Does not keep the debate environment safe for all opinions.
I like him A LOT as a person, but get alittle confused during the lectures.
With only two final getting a b is diificult. He is not clear to what is on the final and the questions themselves are not clear. It is very difficult.
Friendly, but doesn't present information in an organized manner.
GREAT teacher. Lectures are interesting and informative. Never any suprises on exams, and answering extra credit questions on exams always got you at least a few points.
fun class to be in, but watch out for his exams
His night Hist 171 class is the class to take. He is the nicest teacher I have ever had, and tthe tests are 100% from the lectures. You really can't beat that.
Relates material well to current happenings. Easy to pay attention to. Easy tests.
He is a really good teacher....lectures are ok...history isnt very interesting to me but i chould sit through it and the tests are kinda hard ask him for exactly whats on it hell help u as much as he can!
really good teacher, i like him a lot. very nice, even when i came in missing the first 2 days of class.
kept my attention for two and a half hours and made history very relevant & interesting.. highly recommended.
He's got a great sense of humor and made class a joy to go to even if the material was dry at times. Doesn't use boring powerpoint slides, so that was very refreshing even if notetaking was a little more challenging. And he's a very handsome gentleman :)
He is a great teacher and fun to listen to. I like his way of teaching and look forward to being in his class in the spring.
Dr. Arnold is awesome! He relates current events to past events, helping you tie things together. The first exam was wretchid, but the final was a piece of cake. He also offered extra credit to help boost grades. He can relate sports to anything.
Great guy, great teacher, sexy man. Think its probly the best teacher for history. Interesting and i think has good lectures. Go Temple!
Very funny and nice.
He is soo awesome! I hated History before this class, and now I love it. I haven't been bored once in that class all semester. He's hilarious!
this man is amazing
TAKE SPORT HISTORY, great class, informative and anyone can relate if you have ever been pationate about or been involved in any sport ever in your life!!! One paper on the sport or controversy of your choice, mid-term and final! GREAT GUY, FUNNY!
Awesome teacher...he made everything so interesting and he's hilarious...but the tests are brutal
Awesome teacher....really funny and he makes the class interesting, but the tests are brutal.
Awesome teacher! I am so glad I got him for this class. It is really helpful how he relates the past with the present. Take his classes!
Easy class, good clear speaking teacher. Almost gave all the answers for the final exam. Attendence is taken and is counted for part of the grade but class is not boring. The tests were easy and we had to do 2 short, easy papers.
THE BEST TEACHER!! I have always hated history with a passion until I had him for class!!! I loved going to his class!
Very nice, intelligent, an easy A unless you don't attend class, never pay attention and don't care about what he is teaching. Smart, funny, and handsome too.
Funny Guy. You probably could skip some of the lectures, but you won't because he makes them so interesting. Also makes lots of sports references in an American History class, so if you like sports, the lectures are good.
great teacher, tests are very specific.
Well, he IS hilarious, but he was a bit unclear about the first exam. Everyone did poorly. I aced all my papers and did all the extra credit and got a 145% (yes, it was possible) on teh final and he still gave me a "B" -- I fought it and got my "A" eventually. My feelings are mixed.
Most of these comments are innacurate. He is not funny, he tries to be. Dr. Arnold grades tests just like a medical doctor. No matter how good your test is, something is going to be wrong. Do I regret taking this class? NO. Would I take another one of Stan's classes? NO. He is mediocre at best.
I think that his test are evil he is a nice guy but he grades like you are a professional history major the midterm was very blunt and tough i dont think i would take the class again because of the toughness of it. I feel that for first year college students that this class is way to tough
He was a hard teacher no doubt. Got a D on the first exam, A's on all the papers and essays and then aced the final. Ended up with an A in the class. He definately knows his history and makes class interesting. All in all, though the class was hard, it was fair. This is college, its going to be hard
Seriously, as long as you show up to class and pay a little bit of attention to the lectures you will do fine in this course. Arnold is a funny guy and makes class enjoyable. He gives you study guides that tell you exactly what he is going to cover on the tests. The paper & book review are cake. A+
Attendance counted, but it was a fun class to go to. A little bit of a tough grader.
Dr. Arnold is an awesome teacher and his lectures aren't bad. He keeps you interested by relating history to today. His tests are kind of hard, but as long as you pay attention in class you'll do fine. I would definately recommend taking him.
arnold is my favorite!
i thought he was a great teacher. the papers were ridiculously easy. the tests are real strange though. the midterm and final cover a very small portion of what is taught. and as far as the hard grading, it is the TAs. I doubt Arnold even looks at anything turned in.
Arnold is a witty and interesting teacher for a subject that can be very boring. Grab him if you can (and pay attention to his clothes!!).
He's awesome! My only lecture class and I didn't fall asleep. He kept me interested. Go Arnold! Arnold for president! :)
Awesome teacher...Strongly recommend him...Also very funny...
Arnold is the best history teacher. He can take anything and relate it to history. I had him twice i would definatley recommend him to anyone who loves history and anyone who doesn't.
Easily the best History instructor at NIU. I'd like to see more than two exams in his classes, but the papers are manageable and there is ample time to complete them. Brings in a lot of humor and popular culture references which students can easily understand/enjoy.
awesome. i found this class to be pretty easy because he made it really interesting. probably one of the few classes that i really didn't dread going to during the semester i took it
He is really cool and nice. Attendance counts as a grade and it takes a lot of reading to prepare for test. Besides that, it's interesting!
Great teacher. A little weird but makes it fun.
great professor. pretty funny and has realistic expectations for a gen-ed. not too much work involved. just make sure you pay attention during lecture.
Great professor, definitely made class interesting. His tests were a little difficult, but as long as you keep up with the material, take notes, and go to class, it's not too bad
Great teacher, interesting class, overall is a cool guy, also brings cool tunes to class at times. The only minuses would be - his midterm study guide (at least for HIST 469) was all but useless, and he is lackluster at answering back emails. Otherwise -- he gets an "A"
I took him for both sections because his class is great. Fun teacher and a really cool guy. Class is boring though, but he does offer a lot of extra credit on his tests. Study guides he gives are useless, but he really isn't trying to fail anyone. If you have to take 260 or 261, take him.
Best Hist. Teacher
Pretty cool. Study guides (when he hands them out) could be of better use tho.
i thought that he did a much better job teaching 261. even so, he is an awesome teacher with a pretty good sense of humor. his exams are pretty much straight from lecture, although they cover a small portion of what he goes over.
Interesting class, great teacher. Great class for anyone to take, when it is offered. When it's over, you'll actually miss not being able to go.

Exams are easy, but you need to do your readings and go to class to do well.
Exams are easy, but you need to do your readings and go to class to do well.
stan the man is the man
Mr arnold is amazing, he is so helpful and a great choice for freshmen to use. Just go to class and get notes, hes perfect

Study guides are a joke. Great teacher, interesting lectures, and nice tests.
This was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken
relaxing class with a really intelligent and funny teacher. i recommend any night-class with arnold.
Dr. Arnold is hilarious. He is one of the best professors I have had.
Arnold teaches an easy class because he tells you what to study before each exam on a study guide. (Midterm & Final). He also assigns two papers that aren't graded too easily. He teaches from a very liberal standpoint, so be ready to learn his opinions instead of Am. History. Attendence counts, so even though I have a high A,I'll prob get a B :(
awesome teacher. The class is really easy as long as you go and do the readings. He gives study guide for midterm and the final that tell you exactly what to study. and as long as you study from it, tests are easy. The 2 papers he assigns are graded tough. He has a good sense of humor.Great class overall, highly recommend.
Great teacher, SHOW UP... he takes off points for each absence. As long as you show up and pay attention, you'll do well. 2 writing assignments, 2 exams.
awesome lectures.. always come to class, and pay attention. if you're naturally interested in history this calss is not only interesteing but easier than one would think.
He knows what he's talking about, but something about the man just rubs me the wrong way. His class isn't difficult, though. The paper assignments are very easy-don't even seem college-level-and the tests aren't that bad either. Easy to get a good grade in his class, it seems. I just don't enjoy having him in particular as a professor.
3rd time taking him, favorite teacher at NIU, by far. He is funny and as long as you go to class you'll do very good. Easy homework assignments and pretty easy tests. I love this guy and plan to take him over the summer and in the fall cuz he's awesome!!
he looks like a simpsons cartoon, he is pretty easy final is take home, grinds his teeth after his own jokes, kinda reminds me of a serial killer, i would definitly take him again, he is an Easy teacher shows movies at every class night class 6-840 and we always get oyt by 740 i definitly recomend you take him if you need an easy A, oh he's HOT
Great teacher and class overall. He lectures a great deal but brings the students into it with questions, songs, and movies. There are 2 papers which are relativly easy and 2 tests which if you know what to study - and he makes sure you do - you will do really well. Take this class!
Fantastic speaker, makes his lecture fun & interesting. Two short papers to write, midterm & final exams. Read your text, show up, take notes and you'll do fine. Good sense of humor & very helpful instructor. I highly recommend him.
Stan the man is awesome. His lectures are entertaining (with movies, music, and discussion) and he is funny. Attendance is required, but coming to class is fun. There are only two short papers, the midterm, and final. He is a fair grader and the assignments are easy. Just be sure to take good notes.
This class was very entertaining. Make sure that you go everyday as there is a strict attendance policy, but the class is not boring whatsoever. I received a C mainly due to my lack of attendance and good note taking skills.
Dr Arnold is one of the best teachers at NIU. Never thought History could be made so fun.
Stan Arnold is a great teacher. The only thing u have 2 do is attend class (takes attendance everytime), two short papers to write, and a midterm and final (study guides provided).
Arnold is one of the best teachers on NIU soil, amen. Take anything you can with him, even if your major is not History and you need any other filler classes to complete your undergrad. **NOTE TO HIST MAJORS LOOKING FOR ANOTHER AWESOME TEACHER LIKE ARNOLD TO HELP FILL YOUR "PICK AND CHOSE" CREDITS -- TAKE MATT SWAN FOR ANYTHING IN THE COMMS DEPT!
So I definitely hate history with a passion because I don't care for it but Stan is awesome. He makes learning history very easy and fun by relating events to today's culture. All you have to do is show up for class and take notes and you will for sure pass!
Arnold is like that cool uncle that comes around every now and then. You must show up for class cuz he takes attendance, but if the class is big enough you can sneak out if you don't want to stay...but you will have no prob stayin cuz he's so funny. There's the mid term, final, and two (easy 2pg)papers. attendence is 15% of your grade! Final 35%
This being the 4th class taken with Arnold, I can't say enough about the man. Best prof as NIU! Take him regardless of major for a good class with a great teacher! Midterm, final, one reflection paper(3-5pgs) and one final paper 8-10pgs. Got an A.
Stan the man! He is the best teacher. He makes class fun very fun! As long as you go to class and sign in you will be fine. He gives you a study guide before every exam with pretty much everything you need to know on there. I didn't really take notes or by the book and googled everything from the study guide and got an A on the exams! HE ROCKS!
Great professor. His class was surprisingly interesting, even if you don't like history. I wouldn't say its the easiest class. The tests are essay format, so you do actually have to know your stuff. It involves a little bit of work, but you should be able to get an A if you attend class. He was a nice guy and played some cool music and video clips.
Stan is the man
One of the classes where I didn't feel like I was going to fall asleep everyday. Shows good movies/documentaries, makes it interesting. 3 exams, participation and one paper
I ALWAYS enjoy going to his class. He's a great man with a good sense of humor, which makes class interesting! He cares about students (He still remembers me from a year ago)! I absolutely love him! Lectures could be mroe clear & organized but as long as you study, you'll get an A. Oh, HE'S EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE-Which is motivation to come to class!
Overall an awesome professor! Classes can be somewhat boring but he always comes in whistling and he always has funny jokes. 3 tests which arent bad at all. 1 paper which isnt hard and attendance thats all that matters! If you want to learn a little and get a good grade this is the guy to go to!
Good teaccher makes things very intresting. Relates a lot of things to sports. And is pretty stylish.
best professor ever. 2 exams, 2 short papers. easy grading. whatever is on his reviews is on the exams, what is unclear is obvious. very easy going and helpful, need help just ask! no reason anyone should have less than an A
Loved this teacher! If you ever have to take history I definitely recommend him. You learn a lot and he makes class a ton of fun! You get 2 absences and he takes attendance almost every class but showing up is fun. Final and midterm are easy and the papers are easy too.

This teacher is cool. The study guide is the test. It is very easy, taking notes in mandatory because it will be on the test. He pretty cool and his assignments are easy.
Take him. His lecturing abilities are some of the best. I dare you to be bored.
Stan is Indeed the Man. Awesome professor; not a difficult class IF you pay attention and read the book. Buy the books if you want an A. Entertaining lecturer also. A few easy reviews and some attendance thrown in there. If you're looking for a solid gen ed/ elective this take Arnold.
good teacher for the most part, though material is a little boring. if you paid attention in high school u.s. history you will do fine in this class. gives you the terms to know for the tests a few days before. very cool guy, hopefully i can take one of his class that is more interesting basic u.s. history
Great teacher, one of the best history teachers at NIU. He's really cool and very helpful! Hope to take another class with him.
Really boring class, but fairly easy as long as you study and understand the materials
Stan the Man!! Not too hard of a class..pretty boring, but he tries to add humor into his lectures. Very easy grader on papers. Takes attendance.
Dr. Arnold is a good teacher and easy grader. Three papers 2-3 pages in length. Midterm and final are fairly simple. Study and you will get an A!
The best history professor I've had at NIU. Makes class interesting, and he really knows his stuff.
I love love love this man.. I wish I could've taken him for more classes.. so helpful, interesting and brilliant. He's so passionate, caring and easy to talk to. He really makes class enjoyable. Plus, he's a total fox. I would absolutely recommend him!!!
Nice guy but boring, and he assigns at least 20 pages to read EVERY DAY. The midterm review guide was very vague. It was not specific at all. I studied all week for the midterm and was clueless on his essay portion. Dropped it right away. Hope you can comprehend what he says because your notes are what you write and he speaks fast.
If you want to learn anything about history don't take this course. If you want an easy A for a Gen Ed this course is perfect. The key is learning how to work the system for this course, as long as you sound like you know what you're talking about in your essay's you'll get an A. I barely studied or stayed awake in class and did just that.
I took Arnold for 260 & 261. 260 was tougher for me, because the material is extremely dry. His TA's for the class grade extremely tough compared to 261. Takes attendance every class, you can only miss 5, then your grade suffers. Go to class, keep up with the readings, the exams can be pretty tough. Arnold is a great professor though.
I regret taking this class soooo much. Ratemyprofessor was so wrong. He speaks extremely fast and uses no power points so you just have to take notes quickly about everything he says, which is difficult because he jumps all over the place. The midterm and final are both essay tests, and the T.A's grade them very strictly.
Great Prof! Always had interesting material and the class discussions were very fun. Would def recommend him!
Dr. Arnold is a great professor. If you can't pay attention in class then it is difficult. If you arn't a good writer then it is not an easy A because responses are 30% of your grade and it takes effort. He is a great professor that knows his stuff and I recommend this class to anyone that needs a history course. Sit up front and you will enjoy
this class was hard i don't think the TA liked me vary much but prof Arnold was an interesting man he did not really cover the material in the book in his random lectures so if you don't read and understand what you read its impossible to pass also you have to have well developed writing skills don't be vague when explaining things!!
Great prof. Hes a funny guy and always keeps his lectures interesting.
Funny and easy going professor. There is barely any homework besides reading ad you dont even have to do that because you go over it the next day in class
Great professor! He gives lectures and covers a lot so make sure you are ready to take notes. His exams, and papers are fair. I've never seen anyone fall asleep during his class, interacts with students, and is very down-to-earth..Definitely one of my favorite classes!:)
He is awesome! Have to go to class because he takes attendance every day. He usually let's class ut 20 mInutes early and he is hilarious. Take him if you can! Easy grader and fairly easy tests!
This teacher is really boring, but you have to go to class because he takes attendance every day. He grades the papers VERY easily. His tests are really short, so you must understand the material to get an A on it. He runs off in tangents a lot and doesn't explain things well, but if you try hard and read the book its an easy A.
He takes attendance, you have to pay attention to the class because he can veer off sometimes but you have to be a good note taker... throws comedy into the class so it was very fun and not dry all the time like other History classes... recommended
He's a fun guy, just go to class and use his study guides and you'll pass with an A
He's a good guy, with entertainment in his lectures. Too bad there's little that he says that you actually see on his tests. The tests aren't that hard, but you're poorly prepared. If he's a doctor, than I'm a neurosurgeon
Easy class, but very hard to sit through and pay attention. Papers are easy, exams are somewhat difficult. Study guides before final and midterm are very helpful. About 90% of the stuff he writes on the board can go in one ear and out the other. Very old school with grading.
I had high expectations for this class & was very disappointed. Dr. Arnold NEVER returns emails, doesn't post to Black Board when he says he will, and when he does it's cryptic. He lacks interest in his students! It's a shame he's teaching this course because the reading material was interesting, but he doesn't know how to teach the class - tragic!
Was not a fan of this class or teacher at all! He is not helpful knowing he will never email you back. There are no power points and he just talks the entire time. He give a huge general study guide out when your 2 exams are literally 12 questions. I hated this class and dreaded going to it!
Easy going professor. Plays good music during class. Do the papers, use the study guides, and you'll be fine.
Professor Arnold is a great teacher and has been one of the best at NIU for years now. He's funny at times and tries to make things interesting and understandable. He's not the type to kick a student out for texting and stuff which is cool. He has 2-3 written assignments and 2 exams, so make sure you do your work and study.
cool guy, makes class interesting. you're only allowed to miss a certain amount of classes. tests kinda hard, gives EC though. really enjoyed the class
In reality, he's a good teacher; the man has a doctorate so I'm sure he knows what he's doing. His teaching style is pretty different, he tries to engage the class. he's pretty lenient on things like texting. the writing assignments aren't hard at all but i advise you see the TA's for help studying for the midterm and final.
I hated this class. Although the exams were not that bad and he provided good study guidelines, the overall structure of the class has absolutely no structure. There are no powerpoints, lecture outlines or anything! He just stands at the front of the classroom and goes on a tangent about whatever he wants (often time it is not realted to class).
He was a very awesome teacher! I have taken his class twice and made sure to get him the second time. His lessons are easy to follow along, and tests are easy as well. I rarely skim the book and just look over notes to prepare for tests. He is a must!
Professor Arnold is someone who definitely knows what he is talking about, which is good considering he has a doctorate. His lecture form is somewhat different and he tries to engage his students a lot, which doesn't always work out that great. Pay attention to the things he says in class and ask his TA for help. His tests are somewhat difficult.
Dr. Arnold is able to make the lectures in HIST260 interesting. As long as you attend class and listenpay atttention, you will do good on the tesst. A lot of the tests relate to things he discusses during class. As long as you pay attention you will have no problem getting an A.
Arnold was a great guy. His lectures are usually pretty funny but they are not always on topic. He assigns readings for every class but they do not really come up until the midterm and final. His study guides are more helpful than they look, take the time to fill them out. You can only miss 5 classes before your grade is lowered.
Solid choice for a professor. Nice, fairly good grader, and gives opportunities throughout the semester for extra credit. Pretty good overall. Lectures are important, sometimes will say whats on the tests. Show up and takes notes and you'll pass.
He's a pretty funny guy and makes class enjoyable. One problem I had was that his lecture is just him talking and writing some key terms on the board. It's up to you to listen and write down what he says. This makes it pretty hard to keep track of everything he says and you also are not totally sure what to write down. Don't underestimate the tests
We honestly did not do much in the class itself, but we learned a lot about how to do Oral History. It felt that we just sat around and talked about random stuff. Turn in your research project and you'll pass.
His lectures consisted of him talking about events in history and then trying to connet them to our lives today, most of the time we just had big class discussions. He gives a study guide for the exams and its very broad and unhelpful. He grades his papers easily though. You shouldnt skip class if you want an A as attendance is mandatory.
He wasn't back. He just talked about nothing to much, and never, I mean never, return a single email I sent him. I'm saying like 30 or so email. His TAs were not the brightest and they made up information to help them sway arguments, when called out they yelled and left class. They were probably the worst thing about his class.
Dr. Arnold is someone people either love or hate. As a history major, his lectures were great, however, if you don't pay attention to lectures, and take good notes, it might be hard to pass the midterm/finals. Very up front of the guidelines. Did take attendance as well.
Dr Arnold was a great professor, but you definitely have to be willing to participate in the class in order to really learn a lot - his lectures tend to go off in weird directions sometimes. No quizzes, two regular papers, a research project, and an in class presentation. Show up, try hard, and ask questions if necessary and it'll be an easy A.
This professor knows what he's talking about. I highly recommend listening to his lectures because he gets the class involved. There was two papers, an oral paper, and two exams for your grade. Extra Credit is offered if you mess up the midterm.
Dr. Arnold had never taught this class before and it showed. I think he is a nice guy, but Illinois history was not his forte.
Incredible lectures. You may find his long pauses and his seemingly off topic points he throws out to be annoying but he always finds out a way to bring it back to something important and insightful. He can be a hard grader when it comes to exams but there is always opportunities for extra credit. Take his classes!
Loved this class and him as a Professor
Professor Arnold's lectures can be unconventional, but engaging if you stay focused. The exams are challenging, but he offers extra credit opportunities. Attendance is mandatory, and the textbook is useful. I found unstuckstudy helpful for study prep alongside other resources.
lots of extra credit available, only a few papers and exams throughout the semester, no homework
