Do not take him if you can help it. His overbearing attitude about his opinions is thinly veiled by bad humor. So far he has not done anything terribly unfair, but his tests are very hard and often tricky.
There's something attractive about his "crocodile hunter" attire for everyday wear, but only from a far distance. Hard tests, but not unreasonable.
He is the devil
Avoid if at all possible, for all the aforementioned reasons.
HARD TEST!! Exams are evil. Other course work is easy.
Great peacock dance. Horrible lectures.
Hard tests. Attend lab, and you have nothing to worry about.
very interesting
Soo boring. The hardest part of the class is staying awake in the auditorium.
Wish I had the lab instructor instead of him...she barely speaks english but you can still understand her better than him. Boring, dreadful, and add your own adjectives. Hope I never have a class with him ever again. Or I am liable to die. ZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!
This is the worst class I've had at UT so far. If you can get into another biology class, do it! He's very unclear and gives tests on subject matter that is not in the notes or the book. You'd have to be a genius to pass the tests...and I was my high school Valedictorian. :(
horrible teacher

Tests are difficult, coursework is easy. He has a small curve I think. If you read the material and generally understand it and go to lab and do well there you shoulodn't have any problems. The hardest part is staying awake.
The tests are really hard, but if you go to lab and do the assigned work you'll do fine. I only passed one test, but did all the other stuff and I pulled off a "B". he does give "index points" for each test and that helps a lot.
Don't listen to the bad reviews....if you go to class and do your work then you will do great! You'd have to be an idiot not to pass this class. He even bumps up grades at the end of the semester. AND he is a really nice and interesting teacher.
I agree, dont not pay attention to the bad reviews, I have had two semesters with Dr. Guffey and have managed to get a B+ both times. The key is going to lab and doing the minimal homework. No more than 2 hours of studying is needed to pass his exams, they are very difficult, but passable.
Very interesting guy, but as people have said, the tests are very hard and often do not reflect the material he lectures about. It is true that you would have to be dead not to pass this class.
all his finals come from old tests
I really like Guffey, its just that he doesn't really talk about biology in his lectures. He often talks about politics (from a enviromentalist view). Though, I must say he carries wit.
Im in law schoool and I hate science. Guffey's class was a great was to begin college and he was very helpful.
Mr. Guffey's test really are hard; the material on it is often not stressed, so study a lot. Go to class, definitely go to lab, at least try on the tests, and you should be fine. He's a nice guy, even if he is a little long-winded. Biology is extensive no matter the teacher. You might as well take it from someone nice.
I went 2 times other then exam days to his lecture and still passed, he curves, a lot. His tests are very hard and don't expect to turn in anything late- you could have been hit by a car and he still won't let you make-up assignments. Go to labs, they are easy but arm a lot of pts.
It is rough, but study and you should be alright.
Interesting lecture
His tests are hard so study hard. Pray you have a great lab instructor.
My friends who have had him for standard biology say he is easy, but the upper level class is impossible and not fair. My friend who skipped 2 labs and failed all of the tests made a C, but he still have me a C even though I never missed a lab and passed every test. He only curves if you are failing. I had a friend with a B+, still no curve
I took this class last year. Lecture is boring and tests are hard. Make sure you go to lab- it helps. Dr. Guffey is not a good teacher.
A LOT better than Ratnayeke so definitely take him instead if you have a choice but the lectures are so boring. be sure to study. gives a quiz practically every class so be sure to actually attend
He's boring but passable.
Tries to be very intelectual; however, ends up getting a little too intelectual and hard to follow.
He tries hard to engage students, but the problem is that most of them are 18/19 fresh out of hs and think that college is an extension of it. To succeed you need to go to class, read the book, study the notes and have a positive attitude. Sounds like a lot, but the formula is pretty much par for the course in college.
questionability of teachers ability to cope with the reality that it is a distrobution requirement and 1 out of 600 people in the class really cares about biology. he manipulates the students. and he also uses big words to confuse those in his class whos english is limited.
Very unhelpful and untruthful, said he would fix my grades that I earned but then said he didn't have time to give me my real grades thus costing me an A in the class, Also get old exams because 80-90% of the new tests are exactly the same!!
Guff was really boring and I think he was going for boring. Not very difficult if you get the tests from the previous semester. Guff usually will help you out but first he wants to be rude to you; not a very nice guy. Anyways, not a hard class if you actually go and just try a little.
you review the same material you learned in middle school-surprisingly, the tests are kind of hard. he does try really hard to make students interested, but he tends to alienate many through his unconventional and eccentric sense of humor. he really is a nice guy and is willing to help, but BIO 102 was just horrible.
I thought this class was pretty easy. Sometimes during class he makes those comments that make you feel like you're a total****for not knowing the answer. But thats guffey. I failed every single test but pulled out a B both semesters. I believe a majority of the class made A's in 102. Quite easy if you use some common sense...
the exams were horrible. Guffey tends to go off on tangents and forgets that he is teaching. Go to class because he gives extra credit pop quizzes.
Guffey is a great teacher! He is really excited about what he is teaching and willing to help if you put the work in. It's not an easy A, but he makes it a fun challenge.
Well I made a C in this class and I have all A's except Guffey's class. I don't know if it was because this was my first semester and I wasn't expecting it to be this difficult or if he just sucks as a teacher. I thought the tests were so hard. There was too much information to study for. I got 50s on the tests.
he tells you what he expects and expects you to be accountable. Tests were somewhat difficult and there was not very much homework. With effort should pull an A or B
I was always real discouraged by the my test grades because I would REALLY study and make 50s. BUT He does curve the heck out of his class..ALSO when I took 102 I made better test grades because I buddied up with a sorority girl who had past tests that had at least 30 or 35 of the same questions on the test.
First of all...calm down, you're not failing, I know it seems like you are, but you actually have a B. Basically don't expect to know what's going on. Really, just go to class and every lab, study for about and an hour for tests and you're good. Don't take him in the morning though, it's terrible. He's also pretty funny but mostly boring.
Tests are relatively hard but they are mostly based on textbook. Read all assigned pages & expect a pop quiz once a week.
His tests are entirely too hard. He doesn't explain things well. He doesn't care wheter you learn or not. Gives lots of clicker quizzes that are kind of hard unless you are completely prepared. I got a B in the class but if it weren't for lab I would have done horrible because I failed every test and completely bombed the final.
Guffey is fairly interesting..considering I had him @ 8 AM. Go to class because he gives random clicker quizzes. Also, he lets you keep the exams, so if you can get someone else's from a previous semester, EXCELLENT STUDYING TOOL.
Tests are VERY hard! I would study more than any other class and know the masterial but still miss a lot on his tests. Mostly tests you on test taking abilities than your knowledge. Also gives random quizzes about 1-2x/week over material not yet lectured. Thought I had a C but somehow pulled and A, mostly due to his curve. Didn't learn much..
Worst professor I have ever had. He cannot teach to save his life and typically rambles on about seemingly nothing. His lectures are very boring. Gives too many pop quizzes and tests are way too hard. Nice guy, but not the best teacher. Supposedly curves, but I never got one. Would not recommend at all.
Do not take this guy. Change your schedule. I don't know how these ppl with C's got A's. Cuz I had a B and got a C! his tests are way too difficult. he has pop quizes and God forbid you have an emergency and miss one! He can't teach. I had a really hard TA. This class is ridiculous. It's complete luck if you get a curve. Just find a better teacher.
As a few others have said, don't pay attention to the bad ratings. Dr. Guffey is fair and gives questions that you need to have experience at seeing if you actually plan to take MCATs or whatever. I kept a high A all semester--he curves tests, curves the class averages, and lab will save you even if you don't do as well on the tests.
Lectures were boring. Exams are rediculous. More of test taking skills than biology skills. Studied for days, talked to him about how to study, read for before class, did everything I could do. Test still were really hard.
NOT A GOOD TEACHER AT ALL
Learning any biology definitely takes a backseat to test-taking skills when Dr. Guffey is on the throne. Great for those looking for a hard class that gives little back.
Dr. Guffey's class was one of the hardest i've ever taken. He gives clicker quizzes everyday and the class average is always 50% or lower. I studied for his tests for 8 hours and still never managed to get above a 67%. Lab will save your grade and he does curve A LOT. somehow i got a B+ in the class. I have no idea how. ha
Go to lecture, there are clicker quizzes everyday. The tests are impossible, so don't waste your time studying too much. Labs are easy so it really helps your grade. I failed every test, but still got a B in the class. Thank god for the major curve he gives.
Class is pretty hard, you must attend class everyday because there is a 80% chance that you'll have a quiz in there, but don't worry the lab grades help enormously and he give a huge curve at the end of the semester, fun teacher, though some of the lectures do get boring, failed every test but still got an A in the class, I enjoyed Guffey's class!
I enjoyed his lecture, and he followed the book pretty well. His tests, on the other hand, were HORRIBLE! You will basically be tested on how well you take tests rather than the subject matter. On the plus side, no matter what you get, he curves his class up so he can turn a bell curve for his grades. Our class average was a D going into the final!
he's alright... a fair grader and most of the time is understandable
This class is super hard. It is almost impossible to take notes, he is very nice guy and he tries to be funny but he is super boring. I pretty much hate this class. I wouldn't advise anyone to take him, please do yourself a favor and take someone else!
Horrible teacher. His test are impossible. Lectures are boring and pointless except for the quizes which are given about 75%of the time. I would not reccomend taking this teacher.
Guffey is a nice guy. Gets much too into species rather than general topics. Lab is an easy way to better your grade. Tests are ridiculously hard but they aren't worth very much. Take all the freebie points you can get, there are a lot of them. I will end up with either an A, B+, or B. Don't know about the curve yet. Hope this helps!
He is awful! His tests are more about test taking skills than biology! I studied a good 9 or 10 hours a week for this class, and did all the reading and NEVER did good on his exams!
Thisis the strangest class I have ever had. He does not talk about anything yet he keeps you forever. The in class quizes are no helpful and only hurt my grade. I would take a different professor if at all possible.
His lectures are sometimes dry. He is more "animated" than most professors. Exams are very difficult- class av. ranged from low 50's to low 60's. Not sure about curve just yet. Possesses a high demand/ "respect" for our intelligence. Defiantly not the easiest bio- wait a semester and take someone else. Class frustrated me greatly many times
guffey is an absolutely horrible teacher. his lectures are non informative and a lot of the times his lectures don't line up with his notes. his tests are impossible no matter how much you study. his quizzes are given at random times. only reason i ever went to class was to have a chance at guessing in case of a quiz. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
He wasnt too bad just expects a lot from students. I took Bio 102 with him and it was a little difficult for me because I didnt have 101. He assumes you understand more than you do but he's willing to help if you ask. I got an A somehow!
I really like dr. guffey. the class is NOT easy, but if your looking for easy classes, your at the wrong college. I've tried to get to know him and hes a really interesting guy. Ask him questions because he likes to help. however, hes not too great on responding to emails
Dr.Guffey is very knowledgeable on the issue of Biology. In fact he is so knowledgeable that he sometimes overestimates the knowledge his students already possess. However, he is a great teacher. Go to lecture, take notes, and go to lab and you will be fine.Labs really help your grade.Exams are tough to impossible, but he helps those who show effort.
Material is not too hard, but his lectures can confuse. Exams are somewhat difficult, but not impossible.
I dont like his way of teaching. He goes very quickly through notes and you never have enough time to write them down. There is no text book which makes it very very difficult to learn the concepts on your own. His tests are very hard although I hear he curves your grades at the end of the year if you attend class on a regular basis.
Has a profound interest in the subject of biology which makes the class enjoyable.
Guffey is an odd teacher. He claims at the beginning of the semester that he will never curve, but I got an A when I deserved a C. I didnt enjoy the lectures because he curses alot and makes alot of students feel stupid (especially religious students in the evolutionary biology chapter). The tests are very specific.
Hilarious teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable in the field of Biology. He explains information very well in lectures. TESTS ARE EXTREMELY HARD. But, he does curve his tests. He is not a horrible teacher, by any means. He is a teacher who challenges his students. I respect him for that.
Guffey is a really strange professor. He does not use a textbook but several smaller ones. Read all of the material and you should be in good shape. His test are extremely hard! He doesn't curve he indexs. But it's the same thing as a curve. He doesn't do this until the end of the class so don't worry if you have a bad grade going into the final.
He's freakin harder than hell but really funny
He did not use a textbook and didn't reward students, like myself who never missed lecture, for actually coming to class. His tests are IMPOSSIBLE, so study EVERYday. I ended up with a B. This 101 class was harder than my 3 honors classes which doesn't really make sense. So just know what you're getting into when you sign up. I don't recommend him.
Do not stay in this class. I remember reading those same words as i signed up for Guffey and i ignored the warning thinking, "How hard could this really be." It was a mistake. This class is impossible. The lectures are random and often times do not correlate with the tests (which are also impossible). It is worth waiting a year to not have him.
i highly suggest finding SOMEONE ELSE BESIDES STAN GUFFEY, no matter how determind you are. we didn't use AT ALL the 3 books he required, his lectures were scatterbrained & to him, the clicker is a videogame, so note taking is impossible. tests don't correlate to notes, anyhow. :[ lab helps A LOT, despite failing most/all tests i got a C+. :/
I read on this site how he gives good curves.Extra C seemed to be the form of Guffey giving chances 2 redo a test by taking it home & another was a take home period. But, All the exams are tedious & how well u do on quizzes depends on how quick u can find a answer in the notes or if u sit by a smartie. Lecture was boring, could tell we didn't care!
AWFUL! Switch professors if you want to learn anything or pass
Loved this teacher! take this course... easy grade and very helpful
He does not believe in textbooks and he teaches as if you already know what he is talking about.
If you're not one of those persons who doesn't like to get up super early in the morning to listen to a horny old man talk then don't go. He used one of the weirdest books that really didn't apply to the leason. He was funny though and always loved to talk about sex like that was a key thing in all of the lectures.
Dr. Guffey truly is a man who is passionate about his subject. If you take the 101 or 102 classes he realizes that it's because you're usually not into biology much, but he still wants you to be aware of what goes on in the world. Office hours help a lot.
Exams are tough. He gives insightful info during lectures but the bad part is that he teaches as if you have studied the material pretty well beforehand. He tells you this early on in the term though, kinda like a warning.
Great teacher. Tests are hard but he cuves at the end of the semester and lab helps your grade a lot. He tries to make class funny and interesting sometimes, but it's usually pretty boring.
his lectures are painfully boring, but if you can stay awake through them, they can help a lot. some test questions are unfair, but he realizes afterwards and either curves them or lets you retake it and average the scores. Hes very helpful, energetic, and interesting, and if you ever need help, he will help you. He seems to really love biology
Lectures are sometimes boring but he makes it interesting. He is a good instructor and knows what he's talking about. If you show him that you're interested then he will do all that he can to help you out. Really! But you have to be prepared to study for the tests. If you don't like going to lecture then you shouldn't take this class.
This guy is so strange!! He does not teach biology at all, and his tests have nothing to do with the lectures. The only saving grace is that he significantly curves grades, so all you have to do to make an A is make a higher D than the rest of your classmates.
Although his lectures can be boring, he is REALLY helpful. go visit him during his office hours and he will treat you special-seriously. He is really nice, although he appears to be a jerk-he really isn't. And he does curve, which helps out. Out of all the biology professors, I would only take him.
Horrible! His lectures will put you to sleep, they do not go along with the book and you cant figure out where is test questions come from. You must go to every lecture, read the assigned readings(alot) and pray you get a good T.A. Some people say he is helpful but I know a few people he was quit rude when they went for help. Worst teach I ever had
Stan is awesome! Very helpful, and VERY knowledgeable on the subject. He challenges his students, and I respect him for it. He gives the class plenty of opportunities to do well. His tests are not too difficult, know the info on topical overview and you should do fine. Talk to him, get to know him and you will not regret it! He is a hell of a guy!
im gonna shoot straight here, only take him if you are cool with working really hard without any of it paying off. his lectures are off subject and i often felt like he was just griping about his life, just a warning
He knows his stuff and is available to help you every week on one day for a few hours. His tests are really hard. His lectures cover a bunch of stuff not on the test. You have to be able to pick through the bs. He curves the f*** out of grades at the end of the semester due to extremely high failure rates on tests.
If you don't want to take biology and instead want to take whatever-stan-guffey-feels-like-talking-about-which-is-guaranteed-to-not-relate-to-biology-or-anything-interesting-whatsoever class then yeah, taking his class is a good idea.
I hate this class. We have lab groups, and I just so happened to get stuck with a bunch of idiots. It's not fair to drag a grade down like that. His lectures have nothing to do with the test, and the readings are irrelevant (waste of money) If I wasn't already stuck in the class, I would never have stayed in it as long as I have. :(
loved this teacher, took 2 of his classes and got an A in both. class is boring sometimes and tests are hard but he curves A LOT so its hard not to make an A or B in the end. lab is a joke. he is truly an interesting guy
The difficult thing about Guffey are his tests. In a way he doesn't really prepare you at all. The only way to get prepared for them is to go to SI sessions and go to every class and still pray you make an 80. The good thing though is that he curves like a maniac (If you try and have an average intelligence you really cant leave without at least
This class made me want to cry a little. The tests were impossible, and everyone says he curves alot, but i haven't seen that yet
Guffey is hard and if you feel like being in a class, just to make an F, then be my guest, take him. But if you want a degree, avoid STANLEY Z GUFFEY at all cost. The lab instructor Matin SZUL is even worse. He sucks and never likes the people who try to do right. He grades horribly and is unfair. Please choose another professor
Power points and notes have no relation to tests. He is very cocky considering his lack of interest in looking even semi-presentable for class. I would not recommed him.
AWFUL. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL CLASS. Avoid at all costs. I hope he curves like everyone says he does, otherwise I am screwed. Does not talk about anything relevant to tests. No point in even studying since you will be graded on how well you guess on tests.
After reading his RMP profile, I was afraid to be in his Biology 101. I put a lot of effort into this class and learned how to think and to apply. I am happy I had Guffey as a teacher. I talked to him outside of class, and he truly is a nice, intelligent guy. I recommend him. Dr. Guffey will go out of his way to help if you at least try.
His power points are not very thorough but if you attend class, pay attention and study you will do decent. his tests are not straight forward but all the information is interconnect. I highly recommend office hrs. and study a lot
GO TO CLASS. The reading isn't necessary but he takes a clicker quiz almost every day and the little grades add up. The tests are pretty challenging but some good ones are on study blue. If you do your team assignments, go to class (he knows --> clickers) he'll give you the grade YOU request. Make sure to go to class the last day. Lab is simple
Outside of the ivory tower, a "teacher" who cannot teach would likely be fired for lacking the ability to instill fundamental knowledge into a student's mind. The real world doesn't curve. Yet, for those that take his awful class, he has tenure. You shall do fine if your knowledge in Biology is several steps ahead of a 101-102 level course.
Honestly, you won't find a good biology professor at UT. From what I know, if you really want a firm foundation on knowledge, take Cantwell, but her tests are hard. If you don't care and its a gen-ed or pre-req for something not that important, go with Guffey. He's strange, but nice and understanding. No laptops, clicker quizzes, and maybe a nap.
It's not that he's a horrible teacher it's that all the bio professors are completely unrelatable. Test are a dragg and gives quizzes during class that are horrible. By far the class I've hated the most. Try to aviod if him if possible! Then again all bio teachers are this way, just get through it.
great guy and good professor. he is extremely funny and energetic. he really knows what he is talking bout. his test are really hard but he makes some of them take homes so its not that bad. he curves big time at the end. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
It is like playing Russian roulette. You can have an A or have an F. It seems purely random. Lectures are irrelevant and tests are too difficult and have nothing to do with the irrelevant lectures. I highly recommend Cantwell over Guffey for bio. This is the worst class I have had in college so far.
After reading the comments I'm somewhat surprised. Dude is a great teacher and not hard at all. I took him for 101 and 102. I would do it all over again if I had to.
Dr. Guffey is a very intelligent man, and whereas his lectures are mostly irrelevant to his exams, you can utilize them to infer some pretty off the wall questions if you take the time to listen to him. If you still have any questions, don't be afraid to approach him. He will help you and help you effectively. Hope you enjoy =)
A typical 100 level professor that makes his tests a guessing game. The only reason I did well in the class was because I got ahold of old tests from several years. That is the key to the class. Know that material and pray for the best.
Not willing to help you out at all if you have a problem in the class. And a smart aleck. That's about it.
go to class. seek si help. and youll do great
He seems like a nice guy. He always made little jokes that made him come off as a smart alec. HIS TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE! But most of my exams were take home. Even part of the final was take home. Therefore, you can meet up with your lab group and get some help. But even if they're take home, they take forever to complete. Good luck in this class.
You should take this class if you have no other choice (of class or professor). He seems like a cool guy, at least he tries to, but his lectures are so irrelevant. He's definitely a smart alec and his test are indeed impossible. The class average has been in the 60's both times so far.
He does not use the text book at all in the class. In order to do well in his class is show up for every class period and go to SI sessions. over all I enjoyed his class.
Real easy class. Daily clicker quiz for grade so attendance is a must (although not required by him). Cool guy, weights a lot of the assignments. Definitely recommended.
Second time I've taken Guffey. I'm a senior and just now getting around to finishing the Biology sequence. Ignore the bad reviews, Guffey is one of the most helpful professors at UT and is pretty clear on what you need to do to get an A. His tests are not that difficult. He is a great guy and its pretty easy to get an A.
Despite the chocos and hiking shorts in winter, Guffey is a brilliant guy with a dry sense of humor. He emphasizes critical thinking about science rather than facts he knows people astray from the science/biology path will never use. Great teacher. Take.
Guffey's 130 class is INTENSE. It's so much work. I spent so many hours a week on this course and still felt unsure about examinations. The labs are really cool, but his tests are the bane of every students' existence. I would honestly take a different professor if possible... It's a tough class, whether you're interested in the subject or not.
Dr. Guffey's exams, like you've heard, are extremely difficult. Clicker quizzes everyday for attendance (AND FOR A GRADE). That said, Guffey is a great guy. He's funny and interesting, but still gives RIDICULOUS tests. Studying doesn't help much. I'd recommend another teacher. But, if you wind up taking him, it isn't THAT bad.
Everyone said this class would be the hardest and as I took it, it wasn't all that bad. People told me they made D's and C's! Honestly. READ the lessons BEFORE the class, it will help on clicker quizzes!!! and always go to class and don't forget your clicker. I didn't do that well on his exams, forgot my clicker twice and got a B in the class! :)
Guffey is a great teacher, but his monotone voice sometimes makes his lectures SO boring. He is also so intelligent that it's sometimes hard to keep up with his "scientific vernacular". Overall I would highly suggest taking Guffey because he really does work with his students who actually put in an effort to learn the material. -Reading is a MUST!
If you have to take bio 130, take guffey.his tests are extremely difficult.but make an A in lab so it will pad your grade.always attend class for daily clicker quizzes.the only way to keep up in this class is too study daily and read the required readings.he is very fair when it comes to final grades, i made a B.his exams require crictical thinking
He is a fun professor. He really loves his field of study and tries to share it with his classes.
Guffmaster...What can I say. This guy is the master of trickery. He has quizzes every day in class- throughout the class. His exams are hard and full of trick questions, but still reasonable. However, Guffmaster is a good guy and funny. He curves and will give you about a grade point higher than you actually make on the tests. Overall I reccomend.
Guffey's tests are EXTREMELY difficult. However, Guffey is willing to try to help you if you come to him. Studying and reading is CRUCIAL to passing and understanding the class. Test grades are done on a curve (even though he says they aren't). If you need help, contact Guffey; he will help you. He's really passionate about biology and it shows.
Guffey is a great guy who really does want his students to do well. He challenges you, but his intentions are that you learn and grow from the class. It is quite interesting and yes the tests are hard but if you prepare with a lot of practice like he entails, you'll do fine!
Run....no seriously. Run.
Guffey's class is difficult. There is a lot of reading, but doing the readings is the only way to do well in the class because he has a clicker quiz every class, and the tests are based on the reading more than class. If you want an easy class, do not take this one; however, you will learn a lot.
Guffey is a really interesting character. He is funny and his lectures can be interesting, but I found that lecture pretty much had nothing to do with the class. Attendance is mandatory(quiz daily) and reading the assignments is a must. It is an extremely challenging class. However, if you are willing to really work it can be done, just not easily.
Guffey is a very intelligent man and knows what he is talking about. If you ever have a problem or question he is more than willing to help you. Reading the textbook before class helps tremendously, as does attending class. If you read daily and do your work, you'll be fine. If you don't, then look forward to taking the class again.
This class is very difficult. He gives a quiz everyday, and the test are IMPOSSIBLE. However, If you read and do your best it is very possible to get an A or B.
Dr. Guffey is a difficult professor, but not impossible. Read the assigned pages in the textbook, do as well as you can in lab, on every assignment, and on every in-class clicker quiz and you will be alright. Tests are always curved.
Amazing professor. Don't listen to anybody who tells you his class or tests are impossible. Pay attention to a reasonable degree and you won't even need the book for an A or B. Watch the wordings on the tests; he will try to trick you if you're just regurgitating facts, but basic understanding of the material will make this null. Funny man too!
Great professor! He really knows what he's talking about. There are clicker quizzes every day and the tests are somewhat difficult, but I sat in the front and attended every class. At the end of the semester I ended up having a B+, but he pushed it up to an A- because I was hardworking!! So make sure he knows you!
Many people take Stanley Guffey's class thinking that they can just sleep their way through the pre-med curriculum. Dr. Guffey is not easy, you have to work for your A, but it's nothing compared to what you need for an A in OChem. He's reasonable, kind, helpful, funny, and a cool dude to chill with. Your lab instructor's quality might vary though.
Guffey is NOT the easiest professor. You have to read the assigned pages and pay extra attention in class. His tests are not impossible BUT you do have to study them. Do not think this class will be an easy A. He gives clicker questions as attendance points. So go to class, pay attention, and study and you might do fine.
This class is hard, but not "impossible." I resented Guffey bc he likes to challenge students, but I gained a respect for him. Live & breathe the "learning objectives", study hard, don't let the 1st exam terrify you, & you'll receive the grade your effort deserves. I got an A. If you need help, just ask. May the odds ever be in your favor.
I think he's a good person, his teaching style is different from any professor I've ever had. He urges students to get a lot of the fundamental knowledge done before class, and wants to help you with higher understanding. Which I can appreciate. Hoping for somewhat of a curve.. Tests are really hard.
This was a straightforward class turned into the hardest course. Study guides? None. Helpful lectures? Haha, nope. He is enthusiastic, but not enough to teach the class. Expect to spend all of your time trying to pass the tests. If you are forced to take him, buy the textbook, NEVER skip a mastering, and go to every class.
You get what you deserve. Not a blowoff class!! You have to go, but it is interesting. I learned a lot in this course because I tried to, and the grade showed it. Probably the best and most helpful teacher you can have in this course. Guffey is fair.
This is a course you have to work at. You will not be given a grade. The lectures can be long and off topic but you have to go for clicker points. He wants you to do well. Test are hard but not impossible, you have to study and know the broad topics. Work hard and you will get a good grade.
Mr. Guffey is a cool dude and pretty nice. But if you want to actually leaner something about biology go for another teacher. He doesn't actually teach, he expects you to read a TON and retain all of it. His tests are over detailed and nearly impossible. I studied for some of the tests for a solid week and still failed. Stay away from this class.
This class is without a doubt the worst class I have ever taken at this university. Lectures are useless because dr. guffey doesn't teach you ANYTHING. Not exaggerating... he literally teaches nothing. His exam questions are on the level of MCAT and PCAT. Sorry but its basically impossible to pass unless you already have a PhD in biology.
he is pleasant to talk to and engaging in lectures. however, his lectures have NOTHING to do with the tests. he jumps around the textbook. his exams are impossible and you cant study for them. lectures have clicker quizzes that dont pertain to the book, but are opinionated. got an A bc he asked us what grade we thought we deserved
Just do yourself a favor and don"t take this class. the tests are completely irrelevant and impossible to pass. He gave SOME kids in our class the grade that they told him they thought they deserved, however, I told him i thought I deserved a B+ and I got a C-, so he clearly plays favorites. I don't know why hasn't been fired yet.
Guffey is a great guy. He definitely knows what he's talking about. With that being said, the class is pretty hard. If you skip lectures, then you will not pass. Its hard, but if you're a hard worker and care about your grades, then you'll do fine. BEWARE OF THE TESTS
Avoid Stanley Guffey at all costs. His lectures do not have anything to do with his tests. 20 pages of reading every night. Clicker quizzes that are impossible to pass will hurt your grade. After every exam he will get on his soap box for 20 minutes and preach about how learning is hard. Just save yourself a lot of trouble and do not tkae him.
Lectures are awful. He does NOT TEACH. Guffey teaching haha a joke, big time.
His tests are extremely difficult.
Very hard class. Run. Seriously, get out of it.
Guffey taught me more about biology than any bio teacher I've ever had in high school or college combined. His class isn't easy if you go to class and sit on your phone the whole time, but I never read the book, just went to lecture and I got an A. I just attended the lectures and PAID ATTENTION. That's really all it takes to do well in this class.
Guffey is a great professor! He loves what he does and he's very lighthearted. If you need an explanation, he will explain more. His exams however are difficult if you do not study. Other than that show up to class and actually learn and you will be fine. Studied my butt off and made an A..
His tests are NOT impossible, but you have to study a lot of material and you HAVE to read the book. Studying should be done at least 3-4 days prior to the test. clickers and the discussion will mess u up. If you get a bad TA like me, you're screwed. And our class didn't get to CHOOSE our own grade. But, he's a really kind man. Don't slack off tho
First and second exams aren't too bad. The third exam and final was pretty hard though, but it included questions from the previous 3 exams so wasn't too bad. Here's the thing- mastering, clicker questions, and discussion are worth HALF of your grade so it's very possible to do well. Do the learning objectives! I did well in class when I did them.
The tests are very difficult. If you do not read the book and take notes during lecture, you will not pass the class. I went to every class and took pretty good notes, and still came out with C+. If possible I would not recommend taking this class if you are a slow learner.
His lectures are pointless but go to class to get clicker questions. The key to this class is doing ALL the reading and understanding the learning objectives. He does try to help you boost up your grades some throughout the semester. Some people say his class is impossible but with a lot of effort you can do good.
You gotta go to pass this class. He expects a lot from his students, but its nothing unreasonable. You have to put in work. Lectures are terrible, you learn everything from the book. If you actually learn whats on the learning objectives tests aren't too bad. Funny man, and will definitely help if you ask for it. Would definitely take again.
Guffey is a terrible teacher. His lectures are pointless. Literally nothing he talks about is on the tests. His tests are pretty challenging, as well. You will not pass the test unless you read all of the assigned reading. The learning objectives don't help that much. Before tests make sure you know all the terms from those chapters.
DON'T EVEN THINK TWICE ABOUT IT. There's no use to going to class except getting clicker points. You'll need a PHD to get an A in his tests because 1% of the test questions come from the book/lectures. I studied a ton, made a book of notes, and went to every class... and yet his tests they were still impossible. It was a bad stressful experience!!
People always complain about Guffey but I honestly liked him. Just read the textbook and you'll be fine. I didn't have a problem with it. He even helped me out by writing a Letter of Rec for graduate school. Would take again.
Definitely has a great deal of knowledge on this course, however, most of the stuff he lectures about is not on the test. The tests are very challenging. Be sure to attend class for clicker questions, and he would also sometimes ask questions and choose one person in the class, at random, to answer. Be sure to do the homework & go to office hours
No review, no study guides, no old exams to look over. Powerpoints are horrible.
This class isn't boring but Guffey tends to rant about whats on his mind. The tests are very hard so I would recommend studying as you go, do NOT cram. Not impossible to make an A in but not likely.
This class sucks. Stanley Guffey sucks. Everything bio 150 sucks. He just reads off the powerpoint slides and doesn't teach anything. He gives 400 level tests to freshmen in a 100 level class. Not to mention he is not much at all, and by that I mean ZERO help during his office hours.
I loved Prof. Guffey, but his class was almost the death of me. He puts emphasis on the process of learning. He expects you to study to learn the material in order to apply it, which is something new to many first year students including myself. Because of this his exams are very very very difficult. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He is willing to help.
He's probably the worst 150 teacher here. His lectures are pointless because most of the material isn't even on the tests, I only went because there are thousands of clicker questions. I studied forever and his tests are almost impossible. Don't do it to yourself.
Professor Guffey class was extremely hard. He stresses studying to learn and then be able to apply the knowledge learned to a real life situation. Test seem impossible but GO TO OFFICE HOURS and he is willing to help.
Run away. Just run away.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Stan is very smart, & knows his material extremely well, but assumes his students know it just as well. I studied more for his tests than all my exams combined (at least 8 hours for each) and I never passed one of the tests. I promise I am not ignorant. In my other classes i have A's and B's, but I have to retake this class.
If you have time to switch professors for Bio150.... DO IT! Stan makes the course harder than it needs to be. He has the lowest averages in his sections and end grades compared to any other professor who teaches the course. Lectures are POINTLESS because they do not cover content that's on the exams and I only go to do the clicker questions.
His lectures mean NOTHING. Tests are ridiculous. He spends thirty minutes talking about stuff that doesn't matter and expects you to teach yourself. DO not take him.
You can tell he really likes what he does, but I hated him as a professor. He expects you to know the material inside out and backwards but doesn't do a lot of teaching in lectures. You have to show up for clicker questions otherwise you won't pass. In order to know anything you'll have to rely on the book and teaching yourself.
Stan Guffey was a failure as a professor. He provided no feedback all semester as to how to help improve our grades and was little to no help during office hours. Instead of using his lecture time to teach, he instead expects wastes time with clicker questions that are not even remotely close to how hard the exams are; made class way harder.
I really enjoy biology, I really do. I had taken Ap Biology in high school so this class was mostly review and not too hard for me because I already knew most everything on the tests. However! I do believe that this class with this particular professor might pose an issue for a few because he expects you to read and practically teach yourself.
Guffey is clearly intelligent, and expects you to be too. YOU HAVE TO READ TO PASS THIS CLASS!!!! The sooner you just accept all the outside work you're going to have to put into studying for this class, the better off you'll be. One of the most challenging classes I have ever taken.
At the beginning of the semester I was stressed out in this class after I received my first test back. I went to talk to Him and he helped me so much! This is a huge lecture class and he genuinely cares about each and every student, you just have to put forth the effort. He will help/let you succeed if you take the time to talk to him!
To Guffey, grades don't matter. Obviously, learning is important, but many students take classes to learn and aim to receive a good grade. His tests are ridiculous, and he is too absorbed in his ideals to even accept mistakes on his part. The class is a ton of outside work with very little effort put in on his end.
he goes way to fast on notes that I cant even write a full sentence. I have even gone to a tutor to help me with this class and I still struggled. This class was the first time I have ever had to turn in a incomplete exam because I didn't have enough time to comprehend a question to give an answer. exams are multiple choice and short answer
For Guffeys class, you have 4 opportunities, or 4 exams, throughout the semester and one final exam. Attendance is a must. He does clicker questions on the material you were suppose to read the night before. Reading is essential to his class and connection. Connection between the book, the learning objectives he provides, and his slides.
Don't take Guffey. He gives you entire chapters to read and expects you to come back knowing everything. Clicker quizzes happen every class, and will for sure lower your grade. Tests are super hard. There is no homework, its completely dependent on reading. Office hours are a no. He won't explain anything, just says read the book.
His tests are insane
Professor Guffey is a nice guy. However, lectures are a waste of time as he rarely discusses what is covered on the exams. The clicker questions have little to no relevance to the reading or the exams. His exams are worded in a way that is very difficult to understand. During office hours, he tells you to look at learning objectives, unhelpful.
Lectures are necessary on account of quizzes but otherwise the only useful material comes out of the book. That being said, pay close attention because test questions are too conceptual. Also, some reading sections require that you know things which aren't included in the book/the assigned section. So best of luck.
Very nice man. Large curve at the end of semester. Go to his office hours often. Make sure he knows who you are. Read the book because the clicker questions go off accuracy.
I've always loved biology until now. He requires you to teach yourself outside of class, and instead of using class time to reinforce ideas and teach tricky material, he wastes lecture time making us take clicker quizzes every class. He says the class is focused on "big ideas" but the test questions are EXTREMELY specific. Do not recommend at all.
Stan Guffey is a nice guy but a TERRIBLE professor. His lectures are absolutely meaningless and nothing he talks about is on the tests. You won't learn anything the whole semester but you still have to go to class because he gives pointless clicker quizzes. He gives 400 level tests to a 100 level class. This is a weed out class so don't take it!
Great guy. go to lectures because there are clicker quizzes every day. tests are hard, but theres a huge curve at the end as long as your grades on exams have slightly increased. go to office hours. there are no good bio150 profs, you just have to suck it up but he is the best one in my opinion. read the book and go over old tests.
Stan Guffey is a really great educator, but he does ask a lot of his students. Come to class, engage with the learning objectives, and you absolutely CAN do well in this course. I highly recommend finding a study group. It worked wonders for me. Also, focus on doing well in BioLit. It will really help your grade.
He wants you to UNDERSTAND the material not just learn it. I panicked after my first test as I studied for 12 hours hours for it and the average was very low.. but I went to office hours and he really help. I came out with an A in the class and learned a lot of good ways to study. Beware this class is not EASY but NOT impossbile. Work is involved!!
Guffey is hilarious and sweet. He cares about students, but does not teach well. There are quizzes every single class, but no class on Fridays (it is optional) READ! GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Book is free online. You will get the grade you work for. You can find past exams & most clicker questions on quizlet. Guffey is okay but not a first choice.
He really cares if you equally put in the work. If you take him GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! Also, read the chapters before class. He has clicker questions which are little quizzes each day and he grades them like that.
Very friendly guy, gives off the 1960s chill hippie vibe. The lore about his tests being difficult are obviously true! Study and read the learning objectives. Do not follow in my footsteps and act like a smartass. Textbook is online, so no need to pay for extra stuff. First exam during the summer is take home. His lectures are interesting.
Stanley Guffey is the type of professor that since he has studied biology his whole life, he expects you to have that knowledge too.
Guffey certainly knows what he is talking about, but is not good at teaching it. He requires large amounts of reading before class which he then gives a clicker quiz over. However, the quizzes usually seem to be random facts pulled from the material and are very difficult. The exams are even worse and are not about the material covered in class.
Dr. Guffey expects way too much of his students-period. He will not fail you, but your grade is likely to be very low unless you are naturally inclined toward science. His exams are entirely conceptual and have little to do with lecture content and assigned readings. There is little structure to the lectures. If you can, take someone else.
Dr. Guffey is a good man. On day one, he will tell you that his class is not a "weed-out" and how much he wants you to do well. His lectures are inconsistent- sometimes useful and sometimes they feel like a waste of time. BioLit is key: do well in it. Tests are hard but he lets you make up for bad grades on them.
Do not take this class unless it is your last option! Guffey is terrible at teaching and his class is a waste of time. You will spend every week guessing in frustration what random facts he decided to put on the exam, only to be wrong and fail the exam. This man cannot teach and his tests are impossible.
By far the worst class I have ever taken in my three years of college. Lecture is pointless except he gives clicker questions every single class and that will help your grade. I read each chapter he gives us and it does not help AT ALL on the exams. Just do well in Biolit because that is my only hope. Good luck!
Stanley Guffey is a horrible professor. He is unorganized in the delivery of his material and does not give grades back until the end of the semester. He is rude and disrespectful to students who ask for help, he tells them they aren't "using their brain". There is no way to know what will be on exams, and those are the only grades in the class.
Guffey has good intentions, but isn't good at acting on them. Doesn't really post your grades because he doesn't think they are important - but they DO count. He expects you to read book and do most of the learning on your own. 4 big exams, lots of easy homework and clicker points. Not a hard class, just have to do most of the work yourself.
Get ready for out of class reading for clicker questions. They will help your final grade, won't hurt you. Show up to class for those easy points. Lectures are pointless due to confusing graphs with little to no knowledge for exams. Do well in Biolit because that will help your grade. No overall grade is posted so you never know how you are doing.
Guffey is a neat guy, but he is not a great teacher. If you take his class, get ready to read at least 70 pages a week for his class. His tests are all concept based, and are designed to trick you. Clicker points every day, definitely participate they really add up. Do well in BIO Lit, a good grade here helps a lot towards overall grade.
Professor Guffey is a great guy but is not the best teacher. His lectures can be very confusing and contain random information. Go to class every day and make sure you pay attention to the answers of his clicker questions because they often turn up on tests. If you put in the work by reading the chapters and going to class you should be fine.
Quite possibly the worst professor at UT. I thought Brewton was bad but I would take him over Guffey any day. He's super rude in emails and treats everyone like idiots. If biology or lectures aren't your forté, you're better off taking anybody but him.
He was a bit unprofessional when he went on a tangent about people not doing the homework (which was really awkward because it's a big class). He tried to make the material relatable to no avail. You have to show up for class for credit for clicker questions. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend him as a professor.
Dr. Guffey was one of the hardest professors I have taken at UT thus far. His class is mandatory due to the clicker questions, but his lectures are nonsensical. You never know what's going to be on the tests and have to spend hours reading the book to know what's going on. Accessible during office hours, but wouldn't recommend his class.
Even if you're a biology major you just might fail, why? Because you can be right and still not what he's looking for.
It is very hard to know what Dr. Guffey is wanting for an answer. He's not very specific and asks a lot of confusing questions. Clickers make this class mandatory and sometimes the correct answers aren't provided. Studying for his tests are extremely difficult and probably won't prepare you for the test.
Dr. Guffey has good intentions but instructions are not clear. There are clicker questions in every class this makes the class mandatory. However, his clicker questions are not over the instruction taught but rather about individual readings. This class is more difficult than it should be. His tests are very lengthy and wordy.
I dont. I dislike him. A lot
He class is super confusing. His lectures are basically pointless. His lectures include almost only clicker questions which you will do fine on if you do the reading before class. His tests are application based and the first one is take home. He's on Academic Probation, so as long as you put in effort you will pass.
There arent many grades in this class except for the 5 big tests. Some of them are take home exams and you can redo a few of them which is nice but theyre equally as hard as the in class exams. I made below a C on every exam and still ended the class with a B, so theres some hope for you too.
This is the WORST professor i have had so far at UT. He is rude if you ask questions and does not care about his students at all. If you have another professor option i advise you to take it. HE IS TERRIBLE.
Stan is an awesome dude outside of teaching. He is obviously super passionate about bio, but that doesn't mean he's a good teacher. He was inaccessible because there was always a line out his office. The tests had nothing to do with what was taught in class. He doesn't show you grades at all, he wants you to learn. Only plus side, he curves A LOT.
Really not that bad. Curves a lot of the tests and gives opportunity to make test corrections. Tests are application based and cummulative. If you pay attention and study, you will be fine. Side note- you can find awesome review guides on Quizlet.
Guffey's lectures are some of the worst I've sat through. He will spend 15 mins on info we don't need for the course, but then 2 mins on the info we actually need. Attendance is mandatory due to clicker quizzes, if you are sick there is no way to make up the missed points. Also, he doesn't post your overall grade, so you are left to guess.
Took me a while to get a hang of this course
If you dont want to try, dont take the class. But for people who actually read the book and study, its not that bad. He gives lots of oppurtunities to boost bad test scores and he is a nice guy! Just dont expect an easy A.
The tests are very difficult, lectures have nothing to do with them. However, the clicker quizzes he has (which is how he checks that you are there) are why people go. He is not helpful in office hours, I went to him to ask about the test and study habits for his test and he said that he didn't know and it depended on me.
Sooo he is okay I guess... Im not a fan he was really cocky. And he acted like teaching was a chore. He does do test redos for the first two and bring in a cheat sheet for the final. You have to go to class for clickers I mean you can also get people to send them to you. If you read the book and take notes on it you dont need to do to lecture.
The class is all lectures and was hard to follow. It is hard to understand what he wants for exams. Attendance is mandatory, a lot of the test questions are clicker questions (which happen everyday) and content he further explains in class. Tests are not simple but are curved greatly due to his academic probation. He is knowledge but class is hard.
He overall a good professor
Just don't take him. Good guy, but not so good of a professor.
Most material tested on was not covered in textbook or lectures. Be prepared to fail!!
On the first day of class, this man really said he does not believe in gravity, evolution, and DNA just to name a few. Daily clicker quizzes, he'll throw them out at the end if they do your score bad. Other than that your only other grades are your exams. He also does not publish your grades. Don't ask him for help, he won't give you any.
Clicker quiz every day so you wont pass if you dont go to lecture. His exams are kinda ridiculous but he lets you retake them and allowed a note sheet for the final. Honestly just painful to sit through the lectures, super nice man with solid views though. Just go, study, and you will be fine, he really does want everyone to do well.
You have to teach yourself the material. The lectures were not helpful, and he goes through the slides very quickly but posts them after class. Study for and do well on the exams because there are not many other grades. Dr. Guffey told us not to worry about our grades all semester and wasn't helpful when asking questions or presenting concerns.
I spent the majority of the semester confused and unable to understand the lectures. Everything I learned I had to teach myself. He goes into extreme detail on something, but it wasn't important to the class. If you go to his office hours or talk to him after class, you will leave more confused than you were before.
The guy can be funny with a good sense of humor but his lectures are VERY minimal and bland. He literally never has titles at the top of his slides so you dont know what youre looking at nor how to spell anything unless youre listening word for word to what hes saying. He is not an ideal prof for a freshman at all
Overall, this class was not terrible. He gave a lot of test redos and his clicker quizzes count as extra credit. Be sure to pay attention to the learning objectives and do not get behind. Study the objectives before class and ask questions when you have them. He has office hours and it is helpful to attend those but not necessary.
Guffey boasts that students fail his class. Every exam average besides the first take-home were failing, so he had to give test correction opportunities on the others. If you don't do well on the exams, biolit and attendance are your only hopes for passing. Does not put scores online bc he "doesn't believe in grades." Take another professor.
Professor Guffey doesn't really teach. He goes through his lectures really fast. The good news is he posts his lectures but the bad news is your grade is just tests and biolit. The only way I got an A in this class was because of AP biology and a lot of his test questions being on quizlet. He expects you to read before class, which helps some.
He is terrible at responding to emails.
Due to covid, my class was entirely asynchronous and that was very unhelpful. He never meets with anyone and his test questions are meant to trick you. I do think his class is possible if you take really goof lecture notes, but beware of his SPECIFIC qui/test questions. He also expects you to know more than you do, which is annoying.
Professor Guffey does not think of students. By comparing this class to other Bio 150 classes my friends are taking, it shows that his class is way too difficult to be considered Bio 150. Alongside this, the quizzes tend to not make sense, even after downloading and studying the lectures and textbook constantly. Get ready for unclear grading scale.
Stan is very old school, which is usually fine. However, in the middle of a global pandemic I find that he lacks empathy and flexibility with online learning. I feel that he has forgotten that students are struggling too.
He was an ok professor. The learning is mostly on you. The tests were pretty easy.
I took Bio101 with Guffey. It was completely online and asynchronous (Covid-19). Prof Guffey gives you all the resources you need to succeed, you just have to put in the work. He was also understanding if anything came up and always responded to my emails in a timely manner. This is a tough class, but as long as you do your reading, youll be fine!
Dr. Guffey's class can be quite lecture heavy, but every now and then he will throw in some humor to make it worth your while. If you listen, pay attention, take notes, and study, you will be fine. There was a biolit portion of this class too, which I thought was one of the best and most fun parts!
I took this class during Covid-19 and the whole class was filled with long online prerecorded lectures. We also had 2 or 3 quizzes a week. The way he graded our quizzes was nice because he made it one big grade.
Stan is a very caring professor, who does care about the health and well being of his students. His class is difficult, but that is because the material itself is challenging. Do your work, read what he recommends you read, and you will be fine.
Dr. Guffey is a solid choice for a professor. I have been in his BIO101 and 102 courses asynchronous courses (due to COVID-19), and I learned a lot. However, the quiz and test questions tend to not be straightforward, so this class requires lots of studying. Most of the work is on your end to fully grasp the info.
Do not take this course for bio 150, the worse bio professor I've ever had. I went to his office hours and instead of answering my questions he danced around something I already knew how to do and just wasn't specifically how he wanted me to do it.
Dr. Guffey cares about his students. He is a nice man but his communication skills are lacking. This was an asynchronous course and the lectures were dull and sleep-inducing. The tests and quizzes were hard. I had 16 credits of mostly 400 level courses, yet this 100 gen. ed. class took more time & effort than all of my other classes combined.
He said sex in the lecture 10/10.
This man is lives and breathes biology. He understands what he is talking about but when it's taught to the class he expects the class to already understand the terms. Being it's the intro biology class, it makes it extremely difficult. Don't take this over the summer. you will LOSE YOUR MIND. He gets credit for looking like an old bad a santa.
Dr. Guffey has a reputation on campus for sure. The biggest advice I would give is to go by office hours. With him it can be the difference in a letter grade. He is really understanding; however, this is a weed out course and if you do not perform well he will not be as responsive. This is a course a lot of freshmen take that are majoring in STEM.
Very difficult class with not much instruction during lecture.
Guffey is definitely passionate about what he does. However, he fails to remember that the students in his class do not have a degree in Biology. He is not helpful when answering questions, and bases class grades on clicker quizzes over the material we haven't learned in class. I would appreciate his class more if I was able to understand more.
Worst grading system in the world of grading systems. Gets angry at students for not understanding content. Does not properly answer questions, just dances around and makes you feel dumb.
His lectures have so much information its hard to know what's important. The way he talks in his lectures lacks inflection and its hard to listen to. His test wording is either very simple or very complicated and its hard to know what your gonna get. There are in class quizzes for a grade and its mainly over information he hasn't gone over.
he does not actually teach, just presents pictures and expects us to understand. he needs to stay as a researcher, not a teacher.
do not take this class. do not take this class. do not take this class. please believe me. if you love yourself, you will not
had all of his exams on Quizlet, so if you take him you dont need to learn anything, however one of the students in my class finished an exam in 9 minutes so he made the 4th exam and the final in person and on paper.
so much work and confusing lectures do not reccomend
Teaches an Intro level like a 300 class. Attitude heavy.
As a first year he expected us to know wayyyyy more than we did. Lectures are hard to follow, tests are very difficult, he wants 6-12 hours spent on studying per week outside of lecture time. 10/10 do not recommend.
Dr. Guffey is a friendly man to talk to but he does not effectively relate the information to his students. It sometimes felt as if you needed a PHD to take this class. He is very knowledgeable about his subject but he just lacks the ability to teach it. It overall was a stressful class and would never take again.
Professor Guffey is nice but the material is just a lot. I recommend that you answer the learning objectives using the textbook before class. His lectures build upon what the textbook talks about and there are clicker questions pretty much every class. But overall just do the learning objectives and STUDY for his tests.
I do not recommend this class for anyone. All classes are just presentations and clicker questions. Very difficult to even grasp a little information and to even pay attention. He lives for biology and doesnt teach, just expects you to know. This class is mainly for freshman and most havent take biology in four years. I do not recommend.
Stan Guffey is a smart ass professor, who teaches way too fast and isn't very nice.
Worst teacher at this school.
I know he's the only bio teacher you can take your first year, but please listen to me when I say DONT get behind. He's a TERRIBLE teacher- go to his office hours. Also, he will say rude things to the class so just get used to that. He will trick you on the exams so make sure you know it well.
Pretty political and cannot fathom the fact that some people don't like science. He assigns a lot of textbook readings and expects you to do a lot of teaching yourself outside of class. Exams are open-note, but the questions are designed to where that doesn't help much.
He was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. There were way to many textbook readings and theyre the only thing that help. His lectures are pointless. Hes rude and way too political. He gives 0s for quizzes even if youre sick. His tests are open note but theyre extremely difficult and the information is not in the notes.
When I tell you he is the WORST teacher I have ever encountered in all my years of schooling. He make quizlets for exams with the wrong answers on them, will not tell you he did that. Like what kind of teacher does that. Too much reading and doesn't even teach you anything that will be on exam. Hands down the worst teacher at UT. Safe yourself pls!
We never learn actual biology concepts in class. All we ever do in class is look at pictures of animals and plants. We also have approximately 40 pages of pre-class readings before every class.
Stan is the rudest professor I've ever had. He is smart but horrible at teaching. His lectures are pointless unless you CAREFULLY read the assigned material (usually around 30-60 pages) for each lecture. My mental health plummeted this semester primarily because of the workload and difficulty of the material. I have never been so sad in my life.
The huge problem with Stanley Guffey is that you will not know your grade until the final day of the semester. I ended up with a B- when I have all A's in every other class. You will get no feedback in this class and it is completely up to you to learn. His lectures are confusing and he will avoid answering your questions. BE PREPARED TO READ!!
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Very unclear about material and lectures about things that arent important. Definitely dont take this class if you want an easy biology class. Think about other professors if you have to take Bio 150.
Guffey is a good guy who loves what he does. He is super harsh for it being an intro class and expects a lot from his students. DO NOT think you can get by without studying and especially do not rely on quizlets. Clicker quizzes are important and helpful so try not to miss them. He gives an extremely generous curve at the end of the semester.
He seemed nice enough at first but after the first test his class got way harder. People spoke out about it and he didnt go over any material more than once because we shouldve known it already. The best thing he does is calculate your final grade in different ways so you have a greater chance of passing.
he does not go over material you need to know in class. all our tests (including the final) were to be online & open-note. our last 2 tests were changed to in person with no notes due to cheating by a select few (very late notice for this as well). only good thing was his 7 diff grade calculations at the end. told us we wouldnt pass the MCAT
Guffey was a cool guy. he's super into the evolution side of biology. Going to class helps and if you don't know what the heck he's talking about at least you came for the clicker questions, those help a lot. He curves your grade at the end of the semester. He's on academic probation so I don't think he can really fail anyone.
I liked Mr. Guffey as a person. However, as a professor it was miserable. He won't calculate your grade until the end of the semester and gets irritated if you ask about it before then. He brags about grading "seven different ways" to give you the best grade. His lectures were confusing and reading assignments were easily 30+ pages every time.
HATE! Literally have never disliked a professor more. Quit going to class because I just couldn't stand to listen to him. Tests are dumb - look everything up. Big COVID guy and looks like he just crawled out of the ground. Clickers matter - go to class cause they brought down my grade. He thinks he is a great guy and professor but no.
guffey was TERRIBLE. big rambler. he would make a lot of stuff up, lied about the ag industry, ranted about covid every day, etc. I would not recommend this course if you are not able to teach yourself the material. he gives clicker quizzes each class that you have to already know the answers to from the readings.
So he cares about his students and gives you the information, but you have to work for the grade you want. Keep note of the clicker quizzes provided. Thought I was gonna end with a C but I was curved to an A.
Dr. Guffey's class was one of my hardest classes in my first semester. I was expecting a B, but somehow got an A in the class because he grades in 7 different ways. However, be prepared to read several pages before class. Clicker and test questions were not very straightforward, so really study for those, and you will succeed.
Makes learning impossible but curves final grade.
Guffey is a hard professor. I have several learning disabilities and when I went to his office hours, he made me feel stupid. He gives off huge asshole energy and doesn't want to try and help his students understand he just wants to sit back and watch you suffer until you figure it out. Not as caring as most professors.
Guffey is not a good professor. You will not pass his class.
This was one of my worst classes at UT and I'm a senior. Even though I passed all the labs, that was the only thing holding my grade up with all the terrible exams. Lectures were very unclear, which sucks because most of the exams were based exactly off the lecture and he curves the final exam though so that's good...
Avoid at all costs. Literally. Your GPA will suffer and you'll want to drop out. No matter how much you study, you'll never be able to get above an 80 on some of these tests. Our class averages for our exams were failing grades.
You must go to his class because he has clicker quizzes every class and grades them on accuracy. The exams are very difficult and I was only able to keep a good grade from the lab assignments. Is not very respectful when trying to email him or get in contact with him.
Very unapproachable and makes you feel stupid and a burden. Most of class he spends trying to convince us he is a good teacher. Says reading the textbook doesn't matter but then says you would have done better if you read the textbook. He likes to hit you with "read the syllabus". Never knew what I was supposed to learn or what would be on exams.
awful
Where should I even start. While Dr. Guffey is clearly enthralled by biology, his teaching is questionable. Attendance is required for clicker questions. Be prepared for nonsensical ranting and passive-aggressive, snide comments. With a grading scale (which changed 4 times), you are only aware of your grade when "you can do the calculation." AVOID
Guffey makes his biology class into more of a political science class with how much politics he talks about. My exams were online, until he randomly decided to make them in-person after tons of people already had flights scheduled to go home that they had to miss because he changed his mind about exams. Beware of clicker questions!!
While Dr. Guffey certainly cares about his students and is passionate about biology, there is a major disconnect. He adjusted the syllabus to suit our needs, but not without taking passive-aggressive digs at us before and after doing so. His grading system, while confusing, was ultimately beneficial.
Dr. Guffey cares about his students, but emphasizes learning rather than memorization. Definitely not an "easy A", as you must apply yourself to really learn. Very inconsistent with his style of exams (some online/some in person) and he reiterates that the material is relevant. Rambles, tricky open note exams, but I learned the most in his class.
I learned absolutely nothing from this teacher besides he is mean. I would learn more from watching paint dry.
I went into this class thinking that he was going to be a horrible professor (because of the ratings); however, that was not the case. I actually enjoyed his class, and he was a great professor. He really explains all the topics clearly and effectively.
Class is extremely difficult for a 100 level class. Most of the lectures are everywhere and few points pertain to the exam itself. There is a lot of material he tries to cover that feels irrelevant to the exam. He curves very well though.
I took Bio 150 over the summer and the course was easier than I expected, how the tests are harder and require you to read the textbook and notes. The time on the tests was more than enough for some but right on the dot for some. He does curve the final grade because I thought I would have ended the course with a B+ but I ended with an A.
This man insulted students during the pandemic. I have never felt so disliked in my entire life. The course was made ridiculously hard and was based around the textbook. But it wasn't so much the course as it was the man. Leaving the class on the last day I felt personally insulted just for demonstrating my state right. Embodies the worst of UT.
