Professor Klein's lectures are a bit on the philosophical side & can be pretty dry although he tries to joke-the pilot light joke is awful! He says that you don't need to know names & studies specifically but you do- I am normally an A student but got C
Lectures are pretty clear, but very dry, he says you dont need to know specific but you do! read the text!!! and memorize lectures, he doesnt teach much so he tests on alot of details.
Stan Klein is one of the best professors at UCSB! Very clear and funny, without seeming like he's trying too hard. Psych 102 doesn't really showcase his teaching ability as well as other classes. I had him for 102, 117 and 148 and loved the latter 2!
He is a really funny teacher. He talks a little fast so take good notes. He's one of the better professors I have had at UCSB.
Klein is a fun teacher, and although sometimes lecture gets a little dull (especially at 8am!) he is genuine in his interest and his teaching. I share the sentiment that Klein is one of the best Psych professors I've had! Good stuff.
he really does spell out what you need to know in lecture and there is always AS notes which are really good too because he writes them. And for the book, you only need to know the bold terms. He is great and I really enjoyed going to class
really good class. Klein is handsome and funny. Reminds me of george clooney. tends to clear his throat a lot which is kind of gross and phlegmy.
Klein is really funny and tells great stories. Sometimes he moves fast, so getting the AS notes would be helpful.
fun class, interesting, tests are pretty reasonable, recommended
very funny guy; great teacher;knows his stuff; speaks clearly but fast-not too bad though; tests are pretty straight forward-go to lecture and should do fine; lectures usually were entertaining
This teacher is great and very easy to follow and understand. His class is very interesting and it only has 2 scantron tests which mostly test from lectures.
great teacher. tests follow AS notes very closely
Great teacher, tells you exactly what you need to know!
He is amazing and one of the best professors I have had at this school. If you are in the psych dept. and don't take him...that is sad. He is very clear cut about what you need to know and is not out to trick you.
Great Professor. I recommend the AS notes because the tests follow them easily. He is funny and entertaining and challenges you in discussions prompted throughout the quarter. Highly recommend Psy 102 taught by Klein.
Klein is a very interesting professor to listen to and going to class is actually fun. I recommend getting the AS notes because he writes them and they are very good. Take any class Klein offers!
This man manages to maintain my complete attention with almost no usage of multimedia. For that alone, I HIGHLY recommend his class. He is a shining example of how amazing UCSB's psych dept. is. Great class!
Overrated professor, but still pretty good. Lectures were sometimes boring, because it is just him talking for 1.25 hours. I would reccommend getting the AS notes, because he is the notetaker and makes it clear what he finds relevant. He has a odd phlegm problem... kind of distracting...
dr klein has a very engaging kinda brash and down to earth personality. the as notes and definitions from the book is all you need to know for tests.he truly has the classes attention and is very engaging in discussions. he is sarcastically funny and quick witted. he is a truly great teacher.
Cool teacher, chill class. take it.
HE's very interesting, but not really good at explaining his own experiments.
Definitely take this class if you want a good upper division Psych class and need to boost your GPA! The teacher is pretty cool and the course is definitely interesting!
He's funny....but tend to tell the same jokes once in awhile. Definitely take him for social psychology.
So I got a C+. But you know what? This professor totally kicked ass. I looked forward to going to his lectures. The readings were very easy and there weren't really too many of them. Only wish he put up his notes on powerpoint or something but he still manages to get your attention. Good professor in a primarily research institution. Take him!!!
klein is very basic. grade is midterm and final, thats it. boring to listen to lectures, but definately manageable material. if you're looking for a class that doesnt require a lot of time, this is it!

SOOO interesting. Has a lot of knowledge.
I HEART KLEIN!! He is my favorite psych prof. here at UCSB. He is crystal clear with the material he is trying to teach, and if he ever feels that the material might be confusing, he does not hesitate to go over it again. And he is super hilarious.. don't think there was ever one dry lecture. Must take him!
My favorite psychology class to date.
Psych 102 he uses the same test from like 2000, so get the test files! Psych 117 he has AS notes again easy to get at least B without going to class
Klein is awesome! His classes are always very clear; he does an outline at the beginning of every class and that is the material you're responsible to study for the tests. He cares more that you understand the concepts than following a syllabus. Every lecture is interesting, and he is so interesting and funny. Definitely take this class!
He is a great professor that cares about what he is teaching. I really enjoyed the class and never got bored. Highly recommend taking this class.
Amazing professor! So interesting! Def. take 102 with him! He gives his lectures off the cuff and only holds you responsible for important information. Know the studies and broad concepts and you can easily get a B or A. AS notes are better than any notes you could take in class. Buy them!
Great class! Extremely straightforward, and he told us exactly what we needed to know for the tests. Take it for sure!
Both very interesting and very easy. Buy the AS notes...it's definately worth the 30 bucks! Don't bother taking notes in class because the AS notes are better than anything you can write yourself!
For 117, I Heart Klein!, and for 148, I still heart Klein!!! He is still my favorite psych professor at UCSB. This guy is hilarious and so fun to listen to. Psy 148 is a cool class, but it gets confusing towards the latter half of the class. Take him at the Ventura center, the classes are much smaller and
pretty interesting class and not too difficult. definitely worth taking.
the best psych professor hands down..very student friendly teaching methods...no power points so u never have to catch up...makes all the subject material enjoyable because he is funny and knows all the material very well..take any of his classes
Klein is the coolest! Totally straight forward, totally clear and helpful. If you study, you'll do well. If you go to the review session, you'll do really well. If you show up to class and don't get an A, you must have been sleeping.
man, klein is so cool! simple...to the point, doesn't dwell on anything he doesnt need to. midterm and final were multiple choice. if you go to class and pay attention while he talks, youll be fine. hes funny too...
we need more professors like him.... he teaches with real world thought... he is truly amazing....
Klein is awesome! I actually looked forward to going to this class, and the midterms and final were easy. He has no slides which is really helpful cause you can actually focus on what he is saying. This class is highly recommended
He changed my life! He is AMAZING!
Go to class or buy the AS notes. I went to about 5 classes all quarter, read all the AS notes, and the summeries of the chapters and managed a B. Hes hilarious, so time flies. Take as many classes with Prof. Klein as you can!!
Awesome class, get the AS notes for sure. Not a hard class if you go to class and read the book and AS notes. I managed an A, and I didn't even take notes.
LOVED this class! I know a lot of people are posting that they barely attended class... but go! His lectures are great and he's so funny, you'd be missing out on the quality of his personality if you didn't go!
The best teacher and class I have taken in my life--seriously! The man is a genius. Do yourself a favor and show up to class. I got a B but getting an A is very possible...just dont get too hammered while studying for the final
A.S. Notes-amazing! Writting by him. BEST professor i have ever had!! Amazing, interesting, funny. No need to go to class if you have A.S. notes..but GO!! Such a great interesting class its worth every second sitting in that seat! I absolutely love this guy!!! Can't wait to have him again!
Awesome class. One of the best Psych classes of the upper division 100~109 series. Proffesor's got great humor, he draws well, lectures are always high in clarity. Exams are fair. Just go to lecture and take supplementary notes upon subscribing to A.S. Notes. Professor himself writes these and it's EXTREMELY HELPFUL!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
Definitely keep up with the book and reading, but you will learn a lot from lecture. The class is cool because it deals with topics you don't really hear much about. Dr. Klein is really the man. I should have studied more but I still got a B+.
Interesting material and stories. Stan has a lot of experience in the field. Buy the AS notes and read the book. Class isn't as easy as it sounds, but it is definetly do-able.
This class is related to 102, 138 and 117. I like it A LOT. About 1/3 questions from reader, and 2/3 from lecture. DO THE READINGS! Stan is the man! You'll think this class is really cool. 1 midterm, 1 final. It's all good. Nothing tricky, just study the info. If you are an intelligent psych major who "gets it" most of the time, you'll do great! :)
AWESOME. probably one of the best, if not the best, prof. in psych department. he's hilarious, interesting, brilliant but humble. take any of his courses and consider yourself lucky you ever had the oppportunity
Super nice teacher, very funny and he knows what hes talking about. He is very helpful in trying to make you understand the material. You should go to lecture b/c all of the test ques. will be from the notes. You dont have to read the book only has 15 ques. The tests are hard if you dont study, go to test reviews.
Go to class and try to stay awake. I don't know if it was because of his back problems, but this class was miserable. Ruined psych for me... since this class I've lost most of my interest in Psychology and its poor attempt at trying to examine the self.
Really interesting guy, outlines the class before starting lecture every day, writes the AS notes so BUY THEM BUY THEM BUY THEM. You don't really ever have to go to lecture but you should if there's nothing else to do. The book isn't really that important-- there will be about 5-10 out of 60 q's from the book, but you can guess. Recommended overall
Really good professor. Whatever he goes over in class is what is going to be on the test, so make sure you go to class. He has no power points so pay attention. Go to class and you will do good.
Haha - This prof was great.only opened the book for glossary page.went to class a lot (not mandatory)but only took notes 1/2 the time.purchased AS NOTES...VERY HELPFUL!!most test questions were from lecture, some book which the T.A. made (our T.A. sucked); however if you study you'll do fine.my only complaint was T.A.
He was a good professor and the class was interesting, but the test's killed me. I studied a lot for the midterm and the final and felt like I knew the stuff really well and still ended up with a C+
Great professor. Made Psychology very interesting! He was funny, clear, and no homework except for studying, and reading the textbook, which wasn't necessary. I never read and did well on both the midterm and final. A-
Klein is what all too few UCSB professors are not: A good lecturer. Class is interesting, but sit toward the front he is low tech, no PP or website. His humor is cool. The difficulty of the course is typical for a ucsb psych class- study and you will receive an A
I took Klein for social psych and really enjoyed his class. He tries to be funny, and the lectures are fairly enjoyable. I liked him so much i took him again for psy 148(psy of self) and if you take 102 with him ull see that 148 is almost identical. He uses most of the same ex. Then i took 117 & a lot of same ex, easy to do well in these classes!!!
Professor Klein is funny and he keeps lecture interesting. The exam is mostly from the notes, but make sure you read the book and study the info. in there as well because there will be a few questions on both midterm and final pertaining to the book and if I would have studied the book a little more I would have aced the class. Overall, great clas
his lectures were different, no powerpoint slides. he tried to teach his class as a "narrative", but it's hard to see that unless you BUY THE AS LECTURE NOTES. they will help SO MUCH. just study the notes, and you'll do well.
Klein is such a funny guy, very honest, and really enjoyable to have as a teacher. As for the class itself, I'd say you'll do well if you go to class and BUY THE AS NOTES. Klein lectures well but amidst all of the studies he presents sometimes you get confused; the AS notes really help clear that up. I recommend this class, I think you'll have fun.
Great professor. He's a self professed sufferer of Asperger's - funny guy when I don't really think he intends to. Lectures are very clear and he is obviously passionate about what he teaches. Refreshing class to take.
Professor Klein is very funny and his classes are entertaining and interesting. The lectures are a bit hard to follow as he doesn't have a power point, and doesn't put much on the board except for the class outline. Must be self driven to succeed in this class.
He is everything a real professor should be!
Klien's a badass. I love his nasty lil cough (i know you hate when we talk about this). He's extremely knowledgable and deserves more credit! take his class, but do ALL THE READINGS. random questions on the test from reading that you'd never suspect.
Very interesting content, Klein is for sure one of the best lecturers at UCSB. He will definitley stick with you if you take one of his classes, he is very captivating and the way he responds to smart ass questions is a thing of beauty.
Klein is such a badass, one of my favorite professors so far. Really interesting course, a lot of overlap from introductory psych and comm courses. He is just awesome. Great course, just midterm and final. Get the AS lecture notes for sure.
His lectures are funny and interesting, but the tests were more difficult than I anticipated. I knew all the material and still got a B in the class... the only B I've ever received in college. I guess it depends on your learning and test taking style, but if you blow a test, you blow the class.
One of the best professors I have ever had. I actually enjoyed going to every lecture
Klein is a funny guy. Lecture attendance is mandatory since he doesnt follow the book, but still expects you to read the chapters assigned. Klein made Human Memory enjoyable although I had no interest in it. Tests were multiple choice and straight forward. Sometimes he made fun of students, I'd still recommend him.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Buy the AS notes and you don't even need to go to lecture, but I still recommend going. He's funny and entertaining, knows what he's talking about and makes lecture enjoyable
Great class, awesome professor. Prof Klein is very eccentric, but also hilarious. He's very clear about what he expects, and does a great job lecturing. Multiple-choice midterm and final, both very easy. I recommend this class/professor to anyone
Very clear lecture! One midterm (40%) and one final (60%). Almost all questions are on lecture material. Some questions on book--but only on bold terms. Know the different experiments, the theory they support, and who conducted them. Overall great class!!
He is a great professor. A very educated man who knows what he is talking about. You have to make sure you study though. Focus on the bold words in the book and go over your notes. I would recommend going to the class you end up learning a lot.
Great class, he is really funny and entertaining. If you go to class and read the vocab words from the book you should be able to get an A. The AS notes also helped a lot.
Stan was the man. Really funny and interesting lectures. Highly recommend taking this class. The midterm (40% of grade) and final (60%) were both highly based off the lectures and pretty simple. Know the bold terms from book like others have said and thats it. Fun and easy class!
This teacher was not only horrible, and avoided fully answering questions in class, but his notes never applied to the test. Several of my other classmates thought his tests were overly confusing. He only writes on a chalk board and hates computers he openly stated that he will take weeks to get back to emails. Avoid having this teacher!!
This class is only hard if you don't go to lecture and don't listen. Everything makes sense and is really interesting, and his tests are really fair! He even supplies AS Notes that you can buy. I really liked this class, was one of my favorites!!
Klein is basically a god amongst men. Go to his lectures and pay attention and you'll do fine on the tests. His lectures will keep you entertained most of the time, and he likes to crack the occasional joke. Definitely recommend taking any class with him.
The professor is funny, blunt, and teaches social psychology very well. Go to all his lectures and do the readings. A majority of the questions on the midterm and final are from lectures and a few from the book!
LOVED Klein! I was worried when he said he only used a chalkboard BUT he is a wonderful/interesting lecturer and is engaging anyway. Very insightful, funny, and self-deprecating. Material is interesting and fairly easy to grasp if you go to class and listen! Tests are challenging but fair- listen, read the ASnotes & skim the book!!
I don't know what the person below me is talking about b/c Prof Klein is by far the best teacher I've had. No where near Revlin's level... The class is difficult but an A is totally achievable if you put some effort into the readings. His method of teaching worked well for me, I barely had to review my notes b/c everything he said stuck in my head
I LOVED this professor and this class. Easily my favorite class of the quarter. The material is really interesting and the professor is an expert on it. He is funny, too! His lectures are structured and interesting, so I absorbed all the material from the lecture. I barely had to study for it. Definitely recommend!
Great professor
Really fun and interesting class. The first midterm was really easy and the final was a little more difficult. The reader is a very hard read but most of the material is covered in lectures. If you've taken any of his classes before it's pretty much a review of those with a little more emphasis on the self.
It's sad that this is the last time he is teaching Social Psych because he is a really interesting professor. Lectures are mandatory because he doesn't have lecture slides. He will even give away some answers to the exams just to spite those who skip class. Overall, really funny guy and made the material easy to absorb!
Great lecturer: funny and engaging. Clearly outlines what he expects from students. Easy and fair grader; tests are straightforward. Always go to lecture and read the book, it helps supplement what he says! Plus he actually tests you on it.
He is alright. Rambles on about random things. Does not write everything on the board that you need to know for test. AS notes are not as helpful as you think. good luck
Amazing professor!
Really enjoyed Klein's lectures. When I first heard he doesn't use Powerpoint I was put off, but after one lecture I was totally cool with it. You can actually focus on what he is saying rather than worrying about writing down everything on a slide. Lectures are very interesting. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Awesome dude, created legitimate interest in the course and was really passionate about the subject. Be sure to study lectures though, since most of the class was weighed on them and be aware that his test are pretty tough.
Interesting class and material, tests are challenging.
This class may seem difficult, but that's because he actually requires you to "think" unlike other typical professors. He has Asperger Syndrome and a PhD from Harvard. Leading psychologist in his field. What more could you want from a professor?
Ive been so used to professors using pwrpnt that it was diff. for me to really be able to summarize the important parts of what he was talking about. This is why I relied heavily on the AS notes and the book. btw READ THE BOOK! About 30% of the midterms are based on the books studies. He is overall a good prof. and excellent lecturer.
I also had him for 102 and he is a great professor! It shows how knowledgable he is on this material when he plans his lecture right on the spot. I think by not using powerpoint, he engages the class more because people have to actually listen to what he says. He uses helpful examples for experiments and tells us the main findings in each one.
I was scared when I heard he doesn't use powerpoint but he is extremely clear during lecture and his AS notes are a good supplement (but don't rely on them, they don't include everything). His tests are straightforward with no surprises but READ THE BOOK, it's dry and sometimes confusing so go to his office hours when you need clarification.
His textbook is impossible to understand. His lectures are kind of all over the place and he doesn't use lecture slides so attendance is mandatory. His tests and written like his book so also very hard to understand. He doesn't do anything online so good luck trying to reach him outside of class...He's funny though..
He's a great teacher! I don't know why people are so critical of him. He doesn't use lecture slides so that you actually have to listen to what he's saying, and that means attending class. He's really smart and some things can go over your head the first time, but he explains it again if you ask! Great professor, great class.
This class is what made me so interested in the Psych major. Going to lecture really helps understand all of his genius concepts and give you some test answers but you can also buy the notes at the AS office which help for studying. The midterm was super easy if you understand the main ideas and study! Go to the review sessions.
I really enjoyed this class, the concepts and his style. He is very patient and wants students to understand. Prof Klein actually enjoys teaching and he wants us to have critical thinking during lectures. I like his humor and the fact that he knows his topic so well. The clinical cases are fascinating. I highly recommend this class
Amazing class, probably my favorite at ucsb so far. very easy, i found it quite obvious what we had to know. learn the as notes and you pretty much get an a in the class. he can seem a little unapproachable, but he is a very sweet guy. id recommend this class to everyone.
Kein is a genius. He really is brilliant and you will be able to see that when you go to his class. He bases his tests off of lecture, so I highly encourage you go. He does not use powerpoint, but he really tries to make the material clear. His midterm had no material from the book, but the final did. The midterm is easy, but the final is harder.
I loved this class! Professor Klein uses the blackboard, so I worried initially, but it really helped! This way, the pace was manageable, plus he regularly made sure everyone followed. It's been too long since I last learned so well. With his teaching, the info just stuck so well. Fascinating material + GREAT teacher = sponge-like absorbency = A.
Klein intelligent. You can tell he understands his field very well. He uses the chalkboard, presents information clearly. No Power-points. He will tell you what he expects you to know for tests so make sure you listenattend lectures. He tends to try to explain things as if he aspires to be a philosopher. Logical, humorous and brilliant minded.
Loved the class, loved the professor. Klein is amazing! He's funny, answers questions well, and is completely fair with his tests. Was a little worried when I saw that he has no slides, but I loved his lecturing style! He even gives away a few test questions if few people turn up.
Amazing professor. You'll have to study and work for a good grade, but a mediocre grade is attainable if you just show up to class (he's such a great lecturer that at least some of the material will stick--even if you don't study). Make sure to read the terms and big themes in the textbook. 30% of the questions on the exam will come from the book.
Klein is so brilliant that going to class is fun. He doesn't use a powerpoint bc he talks to his students like ppl. He is very clear what will be on the exam and what will not be on it. Textbook is easy reading, just do it before the 2 exams and you'll be fine. He is a master at the subject matter and uses studies to back up all of his facts.
One of my favorite professors at UCSB. This man is a genius. If you're getting bored of hearing the same info over and over in psych classes I recommend you take this class. He doesn't use powerpoint but you can buy AS lecture notes for his class and it's really not hard to follow his lectures. Seriously, take this class.
Klein is my favorite professor at UCSB. He's a genius, incredibly funny, and his classes aren't too hard. Lectures are easy to follow. Too bad he's teaching psych 1 next quarter because I want to take him for a 3rd class.
Goes on tangents all the time but he gets through the subject material and tests fairly
Amazing professor. I really enjoyed this class!
Hilarious, straight-forward philosopher teaching a psych course. (which to me seems like a fusion of both). Go to lecture if want to pass! He only uses the whiteboard; no power point. The book is short and sweet, more dense in some parts than others, but a good read. (coming from a former phil. major). Review notes and use book for patients.
Stan is strange especially if you're not used to his teaching style. Skeptical, but in a way that makes you think. Really funny, didn't use textbook till the final. Awesome lectures, learned a lot
Dr Klein is an smart & great professor. Very entertaining lecturer. No use of power point(he doesn't post on the class website either), so you MUST attend lecture. Tests are 70% based on lecture and 30% on textbook chapters material. TESTS: 2 tests (1 midterm and 1 final). Fair tests. Not much curve, though. Pay attention to lectures! HW: none
Teaches without powerpoint but emphasizes what will be on the test and when what he is talking is just nonsense. Really wants the students to question what they are being taught. He was pretty funny and the tests were mostly lecture with a few from sectionend of chapters. Would take another course from him.
Once I bombed the 1st midterm, I learned how to study for his tests. You really have to pay attention in lecture since what he says, and puts emphasis on, will be on the test. At times he goes on a tangent, but would later say "you don't need to know that." He wants students to question everything and truly learn the subject. Also very funny.
I don't like the way he lectures. Very unorganized. There is only a midterm and a final so your grade depends on two things. The textbook was ridiculously expensive and you would have to buy his notes to really understand what was going on. Though if you studied the midterm and final won't be bad I just hate his teaching style
It was a love-hate relationship for me with this course (& him). For the most part, I did enjoy his class & I will be taking him again. However, while his midterm was fairly easy, his final was NOT. It was a total shock. It also really sucked that he only gave us 2 hrs for 81 (DENSE) questions- totally unexpected. There is also lots of reading!
Klein is hands down the most brilliant professor I have ever had. He is an expert and leading researcher in his field, and is very clearly, passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are engaging, and inspired me to seek more information on topics outside of class. A truly gifted mind.
Dr. Klein provides a bridge for all students. It encompasses the empowerment to QUESTION the validity of the current, abused methods used in most psychology studies that sum to inadequate conclusions. He challenges, motivates, and truly TEACHES his students. He exemplifies a true intellectual. His knowledge frees him from restriction of PowerPoint!
Klein is the most inspiring professor I've ever had. I've never had an 8am in my college life (senior) and I'm taking his 8am because he's such a phenomenal professor. I've had his self class, social class, and memory class. He's fair, and has solid expectations. Go to class, take good notes, and get his lecture notes and you'll do just fine :-)
I've taken his social psych class and his human memory class. He's one of the best psych professors at UCSB. He can get pretty philosophical but he's clear about necessary info. He provides hints to test questions in lecture, so it's suggested you go. However, if you don't go, buy his AS notes for the quarter and read the required readings.
I love this guy. You need to go to class because he doesn't use power point. But just record the lectures, nbd. I took too many classes this quarter and got an A on the midterm but got a B on the final, so I got a B+. Would have been an easy A, you just have to show up to every class and go to the TAs review sessions, which I missed the final one.
if you're a visual learner like myself don't take this class. Doesn't provide notes and is very unorganized. Don't like his teaching method
Stanley Klein is a genius, plain and simple. He is a brilliant mind and really motivates students to THINK and QUESTION all that is said and done with the world. Listen and absorb every word he says because there's a purpose behind everything he lectures. You will not regret being in this class.
Honestly, this man is phenomenal. Soooo so so very intelligent, so passionate, so thoughtful. He really urges all his students to not get bogged down on the unnecessary nonsense and to think for themselves. He gives you the facts and why we should question everything. My favorite professor of all time, you wont regret hearing what he has to say.
Stan is an amazing man. Stan questions the very basics of psychology and willing to share with his students the essence of his thinking. Besides lecture, Stan is a great writer as well. His paper is so well organized and keen sighted. Reading his paper is truly an enjoyment.
Stanley is by far one of the best psychology professors I have had. His teaching methods are old fashioned and he does not use technology, with that being said be prepared to take clear and complete notes as he will lecture the entire class. When it comes to exams they are fairly simple as long as you do the readings and attend lectures.
TAKE HIS COURSES!!! He's weird and sarcastic and does not give a hoot about much, but is the most passionate professor I have taken a course from. He wants you to question norms and think for yourself (refreshing). If you get the gist of the concepts you'll get an A, just pay attention and hear him out. Liked him so much I took 3 courses with him!
This was possibly my favorite course I took at UCSB. If you took PSY117 some of this will be a review, but all of his courses kind of mesh together and I loved them all. Don't skip class and you'll do great, but warning the final is the ONLY GRADE. I loved that, but it can scare some people off. You owe it to yourself to take one of his courses!
This course was not exactly what I expected, I'm not sure if I ever gained more of an idea of "what the self is" but he makes it clear that no one really knows what it is anyway. Interesting topic and amazing professor! Only graded on the midterm and the final, but if you pay attention you'll do fine! Stan is the best professor I had at UCSB!
Definitely my favorite psychology professor at UCSB. His way of teaching is really interesting and the information usually sticks in your head easily. His exams are straight to the point. He doesn't care to trick students in any way. The course itself is really interesting. Highly recommend him because he's an amazing professor!
I was an exchange student in UCSB, 2016. I took two of his classes and they were amazing! I love his teaching style, he had never used power point as lecture material, but it was his humor and stagerring explanations that made me focus on his every single lectures. I still miss him and his lecture a lot. He is the best teacher in the world,I swear.
His class isn't what I hoped to be. I didn't learn as much about memory as I wanted to. I appreciate the philosophic nature of his class, but his tests are random and don't reflect the knowledge gained in the class. There are no slides, so you can't study unless you pay attention to lectures fully. The class isn't challenging in the right way.
Klein is one of those profs that effortlessly conveys their brilliance. His expansive knowledge within the field of psych is incredibly unique and his teaching style is unparalleled in conciseness and efficacy. Honestly, I had trouble with some of his journals bc he is just so philosophically intricate. Left class feeling inspired and refreshed :)
He is brilliant but I just wasn't a fan of the course. If you don't like philosophy avoid this class. This class felt more like philosophy than psychology. Its not difficult material but he tends to go on tangents and uses very circular arguments. Not the class for people who need clear and formulaic answers. Asks questions and provides no answers
What a guy. When this guy lectures, I often sit there in awe. He's so informal and pretty funny. He really knows what he's talking about. He reiterates his points so much, that it will really stick. I never had to study outside of class because of this and received an A-. He tells you when to take notes and when he's on a tangent. He loves pepsi.
He's really funny which makes three hour lectures fly by. Tests are easy and the questions are very repetitive, if you can answer one, you can answer four others that are just the same question reworded.
Hands down best professor at UCSB. Took his classes 3 quarters in a row & I would take them all again. Klein is the GOAT
Yes he is funny. Yes he is sarcastic Yes he seems nice. BUT. he goes on so many tangents like going all philosophical where his teaching style is just not something normal. We get it you have awards for your teaching style that doesn't make you the best professor because you go against what everyone teaches. He can get boring and tedious.
FAVORITE LECTURER AT UCSB. TAKE HIS COURSES: THE SELF, MEMORY, AND SPECIAL TOPICS. HE HAS A GIFT AND HAS BEEN AN IRREPLACEABLE PART OF MY UCSB EXPERIENCE. YOU WILL NOT REGRET TAKING IS COURSE.
Stan is the best professor I've had at UCSB. Take. His. Classes. All of them. You will never have another professor like him. As soon as he opens his mouth you can tell he's brilliant. Don't be intimidated; his exams are very fair. I've taken all of his classes and he has had a huge impact on my entire experience at UCSB.
The first time I took one of his classes, I didn't appreciate him and I got angry at some of the things he said about psychology. A year later, after taking many psychology courses, I've realized he's right about the things he says and I can really appreciate having his class this time. Truly inspirational, one of the greatest lecturers at UCSB.
Klein is very intelligent and funny, often goes on interesting tangents. Content is complex and philosophical but explained well, and he encourages questions. Lecture only, no slides/study guides. Graded on 1 multiplechoice final, and only curves the class up. I never used the reader, most is covered in class. Interesting stuff, I highly recommend!
His lectures were very clear but I wasnt a fan of him not having lecture slides to present his lectures. Also I didnt do well in his class despite writing down almost everything he said throughout his lectures. Take this class on your own risk if youre not use to no lecture slides availability. However, as an instructor hes marvelous.
His lectures were clear to an extent, sometimes they were ambiguous. The class would have been much better if he utilized lecture slides, but instead he sits there and talks for 50 minutes straight. Your grade depends on one final exam. I wrote everything he said down and took detailed notes but still did awful on the test. Take at your own risk
Stan is the homie! I did horrible in his PSY 160 because of not doing the readings, but I took his PSY117 and ended up acing that course! Stan is an amazing lecturer and by far one of my favorite professors at UCSB. You really have to put in the time by doing the readings, watch his lectures, and go to his office hours if you really want the grade!
Best guy around! Klein saved me by letting me join his class end of week 2 so I could drop a different class, and hasn't let me down since! He wants the best for you and knows his content well. His lectures are recorded videos of him talking without slides, but if you pause to take good notes you will do well. The class is just a midterm and final
Such an amazing lecturer! He's not your traditional psychology professor but he provides more of a critical thinking lens. Grades are based on only two tests but if you pay attention in lectures and do the reading, you should be great!
He is one of the best professors in my college life. Really inspirational on ideas and thoughts, helpful to answer questions. Clear lectures.
Absolutely the best professor in the psych department. Theres no visual aids, but you can think of his lectures like theyre a fascinating podcast. I took his Identity and the Self course and currently taking Memory. Once you take one of his classes, youll see overlap in content and test questions, so Ive hardly studied or read the book. Easy!
Stanley Klein was one of my favorite professors at UCSB. I took him this past summer online and his lectures were extremely engaging. He is not the typical professor, instead he is into going deeper into the meanings of things and looking for the real truth. He won't through facts at you. If you aren't into thinking, you won't like this class.
Stan is one of the most insightful professors I have ever taken. Not your typical professor that throws facts at you. He really makes you think. So smart, so much respect for him. Class was online due to covid. Low stress class. One final exam as your grade. Lectures feel like a conversation. Taking his PSY148 class in the Spring!
LOVE Stan! Took 117 and 160SK with him lot of material overlap. Does not use powerpoints just has recorded videos of him lecturing. One final exam and that is it. Super easy and very smart and interesting professor!
Psy 160 is the best course I have taken at UCSB! Stan included many topics and gave lots of concepts in mainly 3 areas: Is Psychology a Science, Memory, and Self. All of the materials are super interesting. His courses are never the same as other psy courses, you will really gain new ideas and thoughts within the area of psychology.
You wouldn't believe how amazing the lectures are. I thought he was a crazy man when he said psychology is not a science, but you'll understand once you heard about the points he gave. You would never regret taking his courses. I truly recommend every psy major student to take this course. You'll receive many unique and impressive points!
Best psych lecture I've taken at UCSB
Taken him twice, The best lectures ive had at ucsb, really peepeepoopoos on psychology as a whole. highly recommend, his textbook is $100 though, something to do with the publishing company. you can skip the textbook but you'd probably a B+ in the class tops (unless you're me I guess)
Office hours were fun, and his animal drawings were top-notch. I also agree with the peepeepoopoo comment made by the other guy. 10/10, definitely take.
the type of teacher who reminds you what its like to learn and not just memorize! encourages questions and is super approachable and straightforward. Definitely the best teacher I have had at UCSB!
Stan is an amazing individual and a great sense of humor! I think the class is comprehensive to a certain extent because the lectures contain no powerpoints so nothing to reference besides handwriiten notes and audio recordings. The exam looks easy but it's difficult once you carefully read the questions. It is ambiguous and really not that clear.
Incredible professor. Really has an ability to explain lecture material in a fun, engaging, and interesting way, most likely due to his experience in the field and passion for the topic. If you enjoy listening to an intelligent mind and don't mind taking notes from audio only, this is the perfect class for you. Truly cares for his students.
Second class I have taken with Stan. Absolutely love the teaching style and his ability to truly teach the subject in a digestible way. Seriously an intelligent man and is truly passionate about educating us. If you're okay with no posted lectures and taking notes from audible lectures, highly recommend taking this course and any other he teaches.
Stan is a brilliant professor! I didn't end up with an A in his class but I did learn A LOT. I loved his lectures and the content is fascinating. He provides many studies and examples to explain concepts. You'll def have a new perspective on psychology and science after taking his class. Do study more than you think is enough for the exams.
Klein genuinely cares so much about his students. He prepares us to be intelligent consumers of information. He emphasizes questioning the information that we are given and encourages us to challenge things we don't agree with. I found myself looking forward to attending lectures, and the lack of technology used in the course was very refreshing.
He is an intelligent man who knows every answer to your question. There are no recorded lectures but if you attend his lectures, you will learn the material just fine. The class consists of only one midterm and final. He was very understanding about the situation regarding the strike.
Klein doesn't use any lecture slides, so you have to go to class and listen to what he says and just write it all down. I was nervous about this at first but it wasn't bad AT ALL. The class was 40% midterm and 60% final, both MC exams. Mix of material from lecture and from the textbook. If you just study, exams are really straightforward. LOVE HIM!
One of the most intelligent professors ive ever had, just pay attention and study lectures and you'll be fine. he's really a pioneer in the field and i appreciated him and the class a lot
One of the best professors I have had since coming to UCSB. His lectures are super engaging and thought-provoking, especially for this class. I took Psy 117 with him as well and it was also great. Very accessible outside of class and super funny and friendly in office hours, I highly recommend this course!
Stan is one of the most intelligent, well-spoken professors in his field. I'm really glad I decided to take his course. He's engaging and passionate about what he teaches, and often encourages students to challenge their preconceived notions. Don't be intimidated by the big final, as long as you do your reading and come to class you'll be fine.
Stan has an incredible mind for what he believes is the field of psychology. This course is mind opening to say the least, but if you are open to different opinions on the field, definitely take this course. My 3rd course with Stan and would recommend his class to anyone. Rated a 3 difficulty because only graded on final.
nah, not a theoretical or philosophical guy, so mostly disagrees, he said the readings would only be 5% of the final, but half of the questions are fro the readings. .... would not take it because you learned nothing out of it
More of a philosophical course than a psychological course. Attended every class, took pages of notes. But half of the exam question from his final, which weights 100 percent of the course, depends on some reading that he never mentioned in class. Had a 3.9 gpa and this C+ just made my effort useless. If you are looking for a good grade, avoid.
The grade for this class was based solely on the final exam, which was 62 questions. Klein just talks; No slides and nothing posted on Gauchospace, so you have to go to lecture and take really good notes. I thoroughly studied all of my notes + lightly read the book 2 days before the final and got a B+. Exams are clear and straightforward
grade is 100% based final exam. all quarter told us that the exam would be "nothing to worry about" which was a complete lie. if you're into philosophy this class is definitely for you! he rambles a lot, no slides, hard to access bc anti-tech. textbook is so dense, would not rec
he was explicitly clear about the material that the final exam would contain - anyone who thinks otherwise was simply not paying attention. lectures are dense and fast-paced and there are no slides posted. if you like classes at the intersection of philosophy and psychology, this is for you.
Sent out email to all students that he was angry about his ratings on this sight.
I have taken Stan for both 117 and 160SK and will be taking his 148 courses. I have found Stan to provide extremely insightful and interesting perspectives on the way we view psychology, unlike any course at UCSB. If you go to class, pay attention, and take notes, you will be completely fine in this class. Stan is my favorite professor at UCSB!
Stan was one of the most profound professors I have ever had! I appreciated his push for cynicism and overall ideology. Although the final exam is your entire grade, as long as you show up to class, pay attention, and do the supplemental readings, you will be fine. Stan is truly brilliant -- his class will make you question a lot (in a great way)!
No. Just no.
hes a great professor, does his best to make sure students succeed in his class, straight forward with what's on his tests, I've taken 3 classes w him and didnt buy the book this quarter bc he goes over just about everything from the exam in class (if you pay attention). anyone who has something negative to say probs didnt pay attention in class
Stan Klein is one of the most brilliant professors I've had. If you're just in his class to go through the motions and get an A, it's not for you. Lecture encouraged me to think critically and question assumptions that I never knew I had about psychology which I think is what learning is all about. An A is easy if you put in basic effort and try.
Another professor past his prime at UCSB who benefits off promoting his own research through the class. Spits off random intellectual bs most of the lectures, which are pretty pointless to go to. If you study the quilts posted online for the course you'll be fine
Klein is a very nice guy and this class was super interesting. I plan on taking another class of his in the fall. My biggest complaint would be that there is only one midterm and one final that determine your grade. Additionally, you are required to pay over $100 for the textbook and the textbook is very dense and a bit confusing.
I've had Stan as a professor 3 times for 3 different quarters (memory, self and identity, and special topics) and I can honestly say he was one of my most memorable professors at UCSB. Just go to lecture, follow the outline he makes at the beginning of class, read the material (even though he discusses it in class too), & you'll be fine.
Stan gets some hate because he doesn't lecture like other professors, but I learned more in this class than I've learned in any other psych classes. He is very intelligent and knows the material super well. He doesn't use slides so you have to show up to class. He makes you critically think, but his tests are easy if you pay attention in class.
His exams are the type where multiple of the answer choices may be the correct choice. Many of the Qs are from his textbook, basically what he lectures, and they're very specific. More of a philosophical approach merged with studies.
Taking the word lecture to the literal meaning, he sits and he talks. There are no online notes or any notes of any kind, you have to write your own. One three-hour lecture a week that goes over basically the same thing but with different perspectives makes this an easy class if you can understand the underlying messages.
I was definitely intimidated going into this class bc I knew it was only a midterm and a final and he would lecture for 3 hours, but it actually was not bad at all. His lectures are easy to follow along and his tests are pretty easy as long as you know the material. I would say you don't NEED the book bc he goes over most of what you need to know.
One of those professors you never forget. Gave the most interesting and thought-provoking lectures at UCSB, and somehow keeps the whole room fascinated for 2.5+ hours. Fair and engaging system of learning where all necessary content is emphasized but we are free to explore/discuss other topics.
great
I really enjoyed this class and the way it was taught. Lecture was once a week and varied anywhere from 1 hr - 2.5 hrs. Prof makes it clear what is needed to succeed in his class and is very straightforward. He is visibly passionate about the material and about teaching, making class enjoyable. Definitely recommend!
I get why some people wouldn't like his lecture style, but I really enjoyed it. Class once a week, no mike, no slides, just lecturing - sounds intimidating, but I promise it's not. Your grade is only based on two exams, but the class isn't super dense w/ material - if you go to lecture and study, it's fine. Klein is a prof I'll remember for a while
he doesn't post lecture slides and makes you buy a really expensive textbook he wrote. lectures were entertaining and never lasted the entire 3 hours. he lets you know what will be on the exams. exams are easy and straight to the point so as long as you study you should do fine. i never read the readings and got an A- but I would recommend reading
the class is made up of midterm and final. you have to buy an expensive book he wrote. lectures are informative and entertaining, he normally ends class early. he'll lyk what will be on the exams, questions are straight to the point as long as you study you will do good. I didn't read the book and still got an A but recommend doing the readings
Klein offers a fresh perspective on the field of brain science that few other PBS profs do. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the topics he covers and his passion for this knowledge is inspiring. The class itself is graded simply on a midterm and final exam. I can't recommend taking a class from Klein enough - it is an experience like no other.
Professor Klein runs a thought-provoking class. While lectures can be dense, paying attention and doing the readings pays off. unstuck study was a game-changer for class prep.
I would give this man sloppy toppy if he asked, his tests are so so so easy. I love him. I love his class. I want him. Take Klein.
One of the only classes where the lecture hall is consistently full. This course structure is what I expected college to be like, where the very tenured professor talks at a room of note takers. Oh yeah, take good notes or else you're hosed. I can't decide if he is too nihilistic or if he just don't gaf, but I loved learning from him!
He is incredibly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the subject, he is open-minded, approachable, and genuinely supportive. He truly wants his students to learn—not just memorize information, but really understand and think critically. I learned so much in this class, and it's largely because of the environment he created!
Easily one of the highlights of my time at UCSB. While many courses lack a clear central question, Prof. Klein's class is deeply intentional, using experimental design to explore core ideas. If you engage with the material, it's genuinely perspective-shifting. A rare and thoughtful course, taught by an individual truly attuned to critical thought.
Klein is a great professor but to me the content got quite confusing due to how philosophical it could get. Class is only graded on midterm + final so you have to do well on both. While the structure of his lectures sounds daunting they never went the full time and went by pretty quick! Just make sure you go since there aren't any slides/recordings
Just lectures, no slides, no mics. Sit near the front and put your phone away so you don't get distracted. Just showed up to class and typed almost everything he said for my own benefit. He also uses an outline so you know what stuff is important. Made a few friends and exchanged notes to see what I was missing. Test are easy if you pay attention.
