He's a nice guy, but the class is boring. He knows it too, but it's the book, not him.
Extremely long and boring. He talks about the same thing. "shiny shiny, and then you know what they do, they put an ad of a toyota camrey". Oh... there is no way to study for test, all tests are based on test taking skills
so hard
If he likes you that's ok, if he does not...beware...Totally unfair!!!
Extremely boring...can't help falling asleep. He doesn't take attendance and the grade is only based on exams, but the exam questions are neither from lecture notes or the book. So hard!! Don't ever take him. You'll be dying to get out of his class.
This class was the most boring class that I've ever taken! I got a C in his class, not because I didn't study, because there was nothing for me to study! The tests were not from his lectures, like he said they would be, and not from the book either. Jeez
the most boring class i've ever taken; pretty basic information; no homework and class is 100% lecture
I agree. He's really boring and really knows nothing about the subject and does nothing to make it interesting.
big time.
Landes isn't professor material. His lectures are horrible. Good lick trying to keep up in that class. If you're planning on taking him make sure you do the reading. it's the only thing that will help you pass this class. Make sure you go to class when he takes role. Very important.
Landes is a cool guy. Class is boring. You don't need to show up cause all you have to do is read the book and come for the tests but he has an attendence policy so you're screwed. He does let you out early. Try taking the Thursday class, you miss Thanksgiving and sometimes Jewish holidays.
Landes is a hardass, but if you enjoy a dry Jewish humor, then you'll like his class.
I thought I had an A the entire time, ended up with a C. Nice guy if you want to talk with him, but what an awfully boring and unclear class. I wish I never had to take this one, I wanted to jump off of a cliff most of the time. So yeah.
Awesome professor...dunno what everyone else is thinking. Didn't have him for film, but for Media Law, he's awesome.
Very boring class. You cannot miss very many questions on tests and still get an A, because there's just 2 quizzes, a midterm, and an unproprortionate final that is 45% of your grade. You have to read, but the questions he asks are sometimes obscure. Good Luck.
He's pretty funny! His lectures seem boring only because the class is so long! The 2 quizzes are only 10 questions, but worth a lot- scary! He's a good guy, gives a lot of info, not a very good teacher tho
CLASS WAS OK.. BUT HIS GRADING SYSTEM IS AWFUL.. HE SAYS THAT THE TWO QUIZZES ARE WORTH 10% AND THEN THE MIDTERM 35% AND THE FINAL 45% BUT HE STILL CALCULATES IT ALL TOGETHER AND EQUALLY..THE BOOK IS REALLY INTERESTING BUT HE ISNT...
Avoid taking Landes at all costs. He is very knowledgeable, but does not utilize his skills when it comes to lecturing. No matter how much you read and study, his questions on his tests seem to come out of nowhere. I highly recommend not taking him.
A very intelligent, honest, hard working, and informed professor. Professor Landes is obviously interested in the world around him and encourages dialogue and meaningful discourse in his classes. I highly recommend him not only for his curriculum but also because he is a truly caring person.
Landes is an alright guy with corny jokes. Class was 2 and a half hours but felt like 10 everytime. The problem is that it is hard to get around this guy. At all costs do your best to do so. The best advice I can give is that he reads STRAIGHT out of the book. Bring your highlighter to class!
OH MY GOD! don't take this class with this teahcer! He's rude & boring. You're better off not comming to class & just reading the text. He's full of himself & makes his students feel dumb for asking a question. Not enough chances to earn points in his class. He doesn't answer emails, not at ofc. hours & basically isn't available outside of class.
Don't take him. His humor adds to the somewhat boring lectures but NOTHING HE TeACHES IN CLASS is on the test. You seriously are better off not even going and simply studying straight from the book. I honestly reccomend taking another professor. His final is impossible.
honestly, this class is NOT hard. just go, take notes, study them, and you will be FINE (reading really helps). he's a nice guy. the only thing is that his test/quizzes are really weighted so don't rush taking them. i thought he was REALLY EASY. if you put effort into the class you will be rewarded with a good grade.
VERY BORING & HAS A VERY DRY SENSE OF HUMOR!! EVERYTHING HE SAYS IS BASICALLY READ WORD FOR WORD OUT OF THE BOOK! I'VE CHANGED MAJORS BECAUSE OF HIM!
This guy shouldn't be teaching. He just doesn't care. He reads the textbook and brings nothing new or interesting into the class. He puts no time and effort in and is just there for the paycheck. Or that's what we thought. And he mumbles.
Just read the book... That's all he does during class anyways... You could stay home, read and come in for the tests and quizzes only, most likely you'll pass... Just read the bold headings...
If you're going in the CTVA major, there's no way around him because you have to take this class. That being said, the class is bearable. He's a nice guy, but it does get boring. Suck it up, it'll be over soon.
Nice fellow - very enthusiastic and likes to tell stories. I love good story tellers.
Nice fellow - very enthusiastic and likes to tell stories. I love good story tellers.
You are jacked up if you enjoy his lectures. I'm a junior and he's the most boring lecturer I've ever seen. Straight from the book, and you'll cover 8 chapters before an exam. He belittles students that ask questions. Thank CA's stellar educational system for employing such quality individuals. He'd do more good on unemployment.
I know the class "Intro to mass communication" is already a boring topic, so I cut him some slack, but he still essentially reads out of the book. Very dry sense of humor, which I like, but 3 hours of literally repeating the book is pretty tedious. Seems like hes probably a cool person in general, but this particular class is pretty mind-numbing
I don't think he's all that bad. He is really funny except when he repeats his jokes. What kills me is the length of this class. Three hours of the most interesting subject would still probably seem boring. But not a bad professor.
This class is a must for those who wants to continue into CTVA and tell you the truth, the class itself is pretty boring. Landes just reads off the text so except for the first week, you really don't have to show up to class. quizzes and tests are based on the book so reading the textbook is a must other than that...i hope my other CTVA classes will be better...
if u like the same jokes and listening to him talk about the V-chip every class, and a professor reading streight from the book during his lectures then this is the class for you, i reccomend just dont take this class ever, unless u need to, and be prepared for him to be conveiently sick on the review days before a test
Boring! Just reads from the book, just do the readings and show up for tests.
BORING as ****. this guy needs new material
The professor conveniently gets the "flu" on the review day for the quiz, and does not postpone the quiz even though we didn't cover some of the material that would be on it. He doesn't offer a study guide, and his questions come from no where. His lectures repeat themselves; and I don't really know if its an age thing or lack of preparation.
Awesome teacher. Never had homework, one or two quizzes, and the midterm was too easy.
Great lectures, take good notes
Don't do it, this guy is a joke. Long long gaps between test- which he poorly prepares you for. Extremely boring lecture that's straight from the book. He even gave us a 10% quiz as a freebee the same day we had to evaluate him, he threw it out on us the very next week. They need to give this guy the boot. Worse teacher I've ever had.
i found it interesting and easy seeing that CTVA is my major and the test arnt hard if you keep up to date by watching tv and using the internet. uses same jokes all the time but he does let you out early all the time. he lectures from the book. so if u want just read it dont go to lecture or dont buy it and show up to lecture. knows what he speaks
WARNING!! Horrible Teacher. Does not offer a study guide for exams. On his final, he said it was cumulative, and it turned out to be everything since the last midterm. Does not review with the class before exams, including the final. Take at your own risk.
His lectures consist of regurgitating the information in the chapters exactly as written. His quizzes and tests are exteremly specific and make up your entire grade. The final was worth 45% of the final grade and was only 45 multiple-choice questions. If you can avoid taking him--do it.
I got a C. His tests are m/c but still very hard. Doesn't give a study guide or any prep for the tests. Doesn't take attendance. Just lectures about the same stuff that is in the book. Definitely NOT recommended!
He memorized the textbook & that's his lectures. No HMWK. Doesn't take attendance. Only grades 2 quizzes, midterm, and final. No opportunity to make up poor grades. Beginning with Spring 2006 semester he is forced to assign an essay. He thinks I didn't try hard enough. But I REALLY DID! AVOID THIS GUY! His tests & lectures don't match a lot.

Looking for a Mickey Mouse class? You've found it right here. This used to be one of the toughest classes in journalism. You hardly have to do any work and the midterm is a real skate. You barely have to work for your A!
This guy was so cool! His tests were not hard if you study and skim the book. He also grades easily. His lectures are interesting too. Definitely a good professor.
He is not a bad professor. Classes are straight forward and if you miss one, just read the book. Yes his lectures are straight out of the book. He is "unique." Class could definately use more opportunities to improve grades, there are not many assignments at all. All in all, I am neutral. I have learned a few things here and there. Its your choice.
ok so im pretty sure everyone has to take him for ctva 100 so you cant really get around it, so im preparing you all...he gives 3 quizzes that only have 10 ?s so if you get a few wrong you are screwed, midterm and final are only 40 ?s and there is one paper, 3 hour boring lectures and no study guides, if you ask him a ? he will beat around the bush

His lectures come straight out of the book, the tests are easy if you just commit the whole book to memory. I just studied the hell out of every chapter and I got an A. It's not hard, it just takes up time.
Basically mostly what everyone commented is true. Take it if your a CTVA major. DOn't take it for a GED course if you're from another major.
Professor Landes is so nice, but I just hate this class. I dread going to it, and when I do go, I just sleep. His first quiz of Fall 2006 actually had 20 questions so I suppose the Midterm will be a little harder. I also am dreading this stupid research paper. I hope his final is okay. He is sadly not exciting but he loves his kids, and that's cool
The most boring class I have ever taken. The professor is obnoxious and rude. The class is fairly easy if you memorize the book. He makes you write a paper that has nothing to do with anything. He waits at least a month to return your scantron tests. Avoid if possible.
I took three different classes with this professor (Media History, Media Management, and Media Law), and all three classes were virtually identical. If you decide to take one class with him, make sure you take the other two and you will skate.
Landes is a cool guy. Hes lax on attendance and his quizes are easy as long as you've done the reading.I recommend him if you have a heavy class load.
J'adore Landes!! He is by far the wittiest, most honest, and laid-back professor I've had at CSUN thus far. If you take out the time to really talk to him, you'll discover that he's is very open and engaging. He warns you that his class is the "broccoli" of the major, but in all honesty it's been my favorite one. :)
Show up for class. Read the book. Take good notes. You'll do well. Landes is funny and cuts to the heart of some dense matter in plain English. If you're expecting a law school caliber class, it's not -- and it shouldn't be, it's an undergrad law class for J majors. Then again, if you slack off, you could easily get an F.
Take good notes, come to class regularly and on time, and you'll do well in this class. He's amusing and integrates current events into his explanations, which are really helpful and fun!
Excellent lectures with great anecdotes. Do the reading, come to class and take notes. Notes will be vital to your success on midterm and final. Light workload for a law class, but OTOH, the tests are your only proving ground.
He's an attorney and uses this experience to for the class. Communication Law might seem a little challenging to some, but he uses examples and humor to make it seem down to earth. He's a funny guy and very easy to deal with. You must come to class and take as many notes as you can and you will do well. A few quizzes, a midterm and open book final!
Hes a funny LIBERAL guy, but we all got the impression that he just didnt care. Always late because is also a lawyer and alot of potential lecure time for notes is wasted. Test questions where designed to trick you which was the worst part. But final was open notes and offered an extra credit paper. I'd rate him average. I did learn a fair amount.
I'm a straight A student, from highschool thru my 2 years at a CC. I got a C- in this class!!! His tests don't match his teaching at all, & that's basically how he grades you. He won't give hints on the Q's, which he should since Q's were completely random & in order to get a decent grade on the final u have to memorize the damn book!
Good guy, tough class but the final is open note so attendance is kind of important. Dull subject but he really tries to keep it relevant-much appreciated!
Really nice guy, knows his stuff but he's constantly late, im talking 20-30 minutes late! Tests are straightforward as long as you take notes, both multiple choice and fill in the blank. Didn't put too much effort into the class, missed a lot of days but still managed a B. Highly recommended
Prof Landes is great. Lectures were not as dull as I thought they would be. If you take his Friday afternoon class, he'll let you out early every time. Tests were hard and tricky, so you must study. Grades not up yet, but I know I did ok.
I surprisingly found this class very interesting and enjoyable. It's not an easy class at all and you must take good notes and read the book. Landes is a great lecturer with a good sense of humor. He is always available to answer questions and help students. He made me believe in the American justice system again.
Super easy but super boring class. He basically just reads the terms of each chapter to you in class. The class is so huge you just sit there bored out of your mind. The tests are super easy, just read the terms from the text book and take a few notes. I did that and practically got a hundred percent on all my exams. Landes seems like a nice guy.
Worst professor I have ever had. You sit there for hours taking notes off what he says and he doesn't quiz you on it. No assignments, only quiz's that are Impossible to pass. You study his notes and you still get 50%. Get out, get out now
If you actually read the textbook, this class honestly isn't as bad as everyone says. He's a very sweet guy but his lectures could be pretty boring. No assignments. It was supposed to be a 2hr45min class but he always let us out early.
It took me a bit to warm up to him, but he is truly a great professor. One of the best I've had at CSUN. He is a really nice person, he's smart and teaches well, and he has a great sense of humor, which makes the class fun. It's always nice to have such a laid-back professor who actually tries to prevent stress and who you can still learn from.
Alright professor, he lectures from his notes which makes it hard to follow the lesson and take notes. read the book to study for tests. dont text in class he will call you out or kick you out. very boring class
READ THE BOOK. Show up for class , take notes, study, and you will pass. It's really not that hard of a class. Long lecture, but he always let us out early. Your grade is made up of 3 quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final. (aka little room for error!) No study guides or reviews. Go in with a positive attitude and you will come out with a positive result.
ATTEND ALL CLASSES, PAY ATTENTION, and READ EVERY PAGE OF THE CHAPTERS and you should be fine for the exams. The lectures feel extremely long since they can get boring, but he's a nice guy and you'll learn a lot if you listen to him.
I regret taking this class.. I should've listened but I had no other choice. I basically failed this class. Now I have to retake it AGAIN ughh. Don't get me wrong he's a cool professor but his class is impossible to pass. It's so hard! If your more of a visual this class is surely not for you. Very long boring lectures. Please avoid.
First off, this is not an interesting course. I cannot imagine anyone really making it interesting. Professor Landes does attempt to break the boring course nature with the occasional corny joke but it doesn't work. Attend class! It's very important that you do. READ the textbook you will be sorry if you don't. He does have an open-note final.
Landes is the man. He is simply hilarious and has a great knowledge of 20th Century pop culture which he sprinkles into his lectures. One of my favorite teachers I have had at CSUN. Don't miss class and take great notes. He's very laid back. Final is open note. Didn't crack the book...one quiz requires reading of the book. Great class.
I literally attended every class and still received a C-. The class is boring, although he does try to make it interesting. The only things you are graded on are tests and 2 quizzes, which are literally 5 questions, based on several chapters, so it's hard to study for! The review for the test was worthless,he doesn't go over any material.good luck!
Very personally knowledgeable however seems he just talks for hours to hear his own voice then when you go and read the book he doesn't quiz you on relevant information. Really rude when replying to emails as well. Seems as though this is a side gig for him, putting most of his time into his legal career. Doesn't care about you. Wouldn't recommend.
DO NOT take this class if you're not a good test taker. Your grade depends on 2 tests and 2 quizzes. He doesn't take attendance but if you miss class you're screwed as all he does is lecture, which ends up on the tests. Final is open note. Usually lets you out early, and can be pretty funny at times.Law isn't the most entertaining class though
Avoid if you can! Great sense of humor and an overall nice guy, but lecture was dull. Grade is based on 2 quizzes, a midterm, and final exam. The tests are difficult to study for because the questions are so obscure. Textbook was a monotonous read and practically useless to the course. Go to class, take notes, and cross your fingers. Good luck.
This was a stressful class. His tests are based off of his lectures so you MUST have immaculate notes! I thought I was going to fail, but I ended up passing with a B! He's very chill and funny, but you must go to every class in order to pass! Final is open note, that's what saved my grade!
No attendance taken, although info from the lecture show up on the quiz. Grade is composed of three quizzes, the midterm, & the final; with no hints or review on what will be on any of these tests, making it difficult to study for. The quizzes made by him are set to trick you. Probably going to pass w/ a C-. DONT TAKE IF YOU'RE NOT A CTVA MAJOR
He's boring but easy. 3 tests and a quiz. First test was ridiculously simple. If you like not having to really do anything for a class then this might be good for you.
The class isn't that hard if you work for it. -Read the book -Listen to lectures and write good notes -Study for quizzes -Let's class out early -Tries to make class fun Cares about students -pulls randomly from text to make questions for the quizzes - 3 quizzes, a midterm & a final
The classes were supposed to be 2 hours and 45 minutes, but typically were 1 hour to an hour and a half. At first it was fantastic, no work, barely any tests, but then I didn't do well. I asked for help but instead he insulted me to my face. I passed with a C - I shouldn't have- I only could have passed if everyone else failed.
Don't listen to the other people, they're nuts. Take Landes for CTVA 100, he's not perfect but he is by far the best of the choices. You have to read the book but as long as you do you will get an A. You have to TRY to fail this class; the tests are easy if you take notes, no surprises. His lectures are long and he's sarcastic, but funny and fair.
This class can be intimidating to most Journalism majors but Professor Landes made this class interesting. Tests can be challenging but the open note final is very helpful in boosting your grade. I would suggest taking good notes, forming a study group, & cracking open the text book. I'm a horrible test taker and I made it out alive. You can do it!
Tests are heavily based on lectures so attendance is mandatory. 2 tests a midterm and cumulative final. Final is open note and grades on a curve, but his tests can be kinda hard. Doesn't give any extra credit. Rarely gave homework (which was to answer a question he gives about a specific chapter).
I had a 3 hour class with him and he always let us out really early. Class is just a simple lecture, a bit boring but easy. There are quizzes but just study your notes and you'll be fine. Midterm and final were both less than 40 questions all multiple choice, pretty easy. No homework. Laid-back class. He's pretty funny too.
It's really hard to grade this professor. On one hand, the lectures are boring and confusing, the quizzes are unnecessarily difficult and deviate from both the book and the lectures, and I didn't feel like I learned much. On the other hand, he's a nice guy, lets us out early, never takes attendance, and somehow I passed? Oh well.
The grade is base on tests only. I'm re-taking the class again with him.
I highly recommend that people avoid taking his class.. He is a nice person and makes you laugh but he is not good at teaching this class. He is not clear on what he wants and his grades are based on three quizzes ,a midterm of 30 multiple choice questions and a final.
This was a good class and he was a decent professor, but he tended to veer off the subject of the lesson sometimes. Plus, his quizzes rely solely on his lectures so if you don't listen or you skip a lot and don't read your textbook, you won't do so well. Not a particularly hard class, though.
Nice guy, not a good teacher. Class is made up of 3 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. He rambles on during lectures about pointless stuff. Taking his quizzes almost seems like I'm on Jeopardy. Very broad material, questions on stuff we didn't cover. Again, he's a nice guy and (to an extent) cares about his students, bad teacher. Try to avoid.
AVOID HIM! Lecture is extremely boring and He is rude when you go to his office hour. If you have already in his class, just read textbook and prepare well for the quiz and then you should be fine. Won't recommend him to anyone.
This Professor talks for the entire period and gives lots of anecdotes to his students, which are not on the test. Ironically, neither is most of the material that is actually IN the book! No visual aid, no study guide, and no Moodle page! End of the semester and I still don't know what my grade is! Doesn't want to be bothered with Q's or helping!
Horrible professor grades are bates on three quizzes(20 multiple choice each) a midterm (30 multiple choice) and a final (40 multiple choice). Avoid him at all cause is not worth the stress you will experience with him. He does not return anything in a timely manner. AVOID HIM!!!!
Went only the first day and on quizzes and tests and haven't bought the book+ never studied A I am really not sure how I got this grade even. If you are good in guessing the right answers you'll be amazed lmoa. The professor was okay but his visual slides wasn't clear to see that's why I wasn't going. 5 quizzes + midterm + final. Take him easy A
Pretty bad professor lmao. Got C-'s on all the quizzes, a D- on the midterm, and an A+ on the final and ended with an A in the class. How that works is beyond me, but bottom line: If you have to take this class, bear with it, and don't take the guy so seriously. It'll all work out :)
I honestly don't know how I got a B in this class but I did. I failed all quizzes including the midterm It is beyond me but oh well.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He just touches base on what he is required to teach, the rest of the time goes on long boring tangents about nothing in particular. I learned nothing. No Moodle/Canvas page, unclear syllabus; I got a D on the midterm and an A on the class which doesn't make any sense. No homework, little to no reading.
Honestly this class confused the hell out of me. Only had 3 quizzes, Midterm, and Final. I didn't show up to one lecture and guessed on all of the test questions. I have no clue how but I got an A- for the entire class and I know I failed 2 quizzes and the Midterm. Easy A, but if you want to actually learn take someone else.
