At the time of this review we are 1 month through the semester. So far we have had only 2 tests that are related to readings in one of our textbooks. This test is an open-book test. We had take home exam due and it was relatively easy. It was only 4 questions but she expected at least half a page for each answer. Just go to class and take notes.
Professor Amerian is super cool and is a serious history nut! If you enjoy history, social issues, and politics, you will have fun attending and participating in her lectures. She doesn't assign unreasonable amounts of reading, and her quizzes and writing assignments are clearly tied into the readings. I definitely recommend taking this class!
I have always hated history. It's extremely boring to me. Professor Amerian made it relatively interesting. I like her a lot. She's nice and was quite willing to help me outside of the classroom. She gave out study guides prior to exams to help ensure we would do well. She allowed us to bring notes into the exams! Overall, a great professor.
The best history teacher you will ever have. Take her class, you wont regret it.
Dr. Amerian is the best! Do yourself a favor and take her!
Super helpful and genuine. Put in effort, study, and the class should be a breeze. She explains material so clearly and is extremely helpful.
Probably the best History teacher you will ever have. Professor Amerian is smart, kind, entertaining, lenient, but first and foremost she is a professor and you need to respect that.
She's cool and all but her "death by Powerpoint" lectures are unimaginative, and her tests don't relate to the material she teaches but more on the themes that she presents such as African Americans and equality. Speaking of tests, expect A LOT of writing (3 page essays and short answers). Lastly, the 7 page paper I had to write for her was stupid
Prof Amerian makes history interesting. Don't worry about memorizing useless dates, the class relies more on the big picture and the underlying "theme." She makes sure you are using your brain and her tests are critical thinking ESSAYS. She's lenient with late assignments and gives extra credit. Super helpful.
Ok, I took two history class when I had her. my other history class is an actual history class. Her class is not even a history class, its a freaking English class.. She doesn't care much of what you know. It's all about how you write. You can give her all the facts etc. If you do not write well, you're done.
Help is there for you if you need it. All these people here complaining that she is too tough - no. I barely opened the books but I went to class and listened. Didn't even take notes. She is slightly tough at grading but if you are doing decently and do the extra credit you're all set.
At the beginning I was a bit sceptical about get class. But as tine progressed this professor has inspired me to look into a possible history major. Great teacher.
I used to hate anything related to History or Geography because I never had a professor that made it interesting to me. Prof American is awesome! The book she makes you read (READ IT!!!) is very interesting and she goes over the chapters (briefly) in class to add some details. She is a tough grader but she is super sweet you HAVE to take her!!
Amerian is really cool and patient with every student. History is not my thing but her lectures are interesting for the most part and she tries to make it fun. Midterms and final were essays, and we only had a few quizzes. She offers a lot of extra credit opportunities as well. Interesting class and easy to pass if you work a little bit.
She is AMAZING! Great lectures, keeps things interesting. Will take her again.
Dr. Amerian is a real history buff. She knows her stuff. Participation is a must if you want to receive at least a C in the class. She's AMAZING. She's kind, sweet, and willing to help outside the classroom. She is a tough grader when it comes to the papers but that's because she's willing to revise it before its due.
she helps you out if she sees that you're struggling in class. gives out extra 30 max some of the extra credit consists of field trips and participation will help out alot . gives out 4-6 quizzes(they are online to study) 2 inclass essay midterm and final and 1-3 essay submitted via ecompanion . quizzes are 10 multiple choice and tests just essay
Dr. Amerian is a really great history professor. She is really smart, funny, kind, and always willing to help. She is an amazing professor. Would definitely recommend her. 10 multiple choice quizzes (10 questions each), 2 in class essay exams, 2 take home essays.
Dr. Amerian was one of the best professors I had at SMC. Her enthusiasm for American history was inspiring and her lectures were very fascinating, definitely hard to not pay attention in her class. If you don't like to read a lot and write papers, this is definitely not the class for you though.
I love professor Amerian. She's passionate about Women's History. I usually hate history, but she's made me care about it. She uses power points that make things more interesting, and she shows us paintings or other things from the era we're learning about it. I mean, somehow this lady has made me care about history. Amazing.
I am going to repeat what another student said " Her class is not even a history class, its a freaking English class.. She doesn't care much of what you know. It's all about how you write. You can give her all the facts etc. If you do not write well, you're done."
the hardest class i ever had in the college wants essays for mid term and final very very VERY tough grader VEERRYY TOUGH GRADER
Be sure to take notes of the things she talks about in class, crucial to tests and it helps to be aware so you are prepared for tests. Any lectures/hw will support you for tests/quizzes. She makes the lectures interesting & if you participate, you're gaining a lot from the class. Ignore the bad reviews, its just lazy people who can't write/study...
She's an amazing professor. Can be challenging but prepares students to transfer and succeed. Not for lazy students or slackers. Attendance is mandatory but she's interesting and cute so it's not that bad.
This is a easy class to pass but she makes it difficult to get a grade higher than a C. She treats the class like a English class. Very very very very tough grader. I would not recommend anyone taking her. You'll just frustrate yourself. It's not about what u know. Too her it's about how you write. I think she forgot she is a history prof. Trust me
She's an amazing and inspirational professor. Can be challenging but prepares students to transfer and succeed. Not for lazy students or slackers. Attendance is mandatory but she's interesting and cute so it's not that bad.
Took Professor Amerian for History 52. Really engaging and have many opportunities to get extra credit. Loved her so much I took History 11 with her!
Prof Amerian was awesome. She taught such a good class. She is very smart and passionate about her work and it showed in the class.
She's gorgeous. I'm a sucker for intelligent women, and if not for the setting, I would have loved to grab a drink with her. I missed seven classes which I would definitely not recommend because attendance is important.
Great History professor, she is clear and you learn a lot. She has great slide shows and know what she is saying. Very interactive. I recommend it for those who know learning means a bit of hard work. By no means is the hard work impossible, it's simple but you must do it is all.
Her lectures were amazing. I really learned a lot from them. she set a goal to make history fun and succeeded. I recommend you take her if you want to learn about the past.
Doctor Amerian is the best of the best. Her lectures are amazing. She is so inspirational. One paper, 3 quizzes, 2 mid terms, and group project. I recommend her. You are going to love her.
As a person Professor Amerian is genuine and amazing, but her class is extremely hard especially if you do not enjoy history. The only information given on topics is through powerpoints she presents in class that do not have all the needed information on them & the rest are docs u need to read yourself bc she barely goes over them. Very hard class.
bad teacher
Dr. Amerian is a definitively rewarding educator. She is engaged with her material, and an inspirational lecturer. This professor will invest time and effort in helping students succeed. She teaches necessary skills, relevant themes, empathy, & prepares you for transfer. Best professor I've ever had. Bonus: Approachable, cares about her students.
She's too obsessed with history. She thinks that this class is the only class you're taking. And she has favorites. I got a good grade but I don't reccomand taking her class unless you want a headache. There are better history teachers
Not extremely difficult but you have to work for it. She is a great professor will def take her again. Very smart and passionate. Cute too
My favorite professor. She gets right to the point, and makes sure everyone in her class understands what is being taught.
She grades according to her syllabus, so there are no surprises whatsoever. Lots of opportunity for extra credit. She's super nice and engaging.
lots of assignments but very caring teacher, wants students to succeed
Dr. Amerian is great! She really changed my perspective on history. I love how she is so passionate about her profession. You will learn a lot in this class. If you don't like to read then I suggest you don't take this class or you will not pass the reading quizzes or get a good grade on your essays or any of the tests.
Absolutely loved taking this class! She really inspires you and makes you genuinely interested in the subject. You do have to put in the work, there's a lot of reading, a few quizzes, two written midterms, and a final paper, but it's worthwhile in order to really understand what you're learning. Great lectures and amazing discussions.
Don't take her.
Professor Amerian genuinely cares about her students and listens to their questions and concerns with total sincerity. She is a talented lecturer who inspires a deeper passion and appreciation for history. For the midterm/final essays, she provided the prompt several days before, so students who were willing to prepare could definitely succeed.
Took the scholars section. She is extremely knowledgeable but down to earth prof. She created an interest in the subject I didn't know I had and appreciate so much now. You will read the entire textbook, so be ready for that and to write in-class essays for your midterm and final. Not an easy class, but you will learn a lot!
ok I was really mad that I got a B bc I was like a percent away from an A but she's still a good prof. & an amazing lecturer Get ready to read!! the subject's interesting & important to know. Not an easy class but I liked it. make sure you go to tutoring & study a lot for tests. theres one paper 2-3 pgs, 3 quizzes, 2 midterms & a group project
Her class is easy, there are 3 quizzes, one midterm and a final.
She's a tough grader. Miss 2 questions on a reading quiz and you're already in B territory. She doesn't like to give out A's. The grading criteria is misleading/manipulative. There is a ton of "Extra Credit," and you will have to do it if you want an A. Also, there is a group project which typically rewards slackers and punishes good students.
She's definitely a tough grader and her reading quizzes can be quite challenging. All of her in-class exams are essay ones so be prepared to write a lot and prepare beforehand. Her lectures are alright and she provides a lot of insight/information. As long as you're relatively caught up w/ the reading and take notes in lecture you'll be alright.
Great structure for a History class, but her quizzes and tests are challenging. She gives: 3 online reading quizzes from the textbook, 1 writing exam, 1 map quiz, 2 midterms, and a group presentation as a final exam. She does give many extra-credit opportunities, which did help me personally a lot. Highly recommend this class.
Professor Amerian? *Italian Chef Kiss* Unfortunately lectures are presented in PowerPoint, but are well structured and engages students we excellent delivery. Patently mindful of her students, class is designed for success. Readings are far more than entertaining, they are mind blowing! Highly recommend.
This class may be one of my favorite classes I've taken on campus at SMC. Professor Amerian makes the class very straightforward. If you pay attention and participate in the lectures, you will understand the material, receive an education, and most likely an A. I liked how there was little to no work outside of the class.
Professor Amerian is an excellent professor. She encourages students to be strong critical thinkers through daily discussions. She is willing to help any student who wants to learn and do well in the class. Be aware of her reading quizzes though. They require a thorough reading of the two textbooks for her class. I learned a lot from her.
Very funny and kind teacher! She'll crack jokes and has a very mellow, good vibe. She makes the class very welcoming for everyone. Tests can be difficult as she wants very specific information, but she usually warns you ahead of time what she's looking for. Lots of reading from text book, just stay on top of it or try to read ahead if possible.
Exam and essay heavy, but interesting lectures and plenty of extra credit. Chill prof in general and willing to help
I respect the hell out of Dr. Amerian. She's brilliant, understanding, kind, and her lectures are entertaining. I recommend you do the readings when they're assigned and take advantage of her office hours and all of the extra credit opportunities. You have to work for an A, but it's worth it.
Learned about history more than my whole life with that being said I enjoyed the class very much and the way the class progressed based on chapters of the textbook was great and easy to follow up.
Professor Amerian is caring and very inspiring. I enjoyed this class but stay on top of your work. once you fall behind it will be hard to catch up. all tests are writing. 2 midterms and one final paper and one presentation in the end.
Her lectures are the best; both engaging as well as informative. There are 3 online quizzes, which are pretty easy as long as you do the readings. One writing quiz at the beginning of the semester to get you ready for the midterm. 1 paper which is also easy as long as you've read the book. The midterm and final are both pretty loaded. AMAZING CLASS
I hate history was never good at it, but through the textbook and her lectures made it easy to understand. You do have to keep up with the reading beware her online quizzes, but of you go to her office hours for the written exams and paper she WILL help you. I enjoyed the class more than I thought I would and I am thankful for that. scholarsclass
The level of diff. for this prof. isn't as bad as it appears by reading RMP alone. Indeed, primary src's, like grd. dist. for H12 in past 5 sem's, confirm that the ppl who drop her class never exc'd 11% w/ exc of F'16 (schlrs sec. evn less so); most stdnts do well (A/B for past 3 sem. nevr < 64% on avg). Loved the class; can't say enough. TAKE IT!
Professor Amerian is great at her job. However, do not take this class if you are not confident in your writing. Your final grade is mostly based on 1 short answer writing quiz, 1 paper, and a short answer+long essay midterm and final. The class is nothing but lectures, with occasional group discussion . I liked this, but it's not for everyone.
Professor Amerian makes history really interesting, although very power point heavy. It is very test heavy, with mainly two midterms and a final group presentation, but there is multiple extra credit opportunities and reading quizzes. Go to her office hours and she will give you the clues you need to write your papers! Great professor for history!
Super nice, accommodating, and makes history fun! I genuinely loved going to class. The style is dependent on group discussion rather than just purely lecture. We had three online reading quizzes, one writing quiz, one article review (4-7 pgs), midterm, final, and multiple extra credit opportunities. Loved it and would take again!
Her class is rather difficult due to a lot of writing, but she does keep the class interesting and her lectures are very thorough and detailed. As long as you take notes and show up to class, the writing shouldn't be so hard. I wouldn't take her class again though, I feel there's other Profs who teach well w/o so much writing to do
READ THE TEXTBOOK!! and listen to her lectures, they're very interesting and informative. The book is pretty heavy material but she explains it to where she grabs the entire class' attention. If you do bad on her first quiz do not panic !! Your grade will rise as long as you read, pay attention, ask questions, and attend office hours.
You Must Show Up, READ Everything Thats Assigned On Time To Pass Her Class. Textbooks Are Required. Professor Amerian Is Passionate, Caring, and Clear In Her Lectures. Offers Fair Amount Of E.C. Lectures Follow Along Really Well With The Readings. Class Has 3 Reading Quizzes, 1 Midterm, 1 Paper, Extra Credit Trip, And A Final. Highly Recommend 100%
An amazing professor and made history not boring.
Professor Amerian gave passionate lectures and showed the relevance throughout history and modern times repeatedly. She makes sure youre prepared for midterms and papers simultaneously while not holding your hand. I am so happy I took this class and cannot recommend her enough. She offers many opportunities for extra credit and answers emails.
Professor Amerian sounds like she is great in person, however it fails to translate online. Very heavy on reading material from so many sources if you don't thoroughly read even the smallest of articles it WILL impact your quiz performance. Test questions ensure you read AND understood ALL of the material. Good if only 1 or 2 classes on schedule
Amazing Professor!! Must take for history. You will need to set time aside to read and there will be about three 3-5 page essays. Offers up to 40 points of extra credit most will be one page answers. Super clear lectures and only tested on what she covers in class. No surprises. Open dialogue environment in class, participation matters so speak up!
Incredibly considerate and it's very obvious she cares about her students. Amazing feedback and is extremely approachable. Always willing to help make things easier for students. History is my least favorite subject but she also managed to make it interesting. Up to 40 points extra credit.
Probably my most favorite professor during the semester. She is very considerate, she extended due dates for students who couldnt finish assignments on time, I was honestly surprised. She complimented me for my essays, such a good professor. Her extra credits boosts your grade by ALOT, idk how students dont take that opportunity.
Professor Amerian truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Be sure to ask questions and utilize office hours because she will provide lots of help. Additionally, there is a LOT of reading necessary to complete the essays so definitely do the assigned readings so you dont fall behind. Overall, Im happy I took this class.
First off, the books can be found online. I'm in the middle of the semester and I have loved her classes because they are clear and flexible. The professor is super chill, easy to talk to, and she never makes you feel dumb. There is no real study guide for stuff because it's all on the chapters she assigns. READ AND ANNOTATE TO SUCCEED with an A!!!
I took this class in spring 2021; she is an outstanding professor at SMC. AMERIAN DONNELL is an understandable professor that she cares about her student to pass her course. She always would put effort into helping students into her office hours and emails to make the assignment more understandable and easier. Just make sure to read the textbook.
She is extremely nice and helpful, always gives feedback. There is a lot of reading in her class.
Definitely get ready to read. She required a book and provided certain readings which were on the reading quizzes. I recommend doing the extra credit, it's really easy. There was only about 3-4 papers, good professor! Try your best on the quizzes because they definitely affect your grade.
LOVED this professor! She is understanding and wants her students to succeed. She sets clear expectations, and if you follow them, you will get an A. She gives many opportunities for extra credit. In my experience, only 5pts of EC raised my grade by 2%. I love her lectures which give a holistic view of history and focuses on minority groups.
Read the assigned reading because the quizzes depend on that! She gives good feedback, and is very accessible. My mistake was not reading the given material, so get ready to read. She only gave 3 papers, and make sure to follow the format. I'd recommend her class.
I probably wouldve gotten an A if I actually studied the text more lol. This is not the type of class where u can just get your answers off quizlet. Professor Amerian is really cool and understanding though. Take advantage of her office hours and extra credit! Lectures not mandatory but are helpful and interesting.
If I didn't need this course for credit I would drop because she is a tough grader!! Every module is dependent upon reading loads of things. The entire semester was reading, reading and more reading. Very tough grader even after doing all the extra credit work my grade was not appropiate. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Careless about students. Won't allow late submissions due to family emergencies. Uses scanned copies of books and articles which impossible to read and slow down the learning process. Strict and late on grading. Won't recommend the class.
Professor Amerian is a dream professor! She has very clear expectations, and goes out of her way to set very clear expectations. Listen to the lectures, read, and communicate with her, and you'll learn a lot and earn a very good grade. I wouldn't hesitate to take another class from her, and recommend her highly!
Prof. Amerian is the DREAM PROFESSOR. I'm currently enrolled in her online History 10 course, and it has been absolutely captivating. She has a way of making you feel invested in the course material, and provides thoughtful insight into some of the most important facets of American history. She's also really easy to contact, and super understanding
She is a good professor and I would take her again she is just super heavy on reading. If you truly study hard and read all the material she gives you then you'll get a passing grade me personally I've never been a history person but I did it with a b so that means you can do it. She also helps and gives amazing feedback and responds within a day.
I never really was into American history but she made it really interesting. Pay attention to lectures and read the assigned chapters. Lots of extra credit but graded on a few things. She is incredibly understanding and very accessible outside of class. 10/10 would recommend
I highly recommend Professor Amerian. She was very nice and understanding. I had her History 10 class in the spring semester and there were only 3 essays. Easiest class ever if you just do the little work that's required. The assignments were also interesting which made it that much easier to just do the work.
Great professor, I'm not a huge history person but I enjoyed her class. There are discussion boards, quizzes, and essays, but the assignments are well spaced out. For me, I felt that her essay grading was a little hard, but that might just be me. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities available.
Professor Amerian is very kind and respectful as long as you let her know what is going on. Will work with you through anything and wants you to succeed. Fun lectures and very educational. Anybody would be lucky to have someone like her as a professor.
Professor Amerian is a overall good professor. Pros: -Tons of Extra Credit -Understand students who can't make certain deadlines -Great Presenter Cons: -25 minutes late to every class -Slow Grader -Timed in class essays are hard
Professor Amerian is one of the best professors I ever had at SMC. She's very supportive and caring and she wants you to succeed. If you're ever going through something that prevent you from submitting your homework, talk with her and she will give you an extension. She also gives out extra credit as well. I totally recommend this class 10/10.
She was honestly a really great professor. She is super understanding about late work, or missed assignments if it was because of something personal. She even extended the date for the final for me because I was so stressed and wasn't going to have time to do it. Talk to her, she's super responsive and communicative. Loved her!
She has a 0% AI detection rule that in theory makes sense but in practice is faulty. Turnitin is 98% accurate (NOT 100%) and you do not have visibility to the portions of your writing deemed "AI generated". Otherwise, the class is HEAVY in reading & writing. I would have appreciated lectures over 10 articles to read a week.
I took professor Amerian's Winter 6 week session. There were 3 reading quizzes, a Discussion, an Essay, and Final Project. Even though there wasn't much assignments, there is ALOT of reading and lectures. She does provide quite much of extra credit which is helpful.
Prof. Amerian is great. She is super nice and accessible. The class is heavily based on the reading, but her lectures break it down much easier. Make sure you read the text and the primary sources because the essays, reading quizzes and midterm are all based on that.
There was a lot of reading and long lectures but I enjoyed listening to her because she really knows her stuff and is very clear. I almost had fun writing the essays and reading the (entire) textbook. The reading quizzes were a little challenging but I still got decent grades. Overall I appreciated the challenge and everything that I learned.
Never have I ever had to read so much for a class before- almost ridiculous to think about. She specifically mentioned how she assigns a lot of homework but that it's all necessary and with all due respect, I'd argue against that. Her quizzes are only passable if you memorize everything in the reading. Her lectures are a bore, 40+min/3 a week.
She gave very clear instructions before doing any exam or quiz! Show up to class because it will benefit you at the end of the semester! She's very understanding when something happens, please communicate with her! Also, testing is on the blue book, very scary & definitely do your reading and take notes so I would not suggest skipping the class
She was somewhat similar to my first English Professor, gave good feedback and was not biased in terms of her lectures. Very tough grader but it taught me a lot
