Keeps the class interesting and keeps you from getting bored. Great prof to take for your history requirement. Very easy to talk to.

He speeks really fast, and always goes over the 50 minutes, but he's more interesting and more understanding than most professors. I'd recomend him.
World History with Professor Zimmers is going to be intimidating and hard at first, but if you go visit him he will help you out so much. Definitely choose him, cuz the class will be hard anyway; may as well have someone interesting and helpful.
zimmers is okay. he does talk fast and discussion section is not a big deal at all. but he isnt a very genreous grader!
By far the better half of the Encounters and Exchanges team with Wall. Awesome lectures and a good discussion leader too. Actually funny!
One of the best profs I've had in my short time at Georgetown. He is young and energetic, and while he does talk fast, it was to my advantage as a quick writer. I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about - he is personable and definitely worth taking.
Class is very funny and his lectures are interesting. He is also very hot!
Zimmers is a really nice guy and really entertaining. His lectures are good and the random tangents he goes off on help keep you awake. Great discussion section leader. Tough grader though. Wish he taught other classes so I could take him again.
I <3 Zimmers. He knows so much and is really funny. Definetly learned a lot in his class, and I actually found his grading to be quite generous.
Awesome professor. Great guy. Highly recommend.
nice guy, knows he's really smart and that can come across as a little arrogant in class sometimes, but it's an enjoyable lecture overall. He's a funny a guy and a pretty fair grader. Considering I hate history, this was not that bad.

Fun lectures, likes to teach the "interesting parts". Definitely worth taking for a medieval history class.
One of the most encouraging, helpful, and approachable professors I have ever had. He is really interested in getting to know students, so talk to him and go to office hours. Broad essay topics so prepare well.
Prof Zimmers is awesome. I generally hate history, but i loved this class (world hist II). He has so much energy and enthusiasm. He's really smart and his lectures are very clear. He's funny and engaging as well. I learned a ton. Definitely take him if you can.
Zimmers is the man - very cool guy and smart as hell. Grades first paper hard, but helps you out on the second one - fun discussion and lectures. He reminds me of Jim Rome the way he talks - can be a bit arrogant, but he does know everything he lectures on. Definitely take him for history
Class was pretty general and lectures were interesting but not enough to keep you from nodding off. I enjoyed Zimmers, he was pretty funny and made lectures as good as possible. Discussion sections were horrible though, I absoutely hated them. REALLY hard grader on papers nad exams, pretty hard to get an A or A-.
Zimmers grades papers very harshly. To do well on the midterm and final you must memorize detailed information of over 100 terms. Small recitations are mandatory and you are penalized if you don't particpate... he keeps track of how many times you speak. Although attendance in recitation is mandatory lectures are pointless and boring.
He's wonderful & engaging even in a subject that I don't like- makes jokes and brings in all sorts of pop culture, etc. so everyone can comment. Participation counts in his non-survey class- either make an effort or don't take the class. 1 warning- he's gorgeous, so careful not to spend so much time looking at him that you can't keep up and listen.
Seriously. Go to most lectures - get an idea of where he's going thematically. Go to Rec. b/c it's mandatory (and tracked), read a couple of the books, say something pithy once or twice, make detailed flash cards of the pruned down term list pr-exams. Do well on the papers (not hard). There's your A. Maybe you learn something along the way.
If you are interested in the Middle Ages or British history, take his class! He knows it all from 300 to 1900. Awesome lecturer, extremely helpful, really wants you to know it. Funny, personable guy and very easy on the eyes.
fall of rome - zimmers is the prof to take for anything related to the middle ages. he's energetic, down to earth, understands the college mindset, and makes class interesting. not an easy A necessarily, but he grades fairly. quintessential gtown prof: loves tombs, hates duke.
Zimmers is amazing! He knows a ton, and teaches clearly. He's always around if you want help. It's not an easy A, but with work As and A-s are possible, and at least you spend the class time smiling!
Zimmers is great. He's interesting, knowledgeable, laid back. You have to work hard to do well but he's not too harsh of a grader. Lectures and discussions can be interesting and he definitely knows his stuff!
Took his Crusade's class-really interesting. You dont have to do the reading. There is a short presentation for each person and a 15 page final paper. He is really young and nice. He went to Georgetown so he knows whats up. He knows when we are burned out and he lets us watch movies sometimes.
Smart, easy going, & ridiculously good-looking, I barely ever knew what was going on in classes b/c I was always so busy starring at him. Aside from myself he engages the class in interesting discussions & everyone loves him, assigns butt loads of reading tho?in any case, he?s great & did I mention really, really, really ridiculously good-looking?
Outstanding. One of my favorite professors of all time. Very tough, great teacher though and expects a lot from his students (that's a good thing, I promise). Really had to work hard to get an A. Definitely take his classes. I had two at once, and plan to take more.
Fantastic lecturer! Zimmers knows the material in and out and is concerned about the well-being of his students. It seems as though only after a couple weeks of class, he knew all 75 students names. He's not an easy grader, but he's a great professor.
Pros: knowledgeable and fun. Sense of humor. Accepts draft papers, and definitely willing to help you strengthen your papers. Cons: lectures move at light speed and not always well-organized.
Professor Zimmers' lectures are really interesting and fun. There are two papers, which aren't bad, and he will read drafts in advance. It is a lot of work to study for the midterm and the final, but in the end it's definitely worth it.
Loved this class, loved this professor. Tried to keep lecture entertaining, had great sense of humor, but really got the point across. Discussion sections were much better when he moderated than when the TA did. He also went to Georgetown for undergrad, which gives him an interesting perspective sometimes
Dr. Zimmers' wealth of knowledge is absolutely staggering, and his ability to get it across in his lectures extemporaneously is likewise amazing. He is one of the most critical teachers I've ever had as far as writing, but I am now a better writer. And yes, he is distressingly attractive. Hotness (1-10) is 9, Intellect (1-10) is 45.
Zimmers' the man. Very straightforward with his expectations. Engaging, funny lectures. Fair grader. Actually gets to know his students, even in large lectures. Terrible taste in movies though.
Professor Zimmers is awesome and his class should be the model for every other one at GU. You get as much as you want out the class and no pressure if u don't participate/ do all the readings. Zimmers gets that ur not guna spend hours on his class so he makes the class light and expectations are straight forward. Def take zimmers if you can!
One of the best professors at Georgetown! Incredibly engaging - lectures are funny, clear, supplemented with slideshows. Zimmers has an amazing memory and a zeal for teaching. He LOVES the subject, and is always willing to talk. Knows everyone in the class, and really challenges you! Plus, he is extremely good-looking
I love him!He is the best teacher in the world!
Zimmers is the best professor! He is funny, nice, and the material is very clear. History is something that can easily become a boring topic, but each class is fun and intriguing! There is a fair amount of reading, but definitely manageable as are the tests and papers. Only two papers, a midterm, and a final. I highly recommend!
Engaging lectures even though he rushed through them - it is hard to keep up. A lot of work and time. Be expected to read a 150-200 page book every week for discussion. Very hard essay grader. Midterm and Final consist of looking up and studying from 80 IDs + essay question, where you have to look up the who what where when why for - time consuming
Incredibly engaging professor. Knew and challenged every student in a massive lecture, and is clearly brilliant in his own right. I worked hard for my A, but it was well worth it.
One of top 3 professors at Georgetown if not the best. He will make you love history. He is really really amazing. Missing one of his classes is like missing an episode of 24. He will always include his own comments throughout the lecture that make you reflect beyond the textbook. Not easy grader, but getting an A is worthwhile your effort.
A generally nice guy with a good sense of humor, although he will call you out if you go too far. Requirements are fair, if sometimes a little vague. Grading is also fair, and neither easy nor prohibitively harsh.
Take history with Zimmers! He is the most amazing professor I have ever seen--extremely engaging and such a cool guy! You want to attend every class and even discussion sections that are led by him! Demands a lot, but you genuinely learn a great deal in his class.
Be ready to never want to hear the word "crucial" again, since Zimmers uses it to describe everything in the class. Otherwise, he covered many interesting topics and his lectures are clear and easy to follow. Exams are fair, but writing assignments are another matter. (They weren't even put on the syllabus.)
He is a great professor and really into his subject matter. Problem is he is very picky about how you write and has a tendency to be passive aggressive if he's mad about something, but you'd never know it by how he acts. It might have just been the class size of 60 but I did not enjoy his medieval history class too much
While he is an engaging lecturer, I was less impressed with his ability to communicate what he wanted of students. He also gave over the majority of discussion sections (already foolish in a class of 60) to the TA who unfortunately didn't know what he was doing. Papers are graded strictly. He made portions of medieval history interesting.
Very interesting Lecturer. Tries to make class fun and engaging. Midterm and final are both Terms and an Essay, plus 2 5-7 page essays throughout the class. Not the easiest grader but if you go to class you'll learn a lot.
Dr. Zimmers' lectures were interesting enough but far from fascinating. His selection of books to read was great though, and there weren't too many papers- only two. He also gives you a very clear picture of what's going to be on your exams, so that helps a lot. If you want a do-able history for a requirement, take him.
Great Professor, wish I could take him every semester
Best history professor I've had at Georgetown. Wish I'd found him earlier in my Gtown career. LOVE HIM. Workload is standard for a seminar, he's incredibly funny, manages to make 9:30 on Monday mornings a good time, the readings are actually fun for the most part, and I learned a ton. Good balance between lecture and class discussion. TAKE HIM.
I guess he was funny, but I thought his ego got in the way of that. Discussions were interesting and thought-provoking. Overall more difficult than it's worth for a req. - a book each week for discussion, IDs on tests that require knowing a wealth of info, and really harsh grading on papers. He also didn't give final papers back until the final.
Wonderful professor. Definitely a must-take for the requirement. He assigns books that stay with you, is very engaging. Challenging class, but totally worth it.
The stories he tells are amazing, but a portion of the class is participation in discussion over an entire book, every class. The papers are graded sharply and make up most of the grade. "Church of Reason" type. Felt discouraged with progressing afterward. Glad to have taken once, but would avoid again if at all possible.
Zimmers is brilliant. Despite the fact that it was a survey course, he made everything interesting and I had no problem following his lectures. I stopped reading the text halfway through because he relates the same information in class. Test format is great, you write 7/14 IDs and then some short essays. He's a bid harder on papers, though.
I took his Vikings class and really enjoyed it. There was a lot of reading (old Nordic sagas) but the discussions and lectures were interesting and he didn't need you to know family trees or anything. Tests were 7/14 IDS and short essays and there was a final term paper that he graded fairly. I loved his teaching and I'd totally take him again!
For a non-history or medieval studies major, not sure what I was thinking taking this class. It was very interesting, but the whole class grade is midterm(20%), huge research paper(40%), and final exam(40%). The readings were very long (sometimes 50-200 pages between T&TH).
I have no idea why I took this course. As a non medieval studies/classics major I was already at a huge disadvantage coming in, especially because I was a freshman. Zimmers gives a ton of reading and work, and the final covers so much material specifically that it is very difficult to keep up in the class. Good luck without prior knowledge.
I've had him before and this was a little different- he made the tests harder this year (didn't give review sheets) Same format though. Lots of readings (some difficult Old English). He's a great guy and takes charge - the TA was useless. Puts emphasis on dates, details as well as themes. If I hadn't had him before I would not have done as well.
This class was deceptively difficult. It's a survey history class about information of which most students have at least tangential knowledge. However, Professor Zimmers is a tough grader on papers and tests who expects you to memorize exact dates, which makes studying for his class tedious and interminable.
Zimmers was my favorite professor in the program. While the class was far from easy, he made the work interesting and was every engaging. I took him for as many classes as possible (3), and was glad i did. I learned a lot.
The class has two papers (about 5-8 pages) a midterm, and a final. The papers are expected to be high quality in both writing and information. He has very high expectations and you must work really hard to get above a B. His midterm and final are fair, but you have to learn a lot of information. It takes a lot of effort to do well.
Simmers has a brilliant mind, but he is extremely condescending and does not care about the students in his class. If you can take this course with someone else, do it. You have been warned.
Non-engaging lectures. Very conceited as a person. Cracks terrible jokes during his boring lecture. Thinks he is smarter than he actually is and does not care how you do in the class. Do not take if you do not have to. In terms of grading he is alright. I was lucky to have a nice TA but this class is a waste of time because of the Professor.
4 assignments; 2 Essays, 2 Quizzes. Alright do recommend you start memorizing the terms he gives out every week for lecture asap
Hands down, Zimmers teaches the best intro class at Georgetown. His lectures are phenomenal--made 50 minutes feel like 5! Although the weekly discussion readings are long, they lead to incredibly enriching discussions. This might be one of the few classes at Georgetown that changed my outlook on the world. I honestly hope I can take Zimmers again.
This was the greatest class I took freshman year! The classes were fascinating and Zimmers was an incredible speaker. He inspired me to become a history major. There is a good amount of reading for this class, but all of the books flow well with the lecture and discussion material. Would take it again if I had the chance!
The best professor!!!! Jokes are a ten, very engaging, understanding, literally the GOAT. Class was so interesting, lectures were long but lots of information. I literally cannot recommend this professor enough. :)
Zimmers is an amazing guy and very outgoing in his classes. I only rate this particular class so poorly because the readings are ridiculously long at times (i.e a full-fledged book a week at times) and the content becomes too abstract at points (studying trends more than specific events). Great guy, forgettable class.
Dean Zimmers gives some amazing lectures . While a lot of information in the lectures won't help you too much with the assessments (2 exams, 2 papers), they are super interesting and that's why i'd take the class again. Lots of reading, way too much, my advice is to skim and take lots of notes in discussions.
Zimmers' class was the highlight of my semester. His passion is contagious. I have to agree with other raters that the reading load was a bit ridiculous (especially during the pandemic). It seems like participation is king for Zimmers, so be sure to contribute in discussion sessions. Also, I wouldn't be discouraged by tough essay grading.
Professor Zimmers was an awesome experience for Intro to World History. His lectures are super interesting and really funny, and the way he organizes the class by themes really helps you internalize the major ideas. The grading by him and his TA was unnecessarily harsh at times, and feedback could be unclear, but overall, a great choice.
Amazing lectures. He likes to go on tangents though. Tough, but very fair. Definitely have to work in this class. Make sure to participate in discussions.
Definitely an interesting lecturer (class flies by), but somewhat unclear/tough grading on papers. Takes a long time to grade assignments. Allows 2 skips for discussion section. Tons of reading, usually 100+ pages/week.
Great personality, definitely tries to connect with students by joking around, but, he's an incredibly tough grader and his standards are incredibly unclear. For the midterm and final, we had to memorize who, what, where, when, historical significance for 80 terms per exam, only asks you to write down like 4. A lot of work, very little recognition.
The hardest class I've taken this semester by far, ridiculous amounts of reading (whole texts of like 300 pages for one 50-minute discussion), too much content covered for one course and unclear syllabus and structure of class. DO NOT take this class
One of the worst professors at Georgetown. I dreaded going to his course.
The absolute worst class at Georgetown. He expects you to read 8 full 300-500 page books over the semester in an intro core class (a book per week + all the readings he assigns). Grading is incredibly harsh on the two 6 page midterm papers on the books and on the midterm and final (you have to memorize who/what/when/where/why for 90+ terms each).
Early World Hist was a lot of information about seemingly irrelevant things (early history), but Zimmers is a very dynamic professor good at making early history relevant, so class is not too boring. Have to study a lot for the midterm and final exam
Can't believe other positive comments on here. This guy acts like he's down to earth and relatable, but expects you to memorize literally hundreds of early Norse figures for tests. His lectures are also incredibly unfocused. If you are not a history major, do not take any of his classes.
Most of the other reviews here are from freshmen. Don't trust them. This guy is so condescending to undergrads and thinks he's way smarter (and wittier) than he actually is. Has no sense of respect for students and seems to truly enjoy watching them struggle; I think it makes him feel better about being an expert in a field that no one cares about.
I completely regret taking this class. The professor is a cool guy or at least seems cool but his two tests are so difficult. There is a 12-15 page paper due right before the final which has 100 ids to memorize, an essay and random question from the readings. So difficult. Just don't take this class unless you want to die at the end.
Really nice guy and pretty interesting lectures, but extremely difficult final paper/test with INSANE expectations for written exam considering time given. TONS of reading, and lots of tangents in lecture that you have to know for the test. Take his class only if you're *really* interested in the topic. Not very accessible outside class.
He teaches his Crusades class very well. I enjoyed it, but he assigns a lot of work. He gives lots of freedom to investigate niche topics that students find interesting. Tough, but fair.
While challenging, Professor Zimmers's History-Legend in Medieval Britain class is nothing short of enjoyable. Each reading assignment corresponded to the lecture perfectly. His knowledge of sources and introduction of concepts always kept me engaged. He is super caring and wants to see you succeed. Absolutely take Professor Zimmers if you can.
The lectures aren't particularly interesting, he has a bad sense of humor and prioritizes being a dean over being a teacher. He did not return assignments on time, and only ever returned the midterm. final grades for the entire class did not change from what each person received on the midterm.
