easy class for the most part, nice guy and pretty thorough
waste of time. you'll fall asleep the minute you walk in the door. his lecture notes are completely incoherent.

This is one of those deals where what you take from the class depends on what you put into it. Professor Hoffman is very intelligent; do the reading and you'll be fine.
Easy class... some days you could fall asleep, but for the most part things were interesting. He seemed to have a hard time teaching sometimes, but for the most part it was good.
boring...but straightforward..if u able stay awake to take notes..then u will be fine
he is very intelligent and knows what he is talking about. he makes the class have a light atmosphere and seems very approachable with questions even in a large lecture.
great
I had him for an advisor as well as PS101. I thought he was a great guy, very helpful.
I learned alot from that class, his accent is think but once you get used to it, hes very clear and straight forward. liked all the experiments he talked about, exams can be tricky.
Accent is understandable. The tests are tricky, and the questions can be obscure. Overall a fun class, and a great guy.
Let me put it this way: A 50% on the midterm was a C!! 39 people got an A out of roughly 100. On top of that, he is hilarious in class. Take his class before the dean makes him deflate his grades.
He's German! He's soo funny. Some days you can sleep through the class. For the most part it's ok. Tests are a little hard but he curves it very nicely!
He's so funny and cute. His lectures CAN get boring at times but his exams are fairly easy if you read the textbook and study a little. Very nice man.
Really nice guy, and pretty funny. A few tricky questions on the tests, but if you do the readings and go to lecture you'll do well.
easy class, but he is not very available and tends to think his office hours are optional. he will blow you off and pass you on to the tf's. boring lectures, but not difficult at all.
Definitely an easy class. The lectures aren't very hard, and he'll let you out whenever he's done, even if its early. The only hard part are his tests - he purposely makes the questions ambigious, but he's a good professor and has a great sense of humor.
Explains everything very thouroughly and with a great sense of humor. He is sooo funny. His tests are a little weird: multiple choice answers that are ambiguous. He has an odd tendency to make interesting topics boring and boring topics interesting.
His class was enjoyable, and usually over 10-15 minutes early, but his tests (3 total) are ambiguous. You won't understand what that mean now, but you will. The grading is weird because there is a really HUGE curve, so never sure how well I'm actually doin
Attendance is mandatory and a good chunk of your grade. Study the book closely, as anything is fair game for the tests. He is not very clear about what will be on the exams (he doesn't provide any sort of study guide) but he is a fair grader.
he's very funny and entertaining during lecture. lectures end early most days, and tests are ambiguous. nice curve so most ppl end up w/ good grades if you read the book
I would suggest you take psychology with another professor..this guy is entertaining but his midterms are impossible...everything that you think is going to be on the exam never is, and if you don't study the book carefully you are pretty much screwed..nice curve tho..but take psych with prof ely.
psychology has the potential to be very interesting. prof hofman however kinda screw that up. he doesn't seem to be very smart. attending lectures will not be enough for tests. his lectures will teach you nothing. read the book!
He is so funny and tries to make lectures as interesting as he can. His tests are pretty much applying the concepts you learned in class. He is very understanding, nice, and fair. You will learn something in his class! Although his tests are a little hard, I'm really glad I took him!
Tests are not as hard as people make them out to be. If you go to class and do the reading, it's no problem, so use your logic and figure out why they did bad. Always answers any questions as best he can, taking time to make sure everyone gets the concepts. Funny guy, too. German accent is awesome.
Hofmann was great. His exams were extremely fair and his lectures were fantastic. I am now minoring in psyc after taking this class. My only complain is the grading scheme: a 90 is a B+?
he's a fun teacher. never gets boring. Should READ the textbook before coming to class. Outlines and movies don't really help for tests. Then again, it's a ton of reading. easy test if and only if u read the book. TA is cool too (ms. roh). attendance and participation counts!
wicked easy class. read the book & you'll do fine. attendance counts so don't take this course if you're gonna skip.
Based on other comments, I think he must have switched the book b/c reading the book is NOT enough. Concepts were on the tests that were never mentioned in class or in the book. When you go to talk to him, he doesn't make an effort to correct his mistakes. He didn't even know what was on the test!!!
class went by SO fast, never boring, very funny guy. highly recommend it but attendence counts a lot. easy to get a B, hard to get an A.
AWESOME professor! His tests are very fair, and an A is possible if you put in the effort. Even though the midterms can be tricky (especially the 2nd one this semester), the grades are curved. Lectures never got boring, and I would definitely recommend taking psych 101 with Hofmann over any other prof.
professor was nice, very clear, tests are very fair. ez B, study the terms. He uses alot of examples for the terms, so make sure you really understand the terms.
If u don't want to regret it, don't take this class
I like this class a lot. Hofman's accent keeps things interesting and his tests are very fair, you just have to study.
Hofmann is hilarious-awkward comments galore!!! he is funny, interesting and a good lecturer!!!
fair prof who knows his subject. lectures are good because along with textbook material, he adds other information to keep it interesting.
good lectures, funny at times, fair tests. overall, a good prof.
Very good class. Very interesting, keeps you awake. Only thing i did to get a good grade is read and cram right before it, which wasn't hard because all the material is interesting. Great class.
Very well prepared and approachable. Interesting lectures.
Very organized and interesting, good class. Fair grader. Pretty easy Multiple choice exams. not much work involved in the class AT ALL.
He's a good teacher but the class involves a lot of reading. About 80% of the test material was in lecture but the stuff that wasn't was really specific from random parts of the book. He's a nice guy and interesting.
Prof. Hofman is extremely interesting to watch/listen to, and he peppers his lectures with at-times unfunny puns that still make you laugh. He lectures clearly and deeply, but is very unclear on what material NEEDS to be read. Cramming works very well in this class, but last semesters TFs were very poor. He grades on an USUALLY generous curve.
Hes a pretty good prof & you can tell that he knows his stuff. Going to lecture is best cause he gives you tons of notes, but if you dont then reading the chapter reviews before the exams is helpful. i usually crammed the night before and i got an A- in the class. easy class if youre interested and take the time to study.
GREAT TEACHER!
Great teacher. Lectures are generally structured around the more interesting things of each chapter of the book, although some details that are only in book (which he contributed to writing) are on the exam. Funny guy who keeps you interested.
Stefan Hofmann is a really nice guy, very charming. Lectures are interesting and he always has weird jokes or comments that he likes to share. He tries really hard to be funny, and sometimes he actually is! Watch out for the tests though, he likes to ask random questions that you'll never know the answer to unless you've memorized the book.
hofmann is a really nice guy and his lectures were usually at least mildly interesting and the tests were super easy. definitely recommend his class!
he's a great guy. couldnt cancel lecture on a jewish holdiay but instead gave us optical illusions for 10 minutes and let us go. He'd got a thick german accent and mild trouble with english but thats all i can say against him. Personally i dont dig psychology so it was a waste for me, but if you like it, he's the one.
favorite prof at bu! easy easy easy lectures and tests. total common sense stuff. easy going vibe. more interested in his graduate work. wants you to do well. love him
He takes attendance every day, which really sucks. The tests are pretty particular, but if you study enough you can manage an A. Lectures were fairly interesting.
Great teacher, funny guy, german accent makes class better.
ok i don't get why everyone says he's so great. no homework, no quizzes, grade is based on two midterms and final, he uses the same tests every year so you never get your test back and you can't see your mistakes or why you got the grade you did, class is enjoyable but grading is hard
class is interesting but you HAVE to read the textbook, which can take FOREVER. don't let yourself get behind with the reading because you will regret it. i do not recommend his class mandatory attendance is the only reason to go to class and it's hard to get an a
Very challenging for a 100 level course. Final is cumulative. two midterms. Tests are hard. must read book and go to lectures to do well on tests, unless you are some sort of psych freak. Discussions are mandatory but sometimes absolutely pointless. Teacher is humorous because his accent. Hardest PS 101 teacher
this was ridiculous. this class was harder than cell bio and orgo, and there is something terribly wrong with that. he was a bit of a condescending ass when i asked questions.
there are so many psych teachers.. take this class with someone else! hofmann is nice, but his class is ridiculous, i literally memorized the textbook and could not get higher than a b on any of the midterms.
This was the worst psych class ever. DO NOT TAKE HOFMANN. I went to every lecture and every discussion. I studied my butt off and got a B on everything. You will not be able to sell back your $120 paperback textbook because Hofmann rewrites his own every year. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HOFMANN. he's a waste of time & money!!
Hofmann is a nice guy, and relatively funny. Lecture is relatively interesting. You have to read the textbook, which is a pain, and I don't think I deserved higher than a B for the amount of effort I put into the class. His class is tolerable.
Amazing lectures, really interesting and cracks jokes to keep you awake during early morning classes!
Hofmann's a funny guy, his morning lectures are made a little more tolerable by the jokes me makes. However, sometimes he's a little hard to follow. Also, his tests are almost impossible to get above a B on. They're not always completely relevant.
Prof Hofmann stutters a lot in class and his lecture is extremely boring. The fact that he makes his lectures mandatory makes this class even worse than it already is...you waste time reading the textbook he wrote, which contains a lot of errors and is not a pleasant read, and you have to waste 3 hours of your life going to a stupid lecture.
I liked him. We seemed to learn a lot more than other PS101 classes, but the majority was interesting. There were 2 TAs - mine was useless, the other was fantastic. Don't buy the textbook, I never used it. PS101 with Hofmann was just a normal class - not my favorite but I didn't hate it.
Funny, keeps students engaged in lectures. Insanely curved the first midterm, so that students who didnt do well werent discouraged. Wants students to learn. Maybe not the most exciting class, but decent, not terrible at all. He publishes a new edition of his book every year, which is frustrating. The book was useless, I only used it before exams.
He really tries to add funny commentary to the lectures, and is helpful. His first midterm was slightly difficult, but do-able and had a tremendous scale. Reading the book is strongly encouraged and helpful. One of the TAs is fantastic, and makes discussion so awesome. The class goes by rather quickly, and I'd recommend it.
Great guy
Hofmann has a pretty strong German accent, but he explains the material very well and spends time answering questions during class to make sure everyone understands. Great visual aids: be sure to copy and understand what he puts on the overhead projector. The textbook isn't too great, but it's good for skim-reading before exams.
Professor Hofmann was BOMB!!! He was so cute with his corny little jokes and stuff. I went only the first month and studied ten mins before the tests and I got an A- in the class. Best class for easy grade. NO written work and the TF is INCREDIBLE. LOVE THIS CLASS.
He's really old school. He words the test questions poorly. Relatively easy class. Not bad, not great, just mediocre.
Hofmann is amazing. His class is so much fun. He's a little old school, not very tech-savvy, but you learn a lot, and his jokes plus awesome accent make going to class worth it. On top of all this, the TAs are really helpful and the tests (don't let what anyone else says fool you) are straightforward if you go to lecture and understand everything.
funny teacher! teaches the basics but tests are a bit harder than you would think
Lectures are great-interesting and funny-but the tests can screw you over. It's absolutely necessary to buy the book, but it costs close to $200 and is exclusively sold at Barnes and Noble. Since Hofmann writes it himself he changes the edition every year making it impossible for you to resell. Hardest psych professor, I recommend taking another.
Lectures are mandatory and useless because the tests are based mostly on the textbook. He is very boring and difficult to understand. Your grade is based on 3 tests-I studied a lot and got good grades. He writes terrible test questions that are don't come from the book or lecture and you can't see your exams after grading. Easy but very annoying.
Funny professor and keeps your attention in early morning lectures. Textbook is "rewritten" every year but you never use the book because it is not needed for the exams if you go to lecture. I would suggest buying an old edition used to save money. Overall pretty great class.
Hof is a very nice guy and a knowledgeable, good professor. He makes lectures very funny and interesting, but it's necessary to read the chapters in the textbook to get all the information you need for the exams.
Hofmann's a good professor. He's funny and gets the point aross; reading the textbook is probably necessary. Tests are very easy in my opinion though.
very funny, cracks jokes to keep you attentive, great German accent, sometimes talks too much about unimportant things and it's hard to know what you really need to know for the test. often doesn't even mention things you must know for the test--but don't worry! he puts it all on the review sheet (study straight from it and you'll be fine!).
LOVE HIM AND THIS CLASS! I definitely recommend Hofmann. He is hilarious and awesome! His tests will have a few surprises, but it's easy to do well if you study for tests
Professor Hofmann is very nice and the class is very interesting. Study for the tests though because a lot of material is covered. He is very good at teaching and loves participation. The TF is like that too and she is very nice. I learned a lot in this class and it was very interesting. He also wants to answer questions which is really good.
Professor Hofmann is adorable! He tries to make his lectures funny and interesting by adding little stories, but will often spend too much class time on minor topics. You definitely have to do a little leg work outside of class but the exams aren't too bad provided you brush up. And the TFs are a great resource if you have questions!
Alright, his class is really boring, and test is really tough, 10 chapter information per exam, and you won't get any tips from his PPT, lecture is irrelevant to his test, u must read books, though his never taught anything from books in his lecture, in a word, not choose him, terrible.......
Questions on the test are difficult and unrelated to what you learn in lecture. Memorizing the book is the only way you can do well on the exams. The exams have 8+ chapters in them and each chapter is like 40 pages long. He's a nice guy, but the exams are terrible and discussion doesn't help at all.
HARDEST COURSE EVER. I'm an Econ major and I did not do well on this intro course. He makes the average a C, so forget about curving. Also the tests are literally based off of specific sentences in his 800 page textbook. Therefore you are required to read, understand, and memorize all 800 pages. Would never do again.
Don't take this class. There are mixed reviews in the past, but this year, definitely not a single person would recommend it. His tests are impossible, you have to read the textbook which is so long and tedious. Our class had 6 As for our first midterm and 2 As for our second midterm, in a class of around 200. Just, don't do it. Trust me.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I have ever had at BU. He's not good at presenting materials and explaining concepts. Classes are vague and boring. Exams are hard and the questions are worded strangely. He is also rude to students and doesn't answer your questions. There are lots of great psych profs at BU. AVOID HIM.
Worst. Professor. Ever.
Worst Prof Ever !!!!
He is one of the best instructors at BU. He is a tough grader, but this does not make him a bad instructor, it just makes you a bad student.
LEARNED A LOT. HE IS AWESOME!
Tough class, but great. Prof Hof really knows his stuff.
Hard class but excellent!
Loved it!
Highly recommend it.
one of the best profs ever!
You see some mixed reviews and it looks like some students had an ax to grind. Trust me - Hofmann is a really good prof. He really knows his stuff and wants to make sure that students understand it. Some of the material is challenging, but he explains everything really well. Students need to work hard for an A, but it's possible and totally fair.
Not easy but great prof.
LOVE IT!!!!
The Hof is awesome!
Best class I ever had.
Professor rocks!
He is a great teacher.
Awesome!
I loved this class and I loooved the prof.
EXCELLENT.
I had him as a professor and then as an advisor. He is condescending and rude and has no time for his students. He was a terrible professor and the absolute most useless advisor. The class was very easy, but not worth the terrible attitude you have to put up with.
I am really surprised by the 3.6 overall i see right here. The ps 101 class by Hofmann is TERRIBLE. Ask anyone in his class last semester and you will find his average test score is around 70 and he does not curve the test. No one got an A in the second midterm. You will feel how different your ps101 class would be compared with other professor.
He is a really good instructor but a tough grader. I got an A on both midterms and the final and a friend of mine did as well. I had to study hard, but it's not true what the one student says that there were no A's. He is a demanding, but I learned a lot.
Here's the deal: PS101 is an easy course, but Hofmann is not the best or easiest professor. Lectures: black & white, monotonous and don't contain enough depth for exam. Attendance: 10% of grade, taken every class Office Hours: not very approachable, but will meet with you if you ask. I got an A, but would recommend taking another professor.
You're supposed to keep up with the readings in the textbook if you want to do well on the tests (some things in the textbook aren't covered in discussion or lecture), but I basically haven't opened the thing since I bought it and I'm doing fine. A fun and interesting class, though it might be better if we had more things we were graded on.
Im salty. Grades r only based on 2mid-terms, the final &10% for attendance. The lecture is bland. Test questions don't change much from yr 2 yr so u never get ur tests back. U never know what u got right or wrong on the test. U can't actually learn because u don't know what u don't know, which is ironic because one of the chapters is on learning.
Grade consists of only 2 exams and then the final. Exams have very vague and poorly worded questions, and no one seems to do well - even advisors in the field of psych have taken his exams and gotten some wrong, and the TF's disagree with some of the questions. No matter how much you study, you probably won't do as well as you want to or deserve.
Ridiculous, there were questions on the test from things he mentioned in 2 sentences in class. And considering how much he goes off topic each lecture, it's no wonder that almost everyone got these questions wrong. And also considering how he barely curves and gives vague, unspecific questions, he's a terrible teacher.
Professor Hofmann is one of my favorite professors ever. He is very nice, and tells great jokes. His grading is almost entirely tests, which aren't very hard as long as you study.
Hofmann's class is very lecture heavy and a lot of material is covered, but he also has a good sense of humor and allows for discussion on more heated topics to occur between students. The test questions themselves aren't too hard either so stressing for the midterms isn't necessary. The TF is also really hot js ;)
Good guy.
Professor Hofmann is a really fair professor. The tests were pretty easy as long as you studied and he is really funny. He makes jokes to keep the material interesting. He's really passionate about psych and it shows which helps generate interest. Those who think he is unfair are whiney and need to wake up. This is college
He is honestly a great professor but not easy! Don't expect an easy grade. We had two exams and a final and they count as a majority of the grade. SO come to class pay attention to his lectures, do the readings beforehand and you should be set. He is witty, caring and uses humor in his lectures to engage students. Over all it was a fine class.
He is an amazing lecturer. You'll learn the most out of any psychology class. Participation matters and attendance is taken, but why would you want to miss any of his lectures? The tests are difficult, but if you study hard you can get a good score. He cares for his students and is available outside class. He's flexible and understanding.
Prof. Hofmann is an engaging lecturer. He throws in anecdotes and really helps students engage with material. The tests are somewhat ambiguously worded at times, but fair if you attend class and read the book. It is an interesting course, but by no means easy. Very good intro to psych. Hofmann is a phenomenal lecturer. Highly recommend.
He gives great lectures. The exams are hard but there are no tricks. questions are clear and you do well if you have studied. By studied I mean actually spent time reading each chapter. He curves it if it is beneficial for everyone. questions are short and to the point.
As a renowned psychologist published in the DSM-V, Hofmann really knows his stuff. The material isn't that difficult, just pay attention in lecture- he'll cover 99% of it. The book is only necessary if you really can't understand a topic or for learning mental disorders. Know what's going on and you'll do fine on tests. His personality is A+
Even if his class is one of the hardest PSYCH 101, it is worth it because you really learn. He is extremely prepared and although the exams are hard, he gives many clues about them that help you study. Moreover, he always takes into consideration students' comments.
Great professor! He's funny, keeps you engaged, and really knows the material. Test questions can sometimes be tricky but if you pay attention in lecture and look over the textbook you'll be fine. Overall, good class!
Our grade was only based on 3 tests and attendance/participation, but Professor Hofmann was a very informative professor, and covered all of the semester's topics. He also was very kind with changing the scale for the curve, and also reviewed the test so you knew exactly what was on it.
Great professor. One of the best I have had here. I learned a lot and he really knows his stuff. The tests are not easy but pretty fair. I did OK- but had to work for it. If you are interested in psychology, take him. You will actually learn something!
Professor Hofmann is an understanding and easy going guy, but is still a stern professor and tough yet reasonable grader. He has a lot of empathy so reaching out to him for help is a good move if you're struggling with the class.
if you are a psych major DEFINITELY TAKE HIM. you need to work for a good grade but the work you put in to his class will be VERY helpful in the future psych classes you will take. If you're looking for an easy course, he is not the best prof to take. but psych majors do yourself a favor and take him for 101. he is a great lecturer too
Hofmann's class is very easy. His lectures are very straight forward and outlines things you need to have for the tests. There are only tests throughout the semester and I didn't think it was too tough. Read the textbook that covers everything that is on the test. Also participate in discussion there is a participation grade.
Easiest class I've ever taken. I got a 100 on two of the exams. He gives practice exams and posts study guides. He literally asked us if we liked the grade breakdown and I said the final should be worth the same as the other exams and he had a vote and we did it. Educated and knows his stuff. Straightforward class, no surprises.
Very knowledgeable about the subject but makes class a bit dry. Grades based on a few tests and participation/attendance. He and the TA have said conflicting things, which was confusing. He recommends the textbook but not absolutely necessary. Tests are pretty fair but may have small details not mentioned in lecture. Overall, not a bad professor.
