He seems like a good person but it all stops there, his teaching skills are very poor, he gives extra credit for hw but if u are 2 minutes late to class he won't collect it.. his tests are really hard, and besides there is not enough time so is mostly luck....
He knows the material well, but his class is pretty hard. Average for first exam was a 56%, there is no curve. He gives extra credit, but most of us don't have a clue how to do them. This class is NOT easy! We all put hours into studying for this class, but it never seems to be enough!
I dont know where to start. 1.) cant understand him. he has a french accent. 2.) he doesnt really teach, he just comes in and practices organic chemistry on the board. 3.)Claims he teaches from the book but that is NOT TRUE. 4.)His homework is 100x harder then the problems in the book. He seems like a nice person but a terrible professor.
He is nice, BUT: you can't understand a word he says, his handwriting is horrible... and most assignments are handwritten. He does give random extra credit for attending class, also quizzes for EC, but no time to take them. Tests are OKAY, but with bad averages. If you can avoid taking him for Organic Chem, do it.
orgo is hard period and prof trys to cover all material he can. lots of new material so tests are hard but lots of extra credit - saved me!
Roche is very nice, very helpful in office hours. Not the most organized, still possible to get by (and get an A). The trick is to read the material before class and then he is easier to follow. The accent thing is a lame excuse, it's not really that bad. Organic is a very hard class in general. You just have to spend a lot of your time on it.
Great Professor, Learned a lot from him. Made a hard course easy. Had to study a lot but ended with an A. Offered help in during his office hours. Really understands the material, there wasn't a question he couldn't answer.
Well I've never cheated as a student until I took this class. I re-took the class with Rezler and I swear to Jesus himself we only learned 1% of what Rezler teaches. I never underestimated Organic Chemistry and had my nose in the books at least 10 hours a week minimum! I recommend taking Rezler, she is an angel compared to this chemistry demon.
Class was difficult but very challenging. There were a few presentations which helped me learn to really understand how to read a journal article. I learned an invaluable amount about stereoelectronics because he was extremely patient, and always willing to help me. He's a great P.I. too :)
I liked Dr. Roche. Charming accent, however Carbon sounds like Car bomb, and any French/English cognate words will be spoken as normally in French. You're expected to learn the text material before attending lecture. The exams will trip you up if you overlooked certain rules/properties while studying. Take EVERY extra credit opportunity seriously!
He can be hard to understand with his accents, but not too bad...The worst thing about his class is that he'll skim over things and make you feel like it's not that important and then, bam! There's several questions on it on the exam. His exams can be a bit hard, you're given 70 mins for a 45 question exam. He doesn't curve, but gives extra credit.
Dr. Roche is a very passionate professor. He knows what he's talking about which may lose you along the way. Which is why I suggest to follow along in the text. But also go to class because it will really help on tests. Study the Hw and quizzes and stay for test reviews, he re uses questions. Try to answer the E.C questions and do well on the Hw!
BEWARE, professor is very hard to understand and it doesn't help the fact that he doesn't allow you to record the class, on top of not being able to finish writing down what on the board before he changes the slide. he does give extra credit, you are going to need to read a lot. only SI can teach. READ THE BOOK, ONLY WAY TO PASS.
This is a VERY hard class. If you don't put multiple hours a week of studying, you will likely fail. This class is no joke. His accent is hard to understand at times and his handwriting is not the best. The only thing that saved me was the EC. Do it ALL. Attendance is not mandatory but quizzes/HW are randomly graded. Tests=bulk of grade. Good luck!
Do not go into the class completely discouraged. Those that did not like Dr. Roche did not like to work or put time into studying. Lots of extra credit. This professor is incredibly intelligent. Good prep for MCAT
BEWARE! Roche is not a horrible professor but be aware that you have to do more studying outside the classroom. He does not go by the book (he uses one of his own), his accent sometimes gets in the way of understanding, must put in effort on your own. It is a hard class and he does not make it easier. BEWARE! Extra credit is all participation.
Horrible you can't understand him, extra credit is impossible, and he is his tests are completely unfair even to those who read ahead of lecture...
Even with all the extra credit and 8-10 hours a week of studying with SI it's impossible to pass. STAY AWAY FROM ROCHE!
10 homeworks were given. He warns you that he won't grade each HW. He ends up grading only TWO HWs which were the most difficult and makes them 15 points each. I studied the problems in the book and the acs guide and still didn't do well in his class. Most of the students that take his class the 1st time fail and pass with him a 2nd time. Go figure
Honestly tired so hard and put hours upon hours every week... failed miserably. Did every opportunity to seek help from him and tutoring everything is just too much. I did well on every homework except 2 which were the ones he actually graded. I do not recommend him for Orgo 1 at all it was the most suffering I ever had in college.. he got harder.
Acts like he is on your side but you will quickly learn after add/drop that you were wrong. I tried so hard to improve and do well, so many hours of independent studying/reading and working closely with him. He said he would take care of me when I was doing bad and instead of failing I got an D-. Yep that is some care. I would not recommend at all.
The only way to succeed in his class is to read the book and do all of the book problems.
I noticed After the first test it is better to not try and copy what he writes on the screen, because its pointless. Once you try to study alone you confuse yourself more, nothing he writes makes any sense, because everything is all scribbled around the paper, and on top of that he rushes through important points, almost trying to make it harder!
Run the other way, take Rezler! He is impossible and his test are hard. Unless you plan on living and breathing orgo and failing your other classes don't take it.
Prof Roche is not adequate to teach this subject, and his office hours are for students who don't have a job, seem to only have his class and don't have anything else to do, because its the most random times, like Friday at 1:00pm. Usually students work on fridays! from 350 students, it went to around 70, stay away
This is one of the hardest courses at FAU and was a nightmare!! The professor does not have a grasp on how to teach. Read, Reread and REallyReRead! the chapter he will go over in class, otherwise the whole semester will be catchup. Also look at other sources, because he says he goes by the book but then the test questions are completely not.
I'm a Chemistry junkie. Straight A's throughout Chem. 1 and 2. I knew Orgo was going to be tough, but I figured it'd be fine. HUGE MISTAKE. Professor Roche is so self-concerned and apathetic about teaching that he literally tells you in the syllabus to do every question in the book to do well. Please, don't waste your time and money on Roche.
Hardest class ever taken don't come in with the Gen Chem mind set. I am most likely not going to pass need an A+ on the final to pass the class. Planning on retaking with Haces.
Even with 120 points of extra credit and countless studying I failed miserably.... Avoid at all costs
I actually thought Roche was a very good professor. He doesn't spoon-feed students like a lot of other professors at FAU do. He teaches assuming that the student read the book before class because that is what we are all supposed to do anyway. The tests are hard but theres a lot of extra credit. It is possible to get an A if you work for it.
Dr. Roche is an awesome professor! People who are complaining are still expecting that General Chemistry curve... this is orgo. You have to work for it and study hard to be successful. I made an A it wasen't impossible just required work. He offers 120 points of extra credit, which really help and is there to help you if you need it. Take him!!!!!!
Worked extremely hard for this class. I took the time to get tutoring, I did the extra credit, and even attempted to seek aid from Roche himself, but that just was not good enough. I implore fellow students to stay away from this teacher. Waiting to take the class with Rezler or another professor would be the ideal thing to do if you want to pass.
Dr. Roche is a good intelligent professor. The only issue students have with him is his pace when he lectures. He goes through every topic really really fast. His tests are very hard and challenging that's why he has so many extra credit opportunities. I ended up with a B after earning two 68% on the first two tests, final exam i earned a 242300.
I took Dr. Roche Fall of 2014 and anyone who failed was because they did not put enough time and effort for this class. I studied 4hrs a day and made many attempts to go to his office hours for help and was very helpful. His Friday review sessions were very helpful also especially for the second test. loves to put the same quiz questions on tests.
Honestly one of the worst teachers at FAU, his lectures are confusing, and he scrapes the surface compared to what he test on. Have to self teach and use many other resources just to get a decent grade, and thank god for the extra credit quizzes because he barely grades the homework.
Organic chemistry is not an easy subject. You cannot expect the professor or TA's to study for you. However, a good professor will help facilitate the information. You cannot rely on just the lectures to teach the information. 99.9% of the work must come from you. Yes his exams are tough! But he gives 120 pts extra credit AND curves the ACS final
Dr. Roche is extremely intelligent when it comes to chemistry. But, he goes very quickly in lectures and is very hard to follow. His tests are pretty challenging (Especially test 2). The ACS final was a little bit easier and he gave about 130 total points possible for extra credit. Orgo is not easy.. but you can pass if you put in the work.
Organic chemistry is a hard class, so don't expect an easy A, but this professor is fair and helpful. He's very approachable, teaches with clarity, and wants students to succeed. Tests aren't easy, but homework and quizzes (both extra credit) help prepare you.
Take at any other campus, any other professor, or any other school if it comes down to it for Orgo 1. Avoid this class at all costs. I am a chemistry major and love the subject passionately this class put out that fire.
Quizzes aren't grades they are extra credit but please try your hardest on the exams, they are tough... Very very tough. Be careful one mistake in the course and it could be the difference between do amazing, pass, fail, or do miserably.
My best recommendation- do not take this course in the summer term, too much content for a 12 week interval. Also, his exams are EXTREMELY difficult so be prepared (i.e. go to SI Sessions, get tutoring, and do ALL practice problems). If you require additional help, it's no use going to Dr. Roche for it. He will easily dismiss your question.
I entered this class terrified by the RMP scores. This classes ended up being easier than I though. Reading the book before class helped a lot to understand what he was covering. All his notes are written and drawn, showing mechanisms clearly. People complain of his accent but it's not bad. Tests, not bad. As long as you read thoroughly you'll pass
Honestly I enjoyed Orgo 1. Dr. Roche gives you everything you need to succeed he even takes time to hold review sessions every Friday for his students. His exams and homework are fair if you keep up with textbook. I got a 100 on exam 1/bonding, 88 on exam 2, and 63 on the final. With the 111 points of extra credit I made over a 100 in the class!!!!
Dr. Roche was an amazing instructor. I loved that he had us analyze a published chemistry paper, create an abstract, and present it to the class. I learned a lot from the experience and would do it all over again. It was a pleasure to have taken his class. I also ended up getting a 100 in the class.
Orgo 1 is hard regardless of who it's with. With Roche and all prof. You have to be independent in doing all the book problems and homework for sapling and lecture. GO TO CLASS although it's relatively useless he gives extra credit to people who answers his lecture questions and gives EC pop quizzes that help a lot. Loved him made a solid A with EC
Dr. Roche is the best organic professor you can ask for. Over 120 point of extra credit available to you and constant assignments/study aides given to you to do well. He even takes time every Friday to do review sessions for students ON HIS OWN TIME. S Average a B or C on the 3 exams then obtain the EC A. I wish he taught Orgo 2! Great MCAT prep!
2nd time taking him the second being Fall, 14.. He got way more organized, structured, and helpful from the first time I took him. He understands now how to run the course and gives abundant extra credit enough to bring you up 2 letter grades if earn it all. The extra credit comes from lecture, pop quizzes, and 2/10 graded lect. homework. Great guy
Loved him! Not an easy "A" but do-able and great prep for Orgo standardized exams. Be sure not to slack and to take the class seriously and a B or C is more than possible with all the extra credit. First exam is the easiest BY FAR! So study hard and make sure to milk all the points from that test cause Exam 2 and the final are pretty brutally hard!
Pop quizzes so always have a extra blue scantron and do all lecture HW for accuracy he grades 2 random for extra credit. Awesome guy, awesome class, and generally made Orgo better than it could have been with other prof. Put in the work and do EC A or B! Would take him again for Orgo 2 if he taught it! Use his extra review sessions before exams..
Dr. Roche is an amazing orgo professor! He is the best at FAU hands down. It's so easy to learn from someone who loves their work so much! Tests are based on lecture, homework problems, and basic concepts. He is super helpful in office hours! Great Professor, trust me. Put in work and you will have an A no problem. Plus he is very handsome as well!
Terrible. Would not take again. Class is very unorganized.
Study Study Study. Don't get intimidated. This class is very easy to pass. I got a 72, 42 and 62 on the 3 tests and passed with a 78. They offer 150pts of extra credit from quizzes in class which come straight from his optional HW he gives out each week. You also will earn 180-200pts from online orgobond which is the equivalent of an A test score.
If you are planning to take Orgo 1 be prepared to study your behind off no matter who you take it with. Organic Chemistry is not a class you learn by staring at a powerpoint but by doing problems. Dr. Roche does all of his examples written out by hand. He is very easy to approach and is very helpful during his office hours. Can pass if studied hard
Anyone expecting to succeed in Organic Chemistry without putting in major leg work is confused. Professor Roche did a good job of displaying what we were expected to learn, he made it very clear that it would not be easy and said he expected most of the class to fail but it's a weed out class. I worked hard for a C+, and it was my first time.
Dr. Roche is a good professor especially when comparing him to the other chemistry teachers at FAU. He can be rude sometimes (unintentionally perhaps) but it can be annoying. 2 exams and a final. Gives HW and quizzes every week. When studying for all 3 exams, STUDY FROM THE HW AND QUIZZES. A lot of questions on the exams will come straight from thr
He is a disaster. Do not take him you will most likely end up dropping the class.
Super unorganized. Terrible professor. If he is the only person teaching whatever class you need, consider changing majors.
exams are cumulative, 3 exams &1 final. gives HW for practice but the HW doesnt reflect the exams. Quizzes do not reflect the exams either. passing rate in my class is pretty low. one of the test avg was 60-50s. very unorganized. he does trick questions on exams. often made mistakes on exams so a lot of curving grades. SI leader Dervin is good
No matter what professor you take for this course, you are expected to teach yourself BUT the school provides help options such as SI sessions, oc2 hours, which are provided during the weekend, and orgobonding. Roches accent doesn't get in the way! Do all the homework he assigns, exams are challenging but if you study you will definitely pass
Roche was a great professor! It was a very challenging class.. I received an A in his class by doing these things. Sit in front and answer questions for extra cdt. complete hours to take quizzes, read every chapter and did every problem. Used supplemental practice such as study zone packets. i used clutch prep and study acs study guide for final.
Be prepared to teach yourself everything and/or rely on outside sources like SI sessions or tutoring
Great Professor! Out of every single person teaching Orgo 1, he is by far the EASIEST.
I didn't learn anything from him. I highly suggest you read organic chemistry for dummies because I learned everything I know from that book.
Although organic chemistry can be difficult Professor Roche is a very fair professor. I did not find it necessary to go to his lectures and if you read and do all the extra credit for the course you are destined to do well in the class. He offers a lot of help if you go to his office hours.
Organic Chemistry no matter who you take it with will be a challenging class. I took it with Professor Roche two times. The first time I got a C- and second time a B+. He offers a lot of extra credit and his exams are fair. If you do many of hw problems you are destined to pass. Where I mess up is with the ACS final. Def know that book well!
Nothing to say other than what a horrible professor. I cannot believe he still has a job. He is very unorganized and expects you to understand what he cannot teach. He is very rude and condescending. Save yourself aggravation and avoid this professor even if you have to take a class at another institution and transfer over the credits.
This guy is the one of the worst Professors I've ever had (I'm about to graduate). There are no PP slides to look at and gives no outside resources to help you along the way. He freestyles his lectures and they're hard to follow. Don't bother attending class. Just go to SI and do practice problems, I wouldn't have had a chance to pass without them
This professor is not a bad guy but his teaching is messy. He doesn't teach in any particular order and teaches only what he remembers on the spot. My biggest annoyance with him is that he adds a few questions on the exam with content we never learned, so you end up missing them. The only bright side is that he gives a lot of extra credit.
This professor is hilarious and chill. He gives a lot of extra credit, so there is no excuse to not get a decent grade in his class. He reviews material in class, so you have to read before class, but that is the life of the uni student anyway. He gives a lot of resources to study. All his exams are based on homework problems discussed in class.
Roche really cares about helping students understand orgo, lectures can get content-heavy but he'll stop to explain further if necessary. Exams are not curved, but there's a ton of extra credit. Go to the homework sessions every week; everyone is given a chance throughout the semester to present a problem for up to 20 EC points.
Dr. Roche was a decent professor. The great thing about him is that he gives a lot of extra credit opportunity, so take advantage of it. Highly recommend attending his homework/exam review because he tends to put them on the exam or put very similar questions. Overall, just practice & you should be good.
Regardless of who you take, CHM 2211 will be very challenging. He gives out a lot of extra credit by using quizzes and group activities, however his graded material such as homework and exams are quite difficult. For me, using the book was a lot better compared to his confusing and short lectures, but he is a good professor and I highly recommend.
Gives a lot of extra credit for an equally difficult course, so it evens out the lower exam grades. I did well in the class without even attending lectures. I think I stopped attending the first week because they were not helpful to me at all. Get ready to teach yourself and as long as you commit you're fine. Forget about him responding to emails.
Orgo 2 is a challenging course no matter what. His exams were very fair. He would give an extra credit quiz before each exam. 20 points for presenting hw in class. Most of his exams were copied and paste from the review. Study daily for this course , attend SI ,hire a tutor if you still don't understand. All of this combined should get you the A
He explained everything clearly
Very good professor, broke down the information in a very digestible way. He was accommodating and his study guides clearly showed the types of problems you should be able to do. Orgo 2 is a tough subject but Roche was one of the best teachers I have had in the science department.
Exam and lecture structures are terrible. Opt for the other professor for better teaching. Exams feel copied, questions not covered. Graded homework delayed, lectures rushed. Class allegedly made harder due to many students skipping the lecture, arbitrarily difficult.
Horrible truly horrible. Bad at lecturing. Does not follow the textbook material. Questions on Orgo 1 material that St. Germain never taught (maybe Roche should teach Orgo 1 if he wants to ask questions on it....). These exams were some of the worst chemistry exams I've ever taken at FAU. His study guides DO NOT HELP. TAKE WEST TO ACTUALLY LEARN.
I am not sure why Dr. Roche is receiving so much disrespect. His teaching style is similar to St. Germain, but he does want you to do well. He is funny and humorous in class. The exams represent similar questions as shown in his homework and exam reviews. If you go to SI and tutoring, you can definitely pass this class. You have to put in effort!
Graded only on exams & quizzes. U must present 1 homework for a grade. Exams are exactly like homework & quizzes study those. He doesn't record lectures so u must attend class. It's hard to understand him, lots of learning on ur own but if u study and do all homework and quiz questions it's easy. Don't rely on SI dont even waste ur time with SI.
Thick french accent, moves fast, no zoom recordings which I believe are a must for difficult classes like orgo. Hes not the worst but also not the best. If you put effort and a lot of study hours into the class, you will do fine. No exam curves, and only three extra credit quizzes.
Dr. Roche is not the worst professor. I heavily relied on tutoring, SI, and attending his lectures. He provides you with exam reviews prior to the exams and gives you 4 extra credit quizzes which is 45 extra credit points overall! SI with Cristian and tutoring with Shannon were key to understanding Orgo and passing. You have to put in the effort!
All exams r exactly like hw problems and practice exams! Super sweet professor! hard to read his notes but a class like orgo u just got to teach urself using youtube and SI. He does make present a homework problem for a grade which u get points off for not doing right which was the only thing that sucked.
