Challenges old attitudes and to have students think beyond their comfort zones
excellent professor, knows what he's talking about, very interesting!
Excellent teacher.Very clear and to the point.Take him and you will again.
Dr. Buckridge's class is fun and challenging. I will definitely take him again.
Very intelligent Prof! Must take his class! Challenges you to think for yourself
Look out if he doesn't like you-he'll make it known. A great lecturer.
Great prof. You'll learn a lot cause he makes things very clear. Take good notes
Repeats himself a lot - won't acknowledge any opinions other than his own
best history prof, gives awesome study guides, makes it really easy and fun
I loved this guy. He is the best prof, I work my schedule to have his classes
He is a wonderful prof. kept me interested in history. Get his classes!!!

Favorite HIS prof. Intelligent thought-provoking w/ great voice!
A very good professor, any questions comments or observations
great professor. he makes it fun. i never miss a class with him.
The best Prof. I ever had. I will definately take him again. Great voice
he's awesome, but i've had him 4 times and he seems to get crabbier every year
This class will get you to think and Prof Buckridge will make you laugh as well.
Awesome Prof., very interesting lectures keeps you focused with outside info.
Great Prof. Repeats "At the end of the day..." constantly.
High-Quality professor, very personable and great speaking skills. Enjoyed class
Great teacher, keeps you entertained
Take him, you will not regret it for a moment esp hist majors!
one of the best profs at GVSU
Teaches well, invites questions and then insults you for 20 minutes.
He's my favorite teacher, LOVE the accent and he is very well spoken!!
best prof i've had. makes you think and very professional. take him
Good lectures, fun class, amazing person. I work my schedule around his classes.
wonderful professor, lives up to all the hype
his South African history class should be mandatory for all students. he is teaches you so much about how evil the diamond trade is. funny guy, semi tuff grader.
Great prof. Kind of a tough grader though! Tends to take his time on what he likes, but rushes through what he doesn't which doesn't help on the essay exams, but I still recommend taking him.
If you don't take a class with this man you will regret it for the rest of your natural life-- and maybe after! AMAZING history professor!!!
awesome prof. he is a tough grader but it was worth the work. if you don't take him you'll regret it
Damn good teacher, you will learn alot. Grades Hard, but a fun class to be in.
Great Professor. Loves to make the class intersting. Can definatly hold your attention. Exams aren't bad if you study good. Papers are pretty easy.
Very easy prof, interesting class. Make sure to take notes even when he tells you to put down your pencils and listen b/c it will probably show up on the exam.
Wonderful professor. Brilliant, kind, and thoughtful. Concerned about student welfare. Teaches about groups marginalized by history. His voice makes you want him to lecture for hours. Hates early morning classes as much as his students! Exams cover a lot.
Great professor, he takes his time explaining material so everybody understands...tests are easy. Just take notes and show up and you'll get an A
possibly the very best history prof ever, and atleast on this campus. don't miss class, you won't want to anyway. inspiring prof
Brilliant and very inspiring professor. He really knows what he is talking about and makes class interesting. Must really be able to study and memorize to get an A, but he lets you know whats on exams.
Great prof, very laid back. grading can be hard but if you try youll be fine. His voice and attitude captivate you. Best prof I've had, you'll like him.
He was so interesting and helpful. Definitely take him. Exams were straight off study guide, papers were a little tougher but still not hard. Such a fun teacher!!
great class. At the end he asks if there are any questions. Umm yes, can profs date students?
Love Him, tests directly from study guide, no suprises. Best History prof. I have ever had.
You will have no problem staying awake. There's some nice eye candy up front and, as a bonus, he has a great voice. Sometimes he calls on random people so make sure you read the assignments. Excelent class - don't miss out on it.
I had this prof for many different history courses and was very impressed! He is a captivating person with such wonderful real stories. He loves what he does and shows it, helps students want to learn. His classes are no easy ride, but if you work at it you will do well!
This prof is from Jamaica and let me tell you..I have to agree that he is hot. The accent does it for me. Beside these shallow oberservations...he is a great teacher. The class is difficult but fair. The tests are straight forward no surprises.
This was an all around great class. He has a passion for what he teaches. The exams are straight forward (he tells you exactly what will be on it.) He grades hard on papers. Oh and he's a hottie. ;)
Can he please stop being so damn sexy? I have trouble remembering what we're studying or what day it is he's around. Class is great- blah, blah, blah. The thing that gets me to class is knowing that I'll get to be in the same room as this fine man. "The prof that lauched a thousand dirty thoughts."
grades overly hard on papers. I wasn't thrilled about that. It was thrilling to watch him flash that smile of his though. He has a lot of "flirty" facial expressions which is prob. why he gets so many "ooh he's sooo CUTE" responses.
Minimal work for class. Two papers (only have to be 4 pages long) and two exams. Exams are straight forward (directly from study guides). He grades papers hard though. You get to redo one paper at the end of the semester. Captivating voice for a somewhat boring subject. Not always available during o
Best history prof at GVSU. His lectures are actually interesting and he uses more than one tone of voice. Very clear expectations, but has high standards.
The smartest man I've ever met! SERIOUSLY! My class was 3 hours and it flew by. Relatively easy class, grades hard on papers, but you get to redo one. The only thing is, he's hard to get a hold of and meet with about papers and stuff. But in the end take him if you can!
GREAT PROF!! I encourage you taking him at least once. He is from Jamaica and loves to talk about it! Really gets into the topic and class discussion is very interesting!!!
good lecturer tough grader. gives out study guide that sums up exam. he'll call on you randomly so if your daydreaming about your future w/him in jamaica & whether or not his parents will think you're white trash you better stop and start focuing on the readings for the day.
He's got a bit of a different teaching style than what I am used to, but he is very helpful and makes the info easy to understand. I wish the semester was longer so we could get into more detail though. Overall, fairly easy class. Excellent instructor, I recommend him.
Wonderful professor. Knows subject extremly well. His own personal stories of Africa are very moving as well as his passion for the country. Highly reccomend him especially if you want to learn more about the various nations of Africa.
Your never right unless your Steeve.. Makes you afraid to ever answer a question because your always wrong. Talks about his stupid personal stories all the time.
Whoever left that last comment is totally wrong. If you want to just regurgitate the books then you are the epitome of boredom.Steeve has real-life stories that add to the materials studied.Whoever left that last comment needs to realize that history is about PEOPLE not just random facts just b/c he may not say you're right doesn't mean you're wrong
He is great prof. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. He knows his stuff too. One smart man, not to mention incredibly good looking. Make sure you pay attention in class(and not daydreaming about him) because he will call on people randomly.
Excellent prof. Knows his stuff, gives study guide for tests, very little group work. he does call on people randomly, so read the articles and bring them to class. i loved his class and am taking him again.
Just AWESOME!
Good, though not great. Speaks clearly and informatively about Africa. Unfortunately, he has the annoying tendency to talk down to the class (example: "Do you all know what a goat is? I'm getting blank stares"). He also fell far behind his syllabus schedule - hard to guess what you should read for the next class, and he's strict about that.
If u can get him, do it. Just take notes and the midterms and finals are easy. U will learn more from him than any other prof. here.
He is fairly smart but more arrogant! He asks questions & says "Think, think, think" or "I'm getting blank stares" until people answer, then ignores what they said and gives his bulleted lists that are often repeats. We spent five weeks on Egypt, ch.1. Paper topics are moronic & he wants an echo of his feminism. Easy B if you can stand him.
He was a good teacher, fun to listen too. He is very knowledgable. Exams are easy if you come to class and take notes.
He is a great professor. He knows what he is talking about, but sometimes goes off on tangents about feminism and other related topics. He makes our class laugh a lot and is very helpful.
I LOVED him! He can be a little intimidating at times, but it's not because he's trying to be mean, he just really wants to challenge his students. He does have a tendency to go off on tangents, but he also brings a lot of interesting information to the table. He makes history intriguing by giving you little-known facts. Tests are easy w/ guides
He was a great teacher, he can go a little fast at times and he tends to go off on tangents at times but he really pushes you to learn about the subject. He makes you want to care about what your learning. All of the grades are based on 2 papers and 2 tests but it was a great class!
Self-centered: refused to admit his Greek mythology was off, tells you to write only what "is important" (on the test), isn't in his office, expects you to foresee what he wants in an essay (religion, acceptance of societal roles, feminism) without giving you a topic! & drones on about Sappho and obscure AA women. Not even hot. A joke.
A brilliant professor. The accent helps as well. Smart as hell, focuses on African and Women's issues. If you have the chance, take Dr. Buckridge's classes. He will keep you entertained!
A little bit self-centered. Has a tendency to talk down to his students. Has the unique ability to make even the most interesting topics sound boring. Likes to focus on things that aren't related to the class, especially if he has an outside interest in them. Grades fairly easy and lets you rewrite a paper to improve your grade.
Really cool class - interesting in class discussions. 2 pop quizzes so make sure you know the geography of Africa. Midterm and Final Exam are easy - gives you the best study guides. Write down everything in class and you'll do well in this class. Take advantage of EXC opportunities cause it's hard to get an A if you mess up on anything else.
BRILLIANT MAN!! We are here to LEARN and be open minded! He knows a lot-- more than most of us wish we could learn. He has life experience all over the world! If you want to be cultured-- TAKE HIM!!! HE's fan-freaking-tastic!!!
He engages the class and demands participation with fast paced lecture. Take notes. He tends to call people out and intimidate a bit, but he did so constructively. No lame power points either, he knows his stuff. Women and Africa are his specialties, expect both to show up in whatever course. (GREAT PROF)
Amazing professor. take notes in the class and listen to what he has to say, i pry dont have to even say that because there is just something about his presentations that interest you and make you pay attention. you will be well informed on your subjects and have a pretty good time doing so. over all one of the best professors i have had.
What an interesting guy...a jamaican background with a very clear speaking voice, straight from Oxford...many life experiences throughout the world to share with his classes...not to mention his bit in the fashion industry...very good teacher...very inspiring. Take any of his classes, they will stay with you for life.
Buckridge is awesome! I loved his African history class. He's very brilliant and knows a great deal about Africa. His exams are all identification/essay format. You get a study guide with a bunch of terms and you'll identify ten and then he'll give you multiple essay choices and you pick one. Essays should incorporate the notes and your Collins tex
AWFUL prof. Never in his office hours. Called me by the name of the girl sitting next to me ALL YEAR. Arrogant, complete jerk, never wants to help when you're struggling. Gives you good study guides though - study them well. Also has some funny quotes.
one of the coolest jamacian guys you will ever meet. smart, down to earth nice guy. tries to get to know everyone. hard class but if you take good notes and go to every class then the study guides are manageable and tests are aceable. all writing tests which kinda sucks but you can get partial credit. great guy
Knows his stuff, although really arrogant. Normally not in a good mood. Brings in interesting artifacts to class. He lets you know what will be on the exam and is pretty leniant on his essay grading. Be prepared to hear a lot of feminist and anti-colonialism views. Overall, pretty interesting, would take again.
Has the best voice you will ever hear. Knows his stuff and lectures a lot, but he's interesting and throws in a lot of stories too. Tests are a lot of writing but he prepares you pretty well.
He is so passionate about history he will make you love any aspect! Great guy, but grades hard. Required reading is questioned on the next class, so make sure to do it.
Buckridge was one of the most interesting profs I've had. Has some amazing stories about Africa. His tests can be hard, they're essays and identifications, but very passable. Can be a bit pompous but overall a great teacher. Learned a lot, would take him again!
He is a very quality professor. He is interesting and his voice is AMAZING. I never get tired of listening to him!!
Buckridge was a pretty cool professor. He made the class interesting and relatively laid back for a 495. I really, really liked that he let us choose our topic for the research paper rather than making us stick to a particular subject. The only thing I did not like in his class was the group film project.
He's a cool Jamaican guy that's super in to what he does and makes the class really interesting. He sets up his lectures to help organize notes and makes a point to tell you the details you absolutely need to know.
He's is super in to what he does and makes the class really interesting. He sets up his lectures to help organize notes and makes a point to tell you the details you absolutely need to know. He cares greatly about his students and there future after school.
He just lectures without anything to guide you except occasionally he will use overheads or write on the board. There were two quizzes, two exams, and a paper. He gives you a study guide for the exams but not quizzes. You must come to class to past because almost everything is on the notes. Willing to work one on one especially with the paper.
Professor Buckridge is by far the best professor that i've had at grand valley. His lectures were extremely interesting. He's an amazing professor. His passion for history really shows. If you attend lectures and really listen, the class is super easy. 2 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 paper. not bad at all. take this professor. i promise he's worth it!!!
All he ever did was lecture, and he talks so fast that you're hand hurts within minutes from trying to keep up in notes. There are no outlines, and he skips around a lot depending on his mood. He was very pompous. There is a huge research paper that he gives only vague guidelines on. On the other hand, he gives good study guides for exams.
Professor Buckridge is an amazing teacher and it's obvious he really cares about his students. He is well-traveled and is incredibly successful. The best part about his class is the slides and stories he tells about his travels at the end of the semester. It was a privilege to be taught by him.
Dr. Buckridge is easily my favorite professor so far, and one of the most interesting people I've ever met. I will probably go out of my way to take another of his classes in the future. Definitely go to his office hours for your paper and start writing it early, that'll ensure that you get a good grade and a paper you're proud of. Easy grader.
Mr. Buckridge is a great teacher who is very passionate about what he teaches. Tips for his class: 1. DO NOT hand write your notes, he talks a lot and fast. 2. participate in class, he does grade you based on participation 3. create a short & simple study guide before each quiz and you'll get an easy A 4. he will tell you need the book, you don't
Took him for understand Africa. The course was not difficult, a very easy A.
Professor Buckridge is a great prof, very knowledgeab and a well rounded, interesting individual. HOWEVER,He gives no slide shows for lectures so you must write notes by what he is saying. He will write key terms on the board but you have to write down all he says and half the time I can't keep up. Nice professor but not a fan of teaching style.
Professor Buckridge is an amazing professor, and I would recommend him to anyone. It is hard to get an A in the class, but easy to get an A-. 2 tests each semester are worth 2/3 of your grade, and their is a lot of writing required for the class. Discussions however made the class all worth it. The prof is the most interesting person I have met.
To start off, Professor Buckridge is so attractive so it may be a little hard to focus. Personally, I learned so much from his class. One of my favorite class I took at GV. He is very knowledgeable. You must take good notes if you want to pass. All test/surprise quizzes are based on your notes. You will not need the textbook so don't purchase it.
Professor Buckridge is such a great professor. By far one of the most interesting people I've met which made going to class easy. He's very understanding to students who show up to class and listen, but gets annoyed with those who don't. The two tests and two quizzes are easy as long as you take good notes, he'll tell you what you should know.
Great Prof. He's one of the most interesting people I've met and tells great life stories. As long as you show up to class and take decent notes, it'll be cake. There's 2 quizzes, 2 exams, and a final paper which are all quite easy if you ask me. You won't regret taking Prof Buckridge.
I loved having Professor Buckridge for AAA200. You certainly have to actually attend all classes, but they're all interesting and he is hilarious. As long as you take good notes its easy to pass all the quizes and exams. Few things go in the grade book, but its simple quizes, one big paper, and a midterm and final. Would definitely recommend!
Brilliant guy. Knows African history inside and out, gives intriguing lectures, and grades very mercifully. If you show up to class and pay attention, his honors class was a breeze.
Professor Buckridge was my favorite professor that Ive had. His lectures were engaging, he was funny, and I learned so much. You have to work for your grade, but an A is obtainable.
Professor Buckridge is an amazing professor. I have absolutely no bad words to say about him or his teaching style. I would take this class again honestly, especially since I missed out on half of a semester with him due to Covid-19.
Genuinely one of the most amazing people you will ever meet. His knowledge is so vast and his life experiences are incredible. He cares for his students and the subjects he teaches. His class may not be an easy A, but it is so insanely worth it. Take his class. Youll be so glad you did.
One of the best professors I have ever had at Gv so far! the class is very easy to follow I took him online and only had 4 assignments no quizzes or test, and even though history is boring sometimes he made the class very interesting with the way he teaches, I would take him for any subject if I could!
Not only is he one of the best professors you will ever have, he is one of the best people you will ever meet. He is funny, insanely intelligent, and has so much life experience that he is willing to share. You will not regret taking his classes, in fact, youll regret it if you dont. He cares about his students and WANTS you to succeed!
This class is 4 modules, each with 3-4 discussion questions that need to be at least 2 paragraphs each. It requires a lot of reading and critical thinking, but you have a few weeks to complete each module. He is a pretty easy grader. DO NOT wait until the last minute to do the assignment, because they are very time consuming. Great prof though.
Professor Buckridge is very passionate about what he does. He ensures that students can understand his lectures and makes them interesting.
Professor Buckridge is a very interesting and funny guy. I like him as a person, but as a professor, he is not my favorite. There aren't really any regular homework assignments, just a few mini essays and two big essays. The textbook for this class is very boring. He never put a single grade in BlackBoard, and isn't good at responding to emails.
He is an AWESOME prof. he's so nice and clearly very passionate about what he teaches. there are pop quizzes, but he hints very heavily a couple days leading up to them. the course is only grades by a few things (quizzes, one paper, midterm and final) but he is a pretty light grader. As long as you try in this class, you'll succeed
I have had a lot of great professors here, Professor Buckridge is one of the few who isn't. He spends most classes talking about near meaningless things for the first 15-45 minutes of class and then speeds through the rest of the lecture because we don't have enough time. He also rejects student ideas. Have much more to say but dont have the space.
Professor Buckridge is an engaging lecturer who makes even dry history topics interesting. Take notes digitally, participate actively, and use unstuck AI and the textbook to ace the quizzes and exams. Overall, a rewarding and manageable course.
Buckridge is a king i loved him history was never my thing it still kind of isnt but i was truly fascinated by some of the things i learned in his course, hes also pretty understanding and hes funny. i was nervous about the course but he is good, take him
This professor is one of the most entertaining and knowledgeable professors I have ever had. He cares so deeply about what he teaches and his lectures were so intriguing the class flew by every time I had it. He expects good work from his students but if you study and read the book, you will do just fine.
Course is easy, all you have to do is pay attention, take notes, and participate sometimes. 2 exams & 2 pop quizzes although he literally tells you when the pop quiz will be. Tough grader and expects you to know the material after he teaches it but overall amazing prof and he makes history interesting and fun.
