Totally brilliant
By far the best teacher I've ever had.

KIND WEIRDM BUT FUN!JUST HOPE HE WILL NOT PICK ON YOU!!!!!
Take one of his classes!!!!!!!You might be sorry but you'll never be bored!
Hes one wierd dude. But I liked him and his class. Some days are duller than others, just depends on what were talking about. Hes a very smart guy.
Didn't like him, he was an arrogant ass who could ironically be somewhat biggoted and short sighted at times. He did make you think though, and h really made you justify your beliefs.
You will do well if you agree with him... he stands behind his opinions and WILL NOT CHANGE THEM! don't argue - it WILL affect your 'participation' grade at the end. it was a good class though, made you think and really back up your beliefs.
Stan's the man. Anyone who can wax philosophical over Nelly's "Hot in Here" video, or Eminem's lyrics is bound to have you listening. Besides the pop-culture stuff, he's read just about everything there is to read. Take his class. You won't be
I dunno about this guy, he was OK in the beginning but he really picks his favoutites. I got straight A's all through school but was a little quiet in his class. I got a C, go figure
If you are an good writer, just take his class
Great guy, all very interesting. A little too set on a few opinions, but more open than most instructors.
One of my worst teachers/courses of U. Terribly close-minded. Self-indulgent, self-obsessed, zealot. Believes in his own intellectual superiority...should hit a tread-mill, and take a class in humility.
He has some interesting reads...but one should not dissagree w/his opinions-they are correct for the most part though. & he takes advantage of the dim-wits in the class..& some ppl don't even realize they are being made fools of and continue on...shmucks
biased
sweet. makes you enjoy reading. i come to class eventhough it would be so easy to skip and still do well. He's stubborn, but backs up his views, so he's hard to dissagree with. take his class if you have time to read and are willing to learn.
Two words: great teacher!
Dont take him in first year. You won't appreciate him. hes not easy, but he actually teaches you to think, rather than shoving info into your head.
Nice man. Very intelligent, thoughtful. I enjoy phil, but took literary philosophy, and was forced to read about natives who crap thunder. No joke. Terrible course, but good professor.
An intelligent man who amuses himself and about half his students during class. The topic was Ethics and his "Socratic" (i.e. pushing students' unsteady arguments to their absurd conclusions) approach worked well. Grades based somewhat on favori
A communist in disguise. If you make any comment to disrupt his glorification of his socialist view he'll simply say you're wrong-no matter if everyone agrees w/ you. But he does give a course one can breeze through.
loved him. he was just a fun teacher, worth getting up for an 8:30 class.
He's on sabbatical this year, but I hope he's back soon. Disappointed that I can't take a course with him this semester. Best prof I've studied with in my two years at Cap College. He's enthusiastic, makes you think, and you don't have to agree with him to earn good grades.
One of Cap College's outstanding profs. He deals with the big questions about life and the universe, but he's not dogmatic. Encourages you to think for yourself. His classroom conversations are almost always exciting
Highly regarded in my books. Requires clarity and depth of thought for assignments. Hard work pays off. Book lists always cutting edge. As a speaker: engaging, curious, and entertaining. Since moved schools, but find I miss my classes with him. Additionally, he's a published writer. Great prof!
Very narcissistic guy..uses his classes as a platform so that he can talk about himself and how smart he is. He hates students challenging his veiws and he thinks we all listen to 50 cent?! And why all the comments about buckets of money? if he has buckets of money i would like my tuition money back because his class is a complete waste of my time.
easily the best teacher, and apparently most reknown faculty member at cap college.
This prof is exceptionally good. He's great at engaging my interest, he's very sincere about what he's teaching, and he manages to be funny, all at the same time.
Funny guy :P Smart guy.
A wonderful teacher -tries to point out to students that they can think for themselves. Funny and insightful class discussions. Highly recomend a class w/ Stan just to open up to other things.
Great class if you don't want to do anything but three papers. Worst teacher I've ever had. Got a good mark and never knew what his class was actually getting at. No direction! He thought students were slackers, hardly anyone showed up for class, but doesn’t realize we are not coming cuz he's boring. All my other phil classes were full all term.
I was just about to say what a great teacher Persky is when I noticed the unhappy student comment below. All I can say is here is a teacher who makes big questions about god, universe and self both clear and interesting. The student that didn't get it must have had his earphones stuck in his brain all semester.
Great teacher. Interesting. I enjoyed the discussions in class, save for the ones that droned on due to stubborn students who use circular arguments and Stan prodding them way too long. I also quite like the essay styles he requires - very real world. -- Pay attention. Do the readings. Participate. Know how to argue a point. USE LOGIC.
The 3 essays present good practice for constructing effective arguments. Classroom "discussions", though, are just bad; Persky essentially forces his students to sit and listen to him discuss himself throughout. Huge ego, and the odd scraps of relevant class material are uninteresting. Nonetheless, an easy 'A'.
Great teacher, totally interesting class. At the beginning of the course he says that philosophy is the most important subject and you think he's kidding. By the end of the term, you're pretty much persuaded that it is. Oh yeah, this prof also always arrives on term and is never absent, which you can't say about all the teachers.
Persky is extremely opinionated and hard-headed. He doesn't accept any view but his own and if you try and argue with him and bring up a good point he blows you off. I argued with him almost every day and his classes are SO boring - try and have something to say each class or you'll surely fall asleep. His class discussions are useless by the way.
His "discussions" are him talking for an hour, a couple interjections and done is done. When the conversation was interesting, the class was a great class; when the conversation was dull, I was waiting for the time to pass. With no exams and 3 essays on a chosen topic, easy grade as long as you show up regularily and speak up once in a while.
This guy is was once my favourite teacher ever but after 3 semesters he's managed to put himself near the bottom. While I once appreciated the fact that he'd point out how retarded our logic was, his classes turned from something educational into him sitting there berating students and reminding us we're idiots. I do like his book choices, though.
A very good prof. His class is always interesting and never has a "packaged" feeling. Makes you think for yourself. Lets you know what he thinks, but you're free to disagree with his views.
This class is utterly useless. All you do is show up, listen to one opinionated man who will shut you down if go against his views. He offers you very little help on to construct your essays and significatly drops your grades if he's simply not interested in your writing style. Avoid it and save your tuition for something else.
At the beginning of class, I really liked Persky, but now I see him as hard headed, egotistical and self centered. Any time i try and voice an idea i get shut down and he enjoys berating students, not to mention he hates anyone's ideas but his own. He keeps telling us we're all idiots and that he is the smartest guy alive.
I took Knowledge & Reality with Stan and wish I hadn't. Not only is he totally dull, you have no idea what he expects on essays. A select few take over discussions in his class as he just sits back and doesn't contribute his own wisdom to the subject at hand. I thought to myself, this class has got to be a joke! Unfortunately a cruel expensive one!
His class was boring and I wouldn't have even bothered coming at all if he didn't make participation worth 20%. DO NOT BUY THE TEXT. He only uses the first chapter and you don't even have to read that. Essay expectations are not given and then you are penalized for not meeting his expectations.
Persky is one of the most knowledgable people i have met, but he ahs not interest in any opinion other than that of his own. yOU DONT REALLY get the chance to speak and if you make an opinion he will shut it down, but there are no exams and its easy to get a B in on his essays, impossible to get an A. if you wanna hear someone smart talk then take
His teaching style is lazy and uninspiring. Worse, he is often cruel to students. I mean truly cruel, in that there is no reason for his comments-often made under his breath-other than his own amusement. I also have a hunch that his personal philosophies are all self serving. He strikes me as a real coward, not a truth seeking philosopher. It
Stan is the worst prof I've ever had @ Capilano. He bookends arguments by belittling anyone who may question his beliefs. Uninspiring to say the least. Most disappointing class I've taken.. Please avoid at all costs !
Intelligent, passionate and able to force students to think. Excellent
hes okay. marks hard on essay. all about the breaks. can be funny but very opinionated. class is pointless but you get participation marks. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!
Stan is great. He does not suffer fools, and does not have a whole lot of respect for most of the people in his class, but there is something fun about the circus-like atmosphere , and the truth is, if you can write worth a damn, you will get an A. Most people who don't like him are just sour grapes because he gave them a C on a crap paper
He's friendly and funny. Easy to pass or get a high mark. Have to do 3 essays over the term but no tests and it's pretty easy to pass the essay even by just regurgitating a topic from the book. No laptops allowed... so don't take the 3 hour one with him if you can't sit and concentrate that long like I couldn't.
Stan really engages his students and gets them to think. I recommend this class.
such a funny guy
He is a really great guy and has great ideas. He is quite funny. No midterms or finals. Just 3 papers and participation marks. Unfortunately he is a pretty hard marker. You need to write quite a bit and make sure its really in depth in the topic you're writing on.
Terrific teacher!
Totally interesting class.
He really knows how to make the big questions about life totally interesting. Very engaging prof. I would be glad to take other courses with him.
A very thoughtful man. If you think philosophy is "dry," you should take a course with him.
Funny professor, hard marker on papers. No midterm of finals. Many of his comments on the papers were to use his "book" as references. Very judgemental and always thinks that he is right.
Very engaging and funny prof, but his course is really serious. The course is pretty easy to pass, but getting a top grade requires work. This isn't one of those sit in the back of the classroom and goof off electives.
Probably my fault for taking his Monday morning 8am 3 hour class... makes it very tough to focus. He lectures the entire class, with students interjecting thoughts here and there. Good class to take if you are interested in philosophy, but do not take just as an elective. Not an easy marker. 3 essays on any topic of your choice, no exams.
I took his Phil of Crim and Constitution Law years ago. He one of the best professors I've ever had. He was always available, had great debates in class, and was very engaging. A lot of people in the class whined that he was a hard marker but I aced both classes without a problem. Just make sure your papers are interesting and entertaining.
I signed up for this course because a friend told me he's one of the star professors at Cap. Prof. P. lives up to his billing. He makes philosophy really interesting and he makes it clear that you don't have to agree with his views. He wants us to do our own thinking. Very good class.
The most interesting course I've so far taken at university. Great teaching!
this guy is really interesting and funny but needs to ease up on his marking. really tough marker
Nice enough teacher. Marks papers hard. Keeps telling class how lazy kids are these days because of electronics and that is why they are handing in crappy papers. He needs to realize these are first year students and quality of high school education will vary. Dont' read text. He will read it to you..yawn. knowledgeable.interesting discussions
Don't take a class with this guy. He's a brutal marker and doesn't have any guideline on what you should base your essay on. It usually turns out to be a bland papep. His high expectations out of his PHIL 100 students is ridiculous. Very biased. But that's what you get when you take philosophy since it is not a concrete science. Opinionated at best
Terrific teacher, great course. He expects students to work hard, but he works hard too. All my essays were graded and returned within a week. You can't say that about most profs here.
A course with interesting questions about life and a prof who knows how to explain the issues. Really good.
Enjoyable course, excellent prof, but more than that, he cares about his students. When I had a major family crisis this semester, he was supportive and patient. I think that's what got me through.
Interesting discussions, everything from abortion to the occupy movement. I was expecting something pretty dry. Nice surprise.
Stan is a great teacher. He does talk quite a bit, but he is very interesting to listen to and knows what he is talking about! He challenges his students by allowing them to choose their own essay topics and expects them to do reading wihout it being assigned. This class was enlightening and changed the way I think about the world.
Terrific course. Teacher treats students like adults. None of that "thank you for sharing" babytalk. He likes students to think for themselves.
Best prof i've ever had. Highly recommend him. Don't buy the text, you never use it. Going into Uni I wasn't especially interested in Phil but now it really captured me due to his teachings!
Went Into the course with a true interest in Philosophy. Came out very disappointed. He taught only his point of view on the matter, which was narrow enough. Learned very little about the course topic and instead rambled about how great he was. His basic attitude was that if you held a view opposing his, you were incompetent.
Great course, really interesting. Prof got our papers back on time which is pretty unusual.
Very lively, enjoyable course.
First-rate course. Totally interesting. The essays are not easy to write but, yes, it's true, the prof really does get them back to you on time. Very unusual.
The most interesting course I've taken at Cap U. The prof is really good at explaining ideas.
This is a course that combines literature and philosophy; one of the most fascinating classes I've taken. Lots of discussion. Terrific prof. I felt like we were talking about important things for our lives.
Took his class 2 years ago because my high school buddy wants to take the course with me. So I just attended the class, only to find that this guy constantly shuts me up with a gesture that says "too loud" In fact, his punchline is just that my class is constantly distracted with XXX on the Internet that it stopped being funny 3 Wednesdays later...
I took a course with Mr. Persky last year and I'm taking another one this year. An excellent teacher IMHO.
Absolutely dread going to this class, it's all just boring debates. He tells us to not be biased but he is biased himself. The papers leave you clueless due to the fact that it is open topic with little to no guidelines. He is a difficult marker, always end up receiving C's. Never taking philosophy again.
Excellent teacher. The course is about big, important questions about the meaning of our lives. The most relevant course I've taken this year. And the prof is funny and gets the student's work back on time.
Liked the course a lot. It dealt with practical moral questions, how to think about them, etc. Prof very helpful.
Very good teacher. And classroom discussion was good, too.
Stan has purposely made his class very difficult to fail. As long as one hands in his required writings, they'll pass. Be prepared to sit through his repetitive and liberally opinionated speeches. He's a funny guy, and he knows his stuff, but he can be a real bore at times.
Really good teacher. No tests, just essays, which makes sense for this kind of course. All about gods, beliefs, language, minds, ourselves. I liked it a lot.
One of the best courses I've taken at university. Very helpful prof, always available.Returns essays promptly, too.
Thanks for a really good course. Good prof, made things very clear.
Amazing prof! Lectures can be a little strung along but after a 3 hour lecture-based class, topics still flow with ease. Class participation is up to you. Stan is easy to communicate with and helpful if you need help in any way. Very successful and inspirational man, love hearing his opinions on the world. Highly recommend this class!
Great class.
If you need to take a Phil class , take ethics with Stan. You don't get any testsexams, only three essays which are fairly easy to write if you enjoy ranting and are good in the English department. Every class discussion is relevant and also very interesting. He's hilarious too.
I barely showed up to class and Stan noticed every time and would make a comment, class is easy since I just started Uni and wasn't really sure what to do, he doesn't have any tests, just 3 different essays spread throughout the semester on your own topics, show up and you'll be fine
Stan is a nice man but I didnt like him as a prof.I took phil 222(phil of culture) & was genuinely very excited about this topic but didnt end up learning much. He rambled on in class about irrelevant subjects and his lectures were very unstructured. He assigned 6 books for reading and 3 essays during the semester which is a ridiculous course load
Stan is one of my favourite profs. I had him for Ethics and Phil. Of Culture. He forces you to think and doesn't believe in spoon feeding. If you want a class to get by on autopilot, he isn't for you. If you want a class that will make you think and improve your writing skills, go for it. He will make the same jokes from one semester to the next.
A terrific course that was about things that mattered and, as Stan says, wasn't "just about how to sell pizza."
Most inspiring teacher I had at Cap while taking Philosophy of Law. The class discussions were on point. The papers were graded for interest in writing. I loved having Stan.
