great teacher, take her, a sweetheart and she lets you choose your own medium in almost all you projects, i did half my projects in spray paint and got an A. take her if you can
SHE IS AWESOME. She is so beautiful, and she has conviction. She will rip work off the wall that was cobbled together at the last minute and isn't afrai to criticise like every other teacher at the school.
Great teacher
Joseph is pretty demanding in terms of dedication to class projects; however, the freedom given to assignments is what makes this class so great. She lets you adapt assignments to your personal interest. I would recommend this teacher.
A splendidly kooky small english woman and truly excellent teacher. Very understanding and allows you to do what you like with projects. She expects you to do work however, and doesn't tolerate b.s. If you know what you like to do and like to do it with good, honest effort, Prof. Joseph is wonderful
Fantasticly eccentric and a wonderful professor. Not afraid to give constructive criticism, good or bad. Can tell if someone put their heart into a project or just slapped it together, and grades accordingly. Fun class.
I had the most fun in this class creating pieces that were fun to work with. Very little gouche work and a lot of freedom in projects.
Stephani is amazing and the gal can sure knock back a bottle of good wine. I loved her classes.
amazing woman. she honestly cares about her students and is very understanding. she cares more about the work that you produce than following guidelines and time constraints.
She always pushed me and showed me what true presentation was. Awesome teacher but very tough.
she's great about learning every student's strengths and weaknesses and pushing them to become better artists on an individual basis. lets students explore their expected majors in a way that related to the class, instead of the same old foundations projects. very open-minded to letting students try different things.

She individualizes the classes to make your talents shine. LOVE HER!
stefani ann joseph is amazing. i took a 9 am class just to have her as a teacher and it was worth it. it seems like class is going to be hard, but in general as long as you "learn something" from your projs, she'll like them. she makes color theory a lot more interesting than just painting swatches. everything you do relates back to your major.
If all teachers could be even a fraction as amazing as Stefani Joseph....well that would be a perfect world. She is a hilarious person, thorough with her critiques, willing to push her students, and has very open projects that you can incorporate your major into. She is fabulous!
Fantastic. She is everything a teacher should be. Challenging but forgiving. Professional and casual. Teaches fundamentals and encourages creativity on a tremendous scale. As a sound design major, I was dreading this class, but it turned out wonderful. I have nothing unkind to say, except that you must work hard, but good classes require that
Very good teacher. I like her mantra. "If its not portfolio worthy you have to ask youself, why did you do it?" Better than other color theory teachers who dont let you work within your major.
Great class, leaps and bounds better than the average color theory class. You only paint squares in class, so you might not come away with a greater understanding of mixing paint (which is just fine for the majority of majors here) but what you do come away with is an understanding of the applications of color in your major. Highly recommended.
As a film major I really wasn't looking forward to color theory. Professor Joseph makes it really worthwhile and fun. While learning about color you're allowed explore other mediums and majors in the projects. She's a nice person, so be respectful by being awake and ready to work in those early morning classes. I love her British accent!
Incredible teacher. The projects are VERY open so you can do whatever you want (any medium) which is great for all different majors. She is a very very fair grader and is extremely witty. I would highly recommend taking her if you can get in her class, as they fill up quickly. She is absolutely fantastic, a wonderful woman and teacher.
Most people dread taking color theory, but with prof. joesph, it was a blast and it was amazingly easy. she lets you work in your own major, instead of painting little tiny boxes. (you do some of that, but its in class) she likes it when you participate, and shes not afraid to be honest about your work. i wouldnt take this class with anyone else.
She's absolutely great!!! Everything everyone else said. At first the class can be very intimidating because the projects are demanding but she definitely earns your respect. Brutally honest but very funny. I feel like I've learned so much more than just color theory and my money was well spent.
At first I couldn't stand Joseph because she verbally ripped apart my first project, but then as the quarter progressed I grew to like her more and more because I knew her criticisms were fair, honest, and thought out. She comes off as very harsh and rude at first, but just level with her and be honest and she'll have immense respect for you.
Color Theory was a BLAST! We had such an amazing class and she is an amazing teacher. All the projects are related to your major and are experimental. She's so sweet but honest about your work and helps you improve. You learn a lot about color without even realizing it. I would recommend her to anyone! She was the best!
Lets you do projects relevant to your major. Witty, sharp, and intelligent. Great knowledge of the design world and the goods you'll need to succeed. Take her.
The woman is great! She is hard, and she is intimidating, and the expection of work is so EXTREMELY high in this class. She will tell you what she thinks, and that you need to redo it if needed, but it is all completely worth it! EVERY project you can do what you want, designed to your major and its all eye-candy to look at the work. AWESOME!
Joseph was the best teacher i had this quarter. She is the best example of what a teacher should be. Her discussions are very relevant, she strongly encourages major oriented work. She'll rip apart something that sucks.. but then tell you how to make it better. Very honest and straight forward. Very fun, good sense of humor. i want her again..
Great teacher. Allows students to complete projects in whatever media they will be dealing with in their field of study, rather than paint the whole time. Very happy I took this course with this professor!
Great teacher that has thorough critiques and really does exciting projects that are great for portfolio. Loved her honest feedback!!!I would highly recommend her for a teacher!Learned new medias such as PhotoShop and enjoyed it!
Stefani is awesome! Probably one of the best if not the best professors ive had at SCAD. I had her for color theory and loved that class. She is extremely clear in what she wants from you and is hilarious and honest and is a very sweet lady. Everytime I see her around Anderson Hall it makes me happy! She is great! Take her!
I had her for color theory.Best prefessor Ive had at SCAD.Get to explore your major and painting is kept to a minimum.Very nice, helpful, and funny.Only negative is that she has high expectations but this wasnt a problem for me because she gives you enough time to work on projects and you can use whatever media you like so it is usually enjoyable. A+
Probably the best color theory class due to being able to center the projects around your major. That said, beware of taking this class at the same time as an important major class. She is a bit self centered, and thinks that her class should be your top priority.
She really works hard to get you to do your best.
I had Prof. Joseph for Life Drawing, and it honestly made me a better artist. Her comments may seem harsh, but behind the harshness is a large load of wisdom. She can also be quite witty, and even lets you incorporate your major into your assignments!
She a tough and her comments will tear apart poorly done projects, but she is very very knowledgeable. I never expected to learn any where near as much as I would about Color Theory as I have. Recommend Taking her but be prepared.
I love this class. I have learned more about art in other fields, presentation, and art in the real world than i ever though i could in a foundations class. I work my butt off, but it's worth every second.
OMG. TAKE HER. Her class will be sooooo beneficial to you.
Great professor.
She is great! She gives clear directions and holds extra help sessions. There is some painting of squares and note taking during class, but this definitely helps you remember the info and assist in your projects. Projects are awesome b/c you have total freedom and can produce portfolio quality work related to your major. just don't slack off
My Best Professor at SCAD. I wish she taught classes in my major! She expects a lot out of her students, but if you work hard you will finish with some awesome portfolio pieces. Warning...if you put up a piece that is not professional/not finished be prepared for a harsh critique She WON'T tolerate poor work. TAKE HER CLASS. BEST PROFESSOR EVER!
Totally useless class. Easy A if that's what you're looking for, but homework was busy work and it drove me insane. Learned nothing. She'll either like your work or hate it, and if she hates it, she'll make fun of you. Just be prepared to defend your work and be confident because she enjoys speaking over students during critique. Take someone else.
Someone's a whiner (the comment below). That was not my (or the majority of students) experience with Prof. Joseph. Yes, the work is sheer hell and free time will become a thing of the past. However, if you put the effort into it you will feel very rewarded. She's not unfair, she just wants you to push yourself to be a better artist. Take her.
You'll either love her or hate her. Don't take her class while taking another heavy work load class and don't take her class if you hate painting with gouache. She's the only color theory prof. that allows you to do projects in your major medium which is nice. I feel like students in other classes learned more though. Easy A / B.
Strict, unless you are one of her favorites. Harsh, if you don't show your full potential. Professionalism, is her number one vocab. Average work is unacceptable. If you want to actually learn about COLOR, then I would suggest taking someone else. Because in Stefani's class, you will learn Presentation over Color Theory.
She doesn't hesitate to give students severe, mean comments based on her own taste. That often made me unpleasant...but at the same time, it pushed me to work harder. On most of the projects, you can do them however you want.
I love this woman.
Excellent teacher. Highly recommended.
Amazing for color! She will push you to do your absolute best and critiques are spot on. You have the freedom to do projects in your major. Keep up with the book and you'll be fine. Also: wikipedia her. She's a huge deal overseas and occasionally jets off to Paris for the weekend.
While she is a harsh grader, I absolutely love her classes. You get free range over your assignments, as long as you cover the basic criteria - demonstrating use of tints and shades, for example. If your project is not up to standard, she usually gives you a chance to fix and/or redo it. Her class definitely isn't for slackers.
She knows exactly what she is talking about and she teaches well She grades tough but it pushes you. She wont hesitate saying bad stuff about ur work but she will give u a chance to fix it if she feels u deserve it. If ur lazy dont take her because u wont last.u can use any material u want for the hw. If color is important for your major TAKE HER
LOVE HER. every project done in your major. Number one lesson I took from this class: PROFESSIONALISM. She stresses it very much. Make sure you have hours on end for projects.. She'll make herself your life. Literally 15-20 hours easily for projects. Great teacher though
best professor ever. knows her stuff. U will learn a lot about color and how to use it in ur major. She is hard but it pays off. You can do ur projects based on you major. As an animaiton student I made a bunch of animated shorts and learned so much! I recomend her to any one who is ready to work and wants to succeed. Best professor I have had!!!
This teacher is surprisingly hard for a foundation class, but you learn a whole lot! The best thing about the class is, as long as you fulfill the requirements of an assignment, you can basically do what you want. It's a really good class to learn about color theory as well as take a chance to work on one of your weaker mediums or try new things.
Amazing teacher. Will push and help you do the best you can do.
She's easy and cool
Smart, Helpful, Just be prepared to work hard and Don't skip classes.
Very strong color theorist professor. Classes will be harder for people who have not work with their major yet, but it is doable. She offers a few extra help classes.
Projects are great and you get a lot of freedom, but she still pushes you to do your best. Didn't learn too much about color theory, but I learned a lot about presentation (it's a huge priority with Joseph). If she doesn't like you, she can be mean during critiques, but her critiques are v. helpful. She def. had her favorites in class. Grades easy.
She'll definitely bite with cynical humor, but it's glorious, you just gotta step up to plate and pitch it back well or handle what you're given. She provides alot of freedom to her students- Joseph is very understanding, and wants colour theory to apply to your field of interest. Fun class no doubt, but you get what you put into it!
Took her for color theory, even though you don't learn much actual theory, it was a fun class. BUT I don't suggest to take her for figure drawing. She focuses more on created finished pieces of work for your portfolio rather than actually learning how to draw the human figure. All the homework is not very beneficial...
She is so awesome and helpful. She'll make you want to do the projects. She a sweet little British woman. Fabulous. Lets you do thing in your major. I'm film. It was great.
Ms. Joseph is the sweetest most personable teacher ever. Her motto is to not make class just sitting there and writing notes. There is a lot of freedom on the projects, and they are supposed to relate to your major. It is a lot of work, but she's a really easy grader. Students work hard for personal achievement rather than fear of a bad grade.
Absolutely fantastic! She takes a strong interest in individual people and their majors! I'm a non-visual major and passed color theory with flying colors! Please take her; as long as you do the work and show up on time, you'll do just fine!!
She is fantastic! She gives students so much freedom on projects and always lets you focus on your individual major. She is extremely fair and honest with you. You'll get used to the british humor!
She is brutally honest, and very helpful. She will definitely keep you busy with work. She unfortunately talks during student presentations which I feel is very unprofessional, and you don't learn anything that most art classes don't already cover in depth.
She's great. Very funny lady. Was everyone's favorite class that quarter. You really get to explore your major. Importance is placed more so on your development. If you actually try to do something with your projects you're bound to do well.
I gained no knowledge of color theory in this class which was rather surprising. While it was nice getting to chose our medium for projects I gained no skills in working with color. Also for someone who claims she is teaching us how to be professional she is extremely unprofessional during student presentations, interrupting to make useless comments
So I took Joseph for Color Theory and Life Drawing. You don't learn a lot about the specific subject she's teaching, but you do learn a lot about your own major. She really lets you explore it. But get ready for a lot of hard projects. You learn a lot, just make sure you're in class.
Joseph is an exemplary educator. Her class was challenging at times, but she allows students to do projects in their major and is always there to help. Her hilarious personality somehow makes having class at 8AM pleasant. She understands student's workload and budget. She is adorably british and gives great feedback. Generous with grades.
You will learn much more than just Colour Theory in this class. Highly recommended teacher for Colour Theory, but you should be ready to put some time into the projects for the class.
You learn more than just Colour Theory in the classes. The class is oriented to the students and she gives good feedback on assignments, but be ready to work on the projects in the class.
She's really great- encouraged me to skip one of my classes so I could participate in Global Game Jam, something which really pertained to my major (Game Design), and then gave me extra time on the current project! She's really great. Expects a lot from you though, and she's a hard grader at times. Just put a lot of effort in and you''l be fine!
Understanding professor. If you work hard she will notice. Classwork is easy and she makes note-taking extremely easy. Work hard on your project and she might turn out to be one of your favorite professors. Also she's a super sweet old British lady so 3 she's lovely
She gives projects related to your major. She is amazing in class and really gets into helping students to develop their skills in their majors.
Best class taken in Scad. She's major oriented, meaning she will let you do any project having to do with your major of study. I really enjoyed this. I would re-take if I could.
I LOVED this class. Professor Joseph challenged me more than I have ever been before, and expected so much out of me. Because of that I improved SO MUCH. She changed my assignments so that they related to my major, and during critiques, she would tell me in detail what was good, and what could be improved. She will challenge you, though.
Professor Joseph is amazing! I came in with no knowledge of what design really was, but she pushed me to better myself and my work. She takes notice if you try and hard and make improvements.
If you are an upperclassmen looking for a color theory class do not take this professor. Your time is better spend somewhere else, I promise you.
Assignments were major orientated so I have a ton of stuff for my portfolio now, even as a freshmen. As a European, she doesn't sugarcoat anything but she will challenge you to be better than you're best. I would recommend taking CMPA either before or in the same quarter as this class. Lots of work with lots of pay off.
Get on her good side, come on time, do whats expected or more and she'll be the sweetest lady. Expects professionalism. Can be a bit tough on her expectations but she's always willing to help out to fix things. Lots of work, but you get to choose what you want to do.
I love her! She is so nice and friendly and even today months after taking her class I feel comfortable coming up to her and saying hi. She's such a treat.
Your largely free to do what you'd like with your projects, and she favors orienting projects towards your major and color application in your career. I personally really enjoyed this. Gives good feedback, but if you're the first to go, beware, she will make an example out of you, good or bad. The main con is the expense of gouache you will need.
She doesn't explain a lot what you should do for homework, she just shows you some pictures and gives you a handout that doesn't have a lot of details showing how to do the assignment.
She's an amazing professor. She really wants her students to succeed and gives credit where credit is due. If you put in effort, she will be more than happy to give you the grade.
She is straightforward and anything that she doesn't like it well automatically be a terrible grade. she doesn't explain very clearly in the class and she just
Professor Joseph really wants to see her students succeed, and will grade based off of how hard you try rather than your skill level. She wants you to try new media and expects your craftsmanship to be as good as it can be. She makes the whole class critique the pieces while they are still in work and when they are finished.
By far THE BEST professor at scad, sign up for her! I lucked out and got her first semester freshman year for design. She definitely isn't afraid to give her opinion on your work during class critiques but does it in a way that is constructive while also giving you a positive. She is such a sweet and caring woman and you will learn so much from her
Her class is based on projects and critiques. Put a lot of time into your projects and even if it doesn't turn out great, you will understand how to redo it better during the in progress critique, as you see everyone elses work and notice the design elements she talks about. She only answers emails in her office hours.
Absolutely the best course I have ever taken - almost exclusively because of Professor Joseph. She's a tiny fiery ball of passion and sass. She makes sure you never have to do busy work and everything matters. She has high expectations, but because she wants you to really care about your work - and most of the time you do end up caring. A lot.
One of the more unprofessional teachers that I've had. Funny, since she places such emphasis on professionalism among students. Assignments seem like they were cooked up on the fly & have absolutely zero parameters. The final project doesn't even have any instructions at all, its up to you to figure out. When asked to clarify, gives no response.
She cares so much for her students. She is so professional and nice and makes everything personal. She pulled me and other students aside and asked us our majors and told us very important information regarding getting ahead in the field. She is fantastic. Must take her.
She's great. She really cares about her students and their futures. She doesn't let you leave a critique, or her class in general, without realizing how her class plays into your major. All of her feedback relates directly back to your major and your future so she can actually give you information that helps.
She is very open for the projects. She will give a few sets of guidelines and leave it up to interpretation. This is helpful because you can adjust projects to match your major. But this can be difficult if you aren't good at coming up with your own projects. No textbooks or quizzes or tests!
Prof. Joseph is an incredible professor! She cares about each individual student and will work with you to ensure that you are doing your best in her class. I would take her over and over again. She has lots of projects but helps you manage them time wise.
