Very hard to follow in lectures. Expects all students to be at a master's level of writing. Very unclear expectations. Hard to communicate with. Turned me off of history completely
over all, he was an average teacher; he gave students chances to ask questions in class which I really liked.
I really enjoyed his class, I found him to be a very enthusiastic prof and pretty clear of what his expectations were. I recommend showing up to his classes, attendance helps.
I actually really enjoyed his classes. He was very upbeat and entertaining. His writing expectations though seemed somewhat high, espically with the term paper. Not many test, but those that he does hand out can be quite challenging. Still a fun class though.
Not my type of prof... definately one of my least favourites so far. He's a tough marker, and not the easiest to follow in lectures.
Good professor. Needs to get better at explaining the enlightenment.
Horrible impressions, arrogant and thinks he knows everything, he even crosses out words on your exams with words he think would better suit the sentence (e.g. but should be however). Complete bore! I dropped the class into the third week!
i've had him for numerous classes. i HATED doing research journals, but i really appreciated his insight when it came to writing papers. he's a harder marker, but it's to help you push yourself for a better paper.
I wasn't a fan of his. Seemed to be a bit of a biased marked and didn't do a great job of keeping people listening- lots of people dozed. He is a pretty nice guy though
Perreault is both knowledgeable and respectable. Especially competent in religious history. He can be a little hard to follow in lectures, but if you ask him a question, you're almost guaranteed a satisfying answer. He marks papers with a very critical eye, but he makes his expectations very clear. If you are diligent, I recommend him highly.
hate the term paper. ten pages on a topic you aren't interested in sucks
The class wasn't amazing but it did have its moments. Stephane's lecture notes must be supplemented with what he says in class or they are meaningless. The term paper is difficult and time consuming but he is willing to answer any questions you might have. I found Stephane to be approachable and helpful. Details are very important for quizzes.
I love Perrault. Hilarious, amazing, interesting, always open to discuss work. I really enjoy his class. Those that dislike him suck at history.
If you enjoy a challenge, I recommend him! He marks fairly but loves essay-format quizzes, and the final exam was quite difficult. On the upside, I was challenged and learned a whole lot, so I don't regret taking his class!
He made me hate history, he's a nice guy but his teaching methods were not great. Also, the final term paper is literally the worst thing ever.
A good lecturer who genuinely gets excited about history and can make it interesting. That said, Perrault prescribes a difficult and lengthy term paper, but is always ready to consult and mentor you on it. In a small night class, he was a great instructor.
Stephane is a wonderful lecturer, engaging and interesting. I will admit the assignments demand a little more attention than some but his teaching style encourages students to think about the final assignment right from the beginning of term. one piece of advice: dont procrastinate.
very nice guy, not always clear with quiz questions.
Stephane is a great instructor. Yes, his term paper is lengthy and requires constant work, but the assignments given over the semester actually leave you well prepared when it comes time to write the paper. I took as many of his courses as I could. One of, if not my favorite prof at RDC.
I took HIST 373 with Stephane and I found it very hard to follow his lectures and his power powerpoints were also very hard to understand as there was not much information given. I don't feel like I was set up for sucess in this class. His final exam was very challenging as I felt I didn't learn anything during lectures.
This course is an option for Ed students and was far more difficult then expected. He also forgot to mention anything about the Western Provinces, makes it seem like they didn't exist. Project was a lot of work for not a lot of reward and it was difficult to know what he wanted, even when you asked he wasn't clear.
He's an extreme procrastinator on grading and is never clear on exactly what he wants in his quiz questions or on the project. Project was a group project worth 55% of our mark and was extremely vague on what he wanted out of it and listening to presentations was all what the second portion of the semester consisted of instead of him teaching.
Stephane is a wonderful teacher in the classroom but he's a very hard marker and the quiz questions are often confusing. Odds are if you think you know the answer you probably don't. If you go to him for help he tries hard to make it as clear as possible though.
I did not expect to like Stephane at the beginning of the semester. I found though, that if you worked hard in his class, he would reward you. He very clearly enjoys teaching and will help you if you need it. Most lectures are available online but you need to go to class to clarify things.
Slow marker with lots of writing. Research paper worth 40% of the class mark due on the last day of classes. Then he assigns a take home final exam worth 20% that requires just as much research and writing as the paper and its due the following week. you pass or fail this class in the last week. It is way to much work for a basic req history class.
Literally the worst prof in this school. Lectures aren't clear at all. Terrible and LONG assignments. I leave each class not even understanding what we learnt. Tries too hard to be funny and is annoying.
Do not take a class with him. You don't learn anything in this class, and will leave every class frustrated. Gives a giant group project worth 45% of your grade, but no guidelines for what he wants out of it! He doesn't give any sort of guidelines for any assignments, and his notes are useless.
Almost every assignment given is a group project. And your whole grade basically comes from one group project worth half of your grade. The assignments clarity is nonexistent and you never know whats expected of you or what to do for assignemnts. You learn nothing in this class but he expects you to come in knowing everything already.
Make sure you get the textbook because if you don't you won't learn anything in this class. He takes forever to grade and doesn't clarify what he wants out of huge assignments until a week before they are due. Too many group projects worth large parts of your grade and again no clarity on what is supposed to be done for these assignments.
So many group projects, worth so much of your grade. He gives little to no feedback on assignments, and doesnt teach you a thing. Avoid this class if possible.
Whole grade is basically based on 2 assignments. Takes forever to give back assignments and mark.
Gives little feedback on assignments that he takes forever to mark. Gives big assignments but no criteria for what you need to do on the assignment.
Doesn't tell you what to do for giant assignments until like a week before they're due.
So rude and inconsiderate to students. Has called my class dumb many times this semester for not knowing what he has yet to teach us! During presentations he would interrupt students to correct them or tell them to stand/speak a certain way! This destroys confidence and is embarrassing in front of the whole class! Such a rude teacher! Avoid!
I have many things to say about Stephane, however I can't write any of them as my review wouldn't be published. Treats students terribly, and has no patience as they learn. "Tries" harder to be funny, rather than actually teaching anything or even telling you what he expects from you.
Gives you no preparation or criteria whatsoever for any assignments he gives. Treats his students horribly, has called us stupid many times. Expects you to come in knowing everything he has to teach you.
I like history, so I quite enjoyed this class. Perreault is a little eccentric, but extremely passionate and knowledgeable about history. Take home final, but don't let that fool you.
I don't recommend him as a teacher mostly is a self taught course with not much guidance. He is a nice enough person but not ideal for my learning.
Gives virtually no criteria for assignments. Your whole grade is pretty much based on 2 papers. Spends too much time trying to get along with students rather than making sure they know the content. Pretty much have to teach yourself all the information. Disrespectful and rude to students.
Stephane was sick for about a week, and without trying to replace the time he missed, he thought it would be a good idea to make us write a paper on stuff that he did not even teach us. He is the worst History prof I've ever had. He is also a very tough grader, and will not tell you in which areas you have messed up. He is unhelpful.
Lectures are good. When he actually decides to come. He does not give results/marks back fast at all. He "cannot concentrate on it." Would not recommend as a professor.
He is very passionate about the content but is not realible whatsoever when discussing due dates and what is to be expected. Definitely has favourites and marks harder then what is necessary. I would not recommend him as a professor
Stephane takes ages to mark everything. We had a research paper and proposal due and it was a month before the paper was due and we had yet to receive the proposal mark. He's procrastination in marking makes it difficult for you to tell if your doing the right thing on assignments.
tough marker but good teacher
Stephane is a nice person but he takes a long time to mark assignments and gives little to no instruction on assignments. He is very knowledgeable in history but I do have complaints about his teaching style.
Very boring lectures, and he is a very hard marker.
I don't think I learned a single thing in this class. Most of the people I talk to have no idea what they're doing, as he gives no assignment criteria. This was probably the most useless class I've ever taken. He expects you to come into the class knowing everything that he is supposed to teach you.
This was the worst college class I have taken so far. I have written more 10-12 page papers in the class than any english class. He takes forever to return assignments, one was over a month. He expects a lot when a majority of kids are first years. He has little sympathy and is a hard grader. His class averages show the difficulty of this class.
Terrible grader, does not give back good feedback.
Some people make a remark about a positive quality about this professor. Good for you, but this was a prime example of someone who has squandered their abilities and is collecting a pay check. I have never experienced such poor teaching qualities. I payed for a course that was entirely based on how well I taught myself, and how he felt about it.
I didn't mind his lectures. I thought he was sort of interesting. But that does not make up for his incredibly tough grading. Especially considering this is an entry level class that alot of new students would have to take. Slow at getting work back.
He is such a hard grader and will not tell you what he expects on assignments, you figure it out on your own and basically teach yourself because the lectures have nothing to do with the assignments. He is on average 7 minutes late to every class and will blame it on not keeping track of the time. Will take over a month to grade your 15 page paper.
Stephane was the only teacher I didn't like in my first year. He came to lecture the class and that's it. He didn't care about students at all, and was unapproachable. Expected way too much from student and didn't explain assignments well. I felt lost during the entire course.
I found him to be a really knowledgeable professor. He is hilarious. You will have to work hard for that A but as long as you answer the questions he provides and follow the rubric, you will do just find. I took this course because I actually like History, so you have to take others ratings with their standing.
Stephane shows an obvious passion for Canadian history, however, his marking is the opposite. He is not easy to talk to, nor do you ever know what his expectations are. The workload is very heavy, but the lectures themselves are not too difficult to understand. Only take this class if you need it, not as an option.
Do not take this class unless it is mandatory or you are a natural in History! Stephanes lectures are particularly boring which makes it difficult to follow along. 100% of your mark is on written essays. The assignment criteria is unclear, and he marks very hard. The mark I received in his class was 20% below my average.
This is the hardest class I have taken so far. I was not interested in history before the class and I am less interested in it now. There is a lot of papers and it's unclear what is expected of you.
Stéphane really lives up to his reviews here. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but boy oh boy was he horrible. Ive never had to write so much in one course before. Plus he makes you do such a long final right after you submit a 15 paged research paper. Its just inconsiderate. I would recommend avoiding this course at all costs.
This is a review for a class I took some years ago. I am a lawyer now, but this professor stands out in my mind as one of the worst and most difficult of my academic career (and that includes law school). Probably, your in his class because you have no other choice (like me in the past), but if avoidable, do not take a class with him.
Can lecture off the top of his head, engaging and entertaining, and relates the material and concepts in a down to earth way. Informal group work some days, letting you off the hook if you weren't able to get to the week's readings. You choose between numerous assignments for most marks, plus a take-home, open-book final. THIS CLASS WAS AWESOME!
Had a great term. Those complaining about hard grades simply didn't put in the effort. Want to breeze through college? Don't take a Perreault course. Want to prepare yourself to transfer to university? Take a Perreault course.
Horrific. He decided to put half his class online. So much work. Learned nothing for learning journals. I like the guy, he's cool, but I don't like him as a prof.
He made this class mostly online and gave so many assignments. This course was a lot of work and the class average was low. I put in the effort but it was too much to do for an intro course
Stephane is a hilarious and entertaining professor. On written assignments he marks easier than English professors would. He doesn't have high expectations since he knows most people taking his History course require History credits. Don't be scared going into his course, he does his best to help you succeed.
This class is a lot more work than a typical 3 credit class. He requires more work/effort than any other intro course I have ever taken. All the lectures are online and sometimes are very long. As well all the in-class learning activities don't add much to your learning yet are required. Be prepared to research and write a lot you want to do well.
Attempted a "flipped classroom" which involved 4 hour long online lectures on days we were not scheduled to have class. Received feedback and suggestions about final term paper, but not until 24 hours after the term paper was due. Has an online take home final which totals up to 12 pages of writing. Avoid this professor at all costs. Very biased.
I'm not very pleased with coming into my first year of college and having my history class half online, half in-class. Also, our final was online which I think is strange and tough for college. He was an alright guy, kind of hard to understand. I definitally won't be taking another class from him!
Super boring class. He makes it very easy for himself; half of the classes are online and when we are in class we work in groups and he just walks around. Have to read a 900 page textbook for quizzes. Basically there is just a minimal amount of actual teaching going on.
boring lectures full of info that isnt beneficial to any of the heavy workload. Tough grader and doesnt give good feedback. Tends to cancel alot of lectures and classstime while creating a ton of quizzes that dont correspond to the information learned in classes or through textbook reading. Very biased and dont think he even realizes it.
Very heavy workload. His lectures are engaging but expectations are shockingly high. Take-home final takes on average 12 hours to complete.
this was the worst course I have taken. This prof is so hard with grading and his quizzes are very unfair. Try to avoid this class and professor of possible.
"Final" is an essay comprised of multiple one to three page essays. Due immediately after a 12 page research essay that also requires a two page essay on writing the research essay. After multiple short essays that he takes forever to give feedback on. If you even get feedback. Very inconsiderate to student's time, is always late. AVOID.
Very disorganized and cares little for student time. Takes upwards of a month to mark short papers (and there will be lots of them). If he cancels class he will assign more essays. And he cancels class often. The final "exam" is really a ten page essay that requires an excessive amount of reading to complete in only a few days.
This guy is horrible. Doesn't grade anything until the last minute and assigns multiple reading quizzes during exam week. All due right before Christmas. After the class is done. On top of massive essays he assigns. He literally does nothing all term but make videos you have to watch which are full of useless information.
Awful. Imagine getting a final that has questions on it where the answers are nowhere to be found in either lectures or textbook.
This class was definitely one of the most difficult post secondary classes I have taken. 12 page research essay, and then another 10-12 page final a week later. If you can avoid this class, I would recommend that, especially if you are taking a full course load.
I have taken two of his classes and I recommend avoiding him at all cost. Prepare to read your entire 1000 page textbook throughout the semester and read an entire 100 page chapter in a whole week. He also enjoys giving 20-30 page articles that he then marls you on in class. This class is a chore and requires much more attention than other classes.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. He is unfair to his students and does not care about our time. I recommend avoiding this course at all costs. It caused me to have a major burnout.
The worst teacher and structured class I have ever taken. There is a reason why he has so many bad reviews... listen to them!!! If you want to suffer for a whole semester take this class.
When you realize that almost half of the reading he assigns are, in effect, optional you can see that his courses are super flexible. Yes, he assigns an absolute boatload of reading but you only have to do half of them to get full marks. Same with the "midterms". This class is amazingly flexible but requires some self-teaching. Don't take if LAZY.
This was probably the hardest class I have ever taken. The amount of coursework he gives is crazy, and the amount of stress it brought was the worst in any class I have taken. He expects you to write a 10-12 page final essay and then 10 more pages for the final exam, and the amount of reading that you have to do in his class is crazy.
There is a reason his rating is so low. While he isn't a hard marker, there are a lot of assignments and lots of writing. We met once a week live and were supposed to have a lecture video posted before class to discuss, these were often posted last minute or a week late. It was hard to follow and see a connection of the history to Gender and Sexual
The recorded lectures were late often and at times over a week late. There was a lot of reading, up to 100 pages weekly, or more. There are a few assignments that he says are "formative assessments" but he doesn't grade them quick enough to make improvements throughout the year.
Although this class has interesting content, the lectures were late being posted and you pretty much have to teach yourself. There are two 1500 word journals required as well as 10-12 page and an 11-page final. . Lastly, he is a very harsh marker. Advice organize your time and if you don't have to; don't take this class.
He's a bit disorganized but far from the worst prof I've had. If he was a UofA prof, his rating would be much higher. He marks your essays rather easy and you get two chances on quizzes. It is a LOT of work, but it's all things that are not too difficult by themselves.
Do not take this class ! It is way content heavy for a first year course....
This is a harder course compared to other introduction courses. Many introduction courses you can get away with minimal effort, however, this is not the case with Stephane's class. He expects his students to work. There are many papers, the final paper is extra but he's willing to help. Be prepared to work hard and you'll get the grade you desire.
He often ranted about personal things and was aggressive to students who didn't follow his (usually ridiculous) rules to a T which took away instruction time from those of us who were just there to get a grade and get out. His assignments weren't clear and asking for help was useless. Harsh marker. Not a fan.
Despite what others have said I thought Stephane was great. I think he is a tougher marker than other professors at RDP but he does give you all the material you could possibly need to succeed. I don't personally life that attendance is mandatory. All in all, he gives good lectures and is knowledgeable about everything he teaches.
I love this professor! While I do not think history is the class for me I still really loved this class and the energy he brought. He is such a wonderful prof and human. The assignments are not bad if you do them on time and not procrastinate like I did. I will miss him! Do not let his rating deter you, he is so so so awesome!!
Course was all writing assignments but seemed to be a lot for a lower level course (final paper was a 10 page paper on top of a final exam answering short answer questions). VERY slow at giving marks/feedback on assignments and did not provide full assignment instructions until a week before they were due. Did not get a lot out of this course.
Absolutely terrible professor. For a guy who requires attendance for part of your grade he should take some of his own advice and actually wake up on time for class... The amount of times he emailed us to let us know he slept in or missed his alarm was ridiculous. Also so much writing. 12 page paper and 11 page written final. AVOID!! AVOID!! AVOID!
He was VERY flexible with the deadline for his assignments, he gave you the whole weekend to do a short assignment, so if you didnt do good on this course, its on you. Cancelled classes were usual too. The final paper was kind of long but I prefer writing a paper instead of studying for a final exam.
I enjoyed this class. He made some content interesting when it could have been boring. There is an insane amount of writing considering the journals, 10-page paper, and 10-page take-home final, on top of weekly quizzes. He is knowledgeable in the course content which helps but I think the course was not well-organized and ended up a little chaotic.
While the professor's lectures and assignments can be demanding, unstuckstudy provides helpful study tools that make this course manageable. Just stay on top of the work and you'll get a lot out of this interesting class.
This professor is clearly not motivated by a love for history or a desire to connect with students on a basic level. This class has been such a disappointment in terms of content (extremely dense, boring, delivered poorly), professor's attitude (general uninterested, annoyed demeanor), and quality of instruction (reads off of slides, adds nothing)
Nice guy but he is disorganized and, despite his clear intelligence, constantly has the disposition of someone who is making it all up on the spot. His rubrics are clear but he doesn't grade to them very closely and his feedback is nonspecific. Probably some people will have a fine/good time in his class, but I wasn't one of them.
I took this course in Spring 2025 and he was a good professor. Show up to class, participate, get a general overview of the textbook, and you're fine. I loved how we got to write a paper on something of interest related to Canadian History. When I saw the reviews before this course I was worried but honestly was quite easy with a tad of effort.
1 paper... with 10-12 sources... for a beginner level course... yeah no... DO NOT TAKE
Very unorganized, does not mark based on the rubric at all. Cancelled more classes than he attended
I actually have never cried as much in my life then when I'm in this class. He seems bored and uninterested. I literally have never hated a class more. DONT TAKE IT RUN AND SAVE YOURSELF!
If you have no other option but to take this class, please drop out. The highlight of my semester was when his car broke down, and classes were cancelled for the week. This man doesn't like to teach, and that reflects in his lectures. which are just him reading off a slide and are completely useless. I can't name a thing I learned in this course.
HIST 1373- He is a horrible professor. He has no regard for student time. He takes over a month to mark assignments that you need to have his feedback for to complete the next assignment. He assigns a research paper that has to be 10-12 pages then 4 days after you finish that he assigns a 10 page final to write. Absolutely horrible work load.
Took this class as a requirement; his online lectures were boring and could put one to sleep. However, there was only a quiz a week, so it is very manageable. Had to write a 12-page paper and a few days later had a 10-page written final. 60% of our grade was left until the last few weeks! Stephane doesn't seem to care about his students very much!
Horrible class, he does not know how to teach and just reads of his slides in a monotone voice. I took this class because it was the only history class the fit in my schedule and it is my biggest regret of my life. If you are required to take a history class do anything in your power to avoid this professor.
Avoid! Gives little feedback and instead lots of criticism with no elaboration with how to improve. You are expected to have the skills of a historian in a beginner level class with no prerequisites.
