I really enjoyed her class. There are no surprises on the test. The test questions come straight from the power point so simply study the power point and you should get an A in the class. Definitely take her for biochem instead of the other professors!
This was the most disorganized class I have ever taken. She was rude, test questions often did not align with the material presented in class, and I have never been more confused by any professor's lectures. The only reason I did well in this class is through the massive amount of time and effort I put in and a large curve. Extremely stressful.
Worst course I have ever taken. Professor Boyd seemingly improvises her lectures and shows a painfully obvious lack of familiarity with the content. She constantly insults your intelligence by pretending she has any idea what she's talking about, all the while expecting students to attend her lectures where she rambles nonsensically.
avoid at all costs
really good prof, she not only tells you exactly what parts of her powerpoints to learn for the exam, but she also records and uploads the material for later access. powerpoints are not super long and there are no surprises on the exam. wish i had her all semester instead of just half.
Dr. Boyd is a good professor that is passionate about what she teaches. She points out concepts that will be on the exam; helps tremendously when studying. Try to attend, take good notes during her class; this will help you focus on the info that you need to know, saving much time. Exams are straightforward; just focus on the lecture slides.
Dr. Boyd is one of my favorite professors at UTD. She has a great teaching style and personality. She is easily accessible in office hours, and cares about her students. The class is not easy, it does require to you to pay attention in class and study the slides. On tests, know the bigger picture really well.
Professor Boyd is great. There are 3 exams, 7 pop quizzes, and multiple opportunities for bonuses. She is a bit hard to reach outside of class- I'd just email her. Most exam materials come from lecture slides. This is a difficult class in general but prof body makes it bearable. I would take her if you need this class.
Dr. Boyd is my favorite professor at UTD so far. She has an exciting and easy-to-understand way of teaching. The exams are very straightforward and are basically the same things that Dr. Boyd has emphasized in class. I highly recommend her course; you won't regret it!
Wow. There is extra credit for Dr. Boyd's Bio 3361. Biochemistry is a combo of gen chem, ochem and biology. Study the slides (i.e. make vocab cards per sentence). Furthermore, after making these flashcards, we have to go about "understanding" the biochemistry subject. Then, one should be able to attain an "A". Dr. Boyd is definitely the best.
Literally would die for her. One of the best professors at UTD. Explains difficult concepts in a way that makes them easy to understand. Pop quizzes, but would warn us of them coming. Good amt of extra credit. Study those slides. Exams tend to go into deep detail about the lecture material. Thats it
Dr. Boyd is a super funny and friendly person who's clearly passionate about microbio. The course content was taught well but her exams were hard for me. Tested on very nitpicky details from the slides. Problem sets & final project were also graded harshly. She gives extra credit and a few points back that helped at the end though.
Biochem requires lots of studying, and exams are lecture-reliant. Dr. Boyd will emphasize certain lecture material to hint at it being on the exam. Exams are straightforward, as long as you REALLY study her slides. But Dr. Boyd as a professor is overrated. Lectures are energetic and fun, certainly, but she isn't a great teacher, nor very friendly.
We fell behind 5 lectures before exam 3, she compensated by talking faster and got frustrated if questions asked in class. Unorganized notes & key terms not defined. Hints at what is on exams otherwise 60% of her exams are a guessing game. Makes up for her LAZY teaching by giving ex cred points. AVOID if you're actually trying to learn Biochem.
Giving extra credits and leaking exam question does not make her a good lecturer. Her explanations to concepts can be confusion, but she will rush through it. It seems that she is not reading through the PPT, but she is certainly reading through her scripts. If you want to learn, i would not choose her.
After taking this class "I love me some biochem","you know what I am sayiiinnn". On a real note, straight forward class. Biochem is one of those courses where you just have to memorize stuff, and Dr. Boyd makes it fun. She is entertaining in lecture and provides vivid examples to complex subjects. To do well, just memorize the slide.
Dr. Boyd is very passionate about biochem and it shows. She gives examples that helped to clarify concepts. For tests, make flashcards about each sentence on the slide and review those until it's ingrained in your memory. If you really lock in during lectures and make an effort to understand the concepts, you'll do great in her class.
Incredibly rude and sarcastic. Does not care about her students at all.
Very unorganized. Read straight from the slides. Would NOT recommend at all.
A disorganized nightmare. From last-minute scantron demands to false promises of support, she clearly doesn't care about her students. Avoid if you value your sanity.
Has a very careless personality, and is exactly that careless about her class. Need to memorize everything off the slides for exams. Don't bother going to the professor for help, she doesn't care at all. Very rude and laughs sarcastically after she says something rude and condescending.
Make sure to memorize the slides to the detail and understand the overall picture as those were basically the tests. Dr. Boyd is a good professor overall, just make sure to study well.
Exam questions are extremely detail orientated, no drops on exams and sometimes curves are applied depending on class averages.
Worst professor I have ever taken. Mean and disorganized. AVOID HER
Attend every lecture, the class moves fast so it's hard to catch up if you miss anything. Dr. Boyd is super good at breaking down info so make sure to go to office hours if you ever need help. The class is pretty hard but you definitely get out what you put into it. I wouldn't take if you're not majoring in mol bio
take gavva. graded by 4/5 exams only which is ridiculous. one bad score and there goes your grade! you basically memorize to forget everything about this class.
She claims her exams are easy and then tries to trick you with every question. Not to mention, if she doesn't get through all HER lectures, she pushes it all towards the end while claiming that the class is on track. She seems to be lying half the time about the way grades are looking and is very inconsistent with the way she explains things.
Save your GPA and don't take her. this class is 4 credit hours and only graded by 4/5 exams? extremely unfair considering Gavva students have other things to help their grade. this prof gave extra credit but never told us when she was handing it out, whether it be the workshop section or during class. not to mention she also cussed out a student!!
If you arent that sensitive, she is hilarious and pretty sweet. Memorize the slides, but she is a proficient lecturer, and explains things that really simplify all the information - attendance is sometimes EC. Overall, a respected professor, just obviously dont talk during class and be disrespectful, and she is very accommodating
simply put, thank god this class is over with.
She doesn't deserve all the bad reviews, the class is just hard. If you don't understand something make sure to go to office hours as she explains things very well. Only annoying thing was that your grade depends on 4/5 exams. Make flashcards on every sentence in the slides and you'll be fine. Make sure you go to class or else you wont do well.
She has a fun teaching style and she is great to talk to in office hours. However, the course itself was painful.Grade only comes from 4/5 exams, and you have to know EVERY SENTENCE of the slides because she picks small details and finds ways to trick you. Workshop section was useless. Not the worst prof and class, but still hard. Appreciated the EC
People need to stop simping and hyping her up. Truly the most annoying prof ever, and this is someone who got an A+ in the class because I taught myself everything. Didn't even go to class. Added nothing valuable to my education. Waste of tuition money.
Take gavva if you want other things to back your grade up other than exams. This was a brutal course, and it being 4 credit hours will only tank your gpa if you do bad. Exams are fair game and she pulled the smallest details to be tested on. Memorize the slides front and back if you wanna do well.
Very mid class. Only 10 extra credit points added to the 4/5 exams (not on your overall grade, gets averaged with the exams) and you'll only get those points if you go to every lecture and workshop section because she doesn't tell you when she's handing it out. Didn't even help me in the end.
Very rude and disorganized professor. We were always left guessing towards the end what chapters our exam was going to cover. Went to ask what I could do to perform better on the next exams and I told her my studying habits, and she said that I'm already doing enough and to keep practicing more. Like what kind of advice is that?
Just memorize everything on the slides. Like every single sentence by heart.
you literally won't know what your grade is in the class because she doesn't post a grade scale until the end of the semester. it's a guessing game with what your grade is.
In previous semesters the class was given a 20% homework buffer making their grades much higher this semester she took that away and made our grade 100% exam grades even though she offered extra credit it was in no way comparison to the 20 percent all the previous classes got. On top of that there was barely a curve.
Should have taken gavva
Your grade is only based on four exams. Each exam covers about 150-200 lecture slides. You must memorize every single word on each lecture slide for the exam. Her multiple choice exams test you on trivial words from her lecture slides. Boyd clearly doesn't want you to learn and apply biochem, she just wants you to be familiar with every sentence.
genuinely what do people see in this professor? I studied day and night for this class just to barely get an A. I went to class and came out with NOTHING. she emphasized so many topics just to not even test us on it. she's literally Dieckmann 2.0. whoever says to take her is praying on ur downfall.
Her teaching isn't about learning or understanding; it's about memorizing tiny, irrelevant details from 200-slide lectures. Your entire grade is based on 4 exams, full of trick questions and pointless specifics. Overemphasized topics never appear on the test. Don't waste your time.
never seen so many simps for a prof that isn't even good. y'all are on a different level of delulu I want what y'all are on. want the simple answer you're looking for from all of these reviews? DON'T TAKE HER!! NEXTTTT
4/5 exams make up your entire grade, and then you get 10 points extra credit ONLY if you go to workshop and class ALL THE TIME bc she'll never tell u when she's handing it out. tell me why I got the full 10 points but it literally did NOTHING to help my grade. thanks for nothing!!
for those of you who thought gen chem 2 was hard, y'all are seriously in for a rude awakening. sure the exams are MCQ, but the way she formats the exams are meant to trip you up if you don't have every detail memorized down to the T. why did i have to study for this class like it was my full time job. shouldn't be this way if she was a good prof.
the way 23 reviews were written for her this semester alone is so funny to me. y'all can stop glazing her for that rec letter babes class is over!!! PLEASE DON'T TAKE HER PLEASEEEEE
To the person who said “just read the slides a few times” is a slap to those who worked tirelessly, reviewed slides repeatedly, and still didn't get the grade they wanted. If it were that easy, everyone would've gotten an A. Her exams aren't about understanding—they're about memorizing obscure details, which isn't real learning.
there's absolutely no way that we were her "best performing class ever" and yet there are this many bad reviews about her.... the math ain't mathing. just don't.
This class is memorization and not about understanding the material. You're going to have to memorize every sentence from her lengthy lectures to be able to do well on the exams. Even then, she tries to trick you and second guess yourself on her awful exams. Do yourself a favor and take gavva so you can cheat since the exams are online.
It's not fair that in previous semesters they were given 20% homework grade that provided a huge buffer even if she brings it back it's unfair to students who were in her class this semester. I hope she can read these and understand the issue with it she's not a bad person at all and the people saying bad stuff about her character should not be
This class requires A LOT of studying because there's so much content, but if you study well the exams should be a piece of cake. It's literally straight from the slides. The hard part is studying because there's an overwhelming amount of content, but the exams were much easier than gen chem and bio exams IMO. I really wish she taught biochem 2.
Dr. Boyd was a great lecturer and was very knowledgeable about the content. That being said, her slides were pretty specific and her exams covered pretty much everything on the slides. No math. It was a lot of info to memorize, but try to make sense of things in order to retain the knowledge. Biochemistry is just a very memorization-heavy subject.
great teacher! she is very engaging gives interest lectures that she's passionate about. the exams are difficult because you need to know the slides backwards and forwards. however, you do learn the material, and you do not need any other information from books or other resources. she's also, very nice and approachable!
I never learned the material because their was no point, the whole class was fast paced and test heavy( she stopped doing a curve and homework assignment). The only way to do well in this class is to memorize her slides WORD BY WORD. I can say with confidence idk Biochem and the only reason I got a good grades was because I memorized her slides
It's a hard upper level course and obviously work needs to be put in. Biochem is mainly memorization. Go to office hours after exams because Dr. Boyd will explain where you went wrong in the thought process and how to approach it next time. She provides good explanations in terms of the why. There is extra credit and study 3-4 days in advance!
Dr. Boyd's lecturing style is structured, and she emphasizes key points—if she stresses something, it's likely on the exam. Her tests are from her lecture slides, so memorizing details, diagrams, and pictures is key. There's little leeway as 4 tests determine the grade. Attend class, stay on top of material, and review 4–5 days before to do well!
To her credit, she does cover all of the slides in class and covers the info. Exams ask ultra-specific questions from the slides. She will highlight certain things on slides and then ask questions about nonhighlighted things on the same slide. Seemed like she was trying to trick you into a bad grade, rather than help you into a good one.
Don't listen to people saying to study 4 days in advance. There's way too much to memorize in detail for those tricky exam questions. Study every chance you get. If you struggle on the first few exams, consider dropping. A 4-credit class can seriously tank your GPA, so don't risk it.
The questions are designed to make you second-guess yourself, and if you don't know the material well, you're done for.
Honestly, I'll say the quiet part out loud that removing the 20% homework grade other semesters had is unfair for our class. Our entire grade was 4/5 exams with some EC. Her tests are from slides and you need to memorize every detail. I'm sure this was better before but making the entire grade exams was just too much for me and most people I know.
Graded on purely 4/5 exams that are meant to trip you up and second guess your answers. What she says in lecture contradicts what she puts on her exams. I like the subject, but she makes memorization questions from one line of 200+ slides, negating the studying you put in. She loves those who do well, but puts down those struggling
this class was no joke. to be honest, I was expecting this class to be like taking bio 1/2 since it was just memorization of pathways and whatnot, but the way she formatted exams made it so much harder than that. exams were WAY too detailed. she's basically asking you "on slide 48, whats the third sentence of the second paragraph" T_T
The worst part about this class is that you are not encouraged to understand and learn the subject. You are forced to rote-memorize every single line of her slides, and even then, you will be asked a very, VERY specific question on a topic that was covered for barely one moment in the lecture. This is unbelievably unfair and horrible teaching.
Terrible class with a terrible professor. Grade is based solely on exams that require you to memorize hundreds of detail packed slides. Waste of time and money
Dr. Boyd is really amazing! TAKE HER! She really wants you to succeed and will work with you + is nice I know the grade is based on the exams and it is basically memorizing the slides, but it is better this way. When I took it a year ago we had problem sets which were not helpful and took away from study time. More exams = less content to memorize.
Dr. Boyd is the best professor at UTD. She teaches in such a way where you are able to understand the material really well. She is also so funny and so caring. She is such a good teacher and I would take her anyway!!
wish I listened to the reviews from the previous semester because honestly it seems like she got worse. she keeps pushing back content and exams to where it all piles up. most unorganized professor I've ever had.
Don't let A+ here convince you to take Boyd. Biochem isn't and shouldn't be an easy class, but her grading style is "oops gotcha." She (knowingly or not) treats the class like premed "trial by fire" and is fine with some "falling off the bus" if the average is 75. I want to be an instructor in chem, but I fr think this style needs to be discarded.
Dr. Boyd was an amazing professor. One of the best premed professors at UTD. She is very caring about her student, and very easy to talk to! Highly recommend taking her.
I loved Dr.Boyd she was a great lecturer and her slides are very concise, some people may say her class is hard but I would disagree compared to other upper level science classes, of course you have to study to succeed, I recommend not getting behind on the material because it will pile up. Know to concept, study and you'll succeed
Dr. Boyd is an amazing and kind professor. She truly cares and listens to her students. Biochem is a difficult class, and she hints at things that she may include on exams in class, so make sure to attend. Some extra credit is given and is worth 10 points, but grades depend solely on exams.
Dr. Boyd is a biochemistry researcher and is an expert on the subject matter. This class is intended to be difficult, but she makes it easy by giving you plenty of help through her TAs, SI, and office hours. I earned a 526 on the MCAT and I attribute this to her class. The class ends with med-school pace but she gives extra credit. Highly recommend.
Dr. Boyd is amazing as a lecturer and does her best to help you remember the material. I do personally wish there weren't any trick exam questions, but that's really my only gripe. She's accessible outside class and always offers kind words of encouragement. This class is memorization heavy due to the amount of information packed into the course.
Where do I start, this professor is bipolar. I don't know what altered in her brain from Fall 2024 to Spring 2025. I knew I didn't like her much when in the first class she mentioned all her reviews, reddit's and everything you hear about her don't look at… emotional much? She's inconsistent and lazy. Don't take this professor tbh worst prof at UTD
Every test has infinite number of lectures and lack ec, refuses to give them to her students and her TAs this semester were awful. They claimed to have little to communication with her, which is so odd since that's their role. From former students she was good but now not the best. Honestly worst professor at UTD. She can go kick rocks respectfully
I took Dr. Boyd because everyone told me she was the best professor to take for biochem and I now realize how wrong that was. I'm not sure what happened to her but apparently she used to be a really great professor and I'm didn't see that this semester. I wish I took Dr. Gavva since her students had take home exams. Don't take boyd for biochem.
A lot of this class is just memorization with some conceptual questions on exams, so not everything is word for word off the slides. Dr Boyd is a nice person and good lecturer but I wish the guidelines/test dates were clear from the start. Overall, not bad. Exams have a lot of content but not overly specific like others say.
I loved Dr. Boyd. While her exams were challenging, there were absolutely no surprises whatsoever. Anything in her lectures is fair game on exams and this really prepares you for graduate school. Dr. Boyd was a great lecturer and made studying simple because she tells you what to focus on. Attendance wasn't mandatory but you won't pass if you skip.
I did overall very well in the class and even though I had to mentally prepare and torture myself to understand the material, and I received an A in the class. She's very understanding and she helped me a lot to understand my mistakes. Overall, I loved her class :)
Most unorganized professor ever...terrible syllabus that doesn't say grade distribution or exam dates. Randomly says when the exam will be a week before. No good way to study except to memorize all the slides. She will emphasize something but then it's only 1 exam question. But some good things is that she's funny and has little to no math question
Pros: she's pretty funny Cons: syllabus doesn't include exam dates, topics, or grading scale, and the info that is on it is super vague. When you ask for clarification, she gives each person a different answer. You never know what's due/when it's due/what it covers till a couple days before. FIVE exams, each one extremely dense, detailed, and hard
The lecture materials are very disorganized. For each exam, she would go back and forth between a bunch of slideshows and then not tell us which ones we were going to be tested on. I remember for the first couple exams, she posted like 12 slideshows (there should've only been 3 or 4) and told each student to study a different set.
She doesn't make decisions on things, just goes by what she feels. Whatever you ask her, her answer is “maybe/prob not/we'll see”. It's super inconsiderate. We literally never have any idea what's going on. If you read our discord, twice a week there's a convo about something shes been super vague about & is telling people different things about.
Worst professor I've ever had. So unclear about grading and exams. Impossible to study for, you just have got memorize every single slide and hope for the best. She tells students different things about grades and gets mad when you ask questions. Also doesn't tell you about your exam until a week before, she includes no dates on the syllabus. Run!
Incredibly disorganized. Never gave a clear syllabus- exam dates had to be guessed. Grade is from 5 exams + 2-3 useless hw we paid $150 to access (to "cushion" our grade, added 0 value). Lecture slides were terrible- all over the place and hard to follow, but all fair game for exams. She's nice, but that doesn't excuse a class run this poorly.
I'm typically an A student. This semester alone, I got a perfect 100 for courses way harder than this one. Yet I got a D- for this course. Her exams are not testing you on knowledge. It's all "gotcha" moments. Impossible! HW counts for 3 percent of your grade (pay $150). Don't bother attending lectures, unrelated. Go to UT Arlington rather.
Shes a nice person and funny. A little unorganized and doesn't let you know when an exam is until the week before. 5 exams and one gets dropped. Everything on exam is from slides so have to memorize the slides WORD for WORD. Had to buy a $150+ dollar textbook that was barely used for grades or learning so DIDNT like that as broke college student
where in the world do i start…. this lady is not a good professor she's actually maybe the worst professor ever had. matter a fact in my whole academic career and i'm about to graduate. she's inconsistent, take her anger out on students, petty, and playa favors. she hates been questioned and hates communicating with her TAs & hates emails… -45/10
Exams are fine - info always comes right off slides/lecture, just requires memorization. Extra credit at end gives a nice boost. Completely doable class, especially if you know some biochem from MCAT studying. The syllabus does lack structure - exams are announced a week in advance and there's no clear grading scale until the end of the semester.
Better than Gavva by miles.. Other than that, her lectures are really good and entertaining. She clearly loves Biochem and everything to do with it. Unfortunately, her tests kind of suck, and the questions are really just slide-memorization checks rather than actually testing knowledge. You have to pay $150 for the priveledge of doing your homework
As a straight A student let me tell you this class is not easily doable. Yes exams are from the slides but 1)there are 200+ slides for each exam 2)you get a week's notice max 3)the slides themselves are disorganized & skip around between concepts. You will need to dedicate at least 4 hr/day to this class. Meanwhile my friends w gavva had a breeze.
This is by far the worst STEM professor I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. The syllabus lacked basic info and had incorrect extra credit %, confusing everyone all semester. She dodged simple questions, changed exam drop rules after the fact, was late to office hours, yelled at the class, and doesn't allow makeup exams if you get sick.
I disagree with the negative reviews. The class is very straightforward. Slides are provided for each chapter—start memorizing them from day one. Biochem isn't something to procrastinate on, so a one-week exam notice is not that bad. She's an excellent lecturer, gives hints on exam questions in class, and offers generous extra credit.
Previous reviews are correct in that Dr. Boyd is fairly unclear and lacking in communication about the outdated syllabus with obscured grading criteria. That being said, this class is easily doable despite being memorization heavy. Our (F25) class ended with a flat +8 point curve, although 5 points of which came through a mandatory $150+ textbook.
I don't any issue with Dr. Boyd's syllabus, exam scheduling, or attitude. The reason for my rating is the poor organization and lackluster teaching. Boyd's lectures involved reading directly from her slides and rephrasing the bullet points rather than providing any meaningful explanations or commentary.
Dr. Boyd is an extremely average prof. Her lectures can be disorganized, syllabus is unclear and subject to lots of change and her exams are pretty hard and require a good amount of studying. That being said, she is accesible outside of class and offers extra credit throughout the semester.
Never in my life have I had a like this and I never hope to have one again. Doesn't know her TAs, doesn't know her grading scale, doesn't know her test dates, doesn't know the syllabus. This would've been a great class had it been more structured. Good lecturer, bad professor. I would recommend staying far, far away. Take Gavva, save your GPA.
