Each test and lab practical had several extra credit questions. Clicker quizzes very often, so attendance is crucial. Responds very promptly to emails and is flexible with office hours appointments. Great professor.
I know that you probably read the other posts and saw her overall rating, but I got an A+ in her class, so if you're stuck with her let me tell you how to succeed. Dr. Bennetts has an attitude but it's all surface level, deep down she wants you to succeed. Just focus on her slides for the exams and you'll do fine. Make slides for practicals.
Sorry excuse of a teacher. The only thing you'll gain from her class is not knowledge of plants but unfathomable stress and grey hairs. This teacher needs to understand she's not teaching graduate students, just undergrads who were pretty much forced to take this class. You can tell she likes what she's teaching, just not who she's teaching it to.
Hope AU can get some new botany professors, considering this is a required class for bio majors. I spent so much time studying that my performance in other classes fell & I still had to drop. Exams are set up to make you fail, she is extremely rude and demeaning, and you are paying to learn outdated material.
Great teacher for summer 1108 bio, both lab and lecture. Participation matters due to in-class quizzes, and group works. Easy class to do good in just by staying on top of the powerpoint slides. Recommend.
Dr. B. is passionate about her courses. If you aren't taking the class seriously, dont waist her time. She is tough because she cares. Her tests are tough but if you show up, participate, and take notes you will be fine. Highly recommend group study sessions, and ask her for help! She wants you to do well!
I would bet that most of the people giving Dr. B. bad ratings did not put in the work. Yeah she is hard on her students. Its called passion. She gets upset when people dont come to class, dont study, and leave lab early. That's on you, not the instructure. She will give back to you everything you put into it. MAKE STUDY GROUPS!!!
Honestly, this class has no structure, no learning objectives, just pure slide shows, and just her talking, along with an outdated book. She is not encouraging, and would not change her ways to improve her class to the point that she gets happy with a D average. If you try to ask her for tips on how to improve in her class, you're all alone.
Not encouraging whatsoever, sets you up for failure. I studied not only based on her lectures/slides, but also with others, and I still did awful. Not worth the stress, AU needs to find more Botany professors because this is ridiculous. Since she is the only one, many Biology majors switch to Cell and Molecular Biology just to avoid her class.
