best ever prof, passionate about the material
Oh he's clear. TOO CLEAR!! he repeats himself so much that I can go outside and have a smoke and he'll still be on the same point. Learn how to take notes in your sleep. It's hard at first, but you'll get the hang of it. P.S. He thinks you are all stupid
Very boring, very pompous, reminds me of a crusty old history prof, oh wait he is. Lectures were deadly boring, material was deadly boring. He thinks he's god or something.
Yes he repeats ALOT, but its not all b/c he thinks were all stupid. HE loves what he teaches and if ur into the mind ...IT IS WORTHING GETTING UP AT 8:30 ON A MONDAY FOR. Tuttorial leader...definetly Avron Kulak.
okay, he's a great lecturer overall. Repeats for effectiveness adn covers all bases. Very smart and this class has opened up my 'dogmatic slumbers' Very interested in his work and makes everyone else interested in it. Love this course and speaker
excellent teacher, easy to takes notes, interesting material, I'd recommend this class
he's very interested in what he teaches. he is very helpful, writes notes on the board, and speaks slowly so everyone can understand/takes notes. one of the best profs that i had!
worst prof i've ever had. terribly boring. long, monotonous lectures at 8:30 in the morning!do not take this course!!
For a 9 credit course it is very easy if you put in the work. I didnt do any of the readings, but I went to every tutorial & most lectures. Just put in the effort on your study sheets & your guaranteed an A.
Amazing prof. As long as you go to lectures and tutr you'll be fine. He hammers the important points in ... and writes everything on the board. Also allows "cheat sheet's" for all the tests!
Great Prof - definitely knows his stuff inside out..well he should..he wrote like 100 books on the material...speaks slowly and repeats often for clarity
GOOD PROF, HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT. BUT VERY BORING LECTURES. THIS IS A CLASS YOU MUST GO TO IN ORDER TO GET A GOOD MARK. AND PAY ATTENTION IN LECTURES!
Who lets you take in a cheat sheet and gives you the questions b4 the test: Tweyman! Although the material is boring if you get the main points, which you will during the lectures you'll be fine. Good prof and the class is easy but take good notes!
Great teacher, makes this class a complete bird course. Highly recommended for your HUMA elective

Very good course. Clarifies a lot in lectures. Make sure you show up to lectures and tutorials or you will FAIL the course. If you pay attention you can easily get an A
This guy is the man! -- i mean, how often do you get a proff who gives you the exam beforehand to write. interesting course- it would help if he didnt write on the bored-- the lecture hall is huge and its so hard to see but meh. hes kinda dry but its a good course
best prof ever. the guy is so incredibly smart. He says everything over 100 billion times so you get exactly what he is saying.
amazing prof.... lectures can be very boring for some... but fun for others. Overall it was a Great class, dont miss out on this.
the best of the best. you will never find a better prof. at york. in my three years, i came across several profs, but none were able to reach his extraordinary caliber.
A very good professor!! After three years at York, I can easily put this guy on my list of top 5. He is VERY clear in his lectures and helpful during office hours. You might also see him after hours as an academic advisor, so he is very insightful in various subjects.
This course is kinda hard, even though you get the answers b4 hand they expect a lot more and I would rather go in blind at least you know that you dont have to do a perfect job on the essay, whole mark based on exam, becareful with tutorial leaders, can be subjective and weigh weird things very heavily on your exam
Clear and Distinct. Good methodology. Tests are quite easy if you come to all the lectures and do the readings several times over. Very interesting and coherent lectures even though they were 8:30 in the morning on a monday.
very clear professor
"Please take out your books and not be a smart guy or gal." A bit too clear, can get way too repetitive.
One of the best professors at York
fantastic prof......very clear... once you attend lecture and listen to his explainations you dont even have to do the complicated readings. He makes complicated material.. easy to understand.. would not pick any other prof to do this course with. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this guy!!!
This had to be the best course I have ever and will ever take... Too bad one can only take so many foundations courses. This guys awesome. He was made to teach this material. He understands it so well that you can't help but learn it well yourself.
If youre good at writing notes, this is the class for you. Just show up to lectures and tutorials and jot down the main pts and youll do well. Since things were explained so well in tutorial, the seal to my books werent even cracked! 4 essay exams - questions given prior to exams - notes notes notes!!
Doesn't seem particularly friendly, always very serious, repetitive. His explanations are usually clear, but he writes illegible notes on the blackboard. Very frustrating. Tutorial confuses things.
The prof worth 10,000 underlines. For starters, hes really repetitive. However, this has its advantages because you get the point of each lecture down pat. He likes to write a bit, and then skip to another subject, and then draw arrows back and forth across the board... but if u just listen to what hes trying to get across, you do fine.
this prof isn't the friendliest, but he knows what he talking about. His notes are illegible and useless, but what he says is golden. I had an amazing TA, but if you arent that lucky, pay attention to what teh prof is trying to say... and read the books. They're short and basic and makes lecture 50 times easier.
He knows what he's talking about and is very helpful, he will make sure that you understand what he's talking about however can get too repetitive. HOWEVER, he has an extremely over inflated ego and is a **** to talk to. His personality is very very ridiculous and immature for such an intelligent man.
I liked him. His tests were very easy, if you just summarized what he said in lectures you should have done well. Doesnt seem very approachable and patronizes students who ask questions, but is a very smart man. I was really impressed with his knowledge on various topics, and how he was able to "dumb it down" for us. Repetitive and to the point.
He's not all the charismatic, but he is very clear in his lecturing and explains everything patiently and thoroughly. If you are a good listener and note-taker you'll do fine in this class. If you are an attentive student in lecture, the tutorials are a total waste of time but at least they are not mandatory.
easyy A+ IFFF you go to every class, take good notes and don't have a tendency to blank out on tests. highly recommended.
Pretty much an awesome professor, he can be an ego-maniacal figure, but once he gets to know you, he'll warm up. Attend each of his classes for an easy A, plus if I had to recommend a T.A., WIlliam Urban is your go-to guy, repetitive but he makes sure that you understand the concepts. Plus no other professor will ever give an exam ahead of time.
Therefore, Therefore, Therefore haha you will hear that word alot but seriously he's the BEST prof ever. He gives you all the exams to study and tells you exactly what to write. Never opened the text books because he does all the work for you. Only thing is you MUST go to class. If you don't no mattter how smart you think you are, you will fail
Took The Enlightenment and Human Understanding with this professor. Very thorough and repetitive. Although, I suggest picking up books his written from the library - you won't have to go to any of your lectures. The answers to the tests are allocated in his essays! Wish I had found this out earlier though. Best of luck!
Smart guy. Gives you all the answers to write down. His handwriting is sometimes hard to read, whatever you don't catch in lecture you can really go to Tutorial over. Overall, nice guy and my TA was awesome too.Ivan is the best TA, he will not only explain everything and dumb it down for you if you need an easy explanation but is also very leaniant
Smart guy. Doesnt use PPT or post any notes. He writes cursive on the board (really small) and has arrows from one board to another. Loves the word "therefore." Lectures aren't mandatory, tutorials are. Take REALLY good notes. TAs do a great job in this course dumbing information down. There are 4 tests (long answer questions)&are given beforehand.
This class is brutal. To get an A on the essays you have to write atleast one booklet very well. It's a philosophy course, that's why. Don't take it.
Incredibly difficult
Exams are essays where you will have to atleast fill one booklet to get minimum 75%. Difficult course. Do not take.
It was a hard course and class average was a C. Course is completely philosophy based and exams all essays. Do not take.
This philosophy-based course was very difficult and most people got C's and D's. Avoid with all your might.
If you dont like putting in hours of work, AVOID. Apparently they made the course tougher then predeceasing years. It all has to do with memorizing long answers for the exam, like 3 pages per question. It is doable, but prepare to put in work. Lecture=not necessary, tutorial=EXTREMELY MANDATORY. Evan is amazing, but still a tough TA. Enroll w/ him!
i found it pretty straight forward, but apparently this year was harder then most years if you go to lectures you'll be able to write your essays beforehand for the test, you have to memorize as much as you can then write it on the test, don't have to do reading -THEREFORE, are you ready? you'll hear that a lot- overall: BORING
Went into this class because of past students who said it was good. Such an easy class and this was just my gen ed. You get a cheat sheet to bring in with you for the tests! So easy I didn't even buy the textbooks or read anything. Extremely recommended just go to tutorial and make good cheat sheets.
Incredibly hard course. Monotone, boring prof. Brutal exams. AVOID.
Overall it was an easy interesting course for me.You get the questions before the exams, all you have to do is prepare well. The only problem I faced is that I felt time was too little to write all I wanted I could have got an A instead of a B+ if I was a bit faster. My TA was William Urban, may not be the most lenient marker but very clear repetitive.
BEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD! i loved the way he interacted with the students and also the way he conveyed the material. He talks slow so i was able to keep up with the lectures because the material is dense and if you dont keep up and go to every lecture you will be lost.
His lectures can be a bit repetitive, but he does it purposely to drill the point across, which is a good thing. He doesn't use PowerPoint or anything and what's worse is that his handwriting is extremely hard to read so if you miss something, you might get lost. 4 written exams, all but 1 allow a cheat sheet. Get Nilufar as a TA, she's amazing.
Incredibly easy class. No need to go to the lectures since all you have to do is memorize what your T.A. tells you. The professor is boring anyways and rude when you try to approach him. But once you go to every tutorial, I guarantee you will receive 100% in the course like I did.
Avoid! There are some good reviews of Tweyman that I don't understand. He repeated so much of the irrelevant stuff and then expected us to know logic symbols without any explanation. Way too hard and did not explain basics to people who don't know philosophy. The only reason I understood anything was my TA.
Great lectures! What I love about Tweyman is he genuinely wants you to understand the material. No moodle or slides. He writes on the chalkboard. I always look forward to his class. All test questions are given a few weeks prior to writing.
Prof Tweyman was the best Prof I've had this year. There are no slides/ moodle page for course BUT lectures were very clear, interesting and are therefore mandatory so are tutorials. He allowed cheat sheets for some tests and always gave the test questions about 2 weeks before the actual test date! Tests were all essays, For an A sit at the front
I dropped this class. 4 in class exams that are very hard. It's all philosophy.
Professor Tweyman does not use slides for his lectures, but instead writes vague notes on the board, which is why it is important to attend all the lectures. However, he does briefly repeat and summarize his previous lessons. Overall, the course is not too difficult as it only contains 4 tests, for which he provides the exact questions beforehand.
Took his course last yr. For 1st yr course its tough. Do 2 things 1. attend ALL sessions. Test questions are on lectures, not texts. Know them inside/out & you rock. 2. get a good TA who sticks to lecture material. I had William Urban & he rarely/never deviated from the lectures. Tough but fair marker. Very professional & intelligent, like Tweyman
Great Professor. I took HUMA 1160 and finished with an A+.All you need to do is attend lectures and take good notes. The questions are given to you a month in advance. If you have a good memory and good notes, you will ace this course. There are only 4 tests.
I had Professor Tweyman's Lectures at 8:30 a.m. on Monday mornings and I attended everyone because they were so good! really goes in depth with philosophers such as rene descartes, david hume & thomas hobbes. My tutorial leader was neil marshall who went through the lectures perfectly and devoted his time to help you get that A+! best course ever!!
This class is all lecture based. He will go over test questions but then expects you to "teach" him something new. Only 4 tests in this course so good luck!
wasn't sure about the class because it consisted of four essay style tests but man so glad I took it. he's really good and knowledgeable about what he's teaching. GO TO THE LECTURES. he gives his test questions beforehand and all the test questions are going to be exactly what hes teaching no surprises what so ever.
If you're not confident in your ability to think philosophically, DON'T TAKE THIS. He goes over logic symbols without giving background. Attend every lecture & tutorial, Tweyman and your TA will describe the answers for test questions; your only job is to explain it in essay form on the test. However, these 4 tests are your only way to get marks.
all you do is go to class and write down what the professor SAYS, his writing on the board is not legible and there is no moodle. 0/10 would rather get hit by a bus than take again
Although I understand where the other reviewers are getting at (monotonous, hard-to-read handwriting, etc.) I do find his classes somewhat enjoyable. It is very easy to do well if you write literally whatever he says on the tests, but you would have to stay awake (8:30 am lectures) throughout his lecture to take the notes. Overall, the courseiseasy
Tweyman offers little to no explanation to his processes or any course material. Hell read it for you but if you ask questions he wont answer them and leaves the class wondering what he means or why the text is relevant... Hes very short tempered and will get impatient if a student doesnt fully comprehend a concept, not a good trait to have...
If you don't show up to lectures you won't pass. Everything in the lecture will be on the test. There is 4 tests. His notes all over the place so you won't understand anything. During COVID is harder, you have to turn on your camera to be able to ask a question. If you don't then you are screwed. Best of luck if you are taking this for Humanities.
Unless you absolutely need this course, don't take it. Miss one class and you're doomed, as lectures are very heavy and he does not provide slides or any external sources for you to gather the course information. He is very repetitive and does not explain concepts efficiently. Handwriting is not legible, has a short temper, brutal tests. Avoid.
Handwriting is horrible. Avoid at all cost. You ask a question and he belittles you
As a mature student I was shocked by his rudeness. He is abrupt and a sexist. He saw photo of my 5 children on my lap top and asked me , in front of everyone, Did they all have the same father?!! Unacceptable in any Era Stan!
You might be scared of him first but trust me HUMA 1160 is a bird course. The trick? ATTEND EVERY LECTURE (even though he does not take participation) AND TAKE GOOD NOTES. Don't exchange notes! He repeats everything so you will never forgot anything. Sticks to his textbooks. Gives you the test questions waaaaaaay ahead of the actual exam.
If you want to get an easy A, I suggest you take his course. His handwriting is messy, so make sure that you listen carefully and attend his lectures and tutorial. Test questions are given beforehand and I think it is graded by the TAs. I think to succeed in the tests you have to challenge the question and give your reasoning.
If you're a first-year student, avoid this course It isn't easy unless you already have some understanding of philosophy, particularly Descartes and Hume The course relies heavily on tests and the professor isn't very responsive to questions unless they're phrased philosophically imo its not a general humanities course its a philosophy course
I read books most of the time, but I haven't received any assignments and have only taken four tests. If you have any questions, please ask the professor or TA as they will provide helpful feedback. They are very helpful!
Very easy class but the tests are brutal. There are four of them and are all hand-written and wants at least a page and a half for each answer. He allows open book and cheat sheets, and his tests are just regurgitating the notes. If you're a first year I recommend this class to get used to the university experience + easy marks. Very test heavy tho
This professor is totally disorganized. He tells us to read something and then he doesn't cover it in class. He shows up late when he wants. His writing is impossible to read and his lectures are incoherent and rambling. He is ill-prepared to discuss what he assigns. Doesn't even have a course syllabus. counting on my TA ... prof has no clue.
Anyone can take this class. The secret is showing up to his lectures. Sometimes you can't understand what his talking about but once u follow through his readings u can get a jinx of it and a good grade! Miss his class you loose information cause he doesn't post anything on eclass (tip)
Great class but don't take the Argentinian TA or his advice
Course is entirely graded on 4 equally weighted non cumulative tests. All of the tests' contents are covered in class, including the questions themselves (cheat sheets are encouraged). If you attend lectures, ask questions and go to tutorials it's very manageable though some of my classmates didn't like his lecturing which is understandable
