Unorganized, unclear test questions, unclear in getting information across, goes to fast in lectures not allowing enough time to take notes, says notes will be online but they never are. He's got a nice personality. He just lacks in the teaching field.
A tough grader, but a good teacher. Pushes students to try new things. I got a lot out of his class
Thought provoking assignments. Helpful when you have questions. Funny
This class was more difficult than it had to be. He made the questions impossible to answer and had no clear way of explaining what our curriculum was. I believe the average out of the class was a C, but I didn't know anybody who got higher than a D.
If I thought there was an acceptable answer to most of his questions I'd say he was a just adifficult grader, but I think that he's actually an impossible grader. He isn't clear at all... he's a nice guy but all I really learned was how NOT to do things.
He was pretty good. Class was interesting. Grading was tricky, attendance was a **** but his grad student was pure evil.
He sucks
Good teacher, needs better outside hours, but helpful when you can find him
If your taking 120, you dont have much choice. With that in mind, he makes dull material fairly intersting. Tests are tricky if your not particularly smart, but easy if you are. Book is NOT neccesary if you are an A/B student; just listen to lectures.
Stan is a great teacher. If you're taking any of his classes just to get a passing grade, you're missing the point. He challenges any answer you can give to prepare you for your career & your life, where right and wrong aren't so clear & there is no grade
Personality made class fun. Be there for every class and you get easy points, do all the homework assignments because they are fairly simple and help you better understand the chapters.
Class is definately an ATTENDANCE class. Class is out of 100 points which means if you miss, say 2 questions on a test, well, there is 2 percentage points. So that blows. He is not very clear with his ideas and has you do some really random****. Don't take it unless you are a VICO major!
not cool. took this class twice cause i got a c- from attendance and i needed a c or better to apply. and dude used the EXACT same jokes in the same order . this 100 level class need not be this demanding. his tests blow cause the questions are so vague and could be answered different ways.

Definitely an attendance class, go and you'll get easy points. They equal a test grade (an easy A) 20/20...and there are always more than 20 assignments...if you do all of them you get extra credit. The class is fun and interesting. Alost knows his stuff...definitely worth it.
Tests are based on stuff that is hardly discussed in class, making class a huge waste of time other than for attendance purposes. Big class. Seems like during image comment portions, every dumb person ever raises their hand. "I like it... uh.... cause it's green and I like green." Shut up.
this guy is a total ****

this was a required class, and it was tediously boring. The tests were difficult because you have lots of info to know... info you'll probably never use again.
Do the homework assignments and youll be fine. Tests are kinda hard. Hes a nice and funny guy, but sometimes its kind of a boring class.
This class was sooo easy, but it's super boring and retarded. His jokes are never funny. The material is always common sense. And people always come up with the most stupid comments to share. "I think the indepth city scenes are really emotional." Please. Don't talk.
He's a cool guy, and understands that big lecture classes will put you sleep. Don't worry about the readings just pay attention.
Hes crazy. He doesnt care about his students. He Kind of knows what hes talking about. His tests are really hard. Make sure you do the homework assignments and make it to class.
I wouldn't waste your time taking this unless you're a VisCom major. If you are an A or B student, and go to class every day, you don't need to read the book. I only read the sections I needed to write the homework papers, and I got an A in the class. Stan's pretty cool. He's cheesy but the class is pretty laid back... unless he's in a bad mood
He is an okay prof. Make sure you read the textbook and go to class! His test questions are tricky.
A difficult class. The class itself was interesting. Stan knows what he's talking about and tries to make it interesting. His tests are unbelieveable difficult and it is difficult or impossible to go see him for help if you get a bad grade. Not a class I would take for fun.
A great instructor, and a lot of fun.
Go to class. Do the work. You'll be fine.
As long as you go to class and pay attention and re-read over your notes a couple times before test, you should be fine. The class was very interesting and I didn't mind going at all.
He is a nice guy, but don't get on his bad side. Make sure you are always respectful. The class is conducted in a fairly simple way, but his tests are difficult -- don't expect As, even if you're an A student. If you meet with him during office hours, he's actually a really nice guy. Don't let his classroom demeanor fool you.
Not a great class. Was looking forward to a good start to a web design career, but this class had barely anything I was looking for. Stan is a decent professor, but from my personal experience, was unapproachable and not willing to talk outside of lectures. Depends what you're looking for, but I would not highly recommend this class.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. I wanted to go into visual communications going into my freshman year- after this class I switched out because I was afraid I would have to deal with Stan for the rest of college. Tests are unfair and impossible. He grades too hard and is not understanding in the least.
He was a very friendly prof. Class involved alot of work but he was helpful. I was not even a vico major or anything and the class was still interesting. No textbook use needed, but alot of outside class time is needed.
AVOID STAN ALOST. His classes are long and boring. Stan's in class discussions are awful as he does not even listen to anything anyone says. You come in 5 minutes late and the door is locked; you actual manage to enter and he won't hesitate to belittle you. This guy is a serious control freak and his tests are impossible. STAY AWAY FROM STAN.
Nice guy with experience and expertise in the field of Visual Communication. Very open to students in class lectures and wants students to talk and share work. Tests are hard but manageable. Has a sensible reality of how to treat college students. Demands respect but gives it right back.
Stan sucks
Stan is without a doubt one of the most boring teachers i have ever had. not only does he gives the most insane tests, they are nearly impossible to pass. he gives reading assignments that were a waste of time. i recommend never taking this class. because of stan's insanely boring lectures I dreaded going here. STAN SUCKS
Boring...reading assignments are pointless. Tests are hard. Not a jerk though. He seems like he would be a lot cooler in a smaller class. If you turn in all your assignments though you can still get a good grade. He gives extra credit if you go to class too.
I love Stan! He's a great professor and he really knows what he's talking about. The class is really easy to get an A in as long as you come to every class and do the homework. Everyone says his tests are impossible, but if you memorized your notes and skim the readings you will do fine. I loved this class and Stan keeps you entertained.
This classed sucked. The only positive point is that you don't have to buy a book. I sat in the front row (I thought I'd need to pay attention) but I really did crosswords puzzles & complained to my friend how BORINGBORINGBORING it was! So boring. Lectures, readings, assignments are useless. He drags the time out. tests are HARD-almost impossible.
Stan is a great teacher and he works hard to inspire the students. Take his class.
Stan is a great teacher. He works hard to keep the interest of the hundreds of students in the class. I wonder what class he is teaching next quarter.
Large classes are hard to teach, but Stan tries different styles of teaching to keep all students interested. He has fun laughing at his southern accent and slow talk. If you get a chance to talk to him in his office he even lets you sit in his comfy chair.
Stan is great. I had him for 120, too, and a smaller class is definitely better, but he still did a really good job in our lecture. readings aren't really necessary (no book, though).his tests are hard and sometimes confusing, but he gives tons of extra credit just for going to class.
While Stan's a great guy, he's not the best at teaching huge classes. He does drag out his lectures his tests are difficult only because the wording of the questions (usually multiple choice) is garbled. He expects complete attendance and you usually have to write very short papers for each class. Do the work and it isn't too hard.
Okay so stan comes off as a nice guy, and he has a good sense of humor, however his tests suck! If you are not a good test taker you are screwed! He gives one page writing assignments due each class which you need to complete in order to help your grade after his terrible tests!
Its hard to agrue with the comments that say Stan is a great guy, because he is. He somehow manages to make 2 hour lecture classes entertaining and worthwhile (which is no easy feat). I will disagree that the tests really aren't all that hard if you just study a little bit. Besides, he gives plenty of extra credit if you screw one up.
I've taken both 120 & 140 and would just like to say that though Stan seems like a decent man, I've never hated a class as much as I've hated 120 & 140. The material is fairly interesting, but Stan's lectures are incredibly boring and the tests are uncomprehensible.
I took VICO 120 twice because the first time I received a C- in it (just barely missed getting a C), and I also took VICO 140. The only reason 140 was easy was because by that time I was used to Stan's teaching & testing style and you cover a lot of the same material. Stan is a great guy, I think he is funny, but his tests are a little ridiculous.
He is a really good teacher but I know that a lot of people have trouble with his tests, and do not like him because of this. You really need to study and do the readings, but if you're a VisCom student you're probably more interested in the class anyways as opposed to someone that is just taking for their tier 2 requirement
nice guy, pretty laid-back, kinda funny. homework assignments are incredibly easy and he gives a lot of bonus points for them. also gives bonus points if not very many people come to class. tests are challenging but not impossible to get an a if you do the reading.
I don't know why everyone thinks he's a "good guy," because he's completely unhelpful and pretentious. Tests are absolutely ridiculous.
Stan can be cool...but he could care less about the students. Sure, we had a 400 person class..but he really could care less about who understands and who doesn't understand the material. Don't even try to talk to him outside of the class, he is always busy. His exams suck. But there is a lot of homework, everyday, and there is a lot of points.
Frankly, he is not one of my favorite people. He appears to be nice enough, but there is an extreme lack of sincerity in his relations with students. He likes to seem as though he is everyone's, but could really care less about anyone. Extremely flakey (airhead). Difficult tests. Lectures do not always correspond with exam materials.
Funny guy. The tests are really not that bad as long as you skim the readings and go to class. You get all the points on the homework for basically turning in a piece of paper. I don't like viscomm at all and I got a 99.7% in the class.
Stan is funny, and makes class interesting. The homework that is due each class is easy, yet extrememly annoying; however, the more you do with each assignment and the more creative you are, he will give bonus points. (ex:20/15) I didnt catch on until the end! One horrible part was the exams. they were extremely difficult and confusing! pts add up!
Very easy! Just like VICO 120 but even less work!
I've taken 120 and 140 with Stan and he was also my advisor. He is a really nice guy and a good teacher. He is very friendly and accommodating [more than one ought to expect]. The work is not challenging, but some of it is quite interesting, so just don't forget to turn in your homework each day - it takes 5 minutes to put it together and print it
One of the few classes I actually enjoyed going to. I you study, tests are easy and if you turn in the daily homework you get at least all the points and often bonus. People only think he's hard if they don't study.
Good Professor overall. Would recommend to any student who actually studies, reads the materials assigned, and doesn't mind doing homework to help boost your grade. I didn't do as well on the test as I hoped but it was my fault because he gives you the material and even gives you opportunities to suggest what should be on the test.
Stan's the man! Great sense of humor, he knows class can be a drag so on nice days he gives extra credit. Tests can be worded weird, but overall it's easy. Little homework assignment due each class but they aren't hard, actually interesting since you have to go find examples of the stuff we talk about it. Good guy, good class
Stan's a super nice and funny guy! Knows the class can be long, so he'll let you go early or give extra credit on days where it's nice or snowy. 20 pt. assignments every day, but they're easy. Group work is annoying. Tests can be worded oddly, which is frustrating, but he curves. Overall, this class is SUPER easy, though.
Stan is awesome, really nice guy, willing to help out students but busy so you'll have to set up an appointment, FAIR--doesn't mean easy, he will fail you if you don't do the work but i loved the class
Stan is a great teacher! His tests are difficult but he gives students the best opportunity to get the best grade. There is 1,000 pts in the class and you can miss 100pts and still get an A. If you take school seriously then you will get an A. You can basically get an A if you just go to class everyday b/c he gives extra credit randomly.
Nice guy. Terrible teacher. Tests are just horrible, the material on them makes studying useless. He is an okay guy but needs to learn how to teach.
Stan is a pretty cool dude. There's homework every day but it's so easy that it's almost as if he's just handing you points. Take notes, use a laptop not a notebook. The only problem is the exams. I do not know what goes through his mind when he makes the tests, but they need a serious overhaul. It won't matter if you just do the assignments though
Great teacher, excellent class. His tests are somewhat hard but are based on lectures in class. Only problem is that he doesn't post PowerPoint slides online so notes have to be taken in class. If you study and do the homework, you will do fine. I would recommend him.
Good class. Jokes get kinda lame. Tests are a bit challenging and worded confusingly. Bottom line: Do EVERY excercise and never miss class. Stan gives out extra credit points randomly for no reason. You don't really need to read the text book either. Everything that's off the test is from the in-class notes.
This class is an interesting class. You are required to attend class because there's a exercise due almost every class. The exercises aren't hard, but adds up to a lot of points. He also take tardiness very seriously, so be careful if your class before this one is far away. His exams aren't easy so you'll also have to spend some time with them.
Stan is awesome. He is a great teacher but his tests are very hard so you definitely need to study. He is pretty funny and knows the class sucks so he tries to make it more enjoyable. Show up as often as possible because he gives extra credit on some days if the class looks like people are missing.
Also had him for 140. His classes are horrible, but you have no choice but to take him, so this is just for a heads up. Study your butt off on everything, and you MIGHT do well. His tests are ALWAYS messed up somehow, and he may count you absent when you're not if you don't collect your paper back. Oh, & he's a hawk if you're using a laptop. Beware
very boring lecture class. the tests are seriously impossible. barley anything in his notes are on the tests. homework is fairly easy with a short 10min each class. group projects are annoying but usually an easy way to bring up your grade to make up for the tests. he is a huge stickler for catching people cheating or texting in class
He is a very intimidating professor, but knows what he's talking about. He is very short in emails when asking for help with coursework. Daily homework assignments and tests that will break your brain down, literally. Do not expect to get an easy A or walk out exams knowing your grade! Good thing is that there is no text book for this course.
Classes are somewhat enjoyable he tries to make them fun. Material isnt the easiest so make sure to study. daily homework assignments arnt to difficult and usually a pretty easy way to keep your grade up. Doesnt respond to emails very well and very breif. if you want to talk one on one is the best way.
very entertaining class. tests are ridiculous though. very hard and meant for you to fail so make sure to study.. there is always extra credit given though which makes it easy to get a good grade. Stan was really friendly and genuinely enjoys teaching. would definitely recommend this class!
He is fun and energetic. The assignments are easy to do. The exams are a bit more difficult. Need to make sure you do your reading. Make sure you sit in front of the class, it gets hotter and muggy if you stay at the class. You will be getting into 2 group projects and evaluations sheets are given for each person.
Horrible !!! There is no need to study material for his test because his questions are worded so horribly that you won't come up with the answer that he is looking for. I would rather have a 7 th grade write the exam , at least they would stick to content that was talked about in class. He is the worst teacher I have ever had.
also teaches VICO 140, he tries to be funny, and he is sometimes. it is hard to get a hold of him if he loses a test or something along those lines, but he's very nice.
The tests are very hard, you have to study. I recommend reading every week. Stan the man is nice and his teaching is clear. STUDY!
Stan is a pretty cool teacher , but don't text or surf the web in his class. The tests are difficult and you have to study but he really does want you to do well in his class.
Stan is the man. He knows his stuff, and knows what good work looks like. He pushes you to be a better person and a better student in every way. He is also a great reference outside the classroom and is incredibly helpful in office hours.
This class was interesting at first. You turn in exercises each week for easy points but the test was really hard! He likes to trick and word the questions in a way that makes you think. Kind of confusing at times, canceled class a lot. But you can probably walk out with a B.
Stan is a good guy. You should come to every class because an assignment is due each day (the points for them help your grade). The tests are somewhat hard. Overall, a good class.
Class is interesting, exercises are fun, the tests are difficult. I received an A in this class, but the wording was confusing and challenging. He says the best way to take multiple choice tests is to cover the answers and read the question, but the phrasing makes that impossible! Almost all questions are applied questions; not definitions.
I loved this class because it pertains to my major and the subject interests me. Stan is cool in a corny uncle way. If you are not interested in VisCom I would not take this class as a TierII. The exercises that are due everyday would be hard to do without any Adobe programs. He is also very strict about texting or being on Facebook during class.
Stan is cool guy.Makes a lot of jokes.Attendance is not mandatory but there are exercises due each class.Exercises are very quick and easy. You do not need the book.Material is easy to understand but tests are worded in a way that makes it difficult to answer.Have to get used to the way he does tests, but everything else is pretty good.Take notes.
Funny, knowledgable, experienced, and helpful
You can get so much extra credit in this class it is insane. Go to class, it will pay off in the end. Stan gives extra points like every friday and they begin to add up. He teaches a lot and the tests are really hard but if you study and know the material you should do decent.
i LOVE stan. he's a great guy and i enjoyed his class... but his exams were really hard. a lot of his questions came from the readings... and i didn't read a lot from the book and still achieved a B... but it's definitely not an "easy A" class because of his exams
The daily assignments were really simple and gave you easy points. The exams, however, were a bit difficult. I found the content to be pretty interesting, though, and Alost was a good professor.
Amazing professor! He gives great feedback and genuinely wants you to pass his class. His lectures go over everything you need to know for half of each exam, so the rest you have to read about in your textbook. He also gives a lot of extra credit, but you definitely have to work for your grade. I would recommend this professor to anyone!
SERIOUSLY DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. Please take my advice. He made his tests way too hard and averaged at C-'s every exam. For a level 1000 class, it was ridiculous how hard he made his tests and the amount of material you needed to study for it. He would never reply to emails w a direct answer he always just said "read the material" awful
i went to every class and did every assignment and i understood the material so it was an easy a today
honestly the most annoying professor I've ever had. he thinks he's funny and that the class is more important than it actually is/ needs to be. more strict about tests than all of my other professors combined and his tests are difficult with a lot of trick questions. I definitely would not take this class again with him as the professor.
Awful teaching/personality, tells the worst jokes and no one laughs. The content is awful and there is homework due every class. Do NOT take this for an easy a course. The exams are worded horribly and he acts surprised when students do poorly on them. He makes students take their hats, coats, and backpacks to the front of the room to take exams.
his exams were really hard for a 1000 class and he never provided any type of study guide for them. I was told it was an "easy A" when I was looking for classes and it definitely wasn't an "easy A". A lot of his exam questions come from the book and he likes to ask trick questions that could have more than one answer.
His lectures are simple enough, but the assignments and readings take the biggest toll. If you go to every class and actually do the readings, the exams are okay. But he'll help, if you ask, and there's extra credit. An A is possible. And choose your neighbors carefully, he makes you discuss the material and do group work sometimes.
Stan is cool. Lectures aren't awful if you're interested in the subject matter. He has it balanced where if you turn in 24/26 of the assignments and get at least a C on the exams you'll pass. Assignments are easy A's, and he throws so much extra credit that you literally have to try to fail.
The class is difficult, especially the exams. But if you do all the home work, discussion boards and extra credit, you will get a good grade in the end. It is not always clear though what he wants. Not a bad professor overall!
Sooooo much work for a 1000 level class. It was more work than my other 3 classes combined. He seems like a nice enough guy, but get ready to work extremely hard, especially considering its an entry level class.
I'm upset that every time I post a review about Stan it gets taken down. Basically every negative thing that's written about him here is true. I would not take again, and if you can avoid him.
He is nice guy and gets you out early almost every class. There is homework due every class but it is not that hard. If you do not go to class you can not turn in the work due that day. He does put up the notes for every class though. The tests are not very hard if you study. If you do the homework and do okay on the tests you will not fail.
He has homework due every class and you cannot turn it in at all if you do not attend, which can become tedious, but he builds in padding so you can miss two classes and still get 100% in the class. Study and do the reading and you will do well. He sometimes gives extra credit for showing up, which gives extra padding.
He seems like a fascinating guy with a lot of experience. The class itself is fairly difficult. There are assignments due every class and you can't turn them in late no matter what. A lot of info for a 1000 level class. He gives extra credit for showing up to class, which is nice. Show up, do the homework, and study and you'll be set.
I liked Stan's class a lot. He's very nice, and clearly knows a lot about the subject, but he can be a little bit of a hardball sometimes. Homework due every time that class meets, and you have to be in class to turn it in. Tests can be very challenging. However, the homework provides major padding, so do it! Easy A if you put in the work.
While attendance is mandatory, we turned in exercises every class that were 20 points. He does go over the topics from the reading in class, but will ask questions specifically from the reading on his exams. He seems intimidating and can be if you cross him, but he is one of my favorite profs I've had. He's caring, knowledgable and hilarious.
The biggest issue I have with him is his professionalism. The second Is the fact that he only bothered to grade three times in the entire semester. Thirdly, his class is way too much work for an introduction class. Also doesn't give feedback. He also tested us over material that he never went over. By far the rudest professor at Ohio University.
Never knows what he wants. I don't even think he checks the exercises because hell gives you a zero because your "missing in-class component" but it's clearly there. Super high standards. If your PDF isn't named right, you get a zero.
Stan is a very entertaining character but I had a ton of negative experiences with him this semester. He is really bad at answering emails and is very confusing. You never know what he wants and he's always changing his mind on things. He often says he's going to do things then doesn't and definitely grades people differently based on who they are.
Nice man but the instructions for the exercises were confusing and it didn't help that there were no examples. The exam questions are confusing and if you don't read the textbook you won't know what's going on. I would recommend going to the lectures because some of the exam questions are exactly from the presentations. Interesting class though.
Just dont take his class. Im convinced he doesnt even read the class exercises and gives you a random grade based on how he feels about you. He gave me zeros on multiple assignments for not having the correct criteria when it was clearly listed. He is also awful at communication and does not care about you doing well in his class.
The most particular professor I've ever had. I got a zero on an assignment for having a dash in my pdf name. He gives zeros on assignments for tiny things rather than just taking off a few points. I don't recommend.
I took this class online as a freshman dropped it within a couple weeks. He gave me 0's on the first 5(ish) assignments that I, in fact turned in on time. I communicated this issue with him, and not only did he not fix the grade- he never answered.
Stan can be a little harsh at times. However, he truly cares about his students and only wants them to succeed. The homework/reading doesn't take too much time, and it's typically an easy A to obtain. I would recommend staying on top of the homework though, as the tests and exams are a little difficult. I actually really enjoyed his class!
While his class has a potential for interesting material he is not clear and an unfair grader. Sometimes you'll miss points for mistakes on his end then have to fight over a simple mistake to save your grade. That being said I did ok in the class but it's unnecessarily hard and draining for an intro level course. Also he makes you buy HIS book
Honestly Stan is the man. Lol. But seriously he's the type of guy that I grew up being around, ya know, big country fella. I find Stan to be a very amusing professor. Just do the homework and read the chapters (they're really not that long) and you'll be fine. The content isn't hard. Just don't be lazy. Don't get on your phone in class.
Stan is a very caring guy. He was always nice to me, however, I did not enjoy his teaching style and found his class difficult. The exams are exactly the same style as the chapter unit quizzes, so study using those quizzes. I never did great on the exams, but I passed with a B. Study hard!
Not a very good professor.Makes you buy the book he wrote. The workload for an introduction class is absolutely insane.I have more work in this one class than I do in 3 other classes combined. He asked what the best teaching style is for his students and then does the complete opposite. do not take this class if you want to cry every single night
Took this course online and in person. Stan is a wholesome and caring guy but doesn't understand when you don't understand him. The information is there but ironically enough how he communicates it in a misleading manner. I tried my best both times and still couldn't do good. Once you are on his bad student side, you are done for.
Stan was very inconsiderate and wouldn't accept my medically excused absences when I would be following university guidelines. He would also regularly give me zeros or low grades on attendance or class activities when I was present and had completed the assignments. When I would contact him about this he would be rude or not respond at all! 0/10
RUN AWAY!! Do NOT take any class with this man. I am a senior and I had more work in this class than my capstone and 3 other courses combined. Gives 0's for no real reason. Exam questions aren't even on covered material. 80-question exam with 50 min to complete. The most awful, painful, and difficult class. Should NOT be this hard for 1000's class.
Go to class! That's the only advice I can give for a good grade in this class. Stan was easy and a great professor to work with. Physical copies of homework are due every class and are a majority of the points.
Terrible professor!!! I understand he tries to make his class difficult to push you to be a better student, but he made my first semester hell. He most definitely has some sort of dementia because he will say one thing and then expect something completely different. He contradicts himself on a daily basis and thinks he's a big ole tough guy.
Every class we got out 20 minutes early (hour and 20-minute long classes), all you have to do in class is pay attention and do the homework, they're fun honestly. You know when all the homework is due, and when all the exams/quizzes are. He does not respond to emails a lot, but it is not a bad idea to talk to him in person about it as well.
I am a straight A student and I struggled in his class. The exams do not cover half the material. Not enough time to complete exam. He is a tough. It should not be this difficult in a 1000 level class. He is definitely a narcissist and hard to deal with.
I swear this is the final class I take with this narcissist. The class was designed for failure.
The homework is your attendance so you do have to show up to class if you want points. Those are the main way you get points along with the tests. The tests are HARD. and theyre a lot of points. I am going to end up with a C but he is nice and always lets class out early. overall not bad.
He wrote the textbook that he makes you use in class so going to class after reading the chapter feels really redundant but you still have to go because the homework is your attendance. Do not go on your phone during class you will lose so many points if you do. The exams are difficult and includes information not from class.
Idk why Stan gets the hate he does. I found his lectures super engaging and interesting for an introductory course. There is a lot of homework but it's easy. His tests are hard but he gives so much extra credit that it's really not difficult to end the class with an A/B. He's clearly passionate and very educated about what he teaches.
This class with Stan can be tough, but engaging with the material and using resources like unstuck ai can really help. Attendance is a must, and the workload is heavy, but it's manageable if you stay on top of it.
Thank God I didn't take this class as a freshman because I probably would have dropped out. I am a second year taking this class because it is a requirement for a BFA in graphic design even though it's a seperate program. He is arrogant and offputting. Do NOT take this class unless you have to. He made me cry in class and did not apologize.
This semester I had bronchitis and missed a class. I tried to give him a doctor's note and assignment and he refused to accept either. So if you have a contagious illness, he apparently still expects you to come to class. Also if you come in to class late he will deduct 100 points from your grade, so you might as well not come to class at all.
He is tough when it comes to test and scores, but i learned a lot from him. He says attendance isnt mandatory, but you have a printed assignment due every class that you can turn in if absent.
Lots of work, a chapter reading and assignment for every class. It wasn't hard but don't cram. Missing class lowers grade bc you turn in hw every day. Lecture and textbook were pretty interesting (but they were the same content repeated for some reason). He's funny in class but strict.
I liked Stan for VICO 1000, although hard teacher, he was great with explaining everything. However, my next class w/ him was not great. He was 10x harder & I ended up changing my major & leaving the program to a different field. He is great to know as a person, but as a teacher, he makes it difficult to want to connect with him. Def stresses u out
I love this class. I loved the hw because it allowed you to use your creativity. Attendance is mandatory because you have to turn in your hw everyday, but he lets class out 20 min early. That said, if you forget to print or there was an error, he is strict. Sit with people who are friendly because you will be doing a lot of talking and sharing.
The class is formatted where you read a chapter and complete an exercise paper based on it before each class. You have to get the exercises printed, which is inconvenient, but the papers themselves aren't difficult as long as you read the directions. He isn't the most forgiving to those who break the rules, so make sure to triple-check everything!
Stan Alost is a great professor, don't get me wrong but he's harsh. Attendance is optional, but you are assigned an exercise everyday and if you don't turn it in, in-person you will receive no credit, so attendance is MANDATORY. Lots of homework, not hard at all, but they do take time. There are tests throughout the semester, but Kahoots got you.
Attendance is not mandatory; however, there are assignments due every class that can only be turned in on paper during that specific class meeting. There is a textbook chapter to read for every class, but I found the textbook interesting and easy to read. I had no difficulty with the exams. I really enjoyed this course overall.
I took VICO 1000 with Stan, and it was great! Interesting material that I actually learned a lot from. Exercises due at every class, so attendance is mandatory.
