have never met him in person since this covid situation, but very reachable and caring for the students not like some of the others. he listens to students and will reach out first, this says a lot. no comments on the course-related work since 242 is just hard in general.
Dr. Paul seemed nice and offered some really helpful extra credit at one point, but I didn't get the chance to interact with him much because I had the asynchronous section. The lecture videos were made by a different professor. Taking this class async was super stressful and I wish I'd switched to a section with live Zoom classes.
This class was asynchronous and it made it incredibly difficult to attend. If you can keep up with actually going to the recitation and watching the asynchronous lectures, i'm sure it would be much easier. But I wasn't able to.
Overall, he was a pretty good instructor. This semester all of his lectures were recorded by another teacher, but he formats the class in a way that sets you up for success. Lots of extra credit opportunities, and plenty of office hours to attend if you have questions. If you use all of the recourses available (lecture videos, TA's) you'll do fine.
In only around three weeks and I can say that Dr. Paul is a very solid choice for a calculus instructor. He gives a plethora of office hours and communication options to the TA's and himself that studying is very easy. Only thing is that the quizzes are short, so if you mess up be prepared to get a B at the very best and a F at the worst.
Stepan is a great math professor, by FAR the best I have encountered at NCSU. It is no surprise to me that he used to teach at Harvard. He has easy to understand lectures, gives fair exams, and is very patient. Coming from someone who dropped calc 3 last semester because of a bad teacher, I highly recommend Dr. Paul.
If you have a chance to take Dr. Paul for any calculus class, do it! He's a good lecturer, and his class has the most forgiving grading structure I've had -- quizzes, no big tests. Also, he cut a lot of the more "in depth" offshoots of topics and stuck with the most important material. People in other classes are having a much harder time it seems.
Great teacher, really in-depth with what's going on "behind the scenes" regarding 3D-functions and multivariate calculus concepts. Pretty tough class, but 100% take Stepan's lecture class if you can.
Dr. Paul is easily the best Calculus teacher I've ever had. He is amazing at engaging his students online, which I had no idea was possible based on my other courses this semester. He is always addressing the students and asking them to respond to his questions. He was super accommodative towards the pandemic and even any problems at home.
He makes calc 3 more complicated by giving impossible problems. He doesn't give answers or work for review problems so there is nothing to study/you have to teach yourself. His quizzes are short so it is hard to do well. He rarely gives example problems in lecture. The written homework is very hard and is graded harshly even though it's homework.
He wasnt horrible, but he definitely wasnt good either.
Calc 3 was bound to be a very challenging course, but if I had to take it again it'd be with Dr. Paul. Online school made this a lot harder than it probably needed to be but there were a lot of office hour times every week. Instructors expected this class to be hard so you can go to office hours with any question.
Dr. Paul made the content interesting and easy to follow. He was available outside of class time for questions and made an effort to ensure everyone understood the material. He was receptive to feedback and he provided several opportunities so people could succeed. While the class was not easy, if you put in the time and effort, you should do well.
Gives the most complex homework problems ever, doesn't explain any concept, teaches the most basic thing, and then expects you to be able to solve complex equations. Recitations are pointless because TAs doesn't know what they are doing. WORST CLASS EVER!!! Assigns 4 homework due all on the same day. Thinks his class is your only class.
Dr. Paul was great. He taught lectures in a way that was very ordered and easy to learn. Written Homework was a lot harder than the WebAssign or Recitation problems, so you should ask help from other students or office hours. Midterm exams were easier than the Written, so if you can get through the Written, you can do fine on the midterm exams.
Stepan isn't terrible but isn't amazing. I've gotten 80's on every test so far. The HW problems are much harder than the examples in class but that's kind of the idea of Calc 3 which is to make you think. He is fairly accessible and the tests are reasonable difficulty. Probs wouldn't take him again but he wasn't the worst. He's a good 2nd option.
10/10 would recommend
Easy class. Attendance was optional bc lectures were recorded which was amazing bc I could speed it up. Lectures were pretty boring and I found not helpful sometimes. Easy homework and video links provided that helped. No textbook. Tests were average, nothing crazy going on here
Dr. Paul is the best calculus professor I've ever had. He does a great job of making his lectures informative, engaging, and easy to follow. His tests are fair and test you on the actual course content instead of busywork, and the homework is light. I would highly recommend taking calc 3 with him.
Dr. Paul is an excellent teacher. He knows the content he teaches well and translates it to make it easy to understand for his students. He has a decent amount of homework, but they are helpful. His tests are a bit difficult, but going to recitation is super helpful.
Stepan was a pretty chilled out professor. Although it was lecture heavy, it was optional to go in person, all lectures are recorded and posted to moodle the day of which was nice. Decent amount of homework, but if you pay attention to lecture and take notes it's fine. Allows a notes sheet during exams which was also nice, would take again!
If you learn calc by knowing the background rather than working out problems, you'll like him. As someone that likes going over examples, I didn't like him. Gives study guides without the answers, never grades homework before tests, and failed many people that were 1 point away from passing. Material is hard enough and Dr. Paul doesn't help.
This class is time consuming, but if you're able to manage that while mostly understanding the material, it's not too bad. The tests weren't bad, you get a note sheet that you create, but there's a lot of room for mistakes, and very few questions (miss a couple: B-/C). Biggest issue is no solutions/answers to test prep questions, which I despise.
Grade on Moodle doesn't reflect what you actually have. I had a high A all semester on Moodle but received a B at the end. This math literally made no sense like there was a lesson on Kevin Bacon?? Not many questions on tests. Grades homework slow. TA was never available to work with my schedule. Avoid this math if you can.
Stepan normally teaches more advanced math courses, but I took him for MA103, which is taken by humanities majors only. He understands this and caters the course to real-world issues like voting theory. It didn't feel like a math course. His lectures are both interesting and clear, and his exams are fair, with potential for extra credit.
While the amount of classwork was not debilitating, I found myself learning that googling the topic and learning off of online videos was better than actually going to class and leaving confused.Take this section online as it is easier.
If you are bad at math..TAKE THIS CLASS!! I take it online and he explains everything sooo well. Plus the homework is pretty easy and prepares you for the test. Just make sure you do them..plus he is hot.
Stepan Paul is the best. Calc 3 isn't easy content, but his lectures are AMAZING at explaining concepts in an understandable way. Lots of useful resources available for help. He cares about your learning and it shows
Great lectures, one of the best professors for Calc 3
He was a good professor. Attendance was not mandatory but encouraged. His exams were easier than the homework assignments, and he allows a cheat sheet. He adjusts the weight of different exams in order to help your overall grade the most. I recommend him for calc 3.
I actually really enjoyed taking his class! His lectures are amazing & he explains concepts really well. Lecture/recitation attendance isn't mandatory & everything is recorded but I do recommend going in person. There's the usual WebAssign hw but also written hw every week where you scan your work and turn it in. You get cheat sheets on exams!
The course is difficult like any Calc 3 course should be but Stepan makes its very possible to do very well and learn the material if you go to his lectures. He lets you bring a note page to exams, and WebAssign homework isn't overwhelming. Most importantly, he is an entertaining lecturer.
He is a really good lecturer. He has clear notes and goes through them and writes them during the lecture. He uses a lot of examples in class. His homework consists of written assignments and webassigns, so there is a good amount of work, but it really helps you understand the material. The material is hard, but he allowed cheat sheets for tests.
Dr. Paul's teaching is pretty clear and you can tell he tries to put in time and effort to help us understand. He's just not very forgiving when it comes to partial credit and homework. Half of his tests are MC lol. I also genuinely believe he lacks empathy when it comes to students who aren't doing very well. A good prof, he's just not very nice.
I can't say I totally liked Prof. Paul in general, but he taught the class well. I'm not a very math-brained person but I was able to understand all of the content. The tests are exactly what is practiced in class. The lectures have plenty of examples and opportunities to try problems.
Dr. Paul was very fair in my opinion for the tests and homework so to speak. The lectures were very in-depth and he didn't assign a lot of homework. You get a review sheet for every test including any formulas which definitely helped. If you can, find a good TA and get help from them to understand the content a bit better.
He explained concepts clearly and gave fair tests. I would definitely recommend his class!
Is easy to understand and follow in lecture but do not get behind. Some topics aren't gone over fully in class so you'll have to figure some things out using the textbook or internet. The Hw's in general just suck because it's webassign. He doesn't drop the lowest test grade out of the four so be prepared for every test by doing the practice exam.
He is good at teaching but I just didn't understand him method. He forgets to complete his thoughts.
He was a good lecturer and would introduce the concepts behind the material well but I mostly learned what I needed to know for the tests from my recitation. I would recommend going to recitation if you have a good TA. On tests and written homework he was a really tough grader and didn't give much partial credit but most questions were from lecture
He is the type of professor where accidentally had a negative final answer instead of a positive one and he would take off the majority of points for that question. He is also the type where you can get a final grade of 69.99 and we would still fail you. Worst of all he rambles on during lectures and does not post an answer key to any tests.
No... Just no. Turned what should've been an easy A into a C. Don't get stuck w/ him.
The lectures were fine, but the homeworks were brutal. Not getting a good recitation TA sucked, as we were just told the answer without any real explanations. A few if the homeworks were unnecessarily long, but they were good test prep- the tests were on materials that were all covered in the homeworks. FYI he gives out webassign and written hws
Dr. Paul is amazing, but the class is graded by a few amount of things. Be sure to do good on the exams or you are screwed, as this class is graded by few things.
Dr.Paul is okay. His tests are not hard but also not too easy, they require you to carefully understand the materials in class. But his written HWs are stuck, it's harder than the Webassigns. You have no idea if you did right or wrong and being taken point off which make the overall hw grade even worst.
Stepan Paul's lecture are not mandatory, but I would definitely recommend attending his lectures as they are very useful and informative. Do well on the mid-term exams as they take 50 to 60 percent of your grade depending how well you do. His homework are not super hard but I wouldn't say they were easy especially the last homework.
He knows what he is talking about and takes the time to make sure his students understand the material
I had a great experience with Dr. Paul. Just pay attention in class, take good notes, and make good cheat sheets and you'll be fine. He was a little tough with written homework and the tests were difficult, but if you use all your resources, you'll be prepared. It's a hard class in general, but Dr. Paul was organized, prepared, and helpful.
Let it be known that RMP DELETES negative reviews about Dr. Paul. I'm reposting my review so people genuinely know what they're getting themselves into. Do NOT take him if you actually want to learn the material. He's very unforgiving, apathetic, and unapproachable. I took him last semester and unfortunately got catfished. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
STOP CENSORING NEGATIVE REVIEWS RMP!!! DO NOT take Calc III w/ him. He gives practice tests with NO answer key, so you have no idea if you did the problems right or not. Additionally, the practice tests aren't even like the actual exams, so all of your studying is for nothing. Take Calc III either online, w/ Kurtz, or at a community college.
He teaches the class in a very descriptive manner and makes sure everyone asks questions and knows the processes he is going through. Very caring professor. His tests are weighed heavy but are easy to get maximum points on if you show work.
His lectures are very unorganized he uses a powerpoint and hand written notes, he also doesn't finish in class examples or upload his completed notes. Tests are nothing similar to examples hw or practice tests and the cheat sheet you are able to make doesn't help you. If you want to teach yourself Calc III take him but if not take anyone else.
Dr. Paul is a good professor for a hard class. His lectures were useful and recitation gave you a space to practice what you learned with TA feedback. He also lets you bring in an equation sheet to all tests. Overall, I thought he was a good instructor and a kind person
Dr. Paul does not post full lecture notes or solutions to anything, so be ready to not know for sure if you are right on anything. He gives lots of homework and his tests are out of few points: he is quick to take major points off, so you have to do near perfect to do well on the exams. Good lecturer but not my favorite professor.
Good professor. Makes a difficult class easier to understand. Pay attention to class, take good notes, and practice recitation problems. Took the final during the next semester, due to an incomplete, so I all but failed the final, dropping my grade significantly, but before I was in good standing in the class. Final is cumulative and difficult.
Good guy but very difficult class. Does not post solutions to practice problems or reviews so you never know if you are right. Exams are very difficult & out of few points, very easy to score badly & takes off big points often. Review/homework problems are not like exams. Final exam is very difficult & cumulative
He has good lectures, very clear and easy to follow. He doesn't teach directly from the Web Assign textbook which I am extremely grateful. There's quite a lot of homework as we have to do both web assign and written, but it's not too terrible. Tests are graded very weirdly, I've lost a few points of very specific things...
Dr. Paul is very good at teaching. Homework can be a bit much, especially near the end of the semester. Tests are fair. One recommendation I would give is to go to recitation as the written homework is based on them. My only complaint would be that he doesn't post full solutions to practice problems and homework. Take him if you can!
Had for Calc III and he was awesome! Lecture and recitation not mandatory but highly recommended to for an easy A and is definitely used effectively for teaching.
Dr. Paul's lectures were mediocre and somewhat boring. Typically two WebAssigns and one Written HW assigned per week, and homework got more difficult as the semester progressed. Midterms were similar to recitation problems, but the final was difficult and confusing. A cheat sheet was allowed for all exams, including the final. Take at your own risk
Dr. Paul is an amazing professor in Calc 3 and he's super organized with the way he teaches the material. Having forgotten much of calculus since I went over a year without it, his style made it very easy to get back on track. He's able to manipulate calculus in a clever manner that makes it easy to learn and master. Would highly recommend him!
Challenging but very interesting class. Dr Paul really finds math interesting which is nice it makes him a better teacher for it. The way he has class structured is a lot of work but it really does teach you the material. He was also very helpful if you found anything challenging you could always ask him and he give good responses
I really like Dr. Paul but I would not take him for MA225. He does a flipped classroom which may work for some, but what you learn relies somewhat on what other students come up with (which may be incorrect, we do not really know). He does not give many solutions for exam prep so if you rely on things like that, don't take. He's a cool guy though
Ran a great lecture and explained some pretty tough concepts with approachable language, visual aid, and intuitive examples. My only complaint is that practice tests would not come with written solutions or even answer keys at times, which made it difficult to be confident in your abilities before tests. The tests weren't all that hard, though.
DON'T TAKE FOR MA225! This class was horrible for proofs. Had to show up to class with all of the problems in the chp. completed, & you were randomly called to present your answers & were graded on accuracy. Only passed because he allows you to work with classmates. 3 HWs due a week. Weekly 1 quizzes with no partial credit. Good luck if you take.
I loved Dr. Paul. He was always so helpful and responsive in office hours and outside of class. If you show up to class you will get an easy A. The test came straight from the lectures and recitations. Honestly, I loved his class and would highly recommend.
Stepan Paul is a wonderful professor his tests are not very hard. This is one of those courses where you get what you put in. 100% Recommend
Dr. Paul was an excellent professor for Calc 2. He allowed students to bring one full page of notes to the midterms and final. His course was clearly designed to prioritize learning concepts over focusing on grades, this was clear in his attempt to make it easy to maintain a high grade in his class.
Dr. Paul is a great and very helpful teacher. His grading for Calculus III was also very fair: [15% Online HW, 15% Written HW, 40% Midterms (3), 30% Final Exam] Although they were long and tedious, his written HWs prepare you well for the midterms and final. Dr. Paul is a good professor, the course was only difficult for me because I'm stupid.
Stepan Paul was the best professor I had. He explains his concepts well
He's very good at explaining the concepts and always uses visuals and graphing tools. There was two WebAssigns and a written homework per week both for accuracy, but you are allowed to use whatever you want to get the homework done and its not super difficult. He's very clear with what's on the tests.
Stepan Paul is the goat for calc 3. You can tell he really knows and has fun with what he's talking about. A good amount of homework but it does help prepare you for the tests. Content can be difficult but is made a lot easier if you consistently go to lectures/recitations. Would definitely take again.
Really good professor, explains concepts well. Calc III is a class that requires a lot of practice, and he assigns enough homework to give you that. The homework could be really difficult, but often they prepared you well for the tests which were much easier. Good professor, hard class.
MA425 is hard by its nature, but he does such a good job breaking down complex/abstract concepts. He doesn't want formulaic answers/proofs, so you definitely have to know what you're doing going into exams (defns, logic, and how they work together). HW is more doable if you work with others (on purpose), but he also has weekly HW problem sessions.
Dr. Paul has many failsafes in place to make sure 425 students can't fail. There are easy quizzes every week, in class presentations for which everyone gets 100s, every hw has extra credit, he drops your 2 lowest hw grades, weights your best exam highest and worst lowest. Not to mention his amazing visualizations of real analysis topics.
Take Stepan if you want to understand the material in depth. His lectures are super useful. Super accessible outside class during office hours. Super nice with grading. Take him if you can!
Dr. Paul has an amazing 425 class. If you do all the assignments, you will learn; that's just the nature of how he structures his class. I had him for 225 and he was pretty good but his 425 class really makes you understand why he is a professor. He can teach you an abstract concept in a way you can materialize and grasp.
Dr. Paul was great. he often explains the topic and then work through a few problems and you can ask questions along the way. I wouldn't call this class easy and its not a class you should slack off in but it isn't going to cause unnecessary amounts of stress
Best professor I've ever had. Real analysis is difficult but he made it feel very manageable. He gives a lot of homework and pre class readings but they are tremendously helpful with understanding the content. Great lectures and a low stress environment. Show up to class and engage with the content and you will succeed
This Class feels like a High school class, and not in a good way. its an obscene amount of work, and he expects attendance every day and you have to present to the class, and graded on this. alot of class time is group work solving problems. The class isnt particularly difficult, but i would expect a more rigorous feel for a class like this.
class is 4 days a week and attendance is required. do not take this section unless you want to get treated like a middle schooler. While real analysis is a difficult subject, the professor acts like students wont do any work or attempt to study unless he breathes down your neck, just assigns alot of assignments for completion, just because why not.
He is overall a good professor, though he does make the workload quite a bit tougher then it needs to be. He is certainly not for everyone, but there are some people who do like his class style. He is a good teacher overall, and if you take 425 with him, you will not fail. I have enjoyed his class so far, despite the intense workload.
very odd class structure. only math class where group work was expected so much. also kind of weird to effectively require attendance for a class that meets 4 days a week. I saw some other ratings describing this class as feeling like its for middle schoolers, and I couldn't agree more.
I found calculus 3 easier than calc 2, as do most people at NC State. Dr. Paul was amazing - every test was clearly written and contained material we had spent ample time on during class. If you have the option, take him!
I loved this course. Midterms were very representative of what was taught and the final was of average difficulty. More than enough practice material is provided to succeed. Both him and the TA (Chris Cardullo) were very helpful. In my opinion, the homework gets excessively tedious towards the end and sometimes more difficult than the midterms.
