Stephan is a great professor. He explains what he wants from your speech clearly and does everything he can to help you do better on your speeches. Even incorporates Taboo one day in class.
Mr. Ihde is a very nice and FUNNY man. He notices and will comment on your improvement. Fair grader->do everything to his specifications. No extra credit. Everyone is nervous during first speech, so dont sweat it. I am now able to give speeches. HARD T
Nice guy, cares about his students. Fair with grading. Always willing to help you, and is energetic about the subject. Not too difficult of a class as long as you show up every day and put forth some effort. Can be cheesy at times, but that's okay :)
Not a bad class at all. He is interesting and for the most part enjoyable. Make sure you take note of all his advice! Tough to get an A, but a pretty easy B.
He makes going to class extremely enjoyable and is quite entertaining and helpful. It's COMPLETELY impossible to get an A on any speech though, no matter how good you are. You'll learn a lot but you won't be earning a 4.0 in his class, try as you might.
Nice guy but he doesn't give A's. He will tell you pretty much everyday that today is the first day of the rest of your life. His lectures were as interesting as they could be and when he wrote the tests they were clearer then when other profs. wrote them
Great guy, Not an easy grader, follow his directions and you should be fine, tests are moderate.
After reading all of these things, I can't believe what they're saying. I got an A on my first speech - and it was on something I completely hated. :) Great professor - just make sure to stay in the time guidelines and QUOTE YOUR SOURCES!!
Mr. Ihde is an extremely nice teacher. He jokes around a lot. He is a tough grader- you need to do things to his specifications, and the tests are hard! Also, there are pop quizzes-so dont be absent. But I became a better speaker by taking his class!!!!!!
Ihde is a very good teacher. You are GUARANTEED a B. He makes you really work for the A. His grading on speeches is extremely hard, but as long as you do ok on the quizzes and homework, you'll do just fine.

The class is easy and fun, if you do all the reading and prepare for the speeches. The reading is tedious and the tests are extremely detail-oriented. When doing your speech, anything less than a full dress suit will get you marked down for appearance!
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Not hard but annoying. Never teaches. Quite hyprocritical. Doesn't know how to take a shower. Never explains assignment. Ugly and difficult to stomach.
I think he is a bad teacher. He does not respond to problems that you have and he shows favoritism. If you do not want to be a suck-up and ask him about every little thing, don't expect to get an "A" on a speech.
Good teacher, seems to really care. He is a tough but fair grader. Make sure not to go over time on your speeches!
He's a very nice guy but a hard grader. Seems to show some favoritism. If you're looking for an easy A look elsewhere unless you play football.
Caveat emptor! This class was a complete waste of time. Class work is nothing but "busy work" you'd expect of a junior high school and the information given is meaningless. The teacher shows EXTREME favortism and grades the same. I would definately suggest finding other teachers for this course.
He is a terrible teacher...he told students the first day of class "you will probably not get an A is this class"...and well he kept that promise no one in my class so far has gotten an A...its speech class...give me a break!!!
HE IS CRAZY!!! DONT TAKE THIS CLASS..speech is suposed to be an easy and helpful class but it isnt. He tells you from the begining that he only gives out one or two As a semester. Hes weird and gives pointless homework.
If you speak well this is an easy class
The first few days of his class, you will think you're going to like him. He shows favoritism in his grading, though. If you are a good public speaker you won't get A's, only high B's...if you suck, you'll get an A...I learned a lot, but I wouldn't recommend him if you want an easy A.
The professor was very nice, helpful, etc, etc, but he grades hard on the speeches. It wasn't hard to get a B, but you had to do amazing to get an A. The exams also took a lot of studying. A lot better than some of the other professers I've heard about
My only complaint is that getting a B is easy but getting an A is nearly impossible. The tests suck so luckily there are only two. But as far as Ihde goes he's a really nice guy and he's not boring. I liked doing the speeches and stuff but I hated having to learn stuff from the book like " post hoc
i dont think anyone has gotten an A on any of the speeches in my class so far, absolutely ridiculous for a gen ed class
i really enjoyed this class. classtime wasn't boring & he definitely made you want to pay attention. getting an A is hard work, but not impossible.
The teacher's a good guy, but his class is impossible. He gives hw all the time that's pointless, it's impossible to get an A on a speech, and you can almost never miss a class if you want a good grade. I'd recommend taking someone else.
Nice guy, but hard! NEVER will give an A on a speech...NEVER! grading gets harder and harder as you go along, tests are so hard! find someone else to take! He seems to forget that we are not speech majors, ridiculous for a gen ed.
A very funny teacher. I liked him a lot. He is a hard grader, but only when giving out As. It is very easy to get a B. He plays fun games to help you become a better speaker- I would definitely take him again.
He is a nice teacher willing to help you in any way that he can, but he's not going to baby you. The coursepack has everything you need to know. he loves giving out 89% on your speeches. funny and charasmatic. i learned a lot.
wants you to fail! he never reminds you about upcoming assignments that are due and is a very hard grader. Tests are impossible and he is not compassionate or sympathetic at all! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Nazi style grading, impossible to get an A, pop quizzes, and hard tests. I made a pretty good effort and got a C.
Good teacher. You will learn alot in the class. Tough to get an A, but worth it.
He is a great teacher, he is really supportive. He gave a fair warning about his grading system, and he gives out a course syllabus, if you give it the old college try, you will do fine!
grades really hard, but loves working with students. random in-class exercises at beginning to help people get comfortable. would take him again if I could.
Pretty good teacher. Some of his lectures were quite boring, others were lively. But he does grade fairly. Three speeches, a few in between homework assignments, participation in rating other speeches, and two exams are basically all your assignments for this class.
Lectures are unbearbly boring, and he grades really harshly on speeches. He likes those who follow the formulas he gives, rather than actual good speakers. He's a little arguementative, if he corrects you on something in class, don't bother arguing.
To the people who say he gives no As on speeches thats not true. I have seen a lot of people get As, but you better work for it and deserve it. He is a great guy, smart and passionate and will help you ANY way possible. If you want an easy class, dont take it. If you want to learn a lot, take it
Don't take him if you do not already own a full suit if you're a guy or a dress that you would wear to a wedding of you're a girl was a very hard grader did not give me an A when i gave a speech on a disablity that I have had since I was FIVE YEARS OLD!
He is a very passionate teacher. You will not recieve an easy A but you will leave the course with a lot of valuable knowledge. He gives you the grade you earned in speaches not what you would like to have. Lectures are sooooooooo boring but a lot of the test questions come from them so go to class!!!!!!
I did not see one A on anyone's speeches the whole year. He recognizes that students have never had a speech class, but grades harsh on areas that would not be polished in speeches due to lack of experience.
Hard Speech Teacher. But, his class is interesting. It is organized extremely well, and his lectures are very good. The textbook/concept part of the class is great. Speeches are hard to get As on. He is very picky but his feedback is usefull. If you want to challenge yourself to be better a speech, he is a great teacher to take.
Very unfair. First day he will make sure to say that he doesnt give As. Something that did not sit well with me bcus that was assigning grades before the student has a chance to prove himself. He NEVER reviews the lectures so read the text carefully and pls take good notes. His grading is more than cruel and he does not 'ammend' them. RUN RUN RUN
This is not the class to learn to give speeches. If you're not good at public speaking I would not recommend this class. He shows very little mercy!
Ihde was tough, but you should take him if you want to speak well. Hard work+Practice=A. Just start on speeches early, read, and get help at office hours to get an A. His tests/quizes were mild to challenging. His lectures were interesting, fun, and helped for everyday speaking. I hate speaking, but this class gave me more confidence in speaking.
If you are not a good public speaker, do NOT take him!
Good teacher, make the class fun and was never to strict. COME ON SPEECH DAYS if you dont want a major hit on your grade. I didn't read the book and walked out with a B...listen to what he says because he will look for improvement in those areas the most.
Great teacher. Very interesting class. However, I recommend that you either have a desire to become a better public speaker or that you are already really good at it. If you study and spend time on your speeched you will hit an A or B (probably a B though). He is not easy only because he wants you to become a great speaker.
he is a very nice guy and has a interesting class, but the test given are really to much for a gen ed class, but still should have came away with a "B" but because he grades you as if you been speaking since you came out of your mother at birth i fell short and got a "C", if you are looking for a high grade get another professor
This was a AWESOME teacher he was funny and knows alot...he gives awesome feedback after each speech so that you can improve on your next speeches..the class consists of 3 speechs, 3 assignments, 6 quizzes (drops 2), and some other work but it is very easy..he also has 2 exams which are half lecture and half text...he is GREAT take him
Mr. Ihde simply has a passion for teaching. He cares about his students and reallly wants the best for everyone. He gives excellent feedback, and is also a very funny guy. Speech lectures are a boring process, but he find ways to make them interesting. If you speak the way he wasnts you to, you will get a good grade.
This class was extremely helpful, however my grade did not satisfy how much I learned. If you are looking for an easy A do not take this class. He is very hard on the grading of speeches and you won't get a good grade just for "trying". It was a very disappointing experience for me in the end. Because his grading I would not recommend him.
He is a funny great teacher. his lectures teach you alot, but the tests are very hard and are attendance related. minimul work and a few assignments in the labs. If you want an A study for the tests and cover everything in your speeches even if they suck, if you hit all the point you will passs. But if your speech is good but does not cover the te
Ihde is a great teacher. He really wants his students to do well and learn how to give a decent speech. We always did fun workshops that made class less of a drag. Tests were hard, you definitely have to read the book to do well. Gives great feedback on speeches.
Ihde is a rly good teacher His feedback is amazing, the labs are where u learn bout public speaking the most. The speeches arn't hard if you try and just relax He's funny and entertaining keeps the class loose and chill He does grade a little hard but thats bc he wants u to do better. This class is worth it ! Take this class!
Great Proffesor. His lectures are really useful, helpful, and interesting. He has a great sense of humor. But this is definately not an easy A...but yet its not an impossible coarse to take. Coarse based on surprise pop-quizzes ( he uses the top 4 scores out of 10),3 speeches, and a midterm/final. I passed with a B. READ THE REQUIRED CHAPTERS!
Mr. Ihde is a great teaher, but if you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. There are 3 speeches which I got all A's on, however the tests are extremely hard, You HAVE to read the book or you will not do well on the tests. Because of the tests I got a B in the class...but even with that it's a good class you just have to work!
Is actually a great teacher but grades really hard! As far as speeches go, if you have trouble speaking in public, don't take his class. I worked really hard on a speech and got a C-.
he is very dynamic and upbeat.. and random, like to talk in random accents sometimes. he doesn't grade horribly tough, but you definitely have to work for an A
If you are looking for an easy A look elsewhere. Very hard grader on speeches and you can only miss class 5 times a semester before you lose points. Very nice guy and very organized and lets you know what you need to do but like I said, you'll have to earn every point you get. On tests focus mostly on definitions in the book.
Prof Ihde is a really cool guy, and he's truly not there to make you fail. I reccommend if you ever need his help, email him without shame and he will help as much as you need him to. READ the assigned chapters and DEFINITLY take notes. I promise it's worth it. I am TERRIFIED of public speaking, but it's truly not too bad with Ihde's help.
Professor Ihde is a great teacher! He gets really excited about his work and his lectures are pretty fun. The work consists of 15 quizzes online based on each chapter in the book, but he takes the top 10, and there are 3 tests plus the exam, but he takes the top 3. But it's not an easy A class. You have to take notes and read the book.
Quizzes and tests are open book and online. Prof Ihde is very silly in class and is very enthusiastic about teaching. You have to go to class and use your clicker to get attendance points. Fairly easy class. I would recommend.
A fantastic professor! His lectures are interesting and interactive. It's actually enjoyable to go to his class. It's an easy subject and he teaches in a very personal, direct manner. If you want to do well on his exams, then attend class and take notes, because his tests are online and are open book/open note. Highly recommend his class!
Prof. Ihde is absolutely fantastic! His lectures are interesting and thick with information. The weekly reading quizzes were easy but I found the online exams to be extremely difficult and as a result my grade is much lower than I would have preffered. His teaching skills are enough to make me forgive him that fault especially since I'll still pass
Ihde knows his stuff. There is no question about that. His online quizzes were very easy. They came straight from the text. However, his exams were borderline impossible. I suggest you write down everything he says if you want an A on the exams. I didn't do very well on any of the exams but still managed a B in the class.
This professor was clearly upset about teaching COM 1000 (he much prefers teaching speech).. but his test are EXTREMELY difficult. Avoid this professor- it's not an easy gen ed and having to take word-for-word notes is ridiculous in my opinion. Just to warn you! :)
Very nice and friendly professor and class was interesting. However his tests were extremely hard! You must write down everything he says word for word if you want to pass his tests. Tests are worded in a very confusing manner!
Ihde really enjoys teaching and keeps his classes interesting, but his tests are DIFFICULT! You need to write down everything he says in class! Test questions are confusing and he has alot of "Select one or more correct answers" questions with up to 8 options. Keeps attendance with CPS clickers which counts for 1/5 of your grade! Tough B!
He's a nice guy, but his tests are ridiculously hard. And he's the toughest grader I've had. Seriously, he grades WAAAAAAAY to tough, and takes of for any little thing on speeches
Great man but I don't like Communications, had to take it for GenEd, but good teacher. If you have to take COM 1000, take him!
You will enjoy this class very much and the Prof loves and knows what he is doing. But to get an A you'll have to work HARD. Come to all classes as attendance counts towards your grade, take notes of everything he says, all details and stories that he tells you on the lectures. The lectures are as important as the book! Good luck!
This is one of the best classes I have taken. The tests can be a bit difficult but the lectures are very interesting and insightful. He also uses great examples and videos and sometimes brings in guests during lectures. It would be best to attend most or all classes but missing a few would probably be okay.
He's one of the best professors I've had at UCF. He knows what he's talking about. Quizzes once a week add easy A's. Clicker attendance add more easy A's. Test are open book/note, easy if you attend class and TAKE GREAT NOTES. I'm minoring in communications BECAUSE OF this class.
keeps it interesting
One of the best professors I've had at UCF. He cares about his students' well-being and is very informative. Class participation points based on clicker (go to class). Take good notes (yes, that means more than what is on his power point) and you'll be fine. I definitely recommend this class.
A pretty good teacher, but his exams are ridiculous. They are so hard and his study guides don't help at all.
He's a good professor, but know that you need to read the book, and take a lot of notes. The test reviews don't help and there are a lot of questions on the tests from the guest speakers.
Great teacher, but the tests are seemingly impossible unless you write down every word he says in class and memorize the textbook. Other then saying to do both of those things, I'll just say to try your best with taking notes and keep up with the reading and hope for the best.
Good teacher, but the tests will kill your grade. The tests cover very small details discussed in class instead of what the course is really about. Go to class or you will not pass the class!
Ihde is an amazing teacher who has a great teaching style. He keeps his students occupied at all times and uses real life applications. I thought speech was going to kill me, but he made it easy to speak in front of my peers. Speeches are easy topics, however midterm and final are very difficult. However it is possible to pull of an A.
I loved prof. Ihde! His lectures are interesting and humorous. He assigns a lot of reading. Only bad part of his class is that the 2 exams are hard and very detailed, but they are only 10% of your grade each. Speeches are 13, 17, and 20% of your grade! You may have to work hard, but you will have fun in Ihde's class! =]
I can't believe how many good ratings he has.The way he grades his speeches have nothing to do with how well you deliver your speech. He is very bad at conveying when assignments are due, and penalizes heavily for it. This course tested more how well I could turn in papers through webcourses and keep up with confusing dates than anything. AVOID IT
I took this class online. I don't understand how he has such high ratings. Its a 1000 course yet he treats it like a 3000 course. I'm a graduating senior and this is one of the hardest classes I've ever had. It's a communications course and he communicates POORLY! add the fact that it's online and its a disaster waiting to happen. AVOID HIM!
This class was absolutely awful - I got an A, but it was a nightmare! The professor has just had a kid (so is never online). He doesn't update material, errors aren't fixed til after an exam is due, he takes down material before the exam (this included material for a FUTURE assignment). You are screwed from the start. Avoid.
It's ironic to me that this is a communication class and Ihde did not communicate at all with the class. Nice guy but horrible teacher with his organization of the class. The exams are a joke and there are a lot of technical problems that he didn't care to fix. Very stressful class. Idk how he has good rates. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE!
Exams are really hard, detailed and tricky. The questions are weird and difficult to comprehend. He is good in communicating back and admitting his mistakes. Class is interesting, but professor put too much emphasis on it. It is not vital,it is just general education course! Come on,man, make it fun and easy!
He is a really interesting teacher who will keep your attention. Thought he was a good teacher and felt like I actually got something out of the class. With that said you will have to do alot of work in the class, but it is managable if you stay on top of it. Good teacher, although he did accuse me of cheating, but that was worked out
First of all,I think he is hilarious! I havent even finished taking the course yet but I think he is awesome! He gives you a lot of group activites that help you get over your fear of public speaking. He is really good at making students feel comfortable taking speech and really approachable in office hours too! He has made speech bearable for me. ha
He is so cool! Try to take him during the summer when the classes are smaller so that you can get to know him. The class is alot of work but he makes it fun. I dont think speech would be the same with any other teacher. He helps you get over your fear of speeaking and he is soo funny! He is always there to help in office hours. Definitely take him!
I loved this class. I hate speech but his class made it easier. He assigns a lot of work, but most of it is easy. He has quizzes every week, and an optional final. Everything is done open book, and open note and online so it's hard to not get an A. His exam have a lot of questions based on lectures to attendance is important. He's so interesting!
His lectures are extremely interesting, and he has a very focused learning plan. You learn a lot about communication theory and techniques to write and give your speeches. There is a moderate amount of busy work, but it's not hard. You can get an easy B or an A if you work hard enough. You absolutely need the book for the tests.
There is a LOT of stuff online to keep track of: topic sheets, speech outlines, speech reviews, speech discussion posts, tests, and weekly quizzes. it's all very hard to keep track of. Also, He's extremely objective when grading speeches: I got points off for things like voice tone & whatever every time. I found this course rather challenging...
Even though this is a speech class it's not super easy. There is a lot of crap to do, but that's also good because it gives you more chances to bring your grade up. You do have to read the book for quizzes and tests. Test questions are annoying, there are sometimes more than 1 right answer and you have get them all right or else they deduct points.
SO MUCH READING! weekly quizzes are easy. The material isn't hard but his test are KILLER. 60 min for 50 questions that require reading, and thinking and a lot you have to "check all that is correct". He drops one exam. You have to go to class, he has like 5 clicker questions each lecture. Speeches aren't too bad.
Take notes! His notes are a few questions on the tests. He's a powerpoint teacher who flips through slides fast, Take pictures of his slides! DON'T FORGET to do the speech outlines, they are hidden in the 100 page syllabus and take 3 hours to do each speech. Your grade will suffer if you forget to do those! (you'll get 40% on an otherwise A speech
Great professor. Approachable and sincerely cares for students. Go to lecture! It is important to do well on exams, as small details mentioned there find a way on the test. Keep up with assignments, there are a lot of them. Speak about what you care about. Do not be afraid. This class is very enjoyable and not as scary as you might think.
You will need the book, weekly lecture attendance, and detailed notation in order to succeed in this course. The online tests are difficult and very specific. I would suggest reference outlines for exams. Quizzes are weekly and speech outlines will set you back a few hours. This said, Ihde is a caring professor and wants you to succeed!
The material isn't too hard to understand and the quizzes are easy but the tests are nearly impossible and any little thing you do wrong in a speech will make your grade drop immensely
Fall 2010. I was not fond of this class and the way it was structured. Just do well on the speeches, outlines and don't miss any clicker points and you'll get a B. You have 2 exams midterm and final and they are extremely long. If you read the book you can do well but if you don't you are screwed. I got D's on both of the exams and still got a B
