Great teacher! His lectures are clear and the homework prepares you for the exams. Very fair! He met with me outside of class to clear up my questions and he responds to emails promptly. He also returns assignments and exams by the next class so you get feedback instantly. Recommend!!!!
Such a friendly and approachable guy who engages the students by making them laugh with his relatable sense of humour. His lectures are easy to follow and he makes a clear concept summary at the end of every class to outline the topics covered. There are midterms for this course every two weeks, and his assignments will prepare you well! (:
Awesome Prof! His lectures are engaging and easy to follow. Tests are fair and there's lots of opportunities for extra help
Mr. Stavrou is very helpful and is always happy to help out. He brings candy to class and his lectures are very interesting. He is a very reasonable person, and if you feel as if tests were graded unfairly he will give you the best for what you did. He also posts all the lecture slides as well as lecture captures.
Great prof! He is funny, and very easy to learn from! His teaching style was great and easy to pick up on. Very clear and you can actually understand him.
Stavros is a mathematical angel! Seriously though, he is as good as profs get. Hen genuinly cares about the success of his students and he used to tutor the class so his teaching style makes it very easy to learn. Wish I could have him for all my classes!
Stavros is amazing. If you want to pass calculus, GET IN HIS CLASS! He cares for his students and does anything to help. He wants everyone to succeed and really shows it. Have nothing but amazing things to say about this professor.
Stavros is a great teacher! He's a math tutor by trade so explains things very clearly, you can learn a lot by attending class. Tests are easy because they are the same as older ones, word for word the same for the first two. They old ones that were used were from two years ago, so get your hands on the 2014 tests if you take 121 in 2016.
He is awesome
He is awesome !!! VERY HELPFULL
Brilliant math teacher. Fair, articulate, really funny.
Stavros was fantastic. I do not like calculus or 8:30 classes but he made both of those aspects tolerable. He wants students to do well. Do the homework.
Stavros is the best. If you don't like math he will make you like math. The guy has a great sense of humour and knows a lot about the subject he teaches. If you show up to class and pay attention to his lectures and use the extra help he provides you will pass with flying colours
A great prof, makes math so much more enjoyable! If you take a class from him, you won't regret it!
This professor is a BO$$! Respectable like Michelle Obama and Oprah. Pay attention to his examples, or he will Miss Moving On. He will drill math concepts like a Sledgehammer into your head. Very effective. Attend his classes, because you can't Work From Home. Will take again - totally Worth It!
I've only had Stavros for an online class so far, but as far as I could tell he really cares about the success of his students. We had a help session once and the way he explained things was VERY clear and informative. Wouldn't call him funny or enthusiastic, but he definitely knows what he is talking about. I would hands down take his class IRL
Best math lecturer I have ever had, Stavros makes math fun. I really enjoyed attending his lectures as he made them super informative, hilarious, and they really make math a fun and interesting subject to learn. Best math lecturer ever.
Stavros is hilarious. He told us when he marks exams he takes a shot every time we get one wrong. He wants everybody to do good and he loves math. Very clear and easy to understand, goes slow and gives time during class to do examples together. 5 stars
Stav is a hero! He's the only reason I passed math 121. He should be giving gandalf's staff because that man is a math wizard!
Amazing Prof. Easy to understand and follow and he is very helpful outside of class. Makes math easy and enjoyable.
Hilarious guy. Always makes the morning lectures worth it.
Wonderful Professor. Would take again.
Amazing lectures. Tells you what you need to know for exams. Posts notes. Answers emails in 0.05 seconds. Super friendly and charismatic. If every prof was like this I'd be excited for the rest of my university experience.
WONDERFUL PROF
Hes a good professor, however, his exams are unfairly difficult. Over half of the class is failing his exams, and its almost as if he's content with that. He's a good guy teaching an awful class.
The previous comment is way wrong lol there are 5 exams and the class average has been 70s on 4 of them. Yes the grades were low on the 5th but Stavros is dropping our lowest two midterms so not sure why this person is complaining. Be grateful if u get him because Stavros is a math wizard. Best prof I ever had hands down.
Great Prof! Very good at explaining tough math concepts and makes them enjoyable with his humor! He wants everyone to do well and is very easily accessible for help. HIGHLY recommend!
Stavros is one of the best professors you'll ever have in university. He makes concepts extremely clear in his lectures and answers emails almost immediately if you have any questions. The exams for this class were very fair and he told us what concepts to focus our studying on beforehand. Take this class with him if you can!
Amazing!!! He's the best prof I have ever had. Everyone loves him!!!! He's personable, down to earth, charming, charismatic and commands the room with his sass. He's a math guy but also has education degrees so he knows how to be an effective teacher. Love him and he's cute to boot!
Didnt see him much since it was an online class, but his videos were well put together and easily explained concepts. I would take him for another class for sure!
He's a nice prof. The material is a bit dry but it isn't his fault and he tries his best to engage. He brought in a guest speaker to talk about careers in nursing which was helpful for many of us who want to go into that. Stavrou does seem to care about his students so I do Recommend him.
Stavros is an awesome prof! This class may be "easy" BUT I learned so much about how to be a better student. You get out of this class what you put into it. Small class size allowed for awesome feedback and care that you usually don't get in uni. Hope I get to take more classes like this in the future.
Best prof ever!! Super hilarious and actually genuinely cares for his students and how much they actually learn for the class. Does not try and trick you with midterms, and is overall the best math prof to learn from.
Taking math online can be scary, but it was a breeze with him. He posted short videos to learn the material (I never even read the textbook), had straightforward weekly assignments, and posted practise midterms and finals that were very helpful and similar to the real exams. I found the content pretty easy and overall he was a great prof!
This class was ridiculously easy as long as you completed assignments on time. There were no lectures. All due dates and grading was accessible from the get go. I majorly slacked off in this class because my mental health wasn't really prepared to do a summer class and I still got 85%
Took this as class online over the summer, best decision I've ever made. Stavrou sets up the assignments for his students to succeed, you have 100 chances to get the correct answer so you can learn from your mistakes. If you put work into learning the material for this class you can definitely obtain a high mark, as the final was straightforward.
Math 110 online was not easy, but if you follow his modules and read the book, you'll be able to do well in web assign assignments. He won't put trick questions in the final so better understand your assignments (practice!) since he patterns the final after the 5 assignments.
Taking an online Ed class with him and so far its been awful. There's absolutely no material, just releases a set of links every week. Little to no check in on topics and we are being graded entirely on two 1000 word essays that require 20 quotes each. The only positive is course book which is an interesting read. AVOID FOR EDUCATION CLASSES
Seemed completely unprepared to be teaching an Education Foundations class. Never once posted a recorded lecture of himself. Grade was based on a 2 part paper with each part being worth 50%. Tell me how one is supposed to answer 6 questions with 8 indirect and 8 direct quotations in no more than 1000 words?? He needs to stick to teaching math!!
I honestly could not imagine a better professor. Kind, caring, and awesome to talk to. It felt like he really cared about my success. The way the work is formatted, you get out what you put in. I really enjoyed math this semester because of him. I highly recommended taking a class with Professor Stavrou if you have the oppurtunity.
Professor Stavrou was a breath of fresh air. In light of COVID, he did everything possible as an educator to help his students. He is very empathetic and has set up the course modules in an amazing way. Watch the lecture videos, take notes, and use the textbook to clarify - and you will do wonderful. He doesn't give any trick questions.
For Math 110 online one. it was easy as long as you do all the practices question and watch all the videos.
Immediate responses with homework and a chance to fix your mistakes for full marks
Never would have expected a Calculus course to be considered an average booster. Dr. Stavrou made this course easy to understand. Would definitely take another class taught by him!
Short lecture videos with a lot packed in for the summer class. Answered questions right away. Lots of time for assignments.
such an easy 100
He has been teaching math classes via online many terms. He prepares lecture notes and videos in timely manner. If you ask question through email, he would reply it in timely manner. However, I acknowledge that he is inclined to be impersonal.
Awesome prof! Very accessible outside of class and replies in a timely manner. He teaches in a way that is easy to understand and learn from. Also super generous with grades and flexible with due dates. You can tell he cares about his students as he is also very accommodating and friendly!
Videos were cheerful and helpful. The tutorial questions in the textbook (paid online access) were the exact same format as the assignment questions, which made it quite easy, especially as somebody who struggles with math.
Punishes whole class because some students were cheating. Yeah I understand that sucks for him but the fact he chose to punish students that did nothing wrong is ridiculous.
Okay ya, he is an okay prof, the class is pretty easy. All open book take-home assignments/exams. But dude, giving us notes and less than 15 min of "lecture" per week on easy problems is not teaching. He is very accessible and nice but very brief videos make it tough to want to do math. Good thing the class is easy.
punished the whole class because a few people cheated, and because of it he made the assignments 10 times harder than they already were. ever since it happened I am unable to get higher than a 70 on the assignment.
Punishes the entire class. Removes bonus questions part way through the year. Gives less than 20 min of lecture per week. Good thing the assignments are open book and easy. Will guilt you if you complain because it's an open book course and the textbook is free. Okay thanks, that doesn't mean you can slack off on the teaching.
Maths104: One of the great professors I had. He is very sincere and puts in an effort. I am not good at maths but the videos he shared of the chapter were very straightforward. His quizzes and assignments were very straightforward. I got A+ which I had never expected to get in Maths. No midterm. you could totally take this class as an elective.
I don't understand with all the ratings here. He recorded 1-2 mins video explaining the very basic rules of each modules. and gave harder questions to do. I literally had to search on YouTube videos to do the assignments. Maths is all about practising which he should have given us to ! to anyone who struggles in maths DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM!!
Seems to be a tough year for everyone. He answered emails quickly and we met a few times a week so I could get extra help. Everything is open book and you get lots of time to finish 7 assignments.. very manageable course and I like how he organized material on canvas.
He is phenomenal! I learned alot from him this term about how to conduct research and how to write academically. He's a humble man with a ton of degrees and accolades. Take a class with him if you want to go into research!
Class is easy, prof made it harder. Less than 20 minutes of lectures, very hard to translate his brief simple lecture notes into being useful for his difficult questions he assigns. If you aren't a super eager student and don't want to spend a ton of time trying to learn from the confusing videos, use a free tutor from the school. Saved my grade!!!
Very easy to get a high grade if you go through his modules. Videos are short but to the point.
Dr. Stavrou provided useful and concise videos that were on the same level of difficulty as the assignment questions. He also gave us access to a free textbook and numerous practice questions that were almost identical to many of the questions found on the assignments. Overall, this was a very fair and manageable course if you worked hard.
No exams or test, only assignments. He had bonus questions to improve your mark before some people cheated in his class. But very straightforward. The only thing that bothered me was that when I asked a question, he would not answer directly and took about 3 times of me asking the same question before he finally answered.
Prof would not not explain his topics and get mad when you asked. I would watch his videos and read the textbook and he still would not help. Even with zoom meetings to ask question he would not explain anything.
i do not understand the high ratings here. lectures are just him slowly reading the downloadable notes word for word and assignments often have questions that are 10x harder than what was shown. there is no real final, but he will still refuse to extend the last assignment; even if you have three finals to work on during the assigned dates.
His modules in Canvas were very organized and easy to follow. The assignments and final were straightforward. Although I never needed extra help he always made himself available for online office hours.
Lectures were useless, just read notes from the textbook word for word. Practice questions were much harder than the examples provided and worked through. He ended up fully changing the syllabus after the class started and was hard to find the updated one, which ended up in a lot of confusion for me. Very frustrating experience overall.
He was accommodating whenever I needed more time to finish work. His videos are based off the textbook so you know where he gets his info and homework problems from. I like that I could work at my own pace through the learning modules
Out of all my web classes this semester , his was the most organized. Gave bonus questions on his assignments. I like that he made his class asynchronous so that I could work.
Great prof. Provided extra help. He gave bonus questions on assignments which was awesome. I would take his class again
I loved this professor, I took Math 102 with him because I couldn't in Grade 12. I was scared at first but ended this course with a 99. A few of his assignments have bonus questions which give you higher marks ex (105/100) but not all of them. The textbook was free & open book, but personally I never used it. He was somewhat available via email
Only assignments. I took this as a summer course and it was 4 assignments (17.5% each) and a final exam worth 30%. He provided how many points each question was worth so it was easy to tell how much information to provide. He offered bonus questions which helped keep my grade up even though I made a few mistakes. Quick email responses. Solid guy.
Stavros is an amazing professor for first year math. All his assignments include a bonus mark which boosts your grade a bunch and can help you pass. He is easy to reach and ready to explain during his online office hours. 100% recommend him (even if you're worried about online classes), he is 10/10.
Amazing prof. Genuinely enjoyed his lectures. All assignments were open book and you had the chance to work with a partner if you'd like. Provided extra marks on assignments, which gave you the chance to get a higher grade. Would definitely recommend.
I enjoyed Math 110 with Stavros Stavrou! His lectures are very clear and helpful. He has bonus marks on each assignment which covers any silly mistakes you might have. The final exam was fair but was marked harder than the assignments so make sure to practice lots! He helped me through zoom if I had any concerns.
Was a great class and didn't have to use any of the textbook but he did screw everyone over on the final
Professor Stavros Stavrou is a nice person who's accessible outside of class. His "lectures" are short 10-15 minute videos of him reading through the textbook and going through very simple examples that he does not explain in detail. When it comes to tests it seems he finds the hardest questions possible. For some this teaching works but not all.
Stavros is a genuinely caring prof. Don't take a class from him expecting to just do your own thing, he wants to talk, discuss progress, and work through things collaboratively. ERES 810 was a bit heavy on the paper writing, breaking one major paper into 4 smaller sections. But I am not a confident writer and I still enjoyed writing every section
One of the best math classes I've taken. He gives clear examples in his videos and the assignments basically have the same questions but with different numbers, so you'll do good as long as you watch the videos.
I was hesitant to take this math course online, but the material that was provided assured for success. He gave great examples for the math questions and has great lecture notes as well. The textbook was provided as a PDF online so students were not required to buy it.
This was a good course especially for someone who has never done calc before. The final assignment was graded a lot harder than all the assignments because it was the only assignment he graded himself.Everything else was graded by the TAs and it seemed like he did not check over their work.Hard to get in contact with, would not respond to my emails.
Professor Stavrou gave clear, understandable, and engaging lectures. His lectures contained many good examples and explained the background concepts well. All assignments and tests had bonus questions so it was easy to do well. He was always available after class or by Zoom to help students. There was some assigned reading to do out of class.
You will receive negative marks for mistakes on assignments. Say if you have 10 questions, each worth 10 marks, so you should receive 100 if all are done correctly, if you get 1 wrong you should receive 90, but you will receive 80 because of the way it is marked.
Dr. Stavrou was one of the best profs I have ever had. Funny, kind and communicative. I came into this course with a little background in calculus; however, for a first year calc course, this was a breeze! The assignments were very straightforward and directly related to the (free!) textbook. I highly recommend for math 110!
Absolutely horrible. Everything we are doing I have done already in high-school foundations 30. Yet however he somehow manages to overcomplicate, underexplain, and provide very poorly explained examples. Doesn't provide any feedback on assignments so the reason to why you loose marks is not made clear. Horrible
Stavros gives little information in his lectures. All he does is read from the textbook and provide no examples of how the answers are achieved. It's frustrating to pay for a class when I could take the textbook and read it myself and receive the same information. Homework has no feedback which is crucial for math classes.
Good class if its your first time taking calc, but be careful. He has accused students of cheating if they do questions in their own way, instead of being identical to his way, so god forbid you think for yourself(check old reviews to see these occurrences)If you use old strategies from HS/watch tutorials for extra help, this is not the prof for you
The textbook is free and all assignments are released at the start of term so I worked ahead. He answers emails quick and his office hours are flexible.. bonus questions on all the assignments so I'm going into the final with 100%. He is clear about how to do assignments so don't cheat !! The 48 hour exam was very fair. Highly recommend!
He caught some people cheating on the Final using AI and Chegg and reported them. What do you expect? He gives an open book exam so just do your work honest and don't ruin it doe the rest of us. His modules are laid out clear. His Graders sometimes make mistakes but if you meet with him on Zoom he fixes it. His dog Dory is cute!!
I like his asynch web courses as it fits better in my schedule as a mom of 2. He makes it easy to get a good grade if you do the readings, the weekly discussion boards on time and the 2 essays. Rubrics are clear. I appreciated the live grading option for the essays as it helped improve my referencing. Don't use chatgpt to cut corners or he gives 0!
This guy is a beaut! Bonus questions on everything and he gives old assignments with answer keys to model what he wants. He gives Open book finals because he knows test taking is stressful. If you can't succeed it's a YOU problem. My only issue is that his TAs didn't grade most of my assignments accurately but Dr Stavrou regraded them when I asked.
I took Stavrou's online course after dropping a lecture section last year. His is better because his assignments are more reasonable and he doesn't have midterms. The open book final was a huge sigh of relief. I met him weekly for Zoom office hours.
GOAT !!!! And a Very down to earth guy. He makes math a cakewalk compared to other profs and the fact alone that he gives free open access to the textbook and learning materials shows how compassionate he is. I paid over 1500$ in books this year alone so this is MUCH APRECIATED
Should not be teaching Education in regard to Indigenous studies courses. Sounds like he is a good math teacher but doesn't grasp the basic concepts of the material he is trying to teach/ grade. Was also very smug in his communications via email.
I enjoyed his class! His modules were very organized and the assignment essays were straight forward. Discussion boards were an easy way to get marks. He grades essays live if you ask and honestly it was a huge help! I will be using the book he assigned in my classroom as it was a very good intro to Indigenous pedagogies. Highly recommend him!
Really organized and friendly person. He goes out of his way to connect with students thru Zoom and always cleared my questions up. I took Math102 with him too and did well. Only thing is he expects you to take initiative so don't expect to be spoon fed.
I cannot say enough good things about Dr Stavrou! I am a PhD student and he is the first instructor to give me useful detailed feedback on my essays. I feel very prepared for academic writing because of his style. He legitimately cares about students and gives personalized feedback wherever possible. College of Education should hire him as a prof!
Dr. Stavrou is a caring prof! He makes announcements regularly to make sure everyone is on track and even extended the deadline for the assignments a couple of times! He gives bonus Q's on the assignments. There is no midterm and the final is open book. What more could you possibly ask for? The lecture vids are just him reading the textbook tho.
I just started this class with Stavros and thought it would be ok since he has a good rating and im not sure if its diff in person but online its horrible. He doesn't explain how he solves equations most of the time if not always. Also has some lectures where he doesnt even bother to teach it in general so youre stuck trying to learn it on your own
Really fair and helpful when I needed to meet on Zoom. My grandmother got sick and I fell behind but he was great about accommodating my situation
I was in another section and hated it. Just switched to his and it's working much better for me. I am fine with being a self directed learner but I know not everyone likes it. Find what works for you!
He can be tough and emphasizes on being a hard worker when it comes to work, but I think that is highly respectable. The assignment load is manageable. The assignments expectation, he wants to see step by step and explanation on what you are doing; I really like this way of assignments.
Dr. Stavrou sets you up with everything you need to succeed in this class - lecture notes, videos, past assignments, and a FREE online textbook. Assignments are not difficult and often have "bonus questions" that he announces after the fact from the set. Do NOT cheat, he is very particular about cheating and academic integrity and WILL fail you.
Probably a better in-person prof than an online one. I reached out for help and got 'check the answer pdf to see where you went wrong', which wasn't helpful. I found his video lectures hard to follow, and he is strict on no outside help, including Youtube help. For someone who needs to see the step by step clearly, he would be best in-person.
This was the last class of my ed degree and it was perfect! He is easy and straightforward with what he expects. I worked ahead and finished with the highest grade I've ever got. Very clear and organized.
Good course if you just need to fill a math requirement and not pursue any higher levels. Would stay away from this prof as he only likes students to do questions his way, rather than any other strategy you have learned prior. He has a history of accusing students for cheating if you don't answer the questions HIS way, so be aware of that!!
Not a very considerate or compassionate professor. Lost my dad and he failed me for missing an assignment.
It was an awful experience. There was no teaching, just reading and writing assignments. I could sit at home, read a book, and save on tuition fees. What a waste of time, money and effort.
Content will be a breeze if you've taken high school calculus, otherwise you may have to put more work in as Dr. Stavrou just reads off of the textbook and barely elaborates on the concepts. Other than that, the amount of questions he assigns are very condensed, which i like very much. If you do the questions he assigns, assignments are easy.
The videos were horrible didn't learn a thing. All he did was read the text in the video
Very easy marker
Stavrou was an okay professor, but super easy class. His lectures basically just involved him reading off of the textbook, and honestly the textbook does a better job at explaining the content. But assignments were super easy and offered lots of bonus marks. The final exam was five questions long and you had two days to complete it.
Do not take a class from him unless there is no other option. He is rude and does the bare minimum. Does not respond to emails. Dumps everything off on his TAs. Have to do the math his way (not any other way you have learned) but does not rly teach how to do it. I've heard he randomly accuses ppl of cheating so be aware of that and to defend urself
Professor Stavrou provides a well-structured online course with helpful resources like lecture videos and a free textbook. While strict on academic integrity, he's approachable and offers extra support. For first-time calc students, the class workload is manageable, and unstuck AI can supplement study prep.
Stavros is a good prof. Very attentive to student emails and deadlines. However he kinda of reads off the textbook. But his tests were really easy.
Prof. Stavrou's online course was pretty easy, though the lectures didn't really help. Tips: Follow the course timeline, do the homework, view the previous assignments and solutions he posts to help you with your current assignments, and submit all your assignments on time. Dorm Master gives you bonus marks on your overall grade if your dorm wins.
His canvas courses are laid out really good. Easy to manage the workload. He gives good feedback on the assignments to make improvements. His lectures explained the right amount so I felt prepared but not overwhelmed
Very funny, told many stories, and cared for students. Good workload and his lectures were very easy to comprehend, coming from a high schooler who was taking a university level course with no prior knowledge of calculus 30, and was still finishing pre-calculus 30 at the time. Finished with 98%. Short and easy assignments, quizzes, and final exam.
Loved the way this course was set up. The assignments are straight forward, and he is always accessible for help through appointment or his weekly tutorials. Made class fun by adding a 'Sorting Ceremony' type game to earn bonus marks. Content isn't really difficult it's mostly highschool math review. He provides a free online textbook as well!
