Worst Prof ever. Last term I had an 85 avg in 1080. I got 25 in her course.
She does mark easier on the final, started with 68% went to 80% after exam.

She starts off very hard but gets better as the term goes on. If she knows that you are working and you come to class you will be fine. I'm not that great in English overall and I managed to get a good grade in her course....therefore she cant be that bad
I've been an A student for the 3 years I've been in university - she gave me 30% and told me my writing didn't belong in university! I no longer have any confidence in writing papers anymore! :-(
Oh boy!!! Where do I start! If you are thinking of being an English major, one class with this woman will not only change your mind but probably make you question why you are in university in the first place. She is mean and unfair. RUN FAST AND RUN FAR!

never had a problem with a prof before, but I had to drop her course about a month into it. She was very intimidating and I hated how she always put you on the spot and made you answer questions every class and would not take 'I don't know' for an answer.
I think she's very smart and knows what she's talking about but she marks a little too hard. I got A's in all my previous english courses and I am struggling to get 50 & 60's in this course. Love the course material but find it hard to enjoy the class.
She knows her stuff... BUT I'm doing 5 engl this semester, 80's in 4 of them - 44% ave. in this course. There is something wrong with that!!! Especially,when I'm putting more time into this course than all of the other combined
She is a very knowledgable prof, and is always willing to help those who are putting in an honest effort. Do the assigned work,show up to class, and you will be fine.

Knows her material but is VERY difficult. Should teach graduates, not undergrads. Not helpful unless you know material inside out. Not a good prof for weak essay writers. Not good for your self-esteem. But you do come out with a lot of knowledge.

I cannot believe she chose her husband's book (which was AWFUL) for class. She has serious favourites, but will tell you exactly what she wants to hear and if you repeat it back to her you'll do ok.
She expects second year students to write at a graduate, take home, level on in class essays. She even told the class her own qualifications and then asked us why we could not do as well as her at our level making everyone in the room feel like fools.
avoid this class!! She is one of those profs who does not want you to think for yourself, but rather feed back EXACTLY what you hear in class. She also expects you to be professional writers, I don't just mean good grammar either. I had never gotten below 70% in english, but I got 55% in this one...
OK, yes, she can be a litte intimadating, BUT she is fair. Her classes are interesting and comprehensible. She is not a bad grader (I have done TEN english cources, and have had her twice). She wants her students to do well and interact in class, this is not asking too much!!
I thought she was an excellent prof. Has high expectations, but we're not in high school here, are we??! A little intimidating at first, but if you come to class and work hard, she treats you with the utmost respect and wants to help you. I'd recommend her to anyone who wants to try and do well.

While I was a student in this class I felt like I was not even supposed to be out of high school let alone a 4th year english student. I was told that I wrote on the caliber of a 1st year at best. I have done many other English courses and I have done fine but I am not going to let her get me down.

I think I have learned the most from her class than I did from any other English class. Unfortunatly the grades she gives don't reflect upon that. her idea of help is to tell the student to drop the class. I want to do good and she seems adament about getting me out of her way

To the previous commenter: if you write your essays the way you write your commments, no wonder you got 1/12. If you write correctly, go to all the classes, read all the material, and take her advice (it's good advice) on how to improve, you'll do fine. My highest marks come from Algoo-Baksh.
I cannot believe how berating some of you are! stella was an awesome prof. before you skip classes and slack off....remember...that is probably the reason why you got that mark. go see her and really participate in class. Dr. Algoo-Baksh is a very hard marker. I did go to see her and it did improve my mark, however, I still feel she marks too hard. Her expectations are very high and to me, it seems that she is very old fashioned when it comes to grading. She is a nice lady though.
At first she does come off scary, but she is truly one of the best profs I've had. Go to see her and show some interest, she has a reason to be offended if you skip class. Such a caring lady, I know students who still come by to see her just to chat! She's wonderful. Don't blame it on the prof if you didn't lift a finger.
i got a good mark in the course. i attended all the classes. i still feel she has no right to treat people in her classes as badly as she does. it was a pretty hellish few hours each week, she could be very insulting to just about anyone in the class. if you can take the same course with someone else it might be in your best interest to do so.
She seems to be a very intelligent woman, no doubt there is a lot I could learn from her, but her behaviour in class was quite demeaning and discouraging. She marks hard, and I think maybe expects too much. If you're looking for an easy prof, dont go this road, but she does know a lot. I found that she did discourage students quite often.

She's an university professor, not elementary teacher. She believes in good education. Very helpful (if you ask for help!), very clear in what she wants (good spelling, grammar and sentance form/style). I got a 65. No complaints. I learned a great deal from her. Wish I asked for help earlier in the semester. Good prof. Worth the student debt.

This woman was a nightmare. I dreaded everyday I had to see her face. She was cruel, and and one point she actually said to our class, and I quote: "why do I even bother." Some people who went to her for help (including myself) were belittled and made to feel as though they were idiots. I would never want this woman for a teacher again.

Dr. Agloo-Baksh i a really good prof and she makes things interesting. Sure she strickly requires attendance but hey, you can't learn if you're not there. She is clear in what she wants from her students and gives plenty of time to do essay...however, no time to read novels.
I am not a fan. She was not at all understanding or empathetic toward students. I think she has lost her passion for literature. Also, uses the word "wanton" far too much.
Horrid. Absolutely HORRID! For those who aren't willing to work, say your prayers. I worked hard, with no reward. I was guilty of missing classes, but made up for it. She embarrassed me, failed me for decent papers, called me an injustice to a story, and refused me a make-up exam but not to others. A nasty woman. She's a detriment to self esteem!
I dunno what to say about Ms.A-B,she helped me outside of class time which I apperciate and I also got an okay mark as well,but I found she was very rude at times and she took it personally if people missed class. One time we had to pass in an essay she listed all the classes we missed,and she puts people on the spot alot. I wouldn't recommend her.

I would not rec her for anyone. She is very strict about attendance and will hold it against you if you miss one of her classes. She seems to pick on people as well. Sucking up and volunteering is vital. To her credit, she will help you outside the classroom and provides information then that is very helpful. A smart woman, but not a very good prof

Haha, I pitty all of u who did a course with her.I attended only one of here classes, and that all it took me to realize she goin to be a pain in the ass. On of the best decisions in my Mun time is switching out of her class. Get Joe Byrne of u can, he's awesome. From what i see from ppl's comments i did the right thing :D. ended up with 76 :D

This prof is aweful. I have gotten As and Bs in my 3rd and 4th year courses, and D in hers. Spiteful, intimidating, rude, condecsending. I hated going to class. Says things like, "Ugh, I'm going to shoot you guys." You don't learn anything in her class, she just wants you to regurgitate. Only people who seem to like her are first years.
She was like getting taught by my nan, except she didn't love me unconditionally. Seriously though, you won't learn as much with another prof as you will with her. Regardless of the other comments, I think she is a good prof. She pretty much spoon feeds everything to you. She reads direct quotes from the novels, and gives a decent amount of notes. She tells you what she knows, and of course she's going to test you on what she has been telling you. She does take attendence, so, just go to class.

I am a smart student and usually get A's on my writing and this woman used me as an example in front of the whole class to show how to NOT write a paper... she was so rude and made me feel terrible about myself... she is not just a terrible prof she is a terrible person.
She's a really hard marker on essays. Attendance is mandatory, she takes attendance every morning, and gives critisism about people who don't attend class.

This woman actually got mad at me for writing my in class on paper that was too small and made me copy it over to 'normal' paper AFTER it was corrected...yes, this is the type of person you are dealing with. She will also say stuff like "are you even in this class?!?!" if you don't bring your book, even though you go to every class and it is week 6

A waste of life. There is no pleasing this woman. I worked harder in her class than I have worked in any course EVER, and still almost received a 70%. However, she marked my class so bad that someone stepped in and jacked our marks up by 10%. Overall, she has a vendetta against human life and makes students feel terrified to share their opinions.

Ok, here's what you need to know about Stella. Show up to class! Read the books before you start them in class and think about the text. She's actually an amazing woman and if you work har enough to get an A from her, it really means something. She'll make you a better writer and reader so please, don't let your fear of her get in the way.
Dr. Baksh is wonderful! I look forward to English every day. She is always in a good mood, always pleasant to her students, and very helpful. You will be put on the spot sometimes, but if you read your materials and prepare for class (like you should anyway) you will be ok! P.S. I hate English, but she is making it manageable for me!

Shes honestly not as bad as some people are saying. Yes, attendance counts with her. If you go to class, she gives you so much information on the novels there are no surprises on her tests. Read the novels, pay attention, and you'll do fine. Shes not cold-hearted when you show an effort. If you don't go to class, don't expect to do well.

Never in my life have I ever come across someone with such a "My way or the highway" attitude. No matter how well you do on an essay, she will NOT take any opinion but her own..She has much to learn about opening her mind up to new and fresh ideas. I was in an accident, could not go to class, this isn't an excise with her though. Wrote an excellent paper but since I don't go to class she failed me. Went to talk to her about it, her response was "How do you expect to know what is in the books if you don't come to the lectures?" I was pissed so I just told her because I read the books and left.
Avoid this professor! She is unable to comprehend any opinion other than her own. I attended all her classes (attendence is a MUST), Read all the material and wrote papers that would have earned me good marks in past courses. She failed me.
Avoid like the plague, because she probably conjures it out of her boiling cauldron. Seriously the worst professor ever.
Ok...wow...this truly was a horrible class to be in, i'm not gunna lie there were times where we had fun debates but other than that it's horrible. Very subjected to her own opinion and a very tough marker expect 50's and low 60's. Gave lots of information but didnt deliver it properlly. Does pick favourites. GOOD LUCK
There were 42 people in my class at the beginning of the semester and only 18 were left for the final as most had dropped out. most of the remaining 18 also failed including myself.
So she started the first class off by saying we were all zeros, and then held the opinion that we were all going to do bad. You deffinately have to show her that you are paying attention in class and work extremly hard... if you're lucky enough she wil pass you. And I suggest not yawning in her class. Best of luck!
Horrible proffessor! I would not recommend her for any course. She picks on people in class and even if you try to answer a question she often says your answer is wrong. Also she doesn't want people yawning in class. If you do bad in an essay and go see her she is not nice about it. Highly reccomend avoiding her!
She knows her stuff really well, but is a very intimidating woman. All the comments are talking about how hard her course was, but I'm a psych major and I managed an 'A' in it, and I suck at english. She's probably not the easiest teacher but she prepares you very well for other english classes or any class that requires essays.

She was nothing but encouraging and supportive. She makes her students push themselves. Very helpful when it came to suggesting extended reading material. Very knowledgeable lady.
