Very great teacher. I learned a lot and I actually enjoy family history now! I didn't before and didn't think I ever would, BUT, I loved this class.
Great teacher. Most classes are just discussions. You have to do logs for the chapters in the Book of Mormon they aren't hard though.
I looked forward to going to this class everyday! Although you have to submit a log for every time you go to class, he is a really awesome teacher! I really enjoyed every moment of this class. Tests are pretty easy, studying is essential (only two). GREAT CLASS!
Bro Kivetts class is a discussion of the daily reading assignment. I have loved the dynamic in the classroom so far. Bro Kivett leads the discussion of important events in the scriptures then invites people throughout the hour long class to share insights. Often times he mixes things up. Just an all around great guy! Bright countenance...
I really enjoyed this class! And you can tell Bro. Kivett has a sincere desire to get students involved with Family History. I learned so much from this class, and I had a lot of fun doing it! You have daily quizzes on the readings, but they are easy, and he always gives clues! There are no tests. Overall, I highly recommend this class!
Absolutely amazing teacher. Very fair and lenient in grading. I learned a great deal from his course.
He is a great guy. You can tell he cares about his students and he's passionate about teaching. The assignments are pretty easy. Of coarse you have to do reading and respond to it before every class. You also have to do a 5 page paper but it's no big deal. Oh, and he has you pick out and memorize 75 scripture masteries of your choice.
way cool teacher, its easy to do well in this class and its fun. there are daily quizes, but they are easy. i recommend this class and teacher
Book of Mormon 1 - Great Class, Brother Kivett Keeps the learning model alive. Class is great, learned something new every time.
He uses his own beliefs and teaches them like church doctrine. It's annoying. Plus, it is all discussion from the class. He is really random and never finishes a lesson.
Bro. Kivett is a super fair professor. I missed a lot of assignments and I talked to him and he let me turn them in late. He is a super guy but expect a lot of reading, especially if your taking FDREL 121 as a block class. It was a lot for me at least.
If you know you are going to be busy don't take his class. He requires you to study an hour and a half for each class period to get full points. We never have time to finish a lesson and he is just all over the board with his teaching. If you like inconsistency and studying D&C for 4.5 hours every week take this class!
Bro. Kivett is awesome!!!! He breaks down the class into discussions everytime by discussing the previous reading assignment. This helped me actually do my homework b/c I knew my understanding of the next class depended on it. He does require 1.5 hrs of reading for each time you are in class but that's about it and it's easy. He's awesome!
Brother Kivett is AWESOME!
I love Brother Kivett. However, I did not find the classroom experience to be rich with doctrine. I often left class disappointed. But if you're looking for an easy A, he's your man.
Had him for Family History. He's awesome! He really wants us to succeed and feel the Spirit of Elijah and actually enjoy family history. He's awesome.
Easy, fun class. Good teacher, really cares about the students and knows his stuff. I love him as a teacher, except you are required to read for 1.5 hours for every class. take him if you want to learn!
He is a pretty good teacher, but he requires a ton of reading for every class period and the final exam was useless. We had to memorize 25 scriptures from the first half of the Book of Mormon and recite them all in one sitting. I don't know how that is considered an exam. I wouldn't take a class form him again.
This class makes the book of Mormon come alive.
AMAZING! He is a convert and very excited about family history. He is so nice and has such a pure heart. We went on a field trip to the Family History Library in SLC, and it was amazing. You have to do 2hrs of research for every class period, but if you miss a day, email him and he'll fix it. He rambles when he's excited, which is often. Love him!
Great teacher. insightful and fun. highly recommended. just read and come ready to feel the spirit. no busy work, just enjoy the Book of Mormon. i learned a ton! great discussions. tests = memorize scriptures and answer a few questions or write on a hero in the scriptures. easy but very helpful.
I thought the class was really boring, but ridiculously easy. You just have to show up and theirs a discussion every day about the reading and you have to memorize 25 scriptures throughout the semester. And read for 3 hours a week. Highly recommend this prof!
Brother Kivett was the best teacher I have had a BYUI. His class was very insightful. I had never really understood some of the concepts in The Book of Mormon that well but he made them easy to understand! He tells some of the best stories in class and truly loves what he is teaching! I would love to take a class from him again in the future.
Easy A. Grade yourself kind of class. Journal, participation, 5 min talk on a scripture. Most of the discussion in class was at the gospel essentials level. Never went into deep stuff. Sometimes had a hard time keeping attention in class. It can get boring if your into deep doctrine discussion.
this teacher is very good very nice and funny. recomended
Easy A. I was pretty disappointed in the class, we learned zero doctrine. It felt like Sunday School, the whole theme was relating the BoM to yourself which is nice but super boring and not interesting. If you want a feel good class take it, if you want to learn something new go a different route. Good guy though
Great at leading class descussion. I prefer him to other teachers I've taken 'cause He guides the class and lets the Spirit teach through us and him. I loved that homework was simple- just needed to record our impressions after each writing assignment (no length requirement) and then talked about it in the next class. Final:journal entry
he's a nice guy but his class is so boring. he doesn't teach. every class he sits there and has the class teach its self with hardly any of his own input. everyday is the same.
Good teacher, will work with you if you can't finish assignments on time. Loved his class, will continue taking family history classes.
Family History was a great class, but extremely disorganized. You pretty much teach yourself, but it's a great experience, and really, the due dates are not real. You can send anything to him up untl finals week and recieve full credit. Good guy, I learned a ton. But, if you need strict organization, I'd suggest another class.
Brother Kivett is great! He is really cool about missing deadlines within about a day, just email him and he'll accept the assignment.
I LOVE brother kivett! He is super kind and funny and helpful. His class is always captivating and insightful. As long as you do your homework everyday and study for the tests, you'll do perfectly fie!!
He is a great professor, and I really loved going to his class! The discussions we had were always interesting, and I found he is an extremely fair (or kind) grader. The only reason he doesn't use textbooks a lot is because there isn't one, but I count the readings. Which you should do the day before they're due, because they can be lengthy
Brother Kivett is a great teacher, and he's really nice and understanding. The only things I didn't like are 1. The tests are really obscure and really hard. And 2. By about midterms, the class becomes boring and redundant. The only people who should take this class from this teacher should be really focused and study hard. Good luck!
I enjoyed Br. Kivett's class for a while but it got boring real quick. The tests are very obscure and are more based on the homework than any class discussion we have. He is definitely the nicest guy I know and curves all his tests.
Kivet was one of my favorite teachers. Sometimes his class can drag but he will usually spice it up making us laugh. You can tell he loves what he teaches and knows his stuff! He his very friendly. I hold this teacher in high reguard.
Brother Kivett is a really nice guy. The only thing that I had a hard time with was in his American Foundations class he got off topic really easily and the discussions were unorganized. There is daily reading that has to be done, which is not too difficult. Overall if you do the reading, come to class, and prepare for the tests, you can get an A.
I LOVED Brother Kivett!! He is always willing to help and is so nice and understanding! He wants everyone to pass, and even though his tests are a bit difficult, he gives great study guides and helps anyway he can. Sure his classes are a bit dull, but he is so funny and so understanding! Just go to class, do the homework, and its an easy A!
Bro. Kivett was super nice and fun to listen to. He made every class interesting but this Teachings of the Living Prophet class was a hybrid class and we met with our groups every Monday and then class on Wednesday. Super interesting and would definitely take his classes again. Attendance is mandatory but there is no final.
This is a great teacher. He cares about the subject and helps us to care about it also. Some might say that the homework does not go in the tests, but the homework he assignees is very relevant for us to know as citizens. He is also very accommodating for those who struggle and those with questions. Amazing teacher. I do recommend him.
Smart teacher, but I had to teach myself. Only contained powerpoints and note taking. Tests were purely on slideshows so if you're good with note taking and memorization, I recommend taking this class from Brother Kivett! Very sweet, and honest man.
Brother Kivett evaluates students for having their reading done, attendance, weekly quizzes and exams. Exams have a low value and are designed to separate A from B. It's an easy class and you can learn a lot if you do your homework virtuously. Exams are not easy, but they are based on powerpoint slideshows. He gives a lot of extra credit.
Brother Kivett is awesome!! (he's also my stake president) He really cares about his students and tries to make things as easy for students as possible. No midterm. No final. He just has you share insights in a small group. Super easy and insightful class! The scriptures are your textbook haha I'd DEFINITELY take another one from him!
I really enjoyed Brother Kivett's class. He's extremely helpful and understanding. The only thing he's fairly strict with is abiding by attendance standards. He's very knowledgable and ties comments in well to the lessons. He's a great guy and I'd recommend his class to anyone.
Brother Kivett is one of the best religion teachers at this school. He always made his class very spiritual and uplifting. He understands that students are very busy with other classes and is very accommodating with assignments. He allows you to extend deadlines for projects and is very helpful and clear in with assignments.
Brother Kivett teaches effectively and engagingly. He's very personal and loves to get to know his students so he can relate the scriptures to their lives. The homework is as relevant as you make it--it's pretty self-guided, which makes you learn a lot more on your own, but he'll still blow you away in class with his own powerful insights.
Bro. Kivett is an incredible religion teacher. He doesn't assign much homework, and I found that this lifted the pressure and invited the Spirit into my studies. The discussions are very interesting, often going in a student-led direction. Excellent class, take him for sure!
Frustrating teacher. You read a TON out of a book at beginning of semester, take a pop quiz almost every class with tough questions. Would get off topic a lot and then rush through power points since he'd run out of time. Funny and nice guy, but not a great teacher. The only way I passed this class with an A is that he'd give out EC points randomly
Pretty good teacher. Some things were unclear, such as what idea we were supposed to get out of the reading. A total of 7 quizzes, random, & you take it individually then as a group. You're in groups the whole semester. There's a mid-term & final. Ended up not having to take final because he was amazing & super funny! Lots of reading, do-able.
Four insights are due before class from each reading. Classes, I felt, were not student led. In fact, many times it seemed like he would brush off people's comments to make sure he stayed on track with his lesson plan. The class is pretty surface leveled. Took no time to dive deeper into the material. Which is a shame, there was a lot of potential.
Bro. Kivett was an amazing teacher. His passion for Family History really showed in his lectures. I took a hybrid class so I normally only went to the classroom once a week. All the instructions on the homework was pretty clear and simple to do. I would advise taking a class from Bro. Kivett. Very helpful!
Brother Kivetts talks A LOT! The discussions in class, are insightful and you definitely feel the Spirit during the class. There is a lot of reading but reading from the Apostles and leaders and writing about it, is really easy. Easy A if you try and go to class.
Bro. Kivett, in my opinion is an amazing professor. At the beginning of the semester, I felt like his lectures were never-ending, but I opened my heart (and ears) and found that his class was my favorite. He is insightful, caring, reasonable, and full of wisdom. He's the kind of strong, enduring man you need in your life!
If you want to be edified but are stressed out with other homework, Brother Kivett is for you! Between each class students are expected to read 90 minutes which includes turning in electronically, 4 insights that apply to your life. There are no quizzes or tests. Each student is expected to share a 5 minute lesson they learned from a reading.
great teacher! No tests yay!! he is very humble and spiritual. class is very organized and easy. He makes it really easy. overall, great teacher! take himmmm
He is an amazing teacher that clearly knows what he is talking about. He works well with student's feedback and genuinely cares about help you to learn. No testing, but you are assigned to read 90 minutes and provide four insights between class times. It sounds like a lot, but it isn't if you split it up. He is very respectable.
This is the best religion class I have taken! He invites the spirit and his lectures are always uplifting.
I came out of every class with a dense page of notes full of insights that Brother Kivett helped us to find. He loves his students. He lets our participation mold the discussion, but keeps it focused. He mercifully allowed a bit of makeup work. He makes it feasible for slow readers to do their assignments. He always gave us exactly what we needed.
I feel like the amount of homework for this class was perfect. after each assigned reading you write four insights based on your personal thoughts. there are no rules about what you have to write about and this made the assignments very easy to complete. he is a very nice man and never got mad at me for falling asleep in class.
Brother Kivett is exactly the kind of teacher you professor to take religion classes from! All he requires is attendance, participation, and insightful comments before class. He cares about what you think, he just wants you TO think.
Super easy teacher, Read 1hr 30 min from chapters from BOM, give 4 insights or thoughts on 4 scriptures you want. No test, No Final, No Midterm, attendance is required, it is mainly the only thing you get graded on. Super easy, take him and you'll love it. Spiritual and always there for you. You'll leave his class spiritually stronger each time.
Great teacher. Loved the class. I learned a lot.
SO EASY. Brother Kivett just wants you to read. The midterm and final are just sharing insights with a small group of people. He just wants people to show up and learn about the gospel. He's not harsh about being late, grading, or anything else. I'd take him for the rest of my life.
There is no test at all!!!! The only thing that really matters is your homework. You do it online. He will assign certain chapters, and you have to read it for 1.5 hours and share 4 insights. That's it! He is an awesome man! Take him!
I was not impressed at all. I've taken a lot of religion classes and he was probably my least favorite. He isn't specific on what he wants at all when it comes to assignments and then turns around and gives you a bad grade. Dreaded going to class but some people love him. Just depends on what you want in a professor.
Great homework load and makes the experiences very personal. Lectures aren't very deep, but provides opportunities for you to dig deeper.
Instead of going to class one of the days, we would be in a small group setting-- this is nice if you enjoy the group you're with. The homework for this class is so easy. It's just writing two personal insights on the short reading he's given. There is a lot of discussion in the class which helps me learn more. I would definitely take him again!
Super great dude. Just a little boring in my opinion. Class discussions weren't very great. Easy A. Lots of homework, not a tough grader. You met with a small group once during the week instead of going to class.
I had him for Jesus Christ and the everlasting Gospel. He's awesome! Super funny and he doesn't assign very much work. Meeting in groups one day a week can be awesome if you have a good group. All you do for the midterm and final is resubmit homework. Take him!
Brother Kivett is such an amazing teacher. He really knows what he's talking about and he helped me understand the gospel in a way I hadn't before.
I loved Brother Kivett. He was amazing. He remembered my name when I didn't do much to catch his attention. He is an amazing teacher and loves what he teaches. He's very easy to work with, and if you just do the work, you can get an A.
This is a great class for slow readers. I like to just get my homework done as fast as possible. His policy is that you have to study for 1 1/2 hours, regardless of how fast you read, and then write 2 insights on it. This made it impossible to just get it done. I had to drop the class, because I didn't have time for it. Fast readers, avoid him!
He cares a lot about his students and tries to make them feel welcomed. He likes for you to participate but what teacher doesn't? There was a good amount of reading but it was worth it! Great guy and great stories!
Bro Kivett is such a great professor. Granted, his class was hard due to the fact that there was lots of work, but it was very enjoyable learning from him. He explains things well and loves what he does. Make sure to do the reading and understand it to be prepared for class. He truly cares about his students.
I loved his class! He is very inspirational and knows what he is talking about. He is willing to work with students. He makes is very possible to get a good grade if you do your work. I would definitely take his class again.
Brother Kivett was a good teacher, you could tell that he really cared about the subject that he was teaching. The only problem that I had with him was understanding him. You would ask him a simple question, but then he would go on for 5-10 minutes, and by the end, you had no idea what the answer was! Good man though.
Brother Kivett was an awesome BoM teacher. He was extremely interested in making sure we all got good grades. He gave amazing lectures and has some really great life experiences to share. He ended every class period by shaking all our hands at the door, saying something encouraging. I highly recommend him to anybody looking for a great FDREL class.
Such a wonderful professor and such a wonderful class. i truly enjoyed taking Family History and this course has blessed my life in so many ways.
Brother Kivett is awesome! I would highly recommend him for any class. He does have you read a lot but other than that homework load is light. He also loves to have you do group meetings. He is really kind and understanding. If you want an A, you will get it! :)
Brother Kivett is awesome! If you have to take this class he is definetly your best option!
Brother Kivett is awesome! He is very knowledgable in Religion and History. His tests are tough but not weighted very high. I finished the class with a 96.5 and my highest test grade was an 86 (after he added extra credit). Do the readings and you will be fine. He is hilarious and keeps the class engaged. I would take him again anytime.
Brother Kivett is wonderful. He teaches well and makes a sometimes boring subject more intriguing. There is quite a bit of reading, but the book is really well written and quite enjoyable. He is a fun guy and tries to help everyone succeed. This was a really great class.
Brother Kivett is awesome! He really connects with the students and gets to know them. He always joked with my group, and in all honesty, it made the class experience way better for me! He's a great teacher. Just do the core readings and master them, and you'll be good!
Brother Kivett is really a nice guy, I missed the day of the midterm and he let me attend his later class so I could receive credit! I didn't really like the set up of the class (the homework is online and you submit it before every class, its an insight with a ton of reading & you have to do for 1 1/2 hours), but I loved him as a professor!
He is a great guy, he understands that other classes are busy and tries to make his class minimal. Give two insights from reading a week and come to class and you'll get an 'A'. He likes to have us pair off and share our insights with one another.
He is an amazing professor. His homework is consistent all the time so it's easy to stay on top of. And it really helps you to get to know the material. He doesn't give out a study guide for tests because he wants you to know the material. Honestly, if you do the homework and pay attention in class (he takes attendance every day) you'll do great!
He is kinda boring and doesn't seem interested in anything he teaches. He is happy when he teaches though. I suggest going to class, he only lets you have 2 skip days.
He pushed us hard doing certain points of the semester, but he curves the tests, and makes the final easy if you do all your homework. He doesn't give study guides for the tests (wants you to know all the material), but if you attend class every day (he tests you a lot form what you learn in class), and really study your textbook, you will be fine.
He gave great lectures, all the test questions were from the reading/lectures (which is great for a history class) and he gave extra credit every once in a while too. 10/10 the best history teacher I've ever had.
Most of what you learn comes out of the book. He will teach lectures when you come to class but most of the class consists of discussing what you read. Being in class is important because he will give quizzes and always takes roll. Brother Kivett really cares about his students. He will curve tests and gives extra credit.
Prep quizzes before each class for homework (need to write 2 insights for what you read the night before class). Tests are pretty tricky, pay attention in class. He does take attendance for grade.
I was looking forward to having Brother Kivett's class this semester. He is a nice guy. However his homework for a religion class is WAY too much. Before each class you have to read for 90 minutes, on your honor. He has you do lots of awkward group work. And he doesn't seem to value when you give input in his class. ( I am not one to comment lots)
Class doesn't have a clear direction. You are expected to spend 90 min on every homework assignment. Doesn't give study guides, and if you ask him what to study he will tell you "whatever you think is important." He told us not to study certain topics, but those topics made up 1/3 of the test. If students complain he gives EC instead of fixing it.
Brother Kivett is one of the best teachers I have ever taken a class from. He's absolutely brilliant, enabling, and just an all-around great man. You can tell how passionate he is about the topic and it's very clear that he truly wants you to be the best you can be. He's really fair to work with and exceeded all of my expectations.
Brother Kivett is a great teacher. He knows what he is talking about too! He is so passionate about this class. I would definitely take him again.
The only thing I appreciated about this class was the fact that Brother Kivett tried to give us one day a week where we met with small groups instead of attending a regular class period. However, the projects and assignments were not very enlightening. He also failed to prepare students for the tests by not narrowing down what we should study.
He is a great person with a lot of knowledge. I feel like it is a lot to memorize in a short amount of time. I am not good at history classes or memorization anyways, so I found it a little difficult but did well overall. You are constantly doing group work.
Overall, he was a good teacher, just not quite my style. My main complaint is that instead of just doing the readings, you are required to spend an hour and a half on every reading assignment studying the readings. I was not a fan of it but to each their own. Really nice guy and willing to help you out.
Really enjoyed being in his history class! Lots of reading and studying with pop quizzes thrown in there, but he truly loves what he teaches and really tries to help students understand the material in an understandable way. Would take again for another course.
Lots of reading but along with that you are expected to study for an hour and a half as well as write an insight for each time you have class. Very flexible with grading, and good lectures. Expect lots of group discussions. Overall pretty good.
Bro. Kivett is informative in his lectures, and funny too! Be prepared to do 90 minutes of reading and an insight before every class 3x a week, and take notes since a lot of exam questions are based on the lectures! The class isn't too hard if you put your mind into it. Thankfully, he gave extra credit and curved test grades.
The amount of homework you have to do for a religion class is ridiculous. A 1 credit class has more homework than a 3 credit precalc class.
This guy gives the longest and most tedious homework of any religion teacher I have ever had. Like, you are in for work with this man as your teacher, and if that is your cup of tea then cool, but if you just want to read the scriptures and call it good then this is not your class.
Super easy class. I never read the textbook and got an A in the class. Honestly everything is pretty much curved in this class and there are multiple opportunities for extra credit. The class does feel super long but it's an easy A and 3 credits, would recommend.
Brother Kivett was really great but there was a lot of homework. Some of the assignments required multiple hours of reading the Book of Mormon, and there were so many assignments like that. It kind of felt like my brain was turning into mush sometimes. He likes to talk a lot. I learned some valuable things though so it was an alright class!
The biggest waste of time in this course was the time spent in class- he'd ramble on about some random political event going on in the world and loosely try to relate it to what we were talking about. Everything that was on the tests was from the book, which he would tell us to "memorize" each week. Learned very little from this class.
Brother Kivett was amazing. The content may be a bit heavy, always lots of reading, but the textbook is not dense nor are his lectures. He promotes discussion and participation. If you do your homework, he even awards you with extra credit.
Brother Kivett is a great lecturer and has taught this class many times and knows the material very well. I may be biased since I enjoy this content area and this is my emphasis, but he curves the tests and it should not be challenging if you do the readings and take notes. I finished with over a 100%
Brother Kivett is a nice professor, but his religion classes feel like four-credit classes. It's too difficult when you have other types to focus on. He expects you to keep a journal and study for an hour and 45 minutes. He isn't really caring of things that happen in your personal life so if you miss, you aren't going to do so well.
Kivett was a great teacher, explained things thoroughly, and gave extra credit opportunities. The homework was a lot of reading, so if you're not a reader it'll be a bit rough; however, it is doable.
I know that Brother Kivett is retiring this semester, but I wouldn't feel right if I didn't give him a 5 star rating. He is wonderful and so funny. Our class had phenomenal discussions, and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to take this class from him.
