What a nut!! But funny. He does lecture fast, but it's all in the textbook, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the lectures!

You will not regret taking this course with Dr. Coren. He is funny and passionate about his work. If you are taking Psyc 100 make sure you take it with him.

Best prof of all the psyc intro classes. read before classes so you'll know what you don't have to copy down, he blitzes through the notes. Very interesting lectures, knows his stuff. loves dogs, has a dog show on TV

love the dog info! about the hotness factor... he looks warm in the lecture hall. +) do your damn reading though, or you'll be sorry!

Really funny, entertaining & memorable classes. I missed it when it was over. Classes go by very quickly though so read the chapters ahead of time to keep up. Tests are always m/c and and quite straightforward if you've read the text and payed attention.

Wow....Coren is the best prof ever. He was my favourite prof in first year. His lectures are extremely fast paced, so if you don't do your readings beforehand, you'll get really lost. And his exams are completely and totally fair. No trick questions.

He's a great prof who knows how to manage a huge-sized class with a balance between humour and informative PowerPoint lecture notes. Just read the textbook. For goodness sake, read the textbook before you come to class.

He is a really funny and interesting professor. However, he goes through his powerpoint slides too fast... I could never keep up. Love his dog books but I haven't seen "Good Dog!" yet...

Awesome Professor. His classes are never boring. My advice is "PRE-READ" because he goes extremely fast. Or better yet, bring a digital camera to take pics of his note, because you won't believe how fast he goes. Other than that, he's funny and

really really fun class..it's the only class i never fall asleep in and actually undertand stuff. definitely read the material cuz you'll know what to write down and what not to. definitely one of the best teachers/profs i had :D

He is an absolutly wonderful prof. He's helped me to decide on a degree in psyc, that's how good he is. He's funny, entertaining, and you definately will not fall asleep in his class. A great guy.

Ditto to all the fast paced comments. Make sure you write the important stuff. Avoid copying down graphs cuz it will be from the text book. SAves you time. He's awesome...very entertaining even at 8am. Knows EXACTLY what he's talking about ALL the time.

My best prof ever! Starting off the lectures with a feature on a breed of dog is unique - definitely his trademark. I don't think I've learned as much in any class as in that one.

great prof. he actually has his own website: stanleycoren.com. i found out he got his ph.d from stanford and he's been on shows likeoprah, cnn, nbc, etc, all the tv networks you can name. and he's got stuff published in the new england journal of medicine

I think he's a great prof! He's really funny and he makes all his lectures interesting. The powerpoint notes he uses are also quite amusing coz they actually have sound effects! He's the only prof I've ever seen students applaud for at the end of term!!

really interesting lectures but goes really fast! tests are all mc but still hard. as a sidenote, he insults cats almost every lecture...if you're a cat person, be prepared!!

at first i was like i hope this class is easy. then when i got a few of my tests back they turned out to be mediocre. you can get an A if you go to class, take down most of the powerpoint notes and read the text. be diligent and you will do really well

SERIOUSLY just pre-read the text and go to classes and take notes and be awake and you'll do FINE. he's hilarious and very clear, so there's no reason why people shouldn't do well if they read the matieral before going to the class.

He's the best prof I've had so far. His lectures are very entertaining! It's easy to do well in his class if u stay on tract of your reading & do the study guide. All tests are m/c & there are no finals kuz the finals are just like regular midterms =)

Dr Coren is a genuinely sweet guy. His lectures are always interesting, and he is entertaining. He cares about his students, and if called upon, will go to great lengths for them. He's hands-down the best prof. I've had at UBC so far. :)

Wow, he was recommended to me and now I recommend him to anyone wanting to ENJOY psyc 100. He's interesting, funny, knowledgable, and uses power point with sound effects and visual stuff...oh, and did I mention all this adoration was for an 8AM CLASS?

tell ya one thing: psyc 100 rocked!! And to those that say that he goes too fast with his notes? I say READ THE TEXTBOOK beforehand...a lot of the stuff he skips over is covered.

I really enjoyed having Dr. Coren as a prof. Just like everyone else said... if you read the text book and pay attention you will easily do well in his class.

Coren is mean in the funny way. His lectures are relatively enjoyable. The first 2 months were very boring but it gets increasingly interesting. Exams are quite easy to get a B but tough to get an A.

Fun teacher. Brings his dog to class, makes obviously wrong, but funny, choices for test. Very entertaining.

Taking this course right now and loving it. I mean LOVING it. For one, the textbook that Coren uses (chosen probably because it mentions him like 20 times) is easy to read, and he expands on the stuff you need to know, everything's covered!! Midterms are EASY. EASY EASY EASY MIDTERMS!!!

Pay attention and read the book and the midterms are pretty easy. He is very informative and funny in a weird sorta way. Highly reccommened, loved this class so much it's why I decided to major in Psych.

Dr. Coren is brilliant. His lectures were incredible. I can't do multiple choice questions for the life of me, so unfortunately the class structure didn't work to my advantage.

Personally, I love this prof, who likes dog very much. Best dressed, funny and promote my interest in psychology. Although you need to take some time study for the exam, it really makes you want to learn. Highly recommended.

Amazing professor! His use of powerpoint, video clips, and animation is a great accompaniment to his lectures, but he is so interesting I bet he'd be able to hold onto everyone's attention without it. I learned a lot, and the textbook is a great, funny read! My little sister even enjoyed reading it!

Great prof, very smart and knowledgeable. I studied VERY hard for tests and never managed to get higher than 84%, they require a lot of memorization of facts...but if you're good with memorizing, go for it! It is a great class.

Best prof I had this year. Incredibly in touch with how to teach first-years, ENTIRLEY MC exams (non-cumulative), 4% for HSP credit, and funny to boot. Had him at 8:00 am and he was great. The stuff he tests on isn't entirely text, so stop complaining and just stay awake in his class...duh!! Take notes, review 'em, listen, and have a great time!!!!

What an awesome teacher! Completely animated, interesting material, involves the class, BRINGS HIS DOG IN to demonstrate learning techniques, great powerpoint notes, and knows how to do what a good psychologist would: make me like the class.

Yikes, first years don't know what a gift Coren is! Seriously, compare him with most of the other first year psyc profs...he's great! He tries to make class more than just the facts fired at you, so you know, just take it as it comes...there's MUCH worse profs at UBC...just wait...

Okay so I see a lot of people are complaining about how approachable Coren is, the fact of the matter is when he is as good as he is at lecturing who cares if he is approachable. This class is a joke, go to class stay awake and you will do fine! If your looking for your prof to be your friend look somewhere else.

Gives amazing lectures that are able to hold your attention for the entire class (not an easy feat when the section is 1.5 hours long!). Makes psychology interesting and personally applicable. Overall, an awesome prof!

I love this class. Just take down all the lecture notes and read the assigned chapters and you will do GREAT. I never study regularly and only start doing the readings couple days before each exam and got above 85% on the 2 exams we've had. Tests are all multiple choice and are easy if you've read text. TAKE THIS CLASS, you won't regret it.

Great teacher - sort of ****ed at times, but it's excusable since it all seems to be for the sake of humour. Tests are very fair, you could easily pass by just doing the readings and ignoring the in-class notes, but if you do both you'll get a great mark. He also seems to have a dog fetish.

From what I hear, all the other psych 100 teachers SUCK. He's hillarious, and actually knows what he's talking about. Great teacher, but the way he uses the word "sexy" makes the course worth taking in itself. "Look at this sexy bar graph." Hillarious.

Coren reminds me of Dr. Phil at times. Haha! He's the best professor I had for first year. Doesn't post notes online so be prepared to write shorthand, otherwise get a laptop or a camera to take his notes. His exams are do-able. So prepare to pre-read before lectures. Overall, the best you could get for first-year PSYC. Plus, he loves dogs too.

Great prof, very engaging, has an amazing history, very interesting character. He has pretty much been on every talk show you can think of and has his own show about dogs. Tests are non-cumulative m/c, and are very doable (although there are some references to class notes). I would've liked to get to know him as a prof if he wasn't so intimidating.

Great guy. Go to all of his classes. Focus on both lectures and readings (mostly lectures). You gotta love the dog stories (Dancer showed up once). The ONLY problem with this guy is that he like Phil Collins... ALOT. You'll see what I mean...

Best prof i've ever had at UBC, engaging lectures, very funny prof. The material you learn is very applicable to daily life. You only get 4 MC exams for the entire year. Exams are fair, just go to class, read the text and learn the terms. Sometimes he uses questions from the online quizzes provided from the text book website. soo study those.

Coren is a celeberty, he has lunch with the presidents of the U.S. Obviously this guy is a genius, hes retired now though so to bad for anyone that wanted to take this class!

His tests are all m/c. I'd recommend bringing a laptop to class though because he goes through his powerpoints quite fast and doesn't post them online. Basically though, just read the textbook and pay attention to the lecture notes and you'll do fine.

This prof is fun and great at keeping the topic interesting. He obviously really cares about the topic. He makes a subject that could be really dry quite interesting. He doesn't appear to be approachable, but to be honest do you need that in first year?? Just study the Text and mainly his notes (helps to type notes so you can keep up with him).

Dr. Coren is a very experienced speaker and often keeps the class intrigued. He has definitely peaked my interest in Psychology. Best of all, his class only contains 4 exams, each worth 25%. These are mc exams. There are no assignments. He really does teach effectively and it's a shame that he'll be retiring soon.

AMAZING man =D goes through slides pretty fast but if you've read the text beforehand, no big deal, really funny, loves his dogs (they're sooo cute), all m/c test, not too hard if you really love psych, I love this course, I love this prof, definitely recommend taking this but don't if you're gonna slack off: you need to stay on top of things =)

Coren is referenced in the course textbook, you just know he has to be good! Exams are fair, all multiple choice, but not a walk in the park. Gives engaging lectures and effective examples. Never a dull moment.

the best prof i had in first year, yes he goes by his slides very quickly but my suggestion would be to take the notes by hand anyway,(seriously are you going to go back and look at your photos of his slides?) his lecture notes take up 30% or so of his test and if he's going to skim through the slides so quickly it obviously means its not important

I wanted to major in psych and he made me completely change my mind. There are 4 m/c tests worth 25% that are SO hard to pass. The class was scaled over 10% on EVERY test. Lectures are funny and engaging and its quite clear that he loves teaching, but unless you're able to memorize hundreds of cue cards, stay away.

Prof Coren runs a hard course. He does go through his slides quickly, but if you've read the textbook before class (as recommended) you'll be able to keep up. His quirks are quirky, but it keeps the lectures interesting. Your mark is based upon 4 m/c tests, which may be good or bad based on personal opinion.

ONE OF THE BEST PROFS you will ever have. Midterms could be tricky but if u readhis notes and do the readings, you should get an A. I did!

Absolutely hilarious.

Surprisingly hilarious, he makes the subject really interesting to learn about. But better bring a camera or laptop because you definitely won't be able to copy down what's on the slides in 10 seconds. Also, his exams aren't too bad as long as you read your stuff.

Very smart teacher, knows his stuff for sure. Goes through notes super fast so you better have lightning fingers or a camera, i had a camera and it was very useful. You could ultimately not attend class and just read the textbook and do fine in this class

I attend UVic and never actually took one of his classes, but I read his latest book and curiosity brought me here. If you UBC freshmen want advice, read his book. You'll love Flint and his antics.

He is a world class lecturer, and dog lover. Take his course if you are going to take psyc 100. You don't want to miss out on stories about how he met Jean Piaget as a graduate student, and how he was a friend to B.F. Skinner.
