The tests are so hard! Everything she teaches in lecture is never on the review assignments or on the tests. Every week there's a review assignment and all the answers are online.
Professor Sit's enthusiasm for geophysics is contagious. Her teaching methods differ from those of most professors but they're effective nonetheless. The work load was a bit much but it is a 400 level class after all. I highly recommend taking a class with Professor Sit.
Really nice woman, makes a boring class somewhat interesting... Didn't read the book, just did the review assignments and listened in class and had a high A because of the curves... Anyone who does poorly and complains about her must not have paid any attention- she's one of the better teachers out there.
Professor Sit is a great teacher. She is really passionate and seems to always enjoy herself while lecturing. She is an extremely fair grader and gives you plenty of warning about what will be on the test. If you are willing to put in any work at all and attend class there is no reason you shouldn't get an a. Labs can be tedious.
She's a great teacher! very passionate and nice lady. Cares about students and gets to know them by name. Very heavy workload involving labs, prelabs, and review assignments. Mostly skips slides, just says the important parts. Interactive class, gives worksheets to guide in learning process. Gives clicker questions. Tests are on the tough side.
Professor Sit is an amazing teacher who really tries to get to know the students that she teaches. Her class is one that is very workload heavy, and you can expect a lot of online assignment, but you have a week before any of them are due so you have time do them. A major gripe I had with her is that she answers a lot of questions with maybe.
Professor Sit is so sweet. She is very understanding and her class is not hard at all. If you do all the work on time it will be an easy A. At the end of the semester they drop your lowest score from each section (like labs, review, quizzes, etc..) So its not a hard class. Just pay attention and take notes.
Sit is very understanding, she has a great attitude and loves science. The material is a bit heavy but she will help you pass, if you need any help she responds to emails quick.
Professor Sit is actually adorable. She was super smiley and friendly and it made for a comfortable class environment. There is one mandatory field trip, but it's actually pretty fun. Great class!
Professor Sit is fun and caring. She goes out of her way to interact with students and make the class go by as easily as possible. The material is super easy, you really don't have to come to class although I recommend it because it's fun. Be ready to memorize minerals and rocks in the labs. There is a mandatory field trip on a Saturday. Great Prof
She is fun and really cares about her students. Even though she can give a ton of reading we still have fun in class. She makes sure her students pass and is a very understanding person. There is a mandatory field trip but it actually is kinda fun. Remember to participate!
Ms. Sit is such a passionate and devoted educator. She loves the field she is teaching, you can tell by the energy she brings to class everyday. She is devoted to help each student understand the classroom material. If you are struggling on a assignment or a lab she will meet with you and help you do it. I highly recommend her.
Professor Sit is an interactive lecturer. She encourages think-pair-share and knows most of the students by name. It is relatively hard to get less than a B in this course due to the multiple opportunities to get your grade up. If you show up to lecture (iclicker is graded), lab, and turn in everything completed and on time you are guaranteed a B.
She was a decent professor. She had a really bubbly personality that didn't seem to suit a college course and would get a bit annoying. She also knew a few students by names and would call on people which would make them uncomfortable. There was definitely opportunities for extra credit but overall the class is difficult for a gen ed.
Professor Sit was very engaging and put major emphasis on active learning. This translated into classes being very Socratic based with questions and discussions. Many assignments are online ,which is convenient, all offer immediate feedback. Professor Sit was kind, understanding, and a great lecturer who tried her best to help struggling students
Professor Sit is a wonderful teacher. I learned that she is very caring and makes sure that everyone passes. She also spends a lot of time getting to learn the names of students, and she even interacts with students outside of class. She offers many choices to redeem your grade if you fall off, and she is very understanding of your situation.
She is always ready to help a student and clearly as a passion for her field. She is well-respected and last semester she even had students from previous years show up. She is caring and understands the needs of her students. She also is care-free and tries her best to boost morale and decrease stress levels of her students.
Professor Sit would take time out of her schedule to help students if they are struggling with class work. She wants to make sure that everyone is having fun and is enjoying the class. Would definitely recommend her to other students.
Professor Sit offers many opportunities to students through iclickers. She is really understanding and is willing to help students when they are struggling. There is also a mandatory field trip that you need to attend. Overall, it is a fun class and I loved the field trip.
Professors Sit is the most woman I have ever seen. Words cannot describe her passion for her students. I hope one day she will be the director of her field, I hope even more that she aspires to continue being the best she can be. The 3 months I spent in the class with her have gave me an impression lasting longer than eternity.
This professor is sooooo good!! I sometimes wished that I was an EaES major just to take her classes. Truly an inspiration to us millenials.
take this class. great teacher and really shows a passion for eaes. always ready to help
Awesome teacher! Would take again just for the professor. Is genuinely interested about students outside of class 2.
She is ALL about participation! If you need help just go to her office hours. She is always ready to help and her personality is so bubbly. Best EAES professor around!
I loved this class to death. Never missed a day! Professor Sit is by far the best professor I have ever had. Even though I am dropping out of college, I will leave knowing I have gained something out of my experience. God Bless Stefany Sit! Carpe Diem
Even though I have a 190IQ, I found this class intellectually stimulating for a 100 level class.
Great professor. Sincerely wants everyone to pass. Is very participation heavy and enjoys calling on random students. Very bubbly personality and loves what she teaches.
Her sense of humor may be awkward but it helps me remember so many more things. One of the most adorable and bubbly professors ever. She also offers a lot of easy extra credit assignments and is always ready to help outside of class.
:D Best ever. Cool. Chic. Charismatic
One of the most amazing professors I've ever had! Her course is not difficult as long as you do the work and her lectures are very enjoyable and informative. You'll actually learn something! She's also very caring and makes everyone feel great about being in class. Super friendly professor! I definitely recommend her.
Tries her best to make lectures entertaining. Really nice gal, you can tell she wants everyone to learn and pass.
One of the most genuine teachers I have ever had. She goes out of her way to make students feel good about themselves and their work. She does everything she can to help students in and outside of class. She always manages to keep things positive and welcomes anyone to her class.
Professor Sit is the Michael Jordan of teaching. Outstanding performance and presence in lectures.
Easiest class I have ever taken. Professor Sit is super engaging and cares about her students. The material is easy and you can learn everything from lectures.
Her lectures are amazing. She is a really nice person and always ready to talk to outside of class. It is always clear when her office hours are and if she will be gone for something. Very well thought out class and solid schedule.
Great teacher who makes class interesting and was a great clinical instructor. I would want to be in her clinical group any chance I got.
I can see why all the past reviews are usually 5 star ratings! One and a half months into the school year and love this class!!!!!!!
You have to attend lecture or you lose participation points. You will have homework every week based on the lecture and also labs because they are long. You have to know what's going on or you will be lost. For a level 100 class there is a lot of work so, don't think you can slack off in this class. You have to learn the material yourself.
You have a review assignment, a prelab assignment, and a lab report due every week. If you don't buy the book but you have to go to lecture. Her attendance is based on iclicker questions. There's a mandatory field trip which if you don't go to you don't pass the class. If you're not into geology then this class will be extremely boring
This class has a lot of work for 100 level course. Should change it to eaes 333
Attendance sort of mandatory - better to go to understand what the lectures are about. I got lucky this semester because of the strike and didn't have to go on the mandatory field trip (really hard). Overall, she is very sweet and understanding. You have pre-lab due 8 am the day of your lecture and reviews due mondays at 8 am.
I really didn't like the class. She posts powerpoints after every lecture. We have review assignments due on 8 am on Monday, and sometimes, she uploads the powerpoints necessary for the review after the review assignment is due. SMH. a lot work too
Regret taking this class. More work than i expected. She pushes you to try harder.
Took her class last year, and I was really stressed in class. In fact, I gained 10 lbs because of it. She gives you more work than necessary
Really glad I took her during spring 2019 since it was the semester that the tas striked. Because of this, she decided to make the field trip optional. For the field trip, you were supposed to go to this forest and observe rocks for the whole day. Thank heavens it wasn't mandatory. Sit teaches in a monotone and makes you strive for the grade.
posts powerpoints after lecture, often times late. attendance mandatory and recorded through iClicker (which is based on accuracy of answers). review assignments, pre-lab assignments, and labs due every week. labs are long and boring, kind of hard also. mandatory fieldtrip to starved rock takes up an entire saturday. fieldtrip report is worth 10%
Started strong early in the semester, typical subjects of an Earth Science class. Her lectures got strange, she started wasting time constantly. She spent one of our ENTIRE class periods condescendingly "teaching" us what cheating is. She consistently wastes our time asking redundant questions and chatting about inapplicable subjects with students.
Probably one of the worst professors i have taken. There are lots of homework, and she posts powerpoints necessary for review assignments after they are due. She makes you work for the grade. Absolutely disliked this class.
She has the potential to be a good professor but the class took a nosedive after the first month. Gets too personal with students and makes things awkward. Gives really vague figures for exam short answers. MUCH HARDER than EAES 101!! Field trip lab report is extremely difficult. Do NOT take for science gen ed - far too much work and difficulty.
Attendance is based on accuracy of iclicker questions which most of the times are about things we have just mentioned in class without analyzing. I dont know how she expects students to get those iclicker questions right. Other than that shes a professor who makes students actually think critically although she doesnt always do it effectively
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She may look nice, but she requires much more homework than all of my classes combined. As many people have mentioned, she always posts the powerpoints late, frequently after assignments are due. The labs are super long and can be very difficult. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HER.
I don't know what to say other than she was an intense and sometimes, a pushy professor. She increases the amount of work you to to challenge yourself. I'm not allowed to curse on this, but simply put, absolutely won't and will never take her again.
Stefany Sit was an amazing instructor. If you have the chance to take a class of hers I would highly recommend :)
Professor Sit was super cool. She had very good lecture recordings and the test were what you learned in class. Only reason I got a B was because of lab. Lab is not that hard but they are very tedious. Stay on top of deadlines and you will be good. Very interesting class too you wont get bored.
This professor made this course so hard for no reason, especially during a pandemic. She didn't care that some of us have jobs or a LIFE outside of school and she gave so much unnecessary work and assignments that weren't relevant to the course material. The labs were hard and didn't match the material covered in class too. Don't recommend her.
Just simply do not take any class with this professor. I don't know why Sit believes it is necessary to assign so much homework for her students. I also do not understand why she averages your scores of the review assignments instead of taking your highest score. Just terrible.
Prof Sit , and her dog, are awesome! Her lectures are very informative and she makes sure you really understand the things you learn in class. However, this course requires understanding A LOT of information and it can easily become overwhelming.
There is a lot of work for this class, so if you're just trying to fulfill a gen-ed, you might want to take 101. However, Professor Sit is very nice and on top of grading. The lectures are clear and sometimes her dog shows up on camera. She will drop multiple of your lowest scores.
Either she is oblivious to how much work she is assigning for an intro level course, or she enjoys giving students an unnecessary amount of useless homework each week. She was nice as a person and clearly put in a lot of effort into the class, but what ruins it is assigning an insane amount of hw for an intro elective. Avoid her if you can
Professor SIt is a great professor and an even better person! She is caring, flexible, and understanding, a refreshing change from other Professors. The mood is always bright around her and it creates a great learning environment. The course does require work, but it's really not all that bad... I think people make the workload seem more than it is
I decided to take this class despite what people said about homework. I was wrong smh. 3 quizzes each week, labs every week, tests, projects and she expects you to devote 12 hours on this class for each week despite the fact we have other classes, jobs, etc. Wayyy to much for an intro level course.
A ridiculous amount of work for an intro course. This class took up more time than my major classes. 3 quizzes a week, readings, lab notes and write-ups every week, difficult iClicker quizzes every single class (I lost so many points on these), & presentations. Very tough grader too, I put so much effort in and it still felt impossible to do well.
If you are thinking about taking EAES 111 then dont take it with her. Though she's a very nice person but is a very tough grader and assigns a lot of work as if all of us are earth science majors. This class takes up more time than my major classes and requires way more effort than it should.
Took EAES 111 online and as part of my EAES major. She is very friendly and her lectures are straightforward for the most part. There is lots of work due each week but it's expected as part of my major. Lab was also not too difficult. She is very passionate about environmental sciences. I think she is a great professor overall.
Nice professor and good lectures. I don't know why people are saying she gives a lot of work because it takes around one hour a week to do everything. Other than that, show up to class and you should be fine.
Light coursework and easy class. Important to attend lectures to complete lecture assignments. The teacher is nice and learns student names. A good class to take to complete science prerequisite. Great class if you want to learn about rocks. If you attend the lecture you will be able to get a good grade.
Professor Sit is great! Lectures can get boring at times but the course is overall easy. There are blackboard check-ins after every lecture that help you review for the quizzes with are usually every other Friday. 3 portfolios that are usually pretty easy just time-consuming. Overall great course and a great professor.
She recommends getting the book, but it is really unneeded. Try to pay attention in lectures and keep up with the weekly assignments because they impact your grade more than you think.
She's ok, expects a lot out of you
Attendance is mandatory but is a small fraction of your actual grade. She says you need a textbook, but I never used one and passed perfectly fine. She's a decent teacher but talks to her students like a kindergarten teacher. Overall, the work isn't a lot if you don't procrastinate. Tests are relatively easy and the labs are INCREDIBLY easy.
Not very helpful nor supportive
I loved Prof. Sit! Her lectures are super easy to understand and she is really good at answering questions. She says to get the textbook but I didn't and did just fine cause her lectures are very informative. My TA was great as well and the labs are easy if you pay attention to the TA. There aren't lab write ups so it's mostly participation.
Professor Sit speaks to her students as if they're in preschool but I find it relaxing. Her lectures are easy to understand. There was a short, multiple choice quiz for each lecture, each allowing three attempts. If you attend lecture, these are easy. She makes an effort to learn everyone's name, making the class more welcoming and enjoyable.
This class is way more harder than it needs to be. The professor puts so much effort but with heavy lecture and long labs it feels like you are taking two courses but in reality it is just one course. I do not recommend this course because it was literally harder than calculus for me.
The worst professor ever!!! Avoid this class at all cost.
Completely over the top with homework and since its a lab course, it feels like taking two courses at once.
She is very kind and wants people to participate in class. She will call on you even if you are not raising your hand if she knows your name, so if you go to office hours prepare to participate in class. The material is very simple, you can either take an exam or do a presentation and it's so easy to fulfill the guidelines.
This professor treats her students like they're in kindergarten. Not accommodating. Says they won't put certain topics on the test because it wasn't covered in class but still includes it on the test. Picky grader. Takes way too long to cover material (30 slides for the day but will only get through maybe half of them). Wouldn't recommend.
This professor treated us as if we were middle school students and focused only on select students whose names she could remember. Although I took this course for credit, the workload was very heavy, but the materials covered were quite straightforward. Additionally, she made simple topics unnecessarily difficult to understand.
Easily the sweetest and kindest professor I've met at UIC so far. If you actively listen and collaborate in lectures, you should be able to get an A. When I had to reschedule an exam, she welcomed me into her office, I took the exam, and we walked to class together and talked about movies. 3 assignments a week which all take roughly 10 mins + lab.
I loved this teacher and anyone who says otherwise didn't try in this class.I HATE SCIENCE but this teacher was really engaging and always ready to help out. She gave the AMAZING choice of taking the exam or making a presentation. The presentation isn't much easier because you have to understand what you are talking about, but good choice to have.
This professor treats her college students like elementary school kids. She doesn't know to explain content and makes 40 slides a day but doesn't even make it through half of them. On top of that, she has no respect for our time, she makes us stay 5 minutes after class and doesn't even notice it.
I currently have Professor Sit for EAES 111. Yes, she's very sweet but I am struggling so hard in the class. She has favorite students and seems to favor them. When I would email her and ask a question, I would get passive aggressive/condescending emails. She does not respect our time and never gets through all of the lecture slides.
She is very nice but treats students like we are 6. The quizzes are honestly difficult. Sometimes, she doesn't make it through slides; SO MANY useless clickers. Confusing material at times. 4 Quizzes, 3 Portfolios (They're easy), 1 Project/Presentation, many blackboard check ins. Also, the lab makes no sense half the time as in the lab packet.
i took this class as a science elective because this is supposed to be an easy class but she makes the class harder than it needs to be. it doesnt seem like a 100 level class, even my cs classes seem better compared to her class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU LIKE THE SUBJECT.
Very sweet prof, but I am being so sincere and honest when I tell you not to take this class for your gen ed. It is a lot of work, and if it's a major requirement or major elective, I wouldn't even be mad about it - but it isn't for me, so I am fighting for my life over a gen ed class.
she really cares for her students and wants them to succeed.
Very kind professor who does a great job getting to know large classes personally. Although a bit off track sometimes, overall explains ideas clearly.
Super sweet and caring and makes sure to get to know students! The homework wasn't too bad. The exams weren't too hard, but I don't think she prepared us too well for them. I made a lot of friends in the class, though, and I really liked it. The pacing is good and you learn a lot.
This professor taught the class like it was a preschool class and I mean that in the best way possible. Having more difficult topics explained to me in that manner stripped them of their intimidating nature, and made harder subjects feel more approachable. The class always had a good vibe to it and tests were always straightforward.
