Funny easygoing guy but not an easy subject. He was very understanding of the fact that it wasn't easy and tried to help as much as possible. No homework. Four tests (more of an opportunity to boost your grade) and the final. Had online optional quizzes for extra credit that SHOULD be taken advantage of.
Very easygoing. He creates a comfortable experience because he understands that it isn't a subject that is easily absorbed. He is definitely helpful with helping you to pass the class by giving extra credit work. However, he does move through chapters very quick so if you don't get it the first time, you better get a tutor.
This teacher is the worst lab teacher at Georgia State. He appears to be outgoing but he gives a squat about wheter you pass or fail. Quizzes are hard, final impossible! Do not take him! He will fail you!
Great lab instructor. Very short lectures allowed for more time in lab. If you can follow a cake recipe, then there's NO reason not to do well. He does a good job of roaming about in case you need your hand held. As for the quizzes, ALL QUESTIONS WERE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE MANUAL. Very fair grader. Good guy overall.
Simply awesome. Extremely helpful
By far one of the best professors I've ever had at GSU. Gave a lot of extra credit to help your grade as much as possible and he was quite willing to spend as much time with you to help understand the material. Highly recommended if you want to take Chemistry as your science core.
horrible professor. does not car whether you pass or fail. easy lab teacher but impossible for lecture. do not take him!!!
horrible professor for lecture. Does not convey the information well at all. If you ask for help he will make you feel stupid. Do not take unless you want to teach yourself
Not a great professor. Doesn't take a lot of info from book, he even told us he didn't like the book. Quizzes are very difficult and he has one every week. We even had a test on monday and quiz on friday. Wouldn't suggest taking him. Learned more in lab than in class.
He just read from the powerpoint; he never actually taught. He moved very quickly, so you need to either write very fast or print off the powerpoints. The quizzes were harder than the tests, and the homework was practically impossible without google and yahoo.
The example of a professor that should never step foot in class. Quizzes and homework assignments are nearly impossible to do. Horrible lecture methods. Has the habit of saying "Don't worry about it" or "You don't need to know this". Those two statements means you need to focus on that material in detail. Would never recommend taking him.
Finnegan knows his chem but not that adequate in teaching it. To be fair, Chem is hard and teaching it is even harder. He's new so he may get better at teaching it as time goes on. To do well: be a step ahead of him--in readings,do problems,go to the SI,utilize his office hours(he's helpful),youtube hard concepts.
Dr. Finnegan reads directly from the powerpoints. Makes going to class fairly useless. Not good at answering in-class questions. The format of the class is the same as all other 1212 classes but there are far better teachers (Thota, Barrow, etc)
had him for fall sem, he was great! very nice and helpful! in class, he just reads the powerpoints, i didnt attend class much and still made a decent grade. :)
He makes you come to his office to pick up your graded quizzes, yet his office hours are so limited. If you've got class during his office hours, good luck, because he rarely makes exceptions and almost never responds to his emails. There are better teachers you could take that actually care about helping you pass. Finnegan's not one of them.
Pretty easy class. Finnegan is pretty clear with his teachings. He bareley teaches from his slidesjust lectures and then solves examples. tests are easy and he drops two lowest quiz grade and 1 lowest test grade. No reason you shouldn't do well if you read and do the homeworks question he ask you to. Overall a decent professor.
Don't take him. Take any other teacher than him because if you don't read ahead or know your chemistry, you won't get a high grade.
he is alright teacher, i wouldnt take him again though, the test are easy if you studied for them, its pretty much straight foreward. If your class avg falls below a 75 on either test or quizzes he curves them. I dont recommend him to all, because he is not an all round teacher. Probably only to those who get chemistry easily
He's nice and willing to come to study groups outside of class time but I'm not a fan of his teaching style. His explanations can make things more confusing, his quizzes are short and sometimes hard but he curves them, and his exams aren't difficult but can be worded oddly. I wouldn't recommend him for anyone who isn't already good at chemistry.
Dr.Finnegan knows the material but hard to learn from him. You have to teach yourself. Read your textbook in detail to do well on his hard quizzes and comprehensive tests. I ended up with a B in lecture, but I suggest taking another chemistry professor if you can.
Horrible professor. Just reads off powerpoint slides in class & isn't very thorough. Quiz every week & they are quite hard. He admittedly likes to give trick questions & put questions on the test in ways he's never shown before. Barely curves anything. Take anyone else!
ok look chemistry is a tough course. you have to read the textbook and do problems on the end of the chapters in order to do well in class. finnegan is actually a pretty good professor. anyone who thinks he is a terrible professor probably gets babysits most of their life and can't deal with real life. you get what you give in. grow up!
Steffan is very knowledgeable when it comes to this subject.. However, not so much when it comes to teaching this subject..He reads off his slides, does some class problems, and expects you to know it all. I would not recommend taking him unless you want to teach yourself.
Chemistry will be a difficult class no matter who the teacher is. That being said Dr. Finnegan is willing to work with you so that you are able to understand the material. Quizzes and tests are difficult but prepare his students for the final. Go to his office hours and it will help tremendously.
In short, you have to be a self-learner to do well in his class. If you can't teach yourself, you are in trouble!!
He was a great teacher prepared you well for the final. Go to his office hours to get any clarifications and he gives an abundance of extra practice problems to help you.
He is horrible at teaching. I would say only 40% of students attend his class. On quiz day , after quiz half of the class storms out. His tests are extremely hard, most of the students in my lab failed. The few that passed received 72-75. I dropped the class.
Does a good job making it clear what is expected on upcoming assignments. if its on the quiz/test, he talked about it. Also more than willing to answer any questions for extended periods of time after class as well as in office hours. Easy A for people with decent work ethic, if youre lazy, you will fail like most other classes. Nice guy
HARD CLASS, must study. Would never recommend summer chem, regardless of the teacher. He is great- always willing to help if you have questions, prompt email response. Signed up for him again in the fall.
Class is difficult. You need to read chapters prior to coming to class each day. Does explain things well. He will help and clarify questions either in class or in office hours. Would not recommend taking chem in the summer-dangerous! But overall he is a great teacher. Funny, sarcastic, but very helpful. Even though i took him twice! Again in fall
A very hard class. His method of teaching to his students weren't really effective. About half of his students had withdrawn from the class last year (2011)-each having the same problem with Finnegan. Probably not the best class to chose for Chemistry.
If you are lazy, you do not need to take Steffan. He is a good professor that is very helpful and will work with students that need it. He goes out of his way to help students that ask for it, but if you do not put the minimum 10 hours a week of studying and problem solving, you will not get an A. He doesn't 'give' you a grade. You have to earn it.
You have to study to make the grade. If you give 75% to this class, you will earn a 75. Simple as that. Do your part.
Chemistry is a hard subject. He is helpful but his tests are hard, but its for the better with the ACS. If you know you will not read Dont take his class. Study groups help too.
He knows the material greatly but has a hard time teaching it to the class. The class moves too fast and the test are hard. STudy groups will help but if taking this class make sure you don't have any other classes worthy if a lot of your attention because this class will consume all of your time.
He knows his stuff just not how to convey it to the class. Not a very good TEACHER, i basically had to teach myself through power-points and reading the book. Many ppl dropped his class, i should have as well. Take the these reviews of him seriously. In his class you have to teach yourself, this makes it a very demanding class.
he talks really fast. thinks everything is really easy, so he barely does examples on the board. the examples are on the slides and i just stare at it trying to figure it out, and then he goes to the next slide. pretty hard class with him. i made an average of C's in his test/quizzes, did ALL masteringchem, did very well in lab, and got a B.
Try your best to avoid his class if you are not a self learner because he is basically no help.
All of you saying he's no help obviously never tried to get help. He helped me every time I had a problem and the class moved at the pace it needed. If you read before class and work problems, you will do fine. If you don't do your part it will be hard and you will fail. Plain and simple. Amazing guy!
Every chemistry class you take is going to be hard, no matter who the professor is. If you don't work, you are not going to succeed. If you take Finnegan, he is VERY helpful and always answers e-mails and works problems when asked. Yes, it's fast paced, but it's a lot of material in a little amount of time. You have to WORK to SUCCEED in CHEMISTRY!
Hard class no matter what professor. He is very helpful though unlike most so that's what makes it better! If you do your part, you will pass. You get out of it what you give in to it.
He's the most well-organized & helpful of any professor I've had. He has every resource you could imagine online, & posts grades quickly. I don't understand the complaints about him being too hard/not lecturing enough, because his tests have been very straightforward; the subjects and problems he lectures on are exactly what's on the test.
Cool guy. Hard Class. Chemistry is a hard subject period but he doesn't make it better. Talks extremely fast, not enough time to comprehend his examples. Be ready to teach yourself. I dropped the class.
Very helpful and good at explaining difficult concepts. It was a lecture hall, so there were many students, but he still would answers questions clearly and concisely. Extremely easy to talk to and resolve issues with. He provides SO many resources, so if you want to do well, you will. Best chemistry professor I've had.
Great professor, very helpful, but it is a hard course...you have to put in the work to get the grade. You can't just show up and expect to pass.
Not a bad prof, just didn't explain things thoroughlly. I'm assuming all Chem prof are like this, though. I wouldn't take him again. Try to find a better teacher that'll fit your study habits. Don't slack off if you take him, if you slack off once, you're doomed. Sit in the front and ask a lot of questions in office hours or end/begin of class. GL.
4 tests (uncurved), lowest test dropped; nationally (bell) curved final (includes 1211 material, so I hope you have a good long term memory); Slight European accent (VERY good English for a foreigner); Does his job properly but students complain of difficulty of material; Basic algebra skills are a must; Heavy on memorizing and logic; Recommended
This class broke me down!!! Do not know how I made the grade I did but I prayed to every god there was out there to get through. You cannot slack off at all. You better get it together from day 1 and have no life. Lab with Ong saved my life. Youre in for it!
He rushes through the material which is understood because of the amount of information but he assumes you already know it. If you read the book and do A LOT of practice problems then there's not much need to attend class. He also loves to copy questions from old tests to make his new tests so do ALL the old tests and it won't be too difficult.
Awesome professor! You have to work for an A in his class but its worth it you will learn a lot in his class. Just read the book and go to his lectures and you'll be fine. Dr. Finnegan always had office hours and was willing to help me. I received an A+
He doesn't know how to teach. Extremely non-caring, doesn't look like he even wants to teach. AVOID his class at all costs. Half my class failed, and most of us got Cs. Very hard tests.
Quality professor, approachable, timely, and appears to have an interest in his students. He is challenging but fair. Don't expect to come to class and have the material "uploaded" into your being. If you intend to pass you will have to work for it. He provides slides, practice problems, and a myriad of other student aids.
Great teacher! Considering how rushed summer sem is he did his best. He provides everything you need to do well in the class. It's up to you on how much time you put into it. You have to work for it. I did all the hw and practice problems and got an A. I didn't really use the book. you tube videos help a lot more!
He gives you more resources and is more organized with it than any professor I've ever had. He's excellent at teaching to different levels of comprehension if you take the time to go to office hours.
Awesome teacher! He's really down to earth and has no problem taking his time to explain things. He provides tons of resources for you to excel in his class. His teaching emphasizes learning the logic behind things rather than simply memorizing information.
I was SCARED to take him for chem 1212 cuz of all these bad reviews. I struggled at first in his class but i have to say I ended up really liking his class. you ACTUALLY learn in his class. Chem 1212 isn't an easy class to begin with, you DO have to work your butts off. He made things interesting.. TAKE HIM!
Your book is your life jacket, the only way to not fail if your not good in chemistry is to read daily like he ask. Also don't fret to much over your F's on in-class quizzes, and try extremely hard in Lab. You can completely bomb his class and still get a B as long as you Pass lab.
Very hard class and a very tough teacher. If you are terrible at chemistry or chemistry isn't your strong point then avoid this professor, the toll this class takes on your GPA isn't worth taking chances.
I actually like dr Finnegan. he is a really good teacher and he knows the material. he tends to be an ashole sometimes though but besides that the class isn't bad. assignment wise, you will not get more assignment from him than you will from another chemistry teacher so yeah.
He posts all work online which is highly recommended that you look at before you even attend his lectures (sometimes you won't even need to attend his class). He posts previous quizzes and exams (and those tend to be extremely helpful to prepare for his exams) which are ACS style- he only wants to prepare us, but you will have to work for it.
Not an "easy" class but chemistry isn't easy with any instructor. He goes pretty fast in lecture and expects that you spend time outside of class reading/studying and gives overview and basics in class. Lab is a major part of grade and easy if you do the work. In class quizzes are pretty hard. Online quizzes are easy. ACS final is hard but curved.
His logic is that if his class is hard then the acs test will be easier. Its true but he destroys your grade in the process.
Finnegan was my lab professor for 1211k, spring 2014. Funny guy, very knowledgeable, helpful guy overall. Would take again.
Made lab relaxed and didn't waste time in lab lecture. Finnegan told you exactly what he wanted from the lab report, notebook, and what the questions of the final would be. Made chem lab an enjoyable experience.
His assignments, quizes, and tests are dificult compare to any other chem professors but, he teaches better than any one else. He is the best if you ask me. He dont expect students to memorize things but wants to understand and know it which is rarly seen in most professors these days. This is a plus.
He is not an easy teacher but he is a good one. He know what he's teaching and tries to simplify it in comparison with the textbooks. His quizzes and exams may not seem easy but they are easy compared to the ACS final exam. All you have to do is study outside class and go to his office hours with problems for him to solve and explain.
Good, solid professor. He teaches the material well and he's a pretty cool guy. You really can't complain about the difficulty of this class, because he teaches you everything that he tests you on. Straightforward class.
He's a great professor. Wish he gave more examples of Math problems for the tests. He really wants to help students understand. He does mess around with the students, especially the ones that come late.
He has low tolerance for late students. He will embarrass you if your ever late to his class sometimes. But he explain chemistry very well! Do the practice exam and quizzes cause those REALLY help you. Drops the lowest online quiz,in class quiz and exam. Willing to help his students all the time. Finnegan is a good chem professor! Take him!!
Not there for students at all. He makes his tests insanely difficult so the ACS is easy but that's not necessary at all and it kills your gpa in the process. Not worth taking him.
I did well in this class because I did a LOT of work on my own. Read the book, do practice problems and don't expect to do well just by going to class. Finnegan goes through some stuff very quickly but don't be afraid to ask questions because he'll stop and try to help. Go to office hours too. Overall he's funny and was laid-back in lab.
So, I am not very good a Chemistry. I'm currently taking the class now. He's very dense in lecture and kind of all over the place, but his office hours are helpful. I feel like some GSU chem profs don't care if you fail, but he wants you to pass. I'm doing pretty well, but I'm definitely working for it. Buy the ACS Study Guide. Its essential!
This class makes you work for your grade. He really wants you to know the material and pass, contrary to popular belief. He answers emails about questions quickly and is always in his office during his hours. He likes helping! Chem is a tough subject,so you HAVE to do work outside of class;Finnegan can be confusing at times, but overall, he's good.
never again... for large lecture .
I usually excel and enjoy science classes, but he made me hate chem. I know several students that dropped the class and changed majors because of him. It's not that he doesn't teach, he just goes too fast and doesn't care about students. His tests are very hard. He does put all notes and old tests online, but they're not too helpful. Avoid him.
One of my favorites at GSU; he's funny, can have a good conversation with, and super helpful outside of class. Chem is a hard class to teach as a lecture, so you can't get a 1-1 like for a small class. I'm bad at it, but I'll probably get an A bc of how much he helped me understand the material outside of class. Also, he doesn't read off his PPs :)
His lecture was very broken and extremely hard to follow. From Chapter 1-7, he did a mediocre job delivering the material compared to my AP chemistry high school teacher. Through out half the semester, I stopped going to class and just teach myself the book.
I took Dr. Finnegan for lab. I didn't really feel like I walked away from the lab knowing as much as I could have if I had taken another professor. If you ask for an explanation for something, he'll give it to you, but other than that he skips pre-lab lectures.
SELF TAUGHT CLASS. He's a cool guy and all but I would not recommend him. Although he counts 3 of 4 exams and curves the final (ACS), his exams are difficult. He counts 8 of the 10 quizzes that basically come straight from google. No need to buy the book because his extensive power points basically sum up each chapter.
This is definitely a self-taught class. lectures are confusing and difficult to follow. But his power points he posts on d2l of each chapter from the book are actually really helpful when it comes time to study for exams. other than that, would not recommend :(
If you study and pay attention in class you will make a B, but if you want an A prepare to work extra hard.
I will NEVER EVER take him again. Got my 1st C ever! Lectures are unclear, he does post power-points online, but this class is basically self taught. I'm struggling to maintain my C. I would not recommend him, stay away! He's funny and laid back but he is not very helpful. Class was based off of tests that are hard! Never Again! Ever!
His powerpoints often aren't helpful without his explanations, so going to class will definitely benefit you! No homework, but he encouraged the use of his practice problems which helped me a lot. He's very charismatic and down to earth also funny, will have no problem helping you. His classes were always fun, would definitely recommend him!
He's a good lab instructor. There are no quizzes. His grading criteria is basically "meh, that's fine." For me, that was alright, but I know a lot of people who are really picky about having clear instructions on what to do, especially for the lab report. He's a cool guy though, and he is as chill as a lab instructor could possibly be.
This guy is AWFUL. He may be good at teaching higher levels but he should never teach intro courses. He was hard to contact for office hours, a jerk, and not good at explaining basic chemistry. If it's too late for you, you can find the book online as a pdf for free.
All of the exams resembled the study guides. The lectures were not very useful for the exams. Make sure you work together on the online chapter quizzes. Go to office hours to get clarity on certain subjects.
LOVED ITTTTT
He is great
