This class is really fun, the professor is funny. His TA, Jason is totally hot!
One of the best professors I've had at ISU.
he is one of the rare profs that i will never forget.
He is a great teacher. Most likely one I will never forget. Too bad he's not going to be teaching this class again.
He is one of the best professors I have had at IA State. He made the class easy, interesting, and even incorporated episodes of the simpsons into his class. Take any course he teaches and you will pass with flying colors and never forget it.
By far one of the best professors I've had at Iowa State. He's extremely knowledgable and helpful and is willing to put the students first.
I've taken all his undergrad classes. He's a great teacher and knows how to have a good time. Teaching style incorporates several mediums and helps you remember the material. Never a boring moment in his class!
Great prof
Best Pol Sci prof i've had. Very good.
Easy, Easy, Easy. And he is funny as heck. Lots of good stories about growing up in Cali, Columbia. Tests weren't too bad. Reading schedule is very tolerable.
absolutly awesome
Great class, keeps students engaged with stories from back home. Great lectures, provided ppt slides to allow you to focus on smaller details.
Awesome professor! His stories and sense of humor always keep class interesting and entertaining.
First professor ever to display Jon Stewart's naked Supreme Court on the overhead projector.
He commented during class one time that Florida looked like a ****. He's hilarious! I would recommend him for a class because he keeps things interesting.

Okay so I was a grad student and we are treated a little bit differently and better...but Steffen is so great as a teacher. One of the best!
He was my 1st & last classes. Funny and he doesn't care about his language or sharing humour. Uses f-bombs and interesting details. Talks a bit about his life. He IS very full of himself though!
Hey is an awesome professor! Very funny, and the exams aren't that bad!
He's cool.
We didn't learn anything. We just sat there for forever but we never learned a thing. What's the point?
Good professor. Usually gets the point across well. Tests aren't bad, but you do have to study some. Most of them are half multiple choice/half short answer. The final (comprehensive) was all multiple choice. No papers, projects, and stuff like that, which is a HUGE plus!!
You don't learn anything in his class, it is all just him ranting. You time is better spent reading the book than going to lecture.
Easy class, as long as you read and know your vocab. Helps to go to class, but he's interesting, and quite funny. you never know what he's going to say. my easiest pol sci class by far.
Easy class if you read and study. You don't really need to show up to class but there are random questions on the tests that you'll probably end up missing if you didn't go to class. He does tend to ramble on subjects that he somehow ties back to his original topic.
Great class! He did ramble on and sometimes he would edit his ppts during lecture which was boring, but for the most part a great class. Lots of interesting stories and he would start rambling in spanish which was hilarious. TA writes the tests and if you know the vocab plus about 5% of the other stuff, you'll do fine
Schmidt is quite possible the greatest professor of all time. This was pretty much the only class It's comparable to if Lewis Black was a political science professor.... and I mean that in a good way.
I haven't taken 343 tests yet but I had him for 215. Easy enough class if you study well enough. attending class isn't all that useful but he can be fun and random e.c. points pop up a lot
Great prof! Lectures are usually interesting. Textbook was very helpful and easy to read. Make sure you attend review sessions with TA!
Schmidt is one of the best professors at ISU. He is hilarious, very witty and you'll love him from day 1. Go to class and take notes because test questions usually come from the lectures. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED.
Class was very interesting and fun. He did a great job of making an online course very fun and exciting!
lecture was good but his TA would go through each answer before the test so it was an easy A... really nice guy though
Funny guy who is easy to listen to. Make sure to attend class for extra credit and pop Quiz's. Those are super easy points and add up. Also attend review session's they are very helpful and will basically give you at least a B on the tests.
This class was all online but was easy. If you don't mind taking about an hour or so out of the week to read posts then you will get an A. He explains everything through the internet and gave extra credit opportunities.
Great Professor, Great Class!
Nazi. Forces you to buy his overpriced paperback textbook and stupid clicker. Wont show up for class has TA's write test and teach class. When he does show up he plays video recordings of himself on youtube.
Poly Sci, 215...Yes, the ta's meet before the test to give you answers. but if you are planning to get an A, this is not the class. 95% is an A. He hardly ever teaches his own class. There are pop quizzes , which are tough to prepare for because of the vast amount of material that can be tested both from the book and outside knowledge.
don't take this class. would not recommend it.
the class is organized terribly and it's very frustating. the ta just reads off notes when dr. schmidt isn't around. dr. schmidt hardly teaches the class. get used to special lecturers coming in. also ta's don't return emails.
Hard class. Professor Schmidt is a very interesting person, but not so much as a professor. You have two papers on top of a bunch of tests and B.S pop quizzes. It's a ton of work, lectures are long and boring. He is never there.
Very easy class. If you watch the news(the political news)the in class quizzes are easy. The TA's give you the answers to the test in a review session. Follow the format for the paper and its an easy A.
Nice guy! I enjoyed his class and we had an awesome TA that went over the tests the night before the exams. I definitely recommend going to SI if available.
He is great. He is a busy man and unfortunately is not around a lot but he is respectable. I enjoyed this class and as long as you go to the study sessions then you will pass with a good grade.
One of the best professors. I would sincerely recommend Steffen Schmidt. It was a pleasure to learn from a master teacher. Please take his class or you'll be sorry for missing out. Needs to be more sensitive to minorities and international students/scholars. Needs to focus more on issues/events abroad. Tends to focus too much on America/Americans.
He REALLY knows Latin America politics, speaks 3 or 4 languages and LOVES teaching! I learned a lot and he pushed his students. The slackers failed the class! Take classes from him. He's known as Dr Politics and he IS!
Interesting man with a lot of interesting life experiences, not very interested in teaching in my opinion. the tests are somewhat difficult but not terribly and they are created solely by the TAs
Teaches this class like a grad. class not a intro.
Good teacher, he really loves what he is teaching and I learned a lot from him.
Fun class..go to it everyday..majority of questions are random facts from class i.e. What is the area in the gulf ocean where nothing lives due to pollution?....yea that random...great guy and has his own radio show
In previous comments people say he didn't teach much, but in my class he taught everyday. The TA's write the tests, but as long as you go to class and skim the book, you'll do well on the tests. In my class there were 5 tests, no pop quizzes and the lowest test score was dropped at the end of the semester. I really enjoyed the class
VERY interesting class, Schmidt obviously loves teaching and politics. Tests are written entirely by the TAs so they differ in content and difficulty each semester. Textbook was somewhat useful... I used an earlier eddition and did fine. Go to review sessions. Go to class. Extremely interesting lectures.
My favorite prof. of the year BY FAR. So hilarious! He keeps the lectures moving & interesting. Tests are done by the TA's and were total cake. He makes it easy & fun to learn. If you can take a class with him, do it! You WONT regret it!
he's a really cool teacher....one of my favorite=D his class is interesting....and the tests are very easy( made by the TA'S)I enjoyed this class a lot=)
POLS 215- EASY class. So glad I took it! Also pretty interesting if you are at all interested in our government and its history. Go to class, take a few notes, and ATTEND THE STUDY SESSION! They pretty much give you the answers straight off what will be on the test. I got an easy A in the class.
I have taken PS 215 and two online classes from Dr. Schmidt. Super easy, the online classes are actually interesting, he puts videos up and I learned more from that then actually in his 215 class. He is interesting but also cocky. He thinks he is the king of PS. But overall easy and good teacher.
He definitely knows his stuff, but this class was incredibly easy. It was pretty much identical to the government class I took in high school. I never bought the book but I still was able to get A's and B's on the tests.
Prof. Schmidt is a genius. His brashness about how our government is acting at the moment is hilarious and insightful. Show up to lectures, read/watch the news, and take notes. If you do these things, you'll end up with an A.
This class is EASY. There is really no incentive to attend class besides the fact the Schmidt says some funny stuff! But ATTEND THE REVIEW SESSIONS. They're not intimidating at all and they give you test answers straight off the test!
Prof Schmidt did a great job with a basic intro class that was way to easy for some and really hard for foreign students and others. I hear that 20% fail the class every semester so it's not a piece of cake.
Very, Very easy class. If you took government in high school, then this class should be a piece of cake. One of the easiest classes at ISU. But Schmidt, he's an interesting character. He makes the class enjoyable through some of the things he does and says.
For me the class was not so easy - I guess my high school govt class sucked! Schmidt is famous and that made it fun to have him as Prof. C-Span came and taped a class - they have only done 150 in the entire USA so it shows they think Prof Schmidt is really good.
My high school government class was really in depth so this is a pretty easy class for me but he keeps it really interesting and entertaining. Im an engineering major but might take another one of his classes because I enjoy him so much. He's also very personable and love talking to him after class and asking his opinion
He is literally the best, makes plenty of jokes during class and keeps everyone interested and he is super approachable. This class is really easy, getting an A is piece of cake. attend the review sessions! take notes about random stories schmidt mentions during class because they will show up in the exam and most importantly do the readings!!
One of the most entertaining professors at Iowa State. I am very sad I waited until my last last semester to take one of his classes. The class is not very hard, but you learn a lot from in-class discussion. The material is all very modern and relevant making it easy to pay attention.
This is the guy to learn about American Government from. Take notes in class, especially on the little tangents he goes on. Go to the reviews and extra credit sessions for success in this class. Also make sure to use details on the discussion assignments.
Wasn't very interested in the class but I enjoyed going to lecture, he kept things interesting for me
Made me a huge political enthusiast. Makes you realize your responsibility in our society. A lot of his test questions are worded "according to Dr. Schmidt on this day" so go to lecture for those. He tells you to go read the textbook because he wants to talk about the interesting stuff in lecture. Tests are over "this chapter through this chapter"
Listen up this man is a god send. Professor Schmidt is probably one of the best professors that I have had so far. He is funny throughout the entirety of the lecture and there is never a dull moment. You also gotta root for team Schmidt since they are the best TA's in the game. He also thiccer than a bowl of oatmeal.
I love politics and Prof. Schmidt made it so much more fun. There is never a dull moment in his class, he is very spontaneous but you also learn a lot. He emails out information to his students when asked and is an all around great teacher.
As a student not going into political science I took this as a fun class. I have it at 9:30 in the morning and it can be tough to get up and go but I have not missed a class because I enjoy his class so much. He is funny, practical, and talks about modern day politics. He is my favorite teacher of the semester. TAKE THIS CALSS EVEN IF ITS FOR FUN
Dr. Schmidt is one of the best professors I have taken a class with here at ISU. He is hilarious and also very knowledgeable about the material he teaches (including many present day examples) which made class fun to go to. Be sure to take notes, attend class with guests speakers, and do the study guides and you'll for sure get an A. Awesome class!
The reasons why I loved this class are also why other people might hate it: he is extremely laid back, swears a lot, and has a sarcastic sense of humor. This was a discussion-based class, in which I still can't figure out what his political standings are. It's not your typical straightforward lecture, but it was always interesting
LOVED professor schmidt. Great guy, makes jokes. Lectures can be boring but I always loved going. His study guides prepare you well for the tests.
Awesomeeee
Great professor, with knowledge and background about what he is speaking about which makes his lectures even more interesting. Beware of a lack of points except for exams. Other than that, it was a great class and I highly recommend it.
A wonderful professor! I will never forget him! He is very nice and the class was very interesting. I learned a lot of stuff in one short semester. I would even take more classes with him. Great teacher and great guy, super duper friendly, and very accommodating.
Schmidt is a great professor and is hilarious. He is always real with everybody and gives great lectures. His tests are super easy (drops lowest score) and as long as you show up you will end with an A. There are chances to earn extra credit in class as well.
If you show up at all, it is an easy A. The class is just basic US government. Lectures can be boring but he would often throw in test questions from his lecture that you couldn't find in the book. Provided study guides before exams.
Really good at teaching material, and you can learn a lot. He is not blatantly or intentionally biased against Republicans and is generally very fair, however sometimes it shows through in false statistics reported by the media that he shares in class, and sometimes will miss represent conservative ideals. It doesnt seem purposeful however.
Schmidt is one of the best professors Ive had at Iowa State. His lectures are very interesting and he is hilarious. I took Political Science 215 as an elective. Even if you have no interest in PolySci, TAKE THIS COURSE. Easy A with and awesome teacher!
Easily one of my favorite professors so far. He's funny and makes lectures interesting. He also picks out really good TAs that help you in discussions and are easy to work with. Tests are basically the study guide, so fill out the guide and pass the test.
Great professor. One of Iowa State's best. Basically, all you have to do is show up (his lectures are fun) and review the study guide before each exam. Extremely easy A. I studied 3 or 4 hours before each test (4 tests) and that was literally the only out of class work I did the entire semester. Go to extra credit lectures, they're worth A LOT.
